Cromer Café Owners ‘Go Sober October’ Success
When Sam Grout from the Old Rock Shop Bistro and Laurie Scott from Breakers Café, Cromer decided to ‘Go Sober’ to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, little did they realise the support they would receive from their customers, friends and families. To date the pair have raised over £2,000 for the charity and the total is still climbing.
Agreeing to sponsor each other was just the start of a month of abstinence, which for Laurie included refusing to eat his favourite Steak and Guinness Pie. Sam said no to alcohol free lager saying that he felt it would be letting the side down by drinking a substitute for the real thing instead he enjoyed the refreshing taste of tonic water.
Both Sam and Laurie agree that they do feel better for their alcohol free month. Although neither has lost any weight, they do say they feel more energetic, more focused and have enjoyed the experience. In fact Laurie has decided to carry on into November but has promised his partner Emma that he will celebrate her special birthday on 8 December with a glass or two of bubbly!
Sam too is looking forward to December and a few days off at Christmas relaxing at home with a glass of his favourite real ale after a busy December both at the Old Rock Shop Bistro and his increasingly popular Christmas Baking service.
By then he will have delivered all the mince pies, sausage rolls and speciality Christmas cakes and can afford to relax before looking forward to a busy new year.
Laurie is also looking forward to 2015, feeling confident that after a busy 2014, the corner has perhaps turned with the economy and even more people will visit Cromer next year.
But before then Breakers expects to be busy with Christmas shoppers and on New Years Day with the firework crowds who flock to Cromer for the Firework Display over Cromer Pier.
So will they do the challenge again? A resounding yes from both Sam and Laurie, saying that it has become a personal challenge and, while they would love to think that they will receive the same amount of support from sponsors, they understand that they can not keep asking the same people for support.
Both Laurie and Sam were overwhelmed by this year’s support and wish to thank all their sponsors for their generosity, saying Macmillan Cancer Support is an amazing charity and one that all to often touches us either personally or we get to know more about through friends and loved ones.
The final question posed to both men – ‘Has it changed your drinking habits?’ - bought an interesting reply!
Sam said ‘Yes he would try and maintain a sensible level of drinking’, making the point that you don’t always have to drink alcohol to enjoy yourself.
Laurie agreed with Sam adding ‘It is all to easy to end up drinking too much when out with friends but I have learnt that keeping the alcohol levels low does not diminish the fun – it’s much more about the people you are with, than the drinks you consume’.
Macmillan Cancer Support’s Sober October has to date raised over £3 Million with some 100,800 people taking part. Go Sober is just one of the many fundraising events organised by the charity to find out more visit www.macmillan.org.uk

Norwich Eating Disorder Charity Scoops ‘Team of the Year’ Award
Beat – the UK’s leading eating disorder charity and the only national charity based in Norwich – were proudly named ‘Team of the Year’ at last month’s Eastern Daily Press Stars of Norfolk Awards. Now in its 25th anniversary year, the charity supports people affected by eating disorders and their families, through a range of face-to-face, online and helpline support.
Eating disorders affect an estimated 1.6 million people in the UK alone. With a consistently strong media and online presence, Beat campaigns to improve understanding, access to treatment, and to change the way people think about eating disorders – most recently encouraging men with eating disorders to speak up and seek support with its “Beat The Silence” campaign.

Entry £5 by programme on the door. More details from David on 07785 782498
Carols for the RNLI
Come and join us at The Grove on 22 December.
The launch coincides with the revamping of the website. In previous years you could download a paper order form to take into the shop but now it’s a full Click & Collect experience. “I’m a modern butcher and thought it was about time we caught up with the modern shopping experience. People are short of time these days so what better way to get Christmas dinner sorted than to be able to go online and get everything you need, be it a Hamper or choosing from our Christmas range. What’s more, order a hamper and you might get it for free.” said Icarus. Everyone who orders a Christmas Hamper, either online or in store will be entered into a prize draw to win their Hamper for free. For further details visit www.icarushines.co.uk.
After a fabulous debut last winter (despite the hurricane conditions!) we are once again hosting an evening of carols in aid of Cromer RNLI on Monday 22 December from 6pm.
There will be the finest mince pies, mulled wine plus lots of other seasonal goodies from our family of wonderful local suppliers. And of course the chance to sing along with the great community that we have here in Cromer. We managed to raise over £300 last Christmas and it would be great to top that this year - so please do come along!

Traditional Norfolk Treacle Tart
jumper and donate for Ollie's fund, which goes to the great work that his doctors and nurses do for sick children in the midlands.
We are still very busy here at the Grove with our Christmas party season underway (though we still have a couple of slots available!) and full houses on Friday and Saturday nights.
This year we're delighted to be repeating our wonderful Christmas Carol Concert, with all proceeds to the fantiastic Cromer RNLI, on Monday 22nd December at 6pm. Last winter we raised over ÂŁ300 for the lifeboats despite hurricane conditions which led to the marquee taking a short flight at 3am, and coming to rest in a controlled crash against the lawn flowerbeds fifty meters away. Hopefully this year we are due some decent weather!
It's a fabulous night so please do come along. We are also raising money for Ollie, 9 year-old nephew to the Gravelings, who is suffering from a horrible cancer behind his knee and is very ill in Brimingham Children's Hospital. Come along on the weekend of 12th, 13th and 14th of December wearing your best Christmas
We have a great recipe for you this week! There's nothing better at Christmas than a properly traditional pudding that really warms you up, and our Norfolk treacle tart is proving extremely popular this winter. It's a firm favourite with all our diners (and our staff!) so please do pop in to sample it. Happy Christmas from all of us!
Traditional norfolk Treacle Tart For the short crust: 125g butter 125g lard 500g flour 100ml water
Cut the lard and butter into small cubes, add to flour in a big bowl and rub together until combined. Slowly add the water until thoroughly mixed and is a dough like consistency. Rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. Roll out pastry to ½ cm thick + line our tart case
For the tart: 4 slices of bread to be crumbled in a food processor 1 lemon, zest and juice 6 tablespoons of golden syrup
Heat ingredients in a saucepan until evenly mixed. Set aside to cool a little, poor into tart case you lined with pastry earlier. Bake for 25/30mins on 200/ gas 6 Table serve hot or cold with custard or ice cream.

Ollie and the Christmas Jumper
Mob: 07768 625736
We are very lucky that the Grove has always been not just a business, but a family home too.
This is Ollie, our cousin Jo's little boy. Ollie is nine and in July he was diagnosed with cancer behind his knee.
He started intensive treatment in the Birmingham Children's Hospital in September and has been possibly the bravest lad you could ever have the privilege to know.
So on 12, 13 and 14 December we are helping Ollie and his sister Kira raise money for the people that are helping Ollie battle this terrible disease.
All you have to do is come in for dinner or Sunday lunch wearing your very finest Christmas jumper - that's right, knitted reindeer and everything - and donate anything from ÂŁ1 upwards to Ollie's fund. Alternatively you can donate through JustGiving at www.justgiving.com/Kira-Swannell.

Friends of Cromer Museum
At our annual dinner members were able to look back on a year in which for the first time since it opened in 1978 Cromer Museum has had to close for four months over the winter as a result of cuts to its budget from the District Council. On a more optimistic note we heard from Victoria Manthorpe on the work of the Norwich Society which has just celebrated its 90th birthday. There are a number of links between Cromer and the work of the Norwich Society, most notably the work of the architect George Skipper and the artist John Moray-Smith. Skipper, as many of you will know, designed many of Cromer’s most well known buildings and Moray-Smith designed the murals that are so popular with visitors to Cromer Museum.
The aims of the Norwich Society are to stimulate public interest in and care for the history and character of Norwich, to encourage the preservation and improvement of features of historic interest and to hold meetings, lectures etc to further these aims. In many respects it mirrors the work done by the Cromer Preservation Society nearer to home.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
I am happy to report that Leo came through his operation and when I saw him that evening he was full of life and raring to go. This lovely little kitten has been reserved and will be going to his new home as soon as he is given a clean bill of health and had his first vaccination. Great news also on Abi and Edd, two of the other kittens mentioned last time, as they will have left for their new home when you read this. Little Edd in particular stole our hearts as he is such a loving kitten and full of character. Sadly, not all good news though as Itzy, one of the little kittens caught in September, had to be put sleep on our vet’s recommendation as he had a serious health problem. Despite the number of kittens in care we are still sad to lose even one.
The lady we thought might be able to offer our old cat Aggie a home was not able to do so. As Aggie may have renal problems we are monitoring her health at the moment to check how serious this is. With the right medication and lots of loving care this should not be a problem for this old cat and she is now safe and well with a nice bed to sleep on.
Lepto4 Vaccination
Cats with renal problems can survive for years, as I know from personal experience.
Although recent articles have mostly been about the numbers of kittens we have had this year (and yes, they still continue to arrive, with another 10 in care since the last article), we have recently re-homed several of the older cats who had been with us some time. Cats like Leo 8 year old Fernie who came in because he was stressed living in a multi cat household, Billie and Betsie (both 6 years old) who had been abandoned in a block of flats, and Sir Andrew (12 years) and Michael (5 years) also abandoned, but this time because their owners now had a dog.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/ northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
January 2015 we will be starting a new programme to include the new Lepto4 vaccination. Previous vaccines were only able to protect dogs against two known strains of the disease but new strains of the infection, not covered by conventional vaccines, are now being seen. The new vaccine will protect dogs against four strains of Leptospirosis giving a much broader defence against the rise if this potentially fatal disease.
In
Whether your dog is
Small
or
Big
The vaccine will be given to ALL dogs seen for vaccination from 2nd January 2015, this will require an initial course of 2 vaccinations so if your dog is only in for its routine booster you will need to come back in 4 weeks for another injection. This second injection will be FREE OF CHARGE and is essential to maintain cover for your dog. The timing of this second vaccine is important so please make sure you attend both the appointments given to you. Puppies will automatically be started on the new vaccine and will also require a course of 2 vaccinations 4 weeks apart followed by annual booster vaccinations thereafter.

Still missing
Hello, I'm Spike. I have got myself lost and really want to go home. I live in Bernard Road but may have wandered out of Cromer, I just don’t know. I'm really missing my family and even my mother, Pixie who I love dearly, even though she drives me mad sometimes. Please help me find my way home. If you see me, please call my other mum, Lisa on 07586 351581. Lyn, Pam L, Andrea and Pam C would like to say a BIG THAnK YOu To all the members and the families of About With Friends who have made our jobs worthwhile. To the members of our lunch clubs who have supported us over the last 4½ years in EVERYTHING we have done. To the local businesses we have had the pleasure of working with and serving. To our wonderful volunteers who have given so generously of their time. The pleasure has all been ours, but the time has come for us to move on from AWF and with some sadness we say goodbye for now and wish you all the very best in the future.

Parking in North Norfolk District Council’s car parks will be free over the weekend before Christmas, 20 and 21 December.
The Council has decided to once again waive pre-Christmas parking charges. This year, following requests from town councils, parking will be free over the weekend of 20 and 21 December, to help persuade local people to buy their Christmas gifts and supplies locally, to support North Norfolk’s traders at this crucial time of year, and as a gesture of goodwill for the festive season.
Over the weekend of 20 and 21 December shoppers will be able to stay throughout the day without a ticket in any District Council–run car park, saving them up to £1.20 an hour.
Councillor Rhodri Oliver, NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Assets, said “One of North Norfolk District Council’s key aims is to support local businesses and, with Christmas being a critical time for traders, we want to encourage people to use the wealth of shops on their doorsteps. I hope that by investing in some free car parking over the weekend before Christmas we will encourage people to keep their shopping local.

Dear Margaret,
Cabbell Park and Planners
I am concerned about the planners and local District Councillors and their role in the Cabbell Park saga.
The Cabbell Park ‘takeover’ did not happen without a degree of work behind the scenes years before the ‘local plan’ emerged and the NNDC started its formal ‘takeover’. This ‘local plan’ would have started life in the Planning Office. It would have involved officers creating a first draft which would create considerable work. Councillors would have then been consulted or even have had some input into the first and subsequent drafts.
After adjustments the plan would have been presented to the Council for approval/amendment.

The plan would then be open for public inspection and also would have been presented to the Town Council for comment.
The plan would then have been sent to the Government for approval.
This process would have taken years during which time neither the Trustees not the Football Club were advised that this proposal was being considered. The Trustees did not take the opportunity to view the plan when available. They just did not think that the Council would consider changing the status of Cabbell Park and if so they would be consulted. Who would have seen the plans in time to make an objection? Those who you would imagine might have considered it to be in the interest of the town were the local District Councillors. They kept quiet even though two had close contact with the Football Club.
One piece of interesting comment in the plan was that the Club’s lease ran out in 2012. Very few people knew this even though it was no secret. It was not the sort of information that was readily obtained. Where did they get that information from? Yours sincerely, R F Richards

North Norfolk is a great place to live and it is not surprising that many people choose to retire here. Its relative remoteness is part of its charm, but also has occasional drawbacks, particularly if friends and family are far away at times when you need extra help.
At Hayes + Storr we have a large Private Client department, covering all aspects of ‘private client’ law, including wills and probate, powers of attorney and Court of Protection applications, tax, trusts and claims against estates. We encourage all our clients to have a valid will in place, as well as Lasting Powers of Attorney to deal with the possibility that you may not be able to deal with your own affairs in the future. As people get older, it becomes increasingly important to make sure that all their legal affairs are up to date.
However, we know that in many cases, older people have other practical concerns which also need to be addressed. An important part of our Private Client department is our ‘Elderly Client’ team, consisting not only of specialists in the law, but also a pastoral visitor and care assessor, a benefits adviser, and a number of administrative assistants. As well as legal advice we can assist you in many other ways, so if you have no friends or family in the area with the time or ability to help, our aim is to ‘fill the gap’ for you.
For example, you might need us to:
• find a carer, cleaner, gardener or handyman for you
• find someone to take you shopping
• help you to manage your bank accounts and bills
• arrange for your pets to be looked after if you need to go into hospital
If you require advice on this matter please contact our Private Client Team here at Hayes + Storr on 01692 503081. If you require advice on any other legal matter please telephone our office or email law@hayes-storr.com.
• advise you on your entitlement to care and benefits
• help you find suitable residential care and assist with the practicalities of moving.
Where appropriate we will also refer you to other organisations who can give you help and support.

Cromer Pier Show - Christmas 2014 The Cromer Pier Christmas Show is back for its 10th season and I am happy that it is back to its traditional best with enough glitter and sparkle to please everyone. .
This show is a fast moving and entertaining show, with one of Norfolk’s favourite sons, Olly Day, keeping everything moving with his patter and comedy.
This year’s the cast is joined by Lyn Paul, the singer and actress who found fame with The New Seekers (I’d like to teach the world to sing) and on stage with Blood Brothers. She is joined by Eddie Bushell, another local lad and they both sing a good mixture of songs from ballads to pop and Lyn sings her fabulous hit songs, very entertaining. Benson astounds us with his “How did he do that?” magic and comedy routines in his own inimitable style.
As usual the shows dancers were magnificent, choreographed by Di Cooke, providing inspirational routines, including a ballet (Swan Lake and Dance of the Cygnets with a guest dancer) as well as a Rag Doll and Scottish Dancing routines. The usual high octane show numbers supported by Marlene’s School of Dance youngsters in the finale to the first half as well as featuring The Cromer Youth Choir.
Olly Day

The whole show was kept moving by Musical Director Nigel Hogg, supported by Ian Westbrook (scenery), Laura Whyte (costumes) and Amanda Hill (Lighting).
I hope this brilliant show is able to complete its season this year, storms and tidal surges permitting. This show runs from Saturday November 29th to Saturday December 27th.
Come and support this brilliant cast and show. COnTACT CROMER PIER BOX OFFICE FOR YOuR TICKETS .TEL:01263 512495
CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY
November is the month when we hold our AGM and this year there was a good turnout for what proved to be a very interesting meeting. Feedback from members on the meetings, visits and shows we have organised was extremely positive. They were particularly pleased that the competition we organise for local schools seems to have become a regular feature in our programme. The committee was re-elected to hold the fort for another year.
After the AGM we had a talk on the work of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust from Caroline Spinks, one of its volunteers. She outlined the work of the NWT and the part it plays in developing and preserving the different habitats that are so special to Norfolk. The trust has over 30 reserves. The coastal reserves such as the one at Cley-next-the Sea are well known to the tens of thousands that visit this North Norfolk gem each year but less well known but equally important is the work done by the trust to protect heathlands such as those at Roydon Common and Buxton Common, the Brecks of south Norfolk and the many acres of woodland under its control. The trust is trying to encourage people to appreciate the role that their gardens play in helping wildlife. If managed in the right way these can act as corridors for frogs, toads, newts and hedgehogs to go about their business in greater safety and the planting of suitable trees and plants to encourage insects, butterflies and birds can have a great impact on creating the diversity of wildlife we all wish to see.
Our December meeting is a social evening for members and friends but we will be starting our 2015 programme of meetings on the second Wednesday in January when we will be learning ‘How to Make Tea’. Sounds interesting! 18

‘Merry Christmas’ demonstrated by Crystal Dyball was the theme in November.
Crystal showed us alternative designs as well as traditional, with fabulous flowers including stunning roses , which everybody present hoped to win in the raffle!
She also judged our competition entitled ‘A Christmas Carol’ - Lynne Tester was best in show. We had also decorated chocolate boxes for Halsey House.
Our next event is a workshop and sale with wreaths, table decorations and potted bulbs on Friday 12 December 9am – 12pm at Cromer Community Hall – coffee and mincepies available, all welcome.

Festive Jazz
The success of Jazz at The Goat Inn, located in the Hamlet of Skeyton, has surpassed all expectations. It started as a “one off” event to celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee in 2012 and has developed into one of Norfolk’s most popular traditional jazz venues with the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band playing on the first Sunday of every month. The festive season will be no exception with events on 7 December and 4 January from 1.30pm. There is no charge for admission and you can just “drop in” for a drink or eat in the restaurant or garden room, where the band plays .If you would like a table for lunch, however, it will be essential to book. Tel: 01692 538600.
The dates will be an opportunity for Liz Underdown (bass) to “get her feet under the table”. Liz is no stranger to the audience at
impressive pianist and trumpeter and is even known to have an occasional burst on the ukulele.
We are also pleased to let you know that Jazz at The Hub (the bar at Sheringham Little Theatre) has been well received and continues on Sunday 14 December when the Tom Harris Trio will be making the audience feel at home playing new takes on old favourites and some less well-known material.

CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS - REVIEW
MANUS NOBLE - GUITAR
The choice of artist and the content of his programme was so very appropriate for this autumn afternoon at Templewood - the grounds were so colourful, the landscape being a kaleidoscope effect of fallen leaves bringing a host of colours as one approached Templewood. Once inside, the setting of the music room and the colours of the music performed matched the beauty of nature itself.
Chopins Waltz Op 69 in B Minor - transcribed for guitar where the retuning involved the E string being augmented to F sharp and the A string to B, brought a successful performance to this work.
Berceuse - a cradle song - written to portray a day in November which
Tom developed his musical prowess at school. He graduated from the Norwich Student Jazz Orchestra, and, over the last fifteen years, has developed a reputation as a top-class local musician. Playing with Tom will be Owen Morgan (bass) and Neil Kane (drums).
The music starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £8 and can be obtained from the box office (Tel: 01263 822347) or on-line at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.ccom
Have a jazzy festive season!
was solemn and reflective, where even the atonal progressions were brought to a peaceful resolution.
Sakura Theme and Variations by Japanese composer Yuquijiro Yocoh based on a folk song - using the pentatonic scale created an Eastern flavour.
Hot Club Francais by Gary Ryan, written for Manus Noble - varied in both classical and jazz styles of the great Django Reinhardt.
Nightshade Rounds by American composer Bruce MacCombie - starting with single notes the piece gradually progressed to short cells of music with arpeggios and an ever increasing tempo - matching its title as it ventured in tone gradations of light, shade and darkness.
Mallorca by Isaac Albeniz - transcribed from piano score to guitar in two distinct sections - here the music was Spanish guitar, played at its very best.
Niel Gow’s Lament for the Death of his Second Wife (arr David Russell) had a classical Celtic lilt but also some sombre textures akin to bereavement.

Mirage and Inishowen composed by Manus Noble consisted of a variety of style, from mystic Arabian drone tonalities with written improvisations, Indian dance styles and short Western effects.
This young guitarist brought rapturous applause from an almost capacity audience who witnessed the incredible effects from the guitar in the hands of an undoubted master.
For an encore Manus Noble played Rock Weed Arizona by Gary Ryan which brought to a close this wonderful experience of seeing and hearing a truly brilliant guitarist, who captured the imagination, in music, of a great variety of colours which blended with the colours of nature. Terry Keeler

North Norfolk District Council celebrates ten-year relationship with Holt Day Centre
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is celebrating ten years of working together successfully with volunteers from Holt Day Centre at Green Flag award-winning Holt Country Park.
For the last ten years, NNDC’s Countryside Rangers have been joined by volunteers from Holt Day Centre to undertake practical conservation work including building a sensory garden, making butterfly habitats, planting trees, gardening and creating habitats for mini beasts and amphibians.
Glyn Williams, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “Many of the projects that have been completed at Holt Country Park could not have been done so without the help of the volunteers from Holt Day Centre. Together with our Countryside Rangers, they have formed an enduring partnership that I hope will continue for many more years to come.
“The volunteers have made a significant contribution to improving the natural environment at Holt Country Park while building confidence and
UÜÉãÇxËá
self-esteem and developing strong working relationships with the Rangers”
John Orris, Holt Day Centre Supervisor, added “I’ve been bringing groups of volunteers to Holt Country Park for the last ten years and have witnessed the pleasure and the satisfaction they’ve gained from carrying out many different tasks, including the recent construction of the popular sensory garden.
“I am extremely proud of the attitude of the Holt Day Centre members and their positive contribution to the Park. I would also like to pay tribute to the Rangers who have worked with us so successfully. Their patience and skills and the cheerful manner in which they work really motivates the members who thoroughly enjoy their time at the Park.” Shrubs and a selection of gardening tools were presented to John Orris and the Holt Day Centre members by Cllr. Williams at an event held at Holt Country Park on Wednesday 19 November in recognition of the successful ten-year partnership.
Always a warm welcome

Jewson counts down to Christmas in Cromer The Cromer branch of Jewson has donated materials to help create a giant advent calendar tree, as part of the town’s annual alternative Christmas tree countdown. Cromer town centre is becoming famous for its unusual churchyard Christmas trees, an event that is now in its third year.
This year is no exception, with a 3D, seven metre-tall green and red pyramid tree that is located in the front of the churchyard on Church Street. It is decorated with festive lights and 25, 30cm x 40cm individual wooden boxes, which are to be opened every day in December in the lead up to Christmas.
The Christmas tree will be unveiled as the Christmas lights are switched on at a ceremony in Cromer Town Centre on Saturday 6 December at 5pm.
Our picture shows an artist’s impression of what the tree would look like as it was still under construction at the time of going to print.
The tree, designed by local Cromer firm James Bond Architecture, will include 25 separate boxes decorated by the local community. To help create the tree, Jewson’s Cromer branch donated a range of materials including 16 sheets of 12mm Norbord OSB boards, a variety of treated timber, three boxes of wood screws, tins of green and red emulsion paint.
Greg Bailey, Branch Manager at Cromer Jewson, who was contact by Reverend Sharon Willimott, Chair of Cromer Christmas Lights Committee, about making the donation, said “Cromer has a great community feel and I am extremely happy that Jewson were able to help with such an important donation towards the local town and its
Christmas celebration tradition. We are always encouraged to take part in helping the local community in any way possible so being able to donate these materials for such a fantastic community project makes me proud to work at Jewson and be part of the community.”

We did not have a speaker in November as it was also our Annual Meeting. We had our normal meeting first, then after a break for tea we had our Annual Meeting.
During our normal meeting plans were made to go and see Sister Act at the Treatre Royal in Norwich and a visit to Gressenhall for the WI Centenary in July next year.
Some of our members had been on the local Coasthopper bus which had carried a WI baton to Kings Lynn and back as part of the relay that was taking the baton all round the country.
The competition for a pair of earrings was won by Eileen Tucker, Hazel Patrickson was second and Pru Mead was third. The winner of the competition for the whole year was Pat Fisher first, Hazel Patrickson second and Judy Roberts third.
We then went on to have our Annual Meeting.
Sheringham based trailer hire at affordable prices and a personal service.
At North Norfolk Trailer Hire, we have a small fleet of trailers available for hire per half day, full day, weekend, week or long term.
If you need to move a vehicle or just take some rubbish to the tip we may be able to supply the trailer for the job from as little as 4 hour hire.
Insurance cover included at no extra cost.
Need a number plate - we are registered number plate makers and can make you a plate and have it ready and waiting when you collect the trailer. Securing straps also available for a nominal charge.
There was no challenge to Glenice Knight standing again as President and she thanked all members for their help and hard work. The new committee was introduced with three new members and one member stepping down. The Secretary gave her report of a very successful year which ended up with us having 64 members. We did lots of activities and took part in many local events and had quite a few trips out. We hope to see lots of new members in the coming year.
In December we will be entertained by our own Shoe String Players and in January will be given a cookery display by two of our own members. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER CHRISTMAS CACTUS
The plant we normally see offered for sale at this time of the year called the Christmas Cactus is part of the genus Schlumbergia and is one of six species found in the coastal mountains of South America.
The plants grow on trees or rocks in habitats which are generally shady with high humidity. Most of the species have stems which resemble leaf-like pads joined one to the other and flowers which appear from aereoles at the joints and tips of the stems. This genus also contains other popular plants such as Thanksgiving Cactus, Crab Cactus and Holiday Cactus. Confusingly the Easter or Whitsun Cactus is placed in a separate genus (Hatiora).
• Growing medium - Free-draining, humus-rich, somewhat acid growing media are used for the commercial production, such as a mixture of peat or leaf mould and an inert material such as grit or sharp sand. A standard cactus compost or John Innes No.2 with added leaf mould or grit will help to improve drainage. Re-pot once a year (or at least every two years) to maintain healthy growth. This can be done at the end of March which is the beginning of the growing season. • Watering - They are more tolerant of
drought than many house plants, but can be damaged by both under- and over-watering. Keeping the soil just moist throughout the year avoids either extreme. Humidity can

It is believed that Schlumbergias have been in cultivation in Europe since 1818 and due to cross breeding there are now hundreds of
varieties. The aim of breeders was to produce plants which grow strongly, were upright at the point of sale rather than pendulous, had many flowers or buds, and were adapted to living as house plants. Much effort has also produced a wide range of flower colours including yellow. Despite all the confusion over names and botanical classification the following general advice should help you care for any plant you are given as a present or allow you to continue to look after that straggly specimen that granny passed on to you
be improved by using gravel filled saucers beneath the plants and keeping these moist.
• Light - They can be damaged by exposure to more than small amounts of sunlight. Too much light causes stems to take on a reddish colour; however, very low light levels will prevent flowering. Day length is important to cause flower buds to form and the ideal is said to be a period of about 8 days with 16 hours of darkness at 16 degrees. • Propagation - Use short pieces of stem, one to three segments long, twisted off rather than cut. Cuttings are allowed to dry for 1-7 days, forming a callus at the broken end, and then rooted in an open growing medium. Temperatures between 21 and 27 degrees centigrade in long day/short night conditions speed rooting • Pests and diseases - These plants are generally free from trouble apart from aphids and mealy bugs. Also look out for rotting of stems and leaves. There are chemical treatments.
Looking forward to next summer these cacti can be placed outside as this will help them ripen new growth and encourage flowering but you will need to protect them from slugs!

First seal pups of the season born at Blakeney Point
The first seal pups were born on Blakeney Point last month, marking the start of a breeding season that could see the National Trust nature reserve become England’s biggest colony of Grey Seals.
Blakeney Point, on the north Norfolk coast, has become famous for its breeding Grey Seal colony in recent years. Since 2001, when 25 pups were born, numbers have increased each year. Last winter, 1,566 pups were born, making Blakeney Point the third largest Grey Seal colony in England.
With numbers of pups born increasing by around 25% each year, Blakeney Point could become England’s biggest colony this year. A couple of weeks into the 2014 season and there are already significantly more pups than last year. By Thursday 13 November, 265 pups had been counted, 63 more than by the same date last year.
Ajay Tegala, a National Trust ranger who lives
a perfect breeding site for Grey Seals.
“Grey Seal pups are born on land, with white coats,” added Ajay. “They are fed on their mother’s rich milk for up to three weeks. In this time, they triple in size and shed their white fur. The mother then leaves the pup to fend for itself. Mating takes place soon after pupping. Male seals, bulls, fight for territories and the dominant ones will mate with several females. This makes the colony a dramatic, but dangerous place.”
on Blakeney Point, said “We’ve seen a dramatic increase in the number of Grey Seal pups being born at Blakeney Point in recent years. It is great news and a nice reward for all the effort the National Trust team put into caring for the Point, ensuring it is a healthy environment for these beautiful animals.”
Pup survival rates are high. With lots of space and no natural predators, Blakeney Point is
Blakeney Point is part of Blakeney National Nature Reserve, where the Ranger team protect and monitor the seal colony. For the safety of seals and visitors, the western-most mile of beach and dunes on the Point are fenced off during the breeding season, which runs from 1 November to 1 February. Pups are counted and taken to the RSPCA animal hospital if seriously ill or injured.
Labour supports crucial pub vote in the House of Commons
Pub campaigners have welcomed a new cross-party clause to the Small Business Bill which offer new protections for local publicans against the predatory practices of large pub owning companies (known as pubcos).
Following a report into the industry by the cross-party BIS Select Committee in 2010, the Labour Party has campaigned alongside a broad coalition of groups in the industry – including the Federation of Small Businesses, the Forum of Private Business, and CAMRA – to call for greater protection for local pubs and put a stop to unfair treatment and restrictive practices by pubcos.
The government promised to regulate pubcos in the Small Business Bill, debated in Parliament last month, but these fell some way short of Labour's plans and campaigners' demands. Labour therefore supported a cross-party clause to strengthen the Bill which was passed in November. 30
However, the North Norfolk Labour Party has expressed disappointment that local MP Norman Lamb voted against it especially as a number of pubs in the constituency have suffered under the action of some pubcos.
Denise Burke, Labour's Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said "I am delighted that the House of Commons has supported this motion which will give a boost to local pubs if implemented. Now ministers must act quickly to ensure there is a proper statutory code with a free-of-tie option to protect local pubs, and must not ignore this important vote.
It is a shame that Norman Lamb did not support this bill when many of his colleagues defied the whip, but if elected in May I will continue to fight for local pubs in North Norfolk which are such an important asset in the community."
Cromer Times 459 December 6th 2014
Norman Lamb secures talks to find a solution for North Norfolk coast Following the impact of the North Sea tidal surge in December 2013, North Norfolk District Council is holding talks with Bacton Terminal Complex operators (BTC) to consider what actions are needed to secure the nationally important asset.
25% of Britain’s national gas supply enters the country through the gas pipelines at Bacton. The operators of the Bacton Terminal Complex have jointly worked with NNDC over many years regarding the management of erosion risk to the terminal. The 2013 surge caused new cliff losses and the BTC operators need to ensure that any further erosion is managed to prevent this nationally important infrastructure being put at risk.
Concerns were raised earlier this year with North Norfolk MP, Norman Lamb and NNDC. The terminal operators had identified the requirement to pursue an integrated approach which could involve shared public and private funding to manage coastal erosion in the local vicinity. Norman Lamb therefore co-ordinated a meeting at Parliament between Energy Secretary, Ed Davey MP, Coastal Minister, Dan Rogerson MP and senior figures from the Environment Agency, NNDC and the BTC operators. It was agreed at the meeting that the preferred approach to protect the terminal at Bacton would be to link it to wider works to ensure that other communities are not put at risk. These plans
are complex and require numerous stakeholder approvals and involvement.
Key organisations will report to Ministers at another meeting due to take place early next year to ensure that progress is made on this important issue. NNDC and the BTC operators are currently carrying out an investigation in to the key considerations and options which will then help to form a proposed approach. The investigation will need to consider coastal protection options alongside alternatives such as enabling infrastructure and communities to adapt to a changing coastline. The proposed technical solution will be discussed with the relevant local communities.
Norman Lamb MP commented “I was determined to make sure that this meeting took place so that ministers could understand the need for local organisations to work together to protect the coastal communities alongside the Bacton Terminal.
NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Coastal, Angie Fitch-Tillett, said “Such an opportunity to jointly work with communities, private companies and central government is hugely positive and will provide the best opportunity for progress and a unified way forward.”

“Dan Rogerson, the Lib Dem Environment Minister, very recently visited Walcott and really understands the challenges we face. I am pleased that we were able to agree a way forward, and I will continue to monitor progress closely over the coming months to make sure that we keep up the momentum.”

Campaign to save Mental Health Services
We in the Campaign to save Mental Health Services in Norfolk and Suffolk find it hard to stomach Norman Lamb’s continuous efforts to present himself as the champion of the mentally ill. He has been a Health Minister and Secretary of State with special responsibility for social care and mental health for 4 years now. Under his watch funding for mental health has actually fallen for the first time for many years creating a national crisis in the provision of acute psychiatric care (over 1700 beds have been lost nationally).
In Norfolk and Suffolk, the so-called Nicholson challenge has meant a cut of £40 million over the last 4 years leading to the decimation of community care for the most vulnerable, the abolition of community mental health nurses who were attached to GP surgeries, the closure of specialist assertive outreach teams which provided intensive support and monitoring of the most severely mentally ill, the loss of the Mental Health Homeless Team in Norwich, and the loss of over 120 beds in Norfolk and Suffolk. Crisis Teams – one of Norman Lamb’s pet subjects – have also been badly hit by downgrading of staff and the loss of experienced practitioners. Currently, the main provider of mental health services, Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT), is in a precarious financial state and because of concerns about the standard of care has just been subject to an intensive inspection by the CQC. At any one time if any of your readers requires an urgent admission to psychiatric hospital it is unlikely that this will be to a local hospital. Last week there were 48 patients from Norfolk scattered across the country in hospitals in places as far away as Darlington and Weston-super-mare (see our attached Map of Shame).Other patients experience serious delays before they can be admitted and some have had to be held illegally in police custody until a bed can be found. Despite this dire situation NSFT are now facing a further 5 years of cost-saving (the 1.8% deflator) which will mean a further £40 million of cuts over the next 5 years and even more redundancies and loss of services.
Norman Lamb is fully aware of these problems because we have let him know consistently the full extent of the crisis, and to be fair to Mr Lamb he is very supportive of individuals who come to him for help, and therefore has a good grasp of the situation on the ground. However, he claims he is helpless to do anything about the funding crisis because NHS England are independent of government, He says he campaigns on behalf of mental health and now has a petition for the future funding of the NHS. But is he not a Minister in the current Government? Why does he need to campaign against himself? He and his fellow MPs voted for the Health and Social Care Bill which created our current system of funding. What is the point of voting for Mr Lamb if even as a Health Minister he is helpless? The Liberal Democrats are once again making promises about the future funding of mental health services, but we remember Clegg’s record on tuition fees. If you would like to support the Campaign please visit our website http//norfolksuffolkmentalhealthcrisis.org.uk/ or contact us on 01263 825967. We are holding an anniversary open meeting on 27/11/14 at 7.30 pm Vauxhall Centre, Norwich, where we will be debating the above issues and planning the next steps in our campaign. ALL WELCOME. Terry Skyrme, on behalf of the Campaign to Save Mental Health Services in N&S.

Mental Health Issues - norman Lamb Responds
There has always been an institutional bias against mental health in our NHS, and in society. When the last government legislated for waiting time standards in physical health, they left out mental health. When they introduced a right to patient choice for hospital treatment, they left out mental health. And when they set up “Payment by Results” to tackle long waiting lists, Labour left out mental health. This has inevitably meant that, when money is tight, mental health loses out in local spending decisions.
As health minister, I have been determined to tackle this. We have legislated to be clear that mental health must have complete equality with physical health in the NHS. In April this year we extended the right of choice to include mental health treatment. And at the Liberal Democrat conference in Glasgow last month, we announced from next year the first waiting time standards for mental health too, so most patients will be guaranteed access to talking therapies in as little as six weeks from referral. We will also introduce a new standard next year to start treatment within two weeks of a first episode of psychosis.
At the same time as we announced these new standards, we published a five year vision for the introduction of comprehensive access and waiting time standards across mental health. The aim is to achieve real equality for those suffering mental ill health. These announcements were enthusiastically welcomed by charities nationally. It was described as a watershed moment.
We are also tackling the unacceptable inequality in mental health crisis care: Norfolk recently signed up to the “Crisis Care Concordat”, which sets clear national standards for emergency treatment. And in 2015/16 we are investing £30m extra in liaison psychiatry to make sure that psychiatric help is available in A and E departments.
But I am far from complacent: the fact is that in much of the country mental health services are still nowhere near good enough. In particular services for young people are sometimes completely unacceptable. I launched a Task Force earlier this year to look at how we can modernise services, improving access and ending the current “cliff-edge” when people move from under-18 to adult services. And as part of my current campaign (www.normanlamb.org.uk) to secure extra funding for the NHS next year, I am hoping we can secure investment to start delivering the improvements to young people’s services we desperately need.
North Norfolk MP recognised nationally for work on mental health
This week North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has been recognised by two organisations for his work on mental health.
Norman attended a ceremony with the Political Studies Association to accept their annual award for "Best use of evidence in policy making", recognising his work in driving reform of mental health services that have been neglected for far too long.
The judges for the PSA award said, “Norman Lamb was the unanimous winner of this award for his outstanding work on mental health. His work with the Royal College of Nursing, Skills for Health and Skills for Care to develop new guidance for professionals as well as workforce training guidelines must also be strongly commended”.
The judges also praised Lamb for his launch of Positive and Safe, a two-year programme to end the deliberate use of face-down restraint in all health and care settings.
Norman Lamb said, “It is a real honour to have been recognised by the Political Studies Association and Nuffield College for my work on mental health, and more generally. Mental health is an area that has been neglected for far too long and I am determined to ensure patients can access the support they need.”

MP presents cheques to local health charities after fundraising cycle ride
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb recently presented a cheque to Cromer Hospital following his 100 mile fundraising bike ride in September. The money raised was put towards the purchasing of a new ophthalmology laser, nabling more patients to receive specialist eye treatment locally.
Norman Lamb said “It is a pleasure to be able to present cheques to the charities and hospitals we raised money for in September. It was good that we were able to support the acquisition of the new laser for Cromer Hospital which will provide new ophthalmological services for North Norfolk residents. Seeing the money put to good use makes everyone’s effort seem absolutely worthwhile.
Norman Lamb also visited other hospitals and charities across the constituency to present their cheques with two other presentations at Kelling Hospital and at Wells.
Iain MacKechnie Jarvis, Chair of Wells Community Hospital Trust, said ‘We are so delighted that Norman Lamb included us in the charities he was supporting on his sponsored cycle ride. The money he has raised for us will go towards the purchase of a

Northrepps in the late 19th and early 20th centuries is brought to life in a new book, The Golden Age, by Graham Ferguson who until recently lived in The Old Foundry. Based on the craft skills of John Golden and his father and grandfather, the book draws on villagers' memories as well as more formal archive sources. The broad range of topics includes foundry work, the Gallas plough, undertaker duties and the local church. Baker dominates to retain his title
John Baker, the No.1 seed, retained his title last month when he won Cromer Squash Club’s Over 35 tournament for the third time defeating first team captain, Martin Sanville, who was appearing in his first final, 9-5 9-1 9-7. Baker has been a stalwart of the club for over 30 years and since announcing himself as a talented teenager when he won the handicap tournament for the first time in 1984 he went on to win two more handicap tournaments, as well as the club championship four times between 1985 and 1990 before winning his first Over 35 title in 2004. The prestigious Over 35 tournament which was held for the first time in 1985 is known as The Jeff Morris Memorial trophy and is held annually in memory of Jeff who died at the club earlier that year. The club was delighted that Jeff’s son Jeff and daughter Debbie were among the large crowd that watched the final from the balcony and that after the match Debbie presented the prizes to the two finalists. Baker, who Technical Director Barry Starling says still hits the ball cleaner and more correctly than any player in the club, went into the final as the clear favourite but it
was Sanville who went into a 3-0 lead and after the serve changed hands several times eventually led 5-4. However, after regaining the serve Baker won four successive points to lead 8-5 before taking the game 9-5.
The second game was one way traffic. Baker opened up a 6-0 lead as his relentless pressure forced Sanville into making mistakes and he took the game 9-1 to lead 2-0. Sanville, however, put up a spirited performance in the third game. He led 6-3 and 7-4 but then, crucially, made an unforced error as an attempted back hand drop shot ended in the tin. Baker took his chance and lost only one more rally as he eased his way into an 8-7 lead and took the title on his first match ball.
John Baker (left) and Martin Sanville
In the semi-final Baker had defeated the tournament’s oldest competitor, John Chandler 3-0 while Sanville, who has played in three handicap tournament finals winning in 2013, won 3-0 against Steve Booth. Booth, in fact, created the one major shock when he won his quarter final against the No.2 seed, and last year’s beaten finalist Gary Spruce in four games.
John Baker (left), Debbie Banner and Martin Sanville
After the match the Technical Director, who lost his first round match, said “Johnny Baker gave an object lesson to those watching in how to approach a final. He concentrated on the basics, hitting the ball cleanly and driving to the back corners. Martin was always up against it and as a result of John’s pressure he made too many unforced errors.”
After receiving his trophy Baker said “It is no secret that this tournament means a lot to me. If it hadn’t been for Jeff I would never have joined the fire service almost 30 years ago. He encouraged me from the start and for that I will always be grateful. Next year will be the thirtieth anniversary and it would be great if I was able to make it three in a row.”
