Crab and Lobster Festival 2015
Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent
From 15 - 17th May, Cromer and Sheringham will host the sixth Crab and Lobster Festival.
This year, the Food Trail will involve a bit of learning and a bit of silliness. 25 venues across Cromer and Sheringham will display a Sea Food Fact in their restaurant windows, writes Isaac Cummings-Knight. These facts will be, in the words of President Noel: “some true, some false, some silly!”, so it will be up to participants to work out which are true for themselves. A change from last year is that there will be no formal prize for the best score.
The Art Trail this year will be wheel decorating. It is £60 to buy a wheel. The winners will be announced 30th August.

Crab and Lobster Festival 2015
Continued from front cover... The program for the festival includes music, art, food, and heritage. Musical groups: Backdraught and the Sheringham “Shantymen” will perform. There will also be a cook theatre, a heritage marquee, fishermen activities, and many seafood outlets. Most stalls will be in Cromer but both towns will be sharing the major events between them. Chairman Tony Shipp said it is no longer possible to shift all activities and events from Cromer to Sheringham to split the festival evenly.
For the third year running, the Festival ran its Community Grant Scheme that aims to support local organisations and charities.
On January 15th the committee revealed a total of £4000 was successfully raised to make grants which have been awarded to the following organisations: Roughton Crazy Kids Club, Age UK,
Sheringham After Breast Cancer, Halsey House, Cromer Walkers are Welcome, Sheringham Beach Life, Sheringham Primary School, North Norfolk Fit Together, Cromer Christmas Lights, Sheringham Coast Watch, Cromer and Sheringham Art and Literary Festival, Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society, Sheringham Woodfields School, Cromer and District Garden Society, Friends of Roughton School, Sidestrand Hall School, Roughton Under Fire Playgroups, Cromer War Memorial Fund.
Since its debut six years ago, what began as collaboration between Cromer and Sheringham Town Councils to promote cooperation between the historic rivals and increase tourism had become a huge success in a short

Andrew uses high quality cleaning materials, as well as a great deal of good old-fashioned elbow grease, in order to remove grease and grime and leave customers’ cookers sparkling clean!
After seven years of running “The Sun Deck” Bed & Breakfast in Sheringham, Andrew has now moved on to developing the vintage business which he runs with his wife Sheila. They have a little shop called “Lily Likes…” in the centre of Sheringham (opposite The Lobster Public House) which offers a wide range of vintage and antique china, pictures, accessories, books, magazines, clothes, curios and trinkets. The success of this venture has given Andrew the “vintage-bug”, and he also now offers a similar range of vintage and antique small furniture and goods from The Mews Emporium in Holt.
To book Clutterbugs oven cleaning service or enquire about Lily Likes…, phone Andrew on 01263 479719 or 078 7622 1978. Lily Likes also has a Facebook page; visit www.facebook.com/lilylikessheringham - or better still, call into either outlet for a good browse soon!

Two serving members of RNLI Cromer who got engaged on 24 December 2013, married at Gretna Green Christmas week 2014.
RNLI Cromer crew members Rose Keating and David Syer have been a couple for two years. Rose works for Norfolk County Council as a Mathematics advisor to schools and David in logistics.
Rose has been a serving member of RNLI Cromer shore crew for six years, having moved to Norfolk nearly 12 years ago, although David only met her just over two years ago.
Soon after meeting Rose, David decided to also join the RNLI lifeboat crew, because it would mean they would have a joint interest and could spend more time together.

The wedding clothes had a definite RNLI connection with the happy couple adorning their wedding clothes with yellow RNLI socks for the groom and boots for the bride!
Whilst Rose is shore based, David is on the boat crew for both the all weather lifeboat Lester as well as the inshore George and Muriel. Rose said ‘I help to launch the boat and wave all the crew, including David, off to sea and the professionalism of the crew means we all work together as a team to ensure the high standards of the RNLI service are maintained’.
Everyone connected with Cromer RNLI congratulated the couple when they announced their news at the January crew meeting.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon
January is proving to be a busy time for us all at the White Horse with a number of private parties using the Barn Restaurant for special occasions and celebrations. Our 2 for 1 lunchtime offer every weekday will continue into February with a choice of tasty lunchtime dishes ideal for the colder weather.
Don’t forget to book your table for Valentine’s Day which this year is a Saturday. Our romantic 6 Course dinner served in the restaurant at just £35 per person is already booking so to be sure of getting a table I suggest you book as soon as possible. The Norfolk Jazz Quartet will be performing in the bar from 8.30pm so if you wish you can join the regulars in the bar and enjoy a musical end to your evening. Mothers’
Day is not far off and we will be announcing our menu for that very special day very soon but as ever my advice is to book early and remember that our children’s menu will be available so as much as it a special day for Mum the whole family can enjoy a meal out. This month’s recipe is from our Second Chef Mark Young, which I hope you will enjoy making.
MARK YOUNG’S RECIPE FOR BANANA AND WALNUT BREAD INGREDIENTS 3 1/2 Cups of Plain Sifted Flour, 2 Teaspoon of Bicarbonate of Soda 1/2 Teaspoon of Cinnamon, 1/2 Teaspoon of Salt,
4 Large Eggs 2 1/2 Cups opf Sugar, 1 Cup of Vegetable Oil, 3 Cups of Mashed Bananas 1/4 Cup of Creme Fraiche, 1 1/2 Cups of Walnuts
METHOD Beat together the Eggs and Sugar, add the Oil, Bananas and Creme Fraiche. Fold in the sifted Flour, Bicarbonate Soda, Cinnamon and Salt. Chop the Walnuts and add to mixture. Put the mixture into a lined baking tray and bake on 160 degrees for 1 hour

We had the pleasure of Keith Skipper drawing the tickets in the raffle, which made the evening very entertaining. The Chairman, Robert Middleditch, founder member Mrs MacPherson and Georgina, Office Manager, also attended.
LPG & NATURAL GAS
5 Year Parts & Labour Manufacturers’ Warranty on all Boilers
I must take this opportunity to thank all the local businesses for the wonderful raffle prizes that they donated. The total sum raised was £1607.
It is nice to know that local people can be so generous, especially local residents who have given items for table top sales that we hold throughout the year. We must also thank Steve at The Lighthouse Inn, Walcott for all his help and support. Steve does so much work to help local charities, not only us but many more besides.

Fascinating film for Northrepps After great success with three Buster Keaton films accompanied live on the piano on New Year’s Day, Northrepps Film Society looks forward to showing a more recent film on Thursday 5 February. The Wave is about an experiment in a German high school where the politics teacher turns his
class into a real-life example of autocratic government. Surprisingly, the students take to their role as his devoted followers and the scene is set for a fascinating human drama. Made in 2008 in German with English subtitles, this is a gripping and thought-provoking film that anyone can enjoy. Doors open at 7pm at Northrepps Village Hall, where refreshments are available until the show begins at 7.30pm. For more details see www.northreppsfilmsociety.co.uk.

Children Go Free at Bure Valley Railway!
COASTAL JAZZ
The popularity of the Norfolk Jazz Quartet continues to grow and the band has three dates on the North Norfolk Coast in February.
The first date will be Monday 2 February for Mundesley Rhythm Club at The Ship Inn. The club has been supporting local musicians and live music for many years and does not charge for admission. If, however, you buy a raffle ticket it helps the club to meet its costs. The music starts at 8pm.
The Teddy Bear Express at the Bure Valley Railway returns for the children’s half term holiday from 14th to 22nd February 2015. The Railway’s resident bear will take charge again at Aylsham Station to ensure nine days of fun for all the family!
On Saturday 14 February the quartet moves north along the coast to Overstrand for a St. Valentines event at The White Horse. The band will play in the bar and admission will, once again, be free but if you would like a romantic six course dinner in the restaurant (£35) it is essential to book. Tel: 01263 579237. The band will start playing at 8.30pm.
On Sunday 15 February the Quartet heads for The Hub at Sheringham Little Theatre where a capacity audience is expected from amongst the jazz enthusiasts of North Norfolk’s premier seaside town. Tickets are £8 and are available from the box office in person between 9.30am and 4pm Monday to Saturday (Tel: 01263 822347) or on-line at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com
The Quartet plays melodic jazz standards and music from the Great American Song Book and really swings. The musicians also make-up two thirds of the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band, the county’s ‘coolest’ traditional jazz ensemble and will continue to play regularly at the Goat Inn, Skeyton, throughout 2015. This is another venue where admission is free and you can just drop in for a drink but if you want to be sure of a table for lunch it is always wise to book. Tel: 01692 538600. The next gig will be Sunday 1 February at 1.30pm.
Trains will operate from both Aylsham and Wroxham stations three times per day. A children’s competition to see how many teddy bears can be spotted on the train journey, a colouring corner and a decorated Whilstlestop Café add to this teddy bear themed event.
To make this truly a children’s event, the Railway is giving free travel to every child when accompanied by a fare-paying adult (maximum 2 children per adult). No prior booking required.
P.S. Don’t forget to bring your own teddy so that the Railway Bear is not lonely!

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Every cat that comes into our care, visits one of our vets for a health check as soon as possible after arrival. Once they have established the cat is in good health and advised if flea and worm treatments are required, they will vaccinate and microchip the cat (if this has not already been done). If the cat has not been neutered, an appointment is made for this to take place. Kittens, however, will not been seen, unless they have a health problem, until they are 9 weeks old, which is when they have their first vaccination. They will not be chipped until they have the second vaccination which can be after they have left for their new homes. Because we believe vaccinating and chipping are important, we do pay for this to be done.
We do on occasion have cats come into care that have been chipped but have found in the past that the owner’s details have not been kept up to date and sometimes the owner has not even registered their details with the micro chip company. It is important to remember to do this, especially when you move home, to make sure that should your cat go missing after the move you can be reunited with it.
Vaccinating and chipping our cats is very important as is neutering them. As well as the health benefits for the cats it does mean that there are not so many unwanted and abandoned cats needing our help. It is one of the aims of Cats Protection to encourage people to neuter their pets and as a consequence the vouchers we now offer those who require help have been increased to £40 for females and £25 for males, which goes a long way towards the actual cost of the operations and will hopefully mean more people contact us for help. With fewer cats becoming pregnant at this time of the year, now is a good time to contact our neutering line to see if you are eligible for help.
Spring
It’s spring, it’s spring, How those birds sing! There’s just a little breeze Nodding the snowdrops Under the trees. A gentle fawn drinks by the stream, An owl swoops by, What a magical scene. In our garden we can see Daffs popping up here and there Under every tree.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Lepto4 Vaccination
In January 2015 we launched a new programme to include the new Lepto4 vaccination. Previous vaccines were only able to protect dogs against two known strains of the disease but new strains of the infection, not covered by conventional vaccines, are now being seen. The new vaccine will protect dogs against four strains of Leptospirosis giving a much broader defence against the rise of this potentially fatal disease.
Whether your dog is
Small
or
Big
The vaccine will be given to ALL dogs seen for vaccination from 2nd January 2015, this will require an initial course of 2 vaccinations so if your dog is only in for its routine booster you will need to come back in 4 weeks for another injection. This second injection will be FREE OF CHARGE and is essential to maintain cover for your dog. The timing of this second vaccine is important so please make sure you attend both the appointments given to you. Puppies will automatically be started on the new vaccine and will also require a course of 2 vaccinations 4 weeks apart followed by annual booster vaccinations thereafter. THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER
GROW YOUR OWN ‘ELEPHANT’ EARS
by snowdrops, the effect is dramatic. This variety has deep coral-pink flowers.
Their common names do not flatter bergenias. The dull greyness suggested by their nickname ‘elephant’s ears is very misleading as they can provide colour for much of the year from both their foliage and their flowers. Another name, ‘Pigsqueak’, derived from the sound of a thumb rubbing across the shiny leaf surface, is hardly more enticing. Unfortunately they have tended to be dismissed alongside privet and ferns, pampas grass and monkey puzzle trees as more suited to shady Victorian gardens.
At this time of the year colour is always welcome in our gardens and the first snowdrops and aconites always lift the heart. In front of the Priory Maze there are some very early daffodils already in bloom by mid January and beside the wall of the old police station in Sheringham the long bed of bergenias already have their pink flowers. This variety is B. Cordifolia but as mentioned below there are newer better varieties.
Bergenias are indeed one of the season’s most valuable plants – not only for their flowers and their richly coloured architectural foliage but for their value as foils to other winter plants and bulbs. For sheer brilliance of colour the variety ‘Eric Smith’ has long been a star. Created by one of the most famous breeders, and named after him when introduced in the 1970s by Beth Chatto; in some seasons the leaf colour is almost scarlet. The leaves are upright, the plants form tight clumps, and surrounded
A little more open in habit, ‘Bressingham Ruby’ has red-pink flowers and a burgundy tone to its leaves and more arching, slightly rippled foliage, while the neat, small-leaved ‘Abendglut’ also features more open growth with magenta flowers and leaves that are wine-coloured on the backs for months before the whole plant becomes purplish in winter.
Fish, a great fan of bergenias, who confirms their great virtues , ‘They do not mind at all where they grow, in sun or shade, in soil with or without lime, in walls or paving, fat living in rich beds or starvation in poor soil. You can pull bits off at any time and each piece will grow without the leaves showing any sign that an operation has taken place, in fact I cannot remember ever seeing a wilting bergenia.’
Bob Wilkinson
I also understand, that there are two variegated varieties although I have not seen them growing anywhere. ‘Tubby Andrews’ is streaked and splashed with gold and cream on a green background and cream-edged ‘Solar Flare’ is more hosta-like, with a green centre and an irregular cream and yellow margin.
Bergenias are undemanding, growing happily in shade or sun as long as the soil is not too dry. Colour is often better in less fertile soil. Nip off old foliage as it turns brown so plants look smart before the surrounding spring bulbs flower. Mulch annually. When clumps become gappy lift, discard the older woody growth and replant the young strong shoots. Look out for vine weevils which can be troublesome.
I leave the final words to the famous gardener, Margery

The meeting opened with a cookery demonstration given by one of our members, Val Lodge, which was enjoyed by everyone. In a short time, Val made scones, sponges, éclairs and roulades. Val then kindly donated these items for our regular raffle so everyone was very keen to buy a ticket.
After tea, we resumed the meeting. Congratulations went to Glenice Knight for taking part in the Boxing Day Dip and to Irene Nutt whose Nativity scene in the church won first prize - both raised funds for our Club and our local charity.
Visits being organized for the year include East Ruston Gardens, a play at the Assembly Rooms in Norwich, Ely and Gressenhall Museum where there will be a special display celebrating 100 years of the Women’s Institute. We also expect to take part in the Crab and Lobster Festival and the Cromer Carnival.
Our Competition of a photo frame was won by Yvonne Mileham, with Hazel Patrickson second and Eileen Tucker third.
We had to change our speaker for February and Roger Heath will now be speaking about ‘My Life as a Professional Musician’.
In March, Kindra Jones will be giving a talk entitled ‘The Power Behind the Throne’. Icarus Hines will now be speaking later in the year.

The appeal was launched in September 2013 to raise funds to overhaul Great Eastern Railway (GER) ‘Y14’ Class locomotive (LNER class ‘J15’), which is owned by the M&GN Joint Railway Society and has required a heavy general overhaul to ensure it can return to steam and start hauling trains once again. Cromer Times 462 January 31st 2015
By the early summer of 2015, Cromer will have its own skate park on the Meadow
Maverick, the specialist skate park development company that won the tender to build the skate park, has committed to a provisional start date of 2 March 2015, dependent upon prevailing weather conditions. Maverick expects the park to be fully completed by June this year, and perhaps even in time for the May bank holiday.
The Cromer Skate Park campaign reached its fundraising target of ÂŁ150,000 in September last year. Unfortunately, the building work had to be put on hold until after the winter. Nevertheless, in the meantime there was still much to do to reduce the risk of further delays to the realisation of a dream already several years in the making.
To this end, the committee has been liaising closely with the developers, the surveyors, and the Planning Department of the North Norfolk District Council. The committee chose to appoint SMG Chartered Architects of Sheringham as surveyors, on the strength of their involvement during the construction of the skate park in Sheringham.
The committee has also been collecting the various grants that, together with private donations and the income from countless fundraising initiatives, have made the

entire venture possible.
However, the campaign is far from over, as chair Hillel Fridman is keen to point out: ‘The initial fundraising has finished, but the work of the committee must continue. We are overseeing the installation of the skate park, and shall be monitoring its operation into the future. And, of course, we need to continue raising funds in order to meet the ongoing running costs.'
There is much evidence that skate parks attract greater numbers of tourists, particularly to resort towns,' continues Mr Fridman. 'Therefore we are appealing to local businesses to set up a standing order with the Cromer Skate Park. Even as little as ÂŁ5 or ÂŁ10 per month would help to keep the park thriving, and benefit the community as a whole.'
Other fundraising initiatives are already underway. The Charity Ball at Northrepps Cottage last spring was so successful that a repeat event is planned for Saturday 14th March. And Phil Weston of 'Wet Dog' is raffling off a bespoke specialist skateboard worth a staggering ÂŁ266.50.
Phil explains: 'It was donated to the campaign by a lovely family from Sheffield who have

Double Celebrations for Crayford & Abbs
North Norfolk Nissan dealer Crayford and Abbs are celebrating 10 years of business this month.
The dealership, which is based at Bodham, is planning to mark its anniversary by raising money for two local charities; donating on every sale and service to their chosen charities are The Holt Youth Project and Sheringham Woodfields School.
The birthday celebrations come close on the heels of their success as one of the country’s top dealerships for selling electric Leaf cars in 2014. The dealership came top of their league of 28 rural dealers nationally, having sold 21 Leafs last year, more than double their target, which c ombines with other targeted achievements in 2014won them a luxury holiday in South Africa for Kevin and Elaine Abbs and a gala Dinner in Birmingham, hosted by Nissan Directors for Rupert, James and Paul from the sales team. The Leaf award is a particularly impressive achievement bearing in mind that rural north Norfolk does not have anywhere near the number of charging points as in the cities. Crayford and Abbs have been working with the NNDC to increase charge points in our area.
Sales manager Rupert Fox said ‘For us at Crayford and Abbs, it is a great feat that we have managed to portray the benefits of running such an efficient vehicle given the infrastructure we have in the area’.
For more information about the Leaf and Nissan ranges visit Crayford and Abbs in Gypsies Lane, Bodham (telephone 01263 588160).

SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS
New Year.
On behalf of the members of The Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club may I wish you all a belated Happy
One of the tasks we set ourselves before Christmas is to put together some Christmas Hampers for less well-off families in our local community. We do this by asking local Supermarkets and businesses if they would kindly donate some goodies or vouchers so that we can purchase the required items to put in the hampers. Last year we received donations from Morrison’s, Tesco, Waitrose and Kinnerton Confectionery for which we thank them.
Last December we also did a ‘Pub Dash’ where club members went round the local public houses in Sheringham & Cromer and we collected in
excess of £250 which was used to buy items specifically for the hampers. We would like to give a huge thanks to all those people who dropped money into our collection buckets.
Together with the donated goodies or vouchers and the money collected during the ‘Pub Dash’ we put together 21 Christmas Hampers which were donated to 11 families in Sheringham and 10 families in Cromer. We would like to thank Action for Children in Holt and Sure Start in Cromer for undertaking the task of delivering the hampers to the families on our behalf.
We are now busy getting ready for another fundraising year. We will have our Tombola stall at both the Sheringham Carnival and Cromer Carnival, as well as other venues so please come and see us.

A young choir of school children from Gresham’s Prep School in Holt received confirmation, for the second year running, that they had been selected for the national finals of the Barnardo’s National Choral Competition at London’s prestigious Royal Festival Hall.
The Chapel Choir is the only auditioned choir at Gresham’s Prep and is made up of forty-five children aged between 9 and 13 years. They lead the weekly chapel services at school and

The choir has also benefited from having a composer-inresidence at the school this year, Patrick Hawes. Patrick is a former composer-inresidence at Classic FM and his album Angel was top of the classical charts in April 2014. Most recently, the children performed the premiere of The Stable Carol which he wrote for the school.
In March 2014, the choir also reached the finals of this Choral Competition and performed at London's Barbican. This year, the children will perform on 9 March at the Royal Festival Hall and the school is delighted that the young singers have been given another opportunity to perform in a competition which sees a large number of entries and where the standard of

Mr Waring said of their achievement, “The choir have worked very hard all term performing a wide range of music at various events, including a concert with the English Chamber Orchestra, and it is testament to their effort and commitment in a very busy school that they achieve such a high standard of choral singing. CROMER IN BLOOM REVIEW OF 2014 After a mild winter members of Cromer in Bloom were able to make an early start on the Spring tidy-up.
Each Autumn more bulbs are planted which can be left in the ground to make a good show each year. A new bed in North Lodge Park by the Boating Lake was started in 2013 by our Chairman Jim Bond with help from young people on a training course. This bed is now looked after by new 'Bloom' member Margaret Mitchell who is a keen gardener having previously opened her former garden under the National Gardens Scheme. The two planters on Cromwell Road had a re-vamp thanks to Viv Bateman and looked stunning all summer with cascading petunias. Cromer Railway Station continues to improve with Stan Foxall and Alison Porter doing a great job with the large planters on the platform. Sally and Roger Tipple maintain Links Avenue corner bed and have now taken over part of the former Drought Garden at the top of Norwich Road that had a replant towards the end of last year with lots of bulbs added for Spring colour. John Pretty tends the other section which he has plans to improve this year. This is not an easy task being on the junction of two busy roads. About with Friends look after a bed on behalf of Cromer in Bloom by the Cromer
Reassuringly tasty, nutritious and dependable.
sign on the Norwich Road. Debbie Simpson is still tending the concrete planters by the Bus Station, despite knowing they may be removed at any time - they have looked lovely all season. Jackie Land has a difficult task with the island beds opposite the Tourist Information Centre with traffic coming in all directions and the need to wear a high visability vest! She also works on the bed by Cromer Carpets.
So what do I do - well mainly with help from the others the surrounds of the TIC, barrier baskets, Parish Hall planters, sea front bed by Morrisons' Garage and Cabbell Road (a lot of help needed there) and the front garden of the Town Council Office in North Lodge Park. Cromer in Bloom took part in the Crab and Lobster Fishing Boat Trail with their boat 'Bloomer' painted and planted by Jackie Land and displayed on the island beds. We will take part again this year with the ships wheel, probably to be in the garden at North Lodge.
The Annual Presentation Evening was held in the Garden at North Lodge in August. Charlotte Philcox, who writes for Let's Talk and is a member of BBC Radio Norfolk’s Garden Team judged the Competition attended with Mayor Tony Nash who presented the Certificates and Trophies. The weather was kind so we were able to be outside for the presentations and the buffet. A raffle

And so we come to the beginning of another Cromer year. Some changes are planned, the biggest I think will be the arrival of Henry Blogg's restored fishing boat in the Town Council Garden in North Lodge. Other work will continue weather permitting. If you have a few hours to spare and enjoy gardening, please give me a call for a chat on 01263 513788 you would be most welcome. All that remains now is to wish everyone in Cromer a Happy and Healthy 2015 - let us hope we all have a lovely year.

Christmas was a busy time, of course. Alison, Margaret and Debbie decorated a box for the Advent Tree with a Christmas stocking and toys. Alan Gepp also decorated a box on behalf of Cromer in Bloom for the Air Ambulance. They both survived the gales! Jackie Land designed and made our tree for the Festival with hundreds of fir cones and lights. Our bucket collection at the festival amounted to £125 for the Air Ambulance. We again this year decorated the lobby and hallway of the Parish Hall for the Christmas market. The theme was a garden and woodland. A reindeer made out of logs with twigs for the antlers (made by Alan Gepp) was a great success!
Christmas Sleigh raises over £800 for Air Ambulance
Now that’s a recipe for an easier life. Roast Chicken Breast with Stuffing and vegetables £3.95
on behalf of the East Anglian Air Ambulance raised £68.
The sleigh toured the streets of Cromer on two evenings, raising £385 - the £229 on the second evening being a record so far. The two collections outside Morrisons raised a further £418.
The Club would like to thanks the friends of Rotary - particularly members of the Cromer Christmas Lights Committee and Cromer Town Council who made the street collections so successful.

CROMER HOnOuRS AWARDS The Cromer Town Council Award Scheme to recognise significant achievement by an individual, or group, enters its 18th year. So far well over 100 people or groups have received the awards, which are presented by the Mayor of Cromer at the Annual Town Meeting. Every year one hears of work or a deed being done within our community which enhances the quality of life in our town or of its inhabitants. Much of this work by its very nature, goes largely unrecognized and may not be fully appreciated by the community at large. Any person, young or old, and group or organisation, is eligible to be considered. The Council is looking towards anyone who has made a significant contribution to the quality of an individual, or wider community life in Cromer, during the last year. If you know someone, a group or organisation, who you feel should be considered for an award, please contact the Town Council office for a nomination form which must be completed and returned to the Town Clerk by noon on 27 February 2015. Copies of the nomination form can also be downloaded from the Town Council website www.cromertown.org

Council’s ‘Sports Clubs and Hubs’ project gets off the starting blocks
North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Sports Clubs and Hubs project has started to help more local people get into sport with a variety of different activities available for the over 50s.
Classes ranging from Belly Dancing to Badminton are now available in community ‘hubs’ across North Norfolk and are a cost-effective way to participate in and try a range of new activities. The courses are available for the 50+ age group, cost just £1 per session and can be joined at any stage during a 10 week programme.
The project, which has designed in response to local demand, has been made possible thanks to £211,512 of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Community Sport Activation Fund.
There were well over 200 applications nationally for the fund, and NNDC is among 88 projects to receive a share of £15 million of funding to support grassroots sport activity across the country.
The project aims to build on the work NNDC has already delivered through its highly successful mobile gym service. Emphasis will be placed on making these activities self-supporting in the longer term, something that has already been achieved with a number of ‘community gyms’ in the district.
Glyn Williams, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “I am delighted to see such a positive response from local people following the launch of this great project. It is encouraging to see that many of those who are already taking part are sharing their experiences with friends and family using social media. Our aim is for the activities to become self-supporting after three years, or even sooner if the interest is there, which I am sure it will be.”
The second phase of the project will start in February and will see sporting activities delivered in local schools for 14 – 25 year olds. Activities will include Street Dancing, Martial Arts and Boxing.
To book any of the activities or for more information, please see
www.northnorfolk.org/clubsandhubs or contact Wyn nurse on 01263 516305.
