In response, a steering group of local people came together last October as ‘Friends of North Lodge Park’ to help guide future developments in partnership with the Town Council. Interim Friends chair Carolyn Candish said “

Over the last few years there have been several proposals for development in the park, but unfortunately nothing has happened, and North Lodge Park has become tired looking and in need of some care. "

Much work has already taken place in establishing close working relationships between the Friends and Cromer Town Council in preparation for the expected change of management of the Park from the District to Cromer Town Council. The public appointment of a Friends

Committee at an AGM is the next step in the process to provide representatives with a mandate to speak for the community. Carolyn added “If for any reason the expected change of management does not take place, the Friends will seek to create similar joint working arrangements with whoever manages North Lodge Park”.

North Lodge Park is the five-acre open space perched on the cliff-top east of Cromer town centre around North Lodge, home of the Cromer Town Council.

The park has been a public space since the late 1920s when Cromer Urban District Council purchased North Lodge and grounds for £5,500. The general arrangement of North Lodge Park reflects its history of acquisition and donations by many members of the public. In 1974 the park and buildings were transferred to North Norfolk District Council following a Local Government Review. The North Lodge building was sold back to Cromer Town Council in 2005.

Singer and voice coach returns to her roots

Evie Anderson, Norfolk born and bred, is returning to the Cromer area after a performing career that has taken her all over the world. Operatic mezzo-soprano, Evie started her music education in and around Cromer, beginning piano lessons age 7 with local piano guru Terry Keeler. One of her first stage roles was as one of the Von Trapp children for a 1987 Cromer and Sheringham production of ‘The Sound of Music’ on Cromer Pier.

More recently she has been studying at the Royal Academy of Music with AnneMarie Speed, world famous voice and singing coach. “I started working with AnneMarie about six years ago and she has utterly transformed my understanding of how the voice works and has inspired me to become a teacher. Everyone can learn to sing, and learn to sing beautifully”. She plans to bring the skills learned over many years of performing to those who want to learn and improve their singing. “I am interested in teaching any age and any ability, whether you are a ‘shower-singer’ or an improver, whether you want to sing pop, classical, folk, music theatre or even opera. Singing is a wonderful thing and everyone should be doing it!”

Harrisons

Within the Lettings Team are: Lettings Manager, Gemma Bailey; Senior Property Manager, Melanie Mayes; Property Manager, Julie Elvin; Lettings Negotiator, Lizzie Harrisons; and Accounts Manager, Denise Lewis.

For the last four years, Harrisons have been successfully finding suitable tenants for rental properties and building strong relationships with landlords.

Managing over 250 local properties is, however, no easy task so they have a dedicated Lettings Team who have the skills to provide peace of mind that all properties are well looked after and maintained.

Thanks to a new and complete Lettings Team, a recently refurbished Cromer office, a successful North Walsham branch which opened last year, the launch of Harrisons’ new website and Facebook page and ‘blogging’ on the new website, clients are kept up to date and Harrisons are proving their stability in securing long term relationships with landlords and tenants.

The Strand Club Overstrand - February Meeting On a very cold day our welcome was warm to members and guests alike.

It was a very interesting meeting. Laura Duncan talked first about the origins and history of the Women's League of Health and Beauty which morphed into the Fitness League of the present day. The dedication and determination of its founder Mary Bagot Stack and her daughter Prunella was heart-warming and stirring to hear. Mary began the organisation in 1930 and died only 5 years later, aged just 50. Her daughter Prunella decided to continue with her mother's dream and the principles and growth continued through the years. The war saw its growth slow but once that was over it went from strength to strength, until it became the league we know today.

their carer, Sandra Dalzell. The owls will be tethered, so no flying will take place, but we will be able to pet and photograph them to our hearts' content. The visitors’ entrance fee of £1.50 covers refreshments and raffle tickets will be available separately.

For further information contact the programme co-ordinators Glo Begley on 01263 576539 or Chris Wood on 01263 579433.

Laura then took us through some exercises which were fun, fast and, in some cases confusing! It was good to do them to music and several of us have been bitten by the bug and intend joining the new class Linda will start shortly in the Parish Hall on a Thursday evening.

Our tea and biscuits were particularly welcome.

The March meeting will be our AGM and members are reminded to bring their annual subs (remaining at £7.50) and the payment for the spring lunch which has been moved forward from May to April. This total amount required will be £13 which continues to be very good value for money. We will also be holding a miscellaneous bring and buy at the March meeting which will take place at 2.30 in the Methodist Church on 11 March.

Members are asked to bring their entrance fee of £1 which will cover refreshments. Raffle tickets will be available separately so that anyone can buy as many as they like.

The North Norfolk Model Engineering Club is holding an Open Day on Sunday 22 March between 11am – 4pm at Holt Station on the North Norfolk Railway’s site as part of its 21st Birthday celebrations.

Chairman Gordon Ford said “We would like to be able to share our enjoyment of our engineering hobby with members of the public and give them the opportunity to become involved.

There will be an exhibition of various models which we hope will show the breadth of the club member’s interests, it’s not just about trains!

From the humble early beginnings of a few like-minded friends meeting together in a shed, we know have monthly meetings with 30-40 members at High Kelling Village Hall on the first Friday of the month at 07.30pm, with a variety of interesting speakers planned for the year ahead. New members are always welcome, whether total novice or expert.

The miniature railway is a 1000 ft. of dual gauge track with provision for 5 and 3.5 locomotives, which has now been located at Holt Station for the past 11 years by agreement with the North Norfolk Railway. As well as being used by members the railway is open for public passengers most Sunday afternoons between Easter and October weather permitting and on event days in support of the NNR’s programme.

Please come along on Sunday 22 March to see the model display, meet members, ask questions and have a train ride. Keep up to date with news and running dates by looking on our Facebook page. CROMER WAR MEMORIAL RESTORATION FUND

Classic rock film for Northrepps

After a great show with The Wave, which was very well received on 5 February, Northrepps Film Society is looking forward to showing The Last Waltz on Thursday 5 March.

Made in 1976, this film captures the last concert of The Band, the group that backed Bob Dylan for many years. They are joined by among others Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Neil Diamond and Eric Clapton so we see a veritable roll call of rock royalty on the stage.

Directed by Martin Scorsese, who has made several music-orientated films as well including Raging Bull and Goodfellas, the film slips interviews with band members in between sequences showing performances by the musicians.

Doors at Northrepps Village Hall open at 7pm with refreshments available until the show begins at 7:30pm. For more details, see www.northreppsfilmsociety.co.uk. We hope to see you there!

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY

Our February meeting was very well attended and we were pleased to welcome three new members. This keeps our membership at about sixty but we are always happy to see more new faces. The speaker at the meeting was Peter Skeggs-Gooch from Thorncroft Nursery at Reymerston. As many of you will know, Thorncroft is one of the country’s leading clematis growers and the proud winner of gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Show for the past eight years.

will flower in June and July and produces a second flush in late August/ early September. If planted with clematis “Julka” which flowers in July through to late August there is interest in that part of the garden for over four months.

“Kaiser” was introduced at the Chelsea Flower Show it was the star of the show as its pink rosette-like double flowers and low growing habit attracted the attention of the horticultural press. If you want a clematis to use as ground cover look no further than”Arabella” which flowers from June to September. “Blue Dwarf” is a free standing variety that flowers from July to October and will grow to only 18 inches in height.

Climbing clematis can soften the edges of garden features, sheds and buildings. Few of us at the meeting realised that clematis are very good as cut flower for formal displays or just for informal displays at home. Varieties such as Our next meeting is on Wednesday 11 March “Piilu”, “Romantica” and “Odoriba” will last at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. Clematis are ground cover plants in their for up to two weeks in a vase. Varieties that Mr G Freeman will be talking about sweet natural environment and grow best when have small flowers are better suited as cut peas, a perennial favourite with many planted with other plants especially roses flowers on the whole. “Pixie” is a patio variety gardeners. Do come along as it is bound to and honeysuckle. It is important to keep that is evergreen with a citrus perfume while be a good evening. Visitors £2. colour combinations in mind when choosing “Dennys Double” is companion planting but at the end of the day another patio plant it comes down to personal taste. What pleases that flowers in one person may not be to the liking of others. May/June and Gardeners refer to this as the marmite effect. If August/ September roses are the companion and they are a variety and will put up with that flowers twice then the flowering season partial shade. When Earlier this month Conservative PPC for North Norfolk, Ann Steward can be extended considerably. Rosa “Bonica” the patio variety met with the Secretary of State for DEFRA, Rt. Hon. Elizabeth Truss MP, Cllr John Lee and Billy Gaff, Chairman of the North Norfolk a Fishermen’s Society. They discussed the proposal to designate part of the North Norfolk coastline as a marine conservation zone. DEFRA is SHTTO R AUG & & L I G H A L E A G E currently conducting a 12 week consultation process on this proposal.

Ann said “Tourism and fishing form the basis of North Norfolk’s strong local economy. I am very pleased to be able to help local fishing representatives put their concerns to the Secretary of State over the potential impact new conservation measures may have on their industry. Every year potters seasonally adjust their practices to ensure spawning crabs and lobsters are protected. I believe that the management of any conservation zone must involve the all stakeholders – particularly fishing communities; they have a wealth of knowledge to contribute and could play a vital role in sustainably managing the area.

I also recognise that nature conservation plays a vital role in Norfolk’s tourism industry, and we need a healthy environment abundant in wildlife to bring visitors to our coast. I am delighted that research shows marine wildlife is already thriving off the North Norfolk coast.

I want to find a way to ensure that fishing will continue alongside nature conservation measures; generations of fishing families must not be driven out of business. I was pleased that the Secretary of State listened to Billy Gaff’s concerns and that she will ensure that Billy Gaff, John Lee and I will meet DEFRA officials in London soon to discuss further our concerns.”

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER GROWING PLANTS FOR FLOWER ARRANGING

The first known flower arrangements date to 2500BCE in ancient Egypt. Egyptians regularly placed cut flowers in vases and highly stylized arrangements were used during burials, for processions, and simply as table decorations. Illustrations of arranged flowers have been found on Egyptian carved stone reliefs and painted wall decorations. The Greeks and the Romans also used flowers. The ancient Greeks used flowers and herbs for adornment. They did not often use vases, focusing instead on garlands and wreaths. The most popular foliage used by the Greeks and the Romans were acorns, oak leaves, laurel, ivy, bay and parsley. They also used flowers such as roses, hyacinths, honeysuckle, violets and lilies. The Chinese were making flower arrangements as far back as 207BCE to 220BCE, in the Han era of ancient China. Practitioners of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism placed cut flowers on their altars.

Flower arranging arrived in Europe around 1000 CE, and was particularly popular in

churches and monasteries where flowers and plants were also used for food and medicine as well as for decoration. Today flower arranging remains popular in the home, in the church and for all sorts of functions.

Buying flowers from florists is expensive but many plants can be grown in our gardens to provide material for cutting either by adapting existing borders or dedicating part of the garden to growing flowers for cutting.

Existing borders. When adapting existing borders, plant larger than usual groups of annuals, perennials and bulbs suited for cutting to allow for picking without affecting the overall appearance of the border. Do not forget to include a few well-chosen shrubs and grasses with interesting foliage. Use bulbs to extend the picking season.

The cutting garden. If space allows, dedicate a part of the garden to growing just cut flowers. The advantage of a cutting garden over picking from the borders is that it avoids reducing your garden display. Plant or sow in rows; this makes weeding, staking and picking much easier. Take the final spread of plants into account and allow access between the rows, otherwise plants will fall into each other, get tangled and can be damaged making them less suitable for harvesting.

Choosing the site. Cut flowers need a fertile, weed-free soil. Annual application of organic matter especially to sandy and clay soils help retain moisture and improve soil structure. In dry summers watering may be necessary to achieve good stem length. Moderate applications of a general fertiliser are often helpful and mulching with composted manure or bark suppresses weeds and retains moisture. Most cut flowers are sun-lovers, but a few will tolerate shade. Windy sites are best avoided otherwise robust staking will be needed.

Choosing plants. When deciding what to sow, or plant, make sure that they are suitable for your garden conditions and meet your intended purpose. Obviously if the flowers are needed for a particular event, choose varieties that will be at their best at that time of year. If you are planning to help with church decorations throughout the year plan for succession and make sure that you include plenty of foliage plants.

The TV presenter Sarah Raven has her own range of seeds especially for cutting and these might make a good starting point and give ideas on the wide variety of choices available. With careful choices and a little care you will be able to grow bunches of flowers to arrange at home, in church or for that special occasion. Bob Wilkinson

The nook appeal reaches £500,000 mark

Generous individuals, organisations, businesses and charitable trusts have rallied together to raise a staggering half a million pounds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) nook appeal.

As it stands, an impressive £500,769.51 has been raised for the appeal since it was launched 10 weeks ago in the presence of EACH Royal Patron HRH The Duchess of Cambridge at the Norfolk Showground.

Funds have been raised in all manner of ways and the Christmas period in particular generated considerable sums with retiring collections at carol services, donations in lieu of Christmas cards and street collections all adding to the total. The nook Foundation appeal, which encourages £10 donations, has also been incredibly successful.

The most significant donation to the nook appeal so far is a generous £150,000 donation from The Thompson Family Charitable Trust. The Thompson Family Charitable Trust has donated £300,000 to EACH with a request for £150,000 to be allocated towards the nook appeal and the remainder to fund our on-going service delivery.

The Thompson Family Charitable Trust have generously supported EACH since 1997 and have donated a total of £631,000 to the charity since their support began.

A spokesperson The Thompson Family Charitable Trust, said “The trust has supported EACH for many years and we’re delighted to be able to support EACH with a donation to the nook appeal to build a new hospice and to continue delivering care and support at the charity’s existing hospices.

Fundraising initiatives to appeal to as wide an audience as possible have been created including ‘the nook foundation appeal’ asking people to donate £10, ‘friends of the nook’ asking individuals to give £1,200 a year for three years and ‘the nook business network’ asking companies to commit to raising either £10,000, £15,000 or £25,000 over the duration of the appeal.

There’s also plenty of events happening in the next few months to get

Dick Whittington at Cromer Parish Hall on Saturday 31 January This was a dazzling evening that was well attended by an audience who were very appreciative and willing to participate.

There were excellent performances from Jonny Bell, Gary Dickenson, Abigail Clipsom, John Drury, John Hodgkinson, Andreas Yiasami, Roger Billings, Coral Bell and Bronwen Richmond along with others of the cast too numerous to mention, all performing with much professionalism and excellent voice delivery.

So good were the characterisations that I did not recognise one or two of the players. The characters Sherry Trifle and Sheik Onnit recalled some well-known comics of the past for talent and light comedy.

Unfortunately, the weather was very inclement that evening, but the performance was very well attended. The production was also matched by excellent duet singing and drum and percussion accompaniment by Mr Ray Loten.

Overall the four star production was very well mounted and the script both original and laden with puns, and very much surpassed my expectations. Jeremy Roughton

Local lifeboat, Lucy Lavers, returns to Dunkirk, 75 years on

Something special is happening this Spring – veteran lifeboat Lucy Lavers is returning to Dunkirk.

Her very first trip as a newly-built lifeboat in May 1940 was helping the evacuation of British and Allied troops stranded in Dunkirk, France. This Spring will be the first time she’s been back there since ‘Operation Dynamo’. The charity Rescue Wooden Boats is using a Heritage Lottery Grant to restore Lucy Lavers to her former glory in order to make this commemorative voyage. After years of neglect, by May 2015 she will look her magnificent best again.

In early May 2015 Lucy Lavers will leave Wells-next-the-Sea calling at Lowestoft, Aldeburgh, Levington, Harwich, Ramsgate, and finally crossing the Channel to Dunkirk. The aim is to tell

her story in each port and to encourage people, especially young people, to learn about the Dunkirk evacuation and maritime history. At each port, visitors can board Lucy Lavers, experience being on this 1940 lifeboat and feel the enormity of the events she took part in.

Lucy Lavers’ journey will involve a team of volunteer sailing crews, onshore coordinators, and a film crew, all working together along her route to France and back. There will be a programme of linked events onshore, including presentations and a volunteer-manned travelling exhibition. There is even the opportunity to share in this exciting voyage, by bidding for a place on board for some legs of the journey! Visit our eBay profile to bid www.ebay.co.uk/usr/ rescuewoodenboats

www.rescuewoodenboats.com, and your name will be written in a commemorative book that will accompany Lucy Lavers on her voyage. We encourage community participation – volunteers, fundraisers, educational organisations and local interest groups will be welcomed at each port of call. If you would like to be involved and become part of Lucy Lavers’ story, please contact Kate Faire, info@rescuewoodenboats.com.

After her return trip to Dunkirk, Lucy Lavers We are seeking will live in Wells-next-the-Sea and give support - the voyage educational trips to help people understand from Wells-next-theand experience our maritime heritage. Coupled with their other shop, offering Curtains, Net Curtains, Handbags, Wool, Toys and contemporary gifts in the Cromer Shopping Centre, it’s been a challenge, but has obviously paid off, with a great new look, and affordable products.

Cromer Gift Shop has been transformed and offers customers some fantastic gift ideas for all the family, with new lines arriving every week.

Jayne says “It’s been an amazing year, with everybody being so kind with their comments. We strive to offer something different to the ‘norm’ and are constantly sourcing new products, at a price that is affordable to all. We have managed to secure exclusivity with a number of suppliers, which will allow us to offer a unique shopping experience to all our customers”.

Cromer Gift Shop will continue to evolve, and can guarantee great service, prices and products, which is what we all look for. It’s well worth a visit!

Sheringham Woodfields School are go! Sheringham Woodfields School, a complex needs school educating 99 pupils, has finally reach its fundraising target of £40,000 to allow work to start on a brand new Sensory Room.

The final donation, £500, came courtesy of the Shipden Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners (No 717) and was presented to the school by Chris Wright, Worshipful Commander. During the weekly whole school assembly on 6 February, Chris explained to pupils and staff about the work carried out by the lodge in and around the local community, after which he presented the cheque to the school.

Work on the new Sensory Room to due to start during half term, with the new room ready by the middle of March 2015. Once complete, the new Sensory Room will allow for both individual and group work to be undertaken using state of the art equipment. Sensory Rooms help develop children’s senses using specialist lighting, music and objects whilst at the same time allow therapy to be undertaken with those children with limited communication, sight and mobility.

All pupils and staff wish to thank the Shipden Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners for their kind donation.

We opened our February meeting by welcoming five visitors and hope that they will decide to join us. We were then entertained by Roger Heath who told us of his life as a professional musician and singer. After tea, we had the rest of the meeting. Members who went to see Sister Act at the Theatre Royal and those who went to see the snowdrops at Walsingham all had a good time, although not all the snowdrops were in bloom. Names were taken for a trip to East Ruston Gardens in May and a visit to the Assembly Rooms in Norwich to see ‘A Time to Kill’ in June.

Our February speaker was Amanda Seales who makes beautiful fabric sculptures using Paverpol, a textile glue. As she talked to us, she created a ‘macquette’ or wire base and little by little the sculpted figure emerged, covered with the glue, which would then be dried and dressed with scraps of fabrics and lace.

Our regular walking group have a walk planned at the end of February in Southrepps and our Ten-pin bowlers meet monthly too. Our Craft Group meets on second Monday mornings (10am. Roughton Village Hall) and is a chance to finish off articles, start new ones and most importantly exchange ideas and skills.

In March we will welcome Hilary Cox to talk about Everest, and in April the theme is ‘Meditation for Health and Wellbeing’.

A ‘Swishing’ evening (second hand good quality clothing etc) will be held at the Village Hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday 15 April. Contact Maureen Wells 01263 768106.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Over 3,200 cats re-homed since the branch began is a lot of cats and, although we cannot remember them all, some leave a lasting impression of their stay with us. Two such cats arrived a few years ago; both were very scared when they joined us. They had not been treated for fleas and both had scabby coats as a consequence of a flea allergy. Their coats were dull and matted and they did not particularly enjoy being together. They also had no idea how to play despite being relatively young cats.

The first course of action was to take them to the vets to be checked, commence treatment to relieve their itchy skin and to get rid of all the fleas. In a very short time the cats were looking and feeling much better and starting to relax. With daily grooming their coats began to show signs of improvement too and after a few months both cats were put up for adoption and found loving new homes with people who realized they would probably need a little time to settle once again and who were prepared to give them that time. We had reports back from their new owners advising they had both settled in their new homes and we were delighted that things had worked out for both cats.

I recently had a call from the new owner of one of these cats resulting in me making a visit to her home to make a delivery, where I was able to renew my acquaintance with him. It was very satisfying to meet him again and to see what a difference a loving home makes. His new owner collected him from the bed, where he had been having a snooze, for me to see what a beautiful boy he is. He bounced into the room straight on to my lap to have a fuss and cuddle, from there to his owners lap to have his tummy tickled and once he had enough people attention, out into the hall to play chase with his toys. He now looks a picture of health, his lovely coat now shiny with no tangles and, from his demeanor, a very healthy and happy cat.

THE WHEATSHEAF GROWING FAST

Stephen and Daniela Moorby are the new owners of the Wheatsheaf at West Beckham. They took over the well established venue in December last and have already announced major plans for improving the facilities and offer at the Wheatsheaf. Both Stephen and Daniela have a long history in the hospitality sector in Dubai, where quality service is essential. Stephen has come from the AKT Group, which managed many major brands. Daniela is still in Dubai until the summer finishing her contract with the Anantara Dubai The Palm Resort & Spa. "We will be refurbishing the decoration and furnishings of the pub, " commented Stephen, "but we will be maintaining the country pub charm and appeal. 'Dogs and Muddy Boots' are not only allowed they are encouraged.

"We have already begun renovation of the Terrace and Beer Garden as well as the children’s play area so we will be ready for this summer. "Later in the year we will be adding a Tea room (Foodie Bouquets) and also converting the apartments above the pub into En-Suite Bed and Breakfast letting rooms. "The tea room will be used to serve the breakfasts to the residents, but will also be available for non-residents for breakfast." Stephen continued, "At the rear of the pub we will be building our own smoke house and curing and smoking our own meats, sausages and Parma style ham for use on the menu and for sale in our boutique deli operation." "I have been delighted by the response we have had so far to our new offering and I know we will be giving very good value, quality meals and accommodation in the future." North Norfolk law firm reaches 60 years and reclaims independence

Clapham & Collinge, one of Norfolk’s oldest and best respected law firms, has announced that it has left national legal network QualitySolicitors after four years. The move to re-establish itself as a completely independent firm coincides with Clapham & Collinge’s 60th anniversary and is being marked with a fresh new visual identity.

Clapham & Collinge has offices in Sheringham and Norwich and employs more than 50 people. The firm offers a wide range of services including conveyancing, family law, commercial and corporate matters and private client work. On Monday 9th February clients and staff arriving at the firm’s offices were greeted by an elegant plum and pistachio brand-mark which has replaced the bright pink QualitySolicitors logo.

Hugh Berridge is Senior Partner at Clapham & Collinge and has been with the firm for more than 35 years. “As a firm we have never been afraid of change, preferring to tackle challenges head on. Over the years we’ve adapted our services and approach to ensure we always offer what our clients need in a way that works best for them”, Hugh explains. “Becoming part of a large, national network was absolutely the right decision for us four years ago. At that time changes in legislation were making it incredibly hard for smaller law firms to compete against commodity legal providers such as the large supermarket chains. We were determined to put ourselves in the best possible position to retain our market share and grow as a business. There was a good fit between Clapham & Collinge and QualitySolicitors and we were able to learn from each other and create a customer-focused brand that is now well-known across the UK.”

“We have enjoyed, and benefited from, being part of QualitySolicitors but, after a great deal of deliberation, the Clapham & Collinge partners decided that the time was right to start

re-focusing on our own brand”, continues Hugh Berridge. “We have always been incredibly proud to be a Norfolk firm and, as we develop the business, the county is where our commitment lies.”

Clapham & Collinge will continue to deliver the same comprehensive range of legal services to their clients. Tammy Parnell is the Managing Partner of Clapham & Collinge. “Our mission as a business is very simple; every day we strive to be the very best law firm for people in Norfolk”, she explains. “From buying a first home to handling a painful divorce, supporting a local business with a management buy-out or dealing with a complicated trust, we will fight tooth and nail for our clients. As a team we understand Norfolk and the things that make it special and different from other parts of the UK”.

“Respect is critical to the way we work as a firm”, adds Tammy Parnell. “We always try to make our clients feel relaxed when they come to see us; we are professional but avoid being stuffy or intimidating. Our aim is to build relationships with clients so that they think of Clapham & Collinge as their law firm; a team that is there whenever they need us.”

initiatives. As well as supporting charities such as Break, Will-Aid and the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, the firm develops and promotes its own events such as regular free advice coffee mornings, dementia awareness events and training sessions.

“We are extremely excited about our future as an independent local firm. Whilst our existing clients won’t notice any changes to the excellent service we provide, we hope that people who don’t already know us will be tempted to find out more about how we can help them. The move away from being part of a national network means that we can revert to making business decisions that are entirely focused on the needs of our business, our clients and our community”, concludes Hugh Berridge.

Clapham & Collinge can offer free initial consultations and the firm is, in many cases, able to provide a ‘flat fee’ quote at the outset. This means clients know what bill to expect and can phone their solicitor for an update without worrying that a surprise invoice will follow.

Music from the north!

On Friday 13 February, the capacity audience at the Copeman Centre in Briston were yet again superbly entertained by one of the UK's top organists, Brett Wales.

Using his Wersi Louvre digital organ (you could buy two good cars for less than the price of this one!) he delighted us all with a very varied and song-packed two hour performance, including Nancy Sinatra's 'These Boots Were Made For Walking', the Strauss favourite 'Roses From The South' - which sounded just like a huge concert orchestra - the Shadow's 'Apache', a very bouncy Rock and Roll medley, and Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. The evening concluded with a very fast 'Hillbilly'

medley, which had everyone's toes tapping furiously, and was followed by the loudest round of applause you could possibly imagine!

The next show will be on Friday 27 March, when Mark Thompson will travel the 232 miles from his home near Durham to play for us. He is a great favourite with our audiences, and again he plays all sorts of music, so there is definitely something for everyone! Not only is he a great musician, but he has a lovely gentle Northern humour too. If you like the greatest live music, played on the best digital instruments, you must get your tickets booked soon. They are just £6 each if booked in advance - and the best news is that under 16s

get in ABSOLUTELY FREE as long as they are accompanied by a ticket-paying adult, and we are pleased to say that we do now seem to be getting more younger music lovers coming along and enjoying our kind of music. The number to call is 01263 860844.

As usual, the show starts at 7.30pm, with doors open at 7pm. The Copeman Centre is in Hall Street, Briston - NR24 2LG - and is warm, has comfortable padded seats, and wide level entrance that makes it ideal for disabled visitors - and there's loads of free parking right outside! There is always a good Raffle and refreshments too, and the proceeds from these is donated to the Copeman Centre's funds, so everyone is a winner.

Parking Fees

North Norfolk District Council raised nearly £4,000 in car park fees during its 'free' parking weekend before Christmas, prompting further concerns about how the council dealt with promotion of the scheme.

Kards & Bits

The figure totaling £3,603.20 was revealed in a Freedom of Information request from the North Norfolk Labour Party, who earlier this month complained too many visitors to North Norfolk car parks were still paying on 21/22 December 2014.

Users of social media complained over the weekend that customers were still paying in car parks in Sheringham, Cromer, Holt, and North Walsham. David Spencer The North Norfolk Labour Party believes more needs to be done on free parking days to ensure visitors to our towns are aware of the scheme and staying to shop in our towns.

David Spencer, North Norfolk Labour Party's spokesperson for North Walsham, said: "North Norfolk District Council needs to rethink their car parking strategy, this only rubs salt into the wounds for North Walsham where they are proposing to charge for free car parks.

It brings a mockery to these free parking days when nearly £4,000 was raised in revenue. I thought the point of these days was to bring more trade to our town centres, but in North Walsham there was plenty of confusion, and we did not reep the full benefits.

The District Council claims they could not afford to do more to stop visitors paying, but I am sure that there would be a number of willing volunteers in each town who could cover up the parking machines for those weekends."

Councils working together to find a suitable outcome

North Norfolk District Council is continuing to work closely with North Walsham Town Council to help find it suitable alternative accommodation in light of the proposed £1.6m investment from JD Wetherspoon.

Following a report to the Council’s Cabinet in November 2014, a working group has been established with representatives from both the District and the Town Council. The group has worked together constructively and positively to identify the accommodation requirements of the Town Council.

In addition to the support being given to find alternative premises, North Norfolk District Council has committed one-off funding of up to £20,000 to the Town Council to help meet any costs which may be incurred as a result of the relocation.

A decision regarding the future use of the funds from a sale of the New Road building will be a matter for the next Council. In the meantime, the Council welcomes ideas and project proposals for regeneration in North Walsham (and other areas of the District) which would require capital investment.

Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “North Norfolk District Council and North Walsham Town Council are working together for the benefit of the people of North Walsham and the wider district.

We collectively recognise the vote of confidence which comes from a national chain seeking to invest in the town, and for this reason we are committed to bringing a Wetherspoon offer to North Walsham together with the jobs and investment which will result.

Discussions to find a new home and to help fund the Town Council’s relocation have been productive and I am confident that, together, we will reach a suitable outcome for all concerned.”

North Walsham Town Mayor, Richard Sims, added “We are surprised that there are suggestions of some kind of stalemate between the District Council and the Town Council concerning the sale of the District Council offices to Wetherspoons.

“Our on-going talks continue to be positive and together with the district council’s offer of funding to help the relocation and its commitment to help us find suitable alternative accommodation, I am confident of a positive outcome in the near future.”
