Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

New Guide Dogs group for Sheringham, Cromer and the surrounding district

Guide Dogs is appealing for people who live in the North Norfolk area to volunteer for a newly formed group that will plan and support fundraising activities.

You can join a growing number of people in your local area who are volunteering to help this National, well loved Charity by giving just ONE HOUR of your time. You will be making a real difference by helping Guide Dogs transform the lives of blind people by enabling them to live a full and independent life.

When you become a member of the team you will have the chance to plan and help out at local events which will include such activities as social evenings, quiz nights, collections, and selling Guide Dogs merchandise. Guide Dogs receives no government support and is funded purely by those who are willing to give time and help to this valuable cause.

The Charity plans to hold a coffee morning in the area soon so that everyone interested can meet to shape the group’s future but in the meantime If you would like to know more about the new support group please contact Daniel at Guide Dogs on 0118 983 8741 or you can email him on daniel.ingram@guidedogs.org.uk.

Fair Necessities Appeal

As you may know, we sent £247 to the Traidcraft's ‘Fair Necessities’ Appeal after Barbara's Big Birthday Brew.

During this Coffee Morning, and between January and the end of March, 25 more Fairtrade stalls have been held in North Norfolk. The profits from these stalls, plus donations amounted to £400, which has also been sent to the ‘Fair Necessities’ Appeal.

All donations received by 3 April will be doubled by the UK, so more smallholder farmers in developing countries will be helped by Traidcraft projects to improve their yields and invest in new projects.

North Lodge Park

"Have your say" on North Lodge Park Results so far show a real passion for North Lodge Park

Half-way through the survey of Cromer residents, a picture is beginning to emerge of what people would like to see in North Lodge Park.

While the age profile of the respondents reflects that of the area, with more responses from people over 40, the Friends would like to see a greater response from younger people.

The survey of Cromer residents and visitors, launched on 4 March, closes on 20 April.

Over 400 responses have already been received, but with under three weeks until the closing date, the Friends of North Lodge Park are urging everyone in Cromer to “have their say” on the future of North Lodge Park.

particularly their ‘strongest wishes’ for the park, are particularly useful, and will be taken into account in our report and recommendations to the Town Council.”

The most supported areas for improvement are the café, children's play area, better planting, and putting. The former tennis courts/tarmac area is an improvement priority. Dedicated areas, special events and activities have also received a positive response from the majority of respondents.

“The questionnaire is very much a starting point in improving North Lodge Park, an opportunity to collect ideas to help come up with a plan to discuss with the Town Council,” says Tony Knight.

"As well as the interest in the survey, there has been a lot of discussion on social media which is keeping us busy" said Barry Meadows, Secretary of the Friends.

“The large majority of respondents so far would like to see ‘some change’ in the park, with very strong support for better maintenance and improved facilities,” says Friends chairman Tony Knight.

“The Friends’ role is to represent these views of the community", Barry continued, "to be able to say ‘people want this’ or ‘don’t want that’ on their behalf. So if you have “One clear message is it should be any views at all, on North Lodge A ship-themed play area which has generated hundreds a community park, with a real desire Park, please take part in this survey.” of likes and comments on social media to see investment to make it into a The North Lodge Park questionnaire “But the same messages seem to be coming beautiful peaceful cliff top park, an attractive can be completed online at from all age groups” adds Tony. place to visit with things to do, things to see – northlodgepark.org.uk - paper copies are a place to sit and enjoy the surroundings.” available from Budgens in Cromer. “The comments people are making,

Sheringham and Cromer Branch of the RAF Association

2014 had been successful in that the Branch achieved a total income for the year reaching £7,615. This income was over £1,000 in excess of 2013 despite having fewer collectors this year, and appreciation is acknowledged of the generous public support of the RAF fund, which does so much to help disadvantaged ex-serving RAF personnel.

This success was reported at the Branch’s AGM held this year at the Morley Club, Sheringham on 17 March.

President’s Cup was this year to be shared by two members - Christine Martin (Secretary) and Shirley Warden, both of whom had made outstanding contributions to the Branch.

A cheque was also presented to the cadets of No 1895 (Cromer) Squadron of the ATC in recognition for their support of the Branch during the year.

The 2015 committee was elected – the new members being Air Commodore Jack Broughton ( Secretary) and John Lawford (Treasurer).

The President, Air Commodore Tom Benson, The Branch RAF Liaison Officer (Steve welcomed those attending, in particular The presentation by the Chairman of a cheque to Flt Roberts) gave a resume of the operations Warrant Officer Steve Roberts, Branch RAF LT.Brian Keerie RAFVR in recognition of the support flown by the squadrons based at Marham and Liaison Officer from RAF Marham, and given by the No 1895 (Cromer) Squadron ATC during of the planned work services to be carried Flight Lieutenant Brian Keerie of the Cromer 2014 out prior to the arrival of No 617 Lightning ATC Squadron. Gresham’s musician achieves highest mark in Norfolk for music exam

Sam Aldersey-Williams, a music scholar at Gresham’s School and a student member of the Royal College of Organists (RCO) has been awarded the prestigious Saxton Noble Memorial prize for gaining the highest mark in Norfolk in his grade 7 music exams on the organ.

Sam, from Aylsham, has been playing the organ for over three years under the tutorship of Lawrence Tao, Head of Academic Music at Gresham’s, and has already gained an extensive amount of experience on the organ. He regularly plays at the school’s chapel and church services around North Norfolk and through courses hosted by the Royal College of Organists. Last year, Sam and fellow Gresham's pupil, George Jefford attended the RCO Organ Scholar Experience at Sam playing the organ Trinity College, Cambridge at Gresham’s School and played on organs at several of the colleges there, as well as participating in choral evensong. Sam has also benefited from playing on a wide range of organs across the country from St. Paul's Cathedral, London, St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St. Edmunds and Norwich Cathedral and plans to play on the organ at Wells Cathedral this Easter.

As well as playing the organ, Sam is working towards his Performance Diploma on piano and will be playing the first movement of the Grieg piano concerto at the Minster Church of St Nicholas in Great Yarmouth in June. He also enjoys jazz piano, plays trombone in the School brass ensemble and jazz group and studies singing.

The 15 year old pupil is currently pursuing his interest in composition too. He recently premiered a song he had written called, On the Grasshopper and Cricket, a setting of the sonnet by John Keats, Cromer Times 467 April 11th 2015

at a Music and Munch concert at Gresham’s Auden Theatre.

Next term this musically talented pupil will take his GCSE music exam a year early and plans to take his Grade 8 organ exam later this summer.

Groveland Farm Shop, Restaurant & Garden Centre

Over the winter months the team at Groveland have been busy updating and refurbishing both the kitchen and garden centre, ready for the spring. Due to increased demand in the busy restaurant, the kitchen has benefited from a re-fit allowing them to develop the range of pies, pasties, quiches and other delicacies they provide for the deli counter as well as managing the busy theme nights each month.

12

Meanwhile the new look Garden Centre has been re-stocked with a large range of seeds, shrubs, bedding plants, herbaceous plants, trees and gardening tools. You’ll also find a wide range of food and accessories for your pets and wild birds. Darren, the new garden centre manager, will be in store five days a week and will be happy to offer tips and advice to help your garden flourish. Darren developed his love of gardening from the age of 6 when he regularly helped his grandfather in the family garden, and eventually went on to study horticulture at college. After many years working in the horticulture business we are delighted that Darren has decided to join the

Groveland team and look forward to watching the garden centre grow and flourish.

We provide top quality local produce, a well stocked deli and a healthy living section packed with environmentally friendly and allergy related products, all in a rustic, welcoming and friendly environment. If you haven’t visited recently why not pop along and say hello to the team - you’re assured of a warm and friendly welcome.

Construction work on Cromer's new custom designed skate park has begun

On a grey and misty Tuesday 17 March, the historic first turf was cut by Maverick, the specialist skate park development company that won the tender to build the skate park.

Chair of the Cromer Skate Park committee Hillel Fridman was in attendance, along with a number of the campaign's younger supporters.

The Cromer Skate Park campaign reached its fundraising target of £150,000 in September last year. Unfortunately, the building work had to be put on hold until after the winter. Now that construction has begun, although progress is still dependent upon prevailing weather conditions, Maverick is confident that the work

Running for Break

will be completed by June of this year. Cromer will therefore have its own skate park up and running in good time for the start of the summer season.

Nor has the campaign flagged in its commitment to raising funds to support the new skate park once it is fully operational. The Cromer Skate Park Charity Ball was hosted, once again, at Northrepps Cottage Country Hotel, on the evening of S aturday 14 March. The occasion proved even more popular than last year's inaugural event, with 76 guests in attendance, including Cromer's Deputy Mayor Tim Adams.

A few years ago I lost over 4 stone in weight with the amazing help and support from the North Waltham Slimming World Group and Karen Mason the local Consultant, writes Cathy from the Victorian Tearooms (a far cry and state from my youthful days when I used to compete in cross country and middle distance athletics for the County). Having lost the weight I knew I needed a good way to keep it off so I jumped at the opportunity to run the London Marathon for Break. It’s one thing being slim, but much better to be fit. This joint venture with Break Charity - changing Young Lives, meant that I could get really fit (again) but with an AMAZING goal at the end. That is to raise a huge amount of money that will benefit young people who have not had such a great start in life or received the support they so justifiably needed. That which I have had and been able to offer my children. Although I run a Tea Rooms now, I used to work as a CBT Psychotherapist. There I obviously came across many emotionally damaged people. You may well see me in my bright pink or orange top running around the roads and fields from Cromer to Weybourne, Felbrigg, The Runtons, Sheringham. The views and scenes I see on my runs are just staggering. I really love the North Norfolk Coast. Mind you, I have yet to work out the mystery of how a cow in the next field can seem adorable, cute, cuddly even. But in the same field the same cow can look fierce, threatening and most definitely carnivorous! I have altered my route a number of times when I have suddenly come across a field of cows. I become chicken! If you see me give me a toot on your horn, and I’ll add another £1 to the fundraising. Or please pop into the Victorian Tea Rooms on Meadow Road, Cromer and sponsor me or buy a raffle ticket to win a Full Afternoon Tea for Two. Then sit back on Sunday April 26th, relax and look out for me on the TV and wait for a wave from me! There are 6 of us running for Break and I am raising £2,000. Break Charity uses your donations to provide professional and volunteer support for family members, a therapeutic support programme for children, a separated parents information programme, drop in groups for parents, school holiday activities, a young carers service, group conferencing for families and so much more…

Also Phil Weston of 'Wet Dog' is raffling off a bespoke specialist skateboard worth a staggering £266.50. To see the skateboard and to buy a ticket in the raffle, please visit 'Wet Dog' surf shop on Tucker Street.

As always, the campaign thanks all those individuals and organisations who have supported and who continue to support the campaign.

Your input is always welcome. Please contact the committee via any of the following: Website: www.cromerskatepark.co.uk FaceBook: Cromer Skate Park Twitter: @CromerSkatepark Telephone: 07775 830 907

Each year sees Cromer and Sheringham eateries offering great seafood dishes, and both towns are arrayed with a quirky series of uniquely decorated objects which have been generously sponsored by local businesses. So look out for some Wheely Wonderful Ships Wheels this year... there are 101 wheels to spot!

At nearly a meter in circumference these solid wooden wheels have been a real challenge for the wheel decorators, and there certainly seems to be no lack of creativity in North Norfolk! Hundreds of people have been working away for many weeks - including professional artists, enthusiasts, families, friends and staff as well as groups such as Cromer Academy, Cromer guides, Sheringham brownies, Colby School, Woodfields School, Cromer Junior School and Sheringham Primary School - and all the Wonderful Wheels will be on display by

Good Friday.

Wheels are clustered in the Cromer and Sheringham area, but some have rolled as far as Woodfordes brewery at Woodbastwick. All the places displaying a wheel hope you will also pop in and browse, there are gift and craft shops, cafes and pubs, churches, charity shops, putting greens, book sellers, estate agents, galleries, boutiques, museums, restaurants and many interesting places to visit on the trail.

Trail leaflets are available from Tourist Information centres and from various points around the towns and nearby villages. You could win a meal for two, or tickets to the fabulous Summer Pier Show by voting online for your favourite wheel at www.crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk.

Remember to come back for our Grand Charity Auction on 30 August - you could bag yourself a Wonderful Wheel to take home - and all monies raised go to help local good causes.

The Food Trail includes 30 very different eateries and 30 fun True or False seafood facts. Cafes, chippies, tea rooms, restaurants, Ah, you, Snowdrop, who with green bullet head pubs, hotels and crab Have forced your way through cold brown winter earth, shops are all aiming

Stepping Stones Pre-School Open Day

Stepping Stones Pre-School, based in a refurbished wing of Aldborough Primary School will be holding an Open Day on Saturday 25 April from 10am until 12noon. There will be fun activities for children and an opportunity to look around the Pre-School and the School. There will also be an opportunity to chat with current parents and staff at Stepping Stones. Everyone is welcome to drop in, so if you have a child or grandchild who is between 2.5-5 years, or would just like to find out more, we would love to see you!

During their sessions, children at Stepping Stones have access to our enclosed outside area at all times of the day, where they can enjoy the sand, water, mud kitchen or make a spaceship out of milk crates. We also go to our lovely garden to ride on the bikes, play on the climbing frame and check on our raised beds and wildlife area.

Inside, the children may find a treasure island in the sand tray, strawberry scented playdough and a post office in the role-play area. For the creative, there is everything from paint and junk modelling to dressing-up and musical instruments.

Children aged 3 years and over are entitled to government funding and can access up to 5 free sessions per week.

For further information about the Open Day or about Stepping Stones Pre-School please contact us on 01263 768766 or visit www.steppingstonesaldborough.co.uk

to offer a taste of seafood.... often freshly caught that morning! Combining the two trails is a great way to explore our towns and the local area, to find out more about our seafood, and to discover some of the very special flavour, which this part of North Norfolk has to offer.

And succeeding, celebrate with bright, white joy.

We who have seen only the cold and brown winter, Smile with joy and hope. You, dear Snowdrop, bring dreams Of summer days and butterflies and singing birds.

Like a peaceful army marching you drive out Cold and grey, and leave a white carpet of spring Swaying in the wind, and blooming in our hearts.

Council seeking views for site of proposed community sports pitch facility

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is seeking views regarding four sites it has identified as a potential home for a proposed community outdoor sports facility in Cromer. The Council recognises that Cromer currently has a lack of outdoor sports pitch facilities and is seeking to explore the potential for a number of sport clubs in the area to share facilities including pitches, clubhouse and changing rooms. In the long-term, better equipped and more modern facilities would give local clubs the ability to expand and encourage greater participation in sport. To provide such a facility, the Council has identified four areas of land which are well related to the town and have the potential for development. The consultation exercise will enable NNDC to reduce this to one or two of the sites which will then be the subject of detailed investigation in terms of possible development costs. Proceeds of any sale of the Cabbell Park site, the current home of Cromer Town and Cromer Youth Football Club, will be committed towards the provision of the new facility. The initial appraisal of the four sites has been completed against a number of criteria including landscape impact, ground levels, relationship with adjoining land uses and accessibility. Comments can be submitted: • Online via the Council’s website • In writing to the Planning Policy Team, North Norfolk District Council, Holt Road, Cromer NR27 9EN. • By email to planningpolicy@north-norfolk.gov.uk. The closing date for comments is Friday 17 April 2015. Following the consultation, and consideration of the responses, a report will be prepared for discussion at a future meeting of the Council’s Cabinet.

Cromer hosts 500-strong St Georges Day Parade

This year 1st Rural (Roughton Mill) Scout Group are the hosts for the St George’s Day Parade and Church Service and because their catchment area goes far beyond the village of Roughton, the most central venue to encompass all the surrounding villages is naturally seen as Cromer.

Therefore, with the approval of North Norfolk District Council, on 19 April Civic Dignitaries, parents, friends and supporters of 500 Scout members aged from 6 years onwards - Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Adult Leaders and Supporters - will assemble in the Cadogan Road car park at 2pm ready to begin their Parade.

The Parade will be led by the 901 Troop Marine Cadets, Band and Drum Corps from Winterton, and, under the careful watch of Scouts Parade Marshall, Roger Smith (Group Scout Leader from North Walsham), the Parade will proceed along Hamilton Road to Church Street where the Flag Bearers will form a Guard of Honour either side of the entrance door of Cromer Parish Church, where the St George’s Day Church Service will begin at 3pm and will include the renewal of Scout Promises by all members.

A short business meeting followed with invitations to forthcoming events for members who wished to attend. This included the treasurer’s report, which gave details of the charities we had agreed to support during 2014/2015 and the amounts that had been sent to each. Our guest speaker was Mrs Yvonne Easton, the Inner Wheel District Chair who had travelled from Lowestoft to give us a very interesting talk, with a lot of laughter. She spoke about how she became a member of Inner Wheel only five years ago, shortly after the loss of her husband of nearly 60 years. Many tales she told of her working life and the charities she obviously still enjoyed working with especially Age UK and a Canine Dog Group. Members showed their appreciation with a small gift of a Poppyland plate and admiration for all the meetings she had travelled to speak to around the East Anglia District. If anyone is interested in joining the Ladies of Inner Wheel please ring Mrs Carol Selwyn on 01263 513717. We meet at The Virginia Court Hotel in Cromer on the 1st Thursday of the month at 6pm.

Our meeting in March was a busy one, starting with David Frost’s talk about the ‘The Felbrigg Squires’. It was interesting to hear that the unusual name ‘Felbrigg’ originates from Anglo Saxon times and means a wooden bridge or plank. David gave us detailed information about the Windham family and how the house, surrounding buildings and estate have evolved over the years, to what we see today. On his death in 1969, Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer bequeathed Felbrigg Hall to the National Trust, with the provision that it should remain intact and as such it remains a family home.

Following on with the Felbrigg theme, our walk on 14 April will be round the Hall’s grounds with the usual break for refreshments. The walk will start at 10.30am from the Sustead car park, located on the edge of the estate.

Following refreshments, details of our coach trip to Walsingham in May were finalised, information was provided about Stody Lodge Gardens, ACWW Walk at Blickling Hall, October’s Celebrity lunch at Northrepps and a date was agreed for the Centenary Tea Party we are organising for September.

At our April meeting, Sharon Willmot will talk about ‘Food Banks’. We welcome visitors and prospective new members (you do not have to be an Overstrand resident to join us) to our walks and monthly meetings. Our meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand.

A Chaplain at Cromer? I thought I saw one …

Well, maybe it was me! I am Janet Stewart, part time Chaplain at NNUH and Cromer Hospital. I usually come in on a Friday morning but days can be variable and staff can contact me if needed. The Dialysis Unit is a special port of call and patients are always a privilege to meet.

The canteen is another special place – with opportunities to talk and perhaps be an encouragement to others through difficult times.

One initial query was ‘Why do you wear a green shirt?’ Answer ‘Because I haven’t ironed the blue one!’ But that question and others sometimes show a desire to share. Waiting on one’s own can be lonely and talking about anything, whether pets, NCFC or God, are all equally important.

So maybe I will see you around, look out for the clerical collar and the coloured shirt! Rev Janet Stewart

Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

A farmer’s daughter from Carmarthenshire, West Wales, dubbed the “Cowshed Cinderellaâ€?, has won ÂŁ1,300,000 from her parents for her 30 years of work and the loss of her young days of freedom.

The High Court in Cardiff was told that Eirian Davies, 45, missed out going to dances to look after the cows on the family dairy farm while her sisters partied. Hard-working Eirian was assured by her parents Tegwyn and Mary that “you will have the damn lot one day. Eirian gave her life to the farm in the belief that her patience and hard work would be rewarded and that she would take over the thriving farm and its pedigree milking herd when her parents retired.

Until she reached 21 she worked for nothing. After that she often received as little as ÂŁ15 a day for milking the cows. If she complained about her treatment, her father told her “not

to kill the goose that lays the golden egg.

Both her sisters Enfys and Eleri left home to pursue other careers and for the past 20 years Eirian was alone on the farm with her parents. Eirian was shown a copy of a Will in 2009 which left nearly all the farm to her. Relations with her parents deteriorated when she formed male friendships. A family fight broke out and the parents began proceedings to evict Eirian. Eirian launched a legal battle for her ‘rightful share’. The Appeal Court found that she had relied to her detriment on her parents’ promises and thrown herself into working on the farm. She was thus entitled to a “beneficial interest in the business in order to reflect her “suffering and the promises made to her.

It was ruled that the farm was worth about ÂŁ3,800,000 and that an “appropriate awardâ€? for Eirian would be ÂŁ1,300,000 for her to start a farm of her own.

Weather from Ned Nimbus

Up until a week before Christmas, the weather was on the mild side but thereafter, and until the end of March, temperatures were below average, often with an added wind chill. The forecast was for such conditions, allied with high pressure never being too far away, which meant most low pressures systems were weakened off or steered away from us. This is exactly what happened with the stormy spell I had forecast for early/mid March, which meant only north-western areas caught a lively spell of weather, which was widespread in the north Atlantic.

Since 2010 our winters and springs have been on the cold side or very

Aspiring young cyclist is given support by council

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is supporting a local talented 16-year old to help reach her goal of becoming a professional cyclist.

Circuit, 25 Mile and Hill Climb Champion.

16-year old, Isla Rush, competes in Track, Road and Time Trials cycling. She already has an impressive portfolio of accolades under her belt and is currently ranked 10th in the country of her age group (Youth A girls). NNDC and Place for People are supporting Isla’s training by giving her free use of the gym and pool at Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre.

Tom FitzPatrick, Leader for North Norfolk District Council said “The council is committed to showing strong support for athletes in the local community to help them reach their potential. I have been active in sport as a competitor, coach and official and believe it is an ideal way for young people to make the most of their abilities.

Left to right: Tom FitzPatrick, Leader for North Norfolk District Council, Isla Rush and Glyn Williams, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services.

Isla’s accolades have included representing the Eastern Region twice at the UK School Games (Road inter-regionals 2013, Track inter-regionals 2014), as well as cycling for the Eastern Region at Road inter-regionals. She also holds titles of being the 2013 U14 Girls National

Gold Medalist at national level

Seventeen year old Emily Bowyer of Cromer was a crew member of the Norwich Rowing Club (NRC) quad which won a gold medal on 17 March at the National Junior Scullery competition held at Eton Dorney (venue of the 2012 London Olympics Rowing Competition). This was no mean feat as they beat the top 17 year old talents from all over GB.

Emily only learnt to row just under a year ago and she has taken to the sport like a duck to water!

Emily, who trains eight sessions a week with the NRC at Trowse is under the tutorlage of Katy Knowles, a GB coach, on a England

Glyn Williams, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services added “The Olympics in 2012 provided a wonderful opportunity to boost aspiring athletes and for everyone to participate in sport across the country. It is important we champion local future stars such as Isla and help in any way we can to support her aspirations to become a top level cyclist.”

Isla said “I really want to thank the council and Place for People for allowing me free access to train at Splash. My training is invaluable to my performance. I started off doing triathlons and competitive swimming before I started cycling, I currently ride for a team called WyndyMilla. My goal at the moment is to race in Belgium in the Spring. In the future I would love to be a professional cyclist living in Europe and racing for a pro continental team.”

Talent Pathway Programme.

Emily has not restricted her sporting success to just rowing in the last year as, for many years, she was a swimmer of some note, reaching National level qualification, and as a member of the North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club, Emily recently retained her Norfolk County 200 metre backstroke title in early March. So sport is in her blood!

Emily's younger sister Molly has also taken up rowing recently so there may be more success to come.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club

01263 711593 07880 658866

Part of North Norfolk Community Transport

Hello and welcome to a new season at the Cromer Marrams Bowls Club. Following a Special General Meeting of the club held in November the club is delighted to tell all prospective members, that the Full Membership Fee for 2015 is to be reduced to £50. Social Membership remains at £10. This is a ‘thank you’ for support to existing members and in addition an opportunity to encourage new members to join. The slogan must be “Pay £50 and play whenever you like, for as long as you like. No additional rink fees for roll ups, league games or friendly games.” The only extra you will be asked to pay is a small amount of £1 if you play in friendly matches to cover tea and biscuits! The club will be opening this year on the weekend Saturday/Sunday 18/19 April. The Treasurer and other committee members will be at the clubhouse on those first two days between 10am and 1pm ready to collect subscriptions. Cheque or cash welcome. Competition forms will also be available. The seasons runs through until 30 September. As usual it was necessary to carry out the annual club clean up when we sorted out the clubhouse after the winter and got the green ready for play prior to the season. Club members were at the green last Tuesday 7 April 9.30am onwards and all help was greatly appreciated. Thank you. A pre-season coffee morning has been reinstated to the program and this will be held on Saturday 11 April from 10am. All members and prospective members who I hope have received this publication in time, are invited to come along, share stories, bring along clothes for and select clothes from the sale rack, check out the homemade cakes, consider the book stall and there may even be a bring and buy stall. I am sure that

if anyone wants to pay their membership fees on that morning the Treasurer will be happy to receive them! Club President Keith Pantling is looking forward to a successful playing season, although there may be a slight reduction in the number of friendly matches. It seems that club memberships in general are getting older and less players seem to want to travel. However, I am sure Keith in his other role as Club and Friendlies Captain will be well supported in all the games that have been planned. Our Hansells League Wednesday night Captain this season is John Blackburn ably supported by ViceCaptain Bob Allard. We shall only be running one team in the Federation County League this season and Neil Carswell is the ‘Crabs’ Captain. That team will have to travel somewhat further on Tuesday nights as due to reorganisation by the County Association the club now finds itself in the County Premier league (West). Roger Purser continues with his role as Captain of the NANSA League team after two very successful seasons and we wish that success continues. The club contractors, Willimotts, have been excellent over the winter period and have been working hard on the green and it is looking in very good condition. Over the winter the clubhouse has been open on Friday evenings and there have been a number of quiz nights, occasionally curtailed by the weather. These have been run by John Blackburn, Edna Bunkle, Jack Purvis and we said welcome back to Frank Thwaites. The short short mat bowls on Wednesday afternoon has been very well supported and a great competitive spirit has developed amongst the various contestants. You are all reminded that the clubhouse and bar will continue to be open on Friday evenings, for a roll up if you wish to hone your skills together with a social get together in the clubhouse at very reasonable prices. Everyone welcome. Peter Bird 01263 512120
