Issue 468 25th April 2015
New Search and Rescue service training for both Cromer Lifeboats
Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent
The new SAR helicopter base at Humberside is now operational and ready to support any RNLI station when requested. Cromer RNLI assisted as part of an exercise last month.
After many years of service, the yellow Sea Kings of the RAF Search and Rescue service will retire and cease assisting Cromer RNLI’s lifeboats. They will be replaced by the helicopters of HM Coastguard.
On Sunday 29 March Cromer had a visit from the new Humberside based aircraft. This gave both the Cromer all weather and inshore lifeboats an opportunity to exercise with them.
New Puzzle Page & Competition inside this issue
All the team on Cromer’s Lifeboats would like to express their thanks to 22 and 202 squadrons for their work over the years. We look forward to working with the new team.

The charity chosen by Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club this year is the East Anglian Air Ambulance and, at the last meeting, the Club was able to present the organisation with a cheque for £900.
Receiving the cheque, Jamie Edghill, the EAAA fund-raising coordinator for North Norfolk, told the meeting that each life-saving flight cost around £2,600. Over the last few years, demands on the service have increased steadily.
Public support as recently enabled the purchase of an additional helicopter and recruiting Prince William has also raised the EAAA’s profile further, he said.

SOME THINGS WERE MADE FOR EACH OTHER«
This annual group exhibition gives visitors an overview of up to 70 individual artists’ work in one place before the start of the main event on 23 May. Details of all participating artists and the location of their studios can be found in the Open Studios brochure which will be freely available before and during the exhibition or online at www.nnopenstudios.org.uk. The exhibiton will be open every day from 10am until 5pm except on Sundays and artists will be on hand to greet and talk to visitors. Demonstrations by working artists are planned on the two Saturdays. Guided tours can be arranged and parties are very welcome.
The fabulous light and airy exhibition space at The Atrium has become the regular host for this preview event featuring ceramics, glass, jewellery, sculpture and textiles in addition to framed artwork by local artists.
This year we hope you will notice posters featuring one of Phil Arthur’s distinctive jugs. Phil, who is based in Buxton, makes terracotta slip-decorated bird jugs with influences from both 17th century English slipware and pre-Colombian pottery animals. We have decided to use his ‘Puffin’ to help lead visitors across North Walsham to The Atrium. Follow the Puffin!

REVIEW - CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS
DUNCAN HONEYBOURNE - PIANO - Templewood, Northrepps The majestic energy of Franz Liszt’s Sonnetto 104 del Petrarca - being the first item on the programme - engulfed the Music Room at Templewood with such power that I understand why it is said that Liszt could destroy the piano more easily with his fingers alone! Thankfully, the modern instruments are made to withstand this almost aggressive style, of which I am sure Liszt would have approved. Robert Schumann’s Widmung, transcribed by Liszt as a present to Clara WieckSchumann’s wife - the transcription being in true Liszt style, powerful, articulate, with some beautiful melodic passages, played with a deep cantabile touch enhanced by well-judged rubato phrasing. Ballade, and Sonata in C sharp minor by local composer Geoff CummingsKnight, was impressive in the lyrical and romantic textures - the Sonata consisting of 21 fragments broke away from the normal sonata form - and without any melodic line, was explorative in content, requiring much skill and technical expertise which were well within Honeybourne’s ability as he coped with the many diverse demands. This composition called for the audience to envisage their own effect and opinion regarding the musical pictures of which this piece had many. Stalham River (Ballade for Piano) by Ernest John Moeran captured the meaning of its title.

When The Bure Valley Railway, Norfolk’s longest narrow gauge steam railway, first opened in July 1990 it had no steam locomotives of its own and had to rely on those borrowed from The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway in Kent. Twenty five years on the Railway now has five steam locomotives purpose built for the line. During the Everything Goes Weekend, 23rd - 25th May 2015, all available locomotives, coaches and rolling stock will be in action. There will be a special intensive timetable in operation throughout the weekend to allow visitors the opportunity to see as many different locomotives as possible hard at work over the nine miles between Aylsham and Wroxham. To keep younger visitors entertained there will a competition on the train journey, with a free prize for every correct entry. The workshop at Aylsham will be open throughout the weekend and staff will be on hand to answer any questions. Andrew Barnes, Director, says “this event will give railway enthusiasts and families alike a chance to see a collection of some of the world’s most powerful 15-inch gauge steam engines on display and in operation”. Train fares allow unlimited travel on the day of issue. Children under 5 travel free.

Cookery demonstrations return to Aylsham Market Place
Cookery demonstrations are making a return to Aylsham Market Place this summer! Such was the success of last year’s events, when top local chefs showed of their skills to enthusiastic audiences, that the Town Council has asked the Cittaslow committee and Slow Food Aylsham for a repeat series.
Starting in May, the cookery demonstrations will be held on the first Saturday of each month, coinciding with the town’s FARMAaccredited Farmers’ Market. Chefs will have a free rein to cook anything they wish but they will be asked to source their main ingredients from the market or local shops.
Chair of the Cittaslow committee Giles Margarson said he is delighted 12
to help bring the cookery demonstrations back to the town. “Last year’s events were a great success,” he said, “and the Council and market stallholders were very keen to see them back this year. We are lucky to have so many great chefs locally who we can call on to showcase their skills and promote local food. And as always it‘s a pleasure to work with Slow Food Aylsham who bring their own food-related expertise.”
The first chef in the 2015 series is local favourite Derrol Waller who always delights the crowds with his quick repartee and Tommy Cooper impressions! Things get underway at around 9am on Saturday 2 May and just like last year, it’s all free for the public, including no doubt, samples of Derrol’s creations. Cromer Times 468 April 25th 2015

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Although Pussy Galore and Domino are still with us at present, we have said goodbye to some of our long term residents since the last article. Smuts (now Phoebe), a lovely black girl, joined us at four months old and although the kittens had been in a home environment, they had not been socialised and were very timid. Her brothers and sister were quick to respond to the care they received and left for new homes some time ago. Phoebe was reluctant to have contact with her carers but by being patient and not trying to rush her, she began to realise that she could trust us (the little treats did help with this but not with her waistline). Phoebe has now gone to a new home with a lady who already has one cat that needed time to settle. She will let her adjust to her new life at her own pace. Although it does take some cats time to settle they do often surprise us and settle happily straight away.
Felicity (now Fliss) came into care at 9 months old, the same week as Phoebe. She too had received little contact from her owner so was very nervous when she joined us with her mother, four siblings and four
Fun Afternoon
younger kittens. Although mum tested positive for FIV the other cats and kittens tested negative and most were soon re-homed (including mum to an indoor home). However Fliss and her sister Verity have been waiting patiently for someone to realise what lovely cats they are and again, within the week, Fliss, like Phoebe, has Verity, patiently waiting to been re-homed. We are now hoping someone be chosen will come along and choose Verity too. Fliss and Phoebe are beautiful black cats and so is Verity, who is a very gentle girl with a lovely nature. She just needs someone who is willing to give her time to settle because, once she does, she too will make that person a wonderful companion.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special campaign mentioned in the last article.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Our speaker this month, Denise Treissman, explained how helpful meditation could be for increased health and well-being - a way of ‘creating space’. She then led us through a five minute meditation, asking us to relax our bodies, from feet through to our necks and heads, and to then concentrate on our breathing, thus letting go of our worries and concerns, even just for a short time. A fascinating subject that many of us plan to pursue.
Our May meeting centres around Resolutions, both the present one to go forward to the national AGM in June, and future ones. It is always interesting to see the amazingly varied subjects that concern our members.
We shall be running a cake stall at Roughton Village Fete on 30 May, between 2pm. and 4.30pm at Highview, Norwich Road, Roughton. As well as cakes, there will be tray bakes, savouries, and jams and chutneys.
Visitors are always welcome to our meetings – the second Wednesday evening of the month, at 7.30pm at Roughton Village Hall. We have groups covering craft, walking, 10 pin bowling, and we arrange outings to, for example, Newmarket Ladies Day, various local stately homes and gardens, theatres, and whatever takes our fancy! Why not come along, meet us, and learn more about this powerful national organisation of women who meet to share friendship and interests, and have been doing so for 100 years! Launch of Air Jump at Hilltop causes jumping bonanza
This month marked the launch of a new outdoor activity, Air Jump, at Hilltop Outdoor Centre in North Norfolk, which is the first of its kind in England. Air Jump is a 16 metre (52ft) jumping tower with various height platforms for people to jump off, before free-falling into a giant air bag. It was officially opened by the Chairman of Norfolk County Council, Councillor Brian Hannah who cut the ribbon and Sheila Oxtoby, Chief Executive of North Norfolk District Council who took the first plunge from 10 metres to celebrate. Air Jump has varying jumping heights to choose from, which include two fun level jumps at 4 metres (13ft) and 5 metres (16ft), three high adrenaline jumps at 7 metres (23ft), 8 metres (26ft) and 10 metres (33ft), as well as a 13 metre (43ft) jump planned for the near future for the most extreme adrenaline junky. Sheila Oxtoby commented “The addition of this unique and exciting activity at Hilltop Outdoor Centre in Sheringham is fantastic news for local thrill seekers and for visitors looking for an experience with a difference. “Tourist attractions contribute significantly to the wellbeing of North Norfolk’s economy and I am pleased to see a local business get a great idea off the ground Sheila Oxtoby that will not only atprepares to jump tract new visitors to

Mayor of Sheringham, Patricia Brooks said “This new attraction will add to the amazing experience and adventure which everyone can enjoy at Hilltop in North Norfolk. THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER GREENHOUSES
At this time of the year, many people will be considering buying a greenhouse to allow them to grow plants and crops that need more shelter and higher temperatures than are found in the open garden. Greenhouses are season-stretchers – earlier springs and later autumns. For summer food think tomatoes, peppers and aubergines. In winter they can be filled with hardy salads. Sowing seeds, growing on plug plants, propagation and protecting plants on chilly spring nights are just some of the other advantages. Deciding to buy a new greenhouse is the easy bit, deciding which one to buy is harder. There are greenhouses for every taste and every budget. My golden rule is to buy the biggest and best you can afford – you will never regret it. Choosing which product to buy: Wood or aluminium? Aluminium is usually the material of choice for a greenhouse, whether in natural metal or with a
painted frame. A colourful frame may fit into the garden better, especially if the structure can be seen from the home. Aluminium needs no upkeep, and the glazing bars are thin, casting little shade. Wood is an attractive, traditional building material and better suited to some garden styles. However, it needs periodic upkeep.
Shape and size The taller a greenhouse is at the eaves, the better the light transmission and therefore the wide the range of plants that may be grown. The eaves should be at least 1.5m tall. The ridge should be at least 60cm above the eaves to allow a door that gives easy access, sufficient slope to shed rain and to encourage loss of excess heat. Glazing to ground level gives the greatest heat flexibility, but half-walling, using masonry or timber will reduce heat loss. Ventilation It is important to ensure that a greenhouse has plenty of windows that you can open to provide sufficient ventilation. Roof vents are also essential, and ideally should be on both sides of the ridge. Automatic vents that open or close in response to greenhouse temperatures can be useful. Plastic or glass glazing? The best glazing material is glass, as it lets 90% of light through and does not degrade in sunlight. Toughened glass should be used for doors and any-
where where people might fall onto the glass.
I have referred above to the importance of ventilation and this reminds me of the village blacksmith from Letheringsett, near Holt, named Johnson Jex. His headstone in Letheringsett church, illustrated here, shows the range of this man’s achievements but interestingly back in the 1820s he invented devices for opening windows on greenhouses and conservatories in order to automatically control the temperature and passage of air. CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY
April has been a busy month for the Society. Our monthly meeting took the form of a gardeners’ question time. We were delighted to welcome three experts to answer questions from the audience. Charlotte Philcox is well known to listeners to Radio Norfolk for her contributions to the Saturday gardening programme, Peter Purdy runs Woodgate Nursery at Aylsham and Graham MacDonald is in charge at North Walsham Garden Centre.
When asked what was their least favourite job in the garden Graham had no hesitation in deciding that weeding was not for him, Charlotte dislikes cutting the grass and pruning hedges and Peter hates sweeping up leaves in the autumn. On a more positive note both Graham and Charlotte found pleasure in pruning fruit trees while Peter said that taking cuttings was something that gave him pleasure.
One member had brought in a sickly looking cutting from a box plant to see if the panel could advise her on what was the problem and what could be done to bring it back to life.
Initial thoughts were that it was infected with box blight and therefore needed to be removed completely but further questioning

THE STRAND CLUB
Earlier this month our first meeting in our new venue of the Sports Pavilion went with a swing. It was wonderful to be able to see the sun shining on the grounds through the large windows and we had a good turn out for our spring lunch. Twenty five members and friends came to enjoy the lovely cheese ploughmans conceived, bought and laid out by Josie with the able help of Jean, Jackie and Glo who also made some gorgeous chocolate trifles for our dessert. We were delighted to see residents of Glendon House here with us once again, supported by Laura and a colleague. They really enjoyed their lunch and were, as always, most welcome. We hope to see them at many future meetings.

Between mouthfuls we discussed our next few meetings, the first of which is on 13 May when we will be visited by Sandra Dalzell from Happisburgh Owls. Sandra will bring along several of her charges who will not fly but who will be available for stroking and for holding on a gloved fist. This meeting starts as usual at 2.30pm in the Sports Pavilion and will carry the normal entrance fee of £1 for members and £2 for nonmembers. This includes refreshments (raffle tickets available separately) and we hope as many people as possible will come to enjoy the spectacle of these beautiful birds and to hear Sandra talk about caring for them.

www.jweddingcars.co.uk We then discussed our outing in June. On 10 June, we will be going to Langham Glass, leaving Overstrand at 12noon. Sanders Coaches are providing the transport and we shall eat at Langham when we arrive. Food choices and payment for it should be given to Josie, Chris or Glo in plenty of time so that we can inform the cafe. Once we have had our lunch we will then be taken through to watch the glass blowing demonstration after which there will still be time to visit the shop before boarding the coach at 4pm for our return drive home. Based on a figure of 15 people on the 29 seater coach and including the group admission charge of £3, it is estimated that the cost will be about £15 per person (lunch extra as mentioned above, menu available from Glo). We would like to fill the coach both for friendly reasons and for economic ones as the cost will reduce the more people come. So please bring your friends.

Members were told of Cromer Flower Club's outing to Long Sutton Flower Festival on Saturday 25 April. We have been invited to join them and it certainly sounds very appealing. The coach leaves Cromer Junior School (where there is plenty of parking) at 9am and stops at Heacham Lavender for coffee. Lunch is available in Long Sutton Church for a very reasonable price and they are planning to be back at Cromer Junior School at around 4pm. I'm sure several of us will go along and those that wish to should ring Jill Breeze on 01263 579699. Payment of £10 should be made upon booking. We look forward to many happy occasions in our new home in the pavilion and always welcome visitors.

Cheeky and amusing exhibition
The Gallery Norfolk has a new exhibition of artworks called ‘Facebooks’ by Alison Stockmarr opening on the 24th April 2015. Alison’s ‘Facebooks’ is a collection of work poking gentle fun at the social networking site Facebook. She matches old photographs and images with suitably titled books, to create an old-style ‘Facebook’ profile in a collage, like a library of invented friends of yesteryear in an artwork to hang on the wall. And, it has to be said, appropriate, and sometimes inappropriate, narratives are composed to complete the picture! So beware, some can be a little cheeky…. But we hope you ‘like’ them.
It’s get set, go, for council Chief Exec The Chief Executive of North Norfolk District Council will be putting her best foot forward for charity at this year’s London Marathon.
Sheila Oxtoby is spending every moment of her spare time in between her busy schedule training for the London Marathon to raise money for Sense, the UK's largest organisation offering support to deafblind people and their families. Sheila will be sharing where she enjoys running the most and offering tips of the best places to run in North Norfolk @NorthNorfolkDC #SOLM (Hashtag stands for: Sheila Oxtoby London Marathon) Chief Executive of NNDC, Sheila Oxtoby, said “This is my first and most probably my last marathon! I wanted to push myself and do something special to help raise money for such a good cause.
“Supporting Sense means supporting a vision for a world in which all deafblind children and adults can lead full and active lives in our society. The work they do is amazing and I would welcome anyone who wishes to support me and in turn help me to help a deafblind child tell his mummy "I love you" for the first time.”

selection of art, glass, photography, ceramics, jewellery and stylish gifts.
Richard Kramer, Sense Deputy CEO added “The very best of luck to Ms Oxtoby with her first marathon effort! The London Marathon is no mean feat and we can’t thank the Chief Exec enough for all her hard work to raise awareness of the work Sense does in Norfolk and vital funds for deafblind people to enjoy the things that most of us take for granted.”

Volunteering at the North Norfolk Railway
It’s not all about steam, soot, oil and grease... You can lend us a clean as well as a dirty pair of hands! The North Norfolk Railway (NNR) has launched a new upbeat campaign aimed at attracting people of all ages and skills to help the award winning tourist attraction steam on into the future. The initiative entitled ‘Clean Hands – Dirty Hands’ was launched on Monday 13 April and is aimed at informing people that there is much more to volunteering at the NNR than just getting your hands dirty and that there are many opportunities for people who may prefer tasks that keep their hands clean. New leaflets have been produced with custom made display boards at each of the NNR Stations to inform people who visit the railway how they can get involved NNR Director John Durrant said “Through research we have discovered that many people think volunteering at the NNR is all about steam, soot, oil and grease but that could not be further from the truth. The railway has endless openings for people who do not want to don overalls such as station staff, waiting staff on the dining train, bar staff on the Muddle and Get Nowhere Buffet Car, administration work, shop staff and helping with our highly successful Santa Specials at Christmas to name but a few of the
Cromer Music Evenings Concert
Cromer Music Evenings’ concert at Templewood, Northrepps on Sunday 26 April features cellist Jane Lindsay accompanied by Jennifer Hughes on piano.
many opportunities available. Trevor Eady, who is the General Manager at the NNR, commented “Although the NNR is a massive business and has a number of paid staff the railway is mainly operated by volunteers, in fact without them it would not be here. All profits are ploughed back into the organisation, there is no private gain and our object is to keep trains steaming along the North Norfolk Coast for many years to come. We need people with a wide range of skill sets to achieve this and there has been the false impression that it’s all about getting your hands dirty. By launching this initiative we hope that people who prefer to stay clean will see that the NNR is the ideal place to volunteer and be part of something that is now gaining national recognition in the heritage world”
This young duo has already made a glittering reputation for themselves performing with some of the best known names in classical music around the world.
Jane has already played at the Wigmore Hall, the Purcell Room and at music festivals across Europe. Her status as an exciting rising star lead to the Royal College of Music providing her with a superb ‘cello made in Italy in 1610.
Jennifer Hughes is already highly respected as a piano soloist and accompanist having won prizes across Europe and Russia.
Their concert will include Debussy’s Sonata for cello and piano, Ravel’s Piece en Forme de Habanera, Beethoven’s Seven Variations of Bei Mannern from the Magic Flute and Sonata for cello and piano opus 19, by Rachmaninov. This promises to be an outstanding and compelling performance.
Concerts start at 3pm. at Templewood, Frogshall, Northrepps, near Cromer. Tickets sold at the door, no advance bookings. Admission: Members £8. Non members £12. Students and children £2.
For membership details: Sue Riggott 01 263 578152 and for programme information call Tina Anderson on: 01 263 579400 or for further performance dates, visit the website www.cromermusicevenings.org.uk

Council welcomes Albert Bartlett to the district North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), are delighted that the former Heinz
Westwick factory near North Walsham has been acquired by a growing, international company - Albert Bartlett. Following the announcement last October that Heinz was considering closure of the factory, NNDC has been offering support and assistance to staff on future employment and retraining options. Support has included organising a careers fair event attended by ten local businesses, offering Heinz staff the chance to sign on to the Council’s temporary employment register as well as offering employability support surgeries and self-employment advice. In addition to this, several meetings involving senior officers and Leader of the Council have taken place with the both Heinz and prospective purchasers of the factory. The contact with Heinz has offered advice and guidance on the forthcoming closure whilst advice and information about potential grants and funding streams have been offered to the new purchasers - Albert Bartlett. Sheila Oxtoby, Chief Executive of North Norfolk District Council said “After all the uncertainty about the future of the plant over the past six months, the news that Albert Bartlett is acquiring the Westwick factory is fantastic and a really positive development for the local economy, whom obviously see North Norfolk as a great place to invest and do business in. ”

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club Tales from the Bowling Green ...
The coffee morning at the clubhouse was very well supported by club members, old and new, and it was good to see the new members joining in the chatter about roll ups and friendly games.
Thank you to all who attended and also to those who provided home-made cakes and raffle prizes and helped in the kitchen.
The last two quiz evenings have now taken place, but as I am writing this in advance I do not know the results. Will update you next time.
The final of the Wednesday Afternoon short short mat challenge cup has also taken place and victory went to Keith Pantling who beat Bob ‘Treasure’ Allard by just 2 shots in the final. Congratulations to all competitors and to all those club members who made that social activity so successful during the winter months. Tony has a mobile phone with a camera, not
unusual you may think. He was not impressed with the photographs that he was able to take. After some 18 months a friend suggested that he may like to peel off the almost invisible lens protector. Now the photos are excellent – with no blue ‘sheen’. Technology!! On clean-up day Jackie turned on the vacuum cleaner before bag was connected, cleaner sucked then blew out dust all over the changing room. That won’t happen again.
