Issue 469 9th May 2015
CROSS-BORDER RAID IN NAME OF CULTURE
Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent
Cromer-based writer, broadcaster and entertainer Keith Skipper is gearing up for another cultural raid over the border to draw old rivals even closer together.
Last summer’s Suffolk safari with his Missionaries of Mirth delivered enough home truths and raised sufficient hearty laughs to warrant an action replay at Lowestoft’s Marina Theatre on Sunday 7 June at 2.15pm.
‘Here We Are Again!’ is a natural fun-packed successor to the highly successful ‘We Come in Peace!’ with both shows born out of a burning desire to knock down old prejudices and build new bridges. “Rumours are rife that Lowestoft could do with at least one more”
New Puzzle Page & Competition
said Skip after a recent recognisance trip under the cloak of darkness.
Of course, there is added spice this time with Norwich City and Ipswich Town both embroiled in the big Championship promotion race. The hope is both sets of supporters will accept their respective fates in the true sporting spirit.
“We have much more in common to celebrate than marked differences to force us apart. Our glorious dialects meet somewhere in the middle before Suffolk starts singing. We both laugh at Essex, ourselves and each other.”
(bus-driving Bard of Bodham), fiddler supreme Chris Holderness, melodeon maestro Ian Prettyman (who also acts as cultural attaché in his native Lowestoft) and singer Danny Platton.
There will be a collection for the Eastern Daily Press ‘We Care Appeal’ at the end of the show.
All tickets are £10 from the Marina box office on 01502 533200 or online at www.marinatheatre.co.uk.
Skip will be joined on stage by Mundesley favourites comedian Pat Nearney (The Norfolk Nut), Sheilah Olley (The Norfolk Fairy), inside this issue Mik Godfrey
“I have been to Suffolk before” said Skip “after being told Southwold is no more than Cromer with an A Level. I did take to the waters at Aldeburgh – but they didn’t come up to my expectations. It was much more fun holding elocution lessons in Walberswick.”

Hawks and Owls
At their April luncheon meeting, members of the Cromer and Sheringham PROBUS Club heard a talk by Neil Chadwick from the Hawk and Owl Trust.
The Trust manages nature reserves in Norfolk, Somerset and Yorkshire and with the help of slides, Nick described the Trust’s work at the Sculthorpe Moor Community Nature Reserve. He also showed slides of Peregrine Falcons that usually nest on cliffs or in gorges. In the past they have suffered from pesticides and illegal trapping by gamekeepers but their numbers are now increasing and they have been regularly nesting on Norwich Cathedral since 2011. Nick paid warm tribute to the many volunteers who give their time to support the Trust’s projects and he was thanked for his fascinating talk by PROBUS club member, Mike Warner. Cromer and Sheringham PROBUS club will celebrate its 40th anniversary in May with a special luncheon attended by members and their wives and partners and they will be entertained by local celebrity, Olly Day.
PROBUS Clubs exist throughout the country to enable retired professional and business gentlemen to meet and socialise and so if you think you might be interested in joining, go to www.candsprobus.club for further information.

Due to our speaker being taken ill at the last minute we had to arrange our own entertainment for our April meeting and this we did with the help of members who recited poems, read stories and told us of their experiences with the WI. All very light hearted.

Judy Roberts gave a report of the Federation Meeting in St. Andrew’s Hall in Norwich. With it being the Centenary year of the WI, quite a lot of the ladies wore a variety of headwear. The speakers were Janice Langley from National Headquarters and Jane Robinson, who is an author and read extracts from her book about the WI.
After lunch the speaker was Eric Knowles from Antiques Road Show fame and he was very amusing. A good day was had by all.
Final arrangements were made for our Annual lunch on the 14 April, a trip to East Ruston Gardens in May and our Local Group Annual meeting at the Parish Hall where Chris Bell, from BBC Weather, will be the speaker. The competition of a painted egg was won by Moira Harding with Yvonne Mileham second and Judy Roberts third.
Next month is our Resolution meeting and we will be discussing and voting on “Failing to Care - assessment of need in long term care”, the result of which will go forward to our national Meeting at the Royal Albert hall in June. Our speaker will be Gail Bradley talking about the ACWW (The Associated Country Women of the World).
New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

SAM LARNER: MAN OF SONG, MAN OF THE SEA
The life and songs of Norfolk folk singer Sam Larner will be celebrated in North Walsham and Cromer this May as part of the North Norfolk Stories Festival.
Sam Larner was born in 1878 in Wintertonon-Sea. Singers in the Winterton fishing community and Sam’s life as a herring fisherman brought him into contact with the rich Norfolk folksong tradition including songs of seafaring and fishing.
Sam was recorded in 1958-60 by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger and his life story was told in their award-winning Radio Ballad 'Singing the Fishing', first broadcast by the BBC in August 1960.
'Sam Larner: Man of Song, Man of the Sea' is presented by local folk music enthusiast Brian Gaudet. It explores Sam Larner the man, the fisherman and folk singer. It examines Larner's contribution to the Norfolk folk tradition, and how this reflects upon the social history of the times.
The talk is accompanied by live music, song and traditional East Anglian step dancing. 'Sam Larner: Man of Song, Man of the Sea' takes place at North Walsham Library on Wednesday 13 May, from 2pm - 4pm, and at Cromer Library on Saturday 16 May, from 2pm - 4pm.
This is a family-friendly event, and all are
-
welcome to attend. Entry is free, but booking is advisable, as numbers are limited.
For the North Walsham event, book with North Walsham Library by email north.walsham.lib@norfolk.gov.uk or telephone 01692 402482.
For the Cromer event, book with Cromer Library by email cromer.lib@norfolk.gov.uk or telephone 01263 512850.
This event is part of the new North Norfolk Stories Festival, a programme of 18 free events over three days at museums, parks, libraries and other cultural venues and heritage sites across 10 North Norfolk towns. The Festival will give local people and visitors the chance to explore and enjoy the area’s fascinating history with a series of live performances, handson craft events, exhibitions, talks and walks from Thursday 14 to Saturday 16 May.
The Festival is being delivered by 21 partner organisations and run by Museums Norfolk, an organisation that supports and works on behalf of heritage organisations across the county, and is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

Administering an Insolvent Estate
Written by Anna French – Chartered Legal Executive with Hayes + Storr Dealing with the administration of an estate of a friend or family member can be a daunting prospect, particularly if there are a number of debts outstanding and not many assets.
It is very important in cases such as these to ensure that the debts are repaid in the correct order, as failure to do so could result in the Executor becoming personally liable.
If these are sufficient assets to pay all the debts but not to pay all of the legacies and gifts made by the Will, then the estate is “solvent”. All debts must be paid and then the legacies reduced proportionately.
If there are insufficient assets to pay the debts, then the estate is “insolvent”. It is essential for the Executor to obtain full details of all the outstanding debts. The Executor should also consider placing Statutory Notices to creditors in a local paper and the London Gazette. This would provide protection for the Executor if any unknown creditors came forward in the future.
The Executor then needs to prepare a list of the debts. Secured creditors take priority and this includes mortgages registered against properties. The usual course of action would be for the creditor to obtain payment by releasing the security (i.e. selling the property).
Reasonable funeral and administration expenses, which includes legal fees, are next in line and can be paid before other liabilities.
The unsecured debts must then be paid in the order of priority according to the Administration of Insolvent Estates of Deceased Person’s Order 1986.
The first of these are “preferred debts”. These include wages or salary owed by the deceased to an employee. Ordinary debts follow and this includes overdrawn bank accounts, credit cards and outstanding care fees. This is the category where most debts are likely to fall.
The next category is the “deferred debts” and this would include a loan made to the deceased by his or her spouse.
The debts must be paid in the order of priority and so all preferred debts would have to be paid in full before moving down to the ordinary debts and so on.
If there are insufficient assets pay all the debts in one category, then they must all be reduced proportionately and the figures agreed with the creditors. If no agreement can be reached, an application to Court will be needed.
There are complex rules regarding property which is co-owned and passes automatically to the surviving owner, and whether this can also be taken into account when calculating the funds available to pay the debts.
This can therefore be a complicated area and the Executors should do all they can to protect themselves from personal liability. If you find yourself in this position, we would recommend that you take legal advice as soon as possible.

Crayford and Abbs Practical Car and Van Rental
Practical Car Hire and Van Rental is returning to its roots with the arrival of Crayford and Abbs joining the franchise at both Bodham and Mundesley.
Practical Car & Van Rental is one of the largest vehicle rental companies in the UK, with over 170 outlets, dominating the mid-range market. Practical Used Car & Van Rental was founded in 1984 by Bolton Agnew (from Oulton, near Aylsham) and Harold Williams, taking an American concept of renting older cars and vans from small community based garages as an add on to their core motor trade-based business. The company changed name in 1990 to Practical Car & Van Rental, allowing them to offer newer vehicles, yet still looking to make the most of their experience and history.

Tuliptree Designs.... . . . . b e i n sp i re d
To date Practical has not had a franchisee in North Norfolk for many years. However, that all changes in May, when Crayford and Abbs at Mundesley and Bodham officially join the Practical Company!
This addition to the Crayford and Abbs business all stems from a recent prize trip to South Africa for the MD Kevin Abbs. During the Nissan holiday, Kevin and Elaine spent time during their safari with Graham and Sally Furneaux, whose company had purchased Practical in 2014 and, following discussion regarding the business and the open point in North Norfolk, Kevin felt there was a gap in the North Walsham and Holt areas for Car and Van rental, hence this venture being launched this May!
Practical’s business model is based around excellent customer service at competitive prices, so mixed very well with the ‘ideal’ of Crayford and Abbs. Adding to their existing ties with Nissan they will run a small fleet of Nissan cars, with every model available, including automatics and electric cars. Alongside a selection of vans to include an electric eco one! They have access to all variants through Practical and also offer ‘one way’ transactions.
Crayford and Abbs are also establishing their own car club – they see many customers who for various reasons give up their car ownership, but need the use of one for holidays or infrequent trips not sufficient to justify ownership of either a larger car or indeed total ownership – please call Tom for further information. This venture is operated from both Bodham and Mundesley under the manager Tom Partridge who can be contacted on 01263 588160. Cromer Times 469 May 9th 2015 20

Sheila Oxtoby, Chief Executive at North Norfolk District Council, said “Cromer West Promenade provides an excellent platform to enhance visitors experience and for locals to enjoy. It will also encourage the use of the better bathing beaches to the west of the pier and the beautiful vistas towards the wilder shore and cliff lines towards the west and to strengthen the access and gateway to the town from the large Runton Road car park.”
The proposed design takes into account many of the suggestions put forward from stakeholders including; improved café facility, a ‘fishery activity centre’ with educational and play equipment, pop-up stalls, small auditorium area for entertainment or demonstrations, Cromer fishing/ heritage trail (to be extended into the Town), exhibition space, improved lighting, improved toilets and more beach huts. There are also discussions ongoing with the COAST arts group regarding supporting bids to obtain funding for a major art installation.
After viewing the initial designs stakeholders were generally positive and the feedback given is now being looked at including options for a Fishing heritage centre/area and the use of lighting as an attraction as well as a necessity.
Volunteers were sought to take forward two main streams of the project looking at the detail of the Heritage/Information Trail and the family facilities, play and education elements. These will meet over the next few months to take these elements forward.
The roll out of the design will be phased to take into account current funds and initial service needs. Additional features will be installed as and when funding comes available but it is hoped that the provision of a master plan will make applications for future funding easier and more successful.

Stakeholders gathered to hear the proposals and view visuals being brought forward. The aim is to provide a long-term master plan for the holistic improvement of the west promenade to make it a vibrant and popular destination throughout the year.

Aylsham Nursery to raise funds for local Memorial Trust at 5th annual Garden Show Woodgate Nursery, Aylsham is delighted to announce its popular annual Garden Show is back this May in aid of the Liz Jones Memorial Trust, which supports young children around the Aylsham area through various projects. In addition, the Trust wishes to create an opportunity for a community apprenticeship. Free to attend, the Garden Show will take place on 16 and 17 May between 10am – 4.30pm and will aim to build on the success of last year’s event, which welcomed more than 3,000 people and raised an incredible £1,840 for The East Anglian Air Ambulance.
Packed full of inspiration for the garden, the annual show is a great day out for everyone including budding young gardeners who can have their face painted, compete in a fun Treasure Trail to win their very own seed kit, strike a pose with Woodgate’s ‘head in the hole’ board and get up close and personal with birds of prey.
Inspired by the Royal Horticulture Society’s (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show, five local garden designers will also be battling for visitors’ votes, to be crowned the winner of the best garden design. Last year the winner was the ‘Wind in the Willows’ garden designed by the Woodgate Nursery team who used a mixture of wild flowers, Iris and pond plants to create a garden full of colour and interest. Peter Purdy, founder of Woodgate Nursery, com-

North Norfolk estate agents voted the best in the East of England by its customers
Harrisons Estate Agents, based in North Norfolk, has been crowned the best estate agent in the East of England at the national ESTAS Awards 2015.
The industry awards, attended by 800 of the country’s top estate and letting agents, determine the best estate and letting agents in the UK. The winners are selected as a result of feedback provided by customers about the service they have received.
Harrisons, which has offices in North Walsham and Cromer, was presented with three awards by TV property expert Phil Spencer.
The North Walsham office was presented with the ‘Best in County’ award and the overall Gold award for the East of England region. The Cromer office was also presented with the Bronze award for the East of England region, resulting in Harrisons scooping two out of three of the top rankings available in the region.

The ESTAS are about those who have made people happy, put a smile on their face and made a genuine difference to peoples’ lives. These awards help agencies to focus on customer service levels and that’s why firms keep coming back year after year.
The Harrisons’ team collect their ESTAS awards from TV property expert Phil Spencer
Mark Tunneycliff, managing director at Harrisons Estate Agents, said “This award is extremely important to us because it is our customers who have judged our performance. We were proud enough to have been presented with the regional Gold award and Best in County award at last year’s ceremony. To have retained these titles for the second year running really shows that we are genuinely committed to providing an excellent service.
Phil Spencer, who has hosted the ESTAS every year since they began in 2003, explained THE WHEELS OF PROGRESS “An agent’s role is The Inner Wheel Club of Cromer and Sheringham has donated ÂŁ200 to about guiding people the Cromer Skate Park campaign. through one of the Construction of the new skate most stressful times park on the Meadow is well underway. The awards were presented at a lavish ceremony at the Hilton Park Lane in London last month.
Simon Brown, who owns the ESTAS, said “The ESTAS are special because the shortlisted and winning firms are selected purely on the service they deliver to their clients. In fact just taking part shows an agent’s commitment to their customers and to be shortlisted is a great achievement in itself. For the winners this is the highest accolade they can receive in the industry.
Alex Chesterman, Founder & CEO of headline sponsor Zoopla Property Group, said “This is our sixth year of sponsoring the ESTAS and we are delighted to be once again supporting this key industry event. The ability to collect and act on customer feedback is essential to the success of any business and rewarding those who provide the best service in the industry, as these awards do, is perfectly aligned with our business. Norfolk Special Olympics Swimmers Make Waves
A swimming team representing Special Olympics Norfolk made waves, quite literally, with an impressive medal haul at the recent inaugural Special Olympics Eastern Region Spring Gala held in Hatfield.
Seven swimmers from Norfolk took part with the team comprised of Christopher Spinks (1 gold, 1 silver - Hethersett) Katherine Russell (1 gold, 1 bronze - Hethersett), Lydia Browne (1 bronze Shropham), Natasha Burrows (1 gold, 1 bronze - Attleborough), Shane Baxter (1 bronze - Norwich) and Keziah Baxter (1 silver - Norwich) and Jasmine Ray (Thorpe).
Nicola Baxter, volunteer with the Special Olympics Norfolk swimming team, said
Cromer Times 469 May 9th 2015
"She was swimming in her first ever Special Olympics competition and performed superbly. She would have won a medal but waved to her mum as she was swimming, which isn't allowed, so she was disqualified," added Nicola.
Special Olympics Norfolk runs a range of sports for people with intellectual disability across the county, including skiing, swimming, gymnastics, athletics, tennis, cricket and boccia.
"The swimmers did brilliantly against very stiff competition from larger clubs as far away as Plymouth and Bolton. We especially applaud Jasmine for enjoying her swimming so much and showing us the true spirit of Special Olympics.

Update on appeal against refusal of Planning Permission for a wind turbine on land at Pond Farm, Bodham, Planning application PF/11/0983 and the case was determined in the High Court in the Council’s favour. North Norfolk District Council has been notified that the appeal against refusal of Planning Permission for a wind turbine on land at Pond Farm in Bodham has been withdrawn and the pending inquiry set for 9 June 2015 has consequently been cancelled.
The application for a wind turbine on land at Pond Farm, Bodham, was refused by North Norfolk District Council in August 2012. An appeal was made to the Secretary of State and the Inspector, Mr. Novitzky, allowed the appeal and granted permission for the proposed turbine. The decision letter was issued on 8 April 2013.
The Council initiated a legal challenge against the Inspector’s decision 20
Following this, the applicants applied to the Court of Appeal, seeking leave to appeal against the High Court judgment. Permission was refused on 2 June 2014 as “the sole ground of appeal does not have a real prospect of success.”
The consequence of the High Court decision was that the appeal was remitted to the Planning Inspectorate for reconsideration. The Secretary of State called in the appeal for his own determination following representations from the Council and a local action group and the appeal had been listed for hearing at an inquiry to commence on 9 June 2015. Following the notification of the appellant’s withdrawal, this will no longer take place. Cromer Times 469 May 9th 2015

An Act of God’ Rev Paul Cubitt is hoping not to see!
As the completion of the recent restoration of North Walsham’s St Nicholas Church tower finishes, Rev Paul Cubitt and his team look towards the next project, the church windows.
St. Nicholas’ windows are collapsing under their own weight and it is feared that strong winds may be enough to blow the windows in.
Rev Cubitt said “The windows are a huge part of the on-going restoration for the church with an estimated cost of up to £250,000”. The work of specialists will involve the removal and replacement of the old lead that holds the splendid stained glass windows together. “It is the sheer age and weight of the windows that is causing them to fold in on themselves”.

It is hoped that once enough money has been raised, work can start on the WW1 Memorial window at the east end of the church, which remembers the town’s contribution to that awful war. This, the largest of the windows and the most in need of restoration, will cost around £76,000. The first fund raising event to be held at the church will be a day aimed at the town’s children.

Gresham’s awarded £10,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund
Gresham’s School has recently been awarded £10,000 through the Heritage Lottery Fund’s (HLF) ‘First World War: then and now’ programme to create a dedicated website as part of its commemorations for the Centenary of the First World War.
This award will enable the School to provide an interactive website devoted to the 110 fallen pupils and three staff, with profiles and supporting documentary evidence of those who lost their lives, plus a database of information on the 500 from the School who served. They will also be able to carry out essential conservation work on important sources, such as the roll of honour and photograph albums, to make sure they are available for future generations.
Academic Deputy Head, Simon Kinder, commented “I am absolutely thrilled about Gresham’s success in its application for an HLF grant. The Archive resources relating to Gresham’s during the First World War are an extraordinary educational and community resource and it is tremendously exciting that the HLF grant will make this material fully accessible to a national and international audience for generations to come.”
The School Archive is a fantastic resource for historians of all ages to study the conflict, including letters from the front and obituaries
published in the Gresham Magazine, as well as photograph albums, a vellum roll of honour, home front accounts, and biographical material donated by family members. Thanks to a project developed with Charterhouse, Year 9 pupils are fortunate in being able to use the collection to enrich their WWI history lessons, and Gresham’s would like to extend this opportunity to pupils in other schools. Liz Larby, School Archivist said, “The new website will provide digitally recorded materials which will give access to schoolchildren, historians, people researching their family histories, and the local community to study the conflict and its impact on the School. Pupils will be involved in researching information for the website and members of the public will be invited to contribute their own family photographs and documents to add to our knowledge.”
In conjunction with Holt Library, Norfolk Record Office and the Norfolk Regimental Museum, Gresham’s took part in a family history day on 5 May which was a great opportunity for local people to use online and written records to find out about their WWI military ancestors with help from professionals. There was also an opportunity to visit the School Archives and to see some of our WWI collection.
Vellum roll of honour created by Gresham’s Housemaster Wynne Willson in honour of the boys of the junior house who were lost in the War, one of the items which will be conserved thanks to the grant.

Sheringham Lace Makers
Sheringham Lace Makers is a group of lace makers (surprisingly, perhaps!) which meets in St Andrews Church Hall, in Sheringham, every Monday afternoon in term-time, from 1pm to 4pm. We all make - or have made - bobbin lace, but our members also crochet, knit, embroider, and do all sorts of other crafts, and we would be more than happy to welcome new members and their crafts at our meetings. We are also pleased to see any holiday visitors at the meetings.
During the year, we arrange an October ’Make Lace, Make Friends’ Lace Day - with speaker and suppliers - several workshops, a summer

Sheringham Lace Makers also demonstrate at local fairs and events during the year, and the group has an extensive library of books, and also equipment, which can be borrowed, and as several of the members have taught, or still do teach, there is always someone around to help with any problems.
Our members do come from all over North Norfolk, from Hunstanton, North Walsham, Holt etc, so - if anyone is interested in joining us, please do give our Chairman, Carol Adkinson, a ring on 01263/822075 she will be pleased to give any more information.

Wild Wes Weekend set to celebrate the films of Wes Anderson with special introductions and discussions Film students from the UEA collaborate with Sheringham Little Theatre
Sheringham Little Theatre is excited to continue its special cinema seasons - this time by shining a light on indie-film favourite Wes Anderson, who has quickly risen to a household name since his first feature Bottle Rocket came out in 1996. The season starts on Saturday, 16 May and runs until Sunday 17 May. Anderson’s films are popular for their use of quirky characters, colourful imagery and charmingly choreographed symmetry, which is found in almost every scene. His work isimmediately recognisable for its distinct tone, and his stories are full of enticing escapades which make him a favourite choice for audiences across all ages. Film students from the University of East Anglia will introduce each screening, and will also lead discussions on each picture after it finishes. This gives audience members a unique chance to learn more about these films in a fun, informed and relaxed setting. The season kicks off with the family favourite The Fantastic Mr Fox, continuing with The Royal Tenenbaums and Moonrise Kingdom, and then concluding with the recent favourite The Grand Budapest Hotel. While each film is dazzlingly different, they are connected through the themes of family, adventure and nostalgia. Debbie Thompson, Director of Sheringham Little Theatre, said “These film festivals are a lovely way for our audiences to really immerse themselves in a topic or filmmaker, and enjoy a rare chance to see these fantastic films on the big screen again. We’ve been having a lot of requests to highlight Wes Anderson in a season, especially as his films are so widely loved by both film buffs and families alike.”
New arrivals at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic. No ink is safe… Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic has announced the arrival of two new high powered lasers. “The last few years have been very exciting for us and we have continued to invest in training and education and to add new services to our treatment menu”, says practice manager Trish. “We already have four different IPLs and 10 different lasers in addition to light emitting diodes and diamond microdermabrasion. Now we have added another q switch Nd-Yag and a KTP laser which will help us not only remove dark and red tattoos, but also treat people with deeper pigmentation and sun spots”. This laser produces very high powered and short nanosecond [one billionth of a second] pulses of light that shatter and disperse pigment particles without damaging the skin. This will allow us to treat all skin types, from very fair skin to dark skin concerns. In many parts of the world greater than 15% of adults have tattoos. It is estimated that 50% of those receiving tattoos will want to have them removed within 10 years of their application. Q switched laser is the ‘gold-standard’ laser for removal of tattoos and Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic will be very pleased to provide this service with five dedicated lasers to remove tattoos of most colours. One other application of this laser is a very quick ‘lunch-time’ facial that literally takes only a few minutes and a course of these can help rejuvenate the skin very well.
For Laser Tattoo or pigment removal contact Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic on 0800 0430737 or www.coltishallclinic.co.uk
“We’re all really excited about the UEA’s Film students leading these discussions, as every time we’ve had these Film seasons before they’ve been a huge success.” Tickets for the event are already on sale (with a discount for a full Weekend Ticket), and are available by calling Sheringham Little Theatre’s Box Office on 01263 822347 or by visiting www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Mountain Bike Challenge in aid of Macmillan
Forty one year old upholsterer Jason Cockaday from Sheringham and Robert Haylett, a 28 year old British Gas engineer from Badersfield, will be taking part in a mammoth off road event on 14 June in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Having not ridden a bicycle since he was a child, Jason decided that he and his wife Tracy should get mountain bikes to get fit and lose weight. As if that was not enough, he decided that to keep himself interested he would embark on a biking challenge, The Clennell Colossus. Not being able to persuade Tracy that she should join him, he enrolled the youth of the team, that is his niece’s fiancé Robert Haylett.
Both of them are now in training and realise that their levels of fitness are worse than they first thought, so should you see two men riding mountain bikes, red faced and out of breath, around Sheringham Park, please give them a wave. Being Norfolk men they realise that living in a fairly flat county does not bode well for mountain biking, but both are very determined and are finding hills in Norfolk they previously did not know existed.
the elevation and the substantial distance make this indeed a colossus challenge. As many of you reading this will know, both Rob and Jason have lost relatives to cancer, so they decided that they would raise money for the Macmillan cancer charity.
Macmillan do a great job caring for cancer patients through to the end of their lives and their The Clennell Colossus in support to the families involved Northumbria is a 47 mile off road is beyond measure. They hope to challenge set in the Cheviot Hills, raise as much money as possible Robert, not realising what he was letting with the route taking in 6500ft for this very worthy cancer himself in for, instantly agreed and they both of ascent, the equivalent of two charity and anyone wishing to signed up that same evening, leaving Rob the mountains. The team of Ellis Hagger, Gary Cure, Mark Green, Sean Leddy, Steen Stones and Mark Vidler expect to arrive in Cromer/Sheringham sometime around 10 May. The expedition aim is to raise £100,000, to be split equally between two charities - The Royal Marines Charitable Trust and Wessex Cancer Trust. Expedition leader, Ellis Hagger, explained how the idea evolved “We initially investigated an Atlantic row, but the costs were prohibitive. However, thanks to extensive restoration work on our 26 year old surf boat by local craftsmen John Clarke and Matt Williams, we realised that we already had a seaworthy vessel.”
With Sir Ranulph Fiennes as their patron, the challenge is already attracting lots of celebrity interest including Pete Goss, Helen Glover and Sir Steve Redgrave who have all voiced their support.
They list their aim as ‘to boldly row a surf boat where no one has surf rowed before – by circumnavigating Britain and raising as much money and awareness as possible for our two charities’.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club
Edna. Jack and Frank for all the time and effort they put in over the winter to make these evenings so successful. There is some debate as to whether the club could run some similar quiz evenings during the summer. Could even be linked to a few ends on the green beforehand. Watch this space. The first Spoon Drive of the season has been held and the two winners were Peter Bird and Bob Allard. It was good to see Chrissie on the green this last week having returned from the Continental sunshine. Maybe she is not finding it quite as warm as some of us imagine.
Tales from the Bowling Green ...
…Where the generally warm weather has seen many club members on the green getting as much practice as possible whilst it continues. Off the green we in fact only had one further Quiz Final. This was organised by Quizmaster John. With many questions available, sweets on the tables and ‘spot prizes’ for the audience when both teams could not answer a question a very pleasant evening was had by all. The winners were Sally Tipple, Peter Bird and Jack Purvis. The losing finalists Edna Bunkle, Keith Pantling and Roger Purser. I must thank again Quizmasters John,
Club friendly games start this Sunday with a visit from CMB BC from Wisbech and
Wacky Walkers aim to arrive at Cromer Pier on Festival Sunday 17 May
Diane Wheeler and Nicola Smith are walking 96 miles from Knettishall to Cromer along the Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path between 11 17 May dressed as a Crab & Lobster!
Why? They are raising funds for The Nook Appeal, developing children’s hospice care services including a new hospice in the heart of Norfolk.
The Crab & Lobster Festival team aim to give them a warm welcome, with our own Big Friendly Huggy crab and lobster at the pier entrance on Sunday 17 May 2.30pm - 3pm.
Come and join in all the fun... and help The Nook Appeal achieve its goal.
