Canaries back in Premier League

Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

Norwich City bagged two goals early in the first half to earn an instant return to the Premier League with victory over Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final at Wembley by 2-0. Both sides crashed the ball against the woodwork in the first few minutes. First Bradley Johnson and then 'Boro's Jelle Vossen Worth an estimated £120m to the victors, Cameron Jerome took advantage of a Daniel Ayala error to put the Canaries ahead, slotting the ball past 'Boro keeper Konstantopoulos at the near post after just 12 minutes. Three minutes later Nathan Redmond fired in after good teamwork in the build up. Norwich were excellent defensively for the rest of the match,

limiting Middlesbrough to half chances and were well worth the immediate return to the top flight.

Age Concern North Norfolk - Trustees Wanted

Have you ever thought about becoming a trustee to give something back to the community and area you live? It doesn’t have to be as time consuming as you might first think but if you can spare at least half a day a month you could make a real difference to a substantial amount of local people. If this sounds like something you are interested in then Age Concern in North Norfolk would love to hear from you.

Becoming a trustee should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. You can become involved in your community and help to change it in a positive way. Trustees can come from all walks of life - maybe you have just moved to the area or are recently retired, then this might be an opportunity for you to meet new people, learn new skills or use your invaluable existing skills in a cause or project that you believe in. Our charity’s mission is ‘to promote the well-being of all older people and help make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience’, If this is something that is equally important to yourself or maybe your life has been touched by the work of our organisation then please consider becoming a trustee. Alternatively, you may want to build on your CV with a fresh challenge, be looking to experience new, constructive,

insights into the charity sector before a change of career or have expertise that may be of a benefit to our organisation. Most of all you will be part of a team as a trustee and will have the opportunity to add your unique skills and experience while learning from others too in an open, productive environment; either way this could be the ideal position for you. Age Concern in North Norfolk provides a day centre and lunch club, a befriending service, a pop-in coffee morning and a variety of activities.

The four-day per week day centre offers personal care, laundry services, lunches and entertainment. The befriending service, funded by the Big Lottery, matches volunteers with isolated people who they visit at home thereby helping to relieve isolation and loneliness in our community. We have clubs across Cromer, Sheringham, and soon to be North Walsham, which provide companionship and activities for older people and an opportunity to get out and about. We often arrange outings and events as well as promoting regular intergenerational activities, fundraising

and partner charity work.

You can find information about the role of charity trustees at www.gov.uk/government/organisations/ charity-commission. Whilst you need to have an interest in older people, applications are welcome from people with a wide variety of backgrounds.

Most importantly we want you to make a difference to not only our charity but to the whole of North Norfolk by promoting our mission and believing in a better life for everyone in later life, your skills and experience are important and priceless to us so please get in touch if you would like to become a trustee. You are more than welcome to come along to our AGM on 18 June at 1pm at our daycentre in Sheringham, to get a better feel for our charity and what we are striving to achieve.

For more information, or to apply, please contact Margaret Drury, Trustee and Minutes Secretary, via our office on 01263 823126 or by email ageuknn.admin@xlninternet.co.uk

A heartfelt message to the people of Cromer

Jams, Chutneys and Pickles 7 West Street, Cromer. tel: 01263 519 039

I would like to express my thanks to all the wonderful people who voted for me in the local elections. I am overjoyed that I am able to build on the foundation from my previous two début years at NNDC. Working without divide, towards all things good, with vision and compassion for a brighter future. Together our inevitable goal to keep the ‘Gem of the Norfolk Coast’ shining infinitely will not waver.

Open Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 5 pm

The election campaign was relentless and I am truly grateful to the deliverers and personnel at HQ for brilliantly backing a memorable campaign. My running partner, Pierre Butikofer, was an inspirational driving force on this journey and kept me going even when we were exhausted. My thanks are extended to Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, who visited the town on numerous occasions to help out, even though he was running his own race for the region. There are so many other people who were involved, so please accept a universal acknowledgement to embrace all of you.

I am extremely proud of our beautiful town and the many events it has to offer throughout the year, thanks to dedicated organizers and volunteers. I will continue to support Photo: Chris Taylor their fine efforts at every given opportunity and will endeavour to enhance tourism and local business where possible. My approachability is my strength and I will continue to serve the wonderful people of this town to the best of my ability. I have never been a tribal person and after the initial euphoria of election time, it is vital to work across the board to achieve desirable results.

The parrot has set up home in a large bay tree in the Secret Garden and will provide accompaniment to our wonderful al fresco dining, available this summer for larger parties up to twelve people. Do call us on 01263512412 to book!

The parrot hasn’t developed a taste for crab yet, which is fortunate because as usual this superb Cromer delicacy is very, very popular. And a slightly more unusual way to try it is as potted crab as this recipe shows. Enjoy the summer and we look forward to seeing you soon!

Protecting North Norfolk’s Beach Huts Beach huts, that most quintessentially British feature of our coastline, are making headlines these days. From appearing in TV adverts to shocking stories about six-figure price tags, they’re rarely out of the media. In recent years, beach huts in Norfolk have also made the headlines, but not always for the right reasons. The terrible storms and tidal surges of December 2013 wreaked havoc that’s all too fresh in the minds of many, with dozens of beach huts along the coast being reduced to matchwood. Since the storms, North Norfolk District Council has required hut owners to have at least £500 of insurance cover to pay for the removal of debris and site clearance, should such destructive weather

Cromer Times 471 June 6th 2015

strike again. Previously, the cost burden fell upon council tax payers, with some feeling this unfairly subsidised beach hut owners.

It’s good to know that the beach ‘hutters’ of Norfolk can rest easy thanks to Love Your Hut. As a leading provider of beach hut insurance, they’ve made it their mission to help protect as many huts - and hutters - as possible. Their market-leading policy provides site clearance cover as standard. Love Your Huts’ senior underwriter and resident beach hut guru, Matthew Briggs, said “As a true hut enthusiast, I’m delighted that we’re supporting hutters in Norfolk. The hut community on this coast has been through a lot in recent times, and I’m proud of the fact we’re more than just a company that sells insurance. In fact, we’re rather obsessed with beach huts - after all, they’re a great British institution!”

Matthew can be contacted on 01924 580990, enquiry@loveyourhut.co.uk or via their website www.loveyourhut.co.uk.

Her flowers, which included beautiful long-stemmed and pretty orange spray roses, orchids and gloriosa to name but a few, were superb. Jacki also judged our competition with best in show Noreen Hawes. Our next meeting is on Monday 15 June at 7.30pm at Cromer Junior School with demonstrator Jenni Baker presenting ‘Chosen for You’. Celebrating 25 Years of Steam in the Bure Valley

When British Railways closed the line from Wroxham to Aylsham in 1982 and the track was lifted in 1984, many thought this to be the end of the route as a railway. Through the vision and drive of a committed group of enthusiasts and collaboration with a supportive local authority, the 15” gauge Bure Valley Railway was opened on 10th July 1990. The railway had a fleet of new, high quality, purpose built coaches, but no locomotives to haul them. To overcome this problem, locomotives were hired in from the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway in Kent. Twenty five years after opening the Bure Valley Railway is steaming ahead and will celebrate its 25th Anniversary on 10th July 2015. To celebrate this milestone the Railway will hold its Steam Back in Time event on Friday 10th July. This event will see the return to Norfolk of Winston Churchill from the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, the locomotive which hauled the very first train. All passengers on this day only will travel at the same fares as when the Railway first opened in 1990 (Adults £5.50, Juniors £3.95 and Under 5’s Free).

The celebrations will continue over the weekend of 11th & 12th July with a Steam Gala including two engines visiting from the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway in Kent, In addition to Winston Churchill, Green Goddess will also make a return to Norfolk. They will be hauling trains alongside the home fleet of Bure Valley Railway engines with an intensive service in operation on both days (Adults £12.50, Juniors £6.50 and Under 5s Free). Andrew Barnes, General Manager of the Railway, says “through the dedication and commitment of a small team of paid staff and active volunteers the Railway has developed into a thriving and self-sustaining tourist attraction for all ages. The scale of our trains are very popular with the younger audience and our disabled coaches allow wheelchair users and able-bodied passengers to travel together.”

ALL CAR SIZES AVAILABLE + AUTOMATIC & ELECTRIC VEHICLES OUT OF HOURS SERVICE ONE WAY RENTALS MEET & GREET

Trains are now operating daily to the end of October with special events throughout the year, including Santa and Mince Pie Specials. The railway also offers a very popular boat train which gives the opportunity for a journey by steam followed by a cruise on the Norfolk Broads. For those who would like to realise their childhood ambitions to be a train driver, Driver Experience Courses are available during off-peak periods. Facilities at the Railway include a café and a large shop selling model railways and gift at Aylsham with a souvenir shop at Wroxham. The Whistlestop Café seats up to 80 people and can provide everything from a cup of tea to a full meal with a roast lunch on the menu every Sunday. There is free parking at both stations. Midsummer

The sun blazes down, dazzling me, So much beauty for all to see, Two tawny owls happily chat, Proud and perky where they're sat, Perched on the old stone wall The tales they could tell one and all. The corn is ripe for cutting already In the distance, easy-going, steady, A combine harvester on the field Thrumming along to take its yield, Poppies growing everywhere, Bright, sweet-scented, fair. We all wear our cotton dresses, Ruffled by a breeze's caresses, As we enjoy the wonderful sun, This day was made for fun. Lilly the filly drinks from the stream, She pauses a moment as if in a dream. At six pm the church clock will chime, Everyone expected in church on time.

A sign for the times in Aylsham Just in time for the Spring Bank Holiday, Aylsham Community Partnership unveiled a striking new sign directing visitors to the town’s Heritage Centre.

From left: Gerry Grimes (Treasurer, Aylsham Community Partnership), Jayne Andrew (Heritage Centre Manager), Giles Margarson, Revd Andrew Beane. kneeling are Richard and Maureen Burr

The sign, made in oak by John Leaf of Matlaske woodcarvers, was designed to fit and blend with the existing church sign and Aylsham Parish Church vicar Revd Andrew Beane was on hand for the unveiling on Wednesday 13 May. The sign was constructed from oak donated by Aylsham residents Maureen and Richard Burr while Broadland District Council made funds available to cover the cost of carving. Commenting on the sign, Aylsham Community Partnership chairman Giles Margarson said “The Heritage Centre is a lovely building, sitting in the churchyard. It is a great resourced for the town as well as an attraction for visitors. With the new sign, we believe visitor numbers will increase, allowing more people to enjoy what the Centre has to offer. You can find out more about Aylsham Heritage Centre, including opening times, at www.aylsham heritage.com

Skate Park fundraising continues The Cromer Skate Park campaign has received a contribution of £181.66 from the Central England Co-operative.

While construction work on the Meadow may be nearing completion, the requirement for funding remains as urgent as ever. This generous donation from the Co-operative will help with the vital business of supporting the operation and maintenance of the skate park once it has opened, during the crucial early months of its operation.

The money was raised following a customer token of support drive. Shoppers at the Co-operative received tokens at the checkout. Upon leaving the store, they were invited L-R: Jean Spruce of Cromer Skate Park; to place these into a young supporters Adam Spruce and Ernie container of their choice, de Neve; Jayne Sadler-Barker, Team indicating which of a Trainer at the Co-operative food store in number of causes they Cromer. wished to receive a donation. Cromer WI

We started our May meeting with a minutes silence for an ex member, Joyce Isted, who recently passed away.

Our speaker was Gail Bradley who was travelling the country in ‘Zippy’, her camper van and hopes to visit as many institutes as possible. So far she has visited 100 WIs in 300 days. She is raising money for ACWW (The Associated Country Women of the World) and her fee for speaking was donated to this cause. She told us of her travels around the world and brought with her a selection of gifts which she had been given by WIs all around the globe. May is our Resolution meeting and we discussed and voted for the resolution, which was ‘Failure to Care. Assessment of Needs in Long Term Care’. Our delegate was there and she will take the result of our vote forward to the National Meeting at the Royal Albert Hall in June. Some of our members went on an organized walk at Blickling Hall and enjoyed it, despite the rain, and we also had a visit to the gardens at the Old Vicarage in East Ruston, where the weather was much kinder to us.

We discussed forthcoming visits to the theatre, Gressinghall Museum and Ely. The competition for a memento from a foreign holiday was won by Anita Jacobs, with Liz Holhouse second and Janet Darkins third. Our speaker next month will be Icarus Hines and he will be talking about High Street Butchers in the Modern World. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

Overstrand Evening WI

At our April meeting Sharon Willimot spoke about the important work of the Cromer & District Foodbank.

In today’s society it is difficult to imagine that anyone should be faced with hunger but unfortunately there are families in the area that struggle to put food on the table. Instead of our monthly competition members bought in food donations which weighed in at an impressive 21.4kg. Later in the month members enjoyed a pleasant walk in the grounds of Felbrigg Hall.

Early in May we had an excellent trip to Walsingham. On the two hour tour, our guide imparted a wealth of information and showed us places we might otherwise have missed. The National Resolution ‘Failing to care – assessment of need in long term care’ was discussed at some length at our May meeting before taking a vote. This was followed by refreshments and homemade cakes plus a Jar Tombola, to raise funds for our group.

At our June meeting members will be able to take an evening walk or play games, followed by Strawberries and Cream and a Bring and Buy Sale. We welcome visitors and prospective new members (you don’t have to be an Overstrand resident to join us) to our walks and monthly meetings. Our meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand.

Roughton & District WI

The speaker at our 10 June meeting (7.30pm in Roughton Village Hall) will be Ruth Smith, talking about Story Telling and, with that in mind, our competition will see members bringing along their favourite children’s book – an evening of heart-warming memories. Our July meeting will concentrate on planning our 2016 programme, followed by strawberries and cream, and a glass of wine.

The Swishing Evening we organised in April went very well and we look forward in June and July to a river trip, as well as a visit to East Ruston Gardens. Our walkers, bowlers and crafters continue to, regularly and enthusiastically, meet and plans are afoot for a champagne tea party to raise funds for the new children’s hospice which is being built for EACH. For further information, please contact Angela Newton on 01263 514476. Visitors are always most welcome.

North Norfolk Railway (The Poppy Line) Crossing the Line Appeal

A reminder, that our appeal for the two footbridges to be erected at our Holt and Sheringham stations remains open. The donations continue to come in and we are now just £3,700 short of our target. Our furthest flung donation has come from Australia and we have had considerable support from the local residents who have also contributed. I would like to thank all of our donors who have given so generously. The bridge at Sheringham will replicate the original structure at the time of closure and will, along with the relocated signal box, help restore the railway presence at the main ‘gateway’ to the town to that of the 50s. The footbridge at Holt, replicating the M&GN bridge at Drayton, will substantially ease access to the station for visitors using our ‘overflow’ car park. Both bridges should also provide additional photographic opportunities for our visitors, as well as enhancing the look of the Railway. Our current plans are to erect the Sheringham

footbridge, in conjunction with the remodelling of the station. This will be contracted out as it is a fairly complex task and needs to be coordinated with the overall station ‘development’ as we do not want to have two sets of contractors trying to work in the same physical area at the same time. At Holt we intend to build the bridge whilst maintaining the width of the platforms as we have plans to lengthen the platforms on the Railway to enable us to cater for six coach trains in the future. Just to reiterate the appeal fund is still open and if you haven’t already done so you can contribute through the shop on our website (www.nnr.co.uk), purchase shares (with enhanced privileges) or donate using Gift Aid which enables us to reclaim the tax on your donation, if you are a taxpayer. A donation of £1000, or over, will entitle you to a brass plaque, with a simple dedication

of your choice, to be fixed to whichever bridge you prefer. So please help us close the gap if you can. (More details of how to donate, if required, can be obtained by calling at Sheringham station or ringing 01263-820800) I would again like to thank everyone who has contributed so generously to this project and ask anyone who has not, to consider doing so. This will enable us to convert our plans into reality. The recent Coastal Community Fund grant to the Railway was solely to improve employment prospects in the area and only covers the remodelling of the station at Sheringham and improvements to the boiler shop at Weybourne. The footbridge was not included.

CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS - REVIEW

Ben Johnson and Tom Primrose - Templewood, Northrepps It is not every day one gets to see a Cardiff Singer of the World semi finalist, Kathleen Ferrier Award winner and BBC New Generation Artist perform in such intimate surroundings, but to hear him work alongside such a sensitive and brilliant accompanist as Tom Primrose was truly a treat.

In this all-Schubert song programme, the two gentlemen explored an extensive range of colours and emotions, from the dark and sinister psychological melodrama of "Der Zwerg" and "Die Doppelganger" to the light and folky "Die Taubenpost". Johnson’s tenor voice is rich, with a fabulous ring in his mid to upper range, and an ability to drop his larynx for an almost baritone-like fruitiness lower down. He is capable of tremendous power, but for me it was the quiet moments where the magic really happened - the crispest of consonants married with the softest of vowels showed great vocal mastery. Primrose’s musical intelligence was impossible to ignore. His

Where there is a Will there is a way! Written by Kiri Nichols – Solicitor at Hayes + Storr In today’s litigious society there is an increasing possibility of relatives making a claim against an estate. This is on the basis that the deceased did not make reasonable provision for them in their Will and can make an estate administration long and expensive.

Under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 a person can make a claim if they fall into one of six categories:• Spouse or civil partner of the deceased. • Former spouse or civil partner of the deceased (who has not remarried or registered a new civil partnership). • Any person who during the period of two years immediately before the death was living in the same household as the deceased’s spouse or civil partner. • Child of the deceased. • Anyone treated by the deceased as a child of the family. • Any other person who immediately before

the death was being maintained by the deceased.

The claimant has to show the Court that under the Will the deceased did not make reasonable financial provision for them.

The Judicial and Court Statistics published in 2010 appear to show that there has not been a significant increase in the number of claims being issued in Court. However, this view is not necessarily shared by probate lawyers (or their indemnity insurers) who are adamant there has been a huge increase in clients with probate issues. So how can you avoid your estate being faced with a claim? Making a Will for your dependants will ensure that the whole of your estate is available to provide for your loved ones. However, it may be that you wish to ensure certain people do not benefit. If your Will omits someone who falls within one of the above categories, they may

be able to claim against your Estate. In order to help protect against this possibility you can either make it clear in the Will or in a separate document why you are excluding that person. There are also additional precautions that can be taken to ensure that the validity of the Will is not contested in the future. It is therefore better to pay for a properly prepared Will than allow your Estate to face a costly claim in the future. “This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Hi, I’m Karen. I have recently moved to Norfolk from London where I have been working as an ITEC and Vodder trained registered therapist for 15 years. Based in Northrepps, I will now be working as a mobile therapist in Cromer, Sheringham, Overstrand, Mundesley, Holt and North Walsham.

My therapies include holistic massage, aromatherapy, reflexology and manual lymph drainage (MLD), including compression bandaging and limb measuring for compression garments.

MLD is an extremely relaxing therapy, which affects the nervous system with direct analgesic (pain relieving) and stress relieving effects. MLD treatments are advised for pre and post-operative surgery, in particular facial surgery and liposuction, to improve healing and reduce the recovery time following surgery. Treatments help reduce fluid retention, swelling and puffiness, as well as inflammation and bruising. MLD is also treatment for lymphoedema and lipoedema and a variety of other conditions including constipation, IBS, migraine and sleep deprivation. MLD facials (nonsurgical facelifts) are extremely relaxing, reducing dark circles, puffiness and sinusitis problems.

Cromer Nalu Bead Competition! Over the Easter Holidays Wet Dog in Cromer, together with ‘The Original Surf Bead’ company Nalu Beads, ran a competition to design a special Nalu Bead for Cromer! Nalu beads are inspired by surf spots from the UK, Europe, and worldwide. Sometimes it’s the colours - the sky, the sea, the coastline that haracterise a break or a beach, sometimes it’s the feel or the mood of a place. Wet Dog owner Phil Weston says ‘We were overwhelmed by the response to this competition and by the standard of the entries’. ‘We wanted to create an amazing bead that was unique to Cromer, and seeing how people had thought about what Cromer meant to them and then transferring that visually, was just amazing’. ‘We all have different takes on things, and to some, the representation of Cromer was the cliffs, others the sea, the pier, and obviously crabs came into it a lot as well’.

I look forward to meeting you soon. Karen Modle (Registered Therapist MLDUK)

‘The choice of colours used across the entries was varied too, as they took in the mood of the area, blues, greys, yellows, browns and oranges, all having relevance’.

Sales and Marketing Manager of Nalu Beads Rhiannon Davis was really impressed with the top five selected entries. ‘We loved all five designs as they all represented Cromer really well, but the winning design was also the best for working in glass, as well as fitting nicely into the rest of the UK bead range’ So, the overall winner was 11 year old Juliet Price Thomas of Cromer whose design incorporated, the sea, the sun, surfing and the famous Cromer crabs. Not only will Juliet’s bead be produced in time for the summer season but she also receives the first prize of £100 worth of Nalu Beads. Rhiannon added ‘Although Juliet’s bead was the overall winner we thought the other four were amazing too so have provided a prize for each of them also’.

Phil and Kay of Wet Dog would like to thank everyone who took part in the competition for supporting it with such passion. Cromer truly is an inspirational place.

East Coast Seafood Dinner Winner

A local family correctly guessed how many oil filters the East Coast Motor Company had packed into a crab pot at the Crab and Lobster Festival. The correct amount was 109, and Mrs Bushell’s answer was the closest!

The seafood meal voucher, for Boltons Bistro, was presented to the Bushell family by Adam Rounce, Managing Director of the East Coast Motor Company. Mr Rounce said the weekend went very well and was a very well run event, even the weather behaved. This is the first time the East Coast Motor Company has supported the event and they met lots of new people as well as many familiar faces. The crab pot was kindly loaned to the garage by local fisherman, John Davies.

Flags out for North Norfolk beaches as they are awarded for being among best in the country! Keep Britain Tidy has announced the winners of this year’s Blue Flag and Seaside Awards and once again, North Norfolk’s beaches are the place to be.

Flying the flag for North Norfolk’s seaside resorts this year are Sheringham, Cromer, Mundesley and Sea Palling. All four are continuing the standard of excellence that was recognised with the awards of Blue Flag status last year. North Norfolk District Council is celebrating an extra award this year. Alongside East Runton beach, which has been awarded a Seaside Award for the second year running, Wells-next-the-Sea beach has won the coveted award for the first time. The Seaside Award is in recognition of high standards of beach management.

Each award-winning North Norfolk beach has scooped the awards based on offering visitors great facilities, a litter free and safe environment and, in the case of the Blue Flag awards, meeting the highest international water quality requirements.

England can now boast more Blue Flag Awardwinning beaches than Cyprus or Mexico and now ranks in the Top Ten in the world for beaches that meet the very high standards set for the award. Both the Blue Flag and Seaside Awards are the quality marks for our beaches and mean those visiting them can be sure that they are clean and safe and meet the highest environmental standards, as well the tough bathing water quality standards.

North Norfolk District Council Leader, Tom FitzPatrick, said “We are absolutely delighted that four of North Norfolk’s Blue Flag resort beaches have retained their awards this year and it is fantastic news that Wells-next-the-Sea has joined East Runton as a Seaside Award-winning beach for the first time. We are immensely proud of our coastal resorts and these awards are testament to the hard work that goes on to ensure that North Norfolk beaches are among the best beaches in the country and allows us to keep the Blue Flags flying. are a wonderful place for both residents and visitors to enjoy; they put North Norfolk firmly on the map as a first-class visitor destination.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Coastal Award manager Paul Todd said “As an environmental charity, Keep Britain Tidy is committed to improving the quality of the places where people live, work and holiday and these winners have proved their commitment to providing the best possible beaches for locals and visitors alike. The public can be sure, if they visit a Blue Flag or Seaside Award winning beach, that they are visiting one of the best beaches in the world. “The fact that 140 beaches will be flying a Blue Flag or Seaside Award this summer is testament to the hard work of beach managers up and down the country. They understand that great beaches are good for the communities they serve, good for visitors and, therefore, good for the economy, as more visitors means more money going into our coastal resorts.”

which runs at Sheringham Little Theatre from 17 - 20 June. Tickets are available from the Theatre Box Office. The play follows on from their very successful spring production, and is set in the peaceful country house of the late lamented Bernard, brother to Chief Constable Henry Potterton and his sister, Sarah. When they arrive at the house, they are astonished to find several scantily clad ladies wandering about, not knowing that during Bernard's temporary absence on a religious commune in the Orkneys, his housekeeper, Nora Winthrop, has turned the place into ‘a house of sin’.

As Nora is not expecting a visit from the Constable, and is fearful of the questions he will ask, she hastily tries to hide the truth from him. This leads to many hilarious comings and goings involving one of her clients who is dressed as a vicar, a window cleaner in a laundrette basket and a meek solicitor on horseback - not to mention the aforementioned scantily clad ladies. When Bernard also turns up from the Orkneys (or from heaven?) and it is seen that he and Henry are identical twins, the household is thrown into further confusion and chaos leading to an unexpected climax. The play directed by Tim Travers, promises to be great evening’s entertainment filled with a wonderful blend of comedy, drama, misunderstandings, mix - ups, mayhem and surprises.

ALL AMERICAN AT MANNINGTON HALL

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are going all American this July with two exciting events in north Norfolk. On Saturday 4 July, Independence Day, they have a Garden Party at Mannington Hall by kind invitation of Lord and Lady Walpole. The grounds will be open from 2pm to 5pm for you to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Mannington Gardens. Tea and cake will be provided. There will be music throughout the afternoon. The choir will sing on two occasions and there will be incidental piano music from Geoff Cummings-Knight all with an Americana flavour as befits the day. Almost certainly the choir will provide one or two “tasters” to come from their Summer Americana Gala concert at the Auden Theatre the following weekend, Sunday 12 July at 6.30pm. This concert will provide a sumptuous tour of 20th Century American music ranging from Negro Spirituals from Michael Tippet’s A Child of our Time to Samuel Barber’s Agnus Dei (choral version of his famous Adagio) and lots of lovely George Gershwin songs including excerpts from Porgy and Bess and popular standards such as I got rhythm and Someone to Watch over me. And the orchestra will play the Largo from Dvorak’s New World Symphony. It has become something of a tradition for SCCS summer gala concerts to include an extended interval so that performers and audience can enjoy a picnic on the lawns outside the theatre. What better way to spend a summer Sunday evening?! Wine (by the glass or bottle) will be available from the bar. Local businesses come together for the Nelson’s Journey Smiles Awards Over 170 people from 25 local businesses attended the inaugural Nelsons Journey Smiles Awards, last month at Sprowston Manor. The awards ceremony, which recognised the contribution ofthe local corporate community to the work of the charity, crowned winners in 8 categories, from 23 nominees, with one ‘Overall Impact Award’ winner being chosen from all those nominated. The BBC’s David Whiteley presided over the awards, which were announced and handed over by members of Nelson’s Journey’s Youth Panel, a group of young volunteers, many of

whom have used a service from the child bereavement charity. The judges of the awards included last year’s High Sheriff of Norfolk, Lady Pippa Dannatt and former HM Coroner for Norfolk, Bill Armstrong OBE.

Winners on the night included Aviva for the ‘Employee Contribution Award’, sponsored by East of England Co-op, recognising the support that their employees give to the charity, everything from bake sales and helping with making resources, to offering a team of employees to help as ‘muscle’ during the move to Smiles House.

The husband and wife team Pippa and Mark Redmond at Norwich Print Solutions were awarded the ‘Major Sponsor Recognition Award’, sponsored by Almary Green and Smith & Pinching, for their work with the Nelson’s Journey Christmas Quiz, which has raised nearly £20,000 in three years. The judges felt that “for a small company to make such a massive and dedicated commitment to Nelson’s Journey over three years has to be commended.”

Overall winners on the night were Ashton KCJ who won the ‘Overall Impact Award’, sponsored by Ruth Elizabeth Events Ltd. This recognises the long-term commitment that the solicitors firm gave the charity by providing a ‘home’ for them within their Meridian Business Park offices. This

saved Nelson’s Journey around £80,000 over the four years they spent at the firm. The judges commented that “Ashton KCJ provided a very considerable benefit in kind, never wavered from their support, despite the length of Nelson’s Journey’s tenure with them and the fact that staff members increased from five to 13, which is truly admirable.”

Gena Moore, Corporate Funding and Marketing Officer from Nelson’s Journey explained why the event was so important “It was brilliant to have business supporters, old and new, all in one place to be thanked and recognised by the charity. There was such a buzz all night long and all the guests were so generous. It was a real celebration and we thank everyone who was involved, especially the event’s sponsors. Each year we receive more and more support from local companies, and last year we saw over £115,000 raised from the business community in Norfolk. In addition to this we also had support through employee volunteering and donations of resources and services, saving us even more money. This backing is invaluable in allowing us to help the growing numbers of children and young people who are referred to us each year for bereavement support.”

Liz Underdown - The Heart of the Band

Liz Underdown is the familiar face at the heart of the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band and its sister ensemble, The Norfolk Jazz Quartet. Her musical pedigree extends far beyond playing bass in the rhythm section of jazz bands however and, through her teaching, is able to develop and encourage many young and not so young musicians.

Liz started to play trumpet when she was eight years old and moved on to double bass following a demonstration at her school when she was ten. She thought it was an “unusual but cool instrument”. She was recruited to the Bromley Youth Chamber and Symphony Orchestra to play bass, which led to her playing at The Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Festival Hall and touring Austria and Spain. After leaving school, she gained a B.A. Hons. Degree in music from Exeter University and she is now a full-time school music teacher. Liz also plays piano, and is known to have the occasional burst on the ukulele. Not very many people know that!

Liz is increasing her private teaching and if you think that she might be able to help you learn and develop as a musician you can contact her on 01692 630927. Alternatively, you can visit The Goat Inn, Skeyton, and have a chat with her on the afternoon of the first Sunday every month when she plays at the venue with the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Since the last issue, several cats that had gone missing in the area have been reunited with their owners, primarily because they were micro chipped. In one instance, one of the cats re-homed by us had been missing for several years and you may have read about this in the local press. Another, unbeknown to his owner, had taken up residence under her car and ran off when she stopped at traffic lights. This was another instance, where it was possible to reunite cat with owner, because he was chipped. We were also able to confirm that another runaway was indeed one recently re-homed by us who had escaped while her owner was fitting a cat flap.

Several other cats have been posted as missing on the face book pages of local vets and it has been a relief to see that these too have been found. It increases the odds of finding your cat if you do get it chipped (the vets very often have special deals for this) and then, should it go missing, advise your neighbour(s), the local vets, Animal Rescue websites (we have a link to one on the Lost and Found page on our website) and even post it on face book. These are good ways to achieve a successful outcome.

Because Cats Protection see so many unwanted kittens each year, our head office is working with the Pet Advertising Advisory Group to try and identify where cats are used to repeatedly breed kittens for 30

commercial gain. They are also concerned at the number of adverts that go online offering kittens, usually for sale for a lot of money, that are for instance “part Persian” or “part Bengal” as when you look at the photo you can only see a sweet little moggie. They are at present talking with volunteers across the country to trying Tookey, one of the older girls to find where this is happening and in care intend to use the information to protect the cats and prevent poorly kittens being bred. They will be sharing this information with government to hopefully introduce changes in the law to prevent this. Over the years some of the mums and kittens that have arrived in our care have not been well looked after, so we welcome this initiative and hope they succeed in their aims. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special campaign mentioned in the last article.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. THE STRAND CLUB

of a white one the parents will either eat it or throw it out of the nest. Nature can be cruel. The fifth bird was Bracken, a little tawny owl and the only type to actually say ‘too whit too whoo’. Sandra told us the story she tells children about their call - the girl owl says to the boy owl, "twit!" and he replies "who?"

Our May meeting began with difficulty, as we were trying to concentrate on the business side of things while Sandra brought in her owls in their travelling crates and set them up on their perches at the back of the hall.

Heads turned and eyes watched - ours and those of the owls! However, we managed to agree an innovation - that from now on we will be very happy to accept men as full members. We have, in the past, often greeted them as visitors but we have decided to make it official!

Hayes + Storr – All you’ll ever need!

We were given a really delightful talk about the owls and how she reared them. They were calm and friendly and anyone who wanted to, was able to have them perched on their hand whilst wearing a large gauntlet. They were surprisingly light, even big Fern, and so beautifully soft to stroke.

We were delighted to welcome Jane back to the club after her health scare, now resolved. There were several visitors today, brought in I am sure by James Begley's posters around the village.

It was a wonderful, unusual and happy afternoon, much enjoyed by everyone. Sandra was a great speaker and obviously loves and cares for her birds very much. Our meeting concluded with the raffle draw, which was won, we are delighted to say, by Tony, a new member, and one of our visitors who had come all the way from Hemsby.

Sandra then introduced her five charges. We met Mumbles, a Chaco owl, so called because she talks all the time in a funny grumbly squeak - she had beautiful spotty markings. Fern, the Asian Wood Owl, was a favourite. Larger than the others and with the most amazing tan and black patterns on his feathers, he was just splendid despite his rather soppy name! He was found to be a boy after he had already been named and was then used to it! There were two barn owls - a white and a black. Spirit, the white one was the normal colour and Dusk was a mutant. Sandra has two white barn owls, the second one being called Phantom and she commented that as they look so ghostly when they fly she has given them appropriate names. The little black one was gorgeous - so sad that if an egg is hatched with a grey chick instead

Our next meeting is not a meeting at all, but our outing to Langham Glass. We meet outside the old post office in Overstrand at 12 noon. We have some spare places on our coach so if you would like to join us please phone Josie on 579748. We shall need to have the £15 and lunch choices in plenty of time before we go and Josie will be able to give you further details.

Call Sheringham – 01263 825959 www.hayesandstorr.co.uk law.sheringham@hayes-storr.com your grandchildren's pets - funny ones please! They will be pinned up, judged and narrowed down to 12 which will be used to create a Strand Club calendar. This will then be sold to raise funds. Visitors are always welcome at our meetings, so do get in touch with either Glo on 576539 or Chris on 579433 for more information.

Council to seek views on public open space disposal at Cabbell Park North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is opening a formal consultation to seek public views regarding the proposed lifting of the open space restriction which currently exists at its Cabbell Park site in Cromer. The consultation follows the unveiling of detailed plans by the Cromer Group Practice and their development partner, MedCentres for a new surgery at the Cabbell Park site.

Leader of North Norfolk District Council, Tom FitzPatrick, said “The Council is wholly supportive of the provision of new primary care facilities in Cromer and recognises that Cromer Group Practice has outgrown its existing Overstrand Road surgery and that a new facility would be of huge benefit to existing patients and future population growth in the area served by the practice. “Our seeking of views concerning the lifting of the open space restriction is the next step towards a development that would see significant investment in improving primary care facilities while securing money from any resulting sale which will go on to be committed towards the provision of a muchneeded new community sports facility for the

people of Cromer.

The Practice has been supported by the Council’s Planning Policy Team to help identify sites well-related to the town which could potentially accommodate a new surgery facility with key criteria such as size, accessibility and value for money all considered.

Despite extensive consideration of these requirements, few sites within the established boundaries of the town were deemed suitable and on this basis, the Cabbell Park site is now being further explored. Any proposals for development of a new facility on the site will be considered through the Council’s statutory planning process which will involve further public consultation.

The Council would seek to use monies from any sale of the site to support the provision of new community sports facilities for the people of Cromer. Long-term, better equipped and more modern facilities would give local clubs the ability to expand and encourage greater participation in sport. Such a facility would also allow for the designation of open space, thus meeting the original bequest of Mrs. B E Bond Cabbell. A consultation exercise has garnered public views on four sites, the outcome of which will be discussed by the Council’s Cabinet on 8 June 2015.

are explored. In the longer term, any proposed development of the balance of the Cabbell Park site would be a matter for Cabinet consideration in conjunction with the programmed review of the North Norfolk Local Plan and again, would involve further public consultation. A plan showing the Cabbell Park site can be inspected at North Norfolk District Council’s offices at Holt Road, Cromer during normal office hours and on its website at www.northnorfolk.org

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club Tales from the Bowling Green ...

…where it has been excellent for the club tosee so man yof the new members joining in the morning roll ups and playing in friendly matches. Although Edna has written to all these ‘newbies’ I am delighted to welcome John, Philip, Andrew, Keith, Brenda, Michael, Geoff, Jean, Neil, Gerald, Julie, Jean, Russell, Derek and Lionel. The last named I think is a ‘Ringer’. Playing his first roll up using set a bowls that had been given to him he had more bowls closer to the jack than all of the other five players on the rink. Excellent start. We continue to encourage these new members to join in the weekend Spoon Drives. It is a really good way to improve play and meet even more club members. The club is also open Friday evenings from 6pm for social interaction, with maybe a roll up followed by a drink or packet of crisps at the bar.

Now let’s review the leagues … In the Hansells League following a good first game away against R G Carters, at home against Cawston an even better result with a 5 – 0 win. Next, away against County Arts ‘C’ in Norwich the team could not keep up the good work and lost 1 – 4.

The Bales Cup game against Reepham Private was also a bad result. After 10 out of 21 ends the game was ‘all square’, same number of shots both sides. However it all went downhill thereafter and Reepham ran out winners on all three rinks. The Federation County League team had a free week but then entertained Lakeside BC. This was a good result with a 6 – 3 win.

The NANSA afternoon team started their season with an excellent 6 – 2 win at home against Sheringham Morley Tigers.

The game against Overstrand was cancelled because the Overstrand green was waterlogged! Two visiting teams have been entertained Halls BC from Dartford in Kent and Kings Lynn BC, both teams bringing a coach with many spectators as well as bowlers who explored the town, spent time in cafes and gift shops, benefitting the town, before returning to the club for the game.

I note from the last edition that I showed the time of the game against Norfolk Bowling Club as 10.00pm. I hope nobody turned up that evening. Firstly because the time was wrong and secondly because since

the list was printed the game had been cancelled!! Sorry folks. Our number of games at home is limited in the next two weeks as the club are away visiting Hunstanton in a friendly game. There is a blank Wednesday evening in the Hansells league due to a team having withdrawn.
