Blue Plaques honour Cromer Lifeboat Legends

Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

Three legendary Cromer RNLI Coxswains were honoured on Saturday 13 June.

The humble houses they had lived in had distinctive blue plaques erected on the outside of the buildings. Cromer’s association with the RNLI and its history of lifeboats, is full of stories of bravery and seamanship and the Town Council, along with other interested parties, were keen to recognise this. The plaques were unveiled in honour of Henry Blogg, Henry ‘Shrimp’ Davies and Lewis ‘Tuna’ Harrison by members of their families. These three men had many years of service to the RNLI. Henry Blogg was born in 1876 and died in 1954 and was coxswain from 1909 to 1947. He was followed as coxswain by Henry ‘Shrimp’ Davies, the nephew of Henry Blogg (born in 1914 and died in 2002) in 1947, who served as coxswain until 1976. (He got his nickname from his size as a youngster).

Life Membership for Chairman of Cromer Lawn Tennis & Squash Club

An award giving Nick Amis life membership of Norfolk Lawn Tennis Association was presented by Richard Palmer, President of Norfolk LTA, at Lime Tree Road on Monday 8 June. Tony Spurgeon, who has known and played tennis with Nick for 60+ years, gave the following short profile on him.

"Nick has been playing tennis at Cromer since 1953 when he was 11 years old, both on the indoor courts at the former Newhaven Court Hotel and at Norwich Road courts, and has been Chairman of Cromer Lawn Tennis & Squash Association since 2003. Dear Margaret,

Since 2006 I have been assisting a teacher of a Polish High School to bring a small group of her pupils to Cromer each July for a two week summer holiday. The purpose of the visit is two-fold – to enable the students to have a holiday by the sea and to practise their spoken English.

Sell your home with the award winning team Our customers have voted us the best estate agents in the east of England for two years running. So you can be confident in our team’s ability to present your property and negotiate the best price.

The sad news is that, in 2015, the pattern has been broken and no students will be enjoying our hospitality and improving their language skills this year. The reason he visit has had to be cancelled this summer is simple – not enough host families!

The teenage students are normally accommodated with families in Cromer and a payment is made to the host family to cover their costs. There is a programme of instruction for the students and, on weekdays, the students are fully occupied from 9am until teatime each day. Hosts do not need to have any knowledge of the Polish language.

The Polish teacher concerned, Mrs M Strazia, is visiting Cromer in early July to try to recruit some additional hosts to ensure that in 2016 the course may continue. She will personally be available to speak to anyone interested in becoming a host. In the meantime, although I am not mow directly involved with the organisation, should you wish to know more about this worthwhile project I would be more than happy to explain things more fully. I can be contacted on 01263 512692.

Our speaker for June was Icarus Hines. His talk was entitled ‘High Street Butchers in the Modern World’ and was enjoyed by everyone.

Icarus told us of his life as a butcher and how it has changed over the years, especially with all the new rules and regulations that have come into force.

We saw a variety of the famous calendars that have been printed over the years and heard of the exploits of ‘George’, our own Cromer character. We were shown the chain that Icarus wears in the position of Chairman of the Norwich and District Master Butchers and he told us of some of the events that they do for the local community. After tea we had a report from our delegate, Jane Bothwell, who went to 12

the Centenary of the WI at their Annual Meeting in the Royal Albert Hall. It was a wonderful occasion in the presence of the Queen, the Princess Royal and the Countess of Essex. The vote for our resolution for Care in the Community was deferred due to changes required to the wording.

Seventeen members were going to the theatre at the Assemble Rooms on Saturday to see a play ‘A Time to Kill’. Final details were given out for the visit to Gressenhall in July. The competition for an unusual kitchen implement was won by Yvonne Mileham, with Jill Betz second and Judy Roberts third.

Our Speaker in July will be Pamela Sadler and her talk is Pam Ayres and others. There will be a small birthday tea as it is our Birthday Month. We do not have a meeting in August.

New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

Holkham Celebrates Anniversary of Signing of the Magna Carta

The Historic Houses Association’s (HHA) member houses, including Holkham Hall, are hosting special events this year to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta.

Holistic Health Therapies

Hi, I’m Karen. I have recently moved to Norfolk from London where I have been working as an ITEC and Vodder trained registered therapist for 15 years. Based in Northrepps, I will now be working as a mobile therapist in Cromer, Sheringham, Overstrand, Mundesley, Holt and North Walsham.

You are invited to follow in the footsteps of families who have played a pivotal role in paving the way for the rights we enjoy today. Sir Edward Coke Holkham Hall will be holding an exhibition on the role of Sir Edward Coke, one of England’s foremost jurists, and founder of the family fortunes for his Coke descendants, later the Earls of Leicester, at Holkham. His reinterpretation and use of Magna Carta helped to limit the powers of the Stuart kings and, when opposing them, he used Magna Carta to help draw up The Petition of Rights. The exhibition will include some of his manuscripts and books from the Library and Archives, demonstrating the crucial importance that he attached to Magna Carta.

My therapies include holistic massage, aromatherapy, reflexology and manual lymph drainage (MLD), including compression bandaging and limb measuring for compression garments.

MLD is an extremely relaxing therapy, which affects the nervous system with direct analgesic (pain relieving) and stress relieving effects. MLD treatments are advised for pre and post-operative surgery, in particular facial surgery and liposuction, to improve healing and reduce the recovery time following surgery. Treatments help reduce fluid retention, swelling and puffiness, as well as inflammation and bruising. MLD is also treatment for lymphoedema and lipoedema and a variety of other conditions including constipation, IBS, migraine and sleep deprivation. MLD facials (non-surgical facelifts) are extremely relaxing, reducing dark circles, puffiness and sinusitis problems.

In 1628, as a precondition to granting any future taxes, parliament forced King Charles I to assent to The Petition of Rights. This asked for a settlement of parliament’s complaints against the King’s nonparliamentary taxation and imprisonments without trial, plus the unlawfulness of martial law and forced billets.

More than 100 years later, the cry at the Boston Tea Party of “no taxation without representation” highlighted one of the major grievances of the American colonies and so provides a direct link back to Sir Edward Coke’s interpretation of Clause 12 of Magna Carta from the original 1215 manuscript.

Holistic therapies have great physiological and psychological benefits. To book treatments and for information please contact me directly on 07583 973050 or via my website www.holistichealththerapies.co.uk or via www.mlduk.org.uk.

Holkham’s exhibition will run from 14 June to 29 October. It is part of the nationwide event, LiberTeas, where we take tea to celebrate the role of Magna Carta in protecting our liberties.

I look forward to meeting you soon. Karen Modle (Registered Therapist MLDUK)

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

While we have had some kittens come into care this year, their numbers have been less than normal. We do, however, have several more litters waiting to come in once they are old enough to leave their mothers, who are often then neutered with help from the branch. The kittens will have a health check at the vets and be chipped and vaccinated at our expense, before going to a new home. When we take the kittens into care we are always happy to help their owners with the neutering of the mother cats. Unfortunately, not all kittens receive this level of care before finding a new home as, sadly, many are re-homed without any checks being made and the mother cat has litter after litter, which is not much of a life for her.

We recently took in two young cats and a kitten from a household where there were health problems, which meant they could not keep them. While talking to the owner it became clear that he did not realize, until after his young cats became pregnant, that a cat can get pregnant from about 4 months old. We know that a lot of people are not aware of this and, as a consequence, many young cats do get pregnant before they have finished growing themselves. It does indeed stunt their kittens’ growth and they are often smaller than normal and do not thrive so well. The owner wished he had known this as he would have taken action to try and prevent his lovely, well cared for cats, from having kittens.

On 5th July we will be holding the Hog Roast at Dilham once again. Tickets can be obtained via Stephanie on the ‘cat phone’. If you wish to attend please call her as numbers are limited. We also have many other fund raising events in the pipeline including a stall at the Fun Day in North Walsham on 28 June.

Delia, one of our recent arrivals

We enjoyed the drive to Fakenham through the sunny lanes and soon arrived at our destination. Our lunch had been pre-ordered at Cafe Nelson within the complex and they had prepared our table with care. Despite my forgetting to tell them that we would be one extra, they dealt beautifully with this influx of happy Strand Clubbers and their friends and spouses. The food was plentiful and very tasty and they were efficient and friendly.

We had ample time for a wander round the tempting shop and for a cup of tea and a cake before boarding the coach again to come home. The Strand Club would like to extend sincere thanks to Sanders, to the tireless, patient and cheerful staff of Cafe Nelson, and to the kind and helpful receptionist at Langhams who pointed us in the right direction. I know we all enjoyed our day, finding it relaxing and interesting in equal measure.

After lunch, we all wandered in to the foundry and sat enjoying the demonstrations of glass blowing and admiring the amazing skill shown by the men there. They made it look easy - and said it was - but we felt that should we have given it a try the tiny red fox and the pot pourri bowl with its intricate patterns inside would have been wonky and weird!

Chrystal Howes, senior practitioner for Seaview Pre-school commented “This has been a really fantastic opportunity to work with Watsons Property, the children were very excited about decorating the ship’s wheel. We needed to consider our very young age group of 2-4yrs, so it all started with the children sticking coloured pieces of paper all over the wheel and then each child created their own butterfly with their face on it, and these were all then stuck on too. We are very proud of how it has turned out and we really did have a wonderful time creating it. With the help of donations from parents we are really hoping we will be able to bid and win the wheel back for our school.

When the trail finishes, all the wheels around Cromer will be auctioned off with all funds raised being donated to local charities & organisations.

St Andrews Methodist Church Flower Festival

The annual flower festival of St Andrews Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham takes place from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 July. The festivals have been running for over 40 years and over the years they have grown significantly in both quality of exhibits, size and attendance, to become arguably the best festival in Norfolk.

Last year the festival attracted well over 3000 visitors with several coach parties visiting this truly remarkable event. A total of over £13,500 was raised for church funds with a sizeable donation given to Sheringham Woodfields School. This year we will be giving donations to both Sheringham Woodfields School and Sheringham Playpark Revamp Project. Every year the floral arrangements of the festivalare designed to a specific theme. Last year’s theme was ‘Journeys and Adventures’ and our photos from the festival give a flavour of the quality of the exhibitions and the attention to detail the designers take in covering their subject. The first depicts a journey across the wilderness before reaching a beautiful oasis and the second a journey across the Antarctic.

Entry to the Festival is free, the money being raised totally from donations and from proceeds of catering and from the many varied stalls run by church members. Examples of these stalls include plants, jigsaws, books, arts & crafts, souvenirs and gifts, jewellery, stained glass art, Christian bookstall, Traidcraft stall, quality bric-a-brac, a raffle, quality cards and various quizzes. Cromer & Sheringham Probus Club

The Probus Club of Cromer and Sheringham held its AGM at The Links Hotel, West Runton on Tuesday, 2 June and, after the usual formal business, the outgoing Chairman, Geoff Mather, handed over the Chain of Office to Ron Coleman for the ensuing year.

Dave Vickery then made a presentation on behalf of Club members to John Bolton-Maggs on the occasion of his last Probus meeting after 32 years of membership, to which the latter responded with a short and amusing valedictory speech.

The Cromer and Sheringham Club is open to all retired and nearly retired business and professional men, and if you are thinking of giving us a try, here are a few things to bear in mind: • You will NOT be expected to raise / collect / donate money to causes - we don't do that sort of thing. • All our subscriptions remain for use within our club - we don't pay any fees to any Probus organisation. • You will hear a series of speakers on a variety of topics. • You will be served a high quality lunch at a very reasonable fixed price at each monthly meeting. • You will meet a friendly and sociable group of men in a relaxed environment.

Please have a look at our website, www.candsprobus.club for the latest information or call Dave Vickery (Lunch Secretary) on 01263 824306.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER

PAINTING PARADISE: THE ART OF THE GARDEN

became a green-fingered nation and the informal cottage gardens of both royal and commoner alike became the backdrops of family life.

A host of artistically significant works help to illustrate this chronology. There are botanical drawings by Leonardo; a Rembrandt painting that depicts the newly risen Christ as a gardener complete with sunhat and spade and pruning knife; Gainsborough presents the Duke of Cumberland and his wife parading elegantly through a sylvan haven. The designers of Sevres porcelain play with a fanciful host of floral patterns, while Faberge captures the lily of the valley flower heads in delicate sprays of gilded pearls.

A trip to London to visit the Chelsea Flower Show gave me the opportunity to see the changing of the guard and an excellent ‘gardening’ exhibition in the Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace.

The exhibition draws on the many riches of the Royal Collection, bringing together a wide selection of treasures – primarily paintings and drawings but with manuscripts, tapestries, furniture, porcelain, jewellery and even the tiny wheelbarrow and gardening tools used by Queen Victoria as a child.

Whether you are interested in the way they placed cloches in the 18th century, the political influence of the pineapple or the history of knot garden patterns this is an informative and fascinating show and it even includes a mention for North Norfolk. A manuscript presented to Queen Alexandra, which contains Francis Bacon’s classic garden essay (‘God Almighty first planted a Garden and indeed, it is the purest of human pleasures. It is the greatest refreshment to the spirits of man’ etc) is accompanied by a painting of a floral border at Sandringham.

(The exhibition is at the Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace until October 11). Bob Wilkinson

The exhibition divides the history of the garden into broad chronological sections including the splendour of the Renaissance garden with its sophistication and formality and its fascination with labyrinths and topiary, knot gardens and obelisks. It speaks of an age when the garden first became a royal status symbol.

Then there are the botanic gardens which flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries, as ships returned from the West Indies, North America and the East, laden with new species, both eye-catchingly beautiful and medicinally useful and also the great baroque gardens with their parterres and box hedges, their treeflanked walkways and canal-fed fountains all laid out on a previously unimaginable scale.

This was followed by the horticultural profusions of the 19th century, when England

Cromer and District Garden Society Gardeners have to put up with many situations over which they have little or no control, the most obvious of which is, of course, the weather. Having just seen the back of May when sunshine, rainfall and temperatures were well below average it was nice to hear from the speaker at our May meeting on an aspect of gardening that is as reliable as anything can be, namely plants for shady areas of the garden. Jim Paine is from Walnut Tree Nursery near Attleborough, a place certainly worth a visit if you are in that part of the county. Members from the society have called in at the nursery on two occasions recently when we have been on outings in the south of the county and both visits were well worth it. Mr Paine saw shade in the garden as an opportunity not a problem and came

course, as conditions vary depending on time of year. In spring when trees are not in leaf and there may be more rainfall conditions are much different from midsummer for instance. Some shady areas may be very dry, others may only have partial shade (i.e. up to six hours of sun) while others may be permanently in light shade. Improving the soil is vital whatever the situation. Hydrangea, mahonia, viburnum and cyclamen can be successfully grown if the right variety is chosen. Pulmonaria sambucus “Black Beauty” was recommended for areas of light shade as was the evergreen vinca “Ralph Schubert”. Solomon seal, many types of euphorbia and the foxglove “Illumination” are worth trying as well.

Twenty five members went on an outing to Fairhaven Water Gardens on what proved to be a rather thundery afternoon but it was very enjoyable nevertheless. On the way back we stopped off at the nursery and garden centre at Moulton St Mary near Acle to stock up on plants for the garden. No one came away empty handed! The annual quiz between the societies in Cromer, Sheringham and this year’s hosts Hoveton/ Wroxham took place at the beginning of June. A total of eight teams took part and a four representing Sheringham won. Our thanks to our friends at Hoveton/Wroxham for organising a very enjoyable evening. We are hosts next year and will try hard to bring the winner’s cup back to Cromer.

Our members’ summer show had a disappointingly low number of entries unfortunately but thanks must go to those who did enter. Jennifer Andrews won best in show for a display of lupins. Our president, Bill LeGrice, was the judge.

Our next meeting is on Diana O’Shea’s arrangement of roses Wednesday 8 July at 7.30pm in Cromer Community Hall. Angela Youngman will be speaking on “Recycling in the Garden”. It promises to be an interesting evening before we have our short summer break. Visitors are always welcome. Cost £2.

Orchestras Live North Norfolk

This year, North Norfolk is again hosting Orchestras Live North Norfolk, a series of the highest quality orchestral concerts developed by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) in partnership with Orchestras Live and community organisations.

The concerts will be taking place in Ludham in July, Trunch in October and Cromer in November.

The series begins on Wednesday 15 July by welcoming back the internationally acclaimed European Union Chamber Orchestra (EUOC) to the beautiful village of Ludham. For a contrasting and enthralling evening, don’t miss Warlock’s captivating Capriol Suite and the eloquent interpretation of stunning classics by Mozart and Haydn, as well as the performance of a specially-commissioned orchestral piece by local composer Jane Wells combining talented young instrumentalists with the EUCO professionals.

With the exceptional acoustics of St Botolph’s Church in Trunch, audiences on Saturday 10 October will be left spellbound by the world class wind soloists from Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment performing an evening of masterpieces by Mozart and Myslivecek.

The series concludes on Saturday 28 November at Cromer Parish Church with the much anticipated return of the exceptionally talented London Mozart Players, this year performing with Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society. A finale guaranteed to be an exciting evening of 20th century classics including the beautiful Vespers by Norfolk-based composer Richard Allain, showcasing north Norfolk’s most illustrious choral tones. 22

CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS - REVIEW ALEXANDER SOARES (PIANO) Templewood, Northrepps

Cromer Music Evenings invited Alexander Soares as the artist to perform in this last concert of the 2014/15 season - as they did way back in May 2011, again to perform in the last concert of the 2010/11 season. During the four years it is obvious that this young artist will have matured in the performance of the classical composers as he has in interpretations of the contemporary writings of the impressionistic composers. Today Beethoven’s Sonata Op.81a Les Adieux,

was the first piece in the programme and what a magical performance - truly magnificent. I imagined Beethoven, who was not always in a good mood - would have been delighted with the depth of understanding in the interpretation - I am sure if Alfred Brendel had listened to this performance he would have been extremely impressed! Liszt’s Benediction de Dieu dans la Solitude (the blessing of God in solitude), being a typical example of Liszt flourishing style with a beautiful melody in the bass with myriads of broken chords in the treble, was played with consummate ease, engaging the truly masterful technique of this young artist. Here the audience was given a master class regarding the demands in Liszt’s writings for piano, encapsulating power superb tone gradations, delicious pianissimo playing in the upper register of the Yamaha piano. Here the delicacy of touch was perfectly balanced. After the interval, two unmeasured Preludes in G minor and A minor by Jean-Henri d’ Anglebert and Elizabeth Claude Jacquet de La Guerre - these two pieces in Baroque style gave licence to the performer to improvise ad lib extending the composition, therefore unmeasured! Three more pieces in similar style by Pancrace Royer and Jean-Philippe Rameau, where embellishments were in nearly every bar, became an experience of crystal clarity and perfect articulation. Chopin’s Polonaise-Fantaisie Op. 61 was a performance of the highest standard, where

Soares, after playing the gentle intricacies of Baroque writings to the romantic style of Chopin was awe inspiring.

French composer Dutilleux’s Choral et Variations, the last item on the programme - this piece with its exciting rhythms especially in the bass - full of dissonant sounds really gave the listener in some cases to hear sounds never experienced before! This performance confirmed why this young man is in such great demand as a performer of the highest calibre. Terry Keeler

In Norfolk we are lucky to have a wealth of industry right on our door step and KLM Engineering, British Sugar, Seajacks, BAE Systems, and OPITOY oil and gas industry plus many more have agreed to attend the event. Norwich is the 4th largest contributor to medical research in the country after London, Manchester and Birmingham and with Norwich Research Park attending the event, alongside a number of Science and Technology stands, it will be a good event for those interested in science.

In addition to this the Army, RAF and Navy will be attending to answer questions about careers in the forces. Apprenticeship Norfolk will also display information on careers and give out advice on apprenticeship opportunities in the local area.

Mark Bruhin the Founder and Director Beacon East Careers said ''The North East Norfolk Futures Event is now in its third year and it is set to be even bigger and better this year. Young people have difficult life decisions to make and this event is an excellent way to support careers advice in local schools and colleges. This event will provide students with a great opportunity to meet people from colleges, universities, apprenticeship providers and employers.”

NATIONAL GOLD VAULTS EVIE INTO GB SQUAD

A young gymnast from Norfolk has been selected to represent Great Britain in the World Downs Syndrome Gymnastics Championship in Milan in November.

Evie Rodwell, already an established athlete with Special Olympics Norfolk, booked her place in the national squad with an outstanding performance in the recent National Downs Syndrome Championship in Leicester.

She now needs to raise £2500 to compete in Milan where she will be coming up against athletes from ten other nations including the USA, Russia, South Africa and Mexico.

Evie's mum Jo, a volunteer with Special

Olympics Norfolk, is spearheading the fundraising campaign and commented "We are so proud of what Evie has achieved and she came back from Leicester weighed down with medals and trophies.

"She has now got a national call up however we need to urgently raise sponsorship support from generous local businesses and individuals in order to make the trip to Italy possible and have set up a Just Giving page,”added Jo.

"Despite stiff competition, she won a bronze on the bars, silver on the beam and gold on the vault as well as a trophy for best junior artistic gymnast.

Evie, who turns 13 later this month and lives in Diss, proudly exclaimed "I'm so happy at being chosen for Great Britain and cannot wait for Milan!"

Gresham’s Prep GoGoDragon gets ready for the Schools’ trail

With over a 100 schools taking part in this year’s GoGoDragon Schools’ trail in Norwich, Gresham’s Prep in Holt, hosted a ‘Design the School Dragon’ competition to find the best designs for its own Gresham’s GoGoDragon.

Two Year 8 pupils had their entries selected and together with pupils at the school have recently completed the dragon’s design ready for the exhibition this summer.

Zelia Holmes and Archie Osborne's Grasshopper based on Keith Haring designs were chosen as the winning entries, with Cate May and Elfie Anema-Galpin runners-up in the competition.

Sophie Li-Rocchi, Head of Art at Gresham’s Prep said "It has been very exciting to have our very own GoGoDragon to decorate for the Norwich art trail. It has captured the imagination of the whole school and everyone has enjoyed watching Hopper come to life. The pupils have been inspired with some amazing designs and I am really proud of their creative Cate May, Archie Osborne and efforts and interest. We can't Elfie Anema-Galpin wait to see our dragon on display and look forward to having him return to live with us at the school in September."

Thanks to the Prep School Parents’ Association, a GoGoDragon was purchased for the school earlier this year and work to design the Dragon began this term. Hopper the Dragon is now finally finished, thanks to Zelia, Archie and all the pupils at the school. Hopper will now go on display in Norwich from 4th July until early September 2015. See if you can find him.

Public asked to search for Norfolk’s most endangered buildings

The Victorian Society is asking the public to nominate buildings for its Top Ten most endangered Victorian and Edwardian buildings in England and Wales. Appearing in the Victorian Society’s Top Ten list draws attention to a building's plight and can help save it. Nominations close on Wednesday 1 July.

Individuals, organisations and campaign groups are invited to name the buildings and structures that are most at risk in their local area - whether from demolition, neglect or inappropriate redevelopment. Buildings must have been built between 1837 and 1914. Buildings in the East of England which have previously featured in the Society’s annual Top Ten include the Jumbo Water Tower, Colchester (2013) and Ipswich’s former County Hall (2012) (see attached picture).

Christopher Costelloe, Director of the Victorian Society, said ‘All over the country fine examples of Victorian and Edwardian architecture face neglect, demolition or unsympathetic re-development. We want the public to be our eyes and ears and nominate the Victorian and Edwardian buildings we are most at risk of losing. Whether it’s a school building, an empty pub, a redundant chapel or a neglected but impressive feat of engineering, make sure you tell us about it so we can try to save them.’

To nominate a building contact the Victorian Society via email (media@victoriansociety.org.uk), tweet (@thevicsoc), Facebook (facebook.com/thevicsoc) or post (1 Priory Gardens, London W4 1TT) with brief details of the building(s) on or before Wednesday 1 July 2015.

All the buildings nominated will be considered by the Society's architecture and conservation experts before the 2015 list of the Top Ten Most Endangered Buildings in England and Wales is announced.

Crab & Lobster Festival News! This year’s Crab & Lobster Festival was a super-smashing success, magically supported by superb sunny weather!

The opening concert at the Pier Pavilion Theatre was generously hosted by BBC’s David Whiteley and played to a packed house. The entertainment line-up offered something for everyone - with comedian Pat Nearney, Marlene’s Dancers, My Bad Sister, Backdrafts and The Sheringham Shantymen. We laughed, sang and stomped our feet to a truly superb evening’s entertainment.

The weekend continued in Cromer with top chef’s preparing delectable seafood dishes, market stalls and food samples, live music from The Old Wild Rovers and The Broken Maps, crab sandwiches, Punch & Judy, IFCA giant fishtank, heritage demonstrations, crab dressing, Woodforde’s Bar and Paella Night, with entertainment from the

fabulous Fishwives Choir and Paul Thompson with his Milk Float.

In Sheringham around The Lobster Pub, there was a friendly let-your-hair-down “village fete” atmosphere to attract the crowds with local chefs, ethnic foods, crab dressing demonstrations, Morris dancers, street entertainers, beer, bees, sheep, music, boats, coastguards, Shantymen - and Razz the Clown entertained in both towns! On Sunday, charity walkers & ‘Cromer Walkers are Welcome’ linked the two towns, and there

was a new Crazy Crab Competition from the Pier too!

Record crowds enjoyed the weekend & local accommodation was booked up weeks in advance. Every year, as the Festival has developed, each town has added its own unique character to the event, and it is even more special because we believe this is the only two town Crab & Lobster Festival in Britain! The best news of all... dates for next year’s festival are 21-22 May 2016.

Cromer Pier Show 2015 The Cromer ‘End of the Pier’ show is now the ONLY one of its kind in Europe. A traditional variety show packed full of comedy music, song and dance.

No other Pier Theatre in Europe can boast the same credentials, making The Cromer Pier Show a ‘must see’ experience for all ages. This year sees the return of comedian Paul Eastwood, whose cheeky humour made him a firm favourite with audiences throughout the 2014 season with his quick rapport and natural charm winning him a legion of new fans and great reviews. Paul has had a busy time since

last September and has spent much of the winter cruising with P&O Cruises in the Caribbean but did find time in his schedule to get engaged to his beautiful girlfriend Corea. Also making a welcome return is Ben Langley who first appeared in the 2012 Cromer Pier Show with his very own brand of visual comedy. Earlier this year he made a brief announcement on Facebook “I will be premiering a comedy upside down straight jacket escape while suspended above the audience”. This brief statement has already led to much speculation amongst the fans of the show who are looking forward to seeing Ben suspended above their heads. Making her very first appearance on the stage

Winner

Congratulations to Priscilla Paul of Cromer who was a winner of two tickets to the Summer Show at the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer

of the Pavilion Theatre is one of the country’s top multi-instrumentalists, Rachel King. Her music has taken her around the world and back again. Her versatility in violin, alto saxophone, soprano saxophone, flute, panpipes and piano has given her the chance to work for some of the world’s most prestigious hotels and cruise companies. Rachel has also performed along-side acts including Bucks Fizz, David Copperfield, Simmons and Simmons, Jess Conrad and The Krankies.Male vocalist Luke Walsh makes his very first appearance in Cromer and is looking forward to a summer season by the sea, which he says, will make a nice change from his home in Purley in South London. Luke has been singing since he was nine. His first professional appearance was at The Courtyard Theatre in Hereford. Amongst his other engagements Luke has appeared in the BBC’s Friday Night is Music Night, and at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall.

tap to ballet. Add to this fabulous mix of talent colourful costumes, stunning sets, lights and music and you have a show to remember - The Cromer Pier Show.

The very talented and experienced Di Cooke returns for another year as devisor, director and choreographer, bringing her wealth of experience to a show that is now recognised nationally as an ‘incubator’ for talent, with many of today’s stars having trod the boards of the famous Pavilion Theatre, including Bradley Walsh, 2013 Britain’s Got Talent finalist ventriloquist Steve Hewlett, and 2014 BGT finalist comedy impressionist Danny Posthill. Di is not giving much away about this year’s show, except to say that it will be ‘an all round variety show experience’ and, with such a talented cast, that is certain to be the case.

Vocalist Jane Watkins appeared in last year’s show and is looking forward to another summer season in Cromer meeting up with friends and fans. Jane has spent the last few months at sea touring the world with Silverseas Cruise Line including a trip up the Amazon. After months at sea, SOME THINGS WERE MADE FOR EACH OTHER« Jane will still be performing above the waves but this time it’s just a short walk to dry land. No variety show would be complete without its dancers and the Cromer Pier Show is no exception. The Seaside Special Dancers will be working as hard as ever and displaying their talents in all forms of dance from

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club

Lynn 7 – 2. In my view this was an even better result. The following week away against Fakenham Town ‘A’ there was a 2 -7 defeat. However as this is the County Premier League I think the team can be proud of its efforts so far. Two of the team members go to regular Bingo sessions with their wives. One was heard to say that he never gets a line or a full house. In the following discussion it turns out he cannot understand the caller. Could be an accent thing eh Jock? The NANSA team seem to have had more than their fair share of bad weather. Having had the game at Overstrand cancelled this was follow by another cancellation, due to rain, against Holt Swifts. However they did manage to get on the green at home to Smallborough & Dilham with a close match ending in 4 – 4 draw. This was followed by another home game against Sheringham Morley Panthers which saw

Tales from the Bowling Green ...

…where we all wish the weather would make up its mind if it was summer or not!

In the leagues the Hansells League team had a very good win at home against Norfolk Bowling Club ‘C’ 5 – 0. The following week due to a team withdrawing from the league an interteam challenge saw most members of the squad, and others on the green. Useful workout and some played better than others. Our first journey to Caister ‘B’ the following week saw the team lose 1 – 4, which I have to say was a disappointing result. The Federation team travelled to Bawdeswell to play Foulsham and returned with a very creditable 8 -1 win. This was followed by a home win against South
