CROMER TOWN COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT 2014/2015
Cromer Town Council, North Lodge, Overstrand Road, Cromer, NR27 0AH Tel: 01263 512254 Email: clerk@cromertown.org Website: www.cromertown.org
WORDS FROM MAYOR OF CROMER 2014/15
This year has been a year of mixed fortunes, but taken as a whole, I think it has been relatively successful. The Council has been faced with some challenges which have proved problematic, and considerable time and effort have been spent on debating these issues. I refer to, of course, the application for a Crematorium, and the taking on of North Lodge Park from the North Norfolk District Council.
With regard to the former, we still await the outcome of an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate on the Crematorium. This will be heard sometime in July this year and we are still confident of a positive result. As to the latter, the whole issue of the Town Council taking on the Park has been a subject of debate, discussion with various parties and trying to sort out legal issues connected with the park itself. These have taken place over several years, much to the frustration of Councillors and public alike. At the time of writing this report they are still not settled, but we hope they will be in the near future.
To highlight one or two things of a very positive nature in the town, one is the development of a Skatepark for our young people. There has been a group of very hardworking people, both young and not so young, who have progressed this to a successful conclusion and we congratulate them on this. The opening of the Skatepark won’t be the end of their fundraising efforts, however – money will still be needed for maintenance and to put on events for the town’s young people. So do please continue to give them your support. Over the years I have been on the Council, I have seen many changes, and all for the better. The town now has a very progressive, forward-looking membership, helped by two very efficient members of staff, namely Mrs Julie Chance who is the Town Clerk, and Mrs Janet Warner, the Deputy Clerk. I have enjoyed working with all members and this includes former members over the sixteen years I have been a Councillor. I welcome four new members on the council, Mr Richard Leeds (Mr RNLI), Ms Debbie Conisbee, Mr John Rattle and Mr David Russell, and I hope they will soon be involved in working on the council. This year has been very enjoyable and I congratulate all members for working as a unit to achieve their goals.

It’s gradually turning into a wonderful summer and we are extremely busy here in the Gem of the Norfolk Coast. The vegetable garden is looking fantastic, with a dense foliage of broad and runner beans and a small forest of rhubard – all meticulously tended by the Estate Manager Emeritus - and so far we have only lost three kitchen porters in the search for new potatoes. It’s well worth it because the potatoes are delicious.
Ingredients 60g semi-sweet chocolate chips, such as Ghirardelli 4 very ripe avocados, peeled and pitted 60g unsweetened cocoa powder 120ml cup almond milk 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon fine salt Fresh raspberries, for garnish

CROMER FLOWER CLUB
At the June meeting of Cromer Flower Club we were very pleased to welcome Jenni Baker from Halesworth.
Her splendid demonstration was entitled ‘Chosen for You’. During the evening, she showed us six quite different arrangements which were interspersed with amusing anecdotes about her travels, her garden and her family.
Jenni was kind enough to judge the competition in which members were asked to interpret 'A Girl's Name in Flowers'. Her comments were much appreciated by the members who took part. We had roses, irises, ivy and poppies used. The best in show was judged by Jenni to be Lynn Tester, with her beautiful arrangement of irises and orange roses.
Cromer Flower Club meets at Cromer Junior School on the third Monday of each month with the exception of August. New members and guests are always most welcome.

Thorpe Market Church History Project
When there are events at St Margaret’s Church we are constantly approached by visitors who delight in telling us that they were married at the church.
In preparation for a future local history day, we would like to be able to have a display of ‘Weddings through the Years’. If you yourself, or someone you know, has such an affinity with our village church PLEASE encourage them to contact us on info@thorpemarket.org.uk
With modern technology there is no need for anyone to part with cherished family memories, a simple scan is all that is needed. Early 20th century, or who knows, even late 19th century would be a wonderful discovery. All the wedding registers are held at the County Records Office so we have access to details of all the weddings, even pre-dating photographs.

Tickets available from Shirley Davies 07881 647240, The Cottage & The Copy Shop
We have even had mention of wedding dresses still lurking in attics. Any reminiscences, anecdotes and especially pictures would be very welcomed.
This will be quite a big project and if there is anyone with family connections who would like to be part of collating and preparing material for display, please do contact us.

Building Excellence award wins for North Norfolk District Council
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) scooped two awards at the 2015 East Anglia Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence awards held at St Andrew’s Hall, Norwich on Friday 26 June. The LABC Building Excellence Awards recognise the importance of Building Control in England and Wales in creating safe, accessible and sustainable buildings that are constructed to high standards. The awards are a celebration of the best projects in the region (including Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Norfolk) for quality and compliance with building regulations. The wins this year were for: • the best small housing development, awarded for Three Ties Barn Brumstead Road, Stalham • the best social or affordable housing development, awarded for Goulders Lane, Felmingham
12
Cllr Sue Arnold, Portfolio Holder for Planning said “This is great news and reflects the excellent work which North Norfolk District Council Building Control team does, and showcases how they can help deliver award winning projects for their clients.” The award winning projects will now go forward to the national awards held later this year in November. Both categories reflect the excellent work that is on-going in delivering good quality, sustainable housing in North Norfolk. The awards were accepted on stage by the developers accompanied by Stuart Tate, Sue Wootton, Daniel Theobald and Elliott Schubert of NNDC’s Building Control department who attended the awards ceremony. If you would like to share in this success, why not become a partner of North Norfolk District Council Building Control?

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We have recently had problems with our branch phone line. Initially with lots of background noise but latterly, the phone has been dead when Stephanie answers or the answer phone starts its message. We cannot even transfer calls, which we normally do when Stephanie is on holiday, as BT have taken this facility away while trying to find the cause. As Stephanie had the same problem with her own phone recently, and some of her neighbours have been affected too, we are hoping that the problems will be resolved by the time you read this. When giving a home to a cat for the first time, one of the most important purchases will be a cat basket for transporting your cat safely when visiting the vets or a cattery. These Abbie would like a new come in various shapes, sizes and materials so home now that her it is important to make kittens have left us sure you get one which offers security and is the right size for the cat in question (please remember if acquiring for a kitten, it will get much bigger). It may be because of problems in the past, (when cats have escaped from what has been believed to be a secure carrier) that, recently, several manufacturers have been indicating a weight restriction on their products. Although the basket may be large enough to hold the cat comfortably, if it is too heavy when lifted by the handle, it can pull slightly apart, allowing the cat to
make an unscheduled exit. When buying a new basket, please take this into consideration. If, however, you already have a basket and are not sure whether or not it is completely secure, hold it underneath rather than by the handle. Most people using Lyngate Road in North Walsham will be aware of the stall selling goods to raise money for the cats at Sharon’s home. All the items for sale have been donated to us by cat loving members of the community to raise money for the cats in care. Sadly, recently, there have been some items taken from the stall without payment, including a wicker cat basket. What sort of person does this we might ask? Not our sort of person and not a true cat lover. Perhaps someone has taken the goods to make money for themselves, even if they have not got a cat. Should you be offered a wicker cat basket, please be aware it could be the one stolen from the stall. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special campaign mentioned in the last article. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call
on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

CROMER PIER SHOW 2015
The Cromer Pier Summer 2015 show is now being performed in its own characteristic brilliant style for its 39th season.

Paul Eastwood, the show host and comedian, is back for his second season and keeps the show moving as well as keeping the audience in fits of giggles and laughter with his cheeky patter. Ben Langley is great in his support for Paul as well as his own lively act and the special guest appearance of his alter ego Tina Mesmeranzo. Paul and Ben really combine well in this variety extravaganza. Jane Watkins and Luke Walsh, the talented principal vocalists, are excellent in their solo pieces but are also outstanding in the “entire company” sets.
As usual the shows dancers were magnificent, choreographed by Di Cooke, providing inspirational and brilliant routines including ballet and glittering, bubbly show numbers.
The entire company were helped in the closing of the first half (Mary Poppins) by The Marlene School of Dance children. They certainly gave the AH! Factor. Marlene and all her instructors and helpers should give themselves a good slap on the back for a job well done.
The whole show was kept moving by Musical Director, Nigel Hogg supported by Ian Westbrook (Scenic Designer), Laura White (Costume Designer) and Amanda Hill (Lighting Designer).
Congratulations to all concerned with this fantastic production.

CROMER SKATE PARK LAUNCH DAY A GREAT SUCCESS
On the afternoon of Sunday 21 June, hundreds of people flocked to the official opening of Cromer's new skate park, heralding the beginning of a new era for the young people of the town. Al the omens were good. Specialist developers Maverick had completed construction work the preceding week, and the fences had finally come down. The weather on the day was kind - mild, and remaining dry throughout, with even an occasional burst of sunshine.
The opening speech was delivered by Councillor Tom Fitzpatrick, leader of North Norfolk District Council. There were addresses from Cromer Mayor Tim Adams, and also from Ben Gasse-Coope, representing the junior contingent of the Cromer Skate Park committee. After the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon, the new skate park was declared open, ready for the afternoon's full schedule of activities to begin. The star attraction was European freestyle scooter champion Brandon James, who had travelled up from London specifically to put in a guest appearance. Brandon, together with his colleague Connor, performed a number of impressive demonstrations throughout the afternoon, all of which were very well received.
There were competitions in three categories scooter, skateboard and BMX. These were all extremely popular, so entrants were limited to just
60 seconds each in which to display their skills. Congratulations go to Bart, Ezra and Joe Foster respectively, each of whom received a lavish prize package, courtesy of the Wet Dog surf shop.
It was not only the young people of Cromer who were keen to try out the new skate park. Young enthusiasts had travelled from Norwich and beyond. Fortunately, there were plenty of free skating sessions throughout the afternoon during which they could all practice their spectacular skills.
In the meantime, as if this was not enough, there was something for everyone on the music stage. Three-piece band Gentlemen delivered a couple of scorching sets, their own blues-tinged compositions sitting very comfortably alongside classics from the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Franz

Ferdinand. For those of a more acoustic persuasion, there was a classy appearance from local singer Charlie Hield, and the Cromer Gospel choir kept spirits high with a mix of the calm and the upbeat from their repertoire.
A number of local businesses and organisations were represented at the event, including Cromer Town Council, North Norfolk Radio, Wet Dog surf shop and Cromer Surf Club.
Participants and spectators refuelled with pizza from Hot Rocket Pizza and burgers from Corky's. Tea, coffee and soft drinks were on offer courtesy of Coffee2Go, and there were ice creams available from Dimascio's.
The Cromer Skate Park committee ran a tombola stall. Towards the end of proceedings, a handsome bespoke skateboard valued at over £250 was given away as a raffle prize. Proceeds from both will be a valuable early contribution towards the ongoing costs of maintaining the new skate park. The Cromer Skate Park committee thanks everybody who came, in whatever capacity. It all helped to make the event the success it clearly was. Special thanks to Brandon James, Gentlemen, Charlie Hield, and the Cromer Gospel Choir, all of whom donated their time and effort to support this great cause. Most of all, however, our thanks go to all those who risked grazed knees and bruised egos to try out their scooters, skateboards and bikes on the new skate park, and in front of such a large crowd. Sheringham Players
Sheringham's amateur dramatic group Sheringham Players followed up their very successful spring production with yet another brilliant set of performances in their production of "Flying Feathers" at Sheringham Little Theatre in June. The production was an enormous success, with a near sell out on each evening. The farce, written by ex-Coronation Street star Derek Benfield, and directed by Players’ members Tim Travers assisted by Shai Ashkenazi, was hilarious, with fantastic performances from the very talented and funny Matt Warrington and Greg Pope, as the dubious vicar and haplass solicitor respectively, and with great characterisation and comic timing from Graham Blyth, who played two roles as twin brothers, ably supported by the stylish Helen Simmons as their sister. Great credit must also go to the five girls, Sue Bignall, Fi Cross, Suzanne Challinor, Laura Wakefield and Rosie Gilding for being very brave in appearing scantily clad throughout and delivering consistent performances as the ladies of

Weather from Ned Nimbus
Unfortunately, the forecast for the period April June was correct and any positive changes in the next three months will be slow but, as we get into August and into September longer finer pells without interruption can be expected. With a mild winter many forecasters were expecting a warm spring and an early onset of a hot summer but a lot of cold air to the west of us, and a colder than normal North Atlantic and North Sea, cast into doubt such an expectation. The odd burst of warm air from the continent has quickly been displaced. This pattern will continue, always with the risk of thunderstorms, as the cold and warm air masses meet. This sort of setup is not unusual and, like most weather patterns, it has all happened before. Reporting is helping to highlight the more vigorous events and help us understand the complexities and the multitude of elements that influence nature's distribution of weather across the planet Ned Nimbus Date 11-Jul

Record Breaking Doodle Challenge – Calling all doodlers: We need you! Libraries across North Norfolk are to challenge children this summer to create the longest ever drawing…and it is all going to be created using every day sticky-notes!
During the summer holidays, children are being asked to doodle a picture on a standard sized sticky-note that best illustrates why they love to visit their local library. The doodles will be put together to make a record breaking piece of bunting. The record attempt is part of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, an annual event, produced by The Reading Agency and delivered by the library network across the country to inspire all children to read their choice of library books whilst collecting stickers to complete the fold - up poster. To help inspire the children, local illustrator, Adam Faulconbridge, will be running free workshops in all eight North Norfolk libraries. At each session he will introduce and demonstrate many different types of book illustration from comic book drawings and Japanese Manga style, to traditional printing methods and classroom doodles before each child tries them out. Don’t miss Adam at your nearest library -
• Cromer between 11am – 1pm on Tuesday 28 July
• Stalham between 11am – 1pm on Monday 3 August • Mundesley between 2.30pm – 4.30pm on Tuesday 4 August
• Fakenham between 10am – 12noon on Wednesday 5 August
• Wells-next-the-Sea between 1.30pm – 3.30pm on Wednesday 5 August
• Holt between 10am – 1pm on Friday 7 August
• Sheringham between 11am – 1pm on Monday 10 August
• North Walsham between 11am – 1pm on Tuesday 11 August
These workshops are sponsored by FALCON (www.falcon-norfolk.org.uk) which aims to provide opportunities for children and young people to engage with creativity in all its forms.
Throughout the summer the children can drop-off their doodles on sticky-notes to their local library (whilst they pick up their latest book to read!) to contribute to their own library’s paper chain of doodles (they might draw just the one – they might draw twenty…it is up to them). Who knows there may be a bit of ‘friendly’ inter-library competition to see who can create, and contribute, the longest piece of bunting?
All the doodles will be joined together to make a record breaking string of bunting and displayed on Cromer Pier on Saturday 5 September at 2pm. Come and join the stars of the Cromer Pier Show who will be unrolling the masterpiece before they get ready for their 4pm matinee. Don’t miss being part of Norfolk Libraries attempt to create a record for the most people of all ages listening to the same story at the same time. Julia Donaldson’s ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’ will be read
at 11.15am on Saturday 25 July in a library near you.
New for 2015 - a special summer challenge for pre-school children and 11-18 year olds can join ImagiNation, where they can go wild with ideas for art, music, photography and poetry - all inspired by the books they enjoy over the summer.
Get the whole family reading this summer by visiting any Norfolk Library or mobile library. Look out too for other special Record Breakers themed events over the summer at your local library. To find out more information, and to pick up your poster, pop into any Norfolk Library or mobile library. Non-surgical option for
treatment of varicose veins
Coltishall Clinic is pleased to announce a treatment program for varicose veins. Endovenous laser therapy is a quick, minimally invasive alternative to traditional vein stripping.
Endovenous laser therapy is a relatively new outpatient treatment that can be performed under local anaesthesia in less than an hour.
Varicose veins occur when the vein is not functioning properly to return blood from the lower leg to the heart. Each vein has a series of valves that open to allow the flow of blood to the heart, and close to prevent backflow (otherwise known as “reflux”) of blood back into the foot. The walls and valves of veins are thin and elastic, and can stretch due to a variety of conditions including pregnancy, heredity injuries, inflammation and age.
Approximately half of the population has some form of venous disease, and varicose veins affect about one out of two people age 50 and older, and 15-25% of all adults.
Previously, treatment of painful, swollen varicose veins required a surgical procedure called vein stripping, where the vein was completely removed from the leg.
More recently, endovenous laser therapy has been developed. Bulging varicose veins in the lower leg are usually caused by a faulty valve located higher in the leg, that can’t be seen at the surface.
The endovenous laser therapy treats the source of the problem, which then causes the varicose vein in the lower leg to shrink and disappear. Endovenous laser therapy involves the insertion of an ultrasound-guided laser fibre directly into the incompetent great or short saphenous vein. Laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut. Patients experience minimal discomfort, and they can return to normal activities the same day. Because there are many veins in the leg, the blood that would have flowed through the closed vein simply flows through other healthy veins after the laser therapy.

The launch of Trust Norfolk SEN; the co-operative with a difference The Forum in Norwich will play host on Friday 10 July to the official launch of Trust Norfolk - SEN, an exciting project designed to enrich special needs education throughout Norfolk. Trust Norfolk - SEN formalises the longstanding collaboration of Norfolk's 11 Special Educational Needs Schools, which are situated across the county from Kings Lynn in the west to Great Yarmouth in the east and from Sheringham in the north to Attleborough in the south. In 2012, the Norfolk Association of Special School Head teachers (NASSH) aspired to build on and reinforce the support that could be offered to the Special Educational Needs community in Norfolk, and after extensive research, it was decided that a Co-operative School Trust would best serve everyone's needs. Trust Norfolk - SEN was born. The members of the Trust will collaborate and support each other in a number of areas, ensuring high quality training, improvement in SEN development planning, leadership and management, the provision of SEN services, and in doing this, enriching experiences and opportunities for learning. It will become a Forum for its members. Further details of the Trust's aims can be found at

trustnorfolk-sen.co.uk along with how to join the Trust as a member. Visitors to the launch will be able to witness at first hand the results of an amazing collaborative artistic venture - the unveiling of a 12-month creative arts project undertaken by students of all ages and abilities from Trust schools, who have worked on a textile masterpiece - ‘Firework Celebration' with the artistic support of Dominique Clark. This artwork will remain on display for the entire weekend of the launch. Students from Trust schools will also join the launch on Friday to sing and sign together. Two other collaborative projects have already taken place this year, the first in April, the second in May 2015. The first saw a large group of students travel to Italy to experience and develop ski skills, the second was a combined school outing to Bewilderwood, courtesy of owner, Tom Blofeld. "Bringing so many schools together to work, play and learn is a logistical challenge, but incredibly worthwhile," said Keith McKenzie, Head of Hall School in Norwich, and Vice-Chair of Trust Norfolk - SEN. ‘Walsham Writers' Group is a small, friendly group of writers from the local area. RNLI Cromer Crew Called to Search for Missing Diver On Sunday 20 June a call was received at 11.53 from the Coastguard and the Cromer RNLI pagers sounded at 11 58, asking for the launch of both the Inshore Lifeboat ‘George and Muriel’ and the All-Weather Lifeboat ‘Lester’. The HMCG had received a call asking for help after a report had been received that a diver was missing off the Weybourne coast.
Quickly both boats launched with the inshore boat in the water by 12.05 and the larger boat at 12.10. Both boats were quickly on scene and the search and

rescue operation commenced. At 12.20 a report was received that the diver had been found safe and well on shore and both boats returned to station.
By 12.40 the inshore boat had been rehoused, cleaned down and made ready for its next call. It was followed at 12.50 by ‘Lester’ who was soon back at station and also made ready.
Ady Barker, RNLI Second Coxswain for Cromer’s RNLI Lifeboat, says: ‘All our maritime friends are always aware of the immediate support that is provided by the RNLI to anyone who needs help.’ Photos by kind permission Chris Gill

Fill your holidays with summer time fun!
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has launched its largest ever range of activities and events to help families fill their holidays with fun days out throughout the summer.
The countryside and sports and leisure teams have joined up to host ‘Fun Day Out’ at Pretty Corner Woods on Thursday 13 August, 10am 4pm. Come along and join the team for a great day of fun and activities including face painting, a bouncy castle, shelter building and donkey rides. Entrance is just £4 for children and adults go free!
Additionally, NNDC’s leisure services team is hosting a range of activities at the Council’s countryside sites and sports centres during the summer holidays. Events for children and adults are taking place at Holt Country Park, and at Bacton and Sadler’s Woods, both near North Walsham, and Pretty Corner Woods, near Sheringham. Some of the highlights include hunting for mini beasts, searching
for treasure and a teddy bear’s picnic!
The three sports centres at Stalham, North Walsham and Cromer are offering a full programme of children’s activities. With activities ranging from cricket to street dancing, there’s something in the programme for everyone! Places must be booked for all sport centre activities. A full programme and booking form can be downloaded at www.northnorfolk.org/sports
For those not familiar with the vast range of activities on offer at the Council’s sports centres, open days are being hosted throughout the summer. Entrance is free and visitors can try their hand at a variety of sports and games and learn more about what the centres have to offer.
Councillor Becky Palmer, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “Local people and visitors to the district will find a whole host of fun days out options to keep
children of all ages entertained during school holiday.
“There is plenty to choose from this summer to suit the whole family, ranging from mini beast hunts at our countryside sites to traditional sports such as cricket and football at our sports centres. I recommend that people check our website for details of our events and follow us on Twitter to help plan their holidays.”
NNDC’s award-winning beaches will also play host to sports and games with activities taking place at Sheringham, East Runton and Sea Palling beaches during the holiday period.
There is no need to book for the countryside and beach events, just turn up. Check www.northnorfolk.org/events for details of the countryside events and www.northnorfolk.org/sports for details of activities available at our sports centres. Follow us on Twitter @NorthNorfolkDC for regular updates.
