YOUNGEST MEMBER IS NEW ROTARY PRESIDENT
Debz Conisbee, a native of Cromer and the youngest member of Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club, is the Club’s new President for 2015-16.
Debz, (53), joined Rotary only two years ago after returning to Cromer. Prior to that, she gained a wealth of planning and organisational skills in industry and commerce – including over 20 years overseas, particularly in the States - which she will bring to her new position. In recent years, she has worked for The Guinness Partnership as a project coordinator, the Royal Amories as a volunteer curator; and Europe’s largest Hyundai dealership as marketing and customer liaison manager to name just a few. Since returning to Cromer, she has been working for Cromer Parish Church as Team Assistant and was recently elected to Cromer Town Council.
As newly elected President of Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club her chosen charity for the year will be The Canaan Homeless Shelter in Sheringham. Equally, she plans to raise Rotary’s profile generally and ensure the Club becomes more active, serving the local community.
Debz Conisbee after receiving the chain of office from retiring President John Williams

Holt Festival Art Prize winner announced by international artist
The winner of the fourth Holt Festival Art Prize was announced last month by one of the region’s best known artists.

by artist Colin Self on behalf of the judges.
The announcement of the prize-winner was made at what has become the traditional opening event of north Norfolk’s annual arts feast, just before the Festival’s first concert which this year saw a packed and enthusiastic audience for The Puppini Sisters.
The 2015 judging panel was Amanda Geitner, Chief Curator at The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, London art adviser Nic Tyler alongside Norfolk based, internationally renowned ‘pop’ artist Colin Self.
They initially selected a short list of 33 to exhibit from almost 250 entries from around the UK before choosing the winner from that list.
International Art Appraiser James Glennie who curates exhibitions for the Holt Festival and has organised the competition since it began in 2012 commented ‘the almost unbelievably high standard of entries really does seem to get better and better each year. It’s always such a thrill to see the art that people submit’
Norwich born Brüer now lives in Gorleston and has a studio in
Great Yarmouth. He attended Great Yarmouth Art College from 1957 – 1961 before moving up to the Royal College of Art from 19611964. He has painted many pictures of Beth, who has suffered from MS since the age of 17 and in 1996 staged an exhibition at Norwich’s King of Hearts gallery that was made up exclusively of portraits of her.
‘This exhibition of shortlisted works is a very good show’ he commented ‘and even after all these years as a professional artist it’s a real thrill to win this award – especially from such a distinguished panel of judges and in the face of such serious competition. I have to say I have known Colin Self all his life - we grew up in the same part of Norwich. I completed this painting in 1996 and he has actually asked to buy it off me several times!’ Brüer Tidman work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in London, Zurich, Valkenswaard and Amsterdam in Holland, and Finland amongst others. He wins a prize of £1,500 and the painting will also be exhibited at The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Art in the Autumn.
Thanks
Joe Hayley and family would like to thank everyone who came to their party at North Walsham Community Centre on 18 July. It was a great night and £331 was raised for MS Norwich & District branch. Thanks once again.

Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner, near Sheringham, have again been named amongst the best open spaces in the UK, winning the right to fly the prestigious Green Flag for 2015/16.
1582 parks and green spaces that have been awarded with a prestigious Green Flag Award for 2015/2016.
It is the eleventh year in a row that Holt Country Park, which, like the other two winners, is run by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), has earned a Green Flag for being welcoming, safe, clean and well-managed.
In 2005, Holt Country Park was the first in Norfolk to win a Green Flag - an award that demands year-on-year improvement for the status to be retained. It’s been an exciting twelve months for the park with the addition of a new wildlife garden and the sighting of a Scarce Tortoiseshell butterfly. Until 2014 there has been only one sighting of the butterfly (also known as the Yellow Legged Tortoiseshell) in Britain.

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme. All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
Becky Palmer, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “North Norfolk has a host of beautiful open spaces and I am delighted that Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods have attracted national recognition once again.
Cllr. Palmer added “Not only do our award-winning green spaces offer peace and tranquillity, they are also wonderful places for children and their families to have fun while learning about our natural environment. Come and visit this summer, our countryside rangers have a full programme of activities for the whole family to enjoy!”
Holt Country Park was joined by Sadler’s Wood, just outside North Walsham, when it achieved a Green Flag in 2012, and then by Pretty Corner Woods the following year. A joint application was made this year for this first time by NNDC and the Woodland Trust. Woodland Trust manages the adjacent ‘Old Wood’, which is now included by the Green Flag award.

There are no less than three spectacular air display teams this year - The Wildcats start things off on Tuesday 18th August at 12.30 pm. On the next day - Carnival Day itself - it’s the turn of the Blades on Wednesday 19th August at 1 pm. Sandwiching the Blades, the Yakovlevs will be doing two displays at 10.45 am and 3.05 pm. Throughout the week, Carnival Queen Charlotte Crane and her entourage that make up the Royal Family, will be on hand to make presentations at official events. Don’t forget that this really is a carnival for all - special children’s events are held every day for two weeks. Entrants for the Carnival Parade on Wednesday evening assemble at 5 pm on Carnival Field on the Runton Road, with the Parade due to start at 7 pm. It’s sure to have some very special
floats to see. So if you like, dog shows, falconry, motorbike display, mini beer festival, Romford Drum and Trumpet Corps, Smokehouse Blues Marching Jazz Band, The Croydon Steel Orchestra, and many, many more ‘turns’ and events, then this is the Carnival for you. What’s missing from this story? Hundreds of volunteers and sponsors that make carnival the very special week (and more) that it is. You can see them on the website below.

Sale at Hoveton Village Hall on 16 August 10am to 3pm.
This is a massive table top sale and all money raised will go towards research to find out why all the birds are on the decline. Money raised so far is well over £10,000. We would like to thank an anonymous person for their donation of £500. Also a local lady for her donation of £50.
This research has never been done before and covers habitat, modern farming, predators and pollution. After spending the biggest part of my life on the land, I would like to see children of the younger generation enjoy what I have enjoyed. The work we do is very enjoyable and we are working very hard - we are just a small group of local residents. The public are so generous and without them we would not have raised so much so a big thank you all. We are still in need of items so if anybody can help it would be appreciated. Mr E Bullimore 8

OVERSTRAND GARDENING CLUB
The Overstrand Gardening Club held their monthly meeting on Tuesday 7 July. The speaker for this meeting was Chris Whiting and was entitled 'Amphibians and Reptiles in the Garden'.
The talk was illustrated, and Chris gave information on the native species of amphibians including the different types of newts, frogs and toads. Reptiles native to the UK include adders, grass snakes, smooth snakes, sand lizards, common lizards and slow worms. The grass snake is UK's largest reptile, and likes to lay its eggs in manure, and compost bins.
Frogs, toads, newts and slow worms were a gardener's friend Chris explained as they were good for pest control. An area of longer grass was also a good idea, as this helped attract wildlife as would a garden pond. Ivy is good for insects and is a good source of nectar.

CROMER FLOWER CLUB
At our last meeting we enjoyed a world of flowers from the airport to the rainforest without passport control and all that travel entails.
Our demonstrator Terri Potter transported us with ease to remote and exotic places with wonderful designs and fabulous flowers.
A raffle to win an arrangement was eagerly anticipated and the task of what to choose if lucky as all were very desirable.
Terri judges our competition and best on show was Helen Lawrie. There is no meeting in August as we will be decorating the Carnival Queen’s float on 19 August.
Our next meeting is on 21 September at 7.30pm at Cromer Junior School with Pat Barton demonstrating Tints Tones & Textures. Visitors are always welcome.

Norfolk Reflections New Watercolours by John Hurst
Well-known local watercolourist, John Hurst, is once again holding his annual coastal exhibitions during August, September and October. John is in the process of completing a number of new original watercolours and as the title suggests many include dyke, creek and river reflections. John has travelled west as far as Brancaster Staithe and east as far as Overstrand as well as the Glaven valley to find new compositions, using a rich, seasonal palette in order to capture the essence of coastal Norfolk in summer. The whole collection will be launched and offered for sale on Friday 28 August in the British Columbia Hall, Salthouse, with the exhibition running until Monday 31 August. The artist will be in attendance each day from 10am – 5pm. John’s Blakeney shows are to be held in St Nicholas Church room on the quay from 12 - 18 September and 17 – 23 October. John has accepted a number of important national commissions during the forthcoming autumn, including an estate study in Devon, which entails making 20 originals to be leather bound into a heritage book. He was also recently invited to present a painting of Easton College and environs to David Lawrence OBE, at a celebration to mark his retirement as the long serving principle of the college. This was in response to a commission, painted in secret and unveiled during an evening presentation. North Norfolk District Council prosecutes Cromer man for burning commercial waste illegally (2) Burning commercial waste producing noxious smoke on 13 June 2014 A Cromer resident has been fined a total of £3343 for burning waste illegally following an appearance at Norwich Magistrates Court.
Harry Wright, 59, of Fellside Farm, Cromer pleaded guilty to two offences of burning waste contrary to section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) prosecuted Mr Wright following an investigation by its Environmental Protection Officers after reports were received from members of the public of burning and of large plumes of thick black smoke. Despite receiving three visits and written correspondence from the officers, Mr Wright continued to burn waste illegally. Photographic evidence was offered to the court.
Mr Wright pleaded guilty to the following: (1) Burning commercial waste producing noxious smoke on 11 June 2014
12
He was fined £1065 for each offence, £1000 for prosecutions costs and £213 for victim surcharge.
North Norfolk District Council’s Leader, Tom FitzPatrick said: “I hope that this successful prosecution sends out a strong message that North Norfolk District Council will not tolerate those who behave in such a reckless and deliberate manner. Mr Wright showed a blatant disregard not just for the law and the advice of Council officers, but for the environment and for the health and well-being of others and in such cases, we will seek to prosecute.”
NNDC would like to thank the members of the public who reported this incident and. People are advised to contact the Environmental Protection Team at North Norfolk District Council on 01263 516085 if they suspect waste is being burned illegally.

Members were not thwarted in June when showers threatened to dampen our evening walk, which combined a quiz.
The walk and quiz organised by Val Brimfield, were followed by strawberries and cream in the Parish Hall with an opportunity to buy items from the sales table. Earlier in the month Hazel Jezek, attended the 100th National Federation of WI’s Annual Meeting at the Royal Albert Hall. Hazel gave us an entertaining account of the event which was attended by over 5,000 WI members, including HRH Queen Elizabeth II.
We were absolutely delighted to hear that our ‘Time Warp Toy Box’ entry in the North Norfolk Show was placed second. Special thanks to Pauline Clarke who planned and designed our entry and to the members who provided the amazing variety of toys.
In July we welcomed Claire Putterill, who talked about ‘Inheritance and Legal Matters’. Amongst the topics she covered were wills, powers of attorney, living wills and family trusts. Given the time available it was impossible to cover each topic in great depth but it was evident that there is plenty to consider and put in place if we are to ensure our wishes for later life and after death are formally recorded. The final total for the amount raised at our very successful yard sale on Sunday 12 July was announced and thanks were extended to all those involved both beforehand and during the day.
Our August meeting on the 12 August will be an informal ‘knit and natter’ and on 16 September James Begley will be talking about Community First Responders.
We welcome visitors and prospective new members (you do not have to be an Overstrand resident to join us) to our walks and monthly meetings.
Our meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand.

The Care Act Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr
The Care Act came into effect on 1st April 2015. It is a major and important reform and will affect anyone living in England who has care needs now and in the future.
The ‘Wellbeing Principle’ is a new and important concept. It covers a wide range of factors including: personal dignity; physical, mental and emotional wellbeing; protection from abuse and neglect; accommodation; family, domestic and personal wellbeing. There is an attempt to recognise that different people have different needs rather than just considering which Local Authority (“LA) service they will fit into. There is a move away from only providing residential (i.e. care home) and domiciliary (i.e. at home) care. There are a wide range of assessment methods now available.
The important changes that you should know about are:
• The legal right to a Care Assessment. The LA must provide this to anyone who appears to need care or support. This is regardless of their finances and even if they are paying for their own care. If someone is eligible for support,
a Support Plan will be agreed and they will receive a Personal Budget. It is important to have an assessment as this will have an impact on how much one ends up paying for care over a lifetime. It should help people to plan their care and ensure that they get the right support.
• new means-testing thresholds. The LA will arrange a financial assessment to decide what someone can afford to contribute towards their care costs. The thresholds are £118,000 if in a care home and £27,000 if living their own home. Below these thresholds the financial contribution decreases on a sliding scale as assets get less. There is also the Minimum Income Guarantee to ensure that whatever is paid towards care does not cause the person’s income to fall below a certain level.
• Carers have a right to an assessment of their needs. Anyone who provides unpaid care has a right to this as a carer. If the carer is eligible for support from the LA, a Support Plan will be agreed and the carer should receive a Personal Budget.
Always seek our specific advice.

‘Migration’ Exhibition at The Belfry
The Belfry Arts Centre in Overstrand is pleased to offer the opportunity to see the quality and variety of work by Liz Waugh McManus, a unique collection by a talented artist.
Previously the work of Liz Waugh McManus was included in the three group contemporary glass exhibitions shown at The Belfry Arts Centre in 2010 (Contemporary Glass), 2011 (On the Brink) and 2012 (Snakes and Ladders) when the visitors comment book showed clearly that her work caught the imagination of the people viewing the exhibitions.
‘People were drawn to the combination of technique, imagination and animation and were captured by the memories of childhood dreams and fears fuelled by fairy stories and nursery rhymes. Her work has gained recognition since then, both nationally and internationally, having been included regularly in the British Glass Biennale and was selected for the Coburg Glass Prize in Germany’ writes Nora Gaston.
Former mentor, Angela Thwaites, writes “Liz Waugh’s first solo show was a well-kept secret at The Cut, a former maltings turned into a spacious multi arts centre in Halesworth,
Suffolk. Walking through the generous space the works gradually took you over one by one drawing you into their layers of meaning. The work shown encompassed film, animation, image and glass in all cases contemplative, subtle and thoughtfully produced.
After training in art and design at Dartington College of Arts and Oxford Polytechnic, Liz did a PhD in anthropology of art at the Queen’s University of Belfast. She writes ‘my multifaceted practice has included sculpture, puppetry, theatre and animation. I discovered the medium of glass in 2002 and as a foundation for personal experimentation learnt glass skills from leading practitioners in the field, such as Clifford Rainey, Tessa Clegg and Irene Frolic, and had mentorships with Emma Woffenden and Angela Thwaites. My work has been shown nationally and internationally and has been included in British Glass Biennale and the Coburg Glass Prize
exhibitions. I am member of the Contemporary Glass Society. I aim for a sense of living presence in my work and to engage with the viewer through narrative or playfulness. Combining glass with video projection enhances the possibilities to do this. The artwork is an exploration of snippets of stories found in all sorts of places – books, newspapers, toys, archival film footage, photographs which I inherited. The work in this exhibition all refers to a journey of some sort, whether through geographical or imagined places or through time.
‘Migration’ exhibits at The Belfry Arts Centre in Overstrand from 31 July until 12 August.
BRUSHSTROKES 2015 at Thorpe Market Church
Open daily from 10am until 4pm 19-26 August Free entry, parking, refreshments available. An exhibition by ‘The North Walsham Artists’
This group of artists live in or around North Walsham. Their numbers ebb and flow but hover around 10 members. They originally formed several years ago to put on a Christmas Exhibition in North Walsham and are now holding our third summer exhibition in Thorpe Market Church.
The 2D work includes paintings in various media, photographs, collages and silk-work. There are also tapestries, metal and drift wood sculptures, scarves, cushions and other accessories.
They aim to keep the art affordable. As well as original pieces, the exhibition includes prints, cards and smaller items. Refreshments are available. Do come and browse.

Coltishall Clinic
A no-knife, three-dimensional, natural face-lift using fillers or your own fat.
Two main characteristics of a beautiful face are fullness and flawless skin. We have many treatments including lasers to provide skin rejuvenation and even generate new skin. But how can we provide fullness? We have realised that a number of changes happen in the face due to ageing. Most important of these is a loss of volume. This is often more pronounced than loss of skin elasticity. So in this case adding volume to the face results in a youthful look, whereas skin removal can result in tight but not a youthful look.
Fat is your own natural filler. Fat is not merely a passive ‘filler'. It is an active metabolic tissue and a rich source of various growth factors and stem cells. Use of fat to fill areas of volume loss is not new but we have new techniques and refinements, which make it very successful. This procedure is very attractive if you are also considering body contouring or liposuction. Recent problems with breast implants have made fat transfer procedure attractive for breast enhancement as well.
What happens with facial ageing?
The old method of looking at facial ageing was based on a gravitational model: that all things fall over time. The new model of the facial ageing process focuses on the primary importance of how the face deflates and loses volume decade after decade. What was once thought to be sagging has now been understood to be caused by facial deflation. A facelift without volume restoration looks artificial. Replacing lost fat results in a natural look.
What is fat transfer?
Fat transfer is the transfer of fat from one part of your body to another. A doctor must carefully harvest fat cells that are then injected to firm, fill out or plump up other body part like face, hands, cheeks, breasts or buttocks. This is also known as fat injections or autologous fat grafting.

‘Whites’ Breakfast served 8am - 10am Lunchtime Snacks Tradional Sunday Roast 12 noon - 3pm Restaurant and Bar Menu Garden and Terrace Children's Play Area Bouncy Castle all summer long
How are fat injections different from commercial fillers?
There are many commercial injectable fillers such as Radiesse, Restylane, Sculptra, Juvederm etc that are available for facial rejuvenation. Each of these products has its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages. An ideal substance would be readily available, inexpensive, longlasting, natural-feeling, and would not cause adverse reactions. Your own tissue meets these requirements. Since it is your own body fat there is no chance of allergic reactions. Some of the injected fat can be reabsorbed by the body and more than one session may be required.
What happens during the procedure?
This procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. The process requires gentle fat removal using low-vacuum limited liposuction and the use of thin, delicate, non-traumatic fine tubes to protect the survival of each harvested living fat cell. The fat cells are then purified and slowly injected using a small syringe and cannula. Tiny droplets are placed throughout the tissues assuring that each transferred fat cell will have an adequate blood supply to achieve the permanent survival of the injected fat cells. Facial areas that can be treated with fat injections include the temples, eyebrows, marionette lines, under eyes (tear trough), jaw line, nose to mouth lines, cheeks, chin and scars due to acne, chickenpox, injury or surgery. This provides a three dimensional volumetric face lift.
What will my recovery be like?
Patients who have fat transfer experience a quick recovery. You are advised to rest for a few hours after the procedure. After 48 hours you may increase your activity as tolerated. Most patients are back to work within 2 to 5 days. Refrain from heavy exercise for a few weeks. Some amount of swelling and bruising can occur. Ice compresses are applied for 24-48 hours to minimize inflammation. Discourage massage and excessive facial animation immediately following fat grafting. These restrictions are to prevent migration of fat away from the desired areas of treatment.

Revised date for RNLI Cromer Lifeboat Day
As you will appreciate, due to the awful weather on Saturday 25 July and the predicted conditions on Lifeboat day itself, we had to postpone the event.
We have decided to hold the event on Sunday 9 August. The day will be almost the same with stalls, live demonstrations etc BUT unfortunately the Sheringham Shantymen, have a prior engagement.
To make a change we will be having Rig-a-Jig-Jig performing inside the boathouse rather than on the Pier forecourt. They will be giving demonstrations of Norfolk Step Dancing and are very ably led by Fiona Davies, who is the sister of our Coxswain, John Davies.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
The phone is still not working 100% as a new permanent ‘line’ has not been installed yet. Hopefully, this will have been done by the time you read this!
People may wonder why we feel so strongly about neutering cats. However, a glance in our pens at present should help them to appreciate why. At present we have 37 kittens in care (thankfully a further four were re-homed this week), most of which are recent arrivals. Two of these litters have come in with their mothers from outside situations, with no reports of missing cats in the areas concerned. We have also taken in seven litters of kittens from people who had not appreciated how difficult it would be to find new homes for them, or who had taken on pregnant cats which were no longer wanted by their owners. Another three kittens came into care and needed hand rearing, as their mother was sadly killed on the road when they were a few days old. A further litter of three kittens was left in a cardboard box on the doorstep of one of our fosterers while she was out. As this is the fourth time this has happened to her, she has real concerns that this might happen while she is on holiday. Four kittens were also rescued from a feral colony where we are paying for the adults to be neutered. Sadly, one of these was born with only three legs. However, from our experience last year, we know it will learn to live with its disability. As well as the arrival of all these kittens, we must also include 3 five month old little females found dumped in a box which was only 15" by 11" by 10", with hardly any room for them to breathe, let alone move. As they were all ‘calling’, a visit to the vets was top priority once they settled in their pen. We have also taken in another stray that was living close to one of our volunteer’s home and creating havoc in the area by fighting, again because he had not been neutered. Although not old, he is not a young cat and, due to the fighting, he had badly damaged an eye, which sadly could not be saved and had to be removed.
These kittens and cats are just the most recent arrivals that have joined us, either because their mothers were not neutered or they had also not been

SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS CLUB
This year, the Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club will be celebrating five years since they were formed, and during this period, we have gone from strength to strength.
I would like to take this opportunity to tell you something about the Lions Club and what we do. The Lions Clubs are all part of the Lions Club International, which is based in the USA. Lions Club International was started by a man by the name of Melvin Jones, in Chicago on 7 June 1917 when he, along with other businessmen joined together under the leadership of Melvin Jones, for the sole purpose of helping improve the conditions in the communities where they lived. From this date, the Lions Clubs have spread throughout the world, and are there purely to raise funds to help the needy in their own area. We use various methods to raise money to be used in our area, and not for nationwide, or worldwide use. When the Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club started in 2010, a small group of interested people met in the house of one of our founder members, and the club was formed. We, initially, were part of the Taverham Lions Club, but in October 2013, we were proud to be converted in to a Chartered Lions Club, and all the members became Charter Members. To be ble to make this wonderful step, we had to increase our membership to 21, and by doing so, we had become one of the fastest growing Lions Clubs in the UK. What do Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club do, I hear you ask. We meet on the second Tuesday of every month at the Morley Club in Sheringham for our business meeting, where we discuss any events that are taking place. Our Treasurer and President give us updated reports on the club and our finances. We consider any requests for help, and may arrange any social events for the future. On the fourth Tuesday of the month, we have some kind of social event - it may be a fund raising evening at the Morley Club, such as carpet bowls, a darts match, or something similar where the public are invited to attend. We have had visiting speakers, who have either told us about a group or charity that we may be considering helping or a guest speaker, who will talk about something that they are connected with, or their own life. The most interesting of these, was an evening with Wing Commander Ken Wallis, who in his late nineties, spoke to us about his life as a bomber pilot during and after World War 2, and his life in ‘Civy Street’, including his exploit with his ‘autogyro’ airplanes which he built at his home near Dereham. These stories including his time spent flying the famous ‘Little Nellie’ in the James Bond film, ‘You only Live Twice’, where he took the part of James Bond in place of Sean Connery! Ken spoke for so long that the staff of the Morley Club had to ask that we draw the meeting to a close as they wanted to go home. We then later visited Ken Wallis’s home for a look at his wonderful collection. We were all deeply saddened when he passed away a little while later. We have also

made visits to two breweries and to the offices and printing works of the EDP newspaper group in Norwich.
Our main purpose though is to raise funds for various local charities and good causes and, since we formed in 2010, we have raised over £6570, which has all been given to various local charities including Sheringham Woodfields School (£500), Nelson’s Journey Children’s Charity (£1700) The Walcott, Bacton and Happisburgh Flood Relief Group, including personal donations to some of the residents (a total of £1250 ), plus several other donations. In addition to this, we have also purchased a special bed for a small boy with severe medical problems, and pushchair accessories for a little girl with a rare medical condition. Every Christmas, we have been able, with the assistance of a number of local companies, to distribute Christmas hampers to a total of 55 needy families.
We also supply, free of charge, a ‘Message in a Bottle’ - if you are suffering from a constant illness, or you have to take regular medication, you can request a ‘Message in a Bottle’ either from a member of the Lions Club, or from your local GP. The message in a bottle is a small plastic container with a printed form inside, where you put down all your medical conditions and what medication you are taking. The bottle also contains two small green stickers. You fill in the details then place the bottle in the fridge or a cupboard, and put one small sticker of the outside of where you have put the bottle and the second green sticker on your front door. If you need an ambulance or paramedic, they will look for the green stickers and then can tell straightaway what your illnesses are and your medication. These details can save a lot of time and can result in saving your life. These bottles are free, so please collect yours as soon as possible. Due to various reasons, we sadly have now reduced in numbers, and we need more members, so if you are interested in becoming a member of the Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club, or would like to now more, or want a ‘Message in a Bottle,’ please contact one of the members listed below. Also please, if you see one of our members standing in the streets of North Norfolk, with a collecting tin, put a small (or large) donation in. Every penny we collect will be used for a local charity or good cause. Except in very special circumstances, we do not support any charity outside of our area, and every penny we collect goes to the local good causes. We run the club by having raffles and fines at our meetings, and a small annual subscription, and un-

Jacobs donate to About With Friends Jacobs, the engineering consultancy carrying out the Bacton Rejuvenation Project at Bacton Gas Terminal, have donated almost £500 worth of soft play equipment for the use of younger members of About With Friends.
The money was raised through a football score prediction game organised by Malcolm Lown and Mike Donovan. Workers on the BRP pay a weekly fee in a game known as The Footie Thing and at the end of the season the money is given to a charity chosen by the organisers. Jacobs have worked with About With Friends in the past and this year wanted to buy something specific for the younger members who attend school holiday schemes and the Friday night Youth Club. The charity needed some soft play equipment and this was duly provided by Jacobs.
The equipment is a selection of high quality, ultra-safe building blocks in various shapes which the youngsters – who all have a learning disability – can use to create a world of their own. Malcolm and Mike dropped by the About With Friends Base last month to hand over the equipment which was quickly pounced upon by members at a summer holiday activity.
About With Friends are also grateful for the donations of companies and individuals who help them acquire the specialist, and often expensive, equipment they need to build their services.
About With Friends is a fun, active and energetic charity based in Cromer. We offer children, young people and adults with learning disabilities the chance to lead the lives they choose. When they become part of our family they have opportunities to develop lasting friendships, engage in fun and active social activities, get involved in the community, have the chance to try new experiences and learn new skills both for life and work, but above all feel a valued part of society while enjoying life to the full.
For further information about any of our services including Ignite, the alternate Fridays youth club for 9-12 year olds, call 01263 515230.
What a great first year its been at Lune boutique; A handsome addition to Cromer’s east side
Katie, local single mum, opened Lune as an outlet for fashion accessories and costume jewellery, catering to the individual.
With a creative side... Customers’ favourites are the repairs service, where many favourite items are brought in to be mended or adjusted. Also Lune’s bespoke fascinators are highly in demand! Another product that’s proving to be most popular is Lune’s wide range of vibrant semi-permanent conditioning hair colours, the ‘Directions’ hair dye range through all the colours of the rainbow and are perfect for the bright and quirky.
So what’s to come?... With the ever popular love for vintage fashions, Lune will soon be introducing a small range of vintage/pre-loved clothes. “With a few interesting frocks to add to our collection, my vision of my little wonderland will be almost complete.”
To keep up with Lune’s range of individual goodies, like their Facebook and Instagram pages, and don’t forget to look out for their Crab and Lobster festival wheel which will be up for auction at the end of the month!
Everybody loves locally handmade, so a new feature in Lune is a section dedicated to Cromer’s local crafters, currently the resident crafters are Diane and her wonderful knitted clothes and toys, Jackie’s Decoupage whose 20 year-old skill shines through her expertly decorated pieces, and Crystal with her beautiful and interesting handmade jewellery. And more to join soon!

PRESS RELEASE 1 On 29 October 2014 Hoyl Group Limited, the tenant of the residential basement flat in the Council's municipal building at North Lodge, Cromer, sued the Council over disputed access issues in relation to the building.
2 The Council had little option but to defend Hoyl's claims. Among other things, Hoyl were claiming: (1) The right to access the basement flat through the main entrance of the Council's municipal building for the remaining 90 odd years of Hoyl's lease. The adverse impact of such a right on the value of the building, its security, and its marketability, would have been profound. (2) Alternatively full private access rights over the public garden to the rear of North Lodge. The Council were under a duty to preserve the public garden as a public amenity.
3 Hoyl's efforts to establish an internal access through the building, or alternative full access rights over the garden, failed at trial. They also abandoned other claims on the day of the trial.

4 However, the judge found that he was entitled to require the Council to provide an alternative access to the basement flat via a side wall, a remedy which had not been specifically sought by Hoyl in its claim. The judge did so on the basis of an "estoppel" based on the fact that the Council had encouraged a belief by Hoyl that they would be allowed an alternative access to the basement flat. Originally, it was Hoyl's intention that the flat should be accessed via the car park. After entering into the lease they changed their plans.
5 In spite of the fact that Hoyl failed in many aspects of its claim, and the fact that the Council had, many months prior to trial, offered to grant the side access that was ultimately ordered by the trial judge (albeit on a payment of a contribution by Hoyl to the Council's wasted costs for dealing with many aspects of the claim) the judge nonetheless ordered the Council to pay all of Hoyl's trial costs.
6 The Council appealed the trial judge's finding in relation to the estoppel, among other things, on the basis that Hoyl had not been encouraged to believe that they were entitled to an alternative access. In particular, the work ultimately carried out by Hoyl in relation to the basement flat (which was done before the licence for alterations was signed and therefore in breach of the lease) included a "viable and practicable" access via the car park.
7 The Council are disappointed with the outcome of the appeal. Nonetheless, it is important to note that the Court of Appeal have not overruled the trial judge's decision in relation to the internal staircase and the issue of private access over the garden, and the Council's property rights in relation to these matters have been preserved. The integrity of the public open space is retained for the people of Cromer and the value of the council’s property is safeguarded, as is the security of the businesses whose rents make a significant contribution to the town’s annual budget.
North Lodge Park – A Fresh Approach
North Lodge Park’s café will be open for business from Friday August 7 after North Norfolk District Council met with Friends of North Lodge Park yesterday, Thursday. North Norfolk District Council has gifted the café free of charge to the Friends to operate for a four month period, the remainder of the summer season. Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council said: “The council is very keen to see something up and running at North Lodge Park as quickly as possible and it’s a good opportunity for the Friends to get involved and get the café open for business. “I hope that the public gives the Friends the support they deserve; and it feels very good to be able to get the café open once again.” As well as the café the Friends group will be looking to improve the Rose Garden and hedges nearby the cafe as well as the bowling green area. The Friends of North Lodge Park were handed the keys to the café yesterday afternoon after the morning meeting, and will be in the café over the weekend cleaning and painting the interior preparing it for the grand public opening. Cllr John Rest, Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets added: “It feels really good to be working with the Friends and enabling the café to reopen and be an attraction for everyone to enjoy this summer.”

Norfolk Golf Day Raises £5,000 for Youth Project A charity golf day has teed up thousands of pounds for a much in-demand youth project in north norfolk.
It means the total amount raised for the charity by local businessman Mr Abbs – who is a Director of Crayford and Abbs Nissan
Jonathan Moore, General Manager of Royal Cromer Golf Club; Kevin Abbs, member of the North Norfolk Rotary Club and Director at Crayford and Abbs Nissan; Mark Heveran, Head Greenkeeper at Royal Cromer Golf Club; and Ben Palmer, Director of Finance at Anglian Radio, which owns North Norfolk Radio

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club
Lynn. The green was much smaller and in effect only one length of jack could be played. Sorry if that sounds too much of an excuse – why should that matter you may ask. Come up and see us sometime and we will explain. Anyhow we reversed the score of the previous week and lost 2 – 7. The NANSA League team had a home game against Holt Swallows and for the first time this season suffered a heavy defeat 0 – 8. However the team took a deep breath and were ready for the next home game. This was against Suffield Park Eagles and they bounced back with a 6 – 2 win. Then there was a bit of a mix up of a game away against Sheringham Morley Panthers. It was raining when the Cromer players arrived and some of the home team did not want to play. Then there was some discussion about playing only 12 ends but seems no decision was made. So the game commenced. When 12 ends had been reached some home players wanted to finish. Nobody knew what was happening. The two captains then discussed and the game was declared completed. You can do that within the rules. End result a 7 – 1 win for Cromer. Bernice will be making the draw for the Ladies Rose Bowls which will be played on Saturday 8th August. This is a mixed Pairs competition with the winning lady getting the trophy. Did you know that the hat Bernice wears is a white ‘bakers’ hat? On Carnival Day the clubhouse will be open and refreshments will be available. We shall also have ‘Holes for Bowls’ on the green

Tales from the Bowling Green ...
…where we welcomed Russell Park BC from Bedford. They came by coach and it rained all the way to Cromer. However by 12.00pm the sun had broken through although the wind was still very strong. Later blue sky became the order of the afternoon and a grand game of bowls was had by all. Once again the cafes in the town and the End Of The Pier Show were visited. I think that we may be able to add this team to our regular list of visitors to the Gem of The Norfolk Coast – yes I do prefer the old name as you come into the town. Our Hansells League team only had one game in the last two week period and that resulted in a very convincing 4 – 1 win away against Norfolk Bowling Club ‘C’. Phil and Bridget I have discovered really like Bristol cream Sherry. That does not seem like the normal drink for a lager man. Mind you it may explain the saga of Bridget’s lost bracelet. Not on her wrist, not in handbag. Couldn’t be found anywhere on the walk home even though high quality torches were being used to search. Next morning a glint in the wash basin. Yes there it was down the plughole. Phil to the rescue and recovered from the U-bend. Neil’s Cromer Crabs were at home against Foulsham in the Federation Premier League and managed a very creditable 7 – 2 win. The team then travelled to Kings Lynn to play on a very challenging green at South

for a small fee. You have 4 bowls and try to get the best score by bowling to numbered holes. Normally very attractive for families as Dads normally think they can do better than their children – but it doesn’t always work out that way! This is fund raising for the club to enable us to maintain the green. Hope to see you there.
I now list the forthcoming games that you may wish to come and watch and support. Basically league games will have finished other than a couple of away games from now onwards.
