CROMER IN BLOOM ANNUAL COMPETITION
Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

However, he wished to thank everyone he spoke to while judging for their welcome and contribution to making Cromer a prettier place. Everyone deserves credit for their gardens and containers. It was very difficult to choose in some classes. He also said it is such a pity that more people do not enter. Continued on page 4...

help of assorted granddaughters) in aid of a Malawian Hospital Charity and some of which is used in our restaurant.
Add to a saucepan with the six pints of water.
And now the Cromer Times can exclusively publish her secret recipe.
Over the course of the season we are lucky enough to receive several compliments for our food and accommodation, but the majority are for our absolutely wonderful marmalade, served up for breakfast and even finding its way into the odd dish on the à la carte.
The marmalade is handmade on site by Ann Graveling, who for 28 years cooked, cleaned and basically ran the Grove as well as cooking for, cleaning up after and basically running a family of five children and a husband at the same time. A marvellous effort! And now, in retirement, Ann creates the most fantastic marmalade, some of which is sold (with the
Simmer for between 60 and 90 minutes until the skin is soft.
If you want to try some of Ann’s marmalade then either buy a jar from the entrance to number 97 Overstrand Road, or of course pop in and see us for dinner – 01263512412 to book!
Ingredients (to make approximately 10bls of marmalade) 2 ruby grapefruit 2 large oranges 2 large lemons 6 pints of water 6lb sugar
Cut and juice your fruit, and shred the skin.

Steam in Miniature
The Bure Valley Railway continues to celebrate its 25th anniversary year with an event on 26th and 27th September 2015 which celebrates the heritage of steam in a small scale. Alongside our home fleet of 15” engines purpose built for line, we will have two visiting engines: “Northern Rock” from Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway and “No. 24” Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway.
There will be a special intensive timetable in operation throughout the weekend to allow visitors the opportunity to see as many different locomotives as possible hard at work over the nine miles between Aylsham and Wroxham.
In addition, we will have a selection of models in different scales down to “N” gauge.
Andrew Barnes, Director, says “this event will give railway enthusiasts and families alike a chance to see a collection steam engines on display and in operation in various gauges”.
Train fares allow unlimited travel on the day of issue. Adults £12.50, Children £6.50 and Under 5s Free. No prior booking required.

Concert Review
What a joy it was on walking into North Lodge Park to hear the sounds of a young jazz ensemble playing Jerome Kern’s ‘All the Things You Are’ to a very good number of people – including holidaymakers in family groups and many local people, all of whom I’m sure were admiring the skill of these superb musicians performing under a colourful gazebo and bringing a real touch of summer to a place which has suddenly burst into life, thanks to the initiative of The Friends of North Lodge Park, all have whom have the wellbeing of one of Cromer’s amenities at heart. The afternoon was a stark example of what can be done in a very short space of time to rescue our Park before is slides in to something best forgotten.
The young artists are aptly named The Jefford Brothers as three of them 10
are brothers and were engaged to play in the Park by Emma Dale, one of the leading lights of The Friends, proving to be an outstanding success and it was fabulous to see the reopened café bursting at its seams! The five musicians – George Jefford (piano), Charlie Jefford (bass), James Jefford (alto/tenor sax), Aaron Hollinger (drums) and Grace Thomas (vocals) – played their arrangements of popular jazz standards in which each player gave improvisatory performances of the highest quality. Here the skill of improvisation is often not realised by many, as one has to be able to construct one’s own musical ideas over chord progressions, which requires lots of practice and knowledge of harmonies and scales etc. This group had all this at such a young age – congratulations to their teachers indeed!
One could leave the Park with a lighter heart realising all is not lost. Well done all responsible for all the things you have achieved.

Norfolk Managers Boost their Skills
Two managers from Crayford and Abbs in Norfolk have successfully completed a Leadership and Management Programme. Kevin Abbs, Director of Crayford and Abbs, commissioned the programme with Callander Associates at the beginning of this year.
Rupert Fox (Sales Manager) and Mark Wright (After Sales Manager) have worked with Simon Arthur of Callander Associates on the programme.
“Mark and Rupert were able to combine their specialist knowledge with a variety of management tools and feedback and have taken their day to day work to another level. Their aim, and mine, is to make customers very happy. Happy customers come back and they tell others” said Simon.
The programme provides practical skills and tools which can be used immediately with customers, staff and colleagues.
Mark Wright, Rupert Fox, Simon Arthur and Kevin Abbs.
Kevin Abbs has seen immediate and ongoing results from the programme: “We have been very pleased to be associated with Callander Associates and in particular working with Simon Arthur. The confidence this course has given both Rupert and Mark has been immeasurable and is reflected by the overall team morale and the progress, we as a business, has made this year!”
“We have been so pleased with the training we have received from Callander Associates we are rolling out a CPD programme for the rest of the team to ensure we continue to invest in the future of both our team and as a business.” Simon Arthur can be contacted by email: simon@simonjarthur.com
Eco-Driving Challenge
The Challenge is on at Crayford & Abbs - be the most economical driver of a Nissan Leaf and win £250.
Order what you want, when you want. No contract. No commitment. No strings attached.
The Nissan Leaf Challenge is already happening at Crayford & Abbs and ends on the weekend of September 5th-6th, linked with North Norfolk District Council's Greenbui!d, the region's biggest green lifestyle event, at Felbrigg Hall.
The Leaf having a real world range of 80 to 90 miles, depending on driving style, is often assumed to be impractical and lacking from infrastructure so Crayford and Abbs have developed this challenge to dispel some of these fears!
The idea of the challenge is to drive at normal speeds whilst maximising opportunities to re-generate the battery charge and increase the maximum range. The challenge takes about an hour and a half and the course takes in , Weybourne, Wells and Fakenham, arriving back at Bodham.

Director Kevin Abbs said, "The winner would be the driver who produced the best return and maximised regenerative charging. We want to encourage people to remember that the Nissan Leaf can be driven at the speed limit," he said. "We are just trying to promote green energy and the benefits of driving a Leaf. For the record, I started with a range of 98 miles and finished the 40.3-mile route with a range of 56 miles so I used an extra 1.7 miles of charge but many drivers have had a positive result, using less range than the route's distance."
One of those was Crayford's own Mark Wright, who started on 65 mile remaining charge – completes 40.4 miles and returns still showing 42 miles remaining!
"I think that is unbeatable," commented Kevin, "But there is only one way to find out - come and try the Challenge!"
Anyone interested in trying the Nissan Leaf Challenge should telephone Crayford and Abbs on O1263 588160, email kevin@ crayfordandabbs. co.uk, or visit the dealership in Gypsies Lane, Bodham. Cromer Times 477 September 5th 2015

CROMER Carnival PARADE
Exceptional weather and the biggest crowds at the Carnival in years set the stage for a spectacular parade. Winners included a colossal pirate ship representing In Touch Systems, which included an imposing giant skull at the stern, and an exhaustively detailed Japanese themed trailer representing Dunstable Arms, which became the overall winner of the event.
Some of the most memorable in the cavalcade included an unusually warlike gang of native Americans, a live rock band, and a giant fish that looked as if it were literally afloat. In the words of Carnival Chairman, Tony
)
#
*
Shipp “one of the better parades in several years, with a good standard of entry and a nice variety of floats”.
Other events performed on Carnival Day included a sweeping aerial display from The Blades and a show of many terrifying and incendiary stunts performed by The Royal Signals Motorcycle Display Team.
Tony wishes to thank everybody who responded to the call to join in with this year’s Carnival and hopes that future Carnivals can meet the new benchmark set by this year’s event.

Dear Margaret,
Another successful evening in the Cromer Carnival Marquee on the Tuesday of Carnival week. We started the evening off with a tribute to the founder of this bingo, Austin Fisher, who died on 1 December last year aged 91 years. We gave all customers a free stand up sit down game in memory of Austin as it was one of his favourites – the winner received a special prize presented by Austin’s great grandchildren Lauren and Jack Fisher. We would like to thank everyone who came along and to all the shops, businesses and friends who donated prizes for the raffle. This year we made a profit of £1294.50 just on the raffle, which goes into the Carnival Fund. Yours sincerely, Trevor & Valerie Pells, Jim & Janice Woolston

Will Your Will Work?
Written by Fiona Hewitt - Director and Head of Private Client Services at Hayes + Storr
The recent case of Ilott v Mitson gave rise to some sensationalist media coverage and comment “Where there’s a Will… the person who wrote it may not get their way” (the Guardian); and “ ‘Your Will can be ignored’ say Judges” (Daily Telegraph) are just two examples.
The facts of the case were briefly as follows: Melita Jackson died in 2004, leaving her estate of almost £500,000 to charities. Her only daughter, Heather Ilott, a 50 year old mother of 5, was disinherited. Mrs Ilott had fallen out with her mother when she eloped at the age of 17. At the time of her mother’s death she was living in a rented house, and was reliant on state benefits.
Hayes + Storr – All you’ll ever need!

Mrs Ilott made a claim against her mother’s estate, and was initially awarded £50,000. She appealed against this in the High Court on the grounds that it was too little, but the original order was then overturned in favour of the charities. When she appealed again, the Court of Appeal decided that she should receive a payment from the estate, and in the end she was awarded around a third of the estate.
Despite the media fuss over this and other similar recent cases, claims by disinherited children are nothing new. Faced with such claims, the court must take into account a number of factors, including the financial resources and needs of the applicant and beneficiaries, the deceased’s obligations and responsibilities to both the applicant and other beneficiaries, and any relevant disabilities. The conduct of the parties can also be taken into account.
Mrs Ilott and her family were in financial need. Mrs Jackson had no particular connection to the charities she chose to benefit, and the Judge decided that she had acted out of spite rather than because she wanted to support their work. As for conduct, Mrs Ilott had made some
attempts at reconciliation with her mother which had been rejected, and it was felt that the main cause of the broken relationship was Mrs Jackson herself.
It remains to be seen how much influence this case will have over future decisions, and all cases of this sort depend on the individual facts. However, the decision to award such a significant sum to someone who was otherwise completely disinherited has caused some unease for both lawyers and their clients. It is not uncommon to want to exclude certain family members from benefitting from an estate. If you decide to do this and you think it may cause problems, it is advisable to take the following steps: 1. Have a professionally drafted Will in place, clearly and unambiguously setting out your intentions.
2. Make sure you tell your legal advisor all the facts and background so they can advise you properly on the risks and safeguards.
3. Leave a letter of wishes with your Will, explaining not only why you wish to exclude someone from the Will (or give them only a minimal gift), but also why you particularly wish to pass your estate to your chosen beneficiaries.

RESCUE WOODEN BOATS
Dunkirk Little Ship and former lifeboat Lucy Lavers major restoration was completed by charity Rescue Wooden Boats in time for her to join 54 other Little Ships to make the memorable return trip to Dunkirk in May for the 75th anniversary of the evacuation of troops from the beaches. Over 200 school children came aboard her on her way to Dunkirk to learn about her story as well as many hundred members of the public. In June she celebrated her homecoming to Wells-next-the-Sea where she now lives.
You can see details and photos of both her restoration and her Dunkirk voyage on our website www.rescuewoodenboats.com and at the Visitor Centre in Stiffkey NR23 1QF open weekends 10 – 4. Do come and have a look! You can also buy gifts, T shirts, sweatshirts, books, DVDs and some Lucy Lavers memorabilia there.
You can experience being on Lucy Lavers – there are occasional heritage trips Wells Harbour which you can book by contacting Kate on info@rescuewoodenboats.com or 07920 760238 We are now planning our next projects - further heritage fishing boats to restore and stories to be told. Do support us with a donation or by becoming a Friend. Details on the website www.rescuewoodenboats.com or contact Kate.

Cromer Times 477 September 5th 2015
North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
At long last the phone line has been repaired and no more calls are being lost.
The young cat on the car park in Aylsham has now been caught and is being held safe until she can be neutered. Her kitten was also trapped and has found a new home.
In the last issue I also mentioned that Tockey and Missy, two of our golden oldies, had been reserved and waiting for some decorating to be done before they went to their new home. Unfortunately, the people concerned had a change of heart, so these two lovely girls were put up for adoption once again. I am happy to be able to advise you that a discerning gentleman was delighted to see they were once again available and, as a consequence, Tockey and Missy have now left for their new home. Hopefully, someone will come along soon and offer a home to Benji too.
A recent article in ‘The Cat’ the magazine produced by Cats Protection for volunteers addressed a query on heart murmurs in cats and we know from experience how worried people are when advised their cat has one. The article went on to state that one study of heart murmurs showed that around a third of cats do have one, that the murmur can come and go, and if heard one day may not be apparent the next. It also may only be heard when a cat is particularly stressed. The indications are that about 50 per cent of healthy cats with a murmur will have no underlying disease; it may stem from another unrelated disease to the heart or may even be a completely insignificant “innocent murmur”. Heart murmurs are graded according to their severity and, again, can vary from day to day. We often see kittens with a murmur when they have their first vaccination and find this has completely disappeared when they have the second. If we have a cat or kitten in care which
has a murmur we are always guided by our vets as to whether any further investigations are needed. If you have a cat that has a murmur or are interested in reading more about it, Cats Protection does produce a small booklet titled “Heart murmurs and heart disease” which gives a little more information on this subject. We usually have a small stock of these available at our major events, so please do not hesitate to ask if you would like one.

HOLDING THE CROMER LINE!
A fun-packed event offering charity and vintage stalls, musical entertainment and a choice between two Wartime-themed films – all on offer on Friday 18th September to bring a taste of 1940s “Blitz spirit” to Cromer, as well as supporting two great local charities.
Holding The Cromer Line will kick off at 4.00pm in Hans Place, Cromer, with charity and vintage stalls selling 1940s books, magazines, memorabilia, clothing, accessories and traditional sweets and cakes. The Street Fair will be open to all, and there is still space for a few more charity stalls to come and raise funds for their cause.
Ticket-holders for the main event at Cromer Regal Movieplex Cinema will enjoy a 1940s-style cocktail and light rations whilst listening to the nostalgic music of swing singers “The Dotty Duo”. Guests will browse 1940s memorabilia and the World War One Flanders display created by About With Friends and Halsey House as part of their recent Heritage Project, before choosing one of two great Wartime-themed films; either “A Matter of Life and Death”, a surreal romantic movie starring David Niven and Kim Hunter, or the classic “Reach for the Sky”, which tells the story of Wartime ace fighter pilot Douglas Bader.
Holding the Cromer Line has been set up by Reel Diva, a partnership between Cromer resident Sheila Parish, who owns Lily Likes… Vintage Store in Sheringham, and Suzanne Bell, an experienced costume designer who also runs No. 1 Dressing Room, a vintage costume hire business. A retiring collection will be held for local disability charity About With Friends and Royal British Legion home Halsey House, Cromer. Helen Dalton-Hare, CEO of About With Friends, is delighted to be involved in this unique occasion; “ We really appreciate the support of Reel Diva and look forward to enjoying a fantastic Wartime event with them and our friends from Halsey House”.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club
went to Brenda Scott and Jack Purvis. After the formalities players enjoyed a great buffet prepared by club members. On Carnival Day morning we tried it again and this time the winners were John Blackburn with Runner Up Tony Boud with two bowlers receiving the “wooden spoon” Gay Boud and Russell Winterbone. During the games and afterwards Janice Allard and her kitchen crew were providing teas, coffees, biscuits, hot dogs rolls and much more. A raffle was held and Phil was heard to cry “Don’t take the lager” and then he had a winning ticket and took it himself. His shirt looked very much like our club table cloths but he insisted it was a genuine Ben Sherman. On the green we had our Holes for Bowls competition. Bob Allard and Phil Toner took charge for a long time inviting passers-by of all ages to try their luck at this fairground style competition. A lot of family entertainment was had by all. I was so glad the weather treated us and the Carnival so well particularly after the long wet day on the Tuesday. A number of members returned to watch the Carnival Parade from the club house, being able to stand and look over the well-cut hedges which had been provided by John and Krissy.
Tales from the Bowling Green ...
...where the sun has been shining and the green has been playing well thanks again to Neil, Bob and John. Although I do hope we will soon be able to use the irrigation system again.
Club Captain Keith has been organising the last few friendly games of the season and Janice, Hazel and Gloria have been working hard in the kitchen. Hazel has an injury to her arm which we all hope recovers soon. Many other people help with the running of the club and every member works for the best continuing development of the club. This has been a great season. I hope I have not offended anyone if I have not named them individually. In the NANSA League game away against Holt Swallows the result was a disappointing 0 – 8 defeat, then away against Overstrand in the rearranged match on a very wet green with continuing drizzle I regret the result was very similar, a 1 – 7 defeat. There is now only one game to go in this league and after that the NANSA league will also have come to an end. Captain Roger Purser, who has been doing a splendid job again this season, is I hope pleased with the overall outcome of the season although he always hopes for better! He picks the team, arranges transport, plays some weeks and if he does not select himself is always in attendance at the matches in club shirt ready to play if anyone does not arrive. Thanks Roger. Club members took part in another two more Australian Pairs competitions. On Presidents Day President Keith, - yes he is also Club Captain this year! – organised it and this was won by Edna Bunkle with Runner Up Keith Pantling. A prize was also given to the two players with the worst scores, with the school report comment “Must try better” and these
