Holding the Cromer Line

Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

The Holding the Cromer Line event held on 18 September was a great success and well supported.

Described as a ‘1940s cinema experience’, an array of beautifullyattired guests sipped cocktails and enjoyed the fabulous 40s-style singing of The Dotty Duo, before watching a classic wartime-themed film at the town’s Regal Movieplex, whilst munching on sweet "rations".

The Street Fair was equally successful, with charity stalls run by Sheringham & Cromer Rotary Club, About With Friends and Halsey House, alongside vintage stands selling sweets, bric-a-brac and accessories attracting lots of visitors. Continued on page 4...

A raffle was held in support of About With Friends and Halsey House, but unfortunately two of the winning tickets had a name but no contact details on them so if Helen Mitchel and Molly Galler are reading this, you have won a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates respectively! The first of our autumn talks was given by Dr David Gurney, head of Norfolk County Council’s Historic Environment Service. This used to be called the Archaeology Unit and those attending were surprised to hear that it no longer undertakes archaeological digs on a regular basis but tenders out work to private companies who do the work on the council’s behalf. The Historic Environment Service has the responsibility of keeping an eye on all aspects of archaeology and local heritage and most of Dr Gurney’s talk was spent outlining what this involves.

The service has a planning remit and in any year investigates up to 400 applications that touch on its work. The service advises farmers and landowners on the management of sites on their land and can help with applications for grants to help towards protecting these sites. It looks after a number of heritage assets including windmills and wind pumps. An air photograph library containing 85000 images is maintained and work on digitally mapping sites and important topographical features is ongoing. About 15000 objects are identified and recorded each year, many of them the result of work by metal detectorists who have a very healthy relationship with the service.

HISTORIC TALKS

Recent work undertaken on behalf of the Historic Environment Service has added to our knowledge of the Roman fort at Brancaster, has discovered the foundations of the Charnel Chapel under the Saturday Market Place in King’s Lynn and protected practice trenches built at Winterton during the First World War. A lot of work is currently being done on the former RAF station at Coltishall, including the preservation of murals painted during the first Gulf War in the early 1990s. Not all features in need of protection have to be very old.

Anyone wishing to get a fuller picture of the work of the service can find details at www.heritage.norfolk.gov.uk.

Chocolate Fondant here and there.

Autumn is sometimes seen as a slightly depressing season as the nights get longer and the days become shorter, but we absolutely love it here at the Grove. We always look forward to launching our Autumn Menu - an emphasis on delicious garden produce, succulent game and meats from Cromer's very own master butcher Icarus Hines - and of course this is the perfect period for the odd indulgent dessert

Cocktails with Friends

This lovely chocolate fondant makes a guest appearance on various party menus throughout the year, and it's a rewarding and fairly straightforward dish to make at home. So treat yourself with a little bit of chocolate magic in front of your roaring fire and don't forget to come and see us for the Autumn Menu from 12th October! Ingredients 5 eggs 3 egg yolks 150g caster sugar 250g unsalted butter 300g plain cooking chocolate 70g plain flour 1 vanilla pod

About With Friends threw a cocktail party for some of its volunteers last month at its Community Café in Tucker Street, Cromer.

Around 25 people turned up to be served a range of cocktails mixed my AWF member Kim James which included Mohitos and Blue Lagoons along with their mocktail (non-alcoholic) equivalents. Cromer Morrisons provided some of the ingredients for the cocktails. There was also a stunning array of canapes made by the café staff and served by member Matt Pratt. Chief Executive Helen Dalton-Hare, Volunteer Co-ordinator Su Lee and several other staff members popped in to say a big thank you to the volunteers. Like many charities, About With Friends relies on volunteers to supplement its services. Without them the charity couldn’t function. Development manager Steve Smith said “It’s not just the extra pairs of hands; our volunteers bring a range of skills and passions to the organisation which benefit our members. For instance, the amazing range of candles our Workskills team makes and sells is only possible because Alan, one of our regular volunteers is a master candle-maker.” About With Friends uses volunteers across all its services, which means there are vacancies seven days a week daytime and evenings. This may involve supporting members in work-related tasks such as catering or gardening, supporting children and young people at play, accompanying adults on social outings or helping them with their shopping or accounts. Some volunteers come in regularly two or three times a week, whilst others only volunteer once a month or so. For many, volunteering has been a stepping stone to finding paid work in the sector. If you are interested in volunteering at About With Friends please contact Su Lee on 01263 515230 or SuLee@aboutwithfriends.co.uk About With Friends is a fun, active and energetic charity based in Cromer. We offer children, young people and adults with learning disabilities the chance to lead the lives they choose. When they become part of our family they have opportunities to develop lasting friendships; engage in fun and active social activities; get involved in the community; have the chance to try new experiences; learn new skills both for life and work; but above all feel a valued part of society while enjoying life to the full.

Method 1. Cut the chocolate into small chucks 2. Melt chocolate and butter over a Bain Marie 3. Beat eggs, egg yolks, vanilla and sugar until thick, then add the chocolate mix 4. Sift in the flour 5. Pour the mix into greased and floured moulds and refrigerate for 3 hours 6. Bake in the oven at 180c until the top starts to crisp up 7. Serve with clotted cream or vanilla ice cream

THE STRAND CLUB

We met on 9 September after our summer break, raring to go! There were 15 members present and one visitor who happened to be Jim Begley, well known to all and therefore not seeming like a visitor at all! We were also delighted to welcome four ladies from Glendon House with two able helpers.

Gratitude was extended to all who helped on 12 August, when our place in the Pavilion was taken by Jim Begley who ran an awareness session for the Overstrand & Cromer Community First Responders. This went well and our rent for that month was easily covered by funds raised. Our thanks to Jim.

We are in the process of producing our own calendar for next year which when finished will cost £3.50. This is a bargain considering how completely original it is. It will feature animals met or owned by members and is funny and delightful in equal measure. Please inform Glo how many you will require so that she knows how many in total should be printed. Christmas cards will also be produced for sale - price unknown as yet - which will show Jackie's adorable little dog, Beau, wearing his hat!

Our speaker was then welcomed. Clive Sanham runs PC Simple in Sheringham and talked to us about computer basics - a much needed and rather scary topic. Clive spoke in a very entertaining manner. He had us laughing but he also increased our knowledge and took away the mystique that seems to surround computing to our generation. "What is IT?" he asked. "Information Technology!" called out Jackie. "That's right! Well done! IT is everywhere, we can't escape IT, we can't avoid IT, the young can do IT without blinking twice" and so he went, entertaining and informing us and making the afternoon fly by. We are grateful to him and hope he gets many takers in his bid to educate the over-55s in computer skills. We can recommend him. Our next meeting will be on 14th October in the Pavilion as usual. It begins at the usual time of 2.30 and will include a cream tea, competition and bring and buy. It will cost £3 at the door for members and visitors alike, which must be given to Josie as soon as possible beforehand so that she knows how many are coming and therefore how many scones to make! The competition is for the scariest or silliest Halloween mask or hat. There will be a raffle as usual as well as the bring and buy table. Please come and have fun. You will be most welcome to join us. Please give your name and £3 to Josie 01263 579748 as soon as possible to give her fair warning as to how many she will be catering for.

For further information please contact our joint Programme Co-ordinators Glo on 01263 576539 or Chris on 01263 579433.

OVERSTRAND EVENING WI

Our informal craft meeting in August was a productive one, with members sat round chatting and knitting six inch squares. These, along with squares knitted prior and after the meeting, will be made into a colourful blanket. Earlier in the month a group of members enjoyed the thriller, The Late Edwina Black at Sheringham Little Theatre. WINDOW CLEANING Our September meeting coincided with the 100th Anniversary of the very first WI meeting in the UK. There have been various celeWater Fed Pole System brations nationwide during the year and our group has something commemorative DOMESTIC AND BUSINESS planned for Overstrand Fully Insured, Friendly and Reliable later this year. We celebrated in traditional WI CONSERVATORY ROOFS style with a birthday ALSO CLEANED cake as well as singing ‘Jerusalem’. Our Call Gary on 07879 007440 speaker for this month was one of our village First Responders, Jim Begley. Jim talked with ease as he explained the role of First Responders, their connection with the Ambulance Service and the importance of defibrillators within communities. We all received a ‘Lions Message in a Bottle’. This is a simple way of keeping personal and medical details in a standard format, in a common location (the fridge), so that these can be easily accessed by emergency services. We will be meeting on 19 October in the car park at Blickling Hall at 10.30am for a walk in the grounds. This will be followed by Hilary Cox’s talk about ‘My Interesting Life’ at our meeting on 21 October. We welcome visitors and prospective new members (you Unit 2D Middlebrook Way, do not have to be an Overstrand resident to join us) to our walks and monthly meetings. Our meetings are on the third Wednesday of Cromer the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand.

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is delighted to announce the re-opening of ‘Tides’ restaurant on award-winning Cromer Pier. Work totalling £575,000 has been completed since the surge in 2013 to make significant structural repairs to the areas underneath the box office, gift shop, toilets and the restaurant and a full refurbishment programme of these facilities, with the opening of the restaurant is now complete. HANDYMAN Clint Brown Property Services

The first meeting after our summer break was led by our President Carol Selwyn. After an enjoyable meal the speaker was Nikki Morris the Deputy CEO of the Big C Norwich, our chosen charity for the coming year.

Nikki was a very informative speaker and told us of many changes since the Big C was formed 35 years ago, starting with connections to the N & N Hospital and the number of centres that have been established throughout Norfolk. Then the exciting news that the following day 4 September a new group had been formed to meet at Cromer Hospital. Much work had gone into this new centre and it will save many people having to travel the N & N Hospital.

Cromer coast protection work re-starts

The final phase of the £8m ‘Cromer Coast Protection’ scheme has started. Work will take place on the seafront from September to March 2016.

The scheme has been designed not only to maintain the existing level of defence, but also to withstand many years of predicted sea level rise. This final stage will include work at the west end, the parapet walls including around the Pier forecourt, underneath the Pier and promenade surfacing.

The sea defences at Cromer protect the town from the force of the North Sea. They were built in various phases as the town expanded, the earliest dating back to 1836. Over the years, the walls and groynes have withstood many storms and have been maintained, enhanced and repaired as and when required. The coast protection scheme will reduce the impact of the sea along the Cromer frontage as well as helping to maintain a stable beach in front of the

-

seawalls for future years. The historical significance of some of the structures has been carefully taken in to consideration and the overall character of the promenade should not change.

Although Pedestrian access to the Pier and promenade will remain during the work, parking will be by license holders only and signage will be installed to direct visitors away from work areas when required. Cromer will remain open for business and the engineering operations are a spectacle that can be viewed from many cliff top vantage points. Work will not be carried out for two weeks over the Christmas holiday period.

Jazz at The Hub

Ray Simmons and Ron Hockett have spanned musical genres. Ray was principal trumpet with the Royal Philharmonic for nearly 20 years and Ron was lead saxophonist and clarinet soloist with the “Presidents Own” U.S. Marine Band in Washington for nearly 30 years. They have both played with some of the greatest names in jazz including Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich, Bobby Hackett, Bud Freeman and Jimmy McPartland. The trio playing with Ray and Ron will be Simon Brown (piano), Ivars Galenieks (double bass) and Brian McAllister (drums). They are highly accomplished in their field and regularly accompany top British and international artists. We are fortunate to have jazz musicians of this quality living and playing in the region and on 25 October you have the opportunity of seeing and hearing them at The Hub (Sheringham Little Theatre) which, for this performance, moves into the auditorium. The concert starts at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £10 and are available from the box office Tel: 01263 822347 or online at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Increase of Inheritance Tax allowance to £1 million where home inherited by descendants Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr “A family home is likely to remain the primary asset for many middle-income taxpayers. Fortunately there are new provisions in the Finance Bill 2015 that provide significant potential benefits to tax-payers leaving their home to descendants.” So says the Government’s preamble to the Finance Bill 2015. It must, of course, be passed by Parliament in order to become law. The small print is far from straight-forward and this is not the universal panacea that it might first seem.

The Finance Bill 2015 inserts a new section into the

Animal Magic Dog Lends a Helping Paw to Local Stray Dogs

drawal of the new band for estates valued at more than £2,000,000.

Inheritance Act 1984. It will provide an extra Nil Rate Band if the home passes to descendants. It will apply only to deaths after 6th April 2017.

The effect should eventually be to increase the Nil Rate Band for a home-owning married couple (or civil partners) to £1,000,000.

The relief will start to take effect in April 2017. It will be phased in, starting with an additional £100,000 in 2017, £125,000 in 2018, £150,000 in 2019 and then the final £175,000 in 2020. The ordinary Nil Rate Band of £325,000 will remain frozen until April 2021.

Members of Animal Magic Dog Club took part in their ‘Feed a Norfolk Stray Month’ which saw the club and its members donate over 200 kilos of dog food to local homeless dogs.

The food was donated to Norfolk Strays, a local organisation dedicated to saving dogs who find themselves in the dog pound. Without them, after seven days, dogs remaining unclaimed would sadly be put to sleep. Over the past eighteen months they have saved over 200 dogs, who are now happily living in new homes and Animal Magic are delighted to support such a worthwhile cause.

Norfolk Strays is ran by a small team of dedicated volunteers. To find out more or to make a donation please contact norfolkstraydogs@gmail.com or visit their Facebook page Norfolk Strays needing urgent rescue spaces.

Pictured with just a small amount of the donated food is Tash Rust from Norfolk Strays with Tia who is licking her lips in the hope that all this food is for her, with Fiona Leadbetter from Animal Magic Dog Club.

The home must pass to a direct descendant of the deceased, which includes step-children but not unmarried partners who lived at the property with the deceased.

To avoid those who sell their homes, to downsize or to move into care or to live with relatives, being treated unfairly, it is proposed that legislation will be included in the 2016 Finance Bill to extend this relief where the deceased downsized or ceased to own a residence on or after 8th July 2015. The provisions do not come into effect until 6 April 2017 and so it remains necessary to consider other options for effective succession tax-planning for the family home in the interim. THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER HOPS IN FIELDS AND GARDENS

When we think of hops it is probably beer and hop fields that spring to mind but it is also an appealing and useful garden plant.

The traditional hop field, a forest of poles the height of three men, supporting a cat’s-cradle of wires, is an extraordinary scene with no parallels in English agriculture. It is hard to imagine the landscape in the main growing areas of Kent, Sussex, Hertfordshire and Worcestershire at the peak of hop growing in the 1870s, when nearly 72,000 acres were under cultivation.

The hop is a native wild plant of hedgerows and scrub but it was not until Flemish weavers settling in the weald of Kent in the 1520s introduced new varieties of hops together with cultivation and brewing techniques that hop growing developed. At the beginning of September the aromatic cones of the female plant are ripe for picking. Many hands were needed and it became traditional for families from London’s East End, gypsies, itinerant workers and local residents to spend

three to four weeks ‘hopping’ in Kent and Sussex. The hoppers were badly paid and provided with little in the way of shelter. Dermatitis sometimes results from harvesting hops and although few cases required medical treatment, an estimated 3% of the workers suffered some type of skin lesions on the face, hands and legs. Hops are also toxic to dogs!

At first hops were used because they prolonged the life of beer but their alpha acids also impart bitterness and their volatile oils give flavour and aroma. Each variety has unique qualities that give beers their range of tastes. By 2003 the acreage of hops in the UK had fallen to 3,600 acres on only 95 farms. Today hops are more likely to be seen in gardens with their highly coloured, golden or attractively variegated foliage trained over a fence or trellis or into a large shrub or small tree. The flowers/hops are useful for dried flower arrangements or you can consider brewing your own beer. Hop plants are hardy perennials and should be grown in the garden in moist but well drained, moderately fertile soil in sun or partial shade.

The basic variety is Humulus lupulus a rampant climber with oppositely held, green, lobed leaves on bristly stems. Rather coarse for the garden, but it may be of use in wilder areas for covering unattractive structures. The forms with coloured leaves are those most often seen, such as ‘Aurea’

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY

which has fine golden foliage that is especially eye-catching in spring. Both male and female plants are in cultivation; the male is more commonly grown but the female is more desirable with its attractive flower heads in summer. Other varieties to look for include ‘Diva’, ‘Prima Donna’ and ‘Taff’s Variegated’.

To grow this plant sow seed at 15-18 degrees centigrade in spring, it is also possible to take cuttings. Hops are subject to Verticillium wilt. Hops are therefore well worth growing, for covering fences or trellises, for dried flower arranging and for brewing your own beer and if that is not enough hops are used in herbal medicine in a way similar to valerian, as a treatment for anxiety, restlessness and insomnia. A pillow filled with hops is a popular folk remedy for sleeplessness. It is believed that a hop pillow cured the insomnia suffered by King George III. Bob Wilkinson

section. Judith Marley The first meeting after our summer break was the members’ autumn show. The turnout was pretty good with the number won the section for of entries slightly up on flower arranging and last year. The judging was Moira Harding came done by Mike Ottaway top in the photography class. Our club from Hoveton and competition produced Wroxham Garden Society. 13 entries and the best Angela Jupp won the Judith Marley’s winning flower was the begonia flower section with a arrangement Trevor Frost’s basket of fruit and stunning hydrangea and entered by Karen vegetables Hilling. This was the second time that Karen has won the Trevor Frost’s basket was Angela Jupp’s winning magnolia judged best in the fruit and vegetable competition so members will be wanting to know the secret of her success!

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

We had a lovely meeting in September when Pat Barton entertained us with ‘Tints. Tones and Textures’.

Her containers were innovative and she created stunning arrangements with beautiful flowers.

Pat judged our competition entitles ‘Harvest Basket’ and gave constructive comments. Best in show was Judith Marley.

Our next meeting is on Monday 19 October when Cromer Flower Club once again invites visitors to come to a flower demonstration free of charge. This time Julie Woods will present ‘Tantalising Cocktail’. There will be a sales table, raffle and refreshments. A warm welcome awaits at 7.30pm at Cromer Junior School.

Musical Director Sought for Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society It’s all change at SCCS! Following several seasons under the masterly and enjoyable direction of Nathan Waring, ably supported by Lawrence Tao, the highly popular team have stood down to pursue their teaching careers at Greshams. Geoff Davidson steps in as Guest Conductor to prepare the choir for their November concert with the London Mozart Players supported by David Ballard who has joined the Society as Rehearsal Accompanist.

The search is now on for a replacement Musical Director… Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society (SCCS) is seeking to recruit a Musical Director to commence duties in November 2015. The choir meets and rehearses at Sheringham High School each Monday during term time from 19.30-2100 hours. The Musical Director would be required, in conjunction with the Trustees, to design and deliver annually three concerts in our locality with professional soloists and either orchestra or organ accompaniment, and also run a ‘Come and Sing’ in the Autumn. For all these activities, he/she will be assisted by the Rehearsal Accompanist and supported by the Committee of Trustees.

The SCCS is a community choir and has approximately 100 members. It was founded in 1933 and is a non-audition choir. The choir repertoire is varied but has consisted in the main of major choral works from the 17th to 21st century and in 2014 commissioned and performed Patrick Hawes Eventide (In Memoriam Edith Cavell) with English Chamber Orchestra in Norwich Cathedral. In November 2015, the choir will perform Richard Allain’s Vespers with the London Mozart Players at Cromer Parish Church. The choir is one of several that have been invited to join with Norwich Philharmonic to perform Mahler 8 in Norwich in May2016 to celebrate its 175th anniversary as part of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival. The Musical Director would be expected to rehearse the choir and liaise with the Norwich Phil chorus master. It would be expected that the appointee would play a full part in the running of the choir. SCCS is a registered charity administered by a Committee of Trustees. The constitution states that “…The Musical Director shall be invited to attend committee meetings in an advisory capacity but without the right to vote… (The Trustees) will consult with the Musical Director for advice and recommendations regarding works to be performed.”

Further information can be obtained from the Society web site www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk. Fees subject to negotiation, depending on ability and experience of successful applicant. As part of the selection process, applicants may be invited to attend and participate in a choir rehearsal.

Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society At Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society rehearsals are in full swing for their next production, The Birds, The Bees and Therapy, a comedy play written by Jack Williams. This hilarious, fast-paced comedy is devised on a split-stage, half in the flat of Steve Kingsellar and half in the local Community Centre where he works as a group therapist. After a rambunctious evening drowning his sorrows with the idea of forgetting about Emma, his married friend who he is in love with, he unfortunately meets Samantha! The play begins with Steve waking up with little memory of the night before, and he must get to work. His trouble-free life unravels at a rapid rate of knots, when the delusional Samantha reappears to declare her true feelings for him. Adding to the confusion his cantankerous flatulent father turns up, whilst Steve tries to fend off his flirty OAP neighbour. Throw in his group therapy patients who have various problems including anger, OCD, and an alcoholic, plus a lothario taxi driver. Everything comes to a head with his professional and personal life intertwining! Steve Kingseller is being played by Cromer born Martin Rodwell whose first outing with CSODS was in Oliver as the Artful Dodger in 1981. With a break of 15 years he returned to join the Society for Camelot, as Daddy Warbucks in Annie, Guys and Dolls, as well as several roles at Sheringham Little

ROUGHTON WI

Theatre. More recently Martin has taken on the challenge of directing, winning two NODA Eastern Region awards for best play, for How the Other Half Loves, and The Elephant Man. As soon as this very funny play is over then it is all stations go, to face Martin’s biggest challenge yet as he'll be directing Calamity Jane, CSODS 2016 musical. Martin says "being part of CSODS is like having an extended family, and a joyful experience to be part of a highly acclaimed group representing Cromer and Sheringham and bringing musical theatre, comedy, and drama to the stages at Sheringham Little Theatre and Cromer Pier Pavilion.

Auditions for ‘The Vicar of Dibley’

The hilarious stage show, The Vicar of Dibley, is coming to the Sheringham Little Theatre next February. This brilliantly funny production is already causing a lot of excitement among amateur actors and actresses in North Norfolk, as the auditions are open to anyone who thinks they have the acting skills to be one of the iconic characters in this show. The only prerequisite is that you are a member of CSODS when you actually audition. Membership is £25 per annum and you can become a member at the read through, which is on Thursday 22 October at Cromer Junior School at 7.30pm. Audition details

Our September meeting celebrated the Centenary of the WI and six of our members dressed in clothing from the 1900s and 1960s. Mal Franks, Jackie Hawes and Geraldine Tedeschi looked wonderful in their ‘turn of the century’ outfits finished, of course, with the all-important accessories of a hat and gloves. Barbara Baker, Edna Abbs and Barbara Mayes arrived in their own 1960s finery, and many memories were stirred up for all of us (the pale tights, short skirts, big sunglasses, etc). It was interesting to note that even in the 60s a hat and gloves more often than not completed the outfit, although no longer de rigeur. The rest of us, in our trousers, jeans, skirts and tops represented the ‘laid back noughties’!! We also welcomed Alex Hurrell, local reporter, who spoke about her 31 years in journalism, giving us an insight into the ‘news behind the news’. A nostalgic evening and a chance to celebrate both 100 glorious years of the WI, as well as Her Majesty the Queen becoming the longest reigning monarch in British history. Our October meeting Speaker will be Kindra Jones who will talk about

will also be given at the read through. Director Ruth Elliott said, ‘We are going to have so much fun -as well as a lot of hard work -with this production. The production team have already started work, and we are all really excited about putting on such a wonderful show.’ The award-winning Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society, will be raising money for Comic Relief by putting on this production. Tickets are already available from Sheringham Little Theatre on 01263 822347.

‘Life Beyond the Home Front: Women at War’. Visitors are most welcome. Please note, our Pamper Evening on 18 November will be held at Cromer Parish Hall (opposite Boots), with a number of beauty specialists giving ‘hands on taster sessions’ of massage, Reiki, hopi candles and more. Shantymen 25th Anniversary Gig – Cromer Pier Pavilion Friday 6 November

During 2015 the Shantymen have been celebrating their 25th anniversary, having started in 1990. This year, as well as the other forty odd gigs in their programme they also planned to do three very special gigs, two in Sheringham and the last one at the Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre on 6 November.

Musical Director Brian Farrow said This will be our final celebratory gig of 2015 and we are really looking forward to it. To make it really special we have asked Keith Skipper if he will join us for the show. We have always admired Keith’s work and he will bring his own unique taste of Norfolk to this show, which we have called ‘The Silver Darlings’.

They are still planning the show details but Secretary Dick Grieve added, “We propose to tell the story of the road we have travelled over the last twenty five years and include a few well-placed anecdotes from our resident comedians and I know Keith will add his own splendid blend of humour”

everyone to complete the form on our web site and send it to our secretary. He continued ‘This is your chance to be one of the Four Charity Beneficiaries from the Silver Darlings Concert on Friday 6 November at The Pavilion Theatre, Cromer Pier’.

They also plan to make another CD late this year or early next which will feature their favourite and most popular songs. Booking Secretary Chris Dolby said “The Shantymen are going to make a list of their twenty four favourite songs and will then choose the most popular ones for the CD. However we thought the public might wish to have an input into what’s on the new CD so we are inviting them to let us know their favourite songs which we have recorded.”

You will find a list of all of the songs they have recorded in the discography section of their web site www.shantymen.com and the Shantymen have said that if you have any favourites please let them know.

In summing up, Musical Director Brian Farrow said ‘This has been a wonderful year for us and this will be a very special show. But I would like to add some very specific thanks to all of the guys, some still with us, many who have left, but to all who travelled this road with us. We could not have done it without them.

The Shantymen are keen to demonstrate their thanks to the people of Norfolk who have supported them over the last twenty five years and have come up with a novel way to show that.

Chairman Bob Hawkins said ‘We have decided to give all of the profits from the Pier show to four local charities, one of which is the RNLI with whom the Shantymen have always been closely linked. The other three, which must be Registered Norfolk Charities, will be picked at random on the night of the concert from those who have expressed a written interest. So to be in with a chance, we are asking

Links Golf Club ‘40s Competition

The 1940s returned to the Links Golf Club with members dressing up for a special fun competition - our take on the ‘40s weekend's being held on the North Norfolk Railway at Sheringham and Holt.

There were some great 1940s Club Captain Tim McCrohon using a hickory putter styles on show, along with with other members who got into the spirit of the ‘40s. some fantastic golf.

The players were only allowed to use three clubs and a putter and the winner was Chris Kime with an impressive 39 Stableford points. Although Chris wasn’t wearing full 1940s clothing he got into the spirit of the times with a Dad’s Army t-shirt.

In second place was Kevin Bonnett looking the part in plus fours and a waistcoat and in third was Talbot Field with 34 points.

NORTH WALSHAM’S CHIPPY IN TOP FOUR

The THREE COTTAGES FISH RESTAURANT received the news earlier this summer that in this year’s competition to find the best 50 Fish and Chip Shops in the United Kingdom theywere one of only four shops to receive a mark of 100% from the independent judges. Having been judged a top 50 shop last year, owners, Paula, David and Sam, are really proud that the extra effort put in by all the staff to ensure every customer receives great food and great service has led to this fantastic award. The annual competition, which is run by Fry Magazine, entails an unannounced secret visit by an independent judge who marks each shop on the quality of their food and the service received. Over 50 different aspects of the food and customer service are marked to help, compare shops throughout the UK. At the Three Cottages the aim has always been to try and serve “the best fish and chips in the world”. A mark of 100% for the quality of the food for the third year running reflects their efforts to achieve this. The owners told us “We are incredibly proud to have been judged one of the equal top four fish and chip shops in the country. The staff deserve special mention for their achievement in also attaining a mark of Sam Homfray, Kirstie Anderson, 100% for the service given to customers.”

The green is open until the end of September so maybe that will be one of the last games to be played!

On 31 October, lifelong Norfolk resident Fred Corbett is embarking on a Malaysian expedition to raise money for the Ellen Mezzetti Memorial Fund and Classrooms in the Clouds.

Ellen was in her last year at Cromer High School when she died suddenly from an epileptic seizure. Since then her family and friends, led by her mum Lynn and dad John, have been raising money in her memory for Epilepsy Research UK.

Two years ago when Fred was trekking through the Himalayas, he was captivated by the quiet strength and warm hospitality of the Nepalese people. Classrooms in the Clouds is a small charity funding schooling in remote mountain areas, where some children walk for up to three hours to attend school. After the devastating earthquakes earlier this year, their work is even more vital. Fred, a local cabinetmaker will be flying to the island of Borneo where he will be trekking through the rainforest, camping in local villages and staying in small lodges. He will also be visiting animal sanctuaries, including the renowned Orangutan rehabilitation centre at Sepilok. The climax of the trek will be climbing Mount Kilabalu at over 4,000 metres, South-East Asia's highest peak, then white water rafting the Kiulu river.

FREE Spooky Fun at Bure Valley Railway!

Throughout the half term holiday, 24th October to 1st November 2015, the Bure Valley Railway will be holding its popular children’s event, “The Spooky Express”. Trains will operate throughout each day from both Aylsham and Wroxham Stations (see timetable). A children’s competition to see how many spooky items can be spotted on the train journey, a colouring corner and a decorated Whilstlestop Café add to this themed event. Also, the Railway’s resident Bear will be dressed up for the occasion to welcome each train at Aylsham Station. To make this a truly family friendly event, the Railway is giving free travel for every child when accompanied by a fare-paying adult (maximum of 2 children per adult, train only). No prior booking required. Susan Munday, Business Manager and organiser of this event, says, “Children of all ages can enjoy lots of spooky fun without it being too scary!”

In preparation for this challenge Fred, a hapkido black belt at Ellen's fathers Fighting Fit gym, has been regularly attending fitness classes and walking long distances on Norfolk foot paths, totalling over 150 miles so far. Fred is funding the entire trip himself, so all the money raised will be split equally between the two very worthwhile charities.

In order to donate, please visit www.mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/fredcorbett1 or pop in to FFMA gym at Louden Road, Cromer.
