BAKER’S DREAM IS ENDED BY NEW BOY ED

Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

Four times former club champion John Baker’s dream of winning Cromer Squash Club’s prestigious club championship for an unprecedented fifth time, ended last month when one of the club’s newest members, 18 year old student Ed Crookenden, from Salthouse, won what Technical Director Barry Starling described as ‘a magnificent final full of fast, furious and fantastic shot selection’ 9-0 9-5 9-6.

BAKER’S DREAM IS ENDED BY NEW BOY ED

Continued from front cover... Although the score line might suggest that the final was one sided, it was far from that as the players became involved in numerous long and demanding rallies before Baker, who first won the title as a promising 20 year old player 30 years ago, understandably tired, leaving the

victorious Crookenden triumphant and, at 18 years of age, the youngest ever club champion.

Although Baker lost the first game 9-0, he served no fewer than eight times but was not able to close a rally out as his young opponent retrieved every shot to take control, a control he never relinquished throughout the match. The second game continued in a similar vein as Crookenden led 4-0 and 8-2, before Baker’s experience and sheer determination enabled him to pull the score back to 5-8, only for the youngster to regain the serve and close the game out 9-6.

The third game was full of non-stop action as Crookenden opened up a 6-1 lead but Baker fought back brilliantly to keep himself in contention at 4-6 and 6-7. By now the enthusiastic capacity crowd was willing the former champion on as they wanted a fourth game but at 7-6 Crookenden seized his chance winning the next two points to take the game

Starling said afterwards “I must have watched at least 30 finals during my time at the club and, whilst it is difficult to make comparisons, this was up there with the best ever. In his short time at the club Ed has shown himself to be passionate about the sport and I genuinely believe he is one of the most accomplished players we have had at Cromer for a long time.”

Baker, as one has come to expect, was gracious in defeat, paying tribute to his opponent’s skill and athleticism, while the new champion thanked everybody who had made him welcome during his time at the club.

The two beaten semi-finalists were at opposite ends of the age scale. Twelve year old Alex Van Blerk, who defeated team captain Martin Sanville 3-2 in the quarter finals lost 5-9 3-9 3-9 to Baker whilst in the other half of the draw veteran Peter Arbuthnot went down 1-9 3-9 4-9 to Crookenden.

Apple Tarte Tatin

Apples are a big part of life here at the Grove. Every spring an (un)willing volunteer is led to the orchard and sent skywards armed with secateurs and definitely a safety harness to lop off the new growth, a precarious business but essen-

tial for the good maintenance of the trees. They sit and happily blossom and in the autumn produce the most amazing apples – eaters and cookers – as well as an assortment of plums and ears. We are very lucky to have them and they are very much the apple of the Senior Estate Manager’s eye. Of course they feature heavily on the menu every year and, occasionally, the kitchen will break into classic French and knock up a beautiful Tarte Tatin for us all to enjoy. Do come in and see us for the best apples in Cromer – and, of course, don’t forget to book your Christmas Party here too!

Ingredients • 4 apples • 50g of butter, soft • 50g of caster sugar • 375g of puff pastry Method 1. Cut the apples in half, peel, core and turn to an even, rounded size. 2. Place the butter in a tarte Tatin pan (or oven-proof frying pan) and press it out to cover the bottom. Sprinkle with the sugar and set aside. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4. 3. Place the pan on the stove, and melt the butter and sugar together until they start to brown. This should take approximately 10 min-

utes. 4. Roll the puff pastry out to fit the tarte Tatin pan and until it is around 3mm in thickness. Place 7 pieces of apple, cut side up, around the pan containing the butter and sugar mixture, placing 1 in the centre. Cover with the pastry disc and tuck the edges in. 5. Finish cooking the tarte in the oven for 50–60 minutes. Remove and leave to rest a little, then turn the Tatin out by placing a plate upside down over the entire pan and flipping the whole thing over.

Speakers Club President visits North Carolina Club

HANDYMAN Clint Brown Property Services

President of North Norfolk Speakers Club, Stuart Richards, recently visited Asheville Speakers Club in North Carolina.

Both clubs are part of Toastmasters International, which has 14,650 clubs worldwide and since 1925 has been helping people from all walks of life to gain confidence in speaking and

develop skills in communication and leadership.

‘I thoroughly enjoyed my visit’, said Stuart. ‘I was informed that dress code was very casual and it can be daunting visiting another club, especially wearing shorts! I was quickly put at ease by the warmth of the hospitality I received and as members of Toastmasters there was common ground and shared experience- like visiting an extended family. I had a lot of fun, learned more about improvised speaking and left with new ideas to bring back to my own club.’

Orchestras Live Comes to Cromer – London Mozart Players

The Orchestras Live North Norfolk concerts conclude in Cromer on Saturday 28 November at 7.30pm with the London Mozart Players supported by Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society. The finale features the exceptionally talented London Mozart Players, performing with Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society. An evening of 20th century classics is promised, including the beautiful County Premier of Vespers by Norfolk-based composer Richard Allain, showcasing north Norfolk’s most illustrious choral tones and John Adams's exciting piece of continuous music Shaker Loops, giving this concert a strong contemporary feel as well as celebrating great English and Norfolk compositions.

This is the sixth year North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has worked with Orchestras Live, a national music charity to bring orchestral music to people in areas across England. This final concert concludes the 2015 Orchestras Live North Norfolk concert series, which has featured world class chamber orchestras performing at rural venues in the district, supported by NNDC, Orchestras Live and Arts Council England in partnership with local promoters. Henry Little, Chief Executive of Orchestra Live, said “We are delighted that our sixth annual concert series in partnership with North Norfolk District Council will include a new version of Vespers by Richard Allain. “Orchestras Live is committed to producing

Local disaster movie for Northrepps!

The next film being put on by Northrepps Film Society is a true local disaster movie: Floods of East Anglia, 1912-53. Consisting mainly of archive news footage, this vividly recalls some of the sea’s most dramatic invasions of our coast and shows the chaos caused as homes and livelihoods are swept away. As it lasts little more than an hour it will be preceded by a second, shorter film of local interest to fill out the evening. The show is on Thursday 12 November (not the first Thursday of the month, as usual) when doors at Northrepps Village Hall open at 7pm with drinks for sale until the first film starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 payable at the door. We hope to see you there!

adventurous programmes that bring new and contemporary music alongside orchestral classics for audiences to hear and enjoy.” Cllr Becky Palmer, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said: “The Orchestras Live North Norfolk series has been hugely successfully and the London Mozart Players at Cromer Parish Church promises to be a fantastic finale! The series has offered a great opportunity for people to enjoy exceptional orchestral concerts here in north Norfolk and we look forward to supporting Orchestras Live again next year.” Tickets £15 (under 18s FREE) available from Sheringham Little Theatre Box Office: 01263 822347, boxoffice@sheringhamlittletheatre.com or www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY

Orchids have become one of the most popular houseplants in recent years because they are relatively cheap, will last for months, if not years, if properly looked after and are seen as an acceptable alternative to a bouquet of flowers when given for birthdays or anniversaries. This was not always the case as members of the society found out from Robin McDonald when she spoke at our October meeting. On one occasion 12000 guineas was paid for one plant as they were seen as a status symbol by those who could afford to buy them.

This has come about because growers have bred plants that do not need high temperatures or lots of sunlight and will not grow too tall. They have even targeted colours to fit the perceived preferences of certain countries. In Russia people go for yellow plants, it seems, while in Japan

Crayford & Abbs

The awards have recently been announced for Nissan Customer Quality Retailer, and local dealer Crayford & Abbs has come 2nd nationally, for delivering excellent customer service.

There are currently over 200 dealers and just three years since their inception, this is a tremendous accolade for all the Crayford & Abbs team, generated by their very loyal customers who ‘helped us win this award by completing their customer satisfaction questionnaire’s post sales purchase! In 2015 we will have sold over 300 new Nissan, whilst in the same period Nissan are enjoying a record year, helped by the award winning Nissan Qashqai and Juke, alongside the best-selling all electric Nissan Leaf, which from December 2015 has been fitted with a new 30kwh battery to extend its driving range to 155 miles, a 25% improvement over the 24kw unit. The car will go on sale in December 2015 with minor exterior changes and a new colour option’. Customer Quality Retailer of the Quarter – Sales

white orchids are preferred. Blue is the favourite colour in Poland.

In their natural surroundings, orchids grow all over the world. We associate them with hot countries but many of the 800 or so varieties that grow in the wild are found in northern areas, some high up in the Himalayas. They grow in three different ways. In meadows in Norfolk they will flower before dying down over the winter like all perennials. Some varieties cling to rocks and cliffs. A third type grow on trees and do not need soil to thrive only sunlight. They produce tendrils that draw water from the atmosphere and coupled with sunlight will produce sugars to help with the formation of flowers. If you buy a tree orchid from a garden centre, it should be in a clear pot and should not be placed inside a nicer looking pot as this will prevent the sunlight from getting to the roots. This reduces the chances of the plant surviving. Phalaenopsis is the most common variety on sale today. ‘Lavender Bluey’, ‘Magic Flair’ and ‘Mini Mark are popular varieties. Cymbidiums were popular in Victorian times, as they will grow in colder rooms. ‘Belle Park’ and ‘Parish Jewel’ are two to look out for. Miltoniopsis, or the pansy orchid, are highly perfumed. The most flamboyant type is Cattleya. It has big, showy flowers and the ones to look out for are ‘Gold Ringer’, ‘Sunray’ and ‘Firing Cat’.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 11 November at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. Julia Srigley will give a talk on garden design. This will be preceded by the Society’s AGM. Visitors are always welcome. Cost £2, free for members.

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

At our October meeting, which was free to visitors, Julie Woods gave us a demonstration entitled ‘Tantalising Cocktails’. Her flowers, which included orchids, strelitzia and roses with cocktail recipes to complement the designs, were sumptuous.

Julie judged the competition and June Skinner was best in show. Our next meeting will be on Monday 16 November at 7.30pm at Cromer Junior School when Anne Colby presents ‘All Good Things’. Visitors are always welcome.

About with Friends would like to say a special thank you to Wroxham Barns, who allowed a work placement to take place on the farm throughout the summer. This particular placement was a big success for a young man called Jai, who has ASD, learning difficulties and a special interest in animal care. His time on the farm allowed him to gain knowledge of how to care for the animals, as well as spending time interacting with staff and members of the public. The work placement and support gave Jai a big confidence boost, and he fulfilled something he initially said he wouldn’t be able to do, because of his difficulties in many social situations.

Eileen Calverley, Junior Farm Manager at Wroxham Barns backed up the success of the service and added “We support About with Friends because of the difference it can make to young people’s lives. Animals are a wonderful therapy

and provide joy and stimulation to a wide range of people.

Jai always had a lovely smile and infectious giggle when he was here and we are glad to have given him the opportunity”.

The idea for this strand of work was initially thought up by the Young Commissioners, these are a group of young people that have a very positive influence on their own community. The group are involved with all aspects of services provided for young people in their area. Several ideas were presented at a meeting in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style format, and the ‘Clubs with Friends’ project was awarded funding from the Youth Advisory Board (YAB). About with Friends would also like to take this opportunity to thank the YAB and The Benjamin Foundation for the opportunity to carry out the work this funding allowed us to do.

Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are delighted to announce that the gifted young conductor, Harry Ogg, who graduated from Clare College Cambridge in 2012, is to conduct their concert with London Mozart Players in Cromer Church on Saturday 28 November.

Harry won the Cambridge University Music Society's Conducting Competition in both his first and second years, going on to assist Sir Mark Elder, Sir Richard Armstrong and others as a result. Harry made his professional debut conducting the London School's Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican in September 2011 for which he was described as "a gifted musician and lucid conductor" and "someone to keep a very particular eye on". Recent projects include conducting Britten's "The Turn of the Screw" at Opera Holland Park, working as the Assistant Conductor and Head of Music at English Touring Opera (Spring Tour 2014) and conducting the Halle in "Britten to America" for NMC Recordings.

which was originally commissioned by Southend Festival Chorus in 2011 to reflect the coastal heritage of the area. Over the summer Mr Allain has re-worked and re-orchestrated this piece especially for this north Norfolk performance. The choir will be joined by a line-up of fine soloists including soprano Rosamund Walton, mezzo soprano Evie Anderson and tenor Oliver White. The concert will also include Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis and John Adams’ Shaker Loops which will brilliantly demonstrate the active part which London Mozart Players take in contemporary music.

Thanks to the generous support of Arts Council England, Orchestras Live, North Norfolk District Council and others, this concert presents a rare and wonderful opportunity

The concert on 28 November will feature Vespers by Norwich-based composer Richard Allain. Sub-titled Songs of the Sea this will be something of a coastal homecoming for this work

to see and hear one of the world’s leading chamber orchestras in north Norfolk.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

The work continues with the feral colony mentioned last time and several more of the adults have now been neutered with the help of the neighbour. However, we have now heard there are a further nine kittens to be taken into care, the first four as soon as they can be caught and the others as soon as they are old enough to leave the mother cat.

I believe most people are aware that everyone connected to the branch is a volunteer, willingly giving their time to help needy cats in our area. However, as they all also have families and some have jobs, their spare time is precious and it is very frustrating when on “cat business” this valuable time is wasted. They often change their arrangements so that someone can come to see the cats in care, as they are looking for a new companion. Having organised this, they sometimes find the person has changed their mind (or gone elsewhere) and their much valued free time has been lost. Occasionally, people will turn up earlier or later than agreed and this does cause problems, as the changes they have made to help the person concerned mean that, once again, they have to alter their own arrangements, which is not always convenient. Life would be so much easier for our volunteers (especially those that foster the cats) if people could remember this.

On a happier note, we are now finalising arrangements for our Christmas Sale on 21 November in St Benets Hall (please see What’s on Where). This year our “Crafty Ladies” have been very busy and produced lots of new items for sale. We are also including a new stall selling lots of delicious cakes, jams and pickles to tempt those who enjoy home produced goods. There are also plenty of lovely things for sale on our usual stalls, so we hope you will all come along and support the cats on the day. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Jack Lowe Joins Cromer RNLI Launch

Jack Lowe has loved the RNLI since he was a little boy. He became a member of Storm Force, the charity’s club for children, at the age of eight – about the same time he picked up his first camera. Now, he is bringing his two passions together in a unique undertaking — The Lifeboat Station Project.

Jack plans to visit all 237 RNLI lifeboat stations in Britain and Ireland, photographing the view from each station along with the crew and Coxswain/Senior Helm using Wet Plate Collodion, a Victorian process that allows him to record stunning images on glass.

The ambitious project is likely to take three to five years to complete. Jack, who lives in Newcastle upon Tyne, travels in 'Neena' — a decommissioned NHS ambulance purchased on eBay and converted into a mobile darkroom. He started the project on 17 January 2015 with a visit to Cromer and then returned in March to take some evocative prints of the crew and the coxswain John Davies.

watch a portrait of themselves developing. They are entranced, often rendered speechless and sometimes moved to tears!’

After attending the prelaunch briefing, Jack was kitted out in RNLI safety kit and boarded ‘Lester’, along with members of the volunteer crew. After approximately two hours, the boat was rehoused after undertaking several practise exercises with Jack taking a close interest. Jack said: “I was speechless as the crew allowed me to sit in the coxswains seat, a prime position to see the endless sea in front of me and my heart was racing as we launched down the slipway. It was such a humbling experience and made a dream come true. Cromer was the first to open its arms to the project and gave a kick start to it”

Jack then presented four prints to the station, which will be framed and take pride of place in the crew room, alongside other historic pictures of past crew. The prints were the first of each run, so have a special meaning for the station. Photos Copyright Chris Gill – Shore Crew RNLI Cromer

Jack has already documented all fifteen stations on the East Anglian coast. He says “The Project now enjoys an incredible extra dimension as everyone is so involved and engaged with it – the Coxswain and crew can step into the ambulance and

RNLI Cromer visited by a party from Nelson Journey

A party of adults and children spent several hours visiting the main boathouse at the end of the pier, handling artifacts at the Henry Blogg Museum and then had a typical seaside lunch which involved chips!

Many crew members volunteered to do a special launch of the all-weather lifeboat ’Lester’ after the group had a good look inside the Tamar class boat. They were able to see where the crew sit on a ‘shout’ as well as further below the decks. After practising trying on crew outfits, they then made a short journey to the Henry Blogg Museum to learn more about the historical aspects of Cromer’s long association with the RNLI.

All of this meant hungry appetites and Grant Zelos of Mary Janes, Cromer’s famous fish restaurant, donated sausages and chips for all the visitors. Everyone agreed that it had made a fitting finish to the day.

Finally at 2pm, our visitors left with goodie bags donated by Cromer RNLI and big smiles on their faces.

North Norfolk 618th out of 650 for Superfast Broadband

North Norfolk is ranked 618th out of the 650 Parliamentary Constituencies for Superfast Broadband according to new research. The area fares even worse for average download speeds; coming 621st out of 650.

Local MP, Norman Lamb says the figures show more needs to be done to reach rural areas with high speed broadband.

“Time and again, people in North Norfolk come to me with problems relating to

internet access. Investment in high speed broadband is as essential to modern life as investment in roads and telephones. We need decent broadband coverage in the area to help small businesses but also to give parents access to educational resources for their children and people who live in isolated areas access to friends and family,” says the MP.

“The coalition government and Norfolk County Council pledged funds to reach rural areas with fast broadband. I will keep pressing to ensure that North Norfolk is a priority for investment.”

At our October meeting, local public figure, Hilary Cox gave us a very entertaining talk, titled ‘My Interesting Life’.

Born in Pembroke, Hilary’s early years were spent living in different parts of the country. When her father left the army, he bought the Sea View Guest House in Mundesley. Expected to help in the guest house, Hilary and her sister learnt about the ethos of work from an early age. Something which Hilary confessed has stayed with her throughout her life. The guest house was extended and graduated to hotel status before the family sold the business to run a pub in Swanton Abbott. Following her father’s death, and with a husband and two young children to care for, at the age of 21 Hilary became ‘East Anglia’s Youngest Landlady’. Hilary’s recollections continued and although we would have liked her to prolong her talk, she was fast running out of time. Hilary was, however, able to quickly tell us how she met her third husband Willy Cox MBE and how they came to be married in St Pauls Cathedral. Such a relaxed and amusing speaker, we have asked Hilary to return at a later date to continue relating her life’s story.

Since our September meeting, members have enjoyed two walks in the area. The first a circular amble round Mundesley and the second a stroll round the lake at Blickling Hall followed by a visit to the craft fair in the Hobart Gallery.

Our November meeting will incorporate our AGM with a fish & chip supper and to round off 2015, members will be going out for Christmas lunch. We welcome visitors and prospective new members (you don’t have to be an Overstrand resident to join us) to our walks and monthly meetings. Our meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand.

ROUGHTON WI

Our speaker in October was Kindra Jones, who talked about women's roles in the Services and Land Army during WWII.

We learned that both the WI and the WVS were involved with the evacuation of more than 200,000 children in 1939/40. Kindra showed us slides of service women at work (including Princess Elizabeth) in more than 70 different trades (from driving to mapping, despatch riding to code breaking, clerking and cooking, to working on farms) in not always suitably designed or practical uniforms. Kindra was wearing the tan jodpurs, dark green sweater and wide brimmed hat of the Land Girls, and had also brought along a number of other uniforms for us to see -a fascinating evening. Our Annual Meeting takes place on 11 November, with elections to the Committee, followed by homemade soup and a glass of wine. We meet at Roughton Village Hall on the second Wednesday evening at 7.30pm of the month and visitors are always most welcome. We also have a Walking Group, an Indoor Bowls Group, a Craft Group and arrange outings to the theatre and the races. Take a look at our website : www.roughtonwi.org.uk On Wednesday 18 November we are holding a Pamper Evening and Christmas Fayre at Cromer Parish Hall opposite Boots 6.30pm. to 10pm. Tickets at the door or from Maureen Wells 01263 768106 are ÂŁ2.50 to include a glass of wine, a sausage roll and mince pie. There will be taster sessions of neck massage, Reiki, hopi candles, nails and more, as well as a raffle and stalls of craft, gift and produce (jams, chutneys, sweets etc). An opportunity to both start your Christmas shopping, and to, maybe, learn a technique to relax over the festive season!

Lasers for skin health

Lasers can also be used very successfully to treat Our treatments make your skin healthy and delay age related changes acne scarring, facial wrinkles and to achieve We live in an age of technological revolutions skin tightening. These procedures however may and breakthroughs. Medicine has also benefited require a small amount of recovery time. These from an explosion in technology. Lasers have can be performed purely under local anaesthesia completely changed the field of cosmetic

dermatology.

A couple of ground breaking studies from California have shown that light-based treatments do not only make the skin appear younger, they are actually making skin healthier and delaying skin ageing. Lasers work not only at a visible level but also at a microscopic, cellular and genetic level.

Researchers analysed characteristics of treated skin by taking skin biopsies and found that of the 2265 genes whose expression was altered in aged skin, 1,293 were fully restored to the expression seen in younger skin. After three successive Broadband Light treatments, the re-expressed genes included those associated with longevity and increased life.

A second blinded study showed that patients in the treated group on average had nine years younger looking skin.

For Vein care, we are now routinely able to treat conditions and achieving results which just 10 years ago would have been considered far fetched. In general there is a move away from major surgery and minimally invasive procedures and lasers are capable of achieving similar or better results with less risk of complications. So can we see anyone with a laser? We see major advances in technology which has resulted in better and better machines becoming available, at the same time there has been proliferation of less than desirable, and sometimes dangerous technology at the lower end of the market. Not all lasers are good and there are a lot of unqualified people using these so do your research before choosing a clinic and/ or a practitioner. In worst case scenario the outcomes can be less than desirable with complications sometimes difficult or impossible to rectify. So don’t take chances and visit a well

established and reputable clinic. Preferably a clinic registered with Care Quality Commission, the only regulator of health care in England.

What conditions can your lasers treat? Lasers can very successfully address a number of skin concerns either together or one at a time. This could be visible broken veins and capillaries, birth marks, acne, acne scarring, pigmentation, rosacea or facial blemishes. age spots of face, neck, chest and hands etc. Skin tags, moles and benign lumps and bumps can be vaporised in an instant, in a bloodless procedure and with minimal risk of scarring. Unwanted hair can be removed and tattoos can be faded or removed completely and leg veins can be sealed from inside in a nonsurgical way rather than having to undergo painful stripping operations. We also use lasers to tighten the tissues under the skin as can be achieved with laser liposuction and laser assisted face and neck lift surgery. Where can we find more information? Log on to www.coltishallclinic.co.uk for treatment prices and downloadable information sheets.

How can we book an appointment? Call us free on 0800 0430737 or fill our appointment request form on the website and we will contact you.

The Deregulation Act 2015 was passed in March this year covering various issues relating to residential landlords and tenants. From 1 October 2015, provisions will come into force protecting tenants from eviction which can have serious consequences for landlords.

A ‘Section 21’ notice is required to be served on a tenant where a landlord wishes to bring the tenancy to an end. A landlord’s ability to terminate a tenancy this way will be restricted where a tenant has complained about the condition of the property or its common parts and where the landlord either failed to respond within 14 days, has not provided an adequate response or has responded by serving a Section 21 notice.
