Alfie Barrell from Sheringham Cubs received his Silver Award

Jake Webster from West Runton received his Bronze Award

- Taking part in new sports and activities - Getting to know a little about the 30 million Scouts around the world

A Cub may also tell the Pack about a technology, new or old, and find out how energy can be saved and waste avoided through recycling. Cubs are also handy on the computer and can create posters and birthday cards. A Cub learns what to do in an accident – they know about keeping a person breathing, what is the recovery position and if you have cut yourself a Cub will help you. They will help new members understand what Cubs do, what is best and what is difficult for them.

Then came the Gold Chief Scout Awards presented to the ‘Super’ Scouts who had completed 8 of 9 challenge awards based on personal development. Paul explained that it has taken over 3 years for the Scouts to achieve the Gold Award and that their challenge is much greater. The youngsters found that development is fun when it involves lots of outdoor activities, and the ability to lead and be a team member are 2 of the most important skills. They had also played musical instruments, tried acting, singing, and joined a community help project. Menu planning, Cooking, First Aid, Tent Pitching are basic essential skills which Scouts learn so that they can do great fun activities such as rowing, kayaking, sailing, surfing, or maybe rifle shooting, clay pigeon shooting, archery, gliding, parascending, hill walking, climbing, abseiling, skiing, caving and pot holing, to name just a few.

CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS - REVIEW JINAH SHIM - Piano

This is the 22nd season of Cromer Music Evenings presentations in engaging artists of a very high calibre and the most recent was no exception in the exhilarating performance of an artist of considerable virtuosic talent.

Beethoven’s Sonata No 15 in D major Op 28 - Pastoral in four movements, written in 1801. Here the first two movements, although marked allegro and andante, hardly differed in the tempo, hence pastoral style, the scherzo and rondo in contrast were performed in a scintillating and masterful interpretation. Liszt Ballade No 2 in B minor portrayed intermittent scenes of tranquility and

Schumann’s Kriesleriana, Op 16 in eight fragments of diverse textures, requiring an innate musicality and technical pianistic skills, which this young artist had in abundance.

Debussy’s L’isle Joyeuse written in 1904, portraying in music a fictitious island being visited by happy young people - a wonderful picture in one’s imagination, with Debussy’s use of the whole tone scales, creating delicious harmonic effects an overall superb concert by Jinah Shim whose next engagement was at the Wigmore Hall, London. Tuliptree Designs

How does a long distance lorry driver, who travelled up and down the country delivering anything from washing machines to fruit, end up working in fabric.

Steve was driving along the road one day when a sign appeared ‘Low Bridge Ahead.’ Before he knew it, the bridge was right ahead of him and he got wedged under the bridge. Cars backed up and the police finally arrived to see that the lorry was not going anywhere, forwards or backwards, and needed some serious equipment to cut it out from under the bridge.

Samaritans Purse Shoebox Appeal

Once again Christmas is approaching fast and it is a time when small groups of volunteers gather together to think of others.

In an outbuilding in Aylsham, we are gathering shoe boxes full of sweets, toys and basic essentials to be sent to poor and vulnerable children in Eastern Europe, Africa and for the last two years, Syrian refugee children.

Operation Christmas Child has been supplying gifts since 1970 to bring a smile to children at Christmas.

If you would like to fill a shoebox and would like to know more, please look at www.samaritans-purse.org.uk/ what-we-do/operation-christmas-child These can be done as individuals, families or as a group.

Thank you for bringing a smile to a child’s face at Christmas. Contact details are Jo Masters on 01263 513458.

Inquisitive people got out of their cars to see what has happened and why they are not going anywhere and one very irate driver walked up to Steve, put his hands on his hips and said ‘got stuck, huh?’ Steve, who has a great sense of humour replied “no, I was delivering this bridge and ran out of gas!”

He got the sack, and decided that there has to be more to life than living in a lorry.

So where does the fabric come in? Well, his sister and friend were in the early stages of starting Tuliptree Designs and asked him to help with the ‘heavy work’. He did a great job, made an OK cuppa and picked up all things ‘fabric’ very quickly, so was asked to stay. He is a big hit with the quilting ladies, who love it that he takes an interest in what they are doing and he even suggests colours and fabrics that they may not have.

Why not pop in and have a chat to Steve at Tuliptree Designs, Groveland Farm Shop, Thorpe Market Road, Roughton, NR118TB 01263 834353

Cromer Academy food project wins award

Cromer Academy's Food to Fork project has been recognised with a Bernard Matthews Youth Award.

The initiative picked up the top honour in the food and farming category at the 2015 awards last month.

Farm to Fork highlights the importance of sustainable farming and fishing practices, and has seen pupils work with local food suppliers and producers. Projects have included being involved in the Cromer and Sheringham Crab and Lobster Festival, holding a dinner in aid of the Cromer branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institute, and planning to develop an allotment area that will see pupils grow their own food for use in classes.

The award was picked up by Andrew Sherwood from Bernard pupil Saffron Magnus and Matthews with Saffron Magnus and principal Dr Geoff Baker at a Dr Geoff Baker ceremony at Norwich's Open venue on 27 October, hosted by BBC Look East presenter David Whiteley and CBBC star Dani Harmer.

The awards cover eight categories and winners receive ÂŁ1000 to further boost their activities.

Bernard Matthews HR director Andrew Sherwood said "The Bernard Mathews Youth Awards are in their seventh year and still we continue to be astounded by the positive impact young people are having on the community. Last night we celebrated and drew attention to the talents and accomplishments of young people throughout Norfolk and Suffolk. As always we have been both inspired and humbled and it is an honour to meet and celebrate with the finalists and winners of this year's awards."

North Norfolk Shows it Has Got Talent Talent Competition GRAND FINAL brought Cromer Pier Alive On Thursday night 30 October, Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre was brought alive by the 10 finalists in North Norfolk's biggest talent competition.

The theatre was packed with supporters of the performers, many of whom had been following the competition since the first heat at the end of the summer. Based on the well-known show format, the audience knew what to expect and they weren't disappointed – it was a truly memorable event.

All the acts in the Grand Final had already been through the heats held across North Norfolk during the late summer, and the semi-finals held at Davenport's Magic Kingdom in October, so the high quality of all the performers was already known.

In the first half of the final all 10 acts were given three minutes to impress the judges, with compere Joe Ballard, from Arts North Norfolk, encouraging the judges to offer insightful comments to help the acts prepare for their performance in the second half. This advice was taken on board and all the acts 'upped their game' after the interval making the final selection of a winner harder for the judges. Judges At the end of the show there could only be one winner.

The duo Angelo Bernal and Ryan Major performing as GELO were given the M&A Partners trophy. Their performances ‘Bring Him Home’ from the musical Les Misérables and ‘Let it Go’ from the movie Frozen, really impressed the judges.

They have been given an immediate opportunity by David Mackay, one of the judges, to perform in the show ‘The Elvis Years’ on 31 October showing the power of the talent competition.

Second prize went to Jack Goodacre who was accompanied on the night by Perry McCabe

and Tim Goodacre. Jack was the youngest performer on the night and quickly grabbed the hearts of much of the audience with his performances. Third prize was given to Olivia Watson, supported on the acoustic guitar by Rob Bindley. The judges commended Olivia for her performance of ‘On My Own’ from Les Misérables.

North Norfolk's Great Talent, #NNGT, was organised by the Coast Arts Festival in conjunction with the Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre, Arts North Norfolk and Art is Medicine. The #NNGT Trophy was created by Annie Lloyd – Art is Medicine - sponsored by M&A Partners in Cromer. The four judges were David Mackay, Anna Mudeka, Roy Davenport and Annie Lloyd.

The 10 acts in the #NNGT Grand Final were Winner: Gelo – Male Vocalist Duo (Angelo Bernal and Ryan Major), 2nd Jack Goodacre – Guitar and Vocals with Tom and Perry supporting, 3rd Olivia Watson – Vocalist Accompanied by guitarist Rob Bindley, Dylan Wilson – Stand up Comedian, Lost Talent – dancers from Marlene’s School of Dance, Elena Ioannou – Vocals with

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We have had nine kittens in from the feral colony mentioned before but have now been advised there are a further two to be caught. Catching the adults is ongoing but has not been helped by the fact that when previous ones were caught they did not have their ears tipped, which is the normal procedure, but instead had some fur taken from their tails, which has grown back again. Consequently, several have been trapped again and have had to undergo an unnecessary operation. The tail clipping was done by a different vet and is not the accepted practice for dealing with feral cats, for obvious reasons. One of the joys of being a volunteer is being involved in caring for the cats and kittens while they are with us. Seeing frightened cats gaining confidence and learning to trust their carers gives us great pleasure and although we do get attached to them all, it is nice to know that they will be living in a house and getting the attention they deserve. A new home, where they can share a lap, a chair or even watch the television and enjoy the company of their new family. One of the biggest benefits is helping to care for the kittens. While some are born in care or arrive when a few days old, others can be several weeks old when they join us. Seeing the very young ones open their eyes and

The Need for

then starting to explore the world outside their bed, never ceases to bring a smile to our faces. Once they become more mobile, watching them finding and using a litter tray (with no help from us). You honestly do not need to train a kitten to use a litter tray as they do this instinctively, which Cassandra, Electra and Achilles, makes you realise three of the many kittens in care how wonderful nature is. Then, as they get older, seeing them playing and learning how to hunt. To watch a small kitten growling at its litter mates to make sure they do not come too close as they have caught a cat mint sack and do not want to share, always causes amusement. They are not kittens for long, so it is a privilege we enjoy on a regular basis and one of the perks of having to clean the pens on a cold, wet and windy day.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

Microchipping

Each week we see cats and dogs that are lost or have escaped from home. Some, sadly, have been involved in road traffic accidents. Thanks to the majority of our clients having already microchipped their pets, they usually get reunited. Imagine though, if your pet went missing and it didn’t have a microchip…… the outcome could be very different.

Microchipping is a permanent form of identification for your pet, not only will it prevent your pet from becoming lost and ending up in rehoming centres because the owners cannot be traced, it will also help to prevent theft of animals. • • • • • •

Microchips are easily placed via a needle into the scruff of the neck No need for anaesthetic or sedation Painless – no aftercare required Permanent – one microchip should last the lifetime of your pet Microchips are about the size of grain of rice Cats can be chipped too, but it is not a legal requirement.

From 6th April 2016 it will become law that all dogs have a microchip by 8 weeks of age and are registered on an approved database. Non-compliance may result in a fine of up to £500. You will also be required to keep your contact details up to date on the database. Non-compliance may again result in a fine of up to £500. It will still be a legal requirement for your dog to wear a collar and tag when out in a public place.

The tag must state the name and address of the owner, ideally with a contact number.

Continued success for leading North Norfolk Solicitors

Following the recent expansion of their North Norfolk office, leading solicitors Clapham & Collinge held a ‘House Warming’ welcome evening on Thursday 15 October, offering the opportunity for people who’ve not used Clapham and Collinge to meet the team, as well as inviting existing clients to see the new premises. Louis Hilldrup-Boorman, Marketing Manager at Clapham & Collinge said “The move to a new office in Sheringham has been an opportunity to continue and enhance our relationship and engagement with the local community. With over 60 guests in attendance, a combination of local businesses, private and corporate clients, the evening was a huge success!”

Going from strength to strength, the firm has also broadened their Norfolk presence with the opening of a third branch in Brooke (incorporating Ashmoles Solicitors). The opening of the Brooke office coincides with Clapham & Collinge’s 60th Anniversary and expansion of their North Norfolk office. With offices in Sheringham, Norwich and Brooke, the firm is continually expanding their workforce and currently employs 60 people. Lin Whitehead, Partner and Head of Private Client Department at Clapham and Collinge was delighted to announce the opening of the new office and stated “A key part of our strategy for this important year has been to broaden our South Norfolk presence to demonstrate our continued and growing commitment to the county. The opening of our South Norfolk office in Brooke

For business clients the firm offers services including business debt, litigation and disputes, employment law and commercial property. Bespoke legal advice packages are also available, designed to support businesses with their legal needs. The firm is also listed in the Legal 500 UK, the leading guide to law firms in the UK.

As part of its community involvement, Clapham & Collinge is actively involved in a range of local charities and community initiatives, supporting charities such as Norfolk Wildlife Trust, Break and The Benjamin Foundation, whilst developing and promoting its own events such as regular free advice mornings, dementia awareness events and training sessions.

Clapham & Collinge offer legal services including property, divorce, wills and probate. The volume also includes various posters, programmes and other memorabilia closely connected with invitations to hold forth at all manner of occasions since finding his feet at cricket dinners in the 1960s. “In some respects, this is my way of finding a permanent home for old friends I simply can’t live without.”

The book, another collaboration with Peter Stibbons of Poppyland Publishing based in Cromer (www.poppyland.co.uk) and costs £9.95 in local bookshops.
