Sheringham & Beeston Regis Sea Scout Group Sheringham and Beeston Regis Sea Scout Group held their Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 11 November at their Scout HQ, de Morley Garth.
The Group Scout Leader, John Paine, welcomed The District Commisioner, Paul Henriksen, District Chairman, Fred Crane, District Treasurer, Roger Hill and parents and friends. After the formal election of Officers The District Commisioner presented The Chief Scout's Silver Award to Cubs Albie Barrell, Cameron Cook and Joshua Pratt as well as badges to the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Leader Susan Wallace was presented with her 15 year service award. The Scout section supported the North Norfolk District Railway's 40s weekend by selling the newspapers as part of their community challenge.
At the end of the meeting our two Young Leaders, Andrew Mitchell and Alexander Ghanbouri (both 17 years old), gave a very enjoyable and informative illustrated talk about their experiencesat the Japanese World Jamboree they attended this Summer. Both boys had been in the Sheringham Group since Beavers and had been chosen by the County to be part of the group of 18 to represent the
whole of Norfolk. The total number of people at the Jamboree was 34,000 from all over the world. Andrew and Alex also visited Hiroshima, Tokyo, Kyoto and ShinYamaguchi as well as taking part in all the very varied and exciting things to do on site. They were especially impressed with the Bullet trains they travelled on which were very fast and always on time! The weather was extremely hot and humid which was quite hard to deal with. To fund this trip both Andrew and Alex had to raise £3000 each, which also helped for a third world boy to attend. They have been an inspiration to the younger members of the Group to aspire to take part in a Jamboree, especially a World one! Scouting is always in need of help with running the different sections - Beaver Cubs 6-7 year olds, Cub scouts 8-10 year olds and Scouts 10-14 year olds. If you would like to help in any way at all the Group would be pleased to meet you. Please ring
01263 823240 if you would be prepared to help in any way either by fundraising or at meetings.
Cromer WI
November was our Annual Meeting and normal meeting so we did not have a speaker this month. The committee stayed the same, apart from Irene Nutt who, after many years on the committee, felt it was time to put her feet up. Glenice Knight stays as President, with Judy Roberts as Secretary and Sylvie Kilshaw as Treasurer. Glenice thanked the Committee for all their hard work during the last year.
The yearly prizes for the competition were given out to Yvonne Mileham first place with Hazel Patrickson second and Liz Holehouse third. The draw for a bursary to go to Denman College in 2016 was won by Jill Betz and Sue Stoneman.
At our normal meeting we discussed various outings for next year including dog racing, Holkham Hall and Stody Gardens. The competition was won by Yvonne Mileham and Hazel Patrickson. Freddie Abbs was presented with an indoor plant as, in her words she has now started her 96th year. Freddie joined Cromer WI in 1950 and has been a treasured member ever since.
Next month on 10 December it is our Christmas meeting and nibbles will be available. We will be having musical entertainment from Pam Warren & Friends.

Merlot-poached Pears Christmas is nearly here and we have been extremely busy with all the usual festive accoutrements that accompany this time of year.
As always we will be holding our annual Carol Concert on 23rd December at 6pm; it’s a great way to kick off your holiday and get into the spirit of things with some lusty singing and the best sausage rolls and mince pies this side of Bethlehem.
Our annual event – held to raise money for Cromer RNLI – is always hosted by our good friend Darren Thornton - now Reverend Thornton, Dean of Norwich, but once Darren from the Chocolate Box who used to moonlight at the Grove waiting tables in the summer. He once dashed back in the middle of the night in a panic thinking that he’d left the hot water boiler on, and was discovered at 3am wedged halfway through the pantry window attempting to check the switch. But he has moved on to bigger and better things and it is always lovely to see him in his old stomping ground once more.
with vanilla and cinnamon
Please enjoy our seasonal poached pears and we’ll hopefully see you for dinner before Christmas.
750ml bottle of Merlot 200g golden caster sugar 2 cinnamon sticks snapped in half 1 vanilla pod halved lengthways and halved again 4 firm pears (peeled) Pour the wine, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla into a deep medium-sized pan and heat gently until the sugar melts. Add the pears and make sure they are completely submerged in the wine.
Simmer for 30-45 minutes until the pears are just tender, then turn off the heat and allow to cool in the syrup. Remove the pears and reduce the liquid by 2/3rds.
Leave the liquid to cool.
Pour over the pears to serve (with ice-cream!)

Seasonal Spectacular Success at St Margaret’s
The Seasonal Spectacular, organised by Rosalie Osborn Gibb, was the 7th and last in the 2015 series of art, craft and photography exhibitions. Although only open for 2 days, it raised £540 for church funds and welcomed many visitors.
Hunt crew (see photo) on Sunday morning was an added surprise. Their difficulty seemed to be not so much locating the clue, rather finding the church.

THE STRAND CLUB
We were delighted to welcome no less than four new members - Brenda Hawksworth, Audrey Brittlebank, Ann Baker and Peggy Garrod. The Club hopes that they will enjoy the activities and speakers which the committee arranges.
The January lunch was discussed and a menu circulated. Members made their choices and paid their £10. This will cover a main course, dessert and coffee at the Royal Hotel in Mundesley. We only have to choose the main course ahead of time and then we can decide on our dessert from the selection available on the day. This is considered good value and we are all looking forward to it. Those members who weren't able to join us on 11 November and would like to come to the lunch, please contact Josie on 579748 to obtain the details. Guests will be charged £12 as we are able to make a small subsidy for members. Arrangements for car sharing will be made at our December meeting.
Our own calendars (£3.50) and Christmas cards (£1 for a pack of 6) were available to buy and many members took advantage of this. More can be obtained from Glo on 01263 576539.
We were then pleased to announce our speaker for the day - our own Chairlady Jackie Hudson, ably assisted by her little dog Beau, who also features on the Christmas cards.
Beau and Jackie have become volunteer
visitors under the Pets as Therapy scheme. They had to undergo several tests which took place at the Pets At Home shop where there were plenty of other dogs, noise and people. Beau passed with flying colours as a more laid back little dog would be hard to find. The assessor apparently gently pulls the dogs' ears and tails, drops something noisy close by and generally tests the dogs for calmness under pressure. The tests last almost an hour.
Pets As Therapy was founded by Lesley Scott Ordish in 1976, then called Pro Dogs and consisting at first of just her own dogs. The pilot scheme began in Derbyshire and after some resistance to the idea finally took off and became the nationwide organisation we know today, changing its name to PAT in 1983.
Psychologists find that gentle, unquestioning animals provide motivation, relaxation and a building of confidence amongst all kinds of patients. They break boundaries which have built up over weeks and months and encourage communication. Patients in a secure facility were discovered to no longer need sleeping pills if a PAT dog visited in the evening.
There is a Read2Dogs scheme (an offshoot of PAT) which Jackie and Beau are hoping to join. Beau adores children and this idea is that pupils with reading difficulties will be asked to read to the visiting dog instead of an adult. It has been found to work beautifully as the child no longer feels under pressure and the dog's undemanding, interested little face promotes a
desire to try. Jackie and Beau have visited the UEA at exam time and found that stroking and talking to Beau de-stresses the students and enables them to cope with sitting the exams in a much more relaxed frame of mind.
Jackie's talk was very interesting. We learnt a lot and were delighted by the beautiful Beau sitting happily on his bed throughout. Jackie gave him permission to say hello once the talk was ended and he wandered round the room contentedly accepting pats and compliments.
Our next meeting will be on 9 December and will be our pre-Christmas tea with entertainment. This year we have a men's choir visiting who will sing a section of songs including festive ones and some from around the world - all unaccompanied by music. It is a beautiful sound as Glo and Chris can confirm, having been to a practice in Aylsham. The Christmas tea will be provided by members and committee and Josie has a list of all our names which she would like to be completed with offers of finger food. Please contact her should you intend to come.
The entrance fee for this is the same as always - £1 for members and £2 for visitors. This covers the food and entertainment and raffle tickets will be available separately on the day. The starting time is 2.30 as usual.
Your committee hope to see you there. It should be a great afternoon. For more information, please contact one of the programme co-ordinators; Glo on 576539 or Chris on 579433.

Gentle Laser Skin Rejuvenation
- also known as Polaris laser, Laser Skin Tightening or Laser Genesis - the perfect lunch-time procedure
What does it do? It is an innovated, technologically advanced way to promote vibrant and healthy looking skin in men and women. The non-invasive laser procedure safely, discretely and effectively treats fine lines, wrinkles, large pores, uneven skin texture and diffuse redness. You can expect to see subtle results after just one treatment without unwanted side effects.
What does the treatment feel like? Patients describe the treatment as relaxing and therapeutic. You will experience a gentle warming of your skin’s surface as the laser headpiece is moved back and forth above you skin. Laser procedure is very comfortable; it’s sometimes called the warm laser facial. It is a gentle, relaxing and virtually painless procedure with zero downtime.
How does it work? The effect that Laser treatment has on your skin is a gradual one. Most of our patients begin to see an improvement in their skin after about 3 or 4 treatments. We use a medical grade laser to gently heat the skin below the surface. This “healthy heat” stimulates the body’s own natural healing response which stimulates new skin cell growth and collagen production. The texture of your skin literally becomes smoother. Depending on what you are having treated, pores get smaller, lines are decreased as your underlying collagen is refreshed, and color of your skin will even out while redness is diffused.
be quite dramatic.
Can anyone have it done? Yes. Adults of all ages and all skin types can benefit from Laser treatment and can have it done year round.
How does it differ from other laser treatments you offer? If you have obvious issues or medical conditions such as rosacea, acne, acne scarring or pigmentation issues then you need a customised treatment plan which may include any one or more of our sixteen lasers. We first suggest a consultation with our doctor for such problems.
Contact us on 0800 0430737 or www.coltishallclinic.co.uk
What is diffuse redness? Diffuse redness is the appearance of facial redness, such as rosy cheeks. This condition is caused by dilated capillaries. The most common areas are the nose, forehead and cheeks. Diffuse redness is often associated with a condition called rosacea. Laser treatment will help your appearance by gently generating heat in the dilated capillaries resulting in reduced redness.
How many treatments will you need? People and conditions will vary in the way they respond, based on their skin biology. Typically we recommend a series of 4 to 6 treatments to optimize the results.
How long does the treatment take? Each treatment session takes about 30 minutes.
What are the side effects? Most patients report few if any side effects and return to their normal activities immediately following the treatment. You may be flushed from the heat but that will disappear within a few hours of the treatment. The most common side effect of Laser treatment is beautiful skin!
What can you expect? Laser treatment can help restore the skin’s youthful glow and appearance by smoothing out uneven textures caused by aging, sun damage or scars. You will see a creamier, healthy complexion as large pores reduce in size, and minor imperfections are diminished. The individual treatment results are subtle, but the overall effect of multiple treatments can

New European Succession Laws; or, why those with EU assets should review their English Wills Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr
It is often said that the reason that France and other continental countries have so many small farmers is due to their ‘forced heirship’ laws, introduced by Napoleon. We typically think of adjoining, tiny fields farmed by cousins, with all the family feuds that accompany such geographical and familial proximity.
Napoleon codified French and other European laws and created rigid legal structures which endure this day. Amongst these are the European ‘forced heirship’ rules whereby certain fixed portions of a deceased person’s estate must go to designated heirs. Contrast this with the English right of testamentary freedom and you will see one of many legal examples of ‘vive la difference’.
Those owning assets in other EU countries are well advised to take specialist advice on whether to alter their existing English Wills in the light of these new rules. In doing so, they can both seek to avoid potential conflicts and to ensure that what they own goes to whom they wish.
“This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy.

If you require advice on any other legal matter please telephone our North Walsham office on 01692 503081 or email law@hayes-storr.com.
But is all that set to change?
New EU cross-border inheritance laws are now in place, allowing individuals to opt out of the forced heirship rules that apply in a number of EU countries. Individuals may opt either for the law of the country of their nationality or last habitual residence to apply to any assets across Europe.
The default rules will remain that the law of the country where someone is a habitual resident when they die is the law that governs succession to their estate as a whole. The new rules are intended to ease crossborder succession.
Even though the UK (and Ireland and Denmark) opted out of the new rules, there are implications for Brits with assets in other EU countries. If someone has an English Will, they will automatically have chosen English law. As well as removing EU forced heirship rules governing the succession of EU assets owned by a British national (a good thing), the changes mean, for instance, that the right for disappointed persons to claim against their overseas assets [under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975] might well now arise (a bad thing).

Cromer Pier toilets in line for national award - Shortlisted for Loo of the Year
North Norfolk District Council’s refurbished toilets on Cromer’s iconic pier are in the mix for a national award.
The North Norfolk District Council entry to the 2015 Loo of the Year Awards has been shortlisted, with winners due to be announced in early December.
Winners of national awards (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) then have the chance to compete for the UK Award, which is announced on the night.
National and UK awards will be announced and
presented at an event on Friday 4 December at the St Johns Hotel in Solihull.
The Cromer Pier toilets were refurbished following severe damage incurred during the destructive storm of December 2013. The toilets feature energy saving lighting and dementia friendly signage.
Cabinet Member for Assets Cllr John Rest said “The shortlisting is clear recognition of the quality of work carried out on the Cromer Pier facilities. Excellent public toilet facilities contribute to a good first impression among our
Long ago, before radiators ruled and boilers burned,
And frost grew icy blue on the inside of windows,
My father rose at five for the early shift, whilst we
Slept, snug and warm under sheets and blankets.
He would dress breathing breath like smoke and with
Sleep still on his mind, light the fire in the cold grate.
He would quietly make his breakfast and drink his tea.
The fire would roar and heat the house and he would slip
Quietly off to work, wrapped and packed against the cold.
An hour later we would wake to a warm house and eat
Breakfast in the warmth of my father’s love.

thousands of visitors.
“Following the storm in late 2013 there was a great deal of repair and refurbishment work carried out along several sections of the council’s coastline and this was part of that successful project.
“We have had previous success at these same awards for toilets at Happisburgh and Sheringham, and we hope to repeat that success.”
The Cromer toilets were refurbished by Thrower & Rutland and designed by SMG Architects of Sheringham – the same team was responsible for the Happisburgh and Sheringham projects.
Council to provide free parking on the weekend before Christmas No charges on 19 & 20 December
Parking in North Norfolk District Council’s car parks will be free over the weekend before Christmas (19 and 20 December).
The Council has decided to, once again, waive the parking charges prior to Christmas, as in previous years. The decision supports North Norfolk's businesses and traders by encouraging people to buy their Christmas gifts and supplies in their local towns. At a crucial time of year for the retail community, it is also a gesture of goodwill for the festive season in response to requests from businesses.
Cabinet Member for Assets Cllr John Rest said "At such an important time of the year for retailers, it is vital that the Council supports local businesses. There are scores of excellent shops across the district offering a wide range of goods and services. By providing this weekend of free car parking, we hope to encourage people to use that wealth of provision."
On December 19 and 20, shoppers will be able to stay throughout the day without a ticket in any North Norfolk District Council run car park, saving them up to £1.20 an hour.

Christmas Special at the Pier The 11th season of The Cromer Christmas Show has now started and runs until the 30th December. There are some familiar faces (Olly Day and Lulu Alexandra) and some new (Steve Zebs and Keith Pemberton) as well as the Christmas Show dancers (Sian, Gina, Millie-Rose, Francesca, Jacob and Anthony) and, of course, the fantastic Marlene’s School of Dancing and Cromer Youth Choir. Olly Day , Norfolk's very own funny man, keeps the show moving and on track with some very funny links and asides along with a show stopping piece, with Steve Zebs, Elf Yourself a Merry
Christmas. Steve Zebs kept the audience intrigued with his comedy and head scratching magic. Lulu Alexandra (female vocalist) and Keith Pemberton (male vocalist) were great and sang a variety of song styles very well and kept the audience mesmerised as well as performing in the 'whole cast' numbers. The Seaside Special Dancers were, as usual, excellent and went from a beautiful ballet piece to an exuberant festive Bollywood routine, FANTASTIC. The children of Marlene’s were really excellent and I think earned the loudest round of applause for their dancing and choir singing . Di Cooke (show devisor, director and choreographer)

should be congratulated for a very slick show, with Nigel Hogg, who as musical director, excelled. Costumes by Laura Whyte, lighting by Amanda Hill and scenic designer Ian Westbrook were spot on. Openwide Coastal Ltd, the producers of the show and all the staff and volunteers of Pavillion Theatre should be congratulated for putting on the only end of pier show in Europe (one good reason for being Pier of the Year in 2015) and maintaining such high standards . proportion of our reserves. With the new deal, together with the fantastic support that we get every year from local residents, visitors and the town's businesses, we will be on track for continuing our work next year and into the future.
The volunteers said that it is fantastic that a major company like McCarthy & Stone have chosen them to sponsor. Support like this for the town, from companies who are investing in the area is vital, and has come at exactly the right time for us.
Cheryl Bissett, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy and Stone, comments: “As a company, our aspiration is not only to build quality homes but also to create positive relationships in the communities in which we build. We’re delighted to have been able to contribute towards such a worthy cause and cannot wait to see the lights in all their glory!”
Justice Court is a development of 35 one and two bedroom Retirement Living apartments, offering luxury homes for the over 60s. The award winning developer has recently opened a temporary Marketing Suite, on the corner of Mount Street in Cromer, where people can visit to find out more. Fittingly, the lights team will be attaching some of their displays to this building.
The switch on event, which is organised separately, will be on Saturday 5th December.
The team of volunteers, who have been providing Cromer with Christmas lights for the last 38 years, are looking for new recruits, if you have any skills relating to electrical installations or are happy to climb ladders, they would love to hear from you. Email secretary@cromerchristmaslights.org.uk

Retired? New to the area?
You do not need to be a recent arrival for this to be of interest, but you do have to be retired or near to it. Cromer & Sheringham Probus Club is a great environment for retired men to make and meet friends over a good lunch. We also have a guest speaker at most meetings, with talks on a wide range of topics, often with a local flavour. All in all, the club is an excellent way of getting to know what goes on in the area. The speakers are part of it, but our members are also involved in a wide range of other local clubs and activities, so connections can be established. An added bonus is that you do not have to do anything other than come along to enjoy the meetings and, if you cannot attend every month, it does not matter. The regular meetings take place on the first Tuesday of the month at The Links Country Park Hotel in West Runton. Gentlemen are very welcome to get in touch and book to attend a regular meeting as a visitor, however we are holding a coffee morning, open to all, when booking is not required. It will take place on Tuesday, 12 January from 10.30am at the Hole-in-One Sports Bar, at The Links Hotel. The coffee morning has been arranged for the purpose of welcoming new people to come along to get to know us and what the club provides. Other halves of both members and visitors are very welcome at this event. More details of the coffee morning and the club generally can be obtained at www.candsprobus.club or by contacting Dave Vickery on 01263 824306.
Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club
Geoff Mather, last year’s Chairman, stood in as chairman for the lunch meeting on 3 November at the Links Hotel in West Runton. He was delighted to welcome Tony Ireland and Michael Webb to the Club at their first meeting as members. The guest speaker was PC Barrie Cresswell, Beat Manager of the Cromer Safer Neighbourhood Team on the subject of ‘Policework in North Norfolk’. Barrie explained the structure and ways of working for the north Norfolk area and answered questions from members. A vote of thanks was proposed by Jack Broughton. As an additional event in November, we held a coffee morning in the hope of attracting new members to come and meet us informally. Twelve members, five wives and two visitors attended. Furthermore, both of the visitors intend to join, so it must have been an enjoyable occasion for them as well as us. A rather mysterious artist called Gaetan James has chosen Cromer for a series of intriguing monochrome paper cuts that depict the dramas of everyday life taking place on the backdrop of our familiar Cromer streets and buildings.
It seems Gaetan James became fascinated with Cromer whilst working in an attic studio in Church Street, peering out of the window he began to notice all the subtle details of everyday life here. James says ‘sometimes nothing is more difficult to see than what is right in front of us – albeit lurking in the shadows’.

The papercuts are on show at The Gallery Norfolk, 3 Church Street, Cromer.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Although now nearing the end of the year the kittens continue to arrive. One of the kittens mentioned last time is now in care but the other continues to evade capture. A further six kittens have also come into care from the colony and a young mum and her three kittens have also joined us, having been found dumped in an alley near a fast food outlet when the kittens were only about two days old. Another litter is waiting to come in when we have space available; these are being cared for by a lady who has provided shelter for them, their mother and another kitten once she realised they had been abandoned. Some of the kittens from the feral colony have already left for new homes together. We have also said farewell to some of the other kittens and also several older cats, India, lovely black girl helping prepare the including one lovely black lad who is over 13 years old. Christmas Hampers in her new home
Providing food, veterinary care and cat litter for all the cats does cost the branch a considerable amount of money each year and without the help of our volunteers who are prepared to give their time to raise money, we would not be able to continue. On 21st November we held our annual

Christmas Sale in the St Benets Hall, North Walsham and despite the inclement weather and several other events taking place, we raised £1659.46. We are extremely grateful to all those who helped at the sale but must make special mention of Bren and Jenny for all the lovely Craft items they made, and to Andrea for the cakes, sausage rolls, mince pies, scones, etc. she provided, not only for the cake stall but also for eating at the sale. Barbara and Val, two of our friends, had a stall at Dereham Cats’ Protection on the same day and they raised £151.25 there. These two ladies are known as the “old dears with ears” when fund raising for us and throughout the year they attend car boot sales and hold garden sales to raise money for the cats even though they live some distance away. It is hard work but they are happy to do this knowing that the money will be spent on the cats and kittens in our care.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Keeping Fit and Healthy –
American Football Club Opens At Sheringham High School
A new weekly American Football sports club has been opened at Sheringham High School.
The club was launched last month as part of the Council’s Sports Clubs and Hubs project by Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and Sheringham South Cllr Judy Oliver. The Council’s Sports Clubs and Hubs team has been working with the school since February, initially creating a boxing and street dance club.

A share of proceeds from sales will benefit The Wells Charities and The Young Sailors Exchange Project (Wells/Oxford, Maryland)
Students from the school then carried out a survey to see what other sports clubs students would be interested in and Flag Football, a type of non-con tact American Football, came out as one of the most popular.
Now the students, with help from Wyn Nurse from North Norfolk District Council’s Sports Clubs and Hubs team and Head of PE Mr Mclinchy have launched the club just for pupils. The club meets every Wednesday between 3.15pm and 4.15pm.
Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “Health and wellbeing is a council priority and our sports clubs are all about getting young people involved in sport early on. Physical activity is part of a healthy lifestyle for all age groups and it was great to see people enthusiastic and starting a new sports club.”

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER PICKING CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS FROM THE GARDEN
Holly and Ivy have been used as winter decorations since ancient times. Decorating homes with these plants ‘freshened’ the air and their greenery reminded occupants of the coming spring. While the cold, dark days of winter turned much of the landscape dreary, holly and ivy remained green signifying eternal life, and the bright red holly berries provided cheerful spots of colour.
Additionally, these evergreen plants were believed to have magical properties. In some ancient cultures, the howling, icy winds in the dark nights of winter were thought to be ghosts and demons. Decorating with holly and ivy was thought to ward off these evil spirits. Holly has long been associated with winter holidays. Early Europeans used holly as ornamentation during their winter solstice celebrations to signify the gradual lengthening of days and the coming of spring. The use of ivy also goes back thousands of years. The fact
that ivy stayed green throughout the year led some to believe it had magical properties and it symbolised eternal life, rebirth and the spring season. In some cultures ivy was a symbol of marriage and friendship, perhaps due to its tendency to cling.
It is really satisfying if we can decorate our houses using greenery from our own garden and if you don’t have evergreen plants that can be cut for Christmas decorations this is a good time to make plans for future years.
There are some 400 varieties of holly but possibly the most commonly grown variety is Ilex aquifolium, which with its numerous garden varieties is extensively used for hedging or as a single specimen tree. All species have inconspicuous , five petalled green or white flowers with male and female flowers usually being borne on separate trees. It is therefore necessary to have male and female plants growing close together to ensure that berries are produced. The varieties ‘Argentea Marginata’ and ‘Handsworth New Silver’ have gained an RHS Award of Garden Merit’ and are very attractive.
Ivies produce two kinds of growth, juvenile or runner growth with, with lobed leaves and aerial roots which attach
themselves to any surface, and adult or arborescent growth, which has leaves with waxy margins and no aerial roots, and which bears flowers and fruit. Cuttings taken from the arborescent growth, will retain the adult form and develop into rounded, bushy shrubs. Recommended varieties include Hedera canariensis with green leaves that turn bronze in the winter and H. colchica, the Persian Ivy, which has many attractive varieties.
However although we normally think of holly and ivy to complement the fir Christmas tree it is worth walking around the garden to see what other foliage can be used such as bay, rosemary, hebe, pittosporum, eleagnus and myrtle.
So, this Christmas, bring your garden indoors and don’t rely on commercial baubles and tinsel. A couple of hours foraging in the garden could bring plenty of good material, not only foliage but stems, berries, cones and seedheads which can be used to bring some natural magic to your home. CROMER FLOWER CLUB
What a lovely and entertaining evening we had in November when Anne Colby demonstrated ‘All the Good Things’ associated with the 50s through to the 2000s with delightful flowers and foliage. Her stories were amusingly relevant to many in the audience and we were happy to reminisce with her.
Anne judged our competition, which was a bottle arrangement and Val Kirkwood was best in show.
As always, we had a wonderful number of decorated chocolate boxes, 32 in all, which will be distributed to Halsey House for the residents to enjoy at Christmas.
Our next meeting will be on Monday 14 December at 2pm at Cromer Community Hall with a Christmas demonstration given by David Wright. Visitors are welcome at £6 per ticket.

Community Sports Centres offer pre-Christmas activities Christmas Roller Discos and a wide range of sport
A wide-ranging line up of children's activities has been organised at North Norfolk District Council-managed community sports centres during the run up to Christmas.
The varied sessions have been designed to offer healthy and fun activity for four to 12 year-olds, while helping busy parents meet the challenge of school holiday childcare.
Both Cromer and North Walsham sports centres will host three days of activities from December 21 to 23. The sessions are aimed mainly at seven to 12 year-olds, with one activity for four to seven year-olds.
Staff at North Walsham Sports Centre will hold an Activity Day featuring various sports and a quiz on Monday, 21 December, from 9.30am to 2.30pm. On Tuesday, 22 December, there will be a Pirates session from 9.30am to 11am, Capture the Flag from 11.15am to 12.45pm, and Dodgeball from 1pm to 2.30pm. On Wednesday, 23 December, there will be a Football Fun Day from 9.30am to 2.30pm. All are open to seven to 12 year-olds.

Gresham’s sponsors successful North Walsham Rugby Club Minis Festival
Children and coaches from ten Norfolk and Suffolk-based rugby clubs took part in North Walsham Rugby Club’s 39th Mini-Rugby Festival, sponsored by Gresham’s School.
Despite windy and muddy conditions, the day was a huge success for everyone who took part.
Gresham’s Rugby Coach, Sam Curtis, assisted by some current and former members of Gresham’s 1st XV Rugby team ran a fun rugby game where children had to try and throw a ball through a cut-out rugby player to win prizes which included signed rugby balls by Old Greshamians and England and British Lions Internationals, Tom and Ben Youngs, an undoubtedly popular addition to the Festival!
The teams who took part in the Festival ranged in ages from U7s to U12s and included players from Swaffham, Norwich, Holt, Wymondham, Diss, Bury St Edmunds, Lowestoft & Great Yarmouth, West Norfolk, Southwold and North Walsham.
On Saturday, 19 December, there will be a special treat for roller skating enthusiasts.
All three Council community sports centres at Cromer, North Walsham and Stalham, will hold Christmas Fancy Dress Roller Discos.
All sessions have a strict 80 skater limit and there will be prizes for the best costumes. The Cromer disco will run from 12.30pm to 2.30pm, the Stalham disco from 4pm to 6pm and the North Walsham disco from 7pm to 9pm.
Cabinet Member for Leisure, Health and Wellbeing Cllr Becky Palmer said "As a Council we promote all sorts of healthy activities for a wide range of ages. These pre-Christmas sports centre sessions promise to be both fun and healthy. Please come and get involved, your child may discover a sport or an interest which they have never had the chance to try before."

THREE ON THE TROT FOR BAKER
Just over 30 years ago Cromer squash player Jeff Morris tragically died on court and the club decided to honour his memory by instigating a tournament for players aged 35 and over which was held for the first time in the autumn of 1985.
This year was the 30th anniversary of that first tournament and, in the final last month, John Baker, who first won the title in 2004 and was runner up in 2008, completed a hat-trick of titles and won the prestigious event for the fourth time in all as he defeated the club captain, Martin Sanville 10-8 9-4 9-4 in a repeat of last year’s final.
Baker’s natural game is to drive the ball hard into the back corners and in fact Technical Director Barry Starling said that he still hits the ball cleaner than anybody else in the club. However in the second game he added a new dimension to his play with a series of well flighted lobs into the forehand corner and these proved effective as he dominated the game to lead 8-2 and eventually take it 9-4.
The third game followed a similar pattern. Sanville who had played a hard John Baker (left) quarter and semi-final as well as a demanding team game earlier in the and Martin The Cromer club were delighted week started to make unforced errors and Sanville that Jeff’s daughter, Debbie, was although he battled gamely throughout among the large crowd on the Norwich Road Baker’s greater balcony and that she was able to present the consistency proved trophies at the end of the match to the two decisive as he won finalists. the third game 9-4 to Date Height retain his title. Baker, who has also won the club championship four times and is the reigning club veterans champion went into the final as the clear favourite, but when Sanville opened up a 5-2 lead after a successful series of sliced backhand
John Baker, Debbie Banner (Jeff's daughter) and Martin Sanville
volleys it looked as though an upset was possible. Baker soon got into his stride however and a succession of winning rallies enabled him to lead 8-5. Sanville responded well to draw level at 8-8 but Baker eventually closed out the
Last year Baker had said that as a young man Jeff had given him every encouragement when he applied to join the fire service more than 30 years ago and to win the title on its thirtieth anniversary would be special and so it proved. He said “although the final score was 3-0 the match was much harder than that and if Martin had taken the first game the result could well have been different” Sanville said “I just wanted to give a good account of myself and
