Eric, Pete, Margaret, Jo, Isaac & junior cub reporters Bracken & Merlin plus all the distributors wish everyone a happy and peaceful Christmas break and a prosperous New Year.
Christmas Lights Sponsorship
On Friday 27 November, the Cromer Christmas Lights volunteers accepted a cheque for £3000 from Sally Burton, Sales Executive at the Cromer office of McCarthy and Stone, who are building prestigious 1/2 bedroom flats at Justice Court.
This large donation comes at a crucial time for the volunteers who have incurred huge replacement costs this year.
Our thanks for this sponsorship and for the amazing support from traders and businesses and the residents of Cromer, who have all helped make the Christmas illuminations extra special this year.

Dear Margaret,
We are writing to thank all of those who supported us and the Cromer and District Foodbank at our fundraising dinner on Friday 20 November at the Constantia Restaurant, East Runton. It was a fun evening with good food and entertainment from Simon Curtis and the Constantia Brothers. The Right Honourable Norman Lamb MP popped into the event and generously donated a bottle of signed House of Commons Wine and tea for two at the Houses of Parliament, which were auctioned and raised a stunning £200 on the night. People also generously donated 24 bags of much needed supplies to the foodbank which will support those in need in North Norfolk over this festive season. A stunning £642 was raised on the night and we would just like to thank everybody for their support and generosity. Yours sincerely, Michael & Laura White, Cromer Ex Service Men’s Fund
Dear Margaret,
I would like to say thank you to Chris Gray (site foreman) and George and Reece, working for Lovell Homes at the Gallus Fields site in Northrepps, for their kindness. I have had health problems this year with cancer and chemotherapy, causing me back pain and leaving me needing a hip replacement and struggling on two crutches. I went to the building site opposite my house to ask if I could buy a breeze block to put in front of my step which was too high and causing me problems. I was given a block and when the gentleman carried it over and saw my step he said that if he had anyone free he would send someone over to see if they could build me something better. I could not believe it when, less than an hour later, workmen were measuring up to do the job, and then George and Reece came over and built me two steps in brick with slabs which have helped me so much and made it safer for me. I cannot believe that, in this day and age, such kindness still exists. I cannot praise Chris Gray of Lovell Homes and his team at Gallus Fields, Northrepps enough for what they have done for me. Sue Swann, Northrepps

Spiced Butternut Squash Soup by Matt Stacey, Chef at the Dales, Upper Sheringham Full of flavour and quite healthy too - enjoy!
Ingredients 1kg butternut squash, peeled and deseeded 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp butter 2 onions, peeled and diced 1 garlic clove, thinly sliced 2 mild red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 850ml hot vegetable stock 4 tbsp crème fraîche, plus more to serve
Method Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Cut the squash into large cubes, then toss in a large
roasting tin with half the olive oil. Roast for 30 mins, turning once during cooking, until golden and soft.
While the squash cooks, melt the butter with the remaining oil in a large saucepan, then add the onions, garlic, ground cumin and coriander and ¾ of the chilli. Cover and cook on a very low heat for 10-15 mins until the onions are completely soft. Tip the squash into the pan, add the stock and the crème fraîche. Put the soup into a liquidiser in batches and blitz, until smooth.
Pigs in the Park – a curly tail… Countryside rangers at North Norfolk District Council have struck up a deal with a Norfolk pig grazier to help reduce dense bracken and bramble in a section of Holt Country Park. The innovative approach to keeping bramble and bracken at bay will see six Large Black Pigs let free to munch their way through the undergrowth. If left to grow unchecked the bracken and bramble would smother out other species of plant and make it harder for them to flourish.
The pigs were let free to roam in a 20mx20m area in Holt Country Park at the end of last month. The pigs, owned by Mark Tasker of Wildwood Farm in North Elmham, have come hot-foot from Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse. Cllr Becky Palmer, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture at North Norfolk District Council said “I think this is fantastic. It makes perfect sense to use the pigs’ natural instincts to curb the dense bracken and bramble and I hope that this idea really catches on for other areas of the district. “We will post warning signs up in the park and make sure the signs are visible from the path so country park visitors and dog walkers are aware.”
Return to the pan, gently reheat, then season to taste. Serve the soup in bowls with swirls of crème fraîche and a scattering of the remaining chopped chilli. Add croutons or toasted seeds to give a different take on this soup.
01263 824555 01263 838383 01263 579579
People are being urged not to feed the pigs as Foot and Mouth disease can be spread from kitchen scraps and dog walkers are being asked to keep their dogs on a lead in this small area for the benefit of the pigs and dogs. The pigs will be kept in a 20m x 20m area that will be penned in and provided with everything they need, a warm shelter, water and some supplementary feed. They will also be checked at least twice a day to ensure the highest standard of animal welfare.
A survey of the ground flora will be taken before and after and compared to other areas of the park where bracken and bramble has been thinned without pigs. The Large Black has lop ears with a long deep body and a placid temperament. For more information about the breed check out the Large Black Pig Breeders Club online.
CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB
Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club held its annual Christmas Lunch on 1 December at The Links Hotel, West Runton. Fifty five members, wives and guests were welcomed by the Chairman, Ron Coleman, and enjoyed a convivial atmosphere and a delicious lunch.
The Club celebrated its 40th birthday in May this year and the Chairman, after referring to this, spoke briefly about the origins of Probus. The first club for retired or nearly retired professional and businessmen was started 50 years ago in Welwyn Garden City. Each club is autonomous and today there are over 2000 such clubs in UK, with around 4000 world-wide and a total membership of over 300,000. Probus Clubs in rural areas are often few and far between, unlike Cheltenham for instance which has ten clubs, but the basic concept is the same – to make and meet friends over a good lunch and enjoy a wide variety of visiting speakers.
A vote of thanks on behalf of wives and guests was proposed by the Chairman’s wife Jill, who wondered whether perhaps meetings could be held fortnightly or even weekly!
Our next lunch meeting will be on 2 February but there is a chance to get to know us at an informal coffee morning on Tuesday 12 January to be held at the Hole-in-One Sports Bar at The Links from 10.30am, when wives and guests will again be welcome. More details of the coffee morning and the Club generally can be obtained at www.candsprobus.club or by contacting Dave Vickery on 01263 824306.

Cromer Pier toilets win national title Refurbished toilets win ‘beaches’ category
North Norfolk District Council’s refurbished toilets on Cromer Pier have won a national award in the beaches category of the 2015 Loo of the Year Awards.
The Loo of the Year awards feature an inspection process covering criteria including signage, decor, maintenance, fixtures, fittings, cleanliness and overall management and customer care. The Cromer Pier toilets were refurbished following severe damage incurred during the destructive storm of December 2013. The toilets feature energy saving lighting and dementia friendly signage. The beaches category covers public or privately owned toilets within 50 metres of the shoreline.
The Cromer toilets were refurbished by Thrower & Rutland and designed by SMG Architects of Sheringham – the same team responsible for toilets in Happisburgh and Sheringham which have also been recognised at the same awards in previous years.
Cabinet Member for Assets Cllr John Rest said “All of those involved in the design and upkeep of these toilets are to be congratulated, including our contractors. It’s a team effort to maintain the consistent quality of a site which is open to the North Sea elements.”
A range of National and UK awards were announced and presented at the 2015 Loo of the Year Awards at the St Johns Hotel in Solihull on Friday 4 December.

Council to provide free parking on the weekend before Christmas No charges on 19 & 20 December
The Council has decided to, once again, waive the parking charges prior to Christmas, as in previous years. The decision supports North Norfolk's businesses and traders by encouraging people to buy their Christmas gifts and supplies in their local towns. At a crucial time of year for the retail community, it is also a gesture of goodwill for the festive season in response to requests from businesses. Cabinet Member for Assets Cllr John Rest said "At such an important time of the year for retailers, it is vital that the Council supports local businesses. There are scores of excellent shops across the district offering a wide range of goods and services. By providing this weekend of free car parking, we hope to encourage people to use that wealth of provision." On December 19 and 20, shoppers will be able to stay throughout the day without a ticket in any North Norfolk District Council run car park, saving them up to £1.20 an hour.

Crab & Lobster Festival News
Planning for the 2016 Crab & Lobster Festival is well under way with Cromer and Sheringham each devising new and interesting events to attract the visitors. Each town is promoting its own unique flavour and character during this ever popular festival of food and fun for all the family. The Festival takes place on the weekend of 21 - 22 May, starting on Friday evening with an opening variety concert at Cromer's unique Pier Pavillion Theatre. The fun continues on Saturday and Sunday in Cromer, and a full day of events and activities in Sheringham on the Sunday too. Key to the success of the festival is the Art Trail which involves local shops & businesses, and which attracts visitors from Easter until the end of August. Each year the trail is different, so far we have promoted giant crab & lobster models, deckchairs, life rings, windbreaks, boat planters and ships wheels... each individually decorated, displayed and auctioned for charity during late August bank holiday. Last Year the 100 wonderful ships wheels raised £5000, and the festival committee met this week to decide on the distribution of funds to a number of local grant applicants who will be notified shortly. We are proud to announce that the 2016 Art Trail item will be sourced and produced entirely locally. "About With Friends" not only run their cafe in Cromer, but also a catering enterprise, gardening services, and they produce
wooden items for sale. The Crab & Lobster Festival has commissioned them to produce these delightful model Beach Huts. Hilary Cox, who is spearheading the trail, went over to their Cromer workshop to collect the first one, and the team will be busy producing at least 60 and possibly up to 100, all to be sponsored & decorated by local businesses, artists, groups and individuals. Contact the Festival via its website to bag your dinky beach hut, there are millions of fun ways to decorate it, and have it ready for display by Easter 2016 www.crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk

Village Hall Lottery Success
A north Norfolk village will benefit from lottery funding which will help it in its bid to provide their community with a new village hall.
Carpets, Flooring and Blinds
Trimingham’s current village hall, known as The Pilgrim Shelter, will eventually be replaced at Staden Park, much further inland than the present hall. The new hall will support community facilities such as health and leisure services, for example fitness classes, bingo, bridge, health surgeries and a youth club. The Pilgrim Shelter, built more than 80 years ago, is gradually coming closer to the cliff edge and officials now predict it is unlikely to survive beyond another 20 years. Now thanks to a Big Lottery Fund grant of £28,260, Trimingham Parish Council will be able to develop plans for a new village hall and community centre with space for 200+ people, car parking and improved access.
FREE UNDERLAY, GRIPPER AND DOORBARS
As well as the cash award they will benefit from on-hand lottery advisor support to bid for funding for the final part of the project which could see an award of up to £350,000 to £400,000 which will pay towards the capital costs of the build.
North Norfolk District Council has been working closely with Trimingham Parish Council for the past 18 months to prepare a series of staged successful bids for lottery funding from the Lottery Reaching Communities Grant scheme.
The lottery success comes on the back of North Norfolk District Council assisting Trimingham Parish Council with a grant of £200,000 from the DEFRA sponsored Coastal Pathfinder Fund in 2010, part of which has already helped to buy the land for the new village hall.
Deputy Leader of North Norfolk District Council and Ward Member Cllr Angie FitchTillett said “I’m absolutely delighted that the project has been successful in securing this development grant from the Lottery Reaching Communities fund. “This grant will help the development of the replacement village hall which will be at the heart of village life for future generations.”

Fred's Return from Borneo Adventure
On 10 November cabinetmaker Fred Corbett from West Runton returned home after trekking in Borneo.
Fred funded the trip himself so all money raised would be split equally between two charities, The Ellen Mezzetti Memorial Fund at Epilepsy Research UK and Classroom In The Clouds, which is a charity that helps fund education for children in remote villages of Nepal.
After arriving in Borneo, Fred recounts "we trekked through dense humid rainforests with torrential rain most afternoons, which swelled small streams into raging torrents, which had to be crossed on small slippery bamboo bridges. We saw a wide variety of plant, insect and animal life, narrowly missing stepping on a viper and were plagued by leaches. The nights were spent in small tents listening to the frogs calling until dawn. The climb up Mount Kinabalu was a tough trek up steep rocky uneven paths. Our goal was a lodge at 3200m above sea level. The last of our party did not arrive until 8pm at night, two hours after dark - cold, wet and physically exhausted and very emotional. At 4.40am the next morning, a deep rumble signalled a 5.2 earthquake, luckily only lasting two seconds and not long enough to do any damage. The previous earthquake earlier this year, which had done considerably more damage, meant we couldn't complete the last 800m to the summit. So, after watching a spectacular sunrise above the cloud base we headed back down the mountain and on to the renowned Orangutan Sanctuary at Sepilok. Finally, white water rafting down the Kiulu River brought the enlightening and challenging adventure to a close.
We would like to thank everyone who has donated to these two very worthwhile charities. So far we have raised over £1000”.
Anyone who would like to donate please go to mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/fredcorbett1
Thank You

Cromer Honours Awards for year ended 31 December 2015
The Cromer Town Council Award Scheme to recognise significant achievement by an individual, or group, enters its 19th year. So far well over 100 people or groups have received the awards, which are presented by the Mayor of Cromer at the Annual Town Meeting. Every year one hears of work or a deed being done within our community which enhances the quality of life in our town or of its inhabitants. Much of this work by its very nature, goes largely unrecognized and may not be fully appreciated by the community at large. Who is eligible for an Award? Any person, young or old, and group or organisation, is eligible to be considered. The Council is looking towards anyone who has made a significant contribution to the quality of an individual, or wider community life in Cromer, during the last year. If you know someone, a group or organisation, who you feel should be considered for an honour, please contact the Town Council office for a nomination form which must be completed and returned by noon on 28 February 2016. Copies of the nomination form can also be downloaded from the Town Council website www.cromertown.org Cromer Times 484 December 19th 2015

CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS - REVIEW DAVID KEATING (Classical Guitar) Templewood, Northrepps
Having won many prizes in Ireland, and attended master classes with some of the world’s most eminent guitarists including John Williams, David Keating has given many recitals across Ireland and the UK - today he chose Templewood,, for the second concert presented by Cromer Music Evenings within the current series. Keating opened the programme playing three dances, Courante, Ballet and La Volta by 19th century composer Michael Praetorius, who wrote a collection of 300 dances. Next came three pieces by Cuban composer Leo Brouwer, The Harp of the Warrior, Fleeing of the Lovers
14
through the Valley of the Echoes and Ballad of the Maiden in Love. Here Keating adapted the Cuban rhythms and idioms with consummate ease. J S Bach’s Chaconne from the Violin Partita No 2 in D Minor, BWV 1004 was magnificent in performance lasting 13 minutes, displaying the sheer mastery Keating has of the guitar. Before the interval, two pieces by John Williams - with whom Keating performed a master class - From a Bird and Hello Francis were well received by the enthusiastic audience. The second half opened with three popular pieces in Latin style, a refreshing contrast to the
listener - then two Celtic folk tunes, Spatter the Dew and Palm Sunday - certainly of an Irish flavour. Three Venezuelan pieces followed - Los Caujaritos, Como Liora una Estrella and El Totumo de Guarenas. The last item on the programme Verano Porteno and Primavera Portena by Astor Piazzolla confirmed that this young artist has a brilliant future ahead in the world of music - not only in his skilled playing but in his stage presence being so relaxed, and yet audience friendly. After prolonged applause came an encore of a beautiful calming work. Terry Keeler

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
It is Cats Protection policy not to re-home cats and kittens at Christmas because it is not the best time for them to settle in their new home. A cat needs time to get used to new sights and smells and with so much going on in the house it could be very stressful for them and not at all conducive to them settling. When a cat arrives in its new home it will need time to adapt and adjust to its new surroundings and, with so much happening and possibly lots of visitors, this would not happen. We do offer advice to new owners so that the initial period required adapting to the change in circumstances is not stressful for them or their new cat. Arriving home with the new member of the family, it is best to take one step at a time to help them adjust and make life easy for everybody. We would suggest that the cat is put in a room with food, water and a litter tray and be allowed to explore by itself for an hour or two. When you do go into the room, get down to his level and speak to him quietly. It he should decide to hide, just sit quietly in the room, talking to him but not trying to force him to come out. It you do try to force him it will take him longer to accept the changes in his life. It he does hide, do not worry as this is normal behaviour if he is a timid cat. As long as he has food and water and a litter tray in the room, he will take advantage of them in his own good time. Offering treats or using fishing rod toys may help to tempt him out and a good way for you to bond with him. Once he has settled you can then introduce him to the rest of the family and allow him to explore other areas of his new home, albeit a bit at a time. Having made these suggestions, cats do love to prove us wrong and some will walk into their new home and be happy and settled straight away. With kittens, the process is different but more of this next time. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

Bindi’s Ordeal
At Toll Barn Vets, North Walsham, we are enjoy being able to care for a variety of different pets.
Most of these come from loving homes, however, we are also proud to be able to help many local charities and rescue centres caring for sick, abandoned or stray animals.
Bindi has had a rough start in life and was found roaming the area with terrible injuries to her legs which look suspiciously like they come from a snare trap. One of her front legs had severe damage to the toes, which had caused the claw to grow inside the skin and made it extremely painful for her to walk on the leg. Her back leg had lost almost all of the skin up to the hock (ankle) joint. Thankfully, there were no fractures involved, we undertook surgery to remove two of her toes which were too badly damaged to heal.
Bindi has now recovered from surgery and had several weeks of bandages to help the wound on her back leg to heal. She is now fully recovered and, apart from her scar, shows no signs of her ordeal.
The RSPCA East Norfolk Branch rescued Bindi when she was found injured and have been caring for her with some much needed TLC ever since.
Bindi is now well enough to be rehomed so if you think you could offer her a well-deserved new start in life please contact RSPCA East Norfolk on 07867 972870

Improved waste and recycling information for North Norfolk Christmas, New Year and 2016 wheelie bin collection dates
New waste and recycling calendars will help people across North Norfolk understand how their wheelie bin collection dates will be affected by public holidays such as Christmas, New Year’s Day and Easter.
Every year North Norfolk District Council’s collection dates over the Christmas period and other public holidays differ slightly, sometimes taking place a day or two earlier or later than expected.
The new calendars show when wheelie bins will be collected over the next 12 months, from this December through to November 2016.
Cromer Times 484 December 19th 2015
Each calendar is specific to the usual day of collection, so people with Monday collections will receive different calendars to those with Tuesday collections and so on.
The calendars show any changes to collections as a result of public holidays by showing the actual collection date highlighted in yellow. If the dates have not changed they will appear in white. On the reverse side, it illustrates what can go in the green recycling bin. Calendars will be hung on wheelie bins following emptying.
Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk
District Council, said “The aim is to provide improved information about collection dates which have been altered by public holidays. These calendars are clearer than ever and will be delivered to everyone across the district with a wheelie bin.”
Waste contractors Kier started to deliver the newly designed information to all households with wheelie bins on 30 November.
The information can also be seen online at www.northnorfolk.org/bincollection. Simply enter your postcode and then select your property name. 21

Veronica Zappia from Aylmerton has been teaching yoga for 10 years and her classes have always been light-hearted, sometimes even silly, but always fun.
22-Dec
One day, Veronica explains “I had an idea that it would be fun to teach yoga to children. So without any research I just went on-line and booked an intensive children's yoga teacher training course staying in an ASHRAM somewhere in India.
Wow what a shock, but amazing adventure it turned out to be. It took 23hrs to finally reach the ASHRAM. To say basic would be an understatement. My accommodation was sort of a big hut shared with three others. My bed was like sleeping on a wooden bench (I averaged 3/4 hrs sleep per night). The bathroom was a dodgy toilet and two taps, bucket and jug for a shower (which was shared with my room mates after a 17 hr day of lectures, practical sessions and meals that had to be taken in silence).
Each evening the rats partied in our roof, although it sounded like they were in our room! Both the huge mosquitos and ants were very hungry! One day, I came out of dining room to be greeted by a cobra with its hood up - I'm afraid I have to say I broke the silence rule just this once and another time during Yoga Nidra (deep relaxation) I was shouted to grab a branch from a tree and race over the hills, through the long grass, to help put a fire out. I have to admit to crying all the way to the fire thinking long grass means scorpions cobras spiders etc!
