Cromer New Year’s Day Fireworks

Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

On behalf of Cromer New Year’s Day Firework Committee, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone that made this year’s event the most successful in raising over £12,000. The many people behind the scenes who help put this all together, and particularly to Clive Casburn of Premier Fireworks, who creates a very special and individual display, that makes this a ‘must see’ way of beginning the New Year.

Thank you too, to the very generous folk who donate towards the event, which will enable us to put on next year’s event, and give grants to local good causes. Any group or individual who would like to apply for a small grant should contact Cromer Town Council (clerk@cromertown.org )

Macmillan Cancer Support Collection

Morrisons at Cromer allowed the North Norfolk Branch of Macmillan Cancer Support to collect at their store on 15,16 &17 December.

A total of £1583.98 was raised. This is a tremendous amount and will be used by Macmillan in North Norfolk.

Thank you to all who contributed and especially to Morrisons. Without their co-operation and support this event would not have taken place the community spirit and compassion that they show to the local population is priceless.

We also had brochures and leaflets on display this year and were surprised at how well this was received and the interest that was shown. Our work is not all about collecting money - promoting awareness of the work that Macmillan do is also extremely important and helps people who otherwise would have nowhere to turn.

Through the North Norfolk Group's fundraising activities this year we are again able to offer a limited number of FREE support holidays, organised by Diabetes UK, during the summer of 2016. These will be available for children and young people with diabetes between the ages of 7-10 and 11-17 who live in Norfolk.

The holidays are invaluable for the youngsters, allowing them to gain skills and confidence to help them deal with their diabetes among others of the same age. Some go on holiday having never met anyone else with diabetes before. So to be able to leave thinking “I’m not different from anyone else” has to make it all worthwhile. 100% of them said that they had benefited from their holiday.

If your child is at all interested, please encourage him/her to contact Jackie or David on 01692 405492 or email diabetes.uk@hotmail.co.uk All contacts will be acknowledged on a first come first served basis. Whilst we are prepared to fund the holiday, you would be expected to organise travel and provide pocket money.

Details of the holidays for 2016 will be available from us early in the New Year.

Crayford & Abbs Support Sidestrand Hall School

Crayford and Abbs Nissan Main Dealer for North Norfolk are pleased to support Sidestrand School.

Sidestrand Hall School is a local authority special school located on the outskirts of Cromer, serving pupils aged 7 to 19 with complex needs. They provide residential provision (term time only) for pupils to develop independence and social skills.

Crayford and Abbs recently supplied & sponsored a Nissan NV200 van. It also had a two bar fitted FOC by Fakenham Auto Electrical and Graphics supplied by Rock Solid. Its main purpose was to help in the movement of charity shop goods between school and their ‘Strands’ shop in Cromer. Shop co-ordinator Liz Locke absolutely loves it and has even started some house clearances! Headteacher of the school said ‘pupils are really motivated in loading it up and unloading it and have a real sense of pride in it.

Chilli & Chocolate Braised Venison

A very happy new year from all of us here at the Grove.

After a tremendously busy Christmas period we’re closed for January to give our staff a well-earned rest. We are lucky enough to have a superb team here who all work very hard and we appreciate everything that they do. Our winter menu has been very well received and Icarus Hines’

Norfolk venison was the undoubted star. This version has an unusual chocolate and chilli twist, perfect for warming up those long nights before spring arrives.

We look forward to seeing you all in 2016.

Ingredients 2 tbsp vegetable oil 1½ kg diced stewing venison

3 large carrot, roughly chopped 1 onion, roughly chopped 1 tbsp cumin seed 1 tsp ground coriander large pinch of chilli powder 1 red chilli, whole 1 heaped tbsp plain flour 500ml red wine 300ml beef stock 400g can chopped tomato large thyme sprig 2 bay leaf 50g dark chocolate (more than 70% cocoa solids) Method Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4.

Heat the oil in a large casserole dish and brown the meat in batches.

Add the vegetables in the dish and brown lightly, then stir in the spices, chilli and flour, and cook for a few mins.

Pour in the wine, stock and tomatoes, then add the herbs. Bring to a simmer. Cover with a lid and put in the oven for 1 hr 30 mins, then remove the lid and cook for a further 1 hr until the meat is

Remove from the oven and leave to cool slightly, then stir in the chocolate and serve.

“It’s a common misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I run Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor, qualified Family Mediator and Collaborative solicitor.

As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. The common misconception is that a larger local firm or city firm is better but this is incorrect. A client just pays more.

When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I am one of the few solicitors that offffers a free first appointment so that clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision.

I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 823465 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

Cromer and Wells benefit from £100,000 government grant Coastal Revival Fund helps two heritage sites in North Norfolk

A £100,000 government grant will help breathe new life into two heritage sites in North Norfolk.

J’s WEDDING CARS

Surround your day with elegance and romance on your special day. Arrive in a beautiful authentic vintage car painted in ivory and black.

The Cromer West prom Art Deco block renovation and the Wells Maltings Project have been awarded £50,000 each under the national Coastal Revival Fund scheme.

The purpose of the Coastal Revival Fund is to help kick-start the revival of at-risk heritage sites that have potential to create opportunities for new businesses and jobs.

It seeks to support communities looking to unlock the economic potential of those hard-totackle buildings, facilities and amusements such as piers, lidos and proms.

The Cromer grant will be used by North Norfolk District Council to support the renovation and rejuvenation of the Cromer West promenade Art Deco chalet block. The block was severely damaged in the storms which ravaged the North Norfolk coast in December 2013.

The Wells grant will help the Wells Maltings Trust develop a landmark heritage, arts and community project in the Grade II former Maltings building in the centre of this rural, coastal community. The building will be transformed into a community space, heritage and learning centre, auditorium, café and central box office and tourist information centre.

The Coastal Revival Fund money will pay to refurbish, repair and reconfigure the existing Maltings building.

Cabinet Member for Assets Cllr John Rest said “Both the Cromer and Wells projects support the local economy and help create income for the community. We appreciate the fact that both of these bids were successful and look forward to the projects proceeding in the new year.”

Norman Lamb MP commented “I am delighted that Cromer has won this support. All along the North Norfolk coast we have seen two years of hard work to get back to ‘business as usual’ after the Tidal Surge. Communities have really pulled together. This is another piece of the jigsaw and I hope Cromer prom will continue to go from strength to strength,” said Mr Lamb.

Becky Jefcoate, Wells Maltings Project Development Manager, said “We are very excited to hear the good news about the Coastal Revival Find, which will help us transform the Maltings into a landmark visitor attraction next year for local people and visitors to enjoy.”

JAZZ IN JANUARY

Jazz continues to flourish in this region. Over the last few years, The Goat Inn at Skeyton has developed a reputation as the home of traditional jazz in North Norfolk and the very popular Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band will continue to play Sunday afternoon sessions on the first Sunday of the month in 2016. The exception will be March when it will be the second Sunday. The music starts at 1.30pm and admission will be free. You can just drop in for a drink and enjoy the atmosphere or choose to eat in the garden room, where the band plays, or in restaurant. If you would like a table for lunch, however, it is essential to book. Tel: 01692 538600. The regular band is John Gooding (cornet), Tim Densham (clarinet and saxophones), Bill Brewer (trombone), Peter Gregory (banjo and guitar), Liz Underdown (bass) and Vic Brown (drums).

Jazz at The Hub, the bar at Sheringham Little Theatre, is another success story. The venue provides an alternative to traditional jazz with an emphasis on small combinations of musicians from within the region playing a variety of styles. Since the venue started promoting monthly events on Sunday evenings in September 2014, it has had capacity audiences. The first date of the New Year will be 31 January when local trombone maestro Dave Amis will lead the eclectic Cyan Traces. The band always plays new and varied programmes, which keep it fresh and appealing. The line-up will be Dave Amis (trombone), Holly Graham (vocals), Tom Harris (piano), Ivars Galenieks (double bass) and Alex Best (drums/percussion). Tickets £10 from the box office Tel: 01263 822347 or on-line at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com 8

New Year films in Northrepps

North Norfolk’s most talked-about film society, in Northrepps, has two very different films coming up.

On 4 February we have Eat Drink Man Woman, an early work by the director of Life of Pi with themes of love and food that follows the fortunes of a widower and his daughters as they look in their different ways for happiness and fulfilment.

Then on 3 March we have Oil City Confidential, a superb, very original documentary about the Essex band Dr. Feelgood, which has been described by many as one of the best films they have ever seen.

Come to one of these films or come to them both! They start at 7.30pm in Northrepps Village Hall where doors open at 7pm for drinks and chat beforehand. Tickets are £5.

More details can be found at www.northreppsfilmsociety.co.uk.

We look forward to seeing you! Andrew Gilling

Cricket lovely Cricket … or is it?

Roger’s sole aim is to defeat the British Railways Maintenance Division Yeading East team but he is having problems assembling a team and, even when he has, the complicated relationships between the players and their wives, ex-wives and girlfriends causes uproar, which even Roger cannot escape when his wife, the usually docile Mim, rebels.

‘Outside Edge’, based in the successful 90s sitcom of the same name, is the next production of local Amateur Dramatic Group, Stage Direct at Sheringham Little Theatre.

So why not come along and be ‘bowled over’ as this very funny play cannot fail to brighten up a dark January evening.

Performances are on Friday 22 January and Saturday 23 January at 7.30pm. Tickets at £10 are available from Sheringham Little Theatre Box Office on 01263 822347.

‘Worshipping God together, growing in Jesus, serving the world’

Cromer Times 485 January 16th 2016

Suffield Park Infant & Nursery School

The children of Suffield Park Infant and Nursery School had a fantastic time performing their Christmas plays.

The three Reception Classes performed their Christmas play called Happy Birthday Jesus. This simple retelling of the First Christmas gave all of the children the chance to learn and perform songs. The children enjoyed entertaining their parents and carers. “It was lovely to see all the children looking so happy, it brought a tear to my eye” said one parent.

to perform their play called Shine Star Shine. This was a great opportunity for the children who had a fantastic time working with other children and adults from different classes.

The Year One children worked collaboratively

have put into their Christmas Productions.” said Mrs J Bradford, Head Teacher. The Year Two classes performed their Christmas play entitled A Miracle in Town. This was a lovely way of retelling the Nativity Story using modern songs.

‘Regifting’ to Leeway

Ladies, did you receive any Christmas gifts which were not quite to your taste?

Perhaps you were given toiletries of a brand you don’t use, or given some foody treats you no longer wish to eat, now that you’re desperately trying to stick to your New Year’s resolutions! If so, you can help others by ‘regifting’ them to Leeway, the Norwich Women’s Refuge. They are collecting such gifts in The Virgin Money Lounge in Norwich throughout January.

Luckily for us, though, we don’t need to go as far as that. ‘Strands’ charity shop, near the traffic lights in Cromer, are acting as a collection point and will deliver the items to Norwich at the end of the month.

So please, consider ‘regifting’ in this way to offer some help and comfort to women in very difficult circumstances, many of whom have had to flee their homes in fear, leaving everything behind.

If you simply wish to buy toiletries or other items to donate, these would also be very welcome.

Thank you, Laura Duncan

STRAND CLUB

Our Christmas party was well attended and provisioned by members and committee. An impressive spread gradually filled our table, whetting our appetites. We would like to thank everyone very much.

We welcomed Voicemale and their choir master, Stephanie, and were soon transfixed and delighted by their beautiful sound. They had chosen songs from around the world and although we had heard none of them before,

Local Fishing boat calls RNLI for assistance

The pagers of Cromer RNLI sounded on Tuesday 5 January and a request was made for D 734 - George and Mildred - to be launched. The crew of the ILB were soon afloat and made their way to the scene, which was approximately one mile off shore. With a moderate sea state and an easterly wind blowing off the pier side of the beach.

we loved it all. Such skill they displayed, singing completely unaccompanied by any instruments and their only guide being a gentle 'ping' from Stephanie's tuning fork and a few notes from her to set them going - plus of course, plenty of practice and talent!

After 20 minutes or so, we allowed them to rest and join us in our Christmas tea which was so extensive that we had to fill the table with the savouries first and only when they were depleted could we display the sweet course. We all enjoyed a very sociable time with the choir members, particularly when it was discovered that they had won the vast majority of the raffle prizes! The Pavilion rang with "Draw it again!" "Pick another one!" and plenty of laughter. Soon it was time to continue with their programme. This half of the proceedings took the form of seasonal songs which we all much enjoyed and joined in with.

All too soon their wonderful voices were quiet

as Glo cut her amazing Christmas cake and she and Josie packed each slice for us all to bring home.

Our meeting on 10 February will be Extend exercises with Lindsey Davis which are done to music and which, Chris can guarantee, are great fun. These will take place back in our normal venue of the Sports Pavilion in Overstrand and at the usual time of 2.30pm. As always, visitors are most welcome and will be asked for £2 entrance money at the door (members £1). Raffle tickets will also be available throughout the afternoon. Please come and see what you think of us. We now allow men to join us as members so do please suss us out!

More information may be obtained from the joint Programme Co-ordinators Glo Begley on 01263 576539 and Chris Wood on 01263 579433.

Carpets, Flooring and Blinds Chris Gill RNLI Shore crew

A local boat with two fishermen on board was reporting engine failure and despite the efforts of the ILB crew, the engine could not restart, so it was agreed to tow the fishing boat to shore. At 08.18 the fishing boat and ILB was back on the beach and by 08.35 the 'George and Mildred' had been rehoused and made ready for its next call out.

FREE underlay on carpets of £11.99sqm and over

Billy Gaff (one of the fishermen) said, ' I am very impressed by the work performed by the ILB and Cromer RNLI Station as a whole'.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER GET RID OF YOUR GARDEN WEEDS

AnnuAL WEEDS Bring up annual weeds by shallowly working the soil with a hoe. If you hoe too deep it may bring up ungerminated seeds to the surface.

Over the years there have been some bizarre and unusual art installations in the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern in London. The current work is called Empty Lot and is the work of Mexican sculptor Abraham Cruzvilleges.

Two large stepped triangular platforms, created with scaffolding, support a grid of triangular wooden planters. Each planter was filled with soil collected from parks, heaths, commons, green spaces and gardens across London. Some compost was added and the planters are lit and regularly watered. However nothing has been deliberately planted in the soil. Flowers, mushrooms or weeds may or may not grow, dependent on what is already in the soil, what seeds or spores are carried in the air or what people drop into the structure. For the artist the project is about feelings of hope and expectation, as much as it is about whatever may or may not happen over the six months of the installation.

Equally, back in the ordinary world, it is always amazing what grows in any soil that is left uncultivated in our own gardens. Weeds can grow in great variety and numbers and at amazing speed which can intimidate the gardener. These weeds can be controlled but first the type of weed has to be identified. Some are annuals, such as hairy bittercress and chickweed, and have a one - year life cycle that ends with them setting seeds for the next generation. Others are perennials, like dandelions (having a lifecycle longer than one year).

Common annual weeds include: CHICKWEED This weed thrives on rich soils, quickly smothering other seedlings and spoiling the appearance of borders. Remove it promptly before it flowers. SHEPHERDS PuRSE Rosettes of leaves grow all year round sending up characteristic heart-shaped seed pods after white flowers. Buried seeds can germinate after 30 years of lying dormant in the soil, so prevent a potential problem by removing plants and seedheads as soon as you spot them. GROunDSEL Produces seeds all the year round. Although hoeing seedlings is effective, remove larger uprooted plants as these can still set seeds that will germinate.

PEREnnIAL WEEDS If you wish to use a weedkiller, treat perennial weeds with the ‘systemic’ weedkiller glyphosate, which is applied to the foliage but absorbed into the plant’s sap stream. The chemicals go all the way to the roots and kill all parts of the plant. It’s a slow acting but efficient method. Common perennial weeds include: GROunD ELDER

Underground stems grow beneath the soil surface and wind indiscriminately around garden flowers. Patience is the key if you want to dig out these rhizomes and the job may have to be repeated several times. You can apply a glyphosate-based weedkiller. Alternatively you can lay a weed control membrane between plants to help suppress the weeds. DAnDELIOn Recognisable to us all – you can dig out the long tap root by hand or spot treat with a glyphosate stick. Further follow up treatments may be necessary. BInDWEED The twisting stems of bindweed can swamp flowers and shrubs in borders. Try pushing a pole or cane into the border next to the bindweed to encourage it to climb and then apply the systemic weedkiller with less risk of it getting onto nearby specimen plants.

It will be interesting to go back to Tate Modern in March and see what plants and weeds have grown. Bob Wilkinson

Over two evenings around the streets of Cromer and two days outside Morrisons, the Club raised over £1600! A large amount of this will go to the President’s preferred charity - the Canaan Homeless Centre in Sheringham.

Rotarians gather for the evening sleigh collection

Some £250 was collected during the first evening followed by £274 the following night. Then, on the Friday and Saturday at Morrisons, the Club collected £448 and £642 respectively.

“No one can quite believe this year’s collection”, commented Club President, Debz Conisbee. “Indeed, it is twice the amount raised last year and beats the previous best over recent years by over £200. We are so grateful to the people of North Norfolk and to our collectors – both from within the Club and friends from outside.”

A major portion of the proceeds will be presented to the Canaan Trust at a special meeting of the Club on January 27.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Now that Christmas is past and New Year celebrations over we look forward to finding loving new homes for the many cats and kittens in care. Titania has already left to join her new family and Lottie and Pearl will be leaving us shortly too.

Volunteering for the branch will no doubt see us face many challenges during 2016, and without all the wonderful people who give up their spare time to help the cats, in whatever capacity, we would not be able to continue. As well as our fosterers, and the people who help with either the cat care or fund raising, we must not forget our supporters who give us donations, goods to sell or food, beds, blankets and toys for the cats. So many caring people out there are all willing to help the needy cats in North Norfolk, the area covered by our branch. We thank you all and look forward to seeing you during 2016.

In the last article we mentioned ways of helping your cat to settle in its new home and indicated that for kittens the process is different. We would suggest that, like a cat when he arrives in his new home, the kitten should be put in a secure room with his litter tray and bowls but should not be left alone until he has settled. A warm bed at ground level (a cardboard box will suffice) should also be provided. Once he has had a look round, show him where his litter tray, etc. are. He may be unsettled to begin with so, when not with him, a soft toy or low volume radio might help him feel at ease. As kittens are very inquisitive and love exploring, check for any hazards round the house and be aware that they can squeeze into the smallest of spaces, as many of our new owners have discovered. Block off any gaps between cupboards, etc, screen off open fireplaces and always supervise your kitten if you have an open fire. Keep all windows shut (and toilet seats down) and ensure all wires are protected and out of reach. You will find your kitten will frequently sleep for long periods throughout the day but, when he is awake, he will

enjoy short play sessions. Treat him gently and respectfully and give him lots of love and he will grow up to be a happy well adjusted little cat.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

Songbird Survival

Eddie, Lynn and the volunteers at Songbird Survival held a special evening at The Lighthouse Inn in Walcott on 4 December when Keith Skipper conducted the draw, making for a very entertaining evening.

Chairman Robert Middleditch and Michael Hope from Songbird Survival also attended.

Organisers would like to take this opportunity to thank local businesses and local people who kindly donated prizes. The total raised was £1,130.

‘It is nice to know that local people can be so generous’ said Eddy ‘especially local residents who have given items for our table top sales which we hold throughout the year. We must also thank Steve at The Lighthouse Inn for all his help and support. Thank you everyone who comes to our sales and gives us their support’.

Cosmetic Surgery and Non-surgical treatments for 2016

The popularity of cosmetic procedures is on the rise. A high proportion of men and women would consider surgical or non-surgical procedures today.

There have been amazing advances in technology and our understanding of age related changes allowing us to achieve results with minimal recovery time.

At the same time there has been a shift in attitudes. Stretched artificial appearing facelifts of the 70s are out. Patients today want a natural, fuller and fresher appearance.

We also now understand that bigger, more invasive surgeries do not necessarily provide better results. These are associated with prolonged recovery periods and higher risks. A lot of doctors and patients are moving away from these. Today more than 80% of cosmetic procedures are non-surgical or minimally invasive and this number is going to rise further as newer and better treatments come along.

Let us look at what is driving this change... We now know that facial ageing is more than just sagging skin. In the past you would have major facelift under general anesthesia. You would bruise and swell for weeks and you would look tighter but not necessarily younger! We now know that the face deflates due to loss of soft tissue such as fat and even bones. We also know that skin quality also suffers. So now we address all these aspects of facial ageing. Lasers have come of age and can repair and rejuvenate the skin. Soft tissue fillers or even fat can replace lost volume and if we do these two treatments we don’t need major facelift. A less invasive alternative is

just as good and provides more natural appearance. We can now do facelifts under pure local anaesthesia with no to minimal bruising and no to minimal recovery period depending on the extent of surgery.

For body contouring also you do not need general anaesthesia. It can be carried out purely under local anaesthesia with fine instruments while you can be listening to music. You can also utilize the removed fat and recycle it for enhancing other body parts such as hands, breasts or buttocks. Possibilities are endless.

For more information log on to our website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call us on 0800 0430737. We have full range of non-surgical to surgical options to choose from.

Latest Big Society Fund grants agreed

Groups encouraged to apply for next round The latest round of Big Society Fund grants have been agreed, with North Norfolk District Council supporting a wide range of groups, including musicians, young footballers and girl guides.

NNDC's Big Society Fund offers grants of up to £15,000 to voluntary and community organisations based in North Norfolk.

Since the fund started in 2012, in excess of £1,000,000 has been awarded to more than 100 community projects.

The committee which oversees the grants meets four times a year. This time they approved grants totalling nearly £27,500. The awards are subject to each group agreeing to formal terms and conditions.

BSF grant awards in this round were awarded to: • Stalham Brass Band (£3,000) towards musical instruments. The band offers opportunities for children aged 6 to 16 who attend schools in the Stalham area to learn to read music and play brass instruments. • High Kelling Society (£4,199) to buy portable, easy to assemble staging to be used in the village hall for social and cultural events. The staging will help increase the use of the hall, which until now has had no stage or raised platform. • Sheringham Girl Guiding (£5,000) for conversion of a cupboard to a purpose built level access shower and toilet at the guides’ headquarters. In the past limited facilities have been highlighted as a reason why the headquarters is not used more by external organisations.

Weather with Ned Nimbus

The past three months were as forecast, the main theme being the warm or very mild conditions throughout.

Overall 2015 for us was ok, beginning with a mild winter then average conditions except for the majority of August, which was poor.

Things got back on track, however, in September. UK wide the west and north suffered with a lot of rain and when it came to the recent record-breaking deluges, a saturated ground could take no more.

Atlantic wise the hurricane season was benign. This is the fourth year now that predictions of increased activity, off the back of climate change, have not materialised.

The next three months will basically follow on from the previous three months although there is now a greater chance of days with temperatures below normal but none of these colder spells should last long.

The end of February and then during the second half of March look favoured for some well above average temperatures. Ned Nimbus 18

• Happisburgh Hammers Youth Football (£2,300) to buy football goals, football kits and match footballs to accommodate the increased club membership numbers and age range. The Hammers were established last year by a group of local parents concerned about the lack of opportunity for their children to play youth football. • Northrepps Parish Council (£3,675) for the replacement of play equipment at Northrepps Adventure Playground, to improve and enhance provision for children of all ages. • North Walsham Gymnastics Club (£9,248) towards a larger project called Dream, Believe, Achieve, which will enable the club to move into and furnish a new venue with gym equipment and build toilet and changing facilities.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and Cabinet Member for Big Society, said “The Big Society Fund continues to help fund or part-fund projects which are making a real difference to people across the district. The type of organisations it helps varies widely in terms of age groups, activity type and location. We are helping people in both towns and rural areas improve sporting facilities, play areas, music bands, museums, heritage, lunch clubs and to buy defibrillators. I would encourage groups and organisations to realise how wide that range is and put in an application.”

If you have an idea or a project that you wish to develop and apply for funding, you are encouraged to speak to your local Councillor and get in touch with the Council (via Sonia Shuter 01263 516173, email supporting.communities@north-norfolk.gov.uk) or visit www.northnorfolk.org/bigsocietyfund

The Regency Act 1937 and restrictions on the use of LPAs Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

The case of XY v Public Guardian (2015) involved a very wealthy individual who in making his Lasting Power of Attorney (“LPA”) wished to impose detailed guidance and tight restrictions upon his Attorneys.

The case was brought by the Public Guardian (“PG”), the head of the administrative arm of the Court of Protection, who refused to register the LPA because of the conditions. XY was a high-worth individual who owned assets in numerous countries and wanted to include additional safeguards. The conditions were intricate and aimed to ensure that decisions could only be made on his behalf when he clearly lacked capacity and there was a genuine financial need for a decision to be made. The provisions were lengthy (five sheets) and required two psychiatrists’ opinions and the opinion of a ‘Protector’. The role of the Protector was to review the medical evidence before the LPA could be used. These provisions were similar to the Regency Act 1937 (the law that governs how decisions would be made in the event of the monarch lacking capacity). The Protector was a third- party who had to agree with the medical evidence before the powers conferred on the Attorneys by the LPA could be used.

The PG objected on the basis that most of the conditions imposed were an unreasonable fetter on the Attorneys’ power to act and were therefore ineffective under the Mental Capacity

Act. One of the main concerns was that the ‘Protector’ was not an Attorney, yet was in a position to interfere with the Attorneys’ duty to act in the best interests of XY. The Protector was not bound in law by the same duties as the Attorneys.

Even though this case is very specific to the facts and concerns an extremely rich person, essentially it is about the question of whether the LPA is effective “only when I don’t have capacity” in accordance with the prescribed form of an LPA, or not. There is something akin to a government health warning in the new-style LPA, as follows: “Be careful – this can make your LPA a lot less useful. Your attorney might be asked to prove you do not have mental capacity each time they try to use this LPA”. The question therefore is does “a lot less useful” mean the same as “ineffective”?

The Senior Judge who decided the case told the PG that “it is not part of his statutory duties to police the practicality or utility of individual aspects of an LPA.” This was a polite rebuff to the PG not to involve himself in such matters. The conditions in the LPA were difficult and complex but did not make it ineffective.

The case makes it clear that there is a distinction between a Protector who confirms incapacity (allowed) and third parties sanctioning decisions of attorneys (not allowed).

Contacts: Julie Chance, Town Clerk Janet Warner, Deputy Town Clerk (Office hours Mon, Weds, Thurs & Fri 10.00 – 13.00) The Clerk and Deputy Clerk are often in meetings so it is recommended that you telephone or email to make an appointment before visiting the offices.

Dates of Meetings: 7pm, 18 January 2016 – Cromer Town Council 7pm, 19 January 2016 – Works & General Purposes Committee The schedule of meeting dates for 2016 can be found on the Town Council website. Members of the public are welcome at all meetings which are held at North Lodge unless stated otherwise. Agendas and minutes of meetings are available from the Town Council website www.cromertown.org.

Councillor Vacancy - There are currently two vacancies on Cromer Town Council. Details will be available on the website and noticeboards.

Cromer Cemetery - Despite official signage being in place, we are continuing to receive complaints that visitors are letting their dogs foul in the cemetery and are not clearing up behind them. Please could all visitors keep their dogs on leads, clean up and take home any mess. The bins at the cemetery are for compostable and general waste only. Please take dog mess home to dispose of. If this continues to be a problem, the Town Council will consider taking enforcement action.

new Year’s Day Fireworks - A big thank you to everyone involved in the arrangements for the New Year’s Day Firework Event and also to everyone who attended and donated. To date a fabulous £12,366 has been raised. Donations can still be sent to the Town Council Office at North Lodge clearly marked NYD Fireworks. Any local charities

Annual Grant Scheme 2016 - Every year the Town Council budget for a small amount of funding to be made available to local organisations. Anyone wishing to apply is asked to contact the Town Clerk for an application form. The deadline for receipt of applications is 25 March.

Cromer Honours Awards for year ended 31 December 2015 - The Cromer Town Council Award Scheme to recognise significant achievement by an individual, or group, enters its 19th year. So far well over 100 people or groups have received the awards, which are presented by the Mayor of Cromer at the Annual Town Meeting. Every year one hears of work or a deed being done within our community which enhances the quality of life in our town or of its inhabitants. Much of this work by its very nature, goes largely unrecognized and may not be fully appreciated by the community at large. Who is eligible for an Award? Any person, young or old, and group or organisation, is eligible to be considered. The Council is looking towards anyone who has made a significant contribution to the quality of an individual, or wider community life in Cromer, during the last year. If you know someone, a group or organisation, who you feel should be considered for an honour, please contact the Town Council office for a nomination form which must be completed and returned by noon on 28 February 2016. Copies of the nomination form can also be downloaded from the Town Council website www.cromertown.org

Memory Book - The Town Council has arranged for a Memory Book to be produced in which the names of community stalwarts who have died in the previous year will be recorded. The book will be updated to coincide with the Cromer Honours Awards and the names read out at the Annual Town Meeting. Anyone wishing to make a nomination for inclusion in the book is asked to contact the Town Council Office by 28 February 2016. We are also looking for a calligrapher to write the names in the book. If you are able to help please get in touch.

Rock Bodham Presentations

Proceeds from the Rock Bodham charity music event have been distributed to worthy causes at a special handover event held at Bodham Red Hart.

Rock Bodham, which was held over two days in July and attracted over 1000 people has donated funds of £3000 to 9 local charities for 2015. The committee donated money to four Bodham causes, Bodham Playing Field (£500), Bodham Church and Village Hall (£250 each) and Bodham Croquet Club for lawn improvements(£100).

A further four charities were nominated by local businesses and individuals who have given their time or services to ensure the event could run at all.

Cargills farms, who loaned us use of a generator nominated the uckingam Emergency Food Appeal (£200). Mik Godfrey, who has for the previous 4 years donated his time to bus people back to local towns nominated Sheringham RNLI (£200) and presented the cheque to senior helmsman Dave Hagon. Will Beeson of PREVA Produce, who donate a curtain side lorry which is used as stage for the event, nominated East Anglian Children's Hospice (£200). Mike Waters, who compered Rock Bodham as well as playing, suggested a further donation to Norwich Soup Movement (£150).

Chairman Darryl Biss thanked those who made the weekend possible saying "we are a small committee and it is fantastic that we have been assisted by so many local businesses and individuals in many different ways, to be able to give away £3000 is a fantastic achievement for all involved."

Missing in Cromer since Thursday 7th Jan

The final cheque of £1000 was presented to Janet Acott, for the Ronald Macdonald House Charity (Camberwell) in memory of Janet's son David, who lived in the village and died earlier in the year aged only 17. The charity provided them with home from home accommodation when David was in hospital for a prolonged period. Janet was supported by many of David's friends and family at the handover.

Speaking after the handover, event secretary Callum Ringer said it was important “we raise money, not just for village organisations but also recognise charities which help people from the village. We are really pleased to be able to raise some money for a charity close to the hearts of David's family and friends, and in his memory".

The handover was closed by a set from local duo AudioJack.

Rock Bodham 2016 will take place on 23 and 24 July and will be the fifth edition of the event. More details will be announced for this early in the new year.

Double Double for Baker!

John Baker is once again the veterans champion at Cromer Squash Club.

In an absorbing and entertaining final the defending champion retained his title as he overcame the challenge of Gary Spruce 9-3 9-6 9-6 to add the Over 45 title to the Over 35 title which he won last month. Baker now has two veterans titles to add to his four Over 35 titles and four club championships not to mention the three handicap titles, the first of which he won more than 30 years ago.

Two years ago the two players met in the final of the Over 35 tournament, a tournament in which Spruce pushed Baker hard before eventually losing 3-1, but this year’s final was much more clear cut. Spruce started the match well, opening up a 3-0 lead in the first game but this was as good as it got as Baker reeled off a succession of winning shots to take the game 9-3. In the second game the challenger opened up another lead as he went 5-3 ahead but Baker is now a hugely experienced competitor and he regained the initiative to lead 8-5 before taking the game 9-6.

The third game followed a completely different pattern as it was Baker’s turn to open up a seemingly unassailable 6-0 lead only for Spruce to gradually claw his way back until he trailed by just one point at 6-7 before Baker took the next two points to take the game 9-6 and the match 3-0.

Technical Director Barry Starling, who actually took a game off Baker in the quarter final, said afterwards “Johnny B was just too good for Gary. He has a wealth of experience and hits the ball so cleanly so it was no disgrace to lose to him. The way he is playing I think he has got a few more club titles in him yet.”

In the semi-final Baker defeated the tournament’s oldest entrant and the man he beat in the final of last year’s tournament, John Chandler, in straight games while Spruce Louise Ellis had an epic match against the club’s team Foot Practitioner captain and the man who beat him in TCFCPa, RGN the semi final of the recent Over 35 tournament, Martin Sanville. He saved Routine Nail Care match ball in the fourth game and came Hard Skin Removal back from 0-6 down Corns in the fifth to win 5-9 Orthotics 3-9 9-3 10-9 9-6, a performance which Home Visits Date GMT Starling described as 07710 435123 16-Jan 05:11 “brilliant”. 11:06
