Slow Food Aylsham donates 100 recipe books to foodbank Recipe booklets were on the menu when Slow Food Aylsham presented Cromer and District foodbank with 100 copies of a publication produced by the Aylsham-based organization.

The booklets were specifically designed with the foodbank’s food parcels in mind and include recipes which have been produced and tested by members of Slow Food Aylsham, together with local chef Derrol Waller. Wipe clean and ‘open flat’, the booklets are very kitchen-friendly. A spokesperson for the foodbank said, “We are sure they will be helpful, and a source of inspiration for our clients.”

Cromer and District foodbank exists to help individuals and families in crisis situations. Its clients access services through front-line support groups such as Citizens’ Advice Bureaux, School Parent Advisors, Health Visitors, Housing Associations and Money Management Advisors, all of whom hold foodbank vouchers. The vouchers can be presented

New Puzzle Page & Competition

at one of the distribution centres in Aylsham, Cromer, Holt, North Walsham, Sheringham or Stalham in exchange for a food parcel sufficient for at least three days.

The foodbank feeds over 2,000 people in a year, a number which continues to rise. Reasons for needing foodbank services are many and varied but can include: • a change in circumstances, resulting in stoppage of all benefits until new amounts are assessed • bereavement • redundancy • unexpected repair bills.

Details of foodbank locations and opening times, as well as advice on where to obtain vouchers is available from Project Manager Ella King on 07826 376 343 or email info@cromerdistrict.foodbank.org.uk

Slow Food Aylsham is a voluntary membership organisation, part of the worldwide Slow Food movement. As well as working closely with inside this issue the local community,

Cromer & District foodbank Project Manager Ella King (right), received the recipe booklets from Slow Food Aylsham Chairman Mo Anderson-Dungar

it organises the Aylsham Food Festival, held each year at the beginning of October. There is more information at www.slowfoodaylsham.org.uk For further information about Cromer & District foodbank, please contact: Ella King 07826 76 343 ella@cromerdistrict.foodbank.org.uk Information about Slow Food Aylsham is available from: Roger Willis 01263 732 437 or 07833 096 931 rogerwillis77@gmail.com www.slowfoodaylsham.org.uk

Day Centre Revamp

Age Concern North Norfolk in Sheringham is only a small independent charity and relies heavily on kind donations from the public, local initiatives and fund raising organisations to help deliver the much-needed services we provide to the public.

One such service, our day centre on Cremer Street in Sheringham, was badly in need of being redecorated but sadly we could not afford to do so - until we learnt of the Community Payback Team.

Community Payback is a scheme that punishes offenders for their crimes but also allows them to make amends in their local community. Community Payback is part of a sentence passed down by Crown and Magistrates Courts and offenders can be sentenced to between 40 and 300 hours of unpaid work in the community.

Offenders paying back for their crimes have given Age Concern in S heringham a helping hand by redecorating our entire centre. Groups on Community Payback with Norfolk and Suffolk Community Rehabilitation Company (NSCRC) have been painting the centre giving it a new fresh, cheery, look for all that use the centre.

Everyone at Age Concern North Norfolk, staff, Trustees and clients to, would like to pass on our sincere thanks to NSCRC Team for all their hard work and effort in bringing our centre so much new life and colour.

NSCRC is always looking for new projects in the local area and members of the public can suggest projects by emailing: project.requests@nscrc.probation.gsi.gov.uk

New services in North Norfolk for those with MS and family members

Psychological support and Mindfulness based work shops for those with MS and family carers/members. Great news: MS Society North Norfolk Branch has been awarded big lottery funding to offer one to one psychological support and cognitive based mindfulness workshops in North Norfolk.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a stressful condition; depression, anxiety, pain and fatigue are all common problems. Mindfulness can help to ease stress and prevent relapse in depression and are increasingly being used in healthcare.

Each person with MS, regardless of the type and course of the illness, must adapt continuously to changing symptoms. The possible effect psychologically even for the most positive and confident of people can at times be extremely stressful.

Helping to relieve symptoms of stress and boost confidence levels are an integrative part of managing long term health conditions and help to maintain a healthy mental well-being. The physical and emotional consequences of MS - coping with symptoms, changes to lifestyle, the uncertainty of the condition - can be a major source of stress for some people and can affect one’s symptoms. With this in mind

the following services are now available:

One to one psychological support is available to those with MS and their family. This support allows you to “offload” in a safe and confidential environment. . For those who are unable to travel, home visits can be arranged.

Monthly Cognitive based Mindfulness workshops which run alongside a coffee and a chat morning based at the Sheringham Community Centre. This is on the last Thursday of each month from 10am to 12 pm. The mindfulness workshop is from 10am to 10.30am. Mindfulness approaches can help to improve emotional well-being and quality of life by managing the conditions of anxiety, stress, fatigue, sleep disorders and pain.

To find out more about the above services or how the branch can help please contact their support team on 07507087976 or at northnorfolk@mssociety.org.uk

Braised Lamb Shoulder

For this month's special recipe from the Mackenzie Hotel Group, Jamie Hood, Head Chef from the Links, presents his recipe for Braised Lamb Shoulder

Ingredients 1x lamb shoulder 2x lits of beef stock 3x shallots 3x teaspoons of garlic puree 100g salted butter 100 ml of port or red wine

tender to the point of falling apart take out of the stock and leave to cool.

Method Buy a lamb shoulder from your local butcher and place in a oven proof bowl and cook for 2-3 hours at 160 oC.

Once the lamb shoulder is cooked and

Reduce the rest of the stock down with the port or red wine until thick and dark in colour. Then dice your shallots and sweat down with the butter and garlic. When your onions are cooked add your stock to the mix.

Flake down your lamb shoulder picking out the fatty pieces and placing into a bowl. Add your shallot mixture and slowly fold together adding seasoning to taste.

Practice Makes Perfect

Tickets are already selling for The Sheringham Players March production, comprising an evening of one act plays under the title “Practise Makes Perfect”, both of which are based around events that do not always go according to plan.

The first play, written by Lee Fewitt and directed by Hazel Randall, is entitled “Is There Anybody There?”, a drama set in late Victorian London where Mrs Carrington, a blind clairvoyant, summons the spirits for those who are willing to pay. However, when one of the party is possessed by the spirit of a murdered girl strange happenings occur, when doors are locked and time stands still. Is it for real or are they being deceived? And is there a link to other murders that have happened in the area? Could any of those present be the suspect, or are there darker forces at work?. Who is the killer? Will all will be revealed, or will the spirits keep their secrets?

The second play, written by Paul Reakes and directed by Tim Travers, is

Once all is mixed in lay your clingfilm on the work surface and roll your mix into a cylinder shape and place on a tray to firm up in the fridge.

Once firm slice in a portion and pan sear and warm through.....

.... then eat and enjoy!

01263 824555 01263 838383 --01263 579579

entitled “Bang! You’re Dead!” and is a comedy mystery thriller. Lydia and her boyfriend Marcus rehearse the murder of Theo, Lydia’s husband, which they are to commit that evening. When the victim and “perfect witness” arrive all goes according to plan except that the wrong person ends up dead. A ghastly mistake - or are there some deviations from the original plot?

In-between the two plays there is a short sketch entitled "Cindy and Julie", written by Bruce Kane and directed by Helen Simmons, and tells of two women who sit nervously in a waiting room, arguing and commiserating about the clichés of romantic love and their broken marriages.

The performance runs from Thursday 17th - Saturday 19th March at Sheringham Little Theatre at 7.30 p.m and tickets are available from the box office at £10.

Regards, Derek Welch, Sheringham Players

Musical cast includes a North Norfolk sister act

Two sisters are playing love rivals in a youth musical telling the story of one of the 20th century's most influential and tragic women. Twenty year old Paris Chandler is stepping into the starring role of Argentinian First Lady Eva Peron. And younger sister Chloe, 17, plays Peron’s mistress who is ousted by the upwardlymobile, actress turned political reformer Eva.

The sister act in Sheringham Little Theatre's Evita show is not unusual for the showbizzy siblings. The Aylsham pair have regularly been seen on stage at the town's high school drama productions – both of them taking leading roles in recent years – and also help mum Jo Chandler run her West End Experience events for would-be young stage stars. Paris, who is waiting to start an English Literature degree at the UEA said she was intoxicated by the songs and story of Evita, which told the story of a strong woman, who was “sassy, independent and ambitious” and rose from the streets to political power. They are just two of 40 young cast and crew members, aged from eight to 21, in the sixth youth production staged by the theatre as part of its community role to encourage young people to get involved in the performing arts. Theatre director Debbie Thompson said the youth productions aimed to give opportunities for talented young people in North Norfolk to “make friends, learn theatre and social skills, work as a team, and gain self confidence.” • Evita runs at the Sheringham Little Theatre from April 2- April 9 (7.30pm nightly except April 3, plus a 2.30pm matinee on April 9). Tickets via the box office 01263 822347 or visit sheringhamlittletheatre.com • The Little Theatre’s next youth production will be a mid-September concert of show songs. To get involved email debbie@sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Probate Law One of the most frequent situations I find in the contested probate law field is where there has been a second (or third) marriage and the husband or wife (or both) have children from their previous marriages. For whatever reason, the husband and wife prepare Wills, perhaps later in their lives, and exclude a child. It is remarkable how often this happens. You can understand how such a situation may arise. There are family disagreements and as the child grows up, becomes an adult and has their own life, they become distant and disconnected from their parent.

That child may have had the expectation all through their life that they would inherit money from mum or dad and it is not until the last Will and Testament is read that the child finds out that they are excluded. They are then looking for advice about what they can do next. When a client like this came to me recently, the first thing we did was examine the Will. As a specialist contested probate solicitor, I am looking to see if the Will might, for some reason, be invalid. Many are, particularly if they are DIY internet wills or prepared by an online Will Writer. It is easy to get the signing of a Will wrong and this is a way to show it is invalid. I consider the signature and the signatures of the witnesses. I will also start to ask questions about the

circumstances of the drafting of the Will and who was present , for example, was it the person who stands to benefit who acted as a witness. In this case, everything appeared to be in order and a Will prepared up by a solicitor is likely to be done correctly.

about your Will and what you want to happen with your assets. It should not have been a surprise to this client and it was only after her father died that she discovered her ideas of what would be left to her were wrong. She, perhaps, could have been saved a lot of heartache if she had only known in advance, hard as that might have been at the time.

I also look to see whether there has been a possibility of undue influence, although this can be difficult to prove. It is possible to overturn a Will if it is clear it has been made under duress. Questions can then be asked about the capacity of the person. Did they understand what they were doing? Was there any dementia or depression?

In this case, all those issues seemed to be in order and the Will appeared to be valid. The next aspect to look at is whether there is an Inheritance Act claim. This is where the Will did not give reasonable financial provision to someone who might have expected it, for example, a spouse or partner or a child or dependant. A claim can be brought in those circumstances. In the case I was advising on, the child was now an adult and she was working and supporting herself comfortably. Unfortunately, there was not anything else she could do to challenge what seemed to her to be an unfair situation.

In other cases, we succeed in overturning wills or making Inheritance Act claims, but after the event it takes a lot of hard work and time to deal with such situations, which could be avoided. At Clapham & Collinge we can provide you with all of the necessary information, support an d legal advice on Will disputes and how they can be resolved. If you require advice on Will disputes please contact Tammy Parnell on 01263 820468 or email ttp@clapham-collinge.co.uk.

VACANCIES

Based in Cromer Norfolk we have 2 vacancies one for a full-time position and one-part time position for domiciliary support workers.

This is not an easy job but it is an extremely rewarding role. You will be undertaking the support of vulnerable adults within the community. This involves every aspect of their needs - personal care, emotional support, companionship, shopping, assistance with eating, medication etc.

This is also an extremely skilled position, care workers are no longer unqualified individuals. Nowadays they work alongside the other disciplines within the community and are required to have a number of skills as directed by the care quality commission. These include moving and handling training, medication training, health and safety training. Anyone undertaking this employment must be a dedicated individual and genuinely want to do the work, it is not a light hearted undertaking.

The work varies from a days’ worth of pop-in visits, to longer sits, to live in and night sits. A car is essential, we cover North Walsham, Mundesley, Gimmingham, Cromer, the Runtons and Sheringham as well as villages within and around the surrounding area. Experience is preferred although we would give full training to the right individual. No criminal records are accepted and the hours available can be as few as 8, or as many as 40 plus.

In acknowledgement of the wonderful work our staff undertake we pay above the rate of any of our competitors. We also pay time and a half all Bank Holidays, we pay 5 weeks holiday a year (full time employees) and mileage. I believe this work ideally suits the 45 plus age group but younger individuals would be considered. We have vacancies for both female and male care workers.

Photo Display at The Old Rock Shop Bistro Local amateur photographer Bruce Page says he has always enjoyed taking snaps.

‘I bought my first DSLR camera, a Nikon d3200 in September 2014 and enrolled on a ‘City and Guilds’ evening class, through adult education, at Merchants Place’, here in Cromer.

Since then I have been on a few of the ‘Wex Walkabout’ workshops, run by the photographic store in Norwich and, last Autumn, went up to the Ardnamurchan region of West Scotland, on a workshop hosted by my former tutor Andrew Midgley (who has had some success in the national ‘landscape photographer of the year’ competition – which, as his student, was encouraging to discover!). I have continued with adult education with a more recreational group, one afternoon a week.

Other than that, it is just about keeping the camera to hand, and occasionally getting lucky on timing and location. I would not say I’m a good photographer, I have so very much still to learn, but every so often I am lucky enough to get a decent image.

A few of these are now on show at The Old Rock Shop Bistro on Hamilton Road in Cromer.

I am very grateful to owner, Sam Grout for this opportunity. Also for the many excellent cups of coffee and occasional lunches I have enjoyed there, since the very first week he opened. My main intention was never to sell the prints, but any can be purchased at £45 each. I will make a donation from each sold to the local food bank’.

Wanted - the oldest Cub Scout A call has gone out for norfolk residents to search through their family photographs, and question their grandparents or even great grandparents for the challenge of the century.

The aim is to find the oldest surviving Cub Scout or Wolf Cub in Norfolk, as 2016 sees the Cub Scouts celebrate their 100th anniversary. Norfolk Scouts also want former Cub Leaders who live in Norfolk to get in touch so that they can be invited to a Grand Howl on 25th November.

They want to make this an anniversary to remember for the 2000 Cub Scouts across Norfolk.

Scouting history goes back to Robert BadenPowell, a soldier, artist, actor and free-thinker, who was the founder of Scouting in 1907. His first camp on Brownsea Island brought together 20 boys from a variety of backgrounds. The success of the camp spurred him on to write what would become a classic book of the 20th century, Scouting for Boys.

Scouting soon became a global phenomenon and with numbers growing, it quickly became clear that young people of all ages wanted to get involved. Baden-Powell recognised that a junior section was needed back in 1914 and published his outline for such a scheme, calling it Wolf Cubbing.

It was not until 1916 that Wolf Scouts was established for younger Scouts and Rover

Scouts for the older boys. Baden-Powell wanted the junior scheme to have its own distinct name, uniform and programme.

Baden-Powell asked his friend Rudyard Kipling for the use of his Jungle Book as a motivational frame in Cub Scouting and in 1917 Baden-Powell wrote a new book, The Wolf Cub's Handbook, for the new Wolf Cubs section. Wolf Cubs were renamed Cub Scouts in 1967 and are still going strong.

The County Commissioner Nickie Chapman, and Tony Milburn, the Assistant County Commissioner for Cubs in Norfolk have launched the Cubs 100 Challenge, offering the chance for boys and girls to earn the Norfolk County Cub Challenge Badge to celebrate 100 years of Cub Scouting. The badge is a multi-part badge with an “Achieved” Arc. The badge design is a wolf’s paw print. Each toe of the paw print is worth 25 points and is awarded once a Cub Scout completes one of the four sections.

The sections are: Get Active, Adventure Camping, Look Around You and Down the Cub Hut! The Cubs can choose various activities from each section to earn points ranging from 2–10 to gain their unique badge. Norfolk Scouts have organised an “It’s a Knockout” Competition with the final in July and all Cubs will be receiving a 100th Anniversary woggle.

Nickie Chapman said: “Creating programmes that will be exciting and challenging for all Norfolk Cubs has been our main aim and the activities are designed to offer a more taxing and adventurous Cub Scouting experience to both boys and girls.

“Yes, Cub Scouts is not just for boys, it is for girls as well. I find that a lot of parents still just think Cubs and Scouting in general is only for boys, but we have, in Norfolk, sections which have girls outnumbering the boys. It is worth highlighting we also have young people with disabilities and special needs. Scouting truly is ‘For All’.

“Cub Scouts is for young people aged 8 to 10½ and operates all over Norfolk. This Cubs 100 challenge is open to all young people, even if they join next week.”

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY

Over thirty members and two guests were at our February meeting which took the form of a question and answer session with three local experts. Charlotte Philcox is well known to listeners to Radio Norfolk for her contributions to their Saturday lunch time gardening programme and she recently gave a very successful series of talks to the Cromer Society on aspects of the history of gardening. Peter Purdy owns the Woodgate Nursery and Garden Centre at Aylsham and Graham McDonald is in charge at North Walsham Garden Centre. Between them they have a wealth of experience and expertise and our members were able to take full advantage of their collective wisdom.

produces small fruits that are generally regarded as inedible! There was better luck identifying the problem with leaves from a bay tree that had been brought in. It had been attacked by a scale insect but the damage was mainly cosmetic. A word of warning about growing bay trees was given as they can grow very large if not pruned regularly. When to add compost to the vegetable plot brought two contrasting answers. Graham McDonald prefers to do this in the autumn when the soil is still warm and worms are able to pull the compost into the soil so less digging is needed. Charlotte Philcox favours adding compost three or four weeks before planting.

A number of questions focused on pests and diseases. Chafer beetles cannot be sprayed as no spray is available any longer because of new regulations. Nematodes are an effective treatment when the soil is warm enough for their use. Grease bands on pots will stop vine weevils infecting plants but it was interesting to be told that pot plants from UK sources are treated for vine weevil while The Overstrand Gardening Club held their first meeting of 2016 on those from abroad – Tuesday 2 February. mainly from Holland – are not, something The first part of the meeting started with the our Annual General to keep in mind the Meeting. The Club duly elected its committee and a new Chairman next time you are Mr Geoff Turner. Dr Joe Gaston had decided to stand down as tempted to buy a pot Chairman, the committee expressed its thanks to Joe for all his work plant. Small flies on and support over recent years.

The evening began with a poser for the panel. They were asked to identify a plant from a section of branch that had been brought in. This proved very difficult and it was only after a search on the internet later in the evening that it was found to be a variety of citrus that

OVERSTRAND GARDENING CLUB

For the second part of the meeting we welcomed Tony Smith whose talk was entitled 'All you need to know about compost'. Tony brought along various samples of compost, and showed members the different make up and consistencies. Tony explained the importance of the soil being able to breath, aeration and drainage was vital in giving the plant the opportunity in producing a good root system. Perlite helps open the compost, and Vermiculite is good for covering seeds. Alpine grit is good for Cacti, and the use of Horticultural grit is good for aeration and dressing tops of pots. The talk was well received, and gave members lots to think about. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 1 March at 2.30pm when the Gardening Club welcomes Charlotte Philcox. The talk is called 'Enclosing Eden – A history of the kitchen garden'.

Our meetings are held at Overstrand Parish Hall, The Londs. New members are always welcome, please contact Yvonne Ford on 01263 512350 if you would like further information.

indoor plants can be controlled with nematodes but just as effective, it seems, is covering the soil with a layer of sand or perlite as this stops the flies getting to the wet soil.

Some members have had problems growing agapanthus in pots. Changing the top three or four inches of compost every year seems to be the solution. The roots of fig trees need to be confined for best results as long as watering is done regularly. Another problem seems to be getting good results when growing root vegetables on sandy soils. Growing beetroot is particularly troublesome for some members. Sowing in cells before planting, sowing early in spring and keeping plants well watered seems to be the answer. Asparagus, sea kale and salsify do particularly well in the lighter soils found in North Norfolk. None of the panel was able to hold out much hope for protecting crops from muntjac deer, a very recent and increasingly frequent garden pest!

It is always reassuring to receive advice from experts and members went away from the meeting with much to think about. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 9 March at 7.30 pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. Simon Harrap’s topic is “On Natural Surroundings”. Simon has vast knowledge on wild plants, particularly orchids, so it should be an interesting evening.

Visitors are always welcome - cost £2, members free.

Local voices must be heard in national review of flood defences

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has asked the government to make sure local people have the chance to have a say in a planned review of flood defences.

Environment Secretary Liz Truss announced the setting up of a National Resilience Review before Christmas. The Review will examine the best way

16

to cope with flooding risks in the future.

"As the MP for a constituency with a near 50 mile stretch of coastline, extensive inland waterways and significant areas of low-lying land I believe it is critically important that the government is fully focused on the need to protect communities from

the risk of flooding," says Norman Lamb.

"I have asked the government to clarify the timetable for the review and to make clear how communities and local councils can have their say. It's vital that people living in places like North Norfolk can make their voices heard."

THE STRAND CLUB

34 –40 Station road, Sheringham 01263 823258 blythwright@btconnect.com www.blythandwright.co.uk

We were delighted to welcome 22 members, including two new ones and two guests to our February meeting. We hope the guests enjoy themselves and will return.

Our Chairman's first job was a sad one. She had to announce that Mavis Turner, our long standing member and onetime Vice Chair, passed away the previous Saturday. She will be remembered by many of the members and our thoughts go out to her family. A card has been sent, expressing our condolences, on behalf of the Club.

We discussed changes in the Club officers as two have reached the end of their three year tenure. Josie, as Treasurer, would like to retire but, as there were no new nominations, Jackie asked that she continue. Chris seconded this and the motion was passed. Our Secretary Jean is also ready to call it a day and had herself nominated Chris to fill her shoes. Josie seconded this and so after the AGM in March Chris will take over. Our Bring and BuySale has been moved from the AGM to our spring lunch on 11 May. This is because Miriam and Tony will be entertaining us after the short business of the AGM is concluded. They will sing and play to us, which should be very pleasant indeed.

As February is our energetic meeting, we then welcomed Lindsey Davis who is a registered Extend instructor. She led us in a series of lighthearted stretches and moves to music which we all found great fun. There was plenty of laughter and even a bit of gentle competition. Everyone enjoyed it thoroughly and were more than ready for the tea and biscuits which followed.

Jackie encouraged as many members as possible to attend the AGM which, being us, will NOT be dry and boring and will disclose our plans for the coming year. Please do come. The entrance fee is the same as always, £1 for members, £2 for guests with raffle tickets available separately throughout the meeting. For further information about our club, please contact Glo Begley on 01263 576539 or Chris Wood on 01263 579433.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

Following two successful coffee meetings in November and January, Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club welcomed eight new prospective members to its February lunch meeting at The Links Hotel West Runton. The Club, formed over 40 years ago , exists primarily to extend friendship to those gentlemen who are retired or nearly retired, meeting monthly for a good lunch and to hear informative and entertaining speakers on a variety of topics.

This month our speaker was both informative and very entertaining. As a former county cricketer and coach, schoolmaster and mathematician, Alan Ponder kept us very much on our toes with his wideranging coverage of all things sporting. After leading with five of the major requirements to be successful in most sports - skill, speed, strength, suppleness and psychology - he went on to elaborate statistically how each sport also required stamina. An average Premier League footballer covers about 17kms in a football match, exceeded however by a Test Match fast bowler who in a single day's cricket covers about 20kms. Apparently football referees, if they keep up with play (and some supposedly do not!) run much further than this in 90mins. After many questions to Alan he was thanked by Tony Lyons for his very amusing and interesting contribution.

Our next lunch meeting at The Links Hotel West Runton is on 1 March when the speaker will be Dr Tony Leech on 'Witches and Devils: the Darker side of Fungi', a very 'down to earth' topic on which he is the foremost authority in the region.

If you would like to meet a very friendly group of men for lunch and to hear Dr Leech please contact our lunch secretary, Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website, www.candsprobus.club.

Update on the Leeway appeal

Thanks to everyone in the local community for the items they have donated to Leeway over the last few weeks. The response has been tremendous. Liz Locke and her brilliant team at Strands charity shop have been amazed at the generosity of the people of Cromer. All the donations have now been taken to Leeway, the Norwich women's refuge, and I know they will make a big difference to those who have had to escape domestic violence. Thanks to the Cromer Times, as well, for publicising the project. We intend to run the same regifting appeal next January. Laura Duncan

Backlog of DBS applications poses risk to health and care sector says Norman Lamb T Televison elevison S Sales ales & S Service ervice C Covering overing N Norfolk orfolk a and nd B Broadland roadland

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has pressed the Government over reports that the recruitment of vital healthcare staff is being hindered by administrative delays. Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks are used to check the criminal records of people applying for certain jobs, such as working with children or in healthcare, but there have been reports of a vast backlog of DBS applications waiting to be processed. In an email seen by Norman Lamb, the Metropolitan Police stated that it is “working on [DBS] cases that are approximately 130 days old due to a backlog of around 71,000 applicants.” In response to a written parliamentary question, a Home Office Minister admitted that the Metropolitan Police Service is not meeting its targets for the time taken to complete DBS checks, and that a recovery plan has been put in place. Norman Lamb has now pressed the Government to be honest about the full scale of the problem. “It is completely unacceptable that thousands of people are being prevented from starting work because of Surround your day with elegance and these delays – particularly at a time when health and care organisations are already experiencing difficulty romance on your special day. recruiting,” said Mr. Lamb. I hope that the Government will take immediate steps to clear the backlog and speed up the application process, so that people can

Paralympic Star Launches Nissan Dealership’s Fundraiser

A London 2012 Paralympic Gold Medallist has helped a north Norfolk Nissan dealer kick-off a major fundraiser for the British Paralympic Association.

As part of Nissan’s relationship with the British Paralympic Association, Paralympics GB star Jessica-Jane Applegate MBE, who won gold in the S14 200m freestyle, visited Crayford and Abbs Nissan in Holt to officially launch its fundraising campaign which aims to raise thousands to help send ParalympicsGB’s athletes to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

While at the Gypsies Lane dealership, she took time to meet local schoolchildren and aspiring athletes and to chat to them about her preparations for Rio 2016.

She also met some of the many dealer staff, customers and friends who, as part of the fundraiser, will run, swim and cycle 5,876 miles – the distance between north Norfolk and Rio – by April 30th.

The proceeds will be combined with money raised by Nissan and its dealers nationwide and will help to supercharge ParalympicsGB’s bid for sporting glory in Rio. Nissan is the Official Automotive Partner of ParalympicsGB.

Kevin Abbs, Dealer Principal at Crayford and Abbs Nissan, said: “We had a fantastic turnout for the event which just goes to show what an incredible inspiration Jessica-Jane and her fellow Paralympians are to so many.

“It was particularly pleasing to see so many young people with dreams of following in Jessica-Jane’s footsteps visiting the showroom to chat to her.”

Jessica-Jane Applegate MBE said: “It’s always great to meet young people with a passion for swimming and Paralympic sport in general.

“It was also very interesting to hear about Crayford and Abbs’ fundraising campaign. The money it raises can have a real impact on the success of ParalympicsGB at the Rio Games.”

For more information on current fundraising progress, please visit: www.crayfordandabbs.co.uk. To donate, visit www.mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/race2rio.

A BLUE TIT’S TALE Diane Berthelot I’m a very busy blue tit, I keep a tidy nest, My partner’s getting friendly And becoming quite a pest! I know that it is springtime And I should do my ‘bit’ But I’m fed up with this ‘baby’ lark So I’m giving it a miss. I plan to put my feet up, My feathers need a curl. There’s a blackbird winking at me So I might give him a whirl!! ‘Ouch’ my partner has just pecked me So I’ve pushed him off the nest, I’m fed up with male blue tits, Staying single will be best!
