Cromer

Major Sponsor for Cromer Soapbox Derby Pub Challenge

Continued from front cover... Area rep, Julie Hawksworth, took control of last year’s winning entry from the White Horse in Cromer, saying “this is the first time I have been in control of a soapbox, although I have stood on one a few times” She continued “I am hoping for a new company car later this year and might suggest that this is the ideal vehicle, although I would need the occasional push when going uphill”.

The White Horse, Cromer took the prize for the fastest car in last year’s event and went on to sell their cart at a charity auction, raising funds for the Norfolk and Norwich Neonatal IT Unit (NICU). They have already raised in excess of £17,000 and are well on their way to their target of £20,000.

White Horse owner Annie Kemp said “we are delighted with the support we have received and are very confident that we will soon reach our target”.

Mike Quenby, the new owner of last year’s winning cart, is planning to enter the cart in this year’s event and his grandson Owen is already in training. Asked if he could win the event he said “we have the best cart from 2015 so we must be in with a very good chance”.

Peter MacMillan, last year’s winning driver, is confident that their new design will be even faster and is looking forward to the day. He said “I can’t wait for the event and I am certain that we will be on the top step of the podium”.

He continued “We are already underway with the new design and are lucky to have the same designer as last year. Steven Harbour did a great job and we are very pleased with the work so far”. Carnival Chairman Tony Shipp said “entries are already coming in and we have had interest from as far away as Northampton, so we are looking forward to a bigger entry than ever - and with Woodfordes agreeing to support our ‘Pub Class’, we are sure that there will be

The March meeting was well attended as usual. Our speaker was Cosmo the Clown who had stepped in at short notice. His talk was entertaining and very informative as he described very well the history of clowning. Almost all societies now and in the past have included clown or jester characters who have often had high status within those communities. Cosmo told us that having trained in acrobatics as a child, he had been a clown for the past 30 years in the Hazard Circus in Spain, and latterly with the Foolhardy Circus. He showed us some of his costumes and described his make-up for different characters. The ‘egg collection’ at Wookey Hole records the unique make-up of every registered clown. Cosmo told us the history behind the development or lineage of a clown’s persona, from Coco to Chico Marx, from Grimaldi to Grock. Cosmo then talked about his latest clown character Cos Boz, based on ‘The Tramp’. He made us all laugh as he got into role and joked with various WI members. He promised to come again to tell more stories of this interesting profession. The competition this month ‘Something Beginning with C’ had 33 entrants and was won by Freddie Abbs. Second was Elaine Spittles and 3rd place was Hazel Patrickson. Our speaker in April will be Margaret Sims, who will talk about hats. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

Overstrand WI members welcomed two men in uniform to their March meeting. The uniforms were being worn by Bob and Adrian of the Mundesley NCI or National Coastwatch Institution. The NCI has been described as the `silent army` and just how silent they are was borne out by many of the members being totally unaware of their existence. They ‘man` lookouts, often disused Coastguard stations, around our coastline. The volunteers work two clint_brown_1@hotmail.com at a time and are trained to a high standard of professionalism to `spot` and `plot’, so any activity on the water and suspect activity on the shoreline is spotted with powerful binoculars and plotted, and the information passed to the nearest Coastguard, which unbelievably is in Scarborough, hence the need for the NCIs. They are a dedicated bunch of volunteers, providing a very valuable service. One of the perks of the job apparently is the wonderful view. A stall of members unwanted Christmas gifts was well supported and items were sold or auctioned to raise funds. A group of members are getting together to make and collect things for ‘A Box of Dreams’, the competition at the Royal Norfolk show this year. Last year we were placed 2nd, so members are hoping for an even better result this year. As a result of some beautiful needlework by those `crafty` members, we have been able to donate a lovely blanket to the Glendon House Retirement Home in the village. We welcome visitors and prospective new members (you don`t have to be an Overstrand resident to join us) to our walks and monthly meetings. Our meetings are on third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand. In April we will be hearing about another important occupation connected with the sea when Mr R Smith, Wells Harbour Master, will be our guest speaker.

ROUGHTON & DISTRICT WI

We have an interesting and varied programme of speakers to look forward to for the coming months. We have already welcomed to our monthly meetings this year Paula Faires on Crazy Cupcakes, Richard Wright on pig farming and diversification, and Kate Davis, at our March meeting, who spoke about Norfolk Knitters & Stitchers. Our April meeting (Wednesday 13 April at 7.30pm.) will show us the art of Bollywood Dancing (a chance to rid ourselves of the effects of overindulgence at Easter?). Guests are always very welcome at our meetings (a charge of £3 is made towards WI.expenses). We meet at Roughton Village Hall (Chapel Road, Roughton – opposite the junction to Metton) on the second Wednesday of each month, with tea, coffee and biscuits served before the meeting starts at 7.30pm. In addition to our monthly meetings we also have groups for walking, crafts and indoor bowling, and organise visits to the theatre and racing. Do visit our website: www.roughtonwi.org.us or speak to Maureen Wells 01263 768106 for more information.

On Wednesday 16 March, North Norfolk Speakers Club held their annual International Speech and Evaluation Contests.

Contest Chair, Clive Willet, hosted a very enjoyable and successful evening, while Sue Eastman, Area Director, delivered a memorable Test Speech entitled ‘Turn Hate to Love’for the Evaluation Contest.

The standard of speeches and evaluations was exceptionally high from all contestants. Paul Rosier, who stood out above the rest with his inspirational speech entitled ‘Just a Minute’ and with his excellent and perceptive speech evaluation, gained first place in both contests - a very

simmering water. Stir gently to combine well into a dark silky liquid and set aside to cool a little.

4. Carefully fold in the melted chocolate and butter. Sift the cocoa over the top and fold in carefully.

5. Divide the mixture between the prepared moulds and leave in the fridge for up to 6 hours before cooking.

6. Preheat a baking tray in the oven to 200c.

7. Place the fondants on top of the hot tray and bake 9–12 minutes and leave for a minute before turning out into a bowl.

G.I.F.T.s Annual Talent Show

On Sunday 13 March there was a rapturous and joyous sound coming from a tiny corner of Cremer Street in Sheringham as Age Concern North Norfolk and the Good Intentions Fundraising Team (G.I.F.T) celebrated local talent. The Age Concern day centre was transformed into a mini theatre for the day as budding performing talent that spanned the generations came together to put on a show of song and dance.

There was stunning vocalists, dance troupes, from the highly regarded Marlene’s School of Dance and a family of talented musical performers; they were the MSD Dancers, Pete Phillips, Brian Brown and the Volko Trio respectively, amongst others. They all contributed immensely to a wonderful and memorable atmosphere and morning of entertainment. It was all part of the annual G.I.F.T. Talent show where local performers have an opportunity to audition for other local

shows throughout the year.

Everyone at Age Concern North Norfolk and G.I.F.T. would like to thank everyone who participated and supported the event as there were some truly amazing performances and we were all amazed at the incredibly high standard of entries. The Overall winners were The Volko Trio, comprising of Dad (Christopher) on the piano, Hector aged 10 on the vibraphone and Calypso aged 7 on the drums and they live in Holt. The father is originally from Paris. Their jive performance of ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams on piano, drums and xylophone had everyone foot tapping and dancing in the aisles and also local singer Melanie Brown who is well known to many as the face behind the Fit Together walks.

Organiser, Yvonne Tiffany, from G.I.F.T. said " I was very pleased with the high standard again this year, and think we have found something special with the talent from The Volko Trio" (they are on You Tube under The Volko Trio).

The event is all part of a yearlong campaign to help raise funds for Age Concern North Norfolk, a small local charity, that was chosen by G.I.F.T. as a deserving charity to support throughout 2016 and all funds will go back into the charities much needed and well used services like day care on Cremer Street and the Befriending Scheme.

Cromer & District Royal Antediluvian Order of the Buffaloes The RAOB is one of the largest fraternal organisations in the United Kingdom. The Order was started in 1822, and is known as the Buffs to members.

On Tuesday 15 March at 7pm the Sitting Primo, Tony Wiles, of the Cromer & District RAOB presented the Dialysis Department at Cromer Hospital with a cheque for £3,500. In his speech Tony commented “when my wife Betty, found that she needed to go onto a dialysis machine in order to remove unwanted waste products from her blood, due to the kidneys being damaged or dysfunctional, I suddenly realised how important the Dyalisis Dept & the dialysis machines are. At a meeting of the Cromer & District Royal Antediluvian Order of the Buffaloes, I suggested that our charity for 2015/ 2016 should be to raise money for the Cromer Hospital, Dialysis Department. The end product of this meeting was, after much hard work by our members & friends,

that we raised £3,500. It is now my great pleasure on behalf of the Cromer & District RAOB, to hand over to you this cheque for £3,500.

Nursing Sister Janet Dickinson, received the cheque on behalf of the Dialysis Dept.

Friends of Cromer Museum

The final talk in our winter series of meetings focused on work being carried out by archaeologists working on the annual dig at Sedgeford in West Norfolk.

Ray Baldry travelled up from Sussex to update us on the work being carried out on the skeletons that have been uncovered at Sedgeford. Ray is an osteo-archaeologist and has spent many hours examining eight of the 300 or so skeletons that have been excavated. These eight sets of remains are the only ones to show signs of trauma. By examining the bones carefully, it has been possible to suggest reasons how and why the men died.

All the men were in their 30s or early 40s and were in good health at the time of their death. The injuries that they suffered were mainly defence wounds as they all had wounds, many of them very deep, on their wrist or forearms. The wounds were inflicted by sharp blades, most probably swords or axes. Some had wounds to their skull. The skeletons date from the late 8th or early 9th centuries.

The manner of the deaths is more or less clear, but why they died is less clear cut. Blood feuds between families were common in Anglo-Saxon times as were territorial disputes and it is possible that this sheds light on the reasons why the men were killed. A more likely reason puts the deaths in the wider context of life in Norfolk at the time. Viking raids were regular and unwelcome events in the history of late Anglo-Saxon Norfolk. Sedgeford was a relatively prosperous area at the time and likely to have been a prime target. The wounds indicate that the men were unarmed at the time of their death so the likelihood is that they were victims of a sudden and unexpected attack. It is possible that the victims were brought to Sedgeford for burial as it is the site of a very large Christian cemetery. Perhaps we will never know exact details of why the men died but the work of experts, like Ray Baldry, does help us to put together realistic hypotheses. That is as much as we can hope for when considering the history of an era for which very few written sources exist.

The programme of talks organised by the Friends of Cromer Museum will begin again in September.

CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS – REVIEW Luna Tunnicliffe (Viola) and Hannah Watson (Piano). Templewood, Northrepps

These two young artists, supported by the Countess of Munster Trust Recital Scheme, performed a concert of top quality here in Northrepps – having performed at prestigious venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, St John's Smith Square, St Martinin-the-Fields and the Barbican, to name but a few.

Vieuxtemps Sonata Op.36 being the first item on the programme immediately focussed the audience's attention by the maturity of both players. Schumann said of this Sonata wherein there were no breaks between the three movements “it was a work with no beginning and no ending” and stated it portrayed a magic circle. This true masterpiece aptly suited the tenor voice of the viola producing a beautiful timbre and textures. Hindemith Sonata Op.11 No 4 in unusual form, where the three movements became continuous without the usual small pause between each one. Britten's Lachrymae for viola and piano brought such a contrast in style harmonic explorations, with dissonants being the exciting sounds and haunting melodies, stirring the imagination of the listener over the ten short variations, really testing the techniques of both performers.

Brahms Sonata Op.120 No 2 originally written for clarinet, adapted for viola and piano, called upon the skill of both players to the highest degree- seemingly they both had what was required of them, obviously enjoying the challenge. The rapport between both produced an impeccable and accomplished performance - a superb concert brought to Templewood where the standards remain excellent, bringing rapturous applause as always. Terry Keeler Spring is definitely in the air at the Art House Café with our new exhibition ‘Reed Beds and Marshlands’

Spring Exhibition at The Art House Café

featuring a beautiful range of paintings and pastels by East Anglian artists.

It’s interesting to see the different approach the five artists taking part have to the theme of the exhibition from the realistic style of Laina West through to the more abstract mixed media work of Tricia Colyer. Other artists taking part are Mari French, Ronald Durban and Ruth McCabe. We also have on display a beautiful range of glass and ceramics, including new raku penguins and puffins by Rob Rutterford, hand painted silk scarves, and jewellery with prices to suit all pockets. The exhibition programme changes every six weeks

The Art House Café is open every day Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 11am to 4pm. For further information email info@arthouse-cafe or telephone 01263 649856.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER ORCHIDS

recognisable equatorial favourites such as Phalaenopsis and Oncidium. Two towering ‘Rainforest Tree’ pillars showcased colourful Anthurium and Bromeliaceae while in the conservatory’s pond, dancing floral figures helped to capture the spirit of Carnival. On a cold and windy March afternoon it was the perfect escape from the winter blues.

With the next Olympic Games being held in Brazil we will be seeing and hearing a lot about this country in the coming months. Most of us will not be lucky enough to travel to South America to enjoy the event first hand or to enjoy the spectacular noise, colour and smells; however, in March, a taste of Brazil came to London. The Princess of Wales Conservatory in Kew Gardens was filled with the exotic flora of the world’s undisputed capital of carnival as the annual Orchids Festival celebrated the incredibly rich biodiversity of the planet’s fifth largest country, Brazil.

This vast country is home to more than 37,000 plant species that grow in six distinct ecological areas. Over 18,000 of these plants are endemic to Brazil and grow nowhere else on earth.

The horticultural team at Kew created a stunning display of breath taking beauty that transported visitors to the tropics. There were orchids suspended from the ceiling and walk through arches bedecked with instantly

It is of course very easy nowadays to buy orchids from a garden centre or supermarket to grow as houseplants. Many people start with the Phalaenopsis orchid also known as the moth orchid, which comes in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours but all have the same growth habit, which is three to five or more flat fleshy leaves, with one or two flowering stems growing from between them, and each stem can hold from six to over a dozen beautiful blooms.

The thickness of the leaf of an orchid generally indicates the climate it needs - thick fleshy leaved orchids are warm growers from the tropics, whilst orchids with thin and more elongated leaves usually like it on the cooler side. The cymbidium is a good example of cool growing orchids.

Cool growing orchids will burn in full sun, and do best in a temperature range of 50 to 65 degrees. The cymbidium actually enjoys being outside for the summer, but make sure it cannot be eaten by pests or absolutely soaked in

wet weather.

Where is the best place to keep an orchid? Well for warm growing Phalaenopsis, find a nice well lit window, ideally facing east or west, with some shade from the midday sun, perhaps provided by a net curtain. Make sure that the night temperature does not fall below 55 degrees or the plant will suffer. Water thoroughly about once every seven days in summer and about once every ten days in winter. Always water from the top and don’t let the pot stand in water. Do not overfeed, use a quarter strength solution of something like Tomorite if you do not wish to buy a specific orchid fertiliser.

If looked after properly orchids will live and flower once or twice a year for many years to come. Bob Wilkinson

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

Vicki Hease was our demonstrator for March and her title was ‘Alfresco Summer’.

As well as producing designs from barbecues to fine dining, Vicki gave us amusing anecdotes from her early days as a florist. Her flowers were beautiful and the opportunity to win one of her arrangements in the raffle was eagerly awaited by those present.

Vicki judged our competition and Wendy Randall was best in show. Our next meeting is on Monday 18 April at 7.20pm at Cromer Junior School with Crystal Dyball doing a workshop.

Visitors are always welcome.

North Lodge Park Tea Room – Licence Awarded

The opportunity to run the tea rooms at North Lodge Park has been awarded to the Friends of North Lodge Park. The award of the licence has been made after assessing a number of bids which came into North Norfolk District Council which own the Tea Rooms and North Lodge Park.

The opportunity to run the tearooms at the park was advertised in the North Norfolk News last month providing traders in the town with the opportunity to express their interest in running the café. Bidders had to complete a short template form setting out what they would provide both in terms of the opening hours at the park café and in terms of supporting activities in the park itself.

Hayes + Storr – All you’ll ever need!

A number of bids were received and the bid by Barry Meadows, Secretary of the Friends of North Lodge Park was successful as it pledged to keep the café open throughout the year and to look at investing all profits back into activities in the park.

Cllr John Rest, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member said “I’m delighted that the Friends’ bid has been successful and that the opportunity to run the licence for the tea rooms will now be on a commercial footing.

“We wanted to ensure we were being fair to all the traders in the town and ensure that we have a formal licence in place for the coming financial year.

“We will be looking for a strategic partner in 2016 to develop a long-term strategy for North Lodge Park, which will maximise its value both for the people of Cromer but more importantly for the taxpayers of the district as a whole.”

Outdoor Event - Swanton novers Great Wood on 17 April 09:00 - 13:00 - a walk in Swanton Novers Great Wood for spring migrants, though we will also be looking at plants, butterflies and possibly moths. This event is for both beginners and reasonably experienced birders.

We will visit a part of the wood that is normally not open to the general public, and we will be guided by the Natural England warden, Robert Baker. The walking is on the level, though at this time of year the wood can be very wet and wellingtons are strongly advised. There are ticks in the wood, so suitable precautions are advised (avoid shorts, for example!). We will meet at the car-park and Natural England raptor watch-point at TG 010303. This is a field off (to the north) the Hindolveston to Fulmodeston Road, just west of the cross-roads with the B1110 from Holt to Guist. The postcode NR21 0NG is for Common Farm, which is south of the Hindolveston to Fulmodeston road, but near the watch-point car-park. From here we will combine into as few cars as possible, and then make a short drive to the start of the walk. As numbers are limited for this trip, please email Andy Clarke (ac1967@cantab.net) at least 48 hours beforehand if you are intending to come. Children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret dogs are not allowed in the Great Wood. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. The leaders will be Andy Clarke (NENBC), and Robert Baker (NE).

Felbrigg Park - mid-week walk on 20 April 09:00 - 11:00 - this walk caters for all levels of ability. We will take a leisurely walk around the Park & Lake and finish with refreshments (optional) at the NT cafe. Please wear clothing appropriate to the weather - footpaths in Felbrigg can be muddy at any time of the year. Meet at Sexton's Lodge car park, off Lion's Mouth, NR11 8PS. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing.

The need to review your Will in the light of the new Inheritance Tax Residential Nil Rate Band written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

The new Inheritance Tax Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB) has it roots back in 2007 when the Conservative opposition said that they were in favour of increasing the Nil Rate Band (NRB) to £1M.

Although newspaper headlines have suggested that the new RNRB has that effect, this is very far from correct. A few lucky people will in 2020/21 have a combination of nil rate bands that add up to £1M, but they will be very much in the minority.

Because the new RNRB is very closely targeted being tied to homes and only available to lineal descendants, it can work in an illogical and unfair fashion. The ordinary NRB is being frozen at £325,000 to pay for the RNRB, whereas otherwise it would have started to increase from the end of 2017/18.

The new RNRB has to be claimed by the deceased’s executors - it is not automatic.

‘Closely inherited’ also needs careful scrutiny. ‘Closely’ means that it must pass to a lineal descendent; or to a spouse or civil partner of a lineal descendent. ‘Children’ includes step-children, foster children and children who have been adopted by a third party. ‘Closely’ does not include co-habitees, dependent or vulnerable family members.

It is possible to vary a Will so as to become eligible for the RNRB.

Only certain sorts of trust will be eligible for the RNRB and this produces unfairness and inconsistency, particularly where there are minor beneficiaries. Specialist advice is particularly necessary here.

working out the value of the estate and this gives great opportunities for clever planning, including ‘death bed’ gifts.

The ‘downsizing’ rules are complex and somewhat arbitrary. It is vital to keep all the paperwork to provide the evidence needed by HMRC in the event of death.

Once this new and extremely complicated relief arrives in April 2017, the need to take specialist advice will never have been greater. “This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. The RNRB will start at £100,000 in 2017/18 and will rise by £25,000 yearly, until it reaches £175,000 in 2020/21. Thereafter it will increase in line with the Consumer Prices Index.

Debts charged on the residence are deducted, so only the net equity gets the RNRB. It might therefore beneficial to switch secured debts to other assets.

Above £2M the RNRB is withdrawn by £1 for every £2 in excess of £2M exemptions and reliefs are ignored.

Spouses may wish to leave assets away from the survivor to prevent their aggregated estates exceeding £2M. Lifetime gifts are exempt in

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

A few weeks ago I wrote about the little blind cat that was handed into our care and had been re-homed with one of our fosterers. We knew at the time that she had serious health problems which could not be treated and just wanted to make sure her final weeks were spent in a loving home where she had a nice warm bed, food and water but, most importantly of all, someone to love and care for her. Sadly this dear little cat’s health deteriorated and a final visit to the vets had to be made. Although not with them very long, her family was sad to lose her as she was such a loving little cat.

We also wrote recently about the importance of micro chipping cats but mentioned that, if details of the owner are not recorded or kept up to date, it can cause problems as was evident when Harvey, a stray cat, was handed into our care recently by David at Bridge Vets. He had been taken into the surgery as he was in a dreadful condition and, as well as needing a dental, his coat was so matted it had to be shaved. The concerned family who took him to the Bridge would have offered him a home if his owners could not be found but, unfortunately, a blood test indicated he could be FIV positive and, as they have other cats, this option was ruled out. More blood tests will be taken once he is in better condition. As is routine practice nowadays, he was scanned to check for a micro chip and a chip was located and the number taken. Unfortunately, we now have two challenges as the chip had not been registered and the indications are that it was purchased in America. We are therefore trying to identify the company who made the chip as they may be able to provide information as to where and when it was purchased. Although we do not think that in this instance we will have any success, we will do what we can to find the original owner. Harvey is not a young cat and at present does not look his best, but is very friendly and loving. If his next blood test confirms he is FIV positive, he will need an indoor home either as the only cat in the household or one with other FIV positive cats.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Ziva a lovely light tortie girl, Cats Protection North Walsham is now on age 6 years Facebook and will keep people advised of forthcoming events, news of our cats and other activities. Information on cats and kittens for re-homing can still be found on our website and enquiries for them should still be via Stephanie.

Spring has Sprung at Animal Magic Dog Club Spring is officially here, the daffodils are in bloom and lambs are appearing in the fields.

But did you know that if your dog eats or licks any part of the daffodil – the bulb, plant or flower, they will ingest an alkaloid called Lycorine which can make your dog very poorly indeed.

Other spring plants such as tulips, hyacinths, crocuses and lily of the valley are also toxic and you should seek help from your vet if you think you dog has ingested any of these plants. It is a cruel trick of nature that some of the most beautiful, colorful springtime plants pose a deadly temptation to the four-legged members of your family.

The winter term at Animal Magic is almost at an end and we have a fun packed timetable of classes to look forward to during spring.

Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. For more information on the club and classes available please call Kathy on 01263 720730 or visit our web site www.animal-magix.co.uk

April, May & June Weather Predictions April will continue the theme, with a mix of weather and temperatures oscillating above and below average and it will not be until we are well into May that we will see a few much warmer days. There is nothing to suggest that there will be any prolonged fine weather.

June is likely to continue the balance starting to become established in May, where the percentage of fine days over changeable conditions starts to erode but, as we get some very warm days, the risk of heavy showers will definitely increase. Throughout May and June there will be some marked daily variations in temperature.

This summer is also worth watching, as conditions will be at hand to generate some intense rainfall although this might be further south over Europe. Is this the start of our promised Mediterranean climate/summer? No. Just the odd Mediterranean day. Ned Nimbus

DOT Therapy

The No 1 Anti aging breakthrough of the decade is available at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic.

*Powerfully reverses 5-10 years of skin aging, wrinkles, sun spots. *Dramatically reduces old acne and trauma related scarring. *Minimises risk of future development of skin cancers.

According to many doctors, this is a skin-resurfacing treatment known as CO2 laser therapy. If you have moderate to severe wrinkles, age spots, melasma or acne scarring, if you wish to improve tone, texture and colour of your skin then this is the treatment to have. It beats any other non CO2 laser skin rejuvenation technique.

Although ‘gold-standard’ conventional CO2 laser resurfacing achieves great results some people do not want to have the procedure repeated because of a longer recovery period.

To avoid the risks of complications and reduce recovery time recently new technology called fractional laser resurfacing has been developed. This truly is a remarkable breakthrough. Here the laser beam is broken up into many small micro beams. which are separated so that when they strike the skin surface small areas of the skin between the beams are left intact. These small areas or bridges of untreated skin promote a rapid recovery and healing with less risk of complications.

Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM, Medical Director and Laser Surgeon of Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic has more than ten years experience with lasers. He has had one to one training from pioneers of this technology in Italy and has reproduced excellent results in his clinic. Paralympics

Dr Gheyi focuses on providing results oriented, cost effective and safe treatments such as IPL Photofacial™, Laser treatments for skin rejuvenation and thread veins, injectable wrinkle treatments, dermal fillers, laser hair removal and laser and non laser cosmetic surgery. In addition to these chemical peels, diamond microdermabrasion, LED skin rejuvenation and acne, rosacea and hyperhidrosis treatments are also available.

Mrs Margaret Barker Mrs Barker has helped Mrs Jean Steward run The Tuesday Club. This Club meets in the Parish Hall on Tuesday Nights. The Club is for adults with learning difficulties. It has a Christian and social dimension. It is run by volunteers. Paid carers bring residents from homes to the club. It is very successful. Mrs Barker is not as active in it as she used to be.

Mr Ernest Lawrence (2 separate nominations received) Mr Lawrence keeps the streets of Cromer immaculately clean, above and beyond his job description. Always a pleasant person, whatever the weather! Ernest works for Kier/NNDC and has kept the streets of Cromer clean and tidy for the past 12 years or so. When Breakers Cafe posted about him on their facebook page they had the most extraordinary response from the public – over 900 people ‘liked’ it and there were over 80 hugely positive comments. These included ‘Amazing work throughout the year’, ‘A real asset to Cromer’, ‘Deserves the utmost respect’, and ‘An absolute legend’. Letters about him were featured in the North Norfolk News and as a result his work has been recognised and rewarded by his employers. Cromer also owes Ernest a big vote of thanks for the work he does for the town. Mr Geoff Leversedge In the ten years since the opening of Merchants’ Place as a Learning and Community Resource Centre for Cromer, Geoff has been at the helm as manager. He has undertaken the role there with enthusiasm, great ability and enterpriseand has led it through

its start-up years to be a considerable community and commercial success. Thousands of organisations and their members have passed through its doors in those years. He has maintained the highest of standards in the operation of the centre, ensuring that Merchants’ Place has worked for the benefit of the full range of Cromer’s community, from the most vulnerable to the technically adventurous and capable. Cromer will want to wish him well for his retirement at the end of April and express gratitude for all that he has done for Merchants’ Place in its first ten years of operation. Mrs Jean Steward For about 20 years Mrs Steward has organised a weekly meeting in Cromer Parish Hall. This is specifically for adults with learning difficulties and their helpers (carers). The meetings are a great success. Mrs Steward is not paid for this voluntary work which takes place on a Tuesday evening. Mr Les Sadler Distinguished service and contribution to the community of staff and students at Cromer Academy. Supporting letter from Cromer Academy attached.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club

having regular trips to our landlords the NNDC and the club has seen some significant changes. New strip lighting has been installed together with new heaters and fire alarm. A new water tank has also been installed. Members are currently in the process of giving the outside of the building a facelift with new paint and staining.

Tales from the Bowling Green ...

... Hello and once again welcome to a new season at the Cromer Marrams Bowls Club. The club will open this year on the weekend of Saturday/Sunday 16/17 April. As is usual on opening days the President, Secretary, Treasurer and other committee members will be at the clubhouse on those first two days between 10am and 1pm to collect subscriptions. Cheque or cash welcome. Competition forms will also be available. The season runs through until 30 September. At the AGM Annual Subscriptions were increased to £55.00 but that figure includes entry to all club competitions which has in previous years been an additional fee. No additional rink fees are payable for ‘roll ups’, league or friendly games. We have quite a number of social members and their fee remains at £10.

The green will continue to be open for two hourly sessions from 10am every morning – the best time for a ‘roll up’ – 2pm and 6pm every day, weather permitting, and members can bowls as often as they like. Friendly games are normally played in the afternoons and spectators are always welcome. New members are always welcome and even if you have not played the game previously, don’t worry, come along and have a chat with club members who will welcome you and quite happily give you as much information as you wish. You may even want to have a try on the green. Visitors are always welcome to play on the green when it is open and not being used for a friendly or league game. A small fee may be payable. Our President this year is Bernice Billington and she is looking forward to a very happy and hopefully successful season.

Over the last few months she has been very busy

This year is the 80th Anniversary of Cromer Bowls Club formation and I am pleased to say that in July we will be playing a game against a team from our National Governing body, Bowls England, led by National President Michael Jennings.

Club and Friendlies Captain Keith Pantling is looking forward to a busy playing season, although there may be a slight reduction in the number of friendly matches. It seems that club memberships in general are getting older and less players seem to want to travel. However I am sure Keith will be well supported in all the games that have been planned.

some edges will have to be treated with care.

Over the winter the clubhouse has been open on Friday evenings and there have been a number of quiz nights, occasionally curtailed by the weather. These have been run by Edna Bunkle and Jack Purvis and I cannot say a big enough ‘thank you’ for the effort that they both put in to the evenings. Roger Purvis has also been organising the short mat bowls on Wednesday afternoon and this has been very well supported and a great friendly but competitive spirit has developed amongst the various contestants. This was highlighted recently when Janice had a birthday and a cake was shared by all. Bernice has been under the weather recently but still managed to attend most Wednesday and Friday evenings even though she sounded like Jimmy Clitheroe. You are all reminded that the clubhouse and bar will continue to be open on Friday evenings, if you wish for a ‘roll up’ to hone your skills together with a social get together in the clubhouse afterwards at very reasonable prices. Everyone welcome. Peter Bird, 01263 512120

Our Hansells League Wednesday night Captain this season is Neil Patrickson ably supported by Vice-Captain Bob Allard. We continue to have a team in the County Federation Premier (West) Division and hope that Neil Carswell will be able to continue with his successful times as the ‘Crabs’ Captain. David Mocock has taken on the role of Captain of the NANSA afternoon League team. Somewhat surprisingly to me the team were relegated at the end of last season but I am sure that David will reenergise the players and we are looking forward to a successful season. The club contractors, Willimotts, have been excellent over the winter period and have been working hard on the green and it is looking in very good condition, even though
