Honeymoon couple donate wedding money to Cromer RNLI

John and Carole Cheshire, who hail from Nottingham, were married last month after many years together. The couple, both in their seventies, had been together for many years but decided to tie the knot whilst on holiday in Venice last year.

Carole had proposed to John on three successive Leap Years but with no success, then whilst they were on a gondola last year, John popped the question.

Having both been married before and with their house furnished with all they need, they decided to ask wedding guests to give donations to the RNLI. For all your gardening & landscaping requirements throughout Norfolk

A poem was used in the wedding invitations which included the lines:

‘We support those who give their time for free

To save people in distress upon the sea The RNLI is such a worthy cause So please donate without a pause’

A donation of £300 was handed over to a representative of RNLI Cromer on Wednesday 13 April by the honeymooning couple.

Carol said ‘It was a lovely family day and we all wanted to show our support for the RNLI. Being in Cromer seemed the ideal place to donate to the RNLI’

Cromer RNLI Siren

60 Ye ar s

In the past, the firing of maroons was the signal that Cromer's lifeboat was being launched. This has now been replaced on safety grounds by an alert system using a siren, which will help clear the way for launching crews and to flag up when the boat is heading out on a shout.

The ten second siren is linked to a voice warning explaining what it means - and aims to warn public on the seafront and nearby boating traffic of an impending launch. It will only be sounded between 8am and 8pm as necessary.

For operational reasons, a test sounding will also be held on either the first or second Sunday of the month at approximately 11am (this will start on 8 May).

2484 food parcels distributed by Cromer & District Food Bank last year

Over 2484 three day emergency food supplies were provided to local people by Cromer & District foodbank in the 2015/16 financial year, compared to 2188 in 2014/15. In 2015/16 39% were children.

The top three reasons for foodbank referral were benefit delay, low income and debt.

Over the last year, local people donated 25 tonnes of food to Cromer & District Foodbank, and over 100 people volunteered. Local schools, businesses and faith groups have provided vital support to the foodbank, enabling us to give three days’ nutritionally balanced food and support to people in crisis.

As well as providing emergency food, Cromer & District foodbank provides essentials like washing powder, nappies and hygiene products to families who are struggling, as well as signposting them to other services in the local area. Cromer & District foodbank are partnering with Citizens Advice to provide additional services such as welfare advice, budgeting help and debt support at the foodbank itself, helping people to break out of crisis.

Ella King, Cromer & District Foodbank Manager, says “Behind these statistics are real people in real crisis through no fault of their own.

a good idea to book on 01263 512412!

What a lovely time of year here in Cromer, with the blossom through on the apple trees and the new herb garden flourishing under the watchful eyes of Estate Manager Nigel and Head of Herbs Ann Graveling. The chefs wander through the Orangery to harvest the fresh leaves and flowers (without stopping at the bar of course…!) and get them straight onto the plates and into the restaurant. Delicious. We are into the full swing of the season now, with very busy dining rooms throughout the week. (We’ve also retained our two AA Rosettes for the next year, which is a huge compliment for our team here). If you fancy dropping in for dinner I would be great to see you – but it’s always

CHARITY CONCERT WILL GET THE FEET TAPPING A group of three hugely talented, Norfolk-based young singer/musicians have teamed up with Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club to present an exciting charity concert in Cromer at the end of May. Led by Rebecca Hunt, accompanied by pianist Hannah Watson, together with Claire Lawrence and her band, the concert will take place in Cromer Parish Church on Monday, 30 May at 7.30pm. All three performers are highly qualified and combine a love of jazz, pop and classical music, which will result in a lively mix to suit all tastes and is sure to be a big attraction.

The programme, full details of which will be available shortly, will be two distinct halves. Rebecca Hunt, who graduated in music from Canterbury Christ Church University will sing a wide variety of popular and classical songs from Benjamin Britten, Gershwin, Puccini, Strauss and Lehar. Rebecca is in regular demand as a soloist and recitalist - her role also including opera and chorus work. Locally, she will be playing in the Imperial Vienna Orchestra’s

production at the Maddermarket Theatre, Norwich in December.

Accompanying pianist, Hannah Watson is also a music teacher and choir director working in London and Norwich. Highlights of her work include solo, chamber and song recitals at St Martin-in-theFields, The Barbican and the Royal Festival Hall.

Claire Lawrence’s selection is described as ‘infused with infectious foot-tapping jazz with a twist of pop’. It combines the 20’s era with some current hits with Ella Fitzgerald prominent. Claire is already known locally following her music scholarship at Gresham’s School where she became head chorister and then head vocalist in the department jazz band. She subsequently gained a first at York in Jazz Vocal Performance before graduating in music in 2013.

“This year’s charity concert is a compete departure from the previous organ concerts”, said Rotarian, Alan Hill. “We are very fortunate to book these young musicians and the nature of the programme has all the makings of a very lively evening. It could

Norfolk and Norwich Open Studios

For two weeks every May/June, Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios celebrate the county’s artists and their creativity by offering them the opportunity to open their doors to the public to exhibit, sell, and talk about their work. It gives visitors the chance to experience new art, meet artists, and to buy original artworks directly from their creators.

North Norfolk Organisation for the Visual Arts (NOVA) was formed in 2000 as a liaison group between the Open Studios organisation and the artists of North Norfolk, hence its title. Membership is continually rising and is currently in excess of 60 artists, covering most if not all mediums.

Cromer Sea Defence Work Comes to a Close Work to help protect Cromer from rising sea levels and potential storm damage has come to a close more than two years after it started on site in January 2014.

The £8million pound scheme, carried out by contractors VolkerStevin, was increased significantly to include repairs to the sea defences and foreshore infrastructure caused by the exceptional storm surge of December 2013.

With a pause for the summer seasons (end of April to end of September 2014 and 2015) the focus has been on ensuring Cromer Promenade, the sea defence foundations, walls and groynes are strong enough to help protect the town for future years.

Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett said “This has been a major piece of work and it’s been important to the district council to make sure that access has been maintained to the pier and the RNLI lifeboat station during the

work, and I’m pleased to say we have achieved that.

“I would like to thank the traders and businesses for their understanding throughout this work, which has been focused on protecting the town for future years.”

The groynes and parts of the sea wall date back to 1836 which although they have been regularly maintained and enhanced over the years need regular works to ensure they remain fit for purpose.

Particular care has been taken in both designing and constructing the new seawalls, many of which are listed structures. The work to maintain and refurbish the promenade and embedded artwork has improved the appearance of the promenade as well as providing a stronger surface. A smaller project to enhance the groynes will now be worked on following the completion of the major works to Cromer sea defences.

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY This is proving to be a busy time of year for the Society.

Ian Roofe spoke at our April meeting on pruning techniques, our spring show took place a day or two later, we are having a plant sale at the Community Hall in early May and on the 11th of the month Chris Branford will be speaking to us on the work of Joseph Paxton.

Pruning is an essential part of the gardening year but it is approached by many gardeners with a certain amount of trepidation. ‘Don’t be nervous’ was Ian’s advice. Pruning is essential to encourage new growth, to remove dead or diseased material and to shape plants, bushes and trees. It is important to use the right tools for the job. Shears are for shaping, secateurs will cut through soft material, loppers are just the job for larger branches and a pruning saw is essential thicker branches. As long as the tools are sharp it does not matter that much if you use something bought for a few £s at the local supermarket or really expensive secateurs costing £70 or £80. Expensive tools will usually last a lifetime though! Pruning has to be done throughout the year. Willows and cornus need to be cut back in the spring to encourage strong growth, forsythia and other spring flowering plants such as some of the viburnums need to be cut back immediately after flowering as flowers will only grow on new wood, while wisteria must be pruned in the summer. Wisdom about not pruning hebes is no longer accepted and plants can be reduced by up to two-thirds it seems without any harmful effects. Ian Roofe is an amusing and exceptionally knowledgeable speaker, as listeners to Radio Norfolk will testify. Hopefully, the tips that he gave will prevent future pruning disasters, at least that is what members went away hoping, after a very enjoyable evening.

Our spring show took place on what turned out to be the wettest and coldest Saturday of the year but in spite of this, the number of members entering the different classes was up on last year, so well done to them. Diana O’Shea won best in section for both daffodils and tulips, Jenny Pawson’s arrangement illustrating ‘Spring Sophistication’ was the best in the flower arranging section, Jennifer Andrews’ cheese and chive scones won the cookery class, Jackie Land’s collage of a beach scene was the best in the handicraft section and Derek Pardon’s stunning cyclamen was best in the section for plants other than daffodils and tulips. The weather could not detract from a generally enjoyable and successful show, although it was touch and go at times!

Many readers will be familiar with Chris Branford and the Wednesday morning talks he organises for the Cromer Society. On 11 May at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer Chris will be taking the floor himself when he gives a talk on the work of Joseph Paxton. Paxton is famous as the designer of the Crystal Palace, the centrepiece of the Great Exhibition of 1851. However, his reputation was established when he was head gardener at Chatsworth and this is what Chris will be focusing on in his talk. It should be good so please come along to hear what Chris has to say. Members free, visitors £2. Cromer Times 493 May 7th 2016

Panamania written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

Trusts have received all sorts of bad press over the last few weeks. They have become emblematic of underhand arrangements designed to deprive HM Treasury of their dues by those more than able to pay.

Let us examine some of the common misunderstandings.

• Trusts are only for the wealthy: wrong.

• Trusts are a way of concealing the true ownership : ah well, there is more than a grain of truth in this; but the purpose of setting up a trust is often primarily protective and is usually with the best intentions.

• Trusts are for avoiding tax : generally, this is not the case. Trusts have their own tax system which, put simply, often taxes them as severely as the very highest earners. If the income is paid out to beneficiaries, then usually they can claim back that higher rate tax so the income they receive is taxed at the same level as their own income.

What is certain is that trusts are complicated and the law behind them is often misunderstood or poorly grasped, including by financial journalists eager for a quick headline.

So, why create a trust, if not for nefarious reasons?

The best and most frequent reason is to leave assets, often by Will on death, to children, the young or financially-immature. This way the funds can be used to help with their upbringing or education, at the discretion of those with their best interests at heart. Often, the funds are held back until they reach not just 18 or 21 but more often 25. I have seen ‘vesting ages’ of as late as 30, where the parent or grandparent fears for the child and/or there is much growing up to be done. In the meantime, the trustees can make payments to or for the benefit of the eventual recipient.

Indeed, trusts can be a way of continuing to exercise control ‘from the grave’; but usually with kind intentions.

Trusts are also a way of making gifts to those who are vulnerable so as to be able to drip-feed funds to them throughout their life without making them ineligible for state benefits.

Trusts can be managed so that beneficiaries with drink, drug or other difficulties, which it is hoped they will in time overcome, can have the funds paid to them when they will make better use of them.

The main use of trusts in tax planning is to pass assets on, without any reservation of benefit by the giver, without losing control and without seeing the funds dissipated or otherwise misused. This means that the gift can be made sooner than otherwise and it is more likely therefore to pass tax free.

Trusts arose as a legal concept when the Crusaders left their castles to others to look after whilst they went off to the Holy Land and in case they did not come back. Trusts have an honourable English legal

tradition and must continue to do so.

KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk

Jack Smith said “I look forward to working hard with anyone, from any political persuasion, to get a Leave vote on 23 June. This is the biggest decision the British people will ever make. We’ve a clear choice, do we want to stay in the ever federalising EU, which has plans for an EU Army, police force and border force, or do we break away, make our own future and regain independence, making our own trade deals, policing our own borders and protecting our NHS?”

Why Vote Leave? To stop sending £350 million to Brussels each week, and use the money more wisely, on our priorities, such as the NHS and schools. We can truly regain control over our borders, and make the British laws and courts supreme again in this country.

Unique and beautiful cushions inspired by the Norfolk landscape to go on show

Stunning cushions inspired by some of Norfolk's most beautiful vistas will go on show at a unique exhibition later this month.

by the award-winning Young Embroiderers' group.

The event is part of a nationwide collaboration between the National Trust and the Embroiderers' Guild to mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Lancelot 'Capability' Brown, who was responsible for the design of many of the charity's most stunning gardens.

The Spirit of Felbrigg Landscape exhibition features more than 40 beautiful cushions especially created by local textile artists and stitchers from across Norfolk.

Organised by the Norwich branch of the Embroiderers' Guild, the exhibition will see the custom-made creations displayed around the famous National Trust property which inspired them.

During the exhibition, which runs from Saturday, 30 April to Wednesday 29 June some of the artists who created the cushions will also be demonstrating their skills to visitors.

On Wednesday 25 May and Sunday 12 June exhibition goers will be able to meet and see adult stitchers from the Guild in action, while on 2 June a special half-term event will be held

At Felbrigg, the gardens are thought to have been influenced by Suffolk-born and Norwicheducated Humphry Repton, who lived nearby. Repton is often regarded as the spiritual heir to Brown, and one of the last great English landscape designers. The diverse cushions produced for the exhibition reflect many aspects of the Felbrigg estate including its formal lawns and borders, its woodland, and the Grade II listed walled kitchen garden, as well as the surrounding north Norfolk landscape.

"Our members have produced dozens of unique works of art for this fantastic anniversary exhibition, and it is a real delight

for them to be shown off in the historic surroundings of Felbrigg Hall," said Embroiderers’ Guild committee member Jacqueline Goffin.

"Lush textiles have long been associated with our grand country houses, from pieces of tapestry and fabric art in their own right to impressive upholstery, curtains, and other soft furnishings.

"That tradition is well alive at Felbrigg, as shown by the recent restoration of their ornate tapestry carpet in the library, produced using replica traditional looms. There are so many techniques and styles that are intimately interwoven with a place like Felbrigg, and it is an honour for us to be a small part of that heritage."

The exhibition is open daily from 30 April to 29 June. Entry to the exhibition is included within the normal admission charges for Felbrigg Hall.

Herd of mammoths spotted in Sheringham!

Mural showcases life-sized mammoths that once roamed North Norfolk coast.

The promenade wall in Sheringham is now home to a mural depicting Neolithic life, including a herd of life-sized mammoths.

Local artist David Barber has volunteered his time to create the extraordinary tribute to the Deep History Coast with £500 funding for materials from North Norfolk District Council, in partnership with The Sheringham Society.

Cllr Becky Palmer, Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture said “The District Council is proud to have been able to fund such an impressive artwork and support David Barber in this project.

“The mural isn’t even finished yet and already it’s the talk of the town. It is a real boost to the Deep History Coast and Sheringham itself.”

The mural was inspired by the excavation in 1995 of the 700,000-yearold skeleton of the West Runton steppe mammoth.

Everything Goes!

Spring Bank Holiday Weekend, 28th - 30th May 2016 will be a busy time for The Bure Valley Railway, Norfolk’s longest narrow gauge steam railway.

The 13-foot tall skeleton is the oldest ever found in the UK and the largest nearlycomplete mammoth skeleton known. The mural project includes education outreach so school children can take part in painting sessions. In addition, there will be talks about the Deep History Coast sharing information on the local ancient environment and prehistory of Britain.

The workshop at Aylsham will be open throughout the weekend and staff will be on hand to answer any questions. Andrew Barnes, Director, says “this event will give railway enthusiasts and families alike a chance to see a collection of some of the world’s most powerful 15-inch gauge steam engines on display and in operation. This will also be the first time that the new platform at Wroxham will see intensive use with two trains in Wroxham simultaneously.”

Trains will be running from both Aylsham and Wroxham and fares allow unlimited travel on the day of issue. Children under 5 travel free.

In addition, the restored Wroxham Signal Box will open to visitors at Wroxham Station, providing unparalleled views of the comings and goings of both the Bure Valley and mainline railway.

Steam Trains to the Norfolk Broads GO R 5’S UNDE

All available engines, coaches and rolling stock will be action. There will be a special intensive timetable in operation throughout the weekend to allow visitors the opportunity to see as many different locomotives as possible hard at work over the nine miles between Aylsham and Wroxham. To keep younger visitors entertained there will a competition on the train journey, with a free prize for every correct entry.

VACANCIES Elite Care are based in Cromer and we have both Full-time and Part-time vacancies for domiciliary support workers to join our growing team.

This is not an easy job but it is an extremely rewarding role undertaking the support of vulnerable adults within the community. This involves every aspect of their needs - personal care, emotional support, companionship, shopping, assistance with eating, medication etc. You must be a dedicated individual and genuinely want to do the work, it is not a light hearted undertaking. The work varies from a day’s worth of pop-in visits, to longer sits, to live in and night sits.

A car is essential, we cover much of North Norfolk. Experience is preferred, but we would give full training to the right individual. Persons with criminal records cannot be accepted. Hours available can be as few as 8, or 40 or more. Contact Tee on 07591 686812 Mon to Fri 9am to 4pm or send an email telling us about yourself to tee@theecccltd.com

our hand-picked staff are properly supported with training and mentoring centrally. Our objective is to provide the kind of care that is delivered with empathy for those we serve, supporting independence, respecting individuality and privacy. It is for that reason we have never undertaken 15 minute visits; we view them as worthless; 15 minutes is simply not enough time to fulfil any task efficiently. Above all we listen and pay attention to detail, we ask ourselves how would we want to be treated in your shoes." Tee continued, "Our staff love the new premises with nice kitchen at the back - it's so much more comfortable, staff are able to pop in during the day and have a break, they are already using the training room for study sessions. Our clients will also feel more comfortable in the spacious reception area. The recent ‘Open Day’ proved a huge success and Tee has resolved to make this an annual event. “It has been lovely to welcome service users back since the Open Day day who simply called in for a cup of tea” she said. Elite Care was formed to fill a perceived gap in the Home Care sector, Tee, the Registered Manager, had difficulty in securing the kind of care she wanted for her mother, a Dementia sufferer. "As a growing enthusiastic team we aim to serve as your competent, enthusiastic and reliable care team. Our staff will always accommodate your needs with professional, attentive service, the focus will be on your abilities rather than something you cannot do. We are registered with the Care Quality commission and all our staff are DBS checked and undertake mandatory training including the New Care Certificate." "Come in and have a cup of tea soon."

Our lovely Harvey gave us some cause for concern recently as he had a nasty tummy upset and was very quiet, not his normal self. He was not coming to the front of his pen for a fuss when his carers arrive, which was very unusual. As he was in such poor condition when he arrived this is not really surprising, so a visit to the vets was needed to get his recovery back on track. He had a scan to rule out any underlying problems and thankfully nothing was found. He is now on medication and is such a good boy as he regards his tablets as a treat so they quickly disappear. Chicken and fish meals have been offered to him, and although he liked the fish, it is evident that he prefers chicken. The pregnant cat has also provided us with a few challenges as she did not produce her kittens until over two weeks after her arrival and during the last week she became aggressive towards Cowie, came into care with three companions her carers when they went to clean the housing unit. Although very big she finally had two very tiny kittens. Unfortunately, she rejected the kittens and did not feed them. Sadly one died soon after birth and despite hand rearing the other one, we lost it too. As she was still aggressive at this stage, it was decided the best course of action was to get her neutered and blood tested straight away. Thankfully, the blood test was negative and since her operation she has once again become a friendly little cat. It is fortunate that she came into care as there were children in her previous home and they could have

Hats of all shapes, colours and styles festooned the front display table of the April meeting -from vintage satin and velvet to very modern hats made from a material made from banana leaves. They had all been brought by our speaker, Margaret Sims from Horsford. Margaret started her business of hiring hats for all occasions with 100 hats. She now has over 1,000.

Margaret spoke about how the milliners’ trade had changed through the years and she showed members how other accessories, such as bags and pashminas, could also be worn to compliment an outfit.

To the delight of most and surprise of a few, Margaret chose hats for members to model, suiting their head shape, colouring and size.

The talk was inspirational, with some members remarking during tea that they would now feel more inclined to wear a hat the next time there was an occasion to do so.

Birthday posies were presented to Pat Ward, Sue Stoneman and Sheila Fletcher.

The competition for ‘something beginning with C’ was won by Liz Holhouse with her Chinese figure. Second was Caroline Yarwood and third place was Eileen Tucker.

Our president welcomed three visitors and one new member to this meeting.

Our May meeting will be held as usual in the Community Hall, Garden Street on the second Thursday at 2pm, with visitors welcome. During the meeting the two proposed resolutions for debate at the WI annual National Conference in Brighton will be discussed.

The Strand Club

We welcomed 23 members and three guests to our April meeting. As our Secretary and Treasurer were both poorly, Jean stepped in to help Jackie our Chairman and together they did all three jobs!

A card was sent round for members to convey their good wishes to Josie who has just had a bionic shoulder fitted. Members were asked if they would wear red white and blue to our spring lunch next month to celebrate our Queen's 90th birthday. Jackie has agreed to represent the Strand Club by doing a floral display in St. Martin's church for their festival of flowers and memorabilia on 11/12 June.

We then welcomed our speaker, Rosamund Weatherall from Blickling textile conservation department. The variety of items that are renovated and repaired are amazing, from embroidered lampshades from Northern Ireland, 18th century silk damask wall coverings at Felbrigg to a 17th century whole bedroom suite including state bed, curtains, stools, chairs etc., which is in Knole, Kent. The renovation of this Charles II bed was started in 2002 and is still ongoing. They also have 30,000 items of costume and 6 metre high tapestries that are first sent to De Wit workshops in Belgium to be washed before repair can begin.

All this information and amazing pictures can't fail to whet the appetite and we are fortunate to be able to see some of these works in progress on our annual outing this year on 8 June. Anyone interested in going on this trip should ring Glo on 01263 576539 to book a place as tickets are going fast!

Carol won a basket of fruit on the raffle and Jenny L won a reed diffuser. Thank you to Pam and Eileen for making our teas for us. The meeting was closed a little late at 4.10pm and members were given a picture of a medieval frieze to take home to colour in ready for next month for judging.

Guests are always welcome at our meetings. For more information ring Chris on 01263 579433 or Glo on 01263 576539.

SUMMER ACTOR HAS NURSING CAREER IN WINGS TOO A young actor is learning nursing skills as well as lines as he prepares for a summer drama season in his native Norfolk. Ryan Starling is taking two roles in the Rep programme at Sheringham Little Theatre. But he is also studying a nursing degree to help bolster his finances, and “do something worthwhile,” during the spells between acting jobs, so the 24-year-old from North Walsham has been appearing in operating theatres as well as community arts theatres as he pursues his twin careers.

Ryan explained “It is difficult to support yourself financially as an actor. Some people do bar and restaurant work, but I wanted to do something useful which also gave me the flexibility to put acting first.”

He is in the first year of a three year adult nursing degree course at the University of East Anglia which has also seen him gaining experience in operating theatres and community hospitals. He aims to be a ‘bank nurse’ - picking up stand-by hospital work when he is free, but also able to head off to auditions at the drop of a hat. This summer Ryan will play Peter, one of the Railway Children in the classic adventure story, which is one of the Sheringham venue’s fivestrong summer drama line-up. He is also Tristram in the Alan Ayckbourn farce Taking Steps.

It will be Ryan’s third season at the theatre, whose youth outreach work has helped him forge his acting career.

Ryan was born and raised in North Walsham

where dad Keith Starling is an electrical engineer and mum Diane a secretary at the junior school.

life,” he said.

Sheringham Little Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “We are pleased and proud that our outreach work helped Ryan towards his chosen career – and delighted to showcase his skills again in our summer season. “It can be tough for young actors and Ryan has shown a lot of maturity by adding nursing skills to help him provide finances while he furthers his dream.”

He first took to the stage at North Walsham High School, where he loved drama lessons and took the lead role in Macbeth. He joined the Sheringham Little Theatre’s outreach group, and went on to help run sessions for them. Ryan also got involved with productions at Paston Sixth Form College and its Far East Theatre Company before heading to the Rose Bruford Drama School in Kent.

His first job as a newly-qualified professional actor was back at the Sheringham theatre as schoolboy Salty in Teechers during the 2013 summer season when he also appeared in the farce Tom Dick and Harry. Ryan returned in 2014 for parts in Neville’s Island, Irma Vep, and Kiss of Death.

Ryan stressed that although he is working hard towards his nursing degree, drama remained his main goal and love.

“Acting is the main thing and always will be. It is just a case of there being no guarantees and I don’t want to end up struggling for money all my

JOIn RYAn In THE CAST A trio of volunteer actors are being sought to join the cast of the Railway Children. The professional production is looking for two females and a male to bolster the team by playing a variety of roles.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: "The roles are voluntary and would suit experienced actors who would like the opportunity to work in a professional environment. It could be a competent amateur from a community drama group, or a young person on a gap year before going to drama school." The roles are a big commitment, with rehearsals in August and shows running from August 10-16 (7.30pm daily and matinees on the 11 and 13). Specific requirements are: • One female aged 40 plus to play various characters • One female aged 18-30 with roles including a child • A male aged 18-30 playing a variety of roles including a child.

Auditions are on May 8 at Sheringham Little Theatre from 11am to 1pm. Applicants are asked to email a brief resume in advance to debbie@sheringhamlittletheatre.com

The guide helps readers to understand their options, highlights where to go for advice and gives information on how the paying for care system works.

With no cap on care costs at present, this independent information is invaluable to help navigate the system.

The new edition of the Norfolk Guide to Care and Support for Adults and accompanying website give information on all aspects of arranging care and support in Norfolk. It includes how to stay independent for as long as possible, the different care and support options available and what to look for when choosing a care provider. It also offers guidance on

Evolution of dermal fillers

- do we now have something that delays ageing?

• • • • • • • • • •

Dermal filler treatments are non-surgical treatments Fillers can soften lines and wrinkles Fillers can be used to restore lost facial volume Fillers can be used to provide a three-dimensional facelift New research shows they can hold back years There are more than 200 fillers in use, not all are safe Most experts recommend avoiding permanent fillers Improper use can cause problems Treatments are largely unregulated so choose your practitioner wisely At the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic we specialise in providing a natural look and work hard to provide a safe and comfortable treatment.

Restylane range of dermal fillers has been used for 20 years and 28 million treatments have been carried out worldwide.

Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM, Medical Director at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic says “they come and they go, but Restylane has stood the test of time. It is not that we shy away from new treatments. For those of you who know us-we have invested heavily in new technology and have 18 state-of-the-art lasers and light devices.

Dr Gheyi has personally carried out thousands of Restylane treatments over the last ten years and it works, is very cost effective and it lasts longer than many other products on the market.

“When we first started doing dermal filler treatments the emphasis was on filling lines and wrinkles, I saw with interest as gradually we began to understand how our face ages and deflate with time. So the focus shifted to replacing lost volume. We moved from filling lines and wrinkles to adding volume. We also knew that in addition to loss of volume, gravity takes its toll and face begins to sag. We never thought that using fillers could fight gravity-un till new research came out just now that shows it is possible. We now have evidence that using hyaluronic acid dermal fillers strengthens the deeper layer of the face. This firms up deeper tissue, which resists gravitational descent. We can say with confidence that use of our treatments can delay ageing.

What are the risks? In general these are safe treatments when performed by reputable and experienced doctors. This area is however largely unregulated so choose wisely. Although there are many voluntary regulators, the only legitimate regulator of health care in England is Care Quality

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club

morning for the rest of the week. Overall the weather was good for us. Now on the Saturday we had a Spoon Drive. I said in the last issue that it was to be at 2pm because that is what it said in our fixture list. However Captain Keith decided that a morning start would be better. So if anybody turned up to support the players I apologize for the mix up.

Tales from the Bowling Green ...

… and we have to clear up the details of our winter quizzes. Jack arrived in his best regalia which he proposed should be worn when playing bowls for the following season. I do not think the suggestion will be taken up. He then presented the last quiz of the season and Edna, who had provided crisps and chocolates on the tables for us all, announced the overall winners for the winter season as Peter Bird, Sally Tipple, Keith Pantling and John Blackburn. Congratulations to all and a great thank you to Jack and Edna for all the questions.

Opening day was very wet up till lunch time and no one managed to get onto the green. However the next day, despite a cool wind, the green was well populated and indeed continued to be so each

During the morning ‘roll ups’ I have to declare that the first ‘wrong bias’ of the season was seen to be delivered by President Bernice. She was unfortunate as I happened to be playing on the same rink so she couldn’t get away with that.

COME AND TRY CROQUET

It’s Spring! The ideal time to learn how to play croquet – or to take it up again if you have played it before. Bodham Croquet Club – tucked up the corner of Bodham playing field – is providing instruction and an opportunity to try out this fascinating game on each Wednesday afternoon during May, June and July.

Croquet comes in many different forms. However, there are two’official’ forms of the game, each played to international level ‘Association Croquet’ and ‘Golf Croquet’. Both forms have a handicap system permitting balanced games between people of different ability. They also use the same equipment (mallets and hoops) and the same lawn, but the two forms have very different natures and can be attractive to people with different personalities.

‘Association’ has ancient roots. For the game as we know it, the first set of official rules was

The final part of our redecoration/renovation took place in the week before we opened and that was a new toilet floor. Yes that may not seem too awe inspiring or necessarily a thing to write

about but I have to say the finish is excellent, and almost worth coming to visit us just to see it!

No games played just yet so not sure how the teams will perform this year but we are all looking forward to getting into competitive spirit and being as successful as possible. However as from this weekend we start with a steady number of fixtures so as always your support and interest would be welcome.

I list below our forthcoming ‘Home’ fixtures that you may wish to come along, watch and enjoy. Wednesday 4 May 6.30pm Cawston: NBA County League game Friday 6 May 2pm Sheringham Morley Panthers: NANSA League game Sunday 8 May 2pm CMB BC: Mixed triples games Tuesday 10 May 6.45pm Wootton Park: Federation County League game Friday 13 May 2pm Narborough BC, Leicester: Rinks game Friday 20 May 2pm Erpingham: NANSA League game Sunday 22 May 2pm Kings Lynn BC: Mixed Rinks game

defined in the 1860s, the heyday of the game, particularly favoured by ladies looking for partners. A form of croquet with a high strategic element, ‘Association’ can be likened to snooker - the person in play on the lawn, by obtaining extra shots, can build up ‘breaks’ and go through several (or many) hoops in his turn. When no more progress is possible the opponent can then be left in an almost impossible position!

‘Golf’ croquet, on the other hand, is much more of a sociable game. All players congregate together on the lawn and take it in turns to have one hit at their ball. Technically, however, it can be as skilful as ‘Association’. It is a much newer game than ‘Association’ but has grown enormously in popularity in the last two decades.

Both forms of the game are played at Bodham grass/dirt tracks. Meet at the Gresham Village Hall Car Park (free), East Beckham Lane, Gresham, NR11 8RT.

Tues 24 May – 11am - West Runton Golf Course Views Walk – Grade 2 – Approx. 2 miles

– A mixture of pavement, tracks and grass with gentle gradients. Meet at The Village Inn PH Car park, West Runton, NR27 9QT.

and will be covered in the Wednesday afternoon sessions. Anyone interested should turn up for a 2pm start, wearing softish shoes. Attendance for the first three sessions is absolutely free and all equipment will be provided. For more information call Barry on 01263 715878.

to steep gradients on heath, woodland, grass, dirt and pavement. Meet at Priory Maze and Gardens Car Park, Cromer Rd, Sheringham, NR26 8SF.
