Cromer Ladies Lifeboat Guild AGM & Special Awards Continued from front cover...

For several years, Peggy and Tony hosted summer garden fetes at their home, enabling the Guild to raise further funds for the RNLI. Although Peggy is now stepping down from her role on the Committee, she continues to be a member of the Ladies Lifeboat Guild.

Tony has been an active member of the Cromer RNLI Station Crew for many years and became the Station Chairman in 1978. He has worked tirelessly to ensure the successful operation of the Cromer Lifeboat, as well as supporting the efforts of the Ladies Guild.

As well as celebrating their golden awards, earlier this year Peggy and Tony also celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations were given and they were wished many more happy years together.

The presentation ceremony was introduced by Mr John Davies, Cromer RNLI Coxswain and the presentation of an engraved bowl, flowers and certificates was made by Mrs Beryl Mansell, Chairman of the Ladies Lifeboat Guild. After thanking the Guild and the Crew for their support and camaraderie, Peggy invited everyone to help her and Tony celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary with wine and canapes.

Cromer Ladies Lifeboat Guild continues to go from strength to strength. It was reported that the Guild had raised a total of £15,508.00 this year – the highest fundraising amount raised to date! Many thanks were given to the hard work and dedication of both the Committee and Guild members and also many thanks were expressed to the members of the public who continue to support this important cause.

For anyone interested in joining the Guild and for further information about forthcoming events, please go to www.cromerrnli.org.uk and follow the link to the Ladies Guild pages.

CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS – REVIEW

Jane Lindsay (Cello) and Jennifer Hughes (Piano), Templewood, Northrepps

In their aim to bring to Templewood artists of extremely high standards, Cromer Music Evenings again succeeded in engaging, for the second time, two performers of top quality, maintaining the standards which the audiences at Templewood have, over the years, come to expect.

Beethoven's Horn Sonata in F major Op 17 written in 1800, transcribed for piano and cello, immediately stamped upon the listener the masterful authority of which these two artists were capable, with its opening bars, boisterous in execution, creating an overall feeling of exciting splendour, as the music progressed through to the minor key in the poco adagio and back to the major in the rondo allegro molto.

The Bruch Kol Nidrei, originally written for the valveless French horn, only started to sell after being transcribed for cello and piano! This piece, based on two old English folk melodies enhanced by the depth of timbre from the cello, filled the room with a warmth and emotion made possible by the command Lindsay has over the instrument, made in England by Peter Walsmley in 1746.

Mendelssohn's Variations Concertantes Op 17 written in 1829 involved many diverse textures and sonorous sounds of the cello, with tempo ranging from andante con moto to presto agitato, ably managed by the two performers with visual and technical ease.

Sonata in F major Op 6 by Richard Strauss written in 1883 when only 17 years old, in three movements, brought to an end an exhilarating performance from these two highly talented musicians who have, without doubt, the performance abilities to go far in their musical careers. Terry Keeler

Where are the carers?

We read of people not receiving adequate care in the community, leaving the onus on personal carers who, like I have experienced, find themselves under pressure, trying to cope - day to day - without support.

Here is the good news - Excel 2000 offers 10 free sessions helping carers to relax and deal with difficulties of their situation.

Now is the time to grasp this opportunity. Ring 07769 588541

North Norfolk District Council hosts new exhibition inspired by Norfolk’s farming heritage

NNDC’s public art gallery is presenting a visually bold new exhibition ‘Back to the Barn’ by local artist Catherine Hall.

The exhibition, running from 3 May to 12 July, reflects Catherine’s upbringing on her family’s Norfolk livestock farm surrounded by animals, woodland and fields. Her accessible and warm representation of farm animals against bright block-colour backgrounds brings modernity to a traditional subject. Aylmerton resident Catherine said “‘Back to the Barn’ is extremely meaningful to me in so many ways - looking back on where I've come from and taking in all the beauty we've taken for granted around us and bringing it out on canvas. I love watching the characters emerge and recreating their personalities.” NNDC seeks to offer free opportunities to local artists to display their work in the 1st Floor Gallery in the Council’s Holt Road offices in Cromer. Currently six exhibitions are held annually. Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said “It’s great to be able to offer artists a space to exhibit their works for the public to appreciate. ‘Back to the Barn’ is a super collection of paintings and prints and we are pleased to be able to host them.” The NNDC Gallery is open to the public on Mon, Tues and Thurs 8.30am – 5pm, Wednesday 10am – 5pm and Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm. 8

Do you have a Will or Lasting Power of Attorney?

A Will is a legal document which sets out your last wishes by allowing you to choose who receives your belongings and assets after you die. It is essential for you to make a Will whether or not you consider you have any possessions, or much money. If you do not have a Will when you die, then the Government decides under the Intestacy Rules how your money, property, or possessions are divided. If you are living with a partner and not married, then if you die without a Will your partner cannot inherit any part of your Estate.

A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows you to appoint a friend or family member who you trust to make decisions in respect of your finances, property, or health if you are unable to, for example, if you are in an accident, lose mental capacity, etc. If you do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney and lose mental capacity, for whatever reason, then it may put your family in a difficult financial position by not being able to access your finances or able to deal with your property.

CHARITY CONCERT PROGRAMME ANNOUNCED

The full programme has been announced for the charity concert hosted by Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club on Monday, 30 May. The concert will take place in Cromer Parish church at 7.30pm.

Rebecca Hunt

Talented soprano, Rebecca Hunt, backed up by pianist Hannah Watson, will take the first half of the concert, performing a variety of popular and classical songs. These include four Britten folk songs - The Last Rose of Summer, The Ash Grove, Down by the Sally Gardens and O Waly Waly. These will be balanced by the classical songs O Mio Babbino by Puccini, Mein Herr Marquis from Strauss and Lehar’s Vilja. Again ringing the changes, will be the traditional folk Heather Watson songs Danny Boy, She Moved Through The Fair, A Spring Of Thyme and I will Walk with my Love. To finish will be Gershwin’s Summertime, A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square and I Could’ve Danced All Night.

Taking ‘centre stage’ after the interval will be Claire Lawrence and her band. She will concentrate mainly on jazz standards and ‘classy pop classics’.

Most of Claire’s 12 pieces will be sung accompanied by her band and include three from Ella Fitzgerald - How High the Moon, Bewitched and Don’t Mean a Thing. Other catchy tunes that will have the audience swaying are Let’s Fall in Love, I’m Not the Only One, Moaning, I Believe in a Thing Called Love, Blank Space and Love Yourself. Piano and vocal pieces alone include Imagine, Wings and the everpopular Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The combination of 20s era and current hits should provide a feel-good and exciting second half.

Claire Lawrence

Tickets at £7.50 are now available from outlets including the Tourist Office in Cromer, Randalls Electrical and K Hardware both on Church Street in Cromer and on the door on the night.

Thanks from Songbird Survival Eddie and Lynn from Songbird Survival would like to thank all the people who have given items for their sales.

Money raised is reaching £15,000, which will be used to fund research into why we are losing so many birds.

North Walsham’s chippy has again been judged one of the top four

Cromer VEO Annual Art & Craft Exhibition

The annual competition, which is run by Fry Magazine, entails an unannounced secret visit by an independent judge who marks each shop on the quality of their food and the service received. Over 50 different aspects of the food and customer service are marked to help, compare shops throughout the UK.

Opening times will be daily 10.30am – 5.30pm Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday, 1.30pm – 5.30pm on Sunday and 10.30am – 5pm on Wednesday.

The THREE COTTAGES FISH RESTAURANT has received the amazing news that in this year’s competition to find the best 50 Fish and Chip Shops in the United Kingdom they were once again one of only four shops to receive a mark of 100% from the independent judges. We were immensely proud of all our staff when they achieved this distinction in 2015 but to repeat the result in the 2016 competition is almost unbelievable.

Sam Homfray,Chris Lloyd, Caroline Middleton, Kirstie Anderson(front) & Sophie Babbs

At the Three Cottages the aim has always been to try and serve “the best fish and chips in the world”. A mark of 100% for the quality of the food for the fourth year running reflects their efforts to achieve this.

Owners, Sam Homfray and Paula and David Audley told us “It is impossible to explain how gratifying it is to receive this fantastic result for a second year. The immense efforts put in by all our staff to ensure the highest standards of food and service are enjoyed by all our customers has earnt them all this fantastic recognition.”

Ten get Ten out of Ten - North Norfolk Photographic Society

One of the highlights of a camera club’s year is its ‘annual competition. In the case of North Norfolk Photographic Society, this now results in four competitions, one each for Novices and Advanced members in each of two categories, prints and digital projected pictures.

the Photographic Association of Great Britain, his role being to promote distinctions around East Anglia.

The Novice section attracted 25 entries from 10 members and was won by Grace Glaister with ‘Chilly in Cromer’, a photograph On 4 May, the projected images were of Cromer pier on a chilly day, judged by Vic Hainsworth. ‘Because I’m a (published and proud of it) poet I would say the historical romance is full of rich language and adventures set around Cromer Town and the London Docks back in 1870. I like to think of my characters as intriguing, they have a few hang-ups which may be murderous or simply unrealistic, but my main concept was originally a good old romance with a happy ending. The characters took off by themselves and created their ‘own place’ in the novel. I wrote the first draft of the novel some years ago, but the main storyline is the same. With access to the internet, Cromer Lifeboat Museum and Cromer Museum a whole new historical world became available to me, though much of the historical background and idea came from the tomes which used to be in Cromer library back in the 80s.’

PRIORY MAZE AND GARDENS

The Overstrand Gardening Club held its monthly meeting on Tuesday 3 May. The speaker was Shelagh Ashe, the illustrated talk was called ‘Gertrude Jekyll The Legendary Gardener’.

Gertrude Jekyll is known for being a celebrated horticulturist, garden designer, artist and writer of books and articles for magazines.

Open 10 am - 5 pm

One of the most natural enchanting gardens in Norfolk, where you can experience peaceful relaxation in gardens ofwoodland, water and meadow.

She is also remembered for her association with the Art and Crafts movement and her work with the famous architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. The talk highlighted that she showed great attention to the colour schemes of her gardens, with plants in drifts. Her gardens showed her artistic talent for colour and the choice of various textures, and also her plantsmanship, artistry and philosophy.

The talk gave a wonderful insight into this renowned lady, and was very well received, and showed that Gertrude Jekyll was, and is, a true inspiration to gardeners.

Our talk next month is on Tuesday 7 June and is called ‘Norfolk Saffron It’s Cultivation and Use’. The speaker is Dr Sally Francis. The meeting starts at 2.30pm at Overstrand Parish Hall, The Londs.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, our demonstrator for April had to cancel so we had a complete DIY evening. We were asked to take flowers and foliage so we were prepared to ‘do something’.

While Chairman Jill Breeze did a basket arrangement using spring flowers, members and visitors arranged their flowers in a chosen container and, after a coffee break, Margaret Mitchel produced a modern arrangement using pink roses and phormiums.

All the designs were wonderful and we had a pleasant social evening. Visitors are always welcome to attend our meetings.

A new service from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER www.norfolklandscapegardeners.co.uk

RHODODENDRONS AND AZALEAS In North Norfolk we are fortunate to have some of the finest displays of rhododendrons and azaleas in the country.

During May and early June it is worth visiting local gardens and estates such as Sheringham Park and Stody Lodge to see these most beautiful of shrubs.

Stody Lodge, near Edgefield, has what is believed to be the largest single planting of vividly-coloured azalea mollis in England. As many of the large varieties take from 10 to 40 years to reach maturity, we must be grateful to the people who caught the ‘rhododendron bug’ many years ago and planted for our enjoyment today.

You can look to the rhododendron genus (which includes all the azaleas) for special interest in tree form, bark colour and texture, leaf colour, flowers in all shapes and colours and last, and not least scent.

None of us can compete with these grand estates and provide such magnificent woodland settings but it is possible to grow rhododendrons at home. The ideal conditions are an acid soil which is preferably light and if peaty so much the better. Full use should be made of fallen deciduous leaves to improve the soil by massing them round the rhododendrons as a thick mulch. This has the effect of keeping the plant’s roots shallow roots cool and moist right through the summer. If your soil is too chalky, it is possible to grow compact varieties in containers.

The Royal Horticultural Society offers the following advice to amateur gardeners for successful cultivation of rhododendrons and azaleas

• choose a site with dappled shade in sheltered conditions. Avoid deep Cromer Times 494 May 21st 2016

shade beneath other trees and shelter from cold, dry winds. Dwarf alpine species will tolerate full sun providing the soil does not dry out. Avoid frost pockets and sites exposed to the morning sun. • before planting, dig in plenty of neutral or acidic organic matter: composted tree bark, leaf mould, decomposing pine or spruce needles, or composted Do not plant deeply – all For allchopped your bracken. gardening & too landscaping rhododendrons are surface-rooting and the roots should be just covered. requirements throughout • rhododendrons are more difficult to grow in areasNorfolk of low rainfall. Tap water often contains too much calcium and it is preferable to use rain water. In spring apply an ericaceous fertiliser. • if planting in containersuntil use John a similar ericaceous loam MayInnes 31stor2016 based compost. The RHS recommends re-potting every other year into fresh compost. • rhododendrons do not require much pruning other than the removal of dead wood and deadheading of sent flowers if practical. • problems can include leaf drop in cold weather, vine weevil in container grown plants and nutrient deficiencies which cause the leaves to yellow.

New ‘Bathing Water’ designation for West Runton Defra decision follows NNDC request and formal consultations

West Runton beach has been officially designated as a ‘bathing water’, a key step on the way to winning sought-after Blue Flag status.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) recently announced that West Runton has successfully passed the tests to achieve the designation.

Beaches, and inland lakes that attract a large number of bathers, can be designated as bathing waters under the Bathing Water Directive. Water quality at bathing waters is tested during the bathing season, which in England runs from 15 May to 30 September.

Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Leisure, said “The district is very proud of its four Blue Flag beaches at Cromer, Sheringham, Sea Palling and Mundesley.

“The Blue Flag status helps both visitors and locals understand how clean a beach and its waters are, as well as the high quality of facilities provided. It is something that is recognised worldwide.

“Bathing water designation is one of the crucial steps on the way to winning Seaside Award status, and then Blue Flag status.”

services, a café by the gangway and other food outlets and shops in the village. It also has a voluntary beach warden and a dog free area between May 1 and 30 September.

Possible person in sea results in launch of Lifeboat

A call was made to HM Coastguard at 16.50 on Saturday 7 May regarding a person in the water.

A possible sighting of a person in the water off the pier had been made by a member of the public just after 16.30.The request to launch the inshore lifeboat was made and by 17.07 it was in the water and searching the area around the pier.

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, ward member for the Runtons, said “This is fantastic news for local people, local business and visitors. The quality of the beach warrants the designation, both in terms of its beautiful visual appeal and in terms of its history. We have coachloads of young people coming here on regular occasions to learn about the West Runton Mammoth, the chalk reef and the Cromer Forest Bed.”

Nothing was found and after discussions with the police and coastguard the search was called off. The crew and boat returned to the station at 17.30 and it was cleaned down and made ready for its next call out by 17.40.

West Runton has RNLI Lifeguards operating from July to September, public toilets at the bottom of the gangway, car parking, bus and rail

A very interesting and amusing hour was spent listening to the diverse stories that painted the picture of a Harbour Masters job.

The application for the designation was formally made by North Norfolk District Council following a local consultation. Defra ran its own consultation which was completed in March.

Overstrand WI

Continuing the nautical theme following on from the visit from Coast Watch in March, members welcomed Robert Smith, Harbour Master at Wells to the April meeting.

There has been a port there since the 9th century when it was a Danish settlement. Records are in existence from the 12th century, and tell of the harbour being behind the town and of how smuggling was big business and how, very macabrely, the Wells men were known as ‘Bite Fingers’, because of the way they harvested the rings on the hands of bodies washed up from ship wrecks. They bit the fingers off!

The records are a fascinating and sometimes shocking look into the history of Wells. Times have changed, whereas it was a full scale port and the hub of the town in the 1600s, it is now mainly for the fishing fleets, for supply vessels for the wind farm industry and recreational craft. Members were asked to look out their Royal memorabilia to contribute to the Queen`s 90th birthday celebration at St Martin’s Church Overstrand in June.

We welcome visitors and prospective new members (you don`t have to be an Overstrand resident to join us) to our walks and monthly meetings. Our meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand.

RNLI 10th Anniversary Patrol

RNLI lifeguard service in partnership with North Norfolk District Council returns for 10th anniversary season patrolling Norfolk beaches The RNLI, the charity that saves lives at sea, first teamed up with North Norfolk District Council in 2007 to provide beach patrols at Cromer, Sheringham, Mundesley and Sea Palling.

A decade later the service has expanded along the East Anglia coast to 16 beaches, including at West Runton (new for this year), East Runton and Wells in North Norfolk, as well as beaches in the Great Yarmouth area and Suffolk.

Four veteran RNLI lifeguards have been ever present since that first day 10 years ago Vincent Pank, Sam Kendrick, Scott Davidson and Chris Wall.

Vincent, who has risen through the ranks to become Lifeguard Manager, said ‘We were breaking new ground when we took on the lifeguard service for North Norfolk District Council in 2007, as it was the first time RNLI lifeguards had patrolled anywhere on the east coast of the UK.

‘It’s been an incredible 10 years since then, saving lives and keeping people safe. We have gone from having 15 lifeguards patrolling a handful of beaches to employing around 65 people at 16 locations along the length of the Norfolk coast and into Suffolk.

‘So much has happened throughout the past decade, but most rewarding for me is seeing how our presence and reputation has grown within the communities we work in. I think we were seen as a novelty at the start, but we’ve earned the trust and respect of people who now seek out our advice, whether that is the public, lifeboat crews, emergency services or landowners.’

Leader of North Norfolk District Council Cllr Tom FitzPatrick said ‘We’re proud of what has been achieved in partnership with the RNLI over the past 10 years.

‘Ensuring the safety of our beaches is paramount and having lifeguards on duty when North Norfolk is at its busiest means visitors and residents can have peace of mind

Cromer Times 494 May 21st 2016

while enjoying our beautiful coastline.

‘The lifeguards are a skilled team and our admiration and thanks go to all of them for their dedication and bravery over the past decade.’

Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said ‘Our beaches, four of which have Blue Flag status, are enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people each year. The hard work of the RNLI lifeguards has kept these people safe.’

The wages for RNLI lifeguards along the North Norfolk coast at Cromer, Sea Palling, Sheringham, Mundesley are funded by NNDC, with training, equipment, lifeguard stations, vehicles, support services and management all provided by the RNLI.

Within the NNDC purvey there are three permanent lifeguard units at Wells, Sea Palling and Sheringham West. Temporary units have been installed at Sheringham East, West Runton, East Runton, Cromer West, Cromer East and Mundesley. They will be taken down in September.

Since 2010* RNLI lifeguards in East Anglia have saved 18 lives, rescued 177 people and given medical care 4,001 times.

RNLI lifeguards resumed patrols of five beaches in Norfolk on Saturday 7 May (Sheringham West, Cromer East, Mundesley, Sea Palling and Gorleston) and two in Suffolk on 21 May (Lowestoft South and Southwold North).

Front row L-R Cabinet Member for Leisure Cllr Becky Palmer, Cllr Judy Oliver (Sheringham South), NNDC Leader Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Cabinet Member for Coastal Management Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Cllr Nigel Pearce (Suffield Park), Cllr Sarah Butikofer (West Runton). getting a job as an RnLI beach lifeguard can contact Vincent at Vincent_pank@rnli.org.uk or give him a call on 07917 581567.

* The RNLI changed the way it recorded lifeguard statistics in 2010. Statistics are not available for previous years.

A further nine beaches will be patrolled from Saturday 2 July. These are Wells, Sheringham East, West Runton, East Runton, Cromer West, Hemsby, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft North and Southwold South. Anyone interested in

Way Forward for Cabbell Park

The symbolic home of Cromer Town Football Club could remain at Cabbell Park alongside a £3.5 million pound medical centre for a three year period.

In a deal put forward by landowners North Norfolk District Council and MedCentres the football clubhouse could temporarily remain on the site giving time for a new sports facility, on the edge of Cromer to be developed. The proposals would mean the Cromer Town Football Club can continue to raise funds to support the ongoing operation of the club through the use of the clubhouse.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “The proposal has developed as a direct result of the conversations we have been having with MedCentres. Initially we wanted to see if the clubhouse could be used by the construction company and I’m delighted that this way forward has been found.”

Under the arrangement the district council as landowners would sell the land at the front of Cabbell Park to MedCentres, arrange to lease

the clubhouse back and sub-let it to Cromer Town Football Club for a 3 year period, if the planning application is successful.

Cllr FitzPatrick added “The District Council has always had the best interests of the people of Cromer at heart. We know that Cromer desperately needs a new medical centre. We also know that finding a suitable location is challenging – that’s why we have worked so hard to find a solution. We want to provide better facilities for people’s health and wellbeing in a way that meets the original bequest of Mrs Bond Cabbell, and I believe this does just that.

“It’s a win-win; a win for the people who need a health centre and a way forward that offers Cromer Town Football Club a financial lifeline.”

North Norfolk District Council has supported Cromer Town Football Club and its desire to continue to play in the Anglian Combination

Football League at Cabbell Park by:

• draining land at the western end of Cabbell Park to ensure the realigned football pitch playing surface is to the required standard before the start of the new football season; • submitting plans for a match officials’ changing rooms, which if successful could be built over the summer • suggesting the use of the Cromer Academy’s outdoor sports changing rooms by football pitch users • providing the ducting to support the use of floodlights on the new realigned football pitch • clearly stating that car boot sales would be allowed to continue on the site during the forthcoming summer.

Mike Arnold, a Director of MedCentres, said “We are delighted that this way forward has been found and I’m hopeful that this will mean we can push forward with the submission of a planning application for the medical centre proposal knowing that there is a way for the football club to generate income.”

Songs of Love and Summer

Songs of Love and Summer will be performed at St Peters Parish Church, Sheringham on Saturday 18 June at 7.30pm. The Jay Singers celebrate the 400th year of Shakespeare’s death, with Songs of Love & Summer, from Elizabethan madrigals to modern American classics. Entry is £10 on the door, £8 online via Eventbrite (www.jaysingers.com)

Four hundred years after the Bard’s death in 1616, Norfolk’s Jay Singers celebrate Shakespeare with a delicious programme of song at Sheringham’s St Peter’s Parish Church. The Jays Music Director Neil MacKenzie is a founder member of The Sixteen, and was for 35 years a BBC Singer. The Jays’ midsummer’s concert will, he says, ‘feature a happy blend of music old and new with a decidedly upbeat feel’.

‘There are three strands which I wanted to highlight. The first, of course, is William Shakespeare , with the marvellous Three Shakespeare Songs by Vaughan Williams as well as Joseph Horovitz’s take on As You Like It. Secondly, in a year spent examining the nature of European identity, we will sing several examples of a great collaborative form – the madrigal. Both English and French composers feature here, from Wilbye’s luxurious Draw on sweet night to Janequin’s virtuosic Le chant des oiseaux. Finally, in an anniversary for the Jay Singers, which has enjoyed its own development over more than 20 years now, we're including some American repertoire, coincidentally in a presidential election year, culminating in the timelessly fantastic music of Gershwin and Kern.’

The Jays are particularly pleased also to welcome as accompanist, and soloist for a couple of items of his own, the acclaimed Norwich-based jazz and classical pianist Neil Ricketts. follow us on Twitter

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We are pleased to be able to report that Harvey is now back to his normal self, jumping up the front of his pen to get the attention, and a few cuddles, from his carers. His coat is also starting to grow quite nicely and we can see what a handsome boy he will be.

He is, however, not the only cat in care at present that has needed to be shaved. Flo, a pretty little tabby girl, just two years old this month, was abandoned by her heartless owner when she moved. She had not been given the kind of care and attention that a long haired cat requires and had a lot of knots close to her skin (which must have been very painful for her). A quick visit to the vets, where her tummy and chest were shaved, has resulted in a much happier little cat. Flo is a very gentle and loving little girl and deserved better treatment than this. However, she is now safe in our care and we will find her a home where she will get the love and attention she deserves.

Garfie, one of the cats that came in with the pregnant mum, has now had a further blood test which confirms he is FIV positive, as a consequence of which, he will need an indoor home. At the time of writing, we are waiting to hear whether or not a lady who already has an FIV positive cat will give him a new home. As he is such a lovely, friendly and cuddly boy, we are hopeful of a happy outcome.

At present, we have two little kittens in care, which arrived from an outdoor situation at about one week old (we do have a waiting list for kittens, so these and other ones in care, will probably be reserved as soon as we are sure they will survive). Obviously, hand rearing kittens is not the ideal situation; they do thrive better if with their mother until at least 8 weeks old. However, we always try to give these kittens a good start by feeding them with special kitten milk and, once they start to eat, special kitten biscuits and kitten pouches.

Although the kitten milk and weaning biscuits are expensive and not available in pet shops, they do make a real difference. With no mother to teach them, their carers also have to ensure they interact with them and encourage them to learn hunting and playing skills. With years of experience, their carers know that these kittens will require more of their time to ensure they develop into well-adjusted cats.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring Jessie, lovely little cat, a lovely 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible gentle girl, very laid back and for a voucher). This number is for quite lazy too! vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Sheringham Players Up Pompeii

"Ooooohhhh, titter ye not!", or so says the poor enslaved Lurcio (Tim Travers), as he tries in vain to deliver his prologue, amid the various myriad of sexual liaisons in all quarters of his master’s house in the Sheringham Players summer production of "Up Pompeii", which runs from Wednesday 15 June to Saturday 18 June with a Saturday matinee performance, at Sheringham Little Theatre, and for which tickets are now available from the theatre box office.

LEVEL, IT’S CHEAPER. QUENTIN CRISP The twenty animals in the CHRONICLE WORDSEARCH were: ANTELOPE BEAVER COYOTE DONKEY ELEPHANT FERRET GORILLA HAMSTER IGUANA JAGUAR

Why does Ludicrus the master (Graham Blyth) not leave for the Senate meeting in Rome? Why does his wife Ammonia (Helen Simmonds) return so quickly from the country? And will their son Nausius’s (Tom Denny) love poetry improve, and will their daughter Erotica (Amy knight) be the first to invent text messaging? Who will take care of the escaped slave girl Voluptua (Laura Williamson), and will Suspenda (Laura Wakefield), the well-known nymphomaniac and beauty, have her wicked way? Will Lurcio be able to hold off Captain Treacherous (Frank Bruce) and his gormless sidekick Kretinus (John Meikle)? And what is that rumbling in the distance –

what could that possibly be? Are Senna the Soothsayer's (Suzanne Challinor) predictions about to come true?

You will find the answers to all these questions while the growing chaos ensues, and Lurcio struggles to keep it all together with the help of footman Corneous (Dominic Pinkham).

The play, directed by Hazel Randall, features some familiar Sheringham Players, and a few new faces, and promises to be a riot from start to finish with classic innuendoes, saucy costumes, double entendres, mix - ups, misunderstandings and mayhem.

Recently Asked Questions and Answers

from the Clapham & Collinge Business Support team By Philip Lumb, Consultant Solicitor in the Business Support Team

Q1 Would I be able to obtain a loan against my house to invest in a Business? It is possible to borrow money against your house by either a secured loan or a further advance against your mortgage and subject to your own financial circumstances. There are likely to be conditions with any such lending, and particularly where you have an existing mortgage you should check terms that may already be in place as to any further lending. The best person to advise you in the first instance will be your mortgage broker, bank or independent financial adviser. Bear in mind that borrowing against your home will always carry the risk of re-possession if you unable to make the repayments. Financial advisers will be able to discuss different options with you, as well as the potential for obtaining any other types of loan which may not need to be secured against your home. You should also remember that if you jointly own the property with another person, you will need their consent to use the property as security for the business. They will also likely need to obtain their own independent legal advice as a part of the lending process. Q2 I am planning on working from home in 2016. Do I need any kind of insurance of other official certification? This may depend upon the nature of the work that you do and if you require any minimum levels of insurance to be in place. Your mortgage lender and home insurance company may also be required to give their approval and again this will depend upon the type of work you undertake. You will also need

to consider whether you are covered in respect of any risks to visitors to your property and therefore consider whether you are adequately covered for public liability insurance. Similarly, if you use your vehicle for business purposes you will need to upgrade your level of insurance to include this, particularly if you will be travelling to different places for your work. Bear in mind that if you have valuable equipment at your home as a result of using it as a workplace, this may fall outside the scope of your home and contents insurance. You should speak to an insurance broker as to the appropriate levels of cover.

Q3 We are an online business but our HQ & servers are based in an area that is susceptible to flooding. Do we have to declare this to new and existing clients? It sometimes happens but hasn't for years. You must be careful not to misrepresent the reliability of the service you are offering. You should assess whether the risk of flooding is reasonably foreseeable and be honest with any existing, new or prospective clients as to any difficulties you may have experienced previously. It may be worth considering (if possible) whether the risk is great enough that moving your HQ and servers would impact less on your business in this respect. In any event, you should look to implement a flood plan and what will happen if your business is affected by flooding. You should also consider updating your terms and conditions of business to include provision for what will happen if an event occurs which is outside of your control and stops your business from providing the goods or services under the contract. These clauses are commonly known as "force majeure" clauses.

Q4 How often should you update your original business plan? Would a Solicitor charge just to look it over? You should update your business plan regularly and in accordance with your business needs; for some businesses this may be as frequent as at least once a month to review planned estimates for the month against actual figures and performance. It is also advisable to do this whenever circumstances change which may alter the direction your business takes, for example, winning or losing a contract tender. As a minimum, you should look to conduct a thorough overhaul once year. A solicitor will be able to provide advice to you about the legal decisions which may impact on the growth of your business, for example, renewing a lease of premises, any employment law difficulties, or the best way to contract with third parties to minimise the risk against any claims. Solicitors should set out any costs they may charge for considering your business plan at the outset, and may be able to agree a cap or fixed fee for doing so, although it may be best to speak to your independent financial adviser or accountant in the first instance regarding your business plan. At Clapham & Collinge Solicitors we have a dedicated team of expert solicitors who can provide you with all of the necessary information, support and legal advice, in relation to employment law, commercial and business services. For more information, or if you require advice on any other legal matter, please contact Clapham & Collinge Solicitors on 01263 823398, email info@clapham-collinge.co.uk visit www.clapham-collinge.co.uk.

Sponsored cycle ride to raise funds to provide work skills experience for people with acquired brain injuries

Gaining work experience after leaving school or university can be a difficult task, as some of us may have experienced when starting out on the career ladder. However, for those who have experienced a head injury as a result of a road traffic accident, stroke or a long term neurological condition, it can seem like an impossible task.

Novero Specialist Care at Oak Farm & Oak Court, Taverham on the outskirts of Norwich, specialise in residential, nursing and rehabilitation for people recovering from their head injuries. For some, part of that rehabilitation is the desire to return to some form of work in the community, whether paid or voluntary. However, opportunities to work close to the rehabilitation units at Oak Farm & Oak Court currently do not exist – it is important for people recovering that they are close to support staff at the rehabilitation units with easy access (by wheelchair or by walking) so that they can build confidence from working in the community in familiar surroundings.

52 miles in one day

Sally King and Anita Lusher of North Norfolk Coastal Fitness are walking two marathons, 52 miles, in one day to raise funds for Mind Norwich.

The walk will start at 4am on Sunday 26 June along the Peddars way then joining the Norfolk Coastal Path at Howe and finishing on Cromer Pier at approximately 6pm - 7pm.

MIND Norwich provide excellent care and support for people with, and at risk of, mental health problems by working with the community, providing accommodation and support, giving advice and information, promoting independence and choice and ensuring equity and respect.

If you wish to support by making a donation please use the link www.justgiving.com/ northnorfolkcoastalfitness or contact North Norfolk Coastal Fitness on 07867791034

Hannah Butler-Bird, physiotherapist and Sue Hudson, occupational therapist from Novero Specialist Care, aim to raise funds from a 150 mile cycle ride across England from the West coast to the East coast (Whitehaven, Cumbria to Tynemouth, Newcastle) on Saturday 21 May in order to set up a charity shop in the Taverham/Drayton area. It is hoped that people from Novero Specialist Care (as well as those attending the local acquired brain injury rehabilitation charity Headway Norfolk and Waveney in Norwich) will be able to develop and practice their work skills in the charity shop under the guidance of a shop manager, therapy and support staff as part of their therapy/ rehabilitation programmes. As well as sponsorship, Hannah and Sue would be grateful for support from businesses in the Taverham or Drayton area who would be able

to offer premises for the new charity shop. Donations can made via

www.justgiving.com/charityshoptaverham or by emailing your pledge of financial support to sueh42393@gmail.com.

All monies raised will go directly to the charity shop start up fund. We would also be pleased to hear from anyone with information regarding suitable premises or from adult brain injury charities who would be able to operate a charity shop in Taverham/Drayton area.

Alice Arnold calls Mayday for the RNLI, inspired by iconic shipping forecast Former presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Shipping Forecast, Alice Arnold, revisits Cromarty, Hebrides, Dogger and Humber, as she reads the ‘Mayday Forecast’ to encourage the public to support the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The ‘Mayday Forecast’ follows the well-known rhythm and regions of this established British bulletin, but instead of predicting weather conditions, it predicts the number of distress calls the RNLI will respond to this year.

Maritime distress calls can come in 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with 4,700 volunteer crew members across the UK and Ireland on standby to drop everything in an instant to save lives at sea.

It was neatly timed to coincide with last bank holiday weekend’s RNLI Mayday campaign, the charity’s own call for help to raise the money needed to keep the RNLI and its 237 lifeboat stations operating.

Based on 2015 figures, the Mayday Forecast predicts approximately 8,200 people will be rescued and hundreds of lives will be saved by the RNLI’s volunteer crews around the coasts of the UK and Ireland in 2016. If 2015 is anything to go by, lifeboat crews will spend more than 229,000 hours at sea.

Forecast predictions demonstrate the scale of the RNLI’s rescue operations. The lifesaving charity relies on the generosity of the public and the forecast urges listeners to support this year’s Mayday campaign. Cromer Times 494 May 21st 2016

These include: • North East including Tyne, Dogger and Humber. 597 call outs. 1 rescue in force 11 violent storm conditions, 3 rescues in force 10 storms. 682 people rescued. 32 lives saved’ • ‘Republic of Ireland including Fastnet, Shannon. 829 call outs. Range of conditions, often rough. 1 launch in force 11 storm conditions. 965 people rescued and 24 lives saved’ • ‘Hunstanton to Dungeness including Dover. Often very rough seas. 1730 launches. 1269 people rescued. 61 lives saved’

The RNLI is close to Alice Arnold’s heart. She said ‘The dedication of volunteer lifeboat crews around our coastlines is awe inspiring. When the pager goes off, they drop everything to go and save lives, often in treacherous conditions.

I have really enjoyed reading the Mayday Forecast, highlighting the sheer number of rescues anticipated in 2016. It has been fun to do, and vitally important. I’d encourage everyone to support the RNLI to help the charity continue their life saving work.'

Paul Russell, crew member at Cromer lifeboat station, said ‘The Mayday Forecast highlights the huge number of people that RNLI volunteer crews rescue every year. We’re ready to drop everything when the pager beeps to save lives at sea.’

The Mayday campaign asks people to support the RNLI’s volunteer crews to keep them saving lives. Visit www.rnli.org/Mayday to donate and find out more information about how you can support Mayday.

Mayday fundraising events are taking place right across the UK and Ireland, many with a yellow welly theme. The public can also show their support on social media by using the hashtag #MaydayEveryday.

Jamboree Style St George's Celebrations This year the first Salhouse Scout Group were the hosts of the District St George’s Day Celebration. Lorraine Henriksen reports ‘Despite a dull start to the day weather-wise, the sun shone for our parade of 550 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers and their Leaders from across the North East Norfolk Scouts District (Scouts from Blakeney, Holt, Sheringham, Cromer, Aylsham, North Walsham, Mundesley, Stalham, Hoveton & Wroxham, Hainford & Frettenham and, of course, Salhouse who hosted this year’s St George’s Day Celebration) as they marched from the playing field in Thieves Lane, Salhouse to the Gorse Meadow field at Salhouse Broad (1.2 miles in all) - the exact location of the 1930 Jamboree which was attended by our Founder, Lord Baden Powell (B-P) and Prince George.

We were thrilled therefore that B-P’s grandson, Robin Baden Clay and his wife, Sue, were able to join us this year (all the way from their home in Dorset) for the whole day. Mr Clay was clearly moved to be able to join in our celebrations and was able to read extracts from his grandfather’s diaries. Mr Clay said “I do feel it is very important that, by attending such rallies, the young people see that they are a part of something SO much bigger than just their own pack or troop, and that they are part of “The Greatest Movement for Peace that the World has ever known.”

The impressive parade was led by ‘St George on Horseback’ and accompanied by the Band of the T.S. Norfolk Sea Cadets from Gorleston, under the careful watch of their Officer in Charge, AS/Lt (SCC) S. Carver RNR and consisted of 550 young people, 135 leaders

with 250 parents and family members following. Forty six flags from each section of every group across the district were paraded, led by the Queen’s Colour, the St George Flag and the North East Norfolk District Scout Colour and formed a Guard of Honour as they entered the field through an impressive castellated gateway, which had been built especially for the event by 1st Salhouse members. Mr Baden Clay reviewed the parade and took the salute with District Commissioner, Paul Henriksen and the new High Sheriff of Norfolk, Major General Sir William Cubitt, KCVO, CBE.

The main celebration was led by Reverend Canon Andrew Beane - Vicar of Aylsham and District Chaplain, with every section’s flag impressively flying in the breeze at the front of the arena. The main gathering included each group taking forward, one by one, a neckerchief, linking it together with the previous ‘necker’ with a ‘Friendship Knot’, lots of campfire-style songs including ‘Ging Gang Goolie’ and ‘Give Me Joy in My Heart (Shout for Scouting)’ – led by friends of Salhouse Group, Andy Betts and Andrew Hudson) - and a ‘Mexican Wave’ stunt. All 550 scouts, leaders and helpers also made their Renewal of Promises.

County Commissioner, Nickie Chapman, attended especially to present a coveted ‘Silver Acorn’ Award to the Group Leader of Hoveton & Wroxham – Terry Hughes. Terry was also thrilled to have been invited and was very much looking forward to attending the National Awards Ceremony at Windsor Castle on the following Sunday. District Commissioner, Paul Henriksen, also introduced special guest, Mrs. Hilary Richards, the Chief Executive of the children’s charity, Break who explained that the scout members present (aged from 6 years onwards Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers) had participated in some part of the Go, Go, Dragons! initiatives last summer, with several sections taking the Dragon Trail either with leaders or with parents - many Dragons were painted, modelled and moulded over the months, as well as dragon quizzes and challenges devised, medieval costumes made etc.

Hilary presented Go, Go, Dragons! gifts as prizes to the youngsters who put the most effort into collecting their pennies in the Break Go, Go, Dragons! collecting boxes last summer – the young people who received Go, Go, Dragons! mugs as prizes were three scouts from 1st Buxton Lamas (Sea Scouts) Patrick Johns, Lily-Mai Spinks and Finn Overton and, from 1st Stalham Cubs, Alfie Smith, Casey Talbot and Connie Battley. (Alfie and Casey are still in the pack as Cubs but Connie has moved up to Scouts now.)

We are not sure how much each child collected but do know that Casey filled her box to the top with small change and topped it up with her own pocket money to make sure it was “really full”. Consequently, Hilary presented Casey with a Mini Dragon (Patch) as a special congratulations for her efforts.

We were also really pleased that we were able to have our own Scouting Dragon ‘Bajestic’ on site for the celebrations. She ‘flew’ in from her new home at the Eaton Vale Activity Centre to spend the day with us, and by kind permission of Mr Daniel Dawson-Gordon of the Norfolk Antique & Reclamation Centre, one of the Duelling Dragons sculptures also watched over us.

In this Centenary year of Cub Scouting, we have many other celebrations planned including a District Camp at Holt Hall over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, but we particularly wanted to make this St George’s Day an extra special Jamboree-style Celebration for our scouting youngsters and their families to enjoy. In keeping with the medieval theme, our central celebration included the story of St George and the Dragon, vividly recounted to the gathering by storyteller-Dave Tonge. This led the youngsters nicely into the activities that followed, including the chance to try medieval activities found in a medieval village provided by family members of the Norfolk and Norwich Medieval Association, 14th Century re-enactment group.

They were able to enjoy ‘come and try’ archery, hobby horse jousting, fighting knights with favours, dressing-up as knights, sling shot demos, and medieval games, and also allowed to strike their own commemorative coins. There were also some beautiful birds of prey which the youngsters were able to hold, sword-making for the young Beavers, a ‘living village’ with ‘medieval’ cooking, crafting skills, board games, historical dancing demonstrations with audience participation, a storyteller, static birds of and so on with the afternoon rounded-off by an amazing hog roast for everyone - and lots of sunshine!’ Cromer Times 494 May 21st 2016

Introducing Joel Lodge, our Norwich City reporter

Arsenal vs. Norwich Review In what was yet another loss for Norwich fans, they could perhaps take some encouragement from the late kick off game against Arsenal who came out 1-0 victors. Norwich started off the match in positive fashion with Redmond testing Petr Cech in the early minutes of the game.

Norwich continued to perform well for the first half using a very good counter attacking style of play whilst also managing to defend relatively well.

In the latter stages off the first half Norwich started to make more chances for themselves with another good chance through Nathan Redmond at the back post but only for Cech to make another good save keeping Arsenal in the game.

However, Norwich were unable to capitalise on their first half chances, which proved to be costly.

The real game changing moment for me came in the 56th minute when Danny Welbeck was brought on for Alex Iwobi and he had an instant impact on the game. As soon as he came on, he started to stretch the Norwich defence, which paid dividends when he volleyed Arsenal ahead from Giroud’s knockdown. After the goal, Norwich could not continue with their first half form failing to regain momentum to try to get a point out of the game, which could end up proving to be vital in the relegation run in.

Unfortunately, Newcastle and Sunderland managed to pick up points at the weekend leaving Norwich in a precarious position in 19th place. Norwich vs. Manchester Utd Review Norwich yet again succumbed to another loss in the early kick off on Saturday 7 May with relegation looking a near certain. Norwich started the game in a similar fashion when they faced Arsenal away, immediately

forcing pressure on the United defence, which ultimately should have ended in a goal. In the early minutes, Cameron Jerome missed another gilt-edged chance that could have proved pivotal in the relegation battle as he headed a chance from six yards, straight at David De Gea. This summed up Norwich’s season as a whole as well as the season that Cameron Jerome has had, which has been poor overall. Manchester United failed to impress in the first half as they created very few chances for themselves. Norwich were organised at the back and forced United into making errors.

Alex Neil made a change in the 60th minute to take off Robbie Brady for Mbokani in the hope of getting 3 points out of the game with United there for the taking. I feel this change had an impact on the game, as I believe that Jerome should have been taken off over Brady. Around ten minutes after this change was made, Sebastien Bassong mistimed a header, which allowed Rooney to run clear of him to then find Juan Mata who slotted home from close range after Olsson failed to track his run. This result makes relegation a near certainty unless Newcastle and Sunderland manage to lose their remaining games. STOP PRESS - Despite a great final win against Watford 4-2, Sunderland beat Everton 30, to relegate the Canries and Newcastle to the Championship. Season round-up in next issue.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club

The NANSA afternoon team has a new Captain and David did not even select himself for the first match. This was at Cawston and resulted in a 6 – 2 win. He could however be seen prowling the banks of the green, presumably considering his team for the next game. That game was at home against Sheringham Morley Panthers and once again the team won by a 6 – 2 score line.

Tales from the Bowling Green ...

…where the morning ‘roll ups’ continue, but the competitive league season has now commenced.

Before the start of the season, a Federation friendly game had been arranged against Sheringham Morley Panthers at Sheringham. It was cold and wet, in fact horrible bowling weather. Only 12 ends were played before retiring to the bar where a quiz was taking place. Couldn’t speak as that disturbed the Quizmaster! So the team went back to the bar in the Cromer clubhouse!

In the leagues the Norfolk Bowls Association (NBA) league team were away to County Arts ‘B’ for their first game and came away with an excellent win 3½ - 1½ points. Against what I expect to be one of the stronger sides in the league, Captain Neil must be very pleased with this first game. At home the following week the team continued the good work with a 4 - 1 win against Cawston.

The team in the Norfolk County Federation Premier League travelled to Bawdeswell to play Foulsham who no longer have a green of their own. It wasn’t a very successful trip as the team lost 0 – 9. Captain Neil – another Neil – is away in Benidorm. He will not be too pleased on his return. I wonder if he found the beach.

The scores may confuse some of you as each of the leagues has a different scoring system!

• NBA League 3 rinks play 1pt for each winning rink, ½ pt. for a rink that draws plus 2pts for the team with best overall score - 5 points available.

• Federation League 3 triples play 2pts for each winning rink, 1pt for a draw plus 3 pts for team with best overall score- 9 points available.

• NANSA League 3 triples play 2pts for each winning rink, 1pt for a draw plus 2 pts for team with best overall score - 8 points available We are playing in two County club competitions in the next two weeks.

The Jermy Cup is the mixed rinks competition. Two men and two ladies must play in each of three rinks. The team are playing away against R G Carter BC.

The other competition is the Bales Cup in which three rinks of men oppose each other. In that game we are up against North Walsham who are in the County Premier League, so

a difficult game can be anticipated. In both games it is the overall shot score that decides the winning team. Not points as in league games.

Our first friendly game against a visiting club saw a mixed team play CMB BC. This has been a regular visit for some years against Cambridge Metal Box Company from Wisbech. The day was sunny with a slight breeze and the game itself was very close. I regret that Cromer lost by 93 shots to 99 but what a wonderful day was had by all.

I list below our forthcoming ‘Home’ fixtures that you may wish to come along, watch and enjoy. Friday 20 May 2pm Erpingham: NANSA League game Sunday 22 May 2pm Kings Lynn BC: Mixed Rinks game
