RNLI museum volunteers praised as heritage heroes in prestigious national industry awards

A team of RNLI museum volunteers have been hailed as heritage heroes after receiving a prestigious award in an awards ceremony dubbed the ‘Oscars’ of the museums and heritage sector

The group of volunteers at the RNLI Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer were named ‘Volunteers of the Year’ in the national Museums and Heritage Awards for Excellence awards, for their tireless efforts to promote the visitor attraction and bring history to life for its annual 45,000+ visitors.

The accolade is awarded by industry body, The Museums and Heritage Show, which organises a major annual show for professionals working in the museum sector. Now celebrating its fourteenth year, the annual awards recognise the innovators and leaders of the UK and Europe’s diverse museums, galleries and visitor attractions.

The RNLI Henry Blogg Museum illustrates the history of Cromer's lifeboats and explores the legacy of the eponymous hero who, for 37 years, served as coxswain at Cromer RNLI and helped save 873 lives. The volunteers were nominated by Katie Smith, RNLI Heritage Engage ment Manager. Continued on page 4...

RNLI museum volunteers praised as heritage heroes in prestigious national Winning the award was a nice bonus and He said ‘The RNLI’s group of volunteers more industry awards

Continued from front cover...

Katie said “During 2015, the Museum Manager needed a substantial amount of time off for personal reasons, which obviously had the potential to impact on the smooth running of the museum. However, our volunteer team went above and beyond in so many ways, becoming emergency key holders, managing the volunteer rota, running education sessions and the shop, supporting a temporary museum manager and enabling us to carry on with ‘business as usual’.

‘The commitment from the volunteers was remarkable and their efforts even helped us become the Trip Advisor number one ‘thing to do’ in Cromer and win Visit England’s ‘Best Told Story’ accolade for two years in a row.’ Four members of the wider volunteer team were presented with the award by comedian and TV personality Marcus Brigstocke in a ceremony in central London on 18 May.

than stepped up to the plate and went the extra mile in difficult circumstances, so I’m delighted to present them with this award to recognise their commitment, enthusiasm and hard work.’ The award has wider implications for the RNLI, as it recognises the charity’s overall commitment to provide excellent visitor experience at its sites and recognises the achievements of the charity’s volunteers at a national level. Victor Brett, Volunteer Shop Manager at the museum, said ‘We may have taken on extra duties but we were happy to do so, as the entire team takes huge pride in what we do and in bringing the RNLI’s history to life.

recognition of our team’s efforts.’

The award for the volunteers at the RNLI Henry Blogg Museum coincides with an appeal for more volunteers to join the award winning team. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the museum at blogg_museum@rnli.org.uk to discuss how you can help save lives at sea without getting wet!

‘George the Second’ donates to Cromer RNLI Last month Cromer RNLI had an unusual request regarding a bequest of a Swaffham man who died in March. George Atkinson was keen that money be donated to Cromer RNLI. Relatives of the gentleman, affectionately known as ‘George the Second’, contacted the station to inform them that George had died just two weeks before his 105th birthday.

Despite more than 90 years of attempts, the 104-year-old had never backed a winner at the Grand National. He had once again hoped to turn his luck around when he planned to place a bet on his 105th birthday in February 2016.

George had led a very full life, serving in the forces during the Ssecond World War. These experiences had given him a long respect and interest for the RNLI and George was always keen to hear about the work carried out at Cromer’s lifeboat station. Members of the crew had visited him in his home to talk about recent launches. George’s grandson in law Barry Willett, visited the station to present a cheque to Cromer RNLI. Barry said ‘George was an inspiration to everyone and always had a positive outlook on life. Until last year George was to be found at his local supermarket on his mobility scooter collecting money for the RNLI. We have now carried out his last request that this wonderful organisation should benefit.’

THE STRAND CLUB SPRING LUNCH

A very happy, successful afternoon was had by all at our Spring lunch. The committee decorated the pavilion in red, white and blue with table cloths, table centres made by Jackie, and union flags and bunting festooned around the walls and windows.

We welcomed two new members, Ann and Ruth, and hope they enjoy the year to come in all its variation. We also welcomed a visitor, Sue, who we hope liked us and will come again - perhaps even join our friendly throng!

Glo discussed our outing to Blickling Hall textile conservation studio on 8 June. We are car sharing so have arranged to meet at the workshop itself at 1.15pm or very soon after. Our tour starts at 1.30pm and we must not miss the start! We will all have tea together afterwards. The studio is at Oulton Street, a small village just beyond Blickling Hall and takes about 30 minutes to get to from Overstrand.

We then enjoyed our lovely, varied cheese salad, bought and laid out by Jean, Josie, Chris and Kay. Glo's trifles were soon demolished and pronounced delicious! The committee then prepared tea and coffee (and chocolate mints!) for everyone. The colouring competition was judged and the winners announced - first prize went to Tony, second to Jackie and third to Chris. The raffle was won by the two Anns, Jean, Audrey and Jill.

We would like to thank Jean, Miriam and Sue for their sterling work washing up - a mammoth task today, and also everyone on the committee who supplied things and came early on the day to set everything up. Our club is going from strength to strength and if you would like to learn more, please contact Glo who is our Programme Co-ordinator, on 01263 576539, or Chris our Secretary on 01263 579433.

Do come along and try us out. Visitors pay £2 at the door, which includes refreshments, and raffle tickets are available separately throughout the afternoon. We meet every month except August and our next one open to everyone is on 13 July at the Pavilion in Overstrand. Coming to talk to us will be a representative from Memory Joggers a group who have all sorts of wonderful and entertaining ways to help us in our fight against memory loss as we get older.

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB

For many, a world cruise is the fulfilment of a dream as they approach retirement after a lifetime of work.

The speaker at the Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club’s May lunch meeting, however, has already ‘been there, done that’ frequently. Captain Albert Schoonderbeek commands cruise ships around the world and recounted vividly, and very amusingly, some of the many trips he has undertaken.

From Antarctica in the south, to the Arctic in the north, and all the oceans and islands in between, Captain Schoonderbeek made us very aware of the scale that cruising has become in the past 30 years or so, and it continues to grow.

A lifetime at sea naturally produces many anecdotes and clearly not everything is ‘plain sailing’. The rapid expansion of communications has great benefits but so dependent on technology have we become that, for some passengers, losing a mobile phone signal at sea in the Arctic Ocean almost leads to a minor mutiny! Friends and family at home, trying to contact passengers, fear the cruise liner may have sunk.

The 75 members and their lady guests were greatly appreciative of the Captain’s rich sense of humour and Malcolm Poore, on behalf of all those present, gave a well-deserved vote of thanks.

The next meeting of the Club is the AGM on Tuesday 7 June following the lunch at the Links Hotel, West Runton.

If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or business man and would like to meet a group of very friendly men for lunch and to hear an entertaining speaker once a month please contact our Lunch Secretary, Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club.

Cromer Times 495 June 4th 2016

Retired bank manager is Rotary President for second time Brother elected Vice-President

Roger Hill, former TSB bank manager in Cromer and Rotary President 14 years ago, has become President of Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club for the second time.

He succeeds Debz Conisbee, who has left for the United States prior to undertaking missionary work In Cambodia. At the Roger Hill (right) with brother Alan handover, former police Divisional Commander (Superintendent) Alan Hill, Roger’s brother, was elected Vice-President.

Roger (76) was born in Colchester and attended Colchester Royal Grammar School before joining the Trustee Savings Bank in 1956. After service with the bank in Colchester and Mildenhall, he moved to become manager of the Cromer branch in 1974. He joined Round Table locally in 1975 and then Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club in 1981. Since first becoming President in 2002, he has served on various committees, including several years as Treasurer.

Since retiring he has worked as a bookeeper and, with this expertise, has been very active in the community in Cromer. He has, at various times, been Treasurer of Cromer Lifeboat Station, Cromer Chamber of Trade and Cromer VEO (the Carnival organisation). He joined Cromer Sea Scouts in 1975, becoming Group Leader for 10 years. He is still District Treasurer for the North East Scouts Council. For his work locally and within Rotary, he was awarded the coveted Paul Harris Fellowship. He and his wife Mary celebrate their Golden Wedding this year.

Up Pompeii

If you are looking to find some saucily clad women, hilarious twists and turns, great comedy lines, fantastic costumes and erupting scenery this summer, look no further than The Sheringham Players summer production of Up Pompeii at Sheringham Little Theatre (Thursday 15 and Saturday 18 June. The expected popularity and demand for the show has necessitated an additional matinee performance on Saturday. Tickets are already selling very well, and the show looks to be another series of sell out performances for this very popular local group.

The play, written by Miles Tredinnick is based on the original characters devised by Talbot Rothwell and Sid Colin for the Frankie Howard BBC comedy. This hilarious romp through ancient Pompeii brings back all the television favourites in this full-length play, and as Lurcio attempts to deliver his prologue and begin proceedings, he is quickly caught up in the myriad of sexual liaisons in all quarters of his master's house. Why does Ludicrus not leave for the Senate meeting in Rome? Why does his wife return so quickly from the country? Who will take care of the escaped slave girl, Voluptua, and will Nausius's love poetry improve? Whilst growing chaos ensues, an increasing rumbling is heard in the distance – what could that possibly be? A riot from start to finish.

Sheringham Players are already working on their autumn production for November, ‘The Great Escape - from a Residential Home’ written by Andy Powrie, and based on the film staring Steve McQueen, but with an unusual hilarious twist. They are also planning their programme for 2017 for which they will be looking to fill a number of roles on stage and behind the scenes. So, if you are interested in acting, helping with make-up, costumes, prompting, back-stage or props, and like the idea of joining a local friendly group and would like to know more, then check the web site www.sheringham-players.org.uk or contact our Chairman Tim Travers at tim.p.travers@gmail.com.

Summertime – and the music is jazzy Jazz is becoming the music for all seasons at a north Norfolk venue, as sessions are added to the summer programme for the first time.

Sheringham Little Theatre has been hosting jazz for many years during the autumn, winter and spring. And the current Jazz @ the Hub sessions are proving so popular they are being carried on through the peak summer months. Theatre director Debbie Thompson said the jazz regularly drew sell out 60-strong crowds to the Hub coffee bar.

“It is so well attended we did not want people to miss out in the summer, and we hope holidays also come and enjoy the sessions too,” she added. Organiser of the Jazz in the Hub sessions Vic Brown said the aim was to provide “melodic jazz standards” rather than trad or modern variants. Mr Brown and his wife Jean, from Trunch, scout jazz talent from across Norfolk and Suffolk for the Sheringham sessions. He praised the Hub venue where musicians were happy to play because they were “listened to by appreciative regulars.

Mr Brown is also a musician having learned drums at school, played in rock bands in London in the 1960s and resumed playing – and his love of jazz – on moving to Norfolk in the 1990s.

He is the drummer in the Norfolk Jazz Quartet and says there is still a good following for jazz at Sheringham at a time when other clubs were cutting Cromer Times 495 June 4th 2016

down on their jazz nights.

He was in the Norwich Student Jazz Orchestra from 2006-2012 and has been part of the Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra since 2012 He and a group will play standards and originals. Monday August 8 – The Norfolk Jazz Quartet Tim Densham (clarinet and sax) Peter Gregory (guitar), Liz Underdown (bass) and Vic Brown (drums) will play swinging jazz standards and music from the American Song Book.

Monday August 29 – Simon Brown Trio – Performer, arranger, musical director and music education Simon Brown (piano) regularly plays with a range of top British and International artist. His Hub show will feature a varied repertoire with Jose Canha (bass ) and Alex Best (drums). Other music at the theatre in coming months includes :

This gnocchi wasn’t on our demonstration stall but it is a really tasty, slightly unusual dish to prepare and enjoy (perhaps with something chilled and dry…!) as you sit out in the garden this summer. Please pick up your dog’s waste – message from school children ‘Poosters’ formally unveiled at North Norfolk schools

Young people across North Norfolk have been turning their hand to designing posters urging people to clean up after their dogs.

The ‘dog poosters’ have been created by children at Little Snoring Primary, Neatishead Primary, North Walsham Junior, Millfield Primary in North Walsham and Sheringham Primary.

They highlight the dangers of disease spread by dog fouling, encourage people to bag and bin their dog’s mess and point out the law governing the clearing up of dog waste.

The work has been turned into small posters to be put up around schools, larger A2 boards to be put up in the vicinity of schools and signage for some of the district’s bin collection lorries. Each school produced three winning designs. From those 15 designs, three were chosen to create the lorry signage.

Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Environmental Services said “The majority of dog owners are responsible and pick up after their dogs, but there are some owners still acting in an irresponsible way, leaving their dog’s waste as a health risk and nuisance to others.

“We hope these wonderful posters made by young people who care about their local communities encourage those irresponsible dog owners to bag up their pet’s mess and put it in a bin.”

Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett Cabinet Member for North Norfolk District Council’s Environmental Services visited schools last month to present winners with a professionally printed version of their poster.

Old Pastonian Masonic Lodge Celebrations

Celebrations took place recently for the 50th Anniversary of the consecration of the Old Pastonian Masonic Lodge. The event, which was marked by a White Table event attended by over 80 members, friends and family, took place at St Giles in Norwich.

The Lodge was founded in 1966, and was closely linked to the Paston Grammar School, North Officers of the Old Pastonian Lodge at Walsham. In recent their celebratory evening years it has opened its membership to those with n previous connection to the school, which became a college in 1984 following the merger of the Paston Grammar School with the North Walsham Girls High School.

Steve Baker (pictured centre) is the current Master of the Lodge, and said that the event was notable for a number of reasons “My father was one of the founding members back in 1966, so to be able to mark the occasion was also a tribute to those involved in the forming of that lodge at that time. Having the celebration also provided an opportunity to reminds us of the role of freemasonry in the local community by enjoying historic ceremony, and engaging with local and national organisations and charities, to help those in need.”

Although one of Norfolk’s younger lodges, it is one of 76 in the county, the oldest having met continuously in Norwich since 1736.

Norfolk Dealer Raises £12,000 for ParalympicsGB

A North Norfolk Nissan dealership has raised more than £12,000 for the British Paralympic Association in support of the carmaker’s role as Official Automotive Partner of ParalympicsGB. Crayford and Abbs Nissan in Gypsies Lane, Holt, generated the cash through a series of fundraisers helping to supercharge ParalympicsGB’s assault on the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. First, staff, friends and customers of the dealership cycled, swam and ran almost 12,000 miles – the distance from North Norfolk to Rio and back – raising almost £6,000. They also completed a six-and-a-half hour cross trainer marathon at a nearby supermarket in Cromer.

Then, on Saturday evening, a black tie charity dinner and auction at the Links Hotel, West Runton, gave the coffers a further boost, taking the grand total beyond the £10,000 mark.

The charity dinner featured an inspiring talk by Duncan Slater an injured ex-serviceman who walked to the South Pole with Prince Harry and had just returned from running six marathons in six days in the Sahara Desert for the charity Walking With the Wounded.

The Deputy Lieutenant of Norfolk, Colonel Jamie Athill Rtd, also attended and gave the introductory speech.

Guests at the dinner were also thanked for their support in video messages recorded by two-time Paralympian and Nissan ambassador, Stef Reid, and James Wright, Managing Director of Nissan Motor (GB).

In her message, Stef Reid, a silver medallist in the long jump at London 2012, said “Thanks to all of you and to Crayford and Abbs for your fundraising efforts, which are amazing. Obviously money isn’t everything but it’s super important in our sport for performance and it feels really awesome to know that you guys are behind us and encouraging us the whole way. So thank you.”

James Wright added “The total raised by the dealership is magnificent and will make a massive difference to ParalympicsGB’s athletes as they prepare for Rio 2016. Raising this amount is an incredible achievement and my thanks go to everyone at Crayford and Abbs for the efforts they have gone to.” Speaking after the dinner, Kevin Abbs, Managing Director at Crayford and Abbs, said “We’re very proud of what we achieved and we’re all massively looking forward to Rio 2016 and being able to cheer on our athletes knowing we’ve played a small part in their success.”

Volunteering at Holt Hall

“As volunteers we have the opportunity to work in a beautiful walled garden, Victorian greenhouse and poly tunnel. We see the whole satisfying process from sowing, to planting, to cropping – of course we have to deal with a few weeds on the way! Volunteering at Holt Hall isn’t all about work either – we enjoy each other’s company, have lots of laughs and also meet visitors and chat about the garden and Hall on Open Days.” – written by some of the Holt Hall volunteers who work in the garden on Mondays.

If you are interested in volunteering at Holt Hall, why not pop along to our Open Day on 19 June and meet some of the other volunteers who will be running the car park, working hard in the café or working in the garden. Our Open Days help to raise money for a Bursary Fund, which supports Norfolk children on residential visits to Holt Hall.

Hip hip hooray! Cheer on donkey due at Club, which allows supporters to sponspecial birthday party Adoption sor an Adoption Star resident for just £12.50 a As the country prepares to cheer on Sir Bradley Wiggins at this year’s Rio Olympics, visitors to Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s Aylsham Visitor Centre are also being invited to cheer on two special donkeys at their birthday party this summer.

Outgoing and mischievous Wiggins was named in honour of Sir Bradley Wiggins, having arrived at Redwings shortly after the athlete cycled to victory at the London Olympics in 2012. Poor Wiggins was taken in by the charity, which cares for 1,500 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules at centres across the UK, after being discovered abandoned. At the same time, the owner of a donkey called Wacko contacted Redwings asking for urgent help in finding him a new home after the livery yard he had been living at closed down. The two lonely donkeys were brought together by Redwings and struck gold by finding friendship in each other. The inseparable duo proved such a hit with visitors that they quickly joined the charity’s

year, with every penny going directly towards their daily care and that of their friends.

Supporters can visit their Adoption Star for free during any open day at the centre where they live and receive updates on their four-legged friend’s progress. They are even invited to celebrate their new friend’s birthday with a party where supporters can join in the fun and festivities, while their Adoption Star tucks intoa specially made cake, just for them! Wiggins and Wacko, who can be adopted jointly, will be celebrating their 12th birthday with a party at Redwings Aylsham, north of Norwich, on Sunday 12 June at 11am.

Gemma Walpole, Redwings’ Head of Fundraising, said “Having been lonely for so long, Wiggins and Wacko have flourished into lovable and mischievous donkeys since finding friendship in each other. We hope as many people as possible will be able to come along and cheer them on, just like Wiggins’ namesake!” And if partying with such a fun pair wasn’t enough, Redwings Aylsham’s other resident

Walking in the air for Cromer charity

About With Friends member Peter White doesn’t let his disability stop him from reaching for the sky and so on 29 June he will be walking in the air to raise money for the Cromer based charity. Peter is going to do a Wingwalk in the skies over Gloucestershire when he will be strapped standing to the top wing of a biplane flown by an experienced member of The Flying Circus Aerosuperbatics team.

Adoption Stars will also be celebrating their birthdays this summer, including:

• Cheeky Miniature Shetland ponies The Gangsters on Sunday 24 July • Handsome thoroughbred cross horse Gulliver on Sunday 28 August

Redwings Aylsham also provides a safe and happy home to 50 rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules who would love a cuddle too! Wiggins and Wacko’s birthday party will take place on Sunday 12 June at 11am. Join in the celebrations at Redwings Aylsham, Spa Lane, Aylsham, Norfolk NR11 6UE. For more information about the Adoption Club or to sponsor a Redwings Adoption Star, visit www.redwings.org.uk/adopting

Peter, who works in the About With Friends’ Community Shop in Garden Street, Cromer every Tuesday and Thursday had already done parachute jumps to raise money for other charities and he decided he would like to help raise money towards a new minibus for the organisation which is well known in Norfolk.

As well as laying on a busy programme of social activities for children and adults, the charity also has a popular Workskills programme where more than 50 adults with a learning disability come to work on one or more days each week. This might be in the Community Café in Tucker Street, in the Catering or Gardening teams or in the Community team that provides lunch clubs for the over 55s and visits residents in Halsey House. Some members also make craft items and woodwork products, which are sold in the Community shop where Peter works.

The charity’s big red minibus has been a regular sight across Norfolk (and as far afield as Belgium) for the past 8 years and is desperately in need of replacement. Peter’s brave Wingwalk will help raise a lot of money towards the new bus.

You can support Peter by sponsoring him at his MyDonate page mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/peterwingwalk

New Resident at Lloyd Court – Ollie Lloyd

Lloyd Court, Housing with Care scheme, run by Norsecare in High Kelling near Holt, have welcomed a new friend. But this one is a little different.

Ollie Lloyd the owl (known as Ollie to his friends!) perched in his custom twisted willow tree, has been generously donated by roadside chainsaw carver, Arnie Barton, as a gift for all the tenants of Lloyd Court to enjoy.

carving, and quickly fell in love with the art, in which he is incredibly talented.

Adorable Ollie Lloyd The owl, who has taken up residency at Lloyd Court in High Kelling

The owl in a tree sculpture is one of only two of its kind to date, which Arnie says is a unique design of his own. The tree is made from various pieces of salvaged branches and topped with one of Arnie’s popular chainsaw carved owls.

Arnie claims to have been interested in woodwork from a young age, and has previously worked as a bench joiner, building luxury Fairline boats. Looking to earn a living and alternative lifestyle for Talented Chainsaw Carver, himself and his Arnie Barton, in action, at girlfriend, Arnie his roadside ‘workshop’. took up chainsaw

When he is not driving around in his carving customised van, Arnie can often be seen working and displaying his sculptures on the A148 between Cromer and Aylmerton, but he also creates commission pieces and attends shows and events, where he demonstrates his skill, and offers sculptures for sale. The tree sculptures, like the one donated to Lloyd court, can be topped with any choice of carvings, including squirrels, birds and bugs!

Lloyd Court Manager, Marie Quantrill said “I didn’t know anything about Arnie’s generous donation at first. It was a surprise organised between himself and our Business Administrator, Lucy Cubitt. I was absolutely thrilled to discover what Arnie had made for us, and all the tenants, staff and visitors have commented on how beautiful Ollie is!” Tenants at Lloyd Court were asked to suggest names from the owl and, from the most popular suggestions, Norsecare Re-

gional Director, Roy Slater, said, “Ollie’ is a good choice by the tenants. Let’s give him a full title ‘Ollie Lloyd’; fitting for our new friend.” Arnie’s website, with pictures of his work, and contact details can be found at Arnie Barton, and Ollie the www.chainsawowl, in place at Lloyd Court carvingsroadside.com

Can you Find Room in your Heart and Home to Foster or Adopt awareness of greyhounds as lovely pets. an Unwanted Greyhound? See www.greatglobalgreyhoundwalk.co.uk for full details. Officially

Norfolk Greyhound Rescue are appealing for people to adopt unwanted racing greyhounds and are particularly seeking those wonderful souls who feel able to offer foster homes to these gentle creatures.

Their aim is to transport greyhounds from Ireland, where many of these hounds are bred. Whether they have raced or not, many end up unwanted and at serious risk. Unlike some charities, NGR pride themselves on the fact that everything is volunteer-led and nobody in the organisation takes payment for their efforts. They genuinely do it for our love of the hounds! NGR is also happy to be hosting the Cromer ‘leg’ of the Great Global Greyhound Walk on Sunday 19 June, starting at Runton Rd Car Park at 10.30am and walking the Promenade and Pier. This event takes place all over the UK and also abroad, when thousands of greyhounds are walked to raise

this walk is for Greyhounds and other Sighthounds only.

Happily, the message is gradually getting across about what lovely pets greyhounds make. Generally they are gentle, quiet and lazy pets, requiring much less exercise than you would think. They prefer sleeping to anything else, except perhaps for treats. They have occasional crazy, kooky moments where they show what clowns they can be! This combination is usually enough to steal the heart of any dog-loving human.

Fosterers would have all the dog's expenses paid whilst the hound is in their care. It works for caring people who cannot have another dog permanently but who are happy to share their lives with a greyhound until he/she goes to their adopted family. It's also a good way to see whether you enjoy the company of a greyhound.

Fostering is a very fulfilling role - it's all about saving greyhound lives and preparing them for a forever home. For each hound found a foster home in or around Norfolk, a space is cleared for another to go into a rescue kennel in Ireland.

To find out more about fostering or adopting from Norfolk Greyhound Rescue, please look at the website mentioned above, email hayley@norfolkgreyhoundrescue.co.uk, or phone her on 07470 931758.

Payment of a brother’s private school fees held to be in ‘best interests’ of his sister Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

In the case of David Ross v A [2015] a girl (called ‘A’ in the case) had been brain-damaged after birth as a result of medical negligence. The parents settled for an award of £5 million. A professional person was appointed by the Court of Protection (‘the Court’) to manage A’s finances (known as the ‘Deputy’ – ‘D’). He spoke warmly of the excellent care that A’s parents gave her at home. D approved various payments out of A’s award, including the costs of adapting the family home. D thought that external care packages would have been much more expensive and much less good.

A’s brother (‘B’) inevitably suffered as a result of his sister’s condition and had problems at his primary school and failed to get a place at the selective state senior school of his choice. B was described as having great potential to achieve with the right education.

D, at the request of the family, made an application to the Court to authorise the

payment of private school fees for B out of A’s award. The application was lost in the Court system for nearly 2 years and, in that intervening period, D paid B’s school fees out of A’s fund, in the hope that the Court would retrospectively authorise the expenditure.

The Official Solicitor (“OS”) was appointed to represent A’s interests and opposed the application. He claimed repayment of the school fees that had already been paid.

The OS argued that A had never assumed the financial responsibility and was not responsible for causing harm to her brother, as a result of her condition. The OS argued that D had to represent the interests of A only, and not B’s and the wider family.

Senior Judge Lush allowed D’s application for the payment of B’s school fees and castigated the OS for his “unnecessary intrusive and hostile approach”. Judge Lush criticised the “microscopic scrutiny” by OS of D’s expenditure and the OS’s condemnation of the family’s dependence on the award. Judge Lush said that the family were dependent on A’s award in the same way as A was dependent upon her family for care and said that “it was insensitive and demeaning to stigmatise them for deciding to sacrifice their own careers and earning-potential by staying at home and caring for their profoundly disabled child on a full-time basis.”

Judge Lush noted a range of factors. These included that the family were living well within the awarded sum, which had in fact grown in size. It would continue to be sustainable, even with the payment of school fees. Mutual dependency was inevitable and B’s needs were important. If the parents went back to work and paid for external carers it

would have more than doubled the family’s outgoings. Judge Lush said that the OS’s approach was “unnecessarily cautious, paternalistic and risk-averse and would have the effect of stifling the family’s hopes and aspirations”.

A’s ‘best interests’ (as defined by the Mental Capacity Act) were difficult to determine, but the views of the parents and D were considered important. However, the case is not a precedent for the payment of school fees in similar situations.

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY

The speaker at our May meeting was Chris Branford who is well-known to many Cromer residents as the organiser of the very successful Wednesday morning lectures for the Cromer Society.

His subject was Joseph Paxton and his place in the history of gardening. The son of a Bedfordshire farmer, Paxton began his working life at the age of thirteen and soon came under the influence of William Griffin at Woodhall Park in Hertfordshire. Griffin was a member of the Royal Horticultural Society and gave the young Paxton a good grounding in the ways of a successful gardener.

Paxton became head gardener for the Duke of Devonshire, first of all at his London residence at Chiswick House and then in 1826 at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire where Paxton remained for 23 years. Paxton began developing a pinetum and later an arboretum, which were attracting over 80,000 visitors a year by 1847.

An orchid house was begun which housed over 400 specimens and he had great success growing bananas throughout the year, no mean feat in the 1830s. Because it proved to be resistant to disease, unlike other varieties of banana available at the time, all bananas today are descended from Paxton’s original plant.

Paxton also oversaw the Duke’s ambition to develop waterfalls and other water features that were better than those seen in Germany during a visit in 1837. By diverting a river and building an 8 acre lake, enough

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

What a lovely demonstration we had with Melissa Sheldrake. Her title was ‘Thyme Machine’, a pun on words as we were transported to 23rd century Ancient Greece, 1666 The Great Fire of London to 1969 and the space rocket Apollo, all with musical accompaniment.

Her flowers were beautiful with traditional and some exotic species.

Melissa judged our competition entitled ‘Maypole’ and Noreen Hawes was best in show.

pressure was produced to create the Emperor Fountain that reached a height of 290 feet. Glasshouses were renovated and extended, including one that was 67 feet high and had a hot water heating system. Some of the water lilies grown were over 5 feet across and a photograph exists that shows Paxton’s daughter Annie standing on one!

It is for designing and building the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition of 1851 that Paxton is, perhaps, most well-known. It is estimated that over 15 million people from all over the world visited the exhibition and the profits from the exhibition were used to buy land in Kensington in London on which the Royal Albert Hall and the famous museums found in that area were built.

Paxton designed glasshouses for many wealthy clients including three at Somerleyton Hall in Suffolk. One of them is used today at the visitors’ tearoom.

Chris’ enthusiasm for his subject and the amount of detail he was able to put across made for a very successful meeting. In June. we are hosting the annual quiz with our friends from the Hoveton/Wroxham and Sheringham garden societies. In July, the Cromer and District Garden Society will be celebrating its 60th anniversary. For the society to flourish, new members are always needed. At the moment membership stands at about 55 but more would be most welcome. Details can be obtained from the Chairman on 01263 514399.

733145 01263 823220 Norman Lamb says Queen’s speech a 01263 missed opportunity for public services Sheringham North Norfolk Post www.dunhamgroundworks.co.uk mark@dunhamgroundworks.co.uk

Based in Trimingham

The Queen’s Speech failed to address some of the biggest challenges facing the country, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has warned in a House of Commons debate on ‘Defending Public Services’.

Mr. Lamb said that the safety of patients is being put at risk by the immense financial pressure facing the NHS, three days after NHS trusts announced a record deficit of £2.45bn. He highlighted the “massive consequences” of the underfunding of mental health and cuts to preventive services, including immense pressure on hospitals and an increase in the scandalous practice of people with mental illness being shunted around the country in search of a bed.

Mr. Lamb also pointed to the high number of people with mental illness in prisons, and a spike in prison suicides, as a “fundamental failure of public policy”. Challenging the Government to “radically reduce the number of people who end up inappropriately in our prisons”, he 26

repeated his call for end to the so-called ‘war on drugs’, a legalised and regulated cannabis market, and a greater focus on mental health treatment orders as an alternative to prison sentences.

Speaking after the debate, Norman Lamb said “The Queen’s Speech was a real missed opportunity to address these critical challenges. Every day we are confronted with stark new evidence of the pressures facing health and care services. As well as more funding, there is now an overwhelming need for all parties to come together to design a new long-term settlement for the system. We also have to stop unfairly criminalising young people and gifting billions of pounds to organised crime through our arcane drugs laws. Britain is behind the curve on this. I strongly believe we must follow the more enlightened and evidence-based policies adopted in countries such as Canada, Portugal and Uruguay, with a focus on safety and public health through regulation rather than dishing out criminal records and prison sentences.” Cromer Times 495 June 4th 2016

Brand New Rock & Soul Choir starting in West Runton

If you love singing, you’ll love this! Invidia Voices - Rock & Soul Choir have a brand new rehearsal group starting 22nd June in West Runton. But don’t worry if you think you can’t sing because they are kicking off with a singing workshop for beginners to prove that anyone can have fun singing, no matter how bad they think they are!

Founded in 2013 by husband and wife team Matt and Alex Emmerson, Invidia Voices has fast become one of Norfolk’s largest vocal groups growing to over 300 members in just a few years. With rehearsal groups available in North Walsham, Norwich, Acle, Great Yarmouth, Wymondham and now West Runton, Invidia owes its popularity to it’s fun and easy going approach to singing, but Matt says “the best thing about this choir is our members. I’ve never met such a lovely, friendly and supportive bunch of people!” He went on to explain “There's no audition required and no need for any musical background, just a love of singing. Uplifting, fun and incredibly social, Invidia Voices is a non-religious singing group whose aim is simply to smile, laugh and sing with like minded people. And who knows, you might discover that you’re not a bad singer after all!

To find out more about groups in your area or upcoming workshops, visit www.invidiavoices.co.uk or call 01603 464532.

Laser treatment of excessive underarm sweating Until now, there were very few long-term solutions for treating excessive underarm sweating.

Surgical treatments include removal of sweat glands, which could be associated with complications. Any surgery can be associated with prolonged recovery time and issues with healing and scarring. Other treatment operations involve interrupting major nerves inside the thorax. This operation was often associated with unacceptable complications, and is rarely performed.

Now there is a minimally invasive quick solution for long-term reduction of excessive underarm sweating. Lasers have revolutionized all areas of medicine and surgery. Now we have a minimally invasive laser procedure, to selectively destroy the sweat glands without requiring incisions.

Norfolk and Norwich Open Studios

For two weeks every May/June, Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios celebrates the county’s artists and their creativity by offering them the opportunity to open their doors to the public to exhibit, sell, and talk about their work. It gives visitors the chance to experience new art, meet artists, and to buy original artworks directly from their creators.

North Norfolk Organisation for Visual Artists (NOVA) was formed in 2000 as a liaison group between the Open Studios organisation and the artists of North Norfolk, thus it's title. Membership is continually rising and is currently in excess of 60 artists, covering most if not all mediums.

So how is laser sweat reduction performed? This is performed purely under a local anaesthetic. A special test is used to delineate and mark the overactive sweat glands. A solution of anaesthetic is used to numb the areas of excessive sweating. When the area has been numbed up, a tiny laser fiber is introduced under the skin and the laser is activated. The laser energy destroys the sweat glands without causing any damage to the surrounding tissues. In some cases, a tiny hollow tube is introduced and the destroyed sweat glands are easily sucked out. The procedure only takes about one hour.

What is the recovery like? Most patients are back to normal within 48 hours. There can be a minor degree of swelling and discomfort. Generally, the procedure is very well tolerated with reduction in sweating of up to 70 to 80%. Patients who had the procedure comment that first time in years they have been able to wear T-shirts without having to change them regularly.

To find out more information or to book an appointment please log on to www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call 0800 0430737.

‘Middle of NovaWhere’ is a collective of artists from the North Norfolk Organisation of Visual Artists (NOVA). For 2016 they have set up a group exhibition as part of the Open Studios event, in the wonderful setting of Thorpe Market Church, to give visitors the chance to experience a diverse amount of talent in one location.

Often the artists have little space to show people around their own studios and as a solitary artist they find the two weeks of ‘NovaWhere’ Open Studios a great opportunity to be inspired by their co-exhibitors, or by the setting in which they show their work.

Artists exhibiting are David Cottrell, Lesley Ash, Susanne Lakin, John Rance, Leslie Hawkes Nockels, Shane (arTEEsane) and Chris Sharpe

Cycling Land’s End to John O’Groats for Help the Heroes James Daintree from Aylmerton is cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise money for Help for Heroes.

James served in the Royal Navy for over 10 years and spent most of his time on board the HMS Gloucester but also served alongside the Royal Marines at RNAS Yeovilton. During his service, he completed tours in various countries including the Falklands, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan. His brother served in the RAF and both his parents and uncle in the Army. Having experienced war zones and their effect on people first hand, James chose to support the charity Help for Heroes for his cycle ride.

End of Season Roundup

by Joel Lodge

Norwich City endured a season of what could have been. They missed out on plenty of opportunities to gain points throughout the season and have ultimately come up short, finishing in 19th place along with Aston Villa and Newcastle. There were a few games in particular that had large contributions in Norwich’s downfall - the first of which being a 6-2 loss against Newcastle away in mid-October.

His Just Giving Page is www.justgiving.com/fundraising/James-Daintree

I believe this was pivotal as it was our first major loss of the season in terms of the amount of goals we conceded. I believe this really psychologically damaged the teams spirit going into the rest of the season. Another key game that contributed to the relegation of Norwich was in late January when they fell to a 5-4 loss at home to Liverpool, I feel as though this game was the one that changed the season of Norwich the most, this was due to the weird nature of the game and how intense it felt throughout. Norwich were 3-1 up by the 54th minute and allowed Liverpool to lead through conceding three goals in the space of 20 minutes. Everyone thought that Norwich had salvaged a point after Bassong scored a wonderful goal in stoppage time, to eventually have all their work undone by Lallana crushing the hearts

of 25,000 plus fans inside Carrow Road. I feel that this result demoralised Norwich so much as it came at a point where Norwich could have and should have picked up three points after a poor run of games. Overall Norwich could not handle with the quality of the Premier League due to still having a very similar squad to the one that was previously relegated in 2014. This is why Norwich City needs to have a summer of

transition and an overhaul in the boardroom as well as with the playing staff. Norwich have already made progress by sacking David McNally and they need to stop being sentimental with players if they want to progress as a club and turn into a secure and stable Premier League side rather than being a yo-yo club.

‘Lots’ of Promises to Keep Walking There is a great chance to bid for all sorts of items on offer at the North Norfolk Fit Together Auction of Promises at Gresham Village Hall on the evening of 4 June, 6.30pm registration for a 7pm start.

Businesses and individuals from all over north Norfolk have contributed, from a sponge cake you can secretly enjoy on your own through to afternoon tea on the terrace of the House of Commons with local MP Norman Lamb. Afternoon out at various venues, vouchers from local supermarkets, a day trip on the Broads and brewery tours are all amongst the lots in the catalogue. Top photographer David Morris has contributed a signed print, which would grace the wall of any home or business. Chairman John Tomlinson and Walks Co-Ordinator Mel Brown show off the picture in our photo. Fit Together is a registered charity that grew out of the Active Norfolk programme, once reliant on funding from District and County Councils but now responsible for its own fund-raising. Regular and supported health walks across the region are the most popular part of the programme. Also offered are other physical activities aimed at improving health including tea dances, circuit training for the older person, badminton and line dancing. However, for the auction you will be able to be reasonably sedentary – though hopefully with a lot of raising of the arm to indicate you would like to bid for one of the promises!

Would you like to sit down and get fit in your local library? North Norfolk District Councils Sports Clubs and Hubs project is now providing seated exercise classes in local libraries.

If you have never tried a seated exercise class before then you may be surprised at how much fun you can have sitting down. These classes are suitable for everyone and if you have a disability or lack of mobility or you just want to increase your fitness, then seated classes are a good way to increase your fitness levels without any stress on your muscles or joints.

It is also a good way to meeting new people and socialise at the same time. All our sessions are led by fully qualified instructors and will ensure that you have a safe and effective class.

We have three classes running at present : Holt Library Monday morning 10am – 10.45am Cromer Library Thursday morning 10.30am – 11.15am Sheringham Library starting Friday 10 June 2pm – 2.45pm Al our sessions are just £1 per person.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club Tales from the Bowling Green ...

…………………and friendly games and competitive league games are the order of the day. The NBA league game against Suffield Park was cancelled due to our opponents being unable to raise a team. Captain Neil organised a game between all squad members and a good evening was had by all. However when the league games was played the following week it wasn’t so good. At Suffield Park the home team had a distinct advantage and Cromer lost 1 – 4. A very disappointing result. The Federation Premier team playing at home against Wootton Park had an excellent home win 7 – 2 and then followed this up with an away win against Whissonsett with resulted in a very a close 5 – 4 result. Continuing with the league games David’s NANSA team played at Mundesley and continued with the winning start by coming away with a very good 7 – 1 win. The next game was at home against Erpingham and the team was confident. Whoops, everything turned upside down and the team crashed to a 0 – 8 defeat. Difficult to understand after such a good start – but that is bowls for you. The last game played was an away game against North Walsham New Road. Hoping for a better result than Erpingham Captain David was disappointed as he had to struggle to get a team due to an excess of unavailable players. However he had the full team of 9 players on the afternoon. On what proved to be a very close game the team were unlucky to come away with a 3 – 5 defeat. Unlucky, because the overall score was 43 shots each team, a draw, but due to the way the scoring system works North Walsham ended up winning. The friendly against CMB BC from Wisbech was a very close game and resulted in a 93 – 99 loss. A wonderful day took place against our second

visitors, Narborough BC from Leicestershire. The club President brought the team on tour playing the same clubs and staying at the same Cromer hotel that his father had arranged when he was club President some 50 years ago. Cromer club President Bernice was able to point out that the commemorative plaque given to the club in 1966 was still on show in the clubhouse! The visitors were provided with a buffet when they arrived at lunchtime and were very supportive of the bar both before and after the game. The result was a good 116 – 88 win for Cromer. A regular fixture against Kings Lynn saw the visitors arrive on a sunny morning by coach before going into town for lunch, mainly fish and chips I understand, and to search the charity shops for jigsaws. They returned to the club after a few hours in the town and although the afternoon turned slightly chilly it was a very friendly match. More so for the visitors who won 119 – 90. The winning triple for Cromer were newly appointed skip Phil the plasterer - long live the lager in the green can - who was ably supported by Phil the farmer and Joan – I haven’t got a special name for Joan! I will have to work on that. She just plays well all the time. There is no ladies league in the area and the number of ladies only games is very limited. However on Friday 17th June the ladies do play one of these few games when they travel to Thorpe Recreation BC in Norwich. We wish them all success.

I list below our forthcoming ‘Home’ fixtures that you may wish to come along, watch and enjoy.

Improved recycling and waste collection at three North Norfolk coastal resorts New bins introduced to cope with changing demand in types of litter. Sea Palling, Mundesley and Cromer have improved recycling and waste collection facilities thanks to a project funded by North Norfolk District Council. A range of different designs of bin have been installed at the coastal resorts in advance of the extra pressure of the summer tourism season. New solar bins are also being trialled in Wells. The improved recycling and waste collection facilities have been introduced in response to the changing demand in types of litter, especially fast-food packaging. Each style of bin has been chosen for specific reasons – whether it is to aid recycling (a condition of the Blue Flag scheme), deal with large volumes of waste in remote lo-
