Cromer honours those who fell at The Somme

Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

To mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, Cromer Town Council, Cromer Parish Church and the Royal British Legion invited individuals and organisations to participate in an 18-hour vigil, where they stood as an honour guard at the Cromer War Memorial in the grounds of the Parish Church in hourly intervals, commencing at 6pm on Thursday 30 June and continuing for 18 hours through the night ending at noon on Friday 1 July. Additionally, at 7.28am on 1 July, a whistle was blown three times to mark the time the British attack ‘went over the top’, one hundred years to the minute.

After the vigil a service of Remembrance, led by the Rev. James Porter, Vicar of Cromer, took place. The service concluded with the laying of wreaths, which were specially designed by the Royal British Legion to mark the 100th year since the Battle of the Somme.

Our Reputation is built on Recommendation

The Battle of the Somme took place from 1 July to 18 November 1916 and has come to symbolise the enormous losses and dreadful conditions of the First World War.

Every community across the UK was deeply affected by the loss of men who had gone to fight at the Battle of the Somme, including Cromer where it is believed that 17 of its men died as a result of the conflict.

Event organiser Cromer Town Councillor, David Pritchard said “Following-on from the success of the service and concert to mark the centenary of the commencement of World War One in August 2014, I was asked to organise a further event. There are so many significant dates 100 years on but, it seemed appropriate that the Battle of Somme should be marked in some way. With a similar event taking place at Westminster Abbey and other memorials around the country, I thought we should mark this important occasion in a similar mannerâ€?. Through the four years that mark the centenary, fund raising has been taking place to repair and renovate the Cromer War Memorial and having recently achieved the halfway mark of ÂŁ21,000, the War Memorial Fund Raising Committee is waiting to hear the outcome of their application for funding from the War Memorial Trust.

Cromer and District Foodbanks thanks two key volunteers

After three years as Treasurer, David Moore is stepping down to spend more time on his other work as a Cromer & District Foodbank volunteer. David now runs a distribution centre every week and is a dedicated driver picking up food and taking it out to distribution centres across the district.

“We want to express our gratitude to David – he has been a fantastic Treasurer and continues to commit so much of his time to the Foodbank, says Project Manager Ella King.

“We are also hugely grateful to Caroline O’Grady, who has volunteered to take on the role of Treasurer. Caroline joins us in a year that is seeing huge growth.

Since it was founded in 2012, the foodbank has built up a strong support network for local people in financial crisis, working with over 90 partner agencies to offer food and advice across 200 square miles of North Norfolk.

What a glorious month of incredible June weather we’ve just had! Guests and diners have been coming in sunburnt and sandy from hours of sunbathing on the packed sandy beaches, and we’ve even had a couple of people suffering from sunstroke following the extreme temperatures here in Cromer. Wouldn’t that be nice? Well despite the monsoon conditions we’ve been really busy at the Grove, with full rooms and restaurants enjoying wonderful seasonal produce from the garden and from John Davies and Icarus Hines in town (and

Holt Festival

Saturday 23 – Sunday 31 July

The Holt Festival has announced the full line up for the 2016 event. Described by Norwich Theatre Royal Chief Executive Peter Wilson as ‘One of the most important cultural events in Norfolk’, the award winning Festival is a glorious celebration of the arts and a jewel in the North Norfolk Crown.

Now in its eighth year, the Festival brings outstanding world class theatre, music, comedy, literature, children’s and visual art events to the picturesque Georgian town for eight days, from 23 to 31 July. Featuring a wealth of talent, this spectacular week of art and entertainment is testament to Artistic Director, Charles Pugh’s devotion to scouring the artistic world for performers who are exciting, interesting, sometimes challenging, sometimes nostalgic, but always entertaining.

CROMER & DISTRICT INDEPENDENT FUNERAL SERVICES

Charles said ‘This year our list of famous artists grows even longer: Gyles Brandreth, Colin Cloud, Julie Christie, Joanna Trollope, Kate Adie, Jenny Eclair, Mark Watson not to mention famous name bands from the rocking 60s, 70s and 80s. But of course fame is not the only kite mark of excellence. Diamonds shine very brightly in our programme, with some names to look out for in the future. Believe me they will not disappoint. Please explore and enjoy!’

A compassionate & caring service in your time of need. Private Chapel of Rest

Holt Festival also makes a substantial donation to the Holt Youth Project - one of England’s most imaginative, award winning youth schemes. Serving young people across north Norfolk, it prides itself on preventative programmes that allow young people to reach their full potential. This year’s donation will be used to fund Community Music East to work with young people to create a new show during Festival week.

Norfolk Jazz

Congratulations to Tom Clay-Harris. Tom has just graduated from a BMus jazz course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and will be playing at The Hub, Sheringham Little Theatre, on Sunday 17 July from 7.30pm. A talented young trumpet player from Norfolk, he has already stamped his mark on the jazz scene. He played with the Norwich Student Jazz Orchestra between 2006 and 2012 has been part of the Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra since 2012.

During his time in Scotland, he has become a respected figure in Glasgow for his lyrical and beautifully considered style. Tom cites Thad Jones, Miles Davies and Tom Harrell amongst his major influences. His programme will be a combination of familiar standards and originals. Working with Tom, who will be playing trumpet and flugelhorn, will be Simon Brown (piano), Ivars Galenieks (bass) and Brian McAllister (drums). They don’t come much better!

Overstrand Evening WI

The success of jazz at The Hub has encouraged Theatre Director, Debbie Thompson, to continue the programme throughout the summer and there will be two dates in August. It is important to note, however, that they will be on Monday nights instead of the usual Sunday evenings.

We can also let you know that the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band will be playing at a jazz picnic at West Runton Rectory on Wednesday 13 July from 6.30pm. (tickets from Connie Burchett on 01263 837647) and at the King’s Arms, Reepham, on Sunday 17 July at 12 noon (admission free but telephone 01603 870345 for lunch). The band will also be setting sail from Wroxham for a Broads Tours Jazz night on Thursday 21 July at 7.30pm. (Tickets from 01603 782207). Vic Brown

On Monday 8 August the Norfolk Jazz Quartet returns to the Hub and will be playing swinging jazz standards and music from the American Song Book. Our May meeting considered the resolutions that were to be taken to the WI Annual Meeting for voting on by delegates from the whole country. This takes place at the Royal Albert Hall each year. The two resolutions for discussion were one about food waste and food poverty, and the other about dementia care in hospitals. Two of our members gave a presentation on each resolution.

In June the Norfolk delegate returned to report back from the annual meeting on the discussions and the voting.

Nitrogen filled tyres give better road handling and reduced tread wear and puncture risk, as well as reduced rolling resistance to give improved MPG. The latest leverless tyre changer that will not damage your wheel - will handle from 8” up to 34” Free Tyre & Pressure check Friendly service with qualified technicians. Free Delivery & Collection service Viewing & Seating area with TV/Wifi Complimentary tea & coffee. Children welcome. Free wheel alignment check

The June meeting also included a walk along a route around the village, while the few non-walkers prepared the strawberries and cream supper.

We participated in the weekend of displays by Overstrand Village organisations held in St Martin`s Church. The display proved very popular with visitors to the Church, and showed the vast array of activities members can be part of, and also just how talented some of our members are.

Have your say on new council ward boundaries for two Norfolk councils

The independent Local Government Boundary Commission for England is asking local people for their help to draw up a new pattern of council wards for North Norfolk District Council and South Norfolk District Council.

The consultations are the first stage of and electoral review of each council, which will re-draw ward boundaries across both districts.

The Commission has also announced that it is minded to recommend that North Norfolk should have 40 councillors in future: a reduction of eight from the current arrangements.

The Commission has also agreed that South Norfolk should have 46 councillors in the future: the same as its current arrangements.

The Commission now needs information from local people and groups to help it to produce a new pattern of wards to accommodate councillors across both districts.

In drawing up new boundaries, the Commission aims to deliver electoral equality for voters in council elections so that each councillor represents roughly the same number of voters. The review also aims to ensure that the new council wards reflect, as far as possible, the interests and identities of communities across the districts.

Professor Colin Mellors, Chair of the

w No g in t Fit ated nt R ie ‘A’ effic s y sa rg ene indow ard w and st

Commission, said “We are asking local people and organisations to help us draw up new wards for North Norfolk and South Norfolk District Councils. As we develop the recommendations for each council, we will take into account local community identities as well as ensuring electoral equality for voters.

If you have a view about which communities or neighbourhoods should be part of the same council ward, then we want to hear from you. And if you think a road, river or railway makes for a strong boundary between communities in your part of your district, then this consultation is for you. Alternatively, if you are simply interested in the way your council is run, just log on to our website to explore our interactive maps and have your say.

Your views will make a difference.

We will carefully consider all evidence that is provided during this phase of the review whoever it is from and whether it applies to the whole of your district or just a small part of the it.

“Residents will then have a further chance to have their say after we publish our draft recommendations for both councils in November.”

Local people have until 5 September 2016 to submit their views. Further information on the

review and interactive maps of the existing wards can be found at www.consultation.lgbce.org.uk and www.lgbce.org.uk.

Rail tale is a platform for combined talents

The railway drama arriving at Sheringham Little Theatre this summer includes a handful of amateur actors enjoying the ride to gain experience of a professional summer season.

A 10-strong cast couples up six repertory pros with four local faces keen to learn from the journey.

It will happen during The Railway Children between 10 – 16 August - one of six plays during the venue’s summer drama season.

Director Amy Wyllie said the adaptation saw a tunnel and tracks on stage, and there would be sound effects but the locations, action and train were down to the cast to create with their descriptions and acting skills.

"Having local cast members is lovely - giving people who support the theatre all year round the chance to discover how rep works - by being part of it."

will play varied and multiple roles from housekeeper and cook to passengers and boys.

Ruth said "I am really looking forward to it. The story is one of my favourites - full of emotion and with a happy ending."

On Saturday 13 August there will be a chance to meet the acting cast, in character, at Weybourne station from 10.30am.

Discount deals for people visiting the show and the railway will be in operation.

The railway is also staging special drop-in activities for children, linked to the classic adventure story, during the stage show’s run.

Every day there will be fun events at the line’s three main stations.

At our Open Meeting national demonstrator Nick Grounds gave a most entertaining demonstration entitled ‘Junk and Disorderly’.

Nick has an original approach and delights in using plant material we may put in the bin.

An auctioneer by profession with a literary taste, Nick knows how to deliver his commentary to good effect, during which he creates wonderful arrangements using stunning flowers and interesting foliage.

After the demonstration, we had a lovely afternoon tea, which had been prepared by the Committee.

Noreen Howes gave the vote of thanks.

Our next meeting is on Monday 18 July at 7.20pm at Cromer Junior School when Barbara Collins will demonstrate ‘Summer Garden’. For further details please telephone 01263 513408.

Over the past year, a considerable amount of work has been carried out involving Abelio, Network Rail, West Coast Rail and the North Norfolk Railway to offer a number of special dining services to include Cromer. The North Norfolk Railway (NNR) is now able to confirm that the first of these services will operate on 10 August, the first being a VIP only trip followed by a tea train open to pre-booked customers. This will be followed by a lunch and tea train on 11 August, again pre bookable. A further two dates are also being planned for September those being 7th and 8th of the month.

The plan to operate through to Cromer from the North Norfolk Railway has meant upgrading the coaching stock and equipping one of the based steam locomotives with additional equipment required for mainline operations. The Railway has also had to hire a diesel locomotive, which is registered for mainline use, to haul the train to Cromer. The reason for this is that there are no facilities at Cromer to change the locomotive from one end of the train to the other, therefore the train will have a locomotive on both ends. The current plan will see the steam locomotive hauling the train from Cromer through to Holt. These special dining services will start from Sheringham and will be priced at £55 per person. The seats are now on sale and are bookable on line through the NNR website. The trains will depart for the full round trip at 12.00 for the lunch service and 17.00 for the tea trains.

Wide awake liposuction for body contouring

Laser liposuction under local anaesthesia

Liposuction means a major surgical procedure to most people. What is less well known is that it can be carried out in a safe, gentle and comfortable manner.

If I told you that you can have liposuction while listening to music and then walk out of the procedure room-would you believe me? Yes, it is possible and has been for a while.

Coltishall Clinic has been using lasers for liposuction for last many years. Recently we acquired the newest fat melting laser from Italy. Laser liposuction is a well-known and established procedure. What is unique about this laser is its ability to melt fat, which is 10 times more than the older lasers. This is the first such laser unit in use in the UK. We not only offer laser liposuction-we have a choice of lasers to select based on every patient’s unique characteristics.

Who is suitable for laser liposuction? Anyone with resistant pockets of fat that do not go away despite diet and exercise. You have to be in good general health without significant medical problems and near your ideal body weight. This is not a weight loss measure but a body sculpting or contouring treatment.

What areas are commonly treated? Mummy tummy, upper and lower abdomen, cheeks,

jowls and neck, love handles, muffin tops, hips, man boobs or moobs, upper arms, thighs, knees and most other body areas with localised collections of fat.

What happens during the procedure? You will have a medical consultation and treatment plan will be discussed. Dr Gheyi will then mark the area to be treated with you looking in the mirror. Your wishes and desires will dictate the extent of the procedure and this will be agreed beforehand. A detailed consent procedure will take place. Fine needles will be used to administer a very dilute solution of local anaesthesia while you will be chatting with the team. A tiny 0.6 mm laser fibre will then be introduced into the treatment area. The laser will be activated after you have worn the eye protection. You will not feel any pain. The laser will melt the fat. The procedure is stopped here for small areas of fat or to tighten lax skin. For larger area small stainless steel tubes (micro cannula) will be used to suck out melted fat. Following this, you will be able to stand up and look at your new body contour in a mirror. Compression garments will then be applied and you will be able to go home. You will need someone to drive you home.

What happens after the procedure? You will have dressings and tight compression garments for 24 hours. After this, the dressings can be removed and gentle compression used for

further 3-5 days. You are encouraged to go for a light walk and bed rest in not recommended. Most people return to normal activities within 2-5 days. Slight degree of soreness-similar to sore muscles after unaccustomed exercise is common.

So, if you have wanted liposuction but worry about general anaesthesia, hospitalisation or lengthy recovery period or bruising, give us a call on 0800 0430737 or log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk for more information.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Our lovely Harvey has now been confirmed as being FIV positive, so will be looking for a loving new indoor home, either as the only cat, or with another FIV positive cat. He is a favourite with all his carers as he is always so pleased to see them and cannot wait for them to give him a fuss and a cuddle. When you compare his photo now with the one taken shortly after his arrival, it is hard to believe it is the same cat. This lovely lad is not in the first flush of youth but will make an ideal companion for someone looking for an indoor cat. We are all keeping our fingers crossed that someone will come along and choose him soon.

Another recent addition to the cat pens is Bre, who joined us after a call from our vets. Bre is 13-14 years old and was taken to the vets to be put to sleep because she needed treatment, and although the person handing her over had been feeding her for 2 years they did not regard her as their cat. Bre already had one cauliflower ear and now had a nasty haematoma on the other one. Initial treatment to drain the haematoma was not successful so an operation was necessary. At the time of writing, this appears to be working but it is still early days so we will advise you how the treatment progresses next time. Bre is a lovely black and white haired cat and is in good

Latest round of Big Society Fund grants agreed

Groups encouraged to apply

The latest round of Big Society Fund grants have been agreed, with North Norfolk District Council supporting a wide range of groups, including allotment holders, cyclists, churchgoers and young people.

NNDC's Big Society Fund offers grants of up to £15,000 to voluntary and community organisations based in North Norfolk.

Since the fund started in 2012, well over £1,000,000 has been awarded to more than 150 community projects.

The committee which oversees the grants meets four times a year. This time they approved grants totaling more than £65,500. The awards are subject to each group agreeing to formal terms and conditions.

Phase 1 of the renovation of the village hall, which is construction of a new Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant toilet block.

• Thursford Parochial Church Council (£13,000) for Phase 3 of refurbishment of St Andrew’s Parish Church, which is provision and installation of a kitchen in the church.

• Withergate Rifle and Pistol Club (£6,000) for reconnection of the club to a mains electrical power supply.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and Cabinet Member for Big Society, said “The range of people being helped by this round of Big Society Fund grants is particularly notable. All ages will benefit and the diversity of the interest groups

is very wide. Health and wellbeing features across many of the groups being given grants, from allotments to cycling and smoothie bikes to a commons trust.

“I would encourage groups and organisations to put in an application for the next round. If you are not sure what to do, get in touch with us for advice, as we are keen to help as many groups and organisations as possible.”

If you have an idea or a project that you wish to develop and apply for funding, you are encouraged to speak to your local councillor and get in touch with the Council (via Sonia Shuter tel. 01263 516173, email supporting.communities@northnorfolk.gov.uk) or visit www.northnorfolk.org/bigsocietyfund

BSF grant awards in this round were awarded to:

• Briston Wanderers Football Club (£3,000) for four new goals and a pitch marking machine.

• Bodham Village Hall (£7,000) for the replacement and upgrade of toilet facilities at the village hall.

Carpets, Flooring and Blinds

• Active Fakenham (£3,872) for the purchase of a mobile health stall, three smoothie bikes and related equipment to promote healthy living and wellbeing.

• Stiffkey Parish Council (£572) so the Parish Council can fence off land they have recently leased for use as an allotment site. They will also buy a communal shed.

• Stiffkey Social Services Committee (£8,770) to buy and install play equipment and safety surfacing.

• Southrepps Parish Council (£2,230) so the Southrepps Commons Trust can purchase and install a storage container for equipment and tools, alarm and ancillary items.

• Activating CIC (£8,000) to create a PedalPark at Scottow Enterprise Park that will be the region’s only trafficfree cycle park providing recreational riding, coaching and competition opportunities to the local community regardless of age, current physical activity levels or level of cycling experience.

• Sea Palling with Waxham Parochial Church Council (£1,200) to make the access to both the church room and the Nissen Hut safe for people of all ages and all abilities, including those who rely on walking aids and wheelchairs.

Eloise O’Hare - A Norfolk Original

The lively, colourful, witty work of painter and illustrator Eloise O’Hare – Norfolk-born and now Norwich-based, though she grew up in Dublin and has travelled the world extensively – has become a great favourite with visitors to The Gallery Norfolk in Cromer.

She is now being honoured with her own exhibition at the gallery, to run from 16th July to 6th August. It will feature newly-painted pen and watercolour pictures of her favourite Norfolk coastal towns and villages, such as Wells-next-the-Sea, Blakeney, Wiveton, Cley, Sheringham, Mundesley and, of course, Cromer. There will be sweeping views of waterfronts, harbours and beaches, but Eloise will also show her eye for detail … quaint side streets, fascinating architectural features, beach huts, postboxes and doorways framed by trailing flowers. The pictures will range widely in both size and price (£95 - £395), offering plentiful opportunity for acquiring an original painting by one of Norfolk’s most distinctive artists.

Combining exhilarating spontaneity, expressed in surging washes of watercolour, with a draughtsman’s elegance in her expert use of pen and ink, Eloise creates paintings that are both joyous and thoughtful. She sees her work in musical terms, describing herself as an orchestrator and conductor and hoping that the birds she depicts “almost sing across the page.”

DON’T FORGET TO MENTION THE CROMER TIMES WHEN RESPONDING TO SERVICE GUIDE ADVERTS!

Weather predictions from Ned Nimbus for the next three months …

Unfortunately, the April to June predictions turned out to be very close to what happened, with only brief appearances of summery weather, thundery outbreaks when the sun did come out and some wide variations on a daily basis in temperature.

The next three months, July to September, will produce more of the same, although as we progress through the period there will be an increase in fine days, thundery weather will still be a threat, but a persistence of cold northerly winds will diminish. There will be more of a dominance of weather coming in from the Atlantic, which should favour us.

Rainfall totals will vary because of a continual threat of heavy thunderstorms following brief hot/very warm days. Cromer Times 497 July 9th 2016

The Bure Valley Railway really is a family friendly attraction in North Norfolk, with over 120,000 passengers every year, catering for both the young and older enthusiast alike. With events throughout the year, our next special event will be “Strawberries & Steam”, every weekend in July.

Andrew Barnes, Managing Director said: “Our volunteers get involved with the many aspects of running the railway and come from all walks of life. It is great to see all ages getting involved and being able to help the railway, but more importantly, enjoying their hobby. The Bure Valley Railway’s trains run daily, with our next event being ‘Strawberries & Steam’ during weekends in July, with free local strawberries and cream for every fare paying passenger.” Cromer Times 497 July 9th 2016

It’s what he would have wanted… By Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

The case of Peter Jones related to the preparation of a Statutory Will (ie one ordered to be made by the Court). The facts were as follows. J was 81 and suffered from dementia. He had been married to W for over 40 years and had one child, a 56-year old daughter (D) from a previous marriage, who lived in Canada. D had suffered from addiction, mental health problems and serious financial difficulties. J had only seen her once when she was 13, once again at 23 and again in the last year; otherwise they only had infrequent telephone contact. J’s estate was worth about £2.3million and he had no Will. If he died intestate, after allowing for the statutory legacy of £250,000 plus personal chattels for his W, W and D would each receive half of the remainder of his estate.

The case is interesting as it provides a helpful discussion of the structured decision-making process, the consultation required and the

principles applied in Statutory Will cases. There is not room to detail them here. It shows how such cases are heavily fact-dependent.

The Official Solicitor, for J, submitted that it was in J’s best interests that a Statutory Will was made to enable an independent professional executor to be appointed and to avoid the intestacy provision, which gave too much weight to D’s limited involvement in J’s life and failed adequately to provide for W, given their long marriage.

J was described as “an old-fashioned and authoritarian man”. He had intended that W and D would both benefit from his estate in due course, but preferred to retain control over his money and relationships for as long as possible. D had always loved him and they had a close and loving relationship until they separated. The absence of D’s visits was explained by her sensitivity, fragile mental health and financial circumstances, and by J’s inapproachability, rather than by lack of interest on her part. J loved D and had stated that he intended to include both D and W

in his Will.

The fact that J had not made a Will did not demonstrate that he wished to limit W’s inheritance to what she would receive under intestacy or Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975. It was likely that he intended to arrange for W to receive the greater part of his estate, whilst making reasonable financial provision for D.

It was considered improbable that J would not wish to benefit D. The receipt of funds by D would have a life-changing effect and no significant effect on J or W’s well-being.

It was decided that the estate should be split 25% for D and 75% for W. D’s benefit should be made up of a lifetime gift together with a legacy on J’s death with a combined value of £625,000. The immediate gift enabled the purchase of a home followed by a cash legacy when J died. The Court ordered that it was in J’s best interests that a lifetime gift and a Statutory Will were to be made accordingly.

COnSuLTATIOn RE MILL ROAD BuS SHELTER Following a recent inspection of Town Council owned assets and subsequent discussion, members would like to consult with the public as to the future of the bus shelter at the top of Mill Road (opposite the former Suffield Park Hotel). At present the shelter is in a very poor condition with damage to the roof, it smells strongly of urine and is rarely seen to be used by people waiting for the bus. It has also been recognised as a hot spot for anti-social behaviour.

The Town Council would therefore like to ask the following questions: Should the shelter be demolished? Yes / no If your answer to the above question is yes: Subject to budgetary and planning constraints, should the Town Council look into replacing the brick shelter with a modern metal/plastic shelter? Yes / no

Please send your replies in writing to the Town Council Office or by email to deputy@cromer-tc.gov.uk . Deadline for responses is 31 July 2016 Information on any meetings or matters arising can be obtained from the Town Clerk on 01263 512254.

An ‘Apportunity’ for Aylsham Norfolk town launches digital guide

Aylsham may be able to trace its roots back over 1500 years but it is coming right up to date with a digital-age initiative from Aylsham Business & Enterprise Forum (ABEF).

Believed to be the first of its kind in East Anglia, the Aylsham App – available to android and iPhone operating systems – will provide local residents and visitors with an invaluable guide to the town, its facilities, events, businesses and other organisations. Developed by local company Norfolk Geeks, the App is joined by a newly-designed website, www.discoveraylsham.org with interaction

between the two allowing individual companies and organisations to update their own entries. The App, when downloaded, is also designed to be useable without wi-fi or mobile data, a valuable feature in an area where a reliable connection is not always available.

ABEF Chair, Monica Harding, comments “The App is a very important development for the town and as far as we know, the first of its kind in East Anglia. With financial support, on top of ABEF’s own funds, from Broadland District Council, Aylsham High School and Aylsham Town Council, Norfolk Geeks have been able to develop a state-of-the-art facility which will

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club Tales from the Bowling Green ...

… oh please when will the weather improve?

With so much rain, bowling greens have remained very ‘heavy’ which is not what bowlers like. They may look green but from a playing point of view that is not always good. Having said that, I must congratulate our bowling green maintenance team of Neil, Jackie, Bob and Phil in keeping the Marrams green in such a good condition.

The Norfolk Bowls Association Wednesday evening team travelled to Cawston to play Reepham Nomads and, on one of those very wet greens, lost 2 – 3. This was followed by a home game against Lakeside Pilgrims which unfortunately resulted in another 2 – 3 defeat. Both were close games in fact where Cromer won two of the three rinks played but lost on points as the third rink lost by more shots than the winning two won by!

The County Federation Premier (West) team entertained Fakenham Town and lost 0 – 9. I was very surprised as, despite the team being slightly under strength, I was expecting a close match and to finish the game with no points

to win 7 – 2.

We have entertained two teams from Leicestershire in the last fortnight.

Friday 8 July 2pm Mundesley BC : NANSA League game

Saturday 9 July 2pm Aldiss Park BC, Dereham : Mixed triples game

Tuesday 12 July 6.45pm Lakeside Pilgrims BC : Federation County League game

The second visitors were from Houghton on the Hill BC and again accommodation in the town had been arranged. A beautiful sunny afternoon saw a very friendly game of triples take place. The next day they were to play Hunstanton BC on their way back home.

The health and fitness classes are designed to support people who have trouble doing standing exercise or who enjoy a gentle work-out while sitting down.

Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing said “These classes are great to get you stronger, fitter and healthier - and you’re having fun at the same time. I would encourage anyone to have a go at seated exercise – it’s great for people of any age and any level of fitness.”

The exercise classes are at : • Holt Library on Mondays 10am -10.45am • Cromer Library on Thursdays 2pm - 2.45pm and • Sheringham Library on Fridays 2pm - 2.45pm

Mon 11 July – 10.30am - Cromer Town & Views Walk – Grade 2 to 3 – Approx. 2.8 miles – A walk with moderate/steep gradients on pave-

I list below our forthcoming ‘home’ fixtures that you may wish to come along, watch and enjoy.

Longthorpe BC have been coming to Cromer for over 10 years and once again a wonderful afternoon was had by all. The visitors stayed overnight in various hotels and B & B and enjoyed the hospitality of the town before the game. After staying a second night they were to play the following afternoon at Sheringham Morley BC. A benefit to both clubs and both towns.

North Norfolk District Council is running seated exercise classes in Sheringham, Cromer and Holt for only £1 per session.

Please arrive 20 mins early if you are new to Fit Together. For more information contact Melanie Brown on 07766 259999.

You may recall the game with Bowls England I mentioned last time. The President will bring a team of players from all over England to play in this Celebration Game. I already know that the Bowls England Immediate Past President from Hertfordshire will be playing as will three players from Somerset including their County Secretary. Their playing Captain for the day will be Peter Cottee a previous Norfolk County President in 2013. The game will be a mixed game of 6 rinks starting at 2pm played over 21 ends followed by a buffet for all players. It will be in my list of forthcoming fixtures next time and your support will be appreciated.

The NANSA team only had one game scheduled in this last period, against Felmingham but that was cancelled by the opponents. Useless factoid - Jack used to be in P J Proby’s fan club, because he really hoped to get a shirt like his hero.

Seated exercise classes help North Norfolk citizens get fitter for £1!
