Swim Safe - don’t get caught in a Rip

Advice issued by the RNLI Happisburgh following the tragic events at the end of July at Sea Palling.

Rip Currents are strong currents running out to sea. They can take you from the shallows very quickly and leave you out of your depth.

If you are caught in a Rip: • Stay calm, don’t panic • If you can stand, wade – don’t try to swim • If you have an inflatable or board, keep hold of it to help you float • Raise your hand and shout for help loudly • Don’t swim directly against the Rip or you will get exhausted • Swim parallel to the beach until free of the Rip, then make for the shore

St Margaret's Thorpe Market Recycling

St Margaret’s Church, Thorpe Market has recycled since the 1980s. Starting with a paper bank in the stable (what a fire hazard in retrospect) loaded by a chain of volunteers, progressing to the current recycling centre on the church car park. Glass and paper are collected in more or less equal amounts totalling 20 tons each year. We are also happy to be hosting a Clothing Bank on behalf of the Salvation Army.

The reward to church funds is the Landfill Tax Rebate from the government amounting to over ÂŁ50 a ton. It goes without saying that we welcome all donations of glass and papers. This is a vital part of the equation to help our small village church survive. We are very grateful to all who support this aspect of church-life.

‘The skips now on our car park have an appetite that's great, So pop your glass and papers in, we do appreciate. It helps us raise some money, to keep us from the ‘red’ So please, not in your wheelie bins, but in our skips instead! We'd love your glass and papers, contributions great and small, For us they mean REAL money, so let us have them all!

Peter’s daredevil wing walk brings over £1000 to About With Friends

Peter White is a member of the Cromer-based charity About with Friends, who support adults with learning disabilities.

Peter works in their Community Shop in Garden Street twice a week and attends social activities with the group. When he heard that they needed to replace their ageing minibus with a new one, Peter decided he wanted to do something for the organisation that supports him. He had already parachuted out of a plane to raise money for another charity but this time Peter chose to be strapped to the top wing of a biplane and fly over the Gloucestershire countryside.

Peter admits he was very nervous about making the wing walk and almost dropped out especially when the first date was cancelled due to a poor weather forecast. However, when the day came, Peter rose to the challenge and rose to the skies. Afterwards Peter joked that if he ever suggested wing-walking again he wanted someone to shoot him in the leg! His incredible effort has so far earned ÂŁ1100 for About with Friends and sponsorship money is still coming in.

About with Friends is a fun, active and energetic charity based in Cromer. We offer children, young people and adults with learning disabilities the chance to lead the lives they choose. When they become part of our family they have opportunities to develop lasting friendships, engage in fun and active social activities, get involved in the community, have the chance to try new experiences, learn new skills both for life and work but above all feel a valued part of society while enjoying life to the full.

Tragic call out at Sea Palling Cromer Sheringham - only

Happisburgh R.N.L.I. Lifeboat Station volunteers were called into action at 11:30am, when the pagers sounded. Two crews were on Station and afloat by 11:40am. The Spirit of Berkhamsted, the Station’s D Class, with Charlotte Siely at the helm and Tim Grimmer and Martin Gibbs as crew and the Atlantic 75 (Joan Mary) with Tony Phenix as helm and Will Baker and Gabby Hawker as crew. Reports were that two people had been pulled unconscious from the sea at Sea Palling with unknown other casualties. The D Class arrived 9 minutes later between Reefs 3 & 4, Sea Palling and the boat was run ashore and all the crew went to the aid of the two unconscious casualties. The Atlantic searched the sea for any other persons in the water before putting Tony Phenix ashore to help with casualties. There was one unconscious male, but breathing; the second male was also unconscious but not breathing

for himself (and subsequently did not survive). There was an off-duty doctor and fireman working together with RNLI Lifeguards, trying to preserve life. There were two other minor casualties with ’near drowning’ symptoms also being attended to . It appears that the four were swimming between the beach and the reef, when they were caught by a rip tide; a young male, aged approximately 14 had gone into the water and pulled the two unconscious casualties onto the beach, while others called for help. An Air Ambulance landed on the beach and worked with the Lifeboat crew, then the Humber Coastguard helicopter landed, followed by a second Air Ambulance with Coastguards and other emergency services. The unconscious, but breathing casualty, was taken by Air Ambulance to Norfolk & Norwich Hospital. The two casualties with ‘near drowning’ symptoms were taken by Ambulance to hospital.

Interested in becoming a crew member at Happisburgh?

The other casualty was transferred to an Ambulance by Happisburgh D Class. The crew sorted out their equipment and returned to Station, being ready for service at 3pm. This was the first call-out for both Martin Gibbs and Gabby Walker, also the first time Charlotte Siely had helmed the D Class on a call-out. Senior Helmsman, Tim Grimmer said “The 14yr-old boy was very brave and quickthinking and gave the two men the best chance of survival but he could have been the third casualty. If you see someone in trouble in the sea or any water call 999 and ask for the Coastguard; avoid entering the water yourself”.

The charity welcomes people from all walks of life and no previous sea-going experience is needed to join the lifeboat crew. The RNLI provides fantastic training to turn ordinary people into lifesavers. By volunteering with the RNLI people will gain some great experience, knowledge and skills.

Happisburgh RNLI is always looking for new volunteers to help run the lifesaving service. If you are aged 17 or over, physically fit, work or live within 10 minutes of the lifeboat station and eager to join a lifesaving organisation then please come by and say hello.

Inshore Boat house open to public

Cromer has a long record of saving those who lives and or boats were in peril. The Cromer Lifeboat Station was established in 1804 and was not taken over by the Institution from the Norfolk Shipwreck Association until 1857. In 1858 the RNLI placed its first lifeboat on service, a 34ft Peake class boat, built at a cost of £176. In 1868 a new

Inner Wheel

lifeboat station was constructed in 1868 at a cost of £476. This remained in use until 1902 when a new boathouse was constructed to house the new lifeboat and carriage (making it easier to launch), costing £525. At one time it housed a museum until the Henry Blogg Museum was opened. The boathouse remains a working station housing the Inshore Lifeboat D734 George and Muriel.

The many visitors to Cromer are interested in the history of Cromer and its role within the RNLI and it

The Cromer & Sheringham Inner Wheel ladies met during the summer at The Virginia Court Hotel for the monthly meetings and AGM. We all enjoyed a garden party to celebrate The Queens 90th birthday at member Jane's home at Kelling Heath. Jane provided good food and lovely summer weather. On July 13th we all met at Hamptons Restaurant in Bawdswell to say thank you to our president Carol for all she has done this year; Shay presented her with a gift and flowers. Carol then thanked everyone for all the support she had received during the year and said that £425 had been raised for her chosen charity The Big C. Our next Social event will be a barbecue on 20th August at Rita Holland's home – this is the president’s gift to us to say thank you.

Maureen Ford MBE (standing) and Sybil Taylor, members of the club.

The next Club meeting will be on September 1st when Carol Selwyn will continue to be President for the coming year. We share a meal together at the Virginia Court Hotel in Cromer each month with a guest speaker afterwards. We have a lot of fun, enjoy fellowship and try to support those in need in this country and abroad. Our membership is open to any women who would be interested in joining us. For more information about our Inner Wheel club then please contact Carol Selwyn on 01263513717.

has been decided to open this boathouse to the public at weekends between 10 and 1pm. Obviously if the boat is needed it will absent!

Billy Gaff (Deputy Launch Authority for Cromer RNLI and a fisherman) said: ‘A lot of visitors look at the building and the noticeboards, now we are giving them the opportunity to see a working station at closehand’

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?

“It’s a common misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor, qualified Family Mediator and Collaborative solicitor.

As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. The common misconception is that a larger local firm or city firm is better but this is incorrect. A client just pays more.

When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I am one of the few solicitors that offffers a free first appointment so that clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision.

I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

John once brought a whole pail in, only to find an hour later one of the kitchen porters hacking away at them with a potatoes peeler. CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY

We hosted this year’s annual gardening quiz with members from the Hoveton/Wroxham and Sheringham societies. Nearly sixty people organised into teams of four fought out a hotly contested but always friendly quiz with a team from Sheringham winning by just one point in the end. Our thanks must go to the Cromer members who provided food for the evening and to our guests from the other two societies for making it a successful and very enjoyable evening. Twenty five members went on a visit to Corpusty Mill Garden at the beginning of July. This delightful garden is the work of Roger Last. He has turned what was five acres of water meadow into a series of formal gardens, water features and garden follies. Two vantage points allow the whole garden to be viewed from above and although it was a warm and sunny afternoon the views from the top made the climb worthwhile. If you have the chance to visit the garden then I suggest you take advantage of it as it is a little gem.

SUMMER BOHO

2016 marks the sixtieth anniversary of the Cromer and District Garden Society and to mark this occasion forty members visited the garden at East Ruston on a pleasant July evening. We were joined by our president, Bill LeGrice. After a cake made to mark the anniversary was cut we were able to stroll around the gardens for over Irene Nutt cutting the cake at our sixtieth two hours and take advantage of what is one of celebration at East Ruston. Irene is a Norfolk’s premier gardens. To walk around when you long standing member of the society and more or less have the garden to yourself was a delight. her father was a founder member in 1956. It proved to be a fitting way to celebrate this landmark in the society’s history. Our September meeting will be taken up with the members’ autumn show. It is always well supported and kicks off the second half of this year’s programme. In October we have a talk on crocuses and other small bulbs for all seasons and in November after our AGM we will have a presentation promoting the work of Norfolk Wildlife Trust. Visitors are always welcome. Meetings take place on the second Wednesday of each month in the Community Hall in Cromer.

North Norfolk District Council supports Great British High Street competition Council encourages communities to enter villages and towns into competition celebrating great work being done to boost UK’s high streets

said “I would urge everyone to get involved to showcase the hard work of our local communities in keeping North Norfolk’s high streets thriving.

• • • • • • •

Last year’s competition, run by the Department for Communities and Local Government, saw a recordbreaking 230 entries and attracted over 200,000 public votes. With new categories and new prizes, including the chance to win up to £ 10,000 each, the organisers expect even more entries this year.

As well as the cash prize, winners will also receive dedicated support and mentoring from industry experts that could range from one-to-one coaching to advice on digital marketing.

The four competition categories for individuals are: • Best Store Manager or Employee from a National Retailer / Organisation • Best Store Manager or Employee from an Independent / Small Business • Best Market Manager, Operator, Farmer or Trader • Best under 25 year old, manager or employee from a high street business

The Great British High Street competition recognises steps being taken to revive, adapt and diversify the nation’s high streets and is an opportunity for businesses, community groups and volunteers to learn from experts.

Overstrand Evening WI.

Members welcomed Kindra Jones to their July meeting and were treated to a delightful talk on Henry VIII`s 6 wives and Tudor fashions It was an `illustrated` talk as Kindra came dressed for the part. She was dressed in the underwear of a Tudor Queen, but later in the talk demonstrated how the top layers and outer garments were added. A members great niece, attending the meeting, was used as a model to show the sort of dress, including headwear, that the lower class women of the Royal household would have worn. It was good to be reminded of such a turbulent time in our History in such an entertaining way. The competition this month was your oldest possession, which was won, by about 4 million years, by a members ammonite!

The new Planter to commemorate the WI`s centenary is in place on Fishermans Green and members were reminded of the ribbon cutting ceremony arranged for prior to the August meeting which will be on the 2nd Wednesday of the month not the 3rd. And still in celebratory mood, members will be making bunting with materials provided.

We welcome visitors and prospective new members (you don`t have to be an Overstrand resident to join us, or talented!) to our walks and monthly meetings. Our meetings are usually on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand.

demonstrations, falconry, agricultural displays, and a Scarecrow Competition with a Cromer Theme. On a beautiful sunny July afternoon, the Strand Club welcomed Sheena and Bob of the Memory Joggers.

Please note a percentage of all bucket takings will be donated to local Cromer Scouts and Guides.

To find out more about all of the events happening during Cromer Carnival, go to the website www.cromercarnival.co.uk

This organisation was initiated just three years ago and since that time, has trained over 80 nurses and care workers to use reminiscence techniques mostly with dementia sufferers and the elderly to enable them to remember their past.

Sheena and Bob have been awarded funding to open a training academy for members of the public, which is based in Great Yarmouth. This will enable the vital message to spread as widely as possible. This busy couple has been training staff at the James Paget Hospital and have contacted many care homes in order to train the staff there too.

We were very lucky to have them with us and they brought along tables full of all sorts of interesting items for us to guess their use. We recognised butter pats, darning mushrooms, a liberty bodice, an old-fashioned razor and were introduced to many weird and wonderful gadgets, including something to crush oranges preparatory to making marmalade, a special porridge stirrer called a spurtle and wood working tools. Sheena and Bob had a fund of funny anecdotes, which kept us amused and interested until tea time! Tea was particularly enjoyable this month as Josie had made us some shortbread.

The Strand Club has set up the public access defibrillator situated on the wall of the White Horse pub in the High Street in Overstrand with a new battery. This was funded from the bank account opened by the Strand Club and now run by the Friends of Overstrand and Cromer Community First Responders.

After discussion, it was agreed to change the starting time for future meetings from 2.30pm to 2pm. As there will be no meeting in August we will meet in the Pavilion as usual on 14 September for our cream tea and bring and buy.

Visitors will be welcome to our jewellery party on 12 October and will pay just £2 at the door to cover tea and biscuits. Raffle tickets are available separately throughout the afternoon.

Pirate Hook’s holiday horror

Even the baddest of baddies needs a break sometimes, me hearties!

But when evil storybook pirate Capt Hook takes a holiday at Sheringham to get some sun into his shivering timbers … his plundering past begins to catch up with him.

The result is a swashbuckling fun show for children at the town's Little Theatre as a summer prequel to Hook's return in the Peter Pan panto later in the year.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: "We had the idea of Hook wanting a holiday from pirating, so he can enjoy a rest and read a good book. But the captain finds other pirates have also booked into the resort to take a break from their storylines.”

Who is Hook? The role of Captain James Hook will be played in both shows by Norfolk born performer Neil Paris. The 48-year-old is a freelance dance theatre artist, who acts, choreographs and teaches. He said: "Hook is a villain, who are always good fun to play. The role is physical, there is song and I love interaction with the audience."

Norwich-born Neil's first job after leaving Thorpe St Andrew High school was as an apprentice cabinetmaker at Arthur Brett and Sons. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We have now been running our special £5 neutering campaign for more than a year and many people have taken up the offer. Although this does mean there will be less unwanted kittens being born there are still too many out there needing to come into care and being offered for sale. We usually ask the person where they obtained their cat/kitten to see if we can offer assistance to other cats/kittens from the same family. Very often they have been obtained from websites and the people concerned often comment on the poor condition of their new pet and the place it has come from.

Looking on line, we are amazed at the claims being made by the people who advertise there and know that these websites are working with other organisations to investigate the claims being made by the sellers and also identify people who are selling cats and kittens for profit.

Some cats and kittens are advertised as pedigree crosses when it is obvious they are not. Some also charge a higher amount for kittens of a certain colour which leads us to believe they could possibly be letting their cats have kittens to make money. To us, the colour of the cat is not important; it is far more important to ensure it is healthy and what its character and temperament is. So often we find it is ‘the little black kitten’ in the litter that charms us all and is the one we would love to offer a home to.

Adverts for kittens very often state they are litter trained. Although you may find the odd kitten might need to be encouraged to use a litter tray, the majority will find their way there without any guidance from the mother or their carers. Claims are also made that the cat/kitten has been treated for fleas and worms but so often people tell us that it is not the case. Mention of vaccinating, micro chipping and being checked by a vet to ensure they are healthy are very rare indeed but very important.

Although you may not get your cat or kitten from us we do hope that this information will help ensure that you give a home to a healthy, well adjusted animal and you are not encouraging someone to breed kittens for profit. We will continue to run our neutering campaign and in time we do hope this will mean there are less cats and kittens out there, unwanted and needing our help to find loving new homes. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. Get set for summer with Animal Magic Dog Club Now that the warmer weather is finally here, we are all looking forward to enjoying the summer but please remember that dogs can suffer from the same problems that we do from over exposure to the sun. This includes dehydration, sunburn and heatstroke - which can be fatal.

Here are our Animal Magic top tips for a safe summer with your dog: • Don’t leave your dog in the car – even in the shade with windows open the temperature can soar turning your car into an oven very quickly. Remember - dogs die in hot cars. • Try to walk your dog in the cool of the morning or evening and if you really must walk at lunchtime choose a sheltered lane or wood. Never allow your dog to exercise excessively in hot weather. • Consider having your dog’s coat clipped for the summer, most breeds seem to really appreciate this. • Your dog will enjoy a shady spot to lie in but during the hottest part of the day they might be more comfortable indoors. • If your dog goes off their food try to feed them later in the evening when

it is cooler and you will usually find their appetite returns. • Make sure your dog always has a supply of clean drinking water. Always carry water with you on hot days, and give your dog frequent small amounts. • Most dogs enjoy a paddle, swim or game with the hosepipe. It’ll help them keep cool, but after fun in the water always dry their ears and under collars to avoid irritations. but most of all enjoy a fun and safe summer with your dog!

Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. For more information on the club and classes available please call Kathy on 01263 720730 or visit our web site www.animal-magix.co.uk

Keeping it in the Family By Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

Looking after one’s elderly, incapable or vulnerable family members is natural and has happened forever. Many would consider it outside the interference of the legal system. Being paid within the family has always taken place on an informal basis, especially where someone has given up work to look after a relative and needs money to live on whilst they do so.

In the 2015 case of Re HNL Senior Judge Lush lifted reporting restrictions and set in motion the issue of this guidance. In that case he commended the family on the ‘exemplary care’ which was provided on a ‘significantly cheaper’ basis than commercial care. Previously, he had held that the rate paid should be no more than the going commercial care but with a 20% reduction, largely to reflect the fact that no income tax is payable on FCPs. Inflation-proofing was authorised in advance so as to reduce the cost of returning to Court for a review.

These days ‘Family Care Payments’ (FCPs) or ‘gratuitous care payments’ are the formal terms for such arrangements. The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) has increasingly been requiring Deputies to seek authorisation to such packages. Its approach in the past has been over-zealous. The OPG has recently published useful guidance in the form of a practice note setting out the legal framework and the OPG’s approach to such payments. This applies only to Court of Protection appointed Deputies under a Finance and Property Order. It does not yet apply to the same sort of arrangements made in other circumstances.

It is good to see such a common-sense approach to an age-old situation.

“This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to

When family members provide informal care for an individual lacking mental-capacity, it may involve anything from small scale care or providing companionship, to full-time care. The kind of care arrangement that might justify a FCP includes situations where there would not normally be any formal contractual relationship between the person and the family member providing care, as that care is given out of their natural love and affection.

Although not applicable to those with Lasting or Enduring Powers of Attorney (LPAs and EPAs), the note is useful to families making bestinterests decisions in similar situations.

The new guidance explains the OPG’s position on FCPs that Deputies make to such family members who provide care. It defines the arrangements and sets out the Deputy’s authority to make payments; including factors to consider when agreeing and calculating such payments. The OPG considered that FCPs can be in the person’s best interests, providing the FCP is properly set up and managed. The care must be of a good standard and required by the person in question. Guidance is provided as to increases in payments and record keeping.

Matters to be taken into account include: the care actually given, affordability, other contributions made to household upkeep, savings on the cost of commercial care and the overall family situation. Other family members should be consulted, wherever possible.

North Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery is showcasing a new exhibition of animal portraits by local artist Alison Argent. The new exhibition uses pastels to capture the likeness and personality of a series of pets.

Alison said “I have been combining my love of art with my love of animals to produce portraits in pastels, a favourite medium that I find especially suitable for capturing the qualities of animals.”

Alison has lived and worked in Norfolk for over 30 years, moving here from Leicester. With a passion for drawing and painting, and achieving a Foundation Course at Loughborough College of Art and Design, Alison has recently returned to creating animal portraits. She added “My aim is to produce not just a picture of an animal but a portrait of a particular animal, capturing its likeness and character.”

Capturing Characters: An exhibition of animal portraits in pastel opens July 19 and runs at NNDC’s gallery until August 19.

NNDC seeks to offer free opportunities to local artists to display their work in the 1st Floor Gallery in the Council’s Holt Road offices in Cromer. Currently six exhibitions are held annually. Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said “It’s great to be able to offer artists a space to exhibit their works. It is often the boost they need to gain a wider audience. Capturing Characters is a super collection of pictures and we are pleased to be able to host them.”

The NNDC Gallery is open to the public on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8.30am – 5pm, Wednesday 10am – 5pm and Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm.

Norwich City's Championship Campaign

Norwich City pre-season so far and transfers update by Joel Lodge

game of the Austrian tour was against Dukla Prague, which unfortunately ended in 3-1 loss for Norwich against the well drilled Croatian side. Against Rubin Kazan however, Norwich fared better as they managed to beat the Russian side 2-1 in what was a well-fought victory against the 2 time Russian champions.

After the stress of a tough season in the Premier league last year, the Norwich City squad re-grouped in late June to prepare for the promotion battle in the Championship next year. After a 6-week break for all the players who didn’t play at the Euro’s the players have come back looking quite fresh after judging the opening friendlies of pre-season. Norwich started off their pre-season campaign in positive fashion with a 2-1 win in a behind closed doors friendly vs. Walsall, followed by a 3-0 win away at a rather poor Peterborough side. Norwich then travelled to their weeklong training camp in Austria with 2 friendly matches against FK Dukla Prague and Rubin Kazan respectively. The first

As for the transfer window, Norwich have only sold two players in this transfer window with Nathan Redmond being sold to Southampton at the start of the transfer window for 11 million pounds and Jake Kean going to Sheffield Wednesday, the highest transfer fee Norwich have ever received for a player. After the sales of Redmond and Kean, Norwich needed a new right

winger and a new goalkeeper to provide competition with John Ruddy and Declan Rudd; this is why Liverpool youngster Sergi Canos came in to replace Redmond after starring on loan at Brentford in the Championship last season and the young winger comes in with a high reputation and a lot of promise as he will attempt to fill the void left by Redmond, meanwhile, Jake Kean has been replaced by the hero of Northern Ireland at the Euro’s, Michael McGovern who starred in particular against Germany as he put in a stellar performance in an attempt to keep Northern Ireland in the game.

Open your diaries and get your kids booked in for a summer of amazing NNDC sports and activities! North Norfolk District Council is taking the stress out of summer with a planned timetable of fun for you and your family.

No need to pull your hair out trying to keep the kids engaged this summer because NNDC’s Sports and Countryside staff have created a fantastic programme of events.

Cycling, football, nature trails, pirates, American sports, butterfly identification, dodgeball, trampolining, archery, street dance, marine conservation, rounders, rifle shooting and a special beach Olympics day are just a few of the options. And they are all amazing value, starting at just £2.50 for a session.

There are also beach activities at East Runton, Cromer, Mundesley and West Runton, while Challenge 22 offers a whole week of fun games, sports and activities at North Walsham Sports Centre from August 8-12, finishing with an adventure activity trip on the Friday. The week is fantastic value at £90

for more than 30 hours of sports and games.

Cllr Becky Palmer, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said “This year’s range of summer activities is incredible. Whether your kids want to test mind or body – their aim, dodging, speed or team skills, whether they fancy a go at trampolining or shooting, Capture the Flag or survival in the wild, we’ve got it all.

“Many activities can be booked in advance, so don’t leave it too late, book today to make sure your kids have a great summer. The activities run through to the end of August. They are aimed at different age groups plus some activities for the whole family. A detailed brochure can be found at http://ow.ly/zEKR302eW58 and to book go here www.northnorfolk.org/book. Cromer Marrams Bowls Club

become thick and dense. Ideal if you want a little ball or bowl to roll smoothly across it! However, nothing is forever, and at some point the parent grass plant and some stolons and rhizomes die to be replaced by younger stronger plants. The problem is that the growing part of the grass plant (crown) together with the stolons and rhizomes contain a chemical compound called lignin which makes them very slow to rot or decay. And because they don’t rot they start to build up, layer upon layer until there is too much. This is thatch! It makes a bowling green spongy and that is most certainly not what a bowler wants. Hence we scarify. To remove the thatch. Here endeth lesson one, “swishing” next time. The Federation league team had an excellent win against Lakeside Pilgrims at home 9 – 0. However the next week away at South Lynn things went wrong and the result was a disappointing 2 – 7 loss. The Ladies Rose Bowl Competition has been played. It used to be for ladies only but unfortunately although we have recruited a number of excellent new lady members our number are still quite small. The competition for the last 2/3 years has been played as a mixed pairs competition, with the pairing ‘drawn’ at random. This year the winners were Bernice Billington and Keith

Tales from the Bowling Green ...

…where ‘sun’ and ‘sprinklers’ seem to be the words of the week. So hot but surely we must not complain. But then again how much water does the bowling green want. Differing views. We leave it to Neil and Bob. The Wednesday evening team travelled to R G Carter at Drayton and didn’t do very well. Well they are a good side. We did get a point, but lost 4 so the deal was not too good. Then it was Fakenham at home. With our green playing well a reasonable result was hoped for but we lost 1½ - 3½. That was better than the away result. Then the team travelled to Holt. Once again one of the rinks drew and one lost so the result was 1½ - 3½. It means we are picking up some points but not as many as we would have wished. Finally at home against Reepham Nomads and even the visitors said how well the green was ‘running’. So well in fact that they played better than us and Cromer lost 1 – 4. Now last time we set a question, but I suspect if anyone was interested they would have found out by now. However there may be a few readers, who like a number of our members you have technology but do not use it. So here goes “scarifying”. Scarifiers use steel blades to cut out thatch; hence it is also known as de-thatching. Thatch by its very nature is removed more easily by this cutting action and the result is a firmer green that allows the passage of air, nutrients and water easily into it. Take scarifying a step further by letting the scarifier blades cut into the soil and you will open the soil surface and make an ideal seed bed for introducing new grass seed to the green. What is “thatch”? Well….grasses propagate by seed with some also producing side shoots or runners. These side shoots help the grass spread and are either just above the soil surface (stolons) or just below it (rhizomes). This ‘spreading’ helps the turf knit and

Mon 8 Aug – 10.30am - Cromer/East Runton Walk – Grade 3 – Approx. 3.2 miles – a walk with moderate gradients on dirt, gravel, grass and minor roads. Meet at the NNDC Car Park, (Parking charges apply), Runton Rd, Cromer (OS Grid: TG211423) Tues 9 Aug – 5.30pm - Northrepps Cottage

Pantling. Congratulations to both. Finally in the leagues the NANSA team played at Weybourne and drew 4 – 4. The club played a friendly at Horsham St Faiths. It was called ‘Roving Cot’. In other words cast the cot (it’s what they call the little white ball) anywhere on the green, not just in straight up and down rinks like we play normally. Challenging but fun as well. We lost by 2 shots. There was an early challenge to find the green, it was next to the allotments! Keith alleges he can ‘water divine’. Get some twigs and when he is close to water they start to vibrate. Some other club members agreed with him. Umh! On Carnival Day come along and try your hand at scoring points and winning prizes. Fun for all the family on the green.

I list below our forthcoming ‘Home’ fixtures that you may wish to come along, watch and enjoy. Most league fixtures have now come to an end so it is friendly or club competitions now.

Tuesday 9th August 2.00pm Sheringham Morley BC: Ladies triples game

Wednesday 10th August 2.00pm Horsham St Faiths BC: Mixed triples game
