Excellence by design – Graham Allen Awards shortlist announced
North Norfolk District Council releases prestigious awards shortlist of 2016 design heroes
The Graham Allen Award is presented annually by NNDC to the project considered to make the most significant contribution to the built environment within the district.
Cllr Sue Arnold, Cabinet Member for Planning said “This is the 35th year of North Norfolk District Council’s Graham Allen Award and the standard of entries has been excellent. The shortlist covers a wide range of very interesting design projects each with strong, specific merits and all a great contribution to our built environment and the awards themselves.
The shortlisted entries are: • CROMER, Bus Station, Prince of Wales Road - erection of new bus shelter • CROMER, Victoria Heights, Roughton Road - restoration and conversion of former hospital into four houses and 21 flats • EAST RUSTON, Running Hare Barn, Mill Road - restoration and conversion of former threshing barn into holiday let • NORTHREPPS, The Stable Yard, Rectory Lane - restoration and conversion of stable block into new dwelling • PENSTHORPE, Pensthorpe Natural Park, Hootz House - erection of new 300m2 play barn • SHERINGHAM, Sheringham Station, Station Approach - erection of replacement rail station TIC, public conveniences and retail shop • STALHAM, Portalfield - erection of 19 sheltered housing units
Originally inaugurated in 1982 as a memorial to the late Graham Allen, the first Chairman of NNDC, the awards scheme has recognised a diverse selection of north Norfolk’s finest architecture.
Winners have ranged from the extension to Binham Priory, to the refurbishment of the Gunton Arms, Thorpe Market.
Last year’s overall winner was Manor Farm Barns in The Street, Kettlestone. The barns are on the main entrance to the village and had been lying derelict for some time. The project involved the complete restoration and refurbishment of the barn complex into four new homes. The scheme successfully used traditional materials and to retain the character and original charm of the barns.
The shortlisted projects will now undergo site visits from the judging panel made up of NNDC’s Development Committee and Edward Allen, son of Graham. The award winner, highly commended and commended will then be decided.
A public vote will then be held over the Green Build Weekend 10-11 September to determine the People’s Choice Award.

North Norfolk Railway First Trains to Cromer
North Norfolk Railway has been working with partners for the last two years to bring a new dining experience to its customers.
On Wednesday 10 August the first train departed at 12noon from North Norfolk Railway station at Sheringham and crossed the road onto the Network Rail line through to Cromer. The train was hauled by diesel to Cromer and then steam back to Sheringham where it continued through to Holt then returned to Sheringham.
The first train was a VIP special, which operated as a dining service with the meal being served along the full journey. The VIP special was only the start, as this was followed later in the afternoon by a further dining train operating the same route for fare paying passengers.
The idea of running dining trains through to Cromer has been under discussion at the railway for a number of years and there have been many hurdles to negotiate. Running on the mainline requires upgrading stock and having locomotives that have been upgraded from the
Heritage line requirements, including the installation of various equipment that has to be available for mainline operations.
In addition, the operator has to be approved to operate mainline services. To enable the trains to operate West Coast Railways have been contracted to run the trains on the mainline on the railway’s behalf.
The steam locomotive used for these trains is a Standard 4 76084 which is owned by the 76084 Locomotive Co Ltd and has been overhauled to the mainline standards in readiness for performing other work on the mainline in the future. It will be assisted by a Class 20 Diesel locomotive, which has been hired in to assist with the Cromer mainline operation.
The North Norfolk Railway will be operating further trains on 7 and 8 September. The product has proved popular with sales for the three public trains already at a high level.
Hugh Harkett Managing Director of the North Norfolk Railway said ‘This day has been a long

time coming so we are extremely pleased to see it come to fruition. The ability to run occasional trains to Cromer does give the railway a new premium product, which we hope to continue in future years.
North Norfolk Railway is based at Sheringham Station and last year carried over 166,000 passengers.

Norfolk Foodbank Given Electric Support

A new service from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners www.norfolklandscapegardeners.co.uk
Cromer and District Food Bank, which covers an area of 200 square miles, supplied three-day emergency food packages to 2,409 people in need, including 920 children, last year.
And now it will be able to help even more vulnerable local people after taking delivery of its new 100% electric Nissan van, which has been funded by a grant from the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund and supplied and sponsored by local Nissan dealership, Crayford and Abbs.
The Nissan e-NV200 costs just two pence per mile to run and has significantly lower maintenance costs. The charity will use the savings it makes to feed more families.
Ella King, Project Manager at Cromer and District Foodbank, said “We cover around 200 miles a day making deliveries and before we were spending a small fortune on diesel. Now though, For alltheyour gardening & landscaping e-NV200 has cut our running costs requirements throughout Norfolk significantly and that’s money we can plough straight back into providing food for the people we exist to support.

She added There’s a huge and growing need for food banks in and around this area so the addition of this van and the support of the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund and Crayford and Abbs is real boost.”
Kevin Abbs, Director at Crayford & Abbs Nissan in Gypsies Lane, Bodham near Holt, said: “Foodbanks are so important to families across the country so we were delighted to be of help to Cromer and District Foodbank, whose work is having a great impact in the area.
“More and more businesses are making the switch to electric motoring and immediately seeing the benefits. We hope they will enjoy the vehicle as they continue to help more families and young people in need.”

Recently Asked Questions and Answers from the Clapham & Collinge Family team By Neale Grearson, Partner and Head of the Family Department
Q. How can I ensure I get my fair share in a divorce?
A. Make sure you see a specialist family Solicitor who is part of Resolution. Obtaining a divorce settlement in the right terms is vital and it is important that you have the right person or people working with you. There is only one "bite of the cherry" so getting this right is very important.
Q. How do I ensure my children
get what I want them to get following my divorce? How do I protect what they're entitled to?
A. When a divorce takes place the needs of children are a vital priority. The Family Court will take into account those needs but after a financial settlement is concluded it is left to individual parents to make sure they provide for the children and ensure they get what they want them to have following the divorce. Complications in particular arise when parents form new relationships and have children from that new relationship or marriage. The starting point is making a Will to have provision for your children. Also if investing money in property with another person (e.g.
a new partner or new spouse) it is important to look at things like Declarations of Trust dealing with joint ownership as new relationships do not always work and that could mean that a new partner might be entitled to a share in property that you would want your children to have had. If you live with a new partner having a Cohabitation Agreement would be advisable but most importantly if you intend to remarry a Pre-Nuptial Agreement could be essential. This could set out that you wish to "ring fence" any assets that you receive from your divorce that you wish to ensure your children benefit from and not your new spouse or his/her children or family.
Q. Will I have to go to court to finalise my divorce?
A. The procedure for an actual divorce is straightforward so long as the husband and wife agree and co-operate. It is now usually unnecessary to attend Court at all. However if there is a disagreement over finances or your children a Hearing might be necessary to deal with those aspects.

Q. If I'm talking about my provisions in a divorce in a court, can it be publicly reported in a newspaper?
A. It is very unusual for this to happen. Proceedings "in chambers" are private unless the Court allows reporting.
Q. Why should I use a solicitor instead of an online divorce service?
A. Most Solicitors will be able to give you a tailored service that is personalised to you and you have the reassurance of being able to ask questions. Many Solicitors will offer a fixed fee for an actual divorce which may be higher than the cost of an online divorce service but you need to decide what type of service you want and what is included (or not included) in the online divorce service.
To find out more or discuss your individual requirements in further detail, our dedicated Family Law solicitors will be delighted to help. Dales Summer Berry Eton Mess by Matt Stacey - Dales Head Chef
It’s definitely the time of year when the British summer berries are well and truly in season. When the summer temperature sore, the temptation for a cool and refreshing summer treat kicks in. And here at the Dales we like to treat our guests to as simple but elegant Summer Berry Eton Mess.
All of the products above can be found in your local supermarket... as well as a few cheats to help you along the way with your meringue.
Matt Stacey, head chef at the Dales produces this yummy desert for his lucky visitors to the Dales Hotel. Summer Berry Eton Mess - no more need be said, except prepare and enjoy! Ingredients
Meringue 4 x large egg whites at room temperature 115g caster sugar 115g icing sugar Chantilly Cream 200g Double cream 100g Sugar Tspn Vanilla Essence Fresh Summer Berries Berry Coulis Strawberries to garnish
Method
1. Preheat the oven to fan 100C/

conventional 110C/gas 1⁄4. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper (meringue can stick on greaseproof paper and foil). 01263 838383 2. Tip the 4 large egg whites into a large clean mixing bowl (not plastic). Beat them on medium speed with an electric hand whisk until the mixture resembles a fluffy cloud and stands 01263 579579 up in stiff peaks when the blades are lifted. 3. Now turn the speed up and start to add 115g caster sugar, a dessertspoonful at a time. Continue beating for 3-4 seconds between each addition. It’s important to add the sugar slowly at this stage as it helps prevent the meringue from weeping later. However, don’t over-beat. When ready, the mixture should be thick and glossy. 4. Sift one third of the 115g icing sugar over the mixture, then gently fold it in with a big metal spoon or rubber spatula. Continue to sift and fold in the remaining icing sugar a third at a time. Again, don’t over-mix. The mixture should now look smooth and billowy, almost like a snow drift. 5. Scoop up a heaped dessertspoonful of the mixture. Using another dessertspoon, ease it on to the baking sheet to make an oval shape (pic 3). Or just drop them in rough rounds, if you prefer. Bake for 1 1⁄2-1 3⁄4 hours in a fan oven, 1 1⁄4 hours in a conventional or gas oven, until the meringues sound crisp when tapped underneath and are a pale coffee colour. Leave to cool on the trays or a cooling rack. 6. In a bowl, beat the double cream with the sugar until you get fluffy stiff peaks on the whisk 7. Next add the vanilla essence to your cream and give it a quick mix. 8. Then fold in the berry coulis and crushed meringue. Fold in a few chopped strawberries 9. Add some large pieces of meringue to decorate

"Being involved in the theatre has really boosted my confidence, given me life skills and I have made a lot of friends," said Joe.
At least a dozen Lost Boys are needed, as well as four youngsters to take the speaking parts of John and Michael, Wendy's brothers who join the magical journey. Theatre director Debbie Thompson said the panto provided opportunities for youngsters to join the professional cast and gain experience.
"We normally get lots to auditions but can only take a few. However, this year there are many more opportunities, which we are thrilled about because we like to get the community involved," she added. One youngster who has reaped the benefits of getting involved in youth drama productions is 12-year-old Joe Oxtoby from Bacton.
Young actor Joe Oxtoby who has risen from a ‘village person’ to tackle lead roles (photo by Richard Batson)
He made his debut as a ‘village person’ in the Jack and the Beanstalk panto in2012, aged just eight, after his mum - district council chief executive Sheila - persuaded him to have a go rather be bored in the holidays.
Joe admitted "I didn't really want to go - but it was great, I learned so much and I loved it." He has since played a range of roles from other chorus parts and a panto dwarf, to the lead in Oliver at Cromer pier with the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society and
Cromer Times 500 August 20th 2016
He has also gone on to win coveted summer school places with the National Youth Music Theatre and the National Youth Choir.
Joe's ambition is to be a commercial airline pilot - with the stage as a hobby in the wings. And he urged any boys thinking about taking part in drama sessions to have a go. If they thought acting was not a suitable thing for boys to do, they should look at "cool" male actors like Johnny Depp and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. Mum Sheila said there was a lot of commitment needed - from youngsters and parents - when boys and girls got involved in drama productions, but the Little Theatre gave a lot of support including providing chaperones and help finding lift shares. "The children get so much out of it that it's worth it," she added.
Youngsters keen to be among Pan's panto Lost Boys should be aged eight to 16 and should enjoy acting and singing, though no experience is necessary. The part of John is aged about 12 and
Joe as Oliver (submitted)
Michael six to eight.
Girls have not been left out. There is also a need to find a Tiger Lily, aged about 16, who is a strong singer as well as a good actress.
Peter Pan runs from 7 December to 1 January and sees the ‘boy who never grows up’ helping Wendy and her brothers fly to London, via Norfolk encountering pirate Captain Hook and two troublesome crocs Tick and Tock along the way. Cast members need to be available from October. Auditions are on September 18 at 10am at the Theatre. Hopefuls need to come dressed to move and with a song prepared. They will be taught a short dance routine and given a piece to read. There is no need to register in advance.

The Rally is in its 22nd year and was named for a car enthusiast who died in a boating accident in 1998. For the past eight years, it has been organised by Brian Monks with the help of his family and friends.
Brian is pictured presenting the cheque to About with Friends’ member Tony Edwards who acted as a marshal at the event. Other members and Brian’s family are also pictured. The rally was also a social activity for a group from the charity who enjoyed looking at such classic vehicles as a Stanley Steam carriage and an Austin Healey. Fittingly, the donation will be used towards funding a new minibus for the organisation. Karen Funnell, who represented About with Friends at the Rally, said that the old minibus was quickly heading towards Classic status and any contributions towards a new one would be eagerly received.

Cromer gears up for World Pier Crabbing Championships and auction of 102 dinky beach huts
This August Bank Holiday Cromer will welcome the return of the World Pier Crabbing Championships where crowds of people will line the length of the pier to vie for the coveted title.
On the same day, 102 dinky beach huts will be displayed on the pier forecourt before they are auctioned off to the highest bidder for charity.
The two annual events, which will be held on Sunday, 28 August are organised by the Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival and will be joined by an array of local craft stalls along the promenade. Throughout the summer, the dinky beach huts have been adorning shop windows, hotels, pubs and guesthouses across north Norfolk.
Decorated by over 400 local people, have been on display as part of the Festival’s annual art trail. From a boathouse complete with slipway and lifeboat to a bookshop complete with replica newspapers and a potting shed filled with
flowers to a fully operational Moulin Rouge, the spectacular huts have collectively taken more than 2,000 hours to decorate.
Lining the pier forecourt, the spectacular huts will be auctioned off by master auctioneer Martyn Fox, who has presided over the last six festival auctions which have raised more than £33,000 for local good causes.
The auction, which has become a staple event for the festival, will be the first and only time people will have a chance to see all the huts displayed together.
The 102 lots on sale, sponsored by local businesses and tricolated by local people, include huts decorated by artists Dianne Lindsay, Samuel Thomas and Lizzie Riches as well as schools and community groups.
The trail has received wondrous attention from locals and visitors alike who have taken on the challenge of spotting all the huts since it began. Schools, youth groups, business, organisations and many talented local people have produced a stunning array of quirky
huts. Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “hundreds of visitors and local families have followed the Beach Hut Art Trail through the season, the auction is your chance to bid for your favourite and is the climax to this year’s festival which has proved the most popular yet. We hope that locals and visitors alike will spend the day with us in Cromer on 28 August and take part in the Crabbing Championships before attending and bidding at the Auction.” For the first time, people who are unable to attend the auction will be able to send in a sealed bid to festival organisers in advance.

Cromer Soapbox Derby 2016 Continued from front cover...
The Carnival Committee provided more severe twists and turns in the chicane, and dramatically raised the ramp from four inches to a nail-biting nine inches tall. Contestants had the choice of braving the ramp, or avoiding it at the cost of a five second penalty. For the second time, the Sporting Car Club of Norfolk supported the event.
The Soapboxes themselves were an explosion of clever designs; some utilitarian, some novel. From the red cockpit design representing the Royal Air Force, to the adapted bath tub (complete with bath curtain and rubber
duckies), the variety was impressive. Winners of the Fancy Dress award included the Stainless Steel Soapbox (number 8) representing Newham Structures in the Business Class, and the Green-Wheeled Soapbox representing The White Horse in the Pub Class (number 10). Not all the Soapboxes survived the event, thanks to the merciless drop of the newly raised ramp.
The overall fastest time went to James Garwood who, even when his Soapbox had lost wheels on landing the jump, went on to achieve the fastest time of 23 seconds. His prize, presented by this year’s Carnival Royal Family, was the Malcolm McGreadie Shield - named after of one of the carnival’s
founders. Other winners included Peter MacMillan of the White Horse in the Pub Class, James Jar in the Junior Class and Chris Newman in the Business Class.
To sum up the event, in the words of Cromer Voluntary Entertainments Organisation Chairman Tony Shipp “There has been a definite improvement on last year; a higher standard of soapboxes all around.” We can look forward to more exciting variations in the formula when the Derby returns next year.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We have recently had several calls from people whose cat has gone missing and we always try to offer advice depending on the individual situation. Although not all cats get reunited with their owners, a high proportion are. We will always suggest that the owner contacts local vets to ensure they are aware of the situation and also to ask neighbours to check in their garages and sheds. Cats are very curious, will sneak in to have a look round, and may decide ‘this looks a nice place to have a little nap’. As the neighbours may not have reason to go into these buildings every day, it is a good starting point. We have on many occasions been advised that the cat has turned up after a few days, very hungry and thirsty and it is obvious that it has been shut in somewhere. However, it is worth noting that a nervous or

timid cat will not immediately come out of its hiding place, so all nooks and crannies need to be checked.
There are also instances where a timid cat, even having been in its new home for some time, will decide not to come in for various reasons. Stephanie recently had a call about such a cat. The owner had seen it in the vicinity but could not entice it indoors. He borrowed one of our traps, placed some nice smelly food inside and within 24 hours the cat was back in its Ditty Dotty, one of the younger cats in home, being made a great fuss care of and cuddling up on her owners lap.
We also hear of instances where a cat has been frightened by a dog and run off. Because they are scared, they may lose their sense of direction and not know the way home. In these instances we would suggest the owner advises their neighbour of the situation and ask them to let them know if they see the cat in question. Once the cat has been spotted, the owner can try to entice it back home. If this does not work, we will gladly lend a trap to help reunite it with its owner. Although you may catch another cat (or even a hedgehog) before getting the ‘right cat’, this is often successful.
Although not all cats are reunited with their owners (and sometimes it can be years before this happens, as we know from past experience) a good few are. Some may have been unfortunate and been in an accident and some, having got lost, may have turned up some distance away as “a stray”.
If you do see an unfamiliar cat in your garden please bear in mind it may be someone else’s cat and they will be desperate to be reunited with it. Your first course action should be to contact local vets to see if any are missing which fit the cat’s description and to get the cat checked to see if it is micro chipped. That way, more cats could be reunited with their owner.

Another successful year for Holt Festival amazement and disbelief that a man can deduce such things. Another big hit was the return of international film star Julie Christie, reading poetry with Anthony and Ben Holden.
This year’s Holt Festival continued to build on past successes with many of its events selling out. The week-long festival began with the announcement of the winner of the annual Holt Festival Art Prize.
This year’s winner was Lara Cobden from Gressenhall. Her painting In The Enchanted Garden was chosen from 190 entries that had been whittled down to a shortlist of 30. Organiser James Glennie said ‘Lara’s winning work was amongst many strong entries but there can only be one winner. It is technically amazing and the reflections of the moonlit sky give a mysterious edge to an otherwise calm warmth’.
As well as a cheque for £1500 Lara has the chance to have her work displayed at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts. Elsewhere in the festival there were sell out appearances from Gyles Brandreth, Jacqui Dankworth, leading journalist Kate Adie, amazing Polish pianist Mariola Cieniawa making her very first UK concert appearance outside London and many others. Forensic mind reader Colin Cloud amazed a packed Auden Theatre and caused every jaw in the house to drop in
Other big names at the festival, now in its 9th year, include novelist Joanna Trollope, comedians Jenny Éclair and Mark Watson and Dire Straits founder John Illsey.
Around 35% of the festival programme is free and there was a much expanded selection of events for children this year, ranging from story telling to dance workshops to the swashbuckling all action family play Captain Morgan and the Sands of Time and Norwich Puppet Theatre’s Oddly.
Planning for the 2017 Festival which runs from Saturday 22 to Sunday 30 July has already begun!

East Runton Parish Councillors, a District Councillor and church officials were amongst those who joined members, staff and volunteers from About with Friends when they opened their new allotment on Monday 1 August.

beautiful space brimming with vegetables and fruits. The product, which will be used by the group’s Catering team and Community Cafe was ceremonially pulled by some of the community dignitaries present at the opening with the gardeners moving in to harvest the rest once they left.
CEO Helen Dalton-Hare and Development Manager Steve Smith spoke at the opening and emphasised the need for more volunteers and gardening equipment to help the group develop. Helen also noted that they were looking for local ‘Weekend Quail-Sitters’ to check for some quails they would like to keep
on the plot.

BeachLife activity week to return to Sheringham clifftop
Final preparations are underway for this year's BeachLife activity week on Sheringham's cliff top and beach later this month. Bumper crowds are expected, and there is no charge to join in the fun. BeachLife is a joint venture by the churches in Sheringham, aimed at engaging with local youngsters, as well as holidaymakers, and this will be its fifth summer. It will run from Tuesday August 30 to Friday September 02. The event is open to all ages up to 17.
Daily activities will start with the ‘Beach Special’ at 10.30am every day except Friday, where all ages come together at the cliff-top marquee on The Leas for music, games, drama and fun, and to introduce the day’s theme, which this year is the Rio Olympics. The children and young people then split into age-groups for their ‘Going Deeper’ sessions to explore that day’s theme in more depth before breaking for lunch. On the Friday, the morning starts at 10.30am with the Going Deeper sessions.
The afternoons comprise of beach games and sports, giant inflatables including the Demolition Ball, a family buffet with Samba band, and the tide fight. Evening activities for young people will include a quiz night with chips, carnival crafts, a ‘Sheropoly’ challenge around the town, and swimming at Splash.
“This has become one of the major events in the town's calendar” said Peter Skivington, one of the organisers. “Not only does this provide an opportunity for the churches to engage with local youngsters, but we provide a great week for visitors as well. We already have people asking when next year's BeachLife is so that they can plan their holidays to Sheringham”. Those wishing to attend can download a form from www.sheringhambeachlife.co.uk and bring it with them to save time on the day. Alternatively, although anyone can just come along and register on the morning, from 10.15am. The website also gives more information about the event, and contact details.

There are a huge variety of roles available for volunteers from the more traditional ones such as engine driver, guard, signaller and station staff to less obvious but equally important ones such as stewarding the increasingly popular Railway Cottage at Holt - a cottage faithfully converted from an old railway carriage, dressed and furnished just as it would have been in the 1930s. The gardens at the stations are lovingly tendered by volunteers who manage to combine two interests in one. The NNR is constantly looking for new volunteers and whatever your aspirations or skills, we believe we can find a volunteer role in our team that you will find both rewarding and enjoyable.
North Norfolk businesses best in county at paying their rates
According to a table of council collection rates across Norfolk, North Norfolk District Council collects more than 99% of business rates. Officers at NNDC have been working hard to ensure collection levels for both business rates and council tax across the district are high and making it as easy as possible for residents to keep up to date with council tax payments.
The table published for the county shows NNDC has the highest collection levels of any Council in Norfolk for non-domestic rates or business rates and had collected an impressive 99.3% for 2015/16. The table also put North Norfolk District Council second in the county for collection of council tax at 98.6%.

Behind these achievements lies a dedicated and hard working team of volunteers who support a small number of permanent staff. Many of the Railways visitors are surprised when they learn that the vast majority of roles on the NNR are undertaken by volunteers. Like most heritage railways, the NNR relies heavily on its volunteers and with the continuing expansion of the railway, the need for volunteers to support it continues to grow.
If you are interested in volunteering on the “Poppy Line”, please contact the NNR at enquiries@nnrailway.co.uk using the heading “Volunteering” in the subject field or telephone on 01263 820800.

Cllr Wyndham Northam Cabinet Member for financial services said “We do understand there are sometimes occasions when circumstances can change and paying council tax or business rates can drop down people’s priority list. Paying rates and council tax is the right thing to do and is a legal requirement, so the fact NNDC, our businesses and our residents are up at the top of the league table is a super achievement.”

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club
At our meeting on 26 July Councillor Tim Adams, Mayor of Cromer, was inducted into our Club by Lion President Arthur Bailey.
This was a joyous occasion as Tim's enthusiasm for all things 'Cromer' is well known, as is his hard work - our numbers are growing!
After a short business meeting, Michael Wild of Age UK Norfolk gave us a most interesting talk on the comprehensive assistance given by that Cromer Times 500 August 20th 2016
charity to any older persons living in Norfolk, including advice, befriending and a wide range of other help and activities both for carers and independent people. Dementia in all its forms was also discussed.
Social events being planned are a visit to Cromer End of Pier Show and an evening of Greyhound Racing for anyone interested.
We had a pitch at Sheringham Carnival on Sunday 31 July and we will also take part in Cromer Carnival in August. 29

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER THYME
in ‘knocking things up’ cheaply and easily. At this time Geoff was actively involved in the campaign to stop the destruction of the limestone pavements – those unique habitats for plants, which were being rapidly depleted to provide the limestone for rock gardens.
A close up of Thymus 'Creeping Red'
It is hard to believe that it is 20 years since the sudden death of Geoff Hamilton, who died from a heart attack on a charity bike ride in the Brecon Beacons in 1996. He was buried, in his boots and jeans, on what would have been his 60th birthday.
Geoff’s impact was enormous - his down to earth and cost conscious approach turned many people onto gardening. Memorable amongst his projects were the £2-a-week garden in 1983, when he set himself a challenge. Could he maintain and improve a small garden roughly 10 x 14m with a lawn, borders, some fruit and vegetables and a small unheated greenhouse on just £2 a week? A second favourite with Gardeners’ World viewers was his creation of artificial rocks. This project, which had some of his nearest and dearest convinced that he had finally flipped, brought together two important strands in his work – his concern for the environment and his delight Cromer Times 500 August 20th 2016
I also remember the raised wooden bed he built to hold thyme plants. His thymes table! As a little tribute to Geoff I have planted an old tin bath with a selection of these herbs. The plants were bought from Norfolk Herbs at the Felbrigg Hall Chilli Festival. This is a nursery specialising in the growing of culinary, medicinal and aromatic herb plants based at Dillington near Gressenhall in Dereham.

have culinary and medicinal properties. All species of thyme contain the volatile oil, thymol, which is an antiseptic and perhaps it was some inkling of this quality which led to the herb being a key ingredient in judges’ posies and the Sovereign’s Maundy Thursday posy to give the carriers some protection from the infectious diseases of the poor.
In the Western Isles of Scotland wild thyme was put under the pillow or drunk as a tea to prevent nightmares or otherwise give a restful sleep. In areas where lavender would not grow well, women used flowering sprigs of thyme to scent their clothes, handkerchiefs and household linen.
There are hundreds of species and varieties to choose from and I picked Creeping Lemon, Pink Ripple, Golden Thyme, Creeping Red, Harlington Silver and Silver King. All are hardy if grown in well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil in full sun. After flowering, vigorous growth will be cut back to maintain compactness.
Thymes are easily propagated either from seed sown in early spring or by cuttings. Divide plants in Spring, insert semi-ripe cuttings in mid or late Summer or softwood cuttings in early Summer. Separate rooted stem sections in Spring or Summer, and pot on until established.
Bees love thyme flowers and the plants also
The finished bath after dressing the surface with gravel
Finally, according to Witchipedia, thyme can be used in magick spells and will attract faeries into the garden, so I will keep my eyes open!

Iron Man Adventure by Joel Lodge
My Dad, Andrew Lodge, is an employee of Shell and over the past couple of years he has been doing triathlons around North Norfolk and he has also recently taken part in the Staffordshire half Iron Man in order to prepare himself for his biggest challenge yet, the Iron Man event in Maastricht. He started off doing triathlons to start being more active and too get into better shape, which he has been successful in doing after losing four stone over the past few years. Doing these triathlons has given him a new hobby to partake in and something that he can challenge himself to do.
On the 1st of August 2016, my Dad completed his first Iron Man in the Dutch town of Maastricht. After months and months of preparation, with early morning cycles, running and lake swimming to prepare him for the event which tests every competitor to the absolute limit.
The Iron Man course in Maastricht consists of a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and a 42.2km run (a marathon). The event started at around seven in the morning and there was a cut off time in the evening, which was around midnight, meaning that anyone who finished after the designated cut off time unfortunately wouldn’t be counted as an Iron Man which would be absolutely devastating for someone who would’ve spent over 16 hours competing in the event, as well as countless hours of training for the event for it to all come too nothing.
Luckily after all my Dad’s hard work and dedication he managed to complete the Iron Man within the time bracket which is a fantastic achievement and one of which I am very proud of him for doing and completing, considering the fact he only started doing triathlons a couple of years ago.

Invitation to Merchant Navy Day at North Norfolk District Council headquarters
Red Ensign will be raised Anyone with connections to the Merchant Navy, including veterans and those currently serving, are being invited to NNDC's Cromer headquarters on 3 September for a flag hoisting ceremony of the Red Ensign.
The event will recognise the work of members of the Merchant Navy, including their role in the two world wars and our continuing reliance on modern day merchant seafarers who bring in 95% of our imports including half of the food we eat.
Local dignitaries and youth groups with sea connections will be invited, but there is also a general invitation to all who have connections to the Merchant Navy.
People attending are asked to arrive at the Holt Road offices at 10.45am for an 11am start. A small reception will follow the hoisting of the Red Ensign, which is the UK Merchant Navy's official flag.
The event will be hosted by North Norfolk District Council Chairman John Lee, who has many links with the sea as a working crab fisherman who comes from a family line of sea fishermen and a long heritage with the RNLI.
"Both Cromer and North Norfolk as a whole have a very long and close relationship with the sea and with people who work on or in the sea, whose efforts can sometimes go unrecognised," said Cllr Lee.
"The opportunity to show our respect for a hard working group of people who operate in a difficult environment for all of our benefit is very welcome."

Norwich City Transfer Roundup and first game thoughts by Joel Lodge, our Football Correspondent
So far in the transfer window, Norwich have been quieter than perhaps expected, however since the last transfer roundup Norwich have made two further signings in the form of attacking midfielder Alex Pritchard and goalkeeper Paul Jones to provide competition for McGovern and John Ruddy. As far as departures are concerned, Ricky Van Wolfswinkel has left Norwich for an undisclosed fee to go back to Holland to play for Vitesse Arnhem, meanwhile, Declan Rudd has gone on a season long loan to League One side Charlton which seems like a step back in terms of his development.
Norwich also missed out on the signing of Ross McCormack as he ended up at Aston
Villa after Norwich were unable to salvage a deal with Fulham.
Norwich kicked off their Championship campaign against Blackburn away from home as they showed their dominance in a 4-1 win, blowing Blackburn away with attacking quality whilst remaining resilient at the back however they were unable to keep a clean sheet. Norwich started off brightly as Jacob Murphy scored one of the goals of the day with a 25 yard rocket in the top right corner to give City an early lead, shortly after Murphy’s screamer, Hoolahan doubled the Canaries lead with a wonderful solo goal proving that he still has it even at the age of 34. In the 25th minute Cameron Jerome slotted home from Ivo Pinto’s cross as his shot deflected in off

Blackburn goalkeeper Jason Steele.
Norwich were the 3-0 victors at the break.
They carried on where they left off in the second half as Steven Naismith scored with a low-drilled finish into the bottom right corner after a sublime nutmeg from Wes Hoolahan who was a menace to the Blackburn defence all game.
Blackburn got a consolation goal from an Anthony Stokes after some poor marking from the Norwich defence.
Overall it was a good result for the Canaries as they start the season off at the top of the table and long may it continue!
18 year old Cromer girl, Emily Bowyer, has managed to achieve a Silver medal, at the recent British Junior Rowing Championships, held at Nottingham.
Emily paired up with fellow Norwich Rowing Club member, Hattie Bracey of Norwich, in their Double Sculls event. It is a major honour to qualify for this competition, so to achieve a Silver medal is a fantastic effort.
Emily has only been rowing for just two years, and has reached the Final in the British Champs twice now, just missing out on rowing for England, both times, by one place.
Emily's sister, Molly, 16, also qualified, for what was her first British Champs, and rowed well in the time trials, but her Final, was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, so could not add to the family's tally!

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club
Our other league team which play in the NANSA League are in the control of David. The team have done well. Against normal expectations away at Sheringham Morley they lost 2 – 6. However David recharged the team and at home against Felmingham there was a very positive 8 – 0 win followed by another 8 – 0 win against Cawston. The team are doing well in the league and David must be very pleased with the results overall during his first year in charge.
Tales from the Bowling Green ...
… and the sun continues to shine. Wonderful bowling weather.
The highlight of the last two weeks was the visit of Bowls England to celebrate 80 years of bowling at the club. What a wonderful sight to see 48 bowlers resplendent in their ‘whites’ playing a friendly game of bowls on the Cromer Marrams green. The National President had taken his team to Freethorpe BC to play Norfolk Bowls Association the previous day and was thoroughly enjoying his time in North Norfolk. The game resulted in a win for Bowls England but who cares about the result in these special games, it’s the game that wins.
Well done to all the players in the league teams. I also thank all three captains for the time and effort they put into team selection, organising transport, sorting out rearranged matches and everything else that goes with the captain’s role. Without Cromer Mayor Tim Adams and Deputy Cromer Mayor Tim Adams, Deputy such commitment the club and teams would not function as Mayor John Frosdick were at the green Mayor John Frosdick, Cromer well as it does during the busy to support the game and for that the Marrams BC President Bernice league season. club is very grateful. Whether or not we Billington and Bowls England will get them bowling on the green is now ‘swishing’ … First of President Michael Jennings. another matter! all it has nothing to do with swapping an item or items now to league matters … The NBA Wednesday of clothing, shoes or accessories with friends or evening team have played their last two league games. acquaintances. Bowling wise each morning it is Travelling away to Bawdeswell to play Lakeside essential to remove the dew from the green to recycle Pilgrims, despite best efforts by all players we lost the moisture that has been produced during the hours 0 – 5. However the last game was the rearranged of darkness. What must be considered is if you are game away against Cawston BC. The green played intending to mow that day. If you are going to mow it well, and so did the team. The result was a 4 -1 win doesn’t matter what you use to remove the dew. This and you could not have seen a broader smile on the can be accomplished by brushing or by using a dew face of Captain Neil. A great conclusion to the season. removal roller or by swishing with whatever you The various opponents have been a mixed bag of have available. You could use a rope, a hose pipe, or teams and Neil has made a very positive start to his if you have such a thing a drag mat. At Cromer we first year as Captain with all the various challenges have a tool, a ‘switch’, which is specifically made for with which he has been faced. I am confident about the task. It is made of aluminium construction with a next season. Now The Norfolk County Federation Premier (West) team hold your breath, when fully extended it is approx. have also now finished all their league games. Two 4.5 meters (14.8ft) long. Away against Holt to side (in a swishing Tawny Owls saw the team lose 2 -7 and then finally movement!) and in away against Fakenham, with admittedly a slightly so doing the dew is weakened team, the club lost 0 – 9. dew the better. This switch is ideal for the task. The swishing is also essential to remove worm casts and other detritus from the bowling green, again necessary before mowing and also preferable prior to actually bowling on the green. If the worm casts are not removed before mowing, or playing, the soil is flattened onto the green potentially affecting the ‘running’ of the green and also affecting the growth/development of the grass. Now in the friendly arena we visited Watton (Loch Neaton) BC. Club Captain Keith managed, after numerous telephone calls, to encourage an almost full team to travel and an enjoyable afternoon was had by all. I think we are spoilt during the season as we have so many teams that want to come to Cromer (well who wouldn’t) to play bowls that when we have to travel away ourselves we are not so enthusiastic. A big thank you to Captain Keith for his efforts in organising and making up our friendly teams both home and away, and also to the very supportive club members who make up the teams and keep the name of Cromer Marrams BC to the forefront of bowls in Norfolk.
I list below our forthcoming ‘Home’ fixtures that you may wish to come along, watch and enjoy. Most league fixtures have now come to an end so it is friendly or club competitions now.
