‘Dance for Fun’ Success at Cromer Carnival
Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent
The Dance for Fun girls have enjoyed more success, this time winning the Junior Talent Contest at Cromer carnival. The girls competed against 15 other acts in the talent contest heats held on Cromer Pier and were placed first in their class with their pirate themed gymnastic dance routine. Further delight came when they were awarded the overall winner’s trophy and were asked to perform the dance again. The girls are aged between 6 and 12 years old and for many of them this was their first performance on a professional stage. The Dance for Fun after school club meets at Smallburgh Village Hall on Wednesday evenings between 6pm and 8pm for children aged 6 years upwards. Children learn ballet, tap, disco and gymnastic dance and take part in many different events throughout the year.

Light hearted and most importantly FUN
Baring Masonic Lodge
We would like to invite you to attend our first Beer Festival in support of charity for local causes and at the same time taste some of the local ales/ciders and lagers brewed here in our wonderful county of Norfolk. The masonic lodges, which meet at Sheringham, have, over many decades helped and supported many local charities, groups and individuals to a better quality of life.
We will also be providing information about Freemasons and their work and endeavor to dispel the myths and legends, which have surrounded our fraternity for decades!
Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organizations. There are 250,000 Freemasons belonging to 8,000 Lodges throughout England and Wales, and districts overseas.
Worldwide, the figure rises to six million Freemasons, all with their own special reasons why they enjoy Freemasonry. Hopefully this provides an indication of the attraction to join?
Members are expected to be of high moral standing and are encouraged to speak openly about Freemasonry.
Most of the support provided by the Masonic Charitable Foundation takes the form of financial grants to individuals and families to assist with daily living costs. We can also award grants to provide specific items or services.
A range of health and care needs, including medical and dental treatments, counseling and mobility aids or home adaptations are supported, with funding also available for respite, residential, nursing and dementia care.
In addition to the support we provide, the Masonic Charitable Foundation awards millions of pounds each year to local and national charities that help vulnerable people, advance medical research and provide opportunities for young people.
We also help to fund vital services such as hospices and air ambulances and regularly contribute to worldwide appeals for disaster relief. In total, our support helps to improve the lives of thousands of people every year in England, Wales and internationally.
We do hope you enjoy the festival knowing that you are helping causes local to you and at the same time enjoying a local pint.

Sheringham and Cromer Lions Club
At our meeting on 23 August Anton Elliott, the club's Immediate Past President presented a cheque for £3,000 to the North Norfolk branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Part of this amount was raised by sponsors for Anton's 70th birthday family gathering in Snowdonia on a 'Zip Wire' which took him 45 seconds to
Sue Wright, David Bickford, Trevor Broome and Anton Elliott
complete one mile on the fastest zip wire in the UK.
Garden Maintenance? Having a problem?
The remainder was raised from street collections and several other fundraising activities throughout last year.
The cheque was given to Trevor Broome, Chairman of the Society. David Bickford, Secretary and Sue Wright, Treasurer, were also present. Anton and Jamie Edghill Following this a cheque for £250 was of EAAA presented to Jamie Edghill of East Anglian Air Ambulance to assist with their ongoing efforts to save lives in the county.
Norman Lamb Calls for North Norfolk District Council to Adopt '2 Minute Beach Clean' Initiative
Norman Lamb and Liberal Democrat District Councillor Sarah Butikofer recently visited the Seaview Beach Cafe at West Runton to find out more about the '#2 Minute Beach Clean' initiative being run there.
We’ll get it done! Norfolk Landscape Gardeners
01692 405301
www.norfolklandscapegardeners.co.uk
Cafe owner, Louise O'Shea, has introduced a board outside her cafe inviting people to take a litter picker and plastic bag in order to collect rubbish off the beach. The rubbish is then put into the bin outside her cafe. The boards are provided by the not-for-profit organisation The Beach Clean Network, and typically businesses pay about £300 to have one.
Commenting, Norman Lamb said ‘Every day holidaymakers take these litter pickers and collect litter off the beach. The result is that this beach in West Runton is kept in immaculate condition and it is an army of volunteers who end up doing this throughout the year. When we visited there was no rubbish visible at all! It is a brilliant initiative.
Our suggestion, after talking to Louise, is that NNDC should try to set up this sort of scheme for every major beach in North Norfolk, encouraging volunteers to come forward and getting companies to sponsor it. This could be an amazing community initiative and would inevitably be very successful in keeping beaches clean. I have written to Sheila Oxtoby, Chief Executive of the District Council, to put this idea forward. Louise has started something fantastic here and it would make a lot of sense for the Council to look at how they can spread this approach across North Norfolk’.
Sarah Butikofer, District Councillor for The Runtons Ward, said ‘I'm delighted with this initiative by Louise. The beach at West Runton is now spotless and she deserves real credit for this. I would strongly encourage NNDC to think about rolling something like this out along all of the North Norfolk coastal resorts’. Cromer Times 501 September 3rd 2016

Register in advance to speak
The way members of the public book their chance to speak about specific planning applications at North Norfolk District Council's Development Committee meetings is about to change.
At the moment people must arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the meeting and request to speak either for or against an application. This is to allow time for the Chairman to rearrange the order of items on the agenda to prevent people having to wait for a long time.
For 'minor' applications, one objector and one supporter is allowed to speak on each application for up to three minutes. If several people have attended to speak on a single application either in support or in objection, they must agree among themselves who will fill the speaking roles.
For ‘major’ applications, or those in which the Council has legal interest or is the landowner, up to four objectors will be allowed to speak for up to three minutes each. Up to four supporters will be allowed to speak for an equivalent time in total to that allowed for the objectors.
From 22 September those wishing to speak will need to register by 9am on the Tuesday before the Thursday meeting (or 48 hours in advance if the day of the meeting is switched from the usual Thursday).
This will allow the list of speakers to be assembled, the agenda ordered in advance and this information circulated to key officers prior to the meeting.
Cllr Sue Arnold, Cabinet Member for Planning and Planning Policy, said "The change will assist with the smooth running of the committee.
"It will avoid potential confusion at the start of the meeting as customer service staff try to ensure the names of speakers are logged against the various items and the agenda re-ordered to reflect the public interest."
The new procedure came into force from 1 September ready for Development Committee on 22 September and information about the new registration process is online.
The number of people allowed to speak and the amount of time they will be allowed to speak for will remain the same.
NORTH NORFOLK MP NORMAN LAMB ANNOUNCES DATES OF HIS ANNUAL ‘VILLAGE TOUR’
Each year, Member of Parliament Norman Lamb spends a week holding street corner advice surgeries in villages across his North Norfolk constituency. This year, his schedule includes more villages than ever. The full schedule of stops on the tour can be found on his website www.normanlamb.org.uk/norman_lamb_village_tour_2016
The rules for local district councillors and town or parish council representatives speaking at the committee are unchanged.
There will also be less noticable changes to Development Committee rules involving deferred items, committee site visits and the cut off time for the submission of information.

Free music gig set to rock the north Norfolk coast
A charity music gig is set to rock the north Norfolk coast this September.
our weekend. We can't wait to showcase some amazing talent, raise some money and bring a party to a beautiful part of Norfolk.”
With more than 20 acts, Unplugged by the Sea will raise cash to help bring music into the lives of people having hospital treatment in the county.
Mr Carpenter said “Over the weekend we have many volunteers who will be helping us to raise as much as we can. People can throw their loose change into the buckets, have a go on our beach themed tombola, buy a balloon model or have their face painted.”
The event, organised by Ben Carpenter from Overstrand and his girlfriend Loren Allen from Norwich, will take place at The Crown in Sheringham over the weekend of 3 and 4 September.
Mr Carpenter, who has previously worked as a music promoter organising Rock Bodham, said “The music has a bit of everything for everyone, from a male singing collective through to solo acoustic performers, bands with brass sections to reggae punk outfits. Above all, it is a totally free family weekend."
Bob Brewster, Loren Allen and Ben Carpenter
treatment.
Acts performing include Morganway, a British Alt-Country outfit, Ukuele Simon, a ukuele player who plays current pop songs with a twist, men’s singing group Voicemale and Truescape, a four-piece Rock/Pop band.
All money raised at the event will go towards the renewal of a music licence at the Weybourne Day Unit at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
The pair were inspired to set up the Unplugged gig after Miss Allen’s father, Kevin, had been using the unit while having chemotherapy
Miss Allen said “Nearly two years ago my family got told my dad had Cancer. Since then my dad has been in and out of the Weybourne Unit for treatment and despite never being able to be free of cancer, he is considerably better than he was. Patients and their families spend hours in the unit and I wanted to do something that would make their time there less of a chore. My dad has been so strong, working during intensive treatment and raising money for related charities himself, I wanted to show how proud I am of him and how much I love him by raising money too. Ben and I both love music. We go to festivals and local venues to see acts just like the ones we have playing over
WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?
The event will start at 12noon and run until 11pm both days with each artist on an outside summer stage for 30 minutes.
Landlord of the Crown, Bob Brewster, said “The Crown has always done its bit where charity is concerned and we have been hosting live music here for more than 35 years. Helping to host the event seemed like a fantastic combination of the two!"
The event has been sponsored by the Crown Inn, Graphic Edge, Starlings, The Sticker Factory, First Response Fire Protection and Electric and local shops Morrisons, QD, Sainsburys and Tesco.

“It’s a common misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor, qualified Family Mediator and Collaborative solicitor.
As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. The common misconception is that a larger local firm or city firm is better but this is incorrect. A client just pays more.
When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I am one of the few solicitors that offffers a free first appointment so that clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision.
I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Fundraising effort wins Kevin a trip to Rio
The Managing Director of a North Norfolk Nissan dealership is preparing for a 'Money-can’t-buy' VIP trip to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games after overseeing a massive fundraising effort to supercharge ParalympicsGB’s athletes.
Kevin Abbs, MD at Crayford and Abbs Nissan led months of fundraising activities raising more than £12,000 to help the nation’s Paralympic heroes to medal glory at the Games.
And in recognition, Nissan - the official automotive partner of Team GB and ParalympicsGB - is sending him on an all-expenses paid trip to Rio for an experience he’ll never forget.
A delighted Kevin said “It’s amazing. We went to the effort of fundraising because it was such a good cause but I never thought in a million years I’d end up in Rio cheering our athletes on. We couldn’t have raised this incredible amount without the tireless work of everyone at the dealership and the large number of organisations and customers who have supported us over the year.”

Kevin, who will be taking his friend Clive Hedges on the journey to Rio de Janiero, added, “I cannot wait to witness the carnival atmosphere in Brazil during the Games and am already looking forward to seeing our athletes try and bring home the Gold – especially Jessica – Jane Applegate.”

Forbidden Fruit
By Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr
You may have seen headlines in the press in August: “Apple tells mourning father to get court order to access late son’s music, photos and ‘memories’”.
grant their executors full access to it.
Best practice would be to do both.
It is doubtful that Morgan, age 20, who died so tragically and suddenly, and who worked as a hospital clerk, but moonlighted as a graffiti artist and musician, was someone who would have made a Will. Apple’s attitude is, however, food for thought for the rest of us.
The case relates to young man of 20, Morgan Hehir, who was murdered in an unprovoked attack, while out on a Hallowe’en night last year.
Apple said that, due to strict privacy laws, it could not hand over the data to the Hehir family without legal authority. Apple argued, perhaps not unfairly, that some Apple customers may not want their private data transferred to other people, even upon their death; and that therefore Apple could not override password protected data. Apple said that it was not for them to make the decision.
A Grant of Probate of a Will (or Grant of Letters of Administration, where there is no Will) is a Court Order, but that wasn’t specific enough for Apple.
Morgan’s father, Colin was told it wasn’t a legal matter and the Information Commissioner said it wasn’t a data protection issue. Colin pointed out that Morgan owned the computer and the data and that Apple owned only the access.

On the basis that ‘prevention is better than cure’, what steps should be taken to prevent such a situation arising?
Secondly, another option, which I am yet to put into being, is a specific statement in the Will and/or Lasting Power of Attorney authorising the release to the executor/attorney of all encrypted data and ordering all providers to

It is a fair argument that not necessarily everyone would want their executors and/or family to have access to all their private data in the event of their death. Some things are best kept secret and taken to the grave!
First, the obvious answer; which is to keep the relevant passwords, not just for Apple, but for all online matters such as bank accounts, utilities etc somewhere able to be accessed upon death or incapacity. CROMER Carnival PARADE
The Parade returned this year to colossal crowds and fabulous floats. We had bagpipes and quad bikes, dancers and dinosaurs, beach runners and band players.
Winners included Sheringham Medical Practice for the Spirit of the Carnival Award, and In Touch Systems’ notorious Pirate Ship, which plundered the award for Best Entertainment. Clear blue skies encouraged a warm atmosphere and enthusiastic participation on both sides of the parade fence.
In the words of Carnival Chairman Tony Shipp “It was the biggest Carnival Parade we’ve had in perhaps 20 years—a very high standard of floats and the best attendance in many years.”
New events at the Carnival this year included
16
the Game and Country Fair and the Illuminated Umbrellas of the Illuminated Parade. Both were successful and stand a strong chance of returning next year. The Umbrellas in particular were very popular and the night-time Parade looks set to become a major attraction in its own right.
The winners of each of the classes were: Class 1 Articulated Lorries: Cromer Parish Church Class 2 Rigid Lorries: Dance Zenergy Class 3 Towed Trailers and Any Vehicle: Farmer Graham of Hall Farm Felbrigg Class 4 Decorated Cars, Vans and Coaches: Lego Freewheel Family Class 5 Fancy Dress (13+):
Bus and Us Class 6 Vintage Vehicles and Bikes: The Muppets Spirit of the Carnival: Sheringham Medical Practice Most Entertaining: In-Touch Systems – Pirate Ship Overall Winner: Cromer Parish Church.
Tony Shipp wishes to thank all who took part in the event for being part of the Carnival and making it such a success for another year running.
Further results will be uploaded at a near date to the carnival website at: www.cromercarnival.co.uk

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
In the last article I mentioned that we had recently received calls from several people whose cats had gone missing, so am very happy to report that another cat is now safely back home. Reggie was re-homed with his brother, Ronnie, in June and because they were quite timid cats, had only just started to go out. When both cats went missing, their new family was very worried, so were delighted when Ronnie returned home after a few days. As Reggie was still missing, posters and flyers were put up, everyone was informed (including the radio) and his family continued searching for him, but he appeared to have completely disappeared. At last, four weeks after he went missing, we received a message to say that he was home. Tired, very hungry and much thinner, he was delighted to be back, as was his family, although his brother did hiss when he first saw him. Because of his condition we can only conclude that he was locked in somewhere for at least part of that time. Plenty of tender loving care, food and drink in little and often portions, plus lots of sleep, were the order of the day to help him recover from his ordeal. The brothers soon settled back into their routine and, when their family are not available, spend time cuddled up together on the sofa or bed. Their family are very relieved to have them home and it goes without question to say these very lucky little cats are being spoiled rotten. Let’s hope some of the other cats that are missing come back home soon.
We recently mentioned websites selling cats (and other animals) and how these websites are working with other organisations to identify the claims being made. A recent communication from our Head Office is now asking for help to identify people selling kittens in poor health and as we believe it is very important to stop this I have included their appeal here so that anyone who has been affected can contact them direct.
“Kittens need your help! Cats Protection wants better safeguards for the commercial sale of
all kittens. We are concerned about kittens being sold underage or sick, for example, flea or worm infested, underweight or with an eye infection. If you recently bought a kitten online from an individual and you found out it was sick or under eight weeks old, please tell us about it and send Reginald who was a stray, still quite photos. Email: young, very gentle boy who loves to campaigns@cats.org.uk. play Thanks, with your help we can change the law on pet sales.”
Rachel, our Fundraising Officer, has been very busy of late organising collections but this has not stopped her from looking at new ways to raise money to help pay for food, veterinary bills etc for the cats in care. She is organising a night out for Bingo lovers at the St Benet’s Hall on Saturday 24 September. This is a new venture for us, so if you enjoy playing Bingo please come along and support us. More details are available in the ‘What’s on Where’ column.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

KEEPING UP WITH DEMAND
Local law firm Clapham & Collinge has expanded its network with new offices in North Walsham with services including debt recovery, litigation
With an innovative new look and a refreshing approach to law, a well-known Norfolk law firm has expanded its network of offices in the county. Clapham & Collinge Solicitors has opened a branch in North Walsham, extending its reach across North Norfolk.
The new offices build on an existing presence in Norwich, Sheringham and Brooke for a firm which celebrated its 60th anniversary last year. As an independent law firm acting for individuals and business clients, the team at Clapham & Collinge believes in adopting an informal and friendly approach to its customers. Partner and Head of Family and Charities Departments Neale Grearson said: “We provide a full range of legal services for business and individuals in Norfolk; everything from divorce, conveyancing, wills, trusts and probate. We are very much a law firm that is trying to move away from the stuffy stereotype of solicitors’ offices with a more open and approachable stance and one where we want to encourage our clients to call when they have a problem without worrying about the bills starting to run up straight away. We take an innovative approach to meet the needs of our clients by offering appointments outside usual office hours and at their home or business if they prefer rather than coming into the office.”
Business clients also receive the full attention and expertise of the Clapham & Collinge team
and disputes, employment and commercial property law. With offices open six days a week, staff members at Clapham & Collinge are committed to making themselves more accessible to existing and new clients. Marketing Manager Louis Hilldrup-Boorman said: “As a firm of solicitors we work very hard to set ourselves apart from the competition in that we are more approachable and try to provide added value with our involvement in the community and our work with dementia awareness events and various training sessions. We also offer free advice mornings where people can come in and see our solicitors on a range of issues such as conveyancing, lasting powers of attorney, wills and family legal advice.”
One of the key tenets for Clapham & Collinge lies in striving for excellence within the profession and adopting innovative ways to resolve legal issues by finding solutions that meet the unique needs and goals of the individual or business. In offering a modern and comprehensive service, a high level of personal service is very much the company’s hallmark. Neale Grearson explained: “The opening of the North Walsham office was in response to customer demand and seemed a natural extension of our presence in that part of Norfolk.
“It follows on from the success of our Sheringham office and our move into a new office space last year. In North Walsham,

family run business serving home cooked dishes prepared to order using locally sourced produce where possible
however, we have a slightly different feel to our other offices which have a walk-in reception. This is more of a shop window approach with a more informal feel than other typical solicitors’ office premises.”
North Walsham will be open six days a week, including from 9am to midday on a Saturday. In the last few months, Clapham & Collinge has been building a presence in North Walsham through a series of networking events and has already made a number of strong business contacts in the area. With the offices now open, a launch party is planned for later in September.

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE FINALE Cromer Library on 24 September It’s been a MEGNEFICACKLE CHALLENGE FOR MALI-WILLS EVERYWHERE!
Or so they might say if you were in a Roald Dahl story. Over the course of the summer holidays children across North Norfolk have been making up odd words to add to a Wurdy Gurdy Machine in homage to the celebrated
wordsmith Dahl as part of this year’s summer reading challenge. Their wonderful wordy inventions all contributed to one magnefickle story which is to be officially unveiled as part of the traditional certificate handout for the annual challenge. County Councillor Hilary Cox will be joined at Cromer Library on 24 September by the Town Mayor, Tim Adams, to enjoy the wondiforous story. They are giving out medals all morning with the official opening of the Wurdy Gurdy Machine at 11am.
The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual event, produced by The Reading Agency and delivered by the library network across the country to inspire all children to read their choice of library books over the school holidays.
It has become something of a tradition for our libraries across North Norfolk to join forces with the local arts organisation FALCON, or Facilitating Arts for Children of Norfolk, to put on a series of fun and creative workshops to run alongside the reading challenge to
inspire during the long summer break.
The workshops were run by local writer and wordsmith Belona Greenwood, aka Miss Fluttlewordblurger, which have proved to be the perfect anecdote for children and parents looking for something fun and educational to do over the holiday season. The workshops ran across all eight north Norfolk libraries to wild celesterics and a big thank you to all those who took part and helped organise the sessions. Great Funnyous and laughjoy was had by all. The amaziful and incredibling story and pictures the children created are free to see and enjoy so please come along on the day and who knows maybe you can get inspired to get reading and get creative yourself.
The workshops were jointly sponsored by FALCON www.falcon-norfolk.org.uk and the library service.
To discover more and for library opening times visit: www.norfolk.gov.uk/libraries or go to the Summer Reading Challenge website: www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk for further details

Age Concern North Norfolk is getting into the ’40s swing during the annual weekend celebrations in Sheringham
Age Concern North Norfolk is getting into the 40’s swing during the annual weekend celebrations in Sheringham. They are hosting a fashion show, with the best-dressed traditions of the 40’s styles, at their Day Centre on Cremer Street. Come and enjoy the fashion of the 40’s and a cream tea, for just £6 per person, in true 40’s style. The event is free to enter and is kindly supported by Sheringham Community Wardrobe and all proceeds go towards the many wonderful schemes run by the local charity including their befriending scheme, day services and Keep-InTouch Clubs. The fashion show is on Saturday 17 September and starts at 10am. For more information, or to book your afternoon tea, please call Dale on 01263 821188.
The week after, 25 September, Age Concern North Norfolk is hoping to raise some much needed money by putting on a variety show. The show is organised in conjunction with the Good Intentions Fundraising Team (G.I.F.T) and has been running for many years. The show is held at Aldborough Community Centre and tickets costs just £5 and this includes a cup of tea or coffee. There will also be a raffle and light refreshments to purchase. Tickets can be purchased, or reserved, from Age Concern North Norfolk on 01263 821188 or by calling
Yvonne Tiffany on 01263 768076. Artists appearing include Pat Nearney aka The Norfolk Nut, Doreen Reed, Mel Brown, Pete Philips, The Volko Trio, a local family of performers from Holt and winners of the G.I.F.T Talent Show in March plus many more. The idea for the Variety Show came about when G.I.F.T founder and organiser, Yvonne Tiffany, wanted to commemorate her late father, who was a professional organist/pianist, and who accompanied many artists many of which went on to become household names. The show starts at 2.30pm and is expected to finish around 5pm. The Age Concern North Norfolk Pop-In Group in Cromer saw the launch of a new Carer’s Drop-in on 29 July. The group will run at the Cottage on Louden Road, where the Pop-in Group meet, on the last Friday morning of every month. It is run in conjunction with Norfolk Carers, formerly the Carers Agency Partnership and was funded by the Cromer Town Council to allow easy access to information and services for Carers. The group runs from 10am and everyone is welcome so if you are interested in popping along then we’d love to see you. Please get in touch with our group leader Ann North-Graves for more info on 01263 761508.

Non-surgical body contouring
Do we have an alternative to liposuction?
Liposuction remains the top cosmetic surgical procedure worldwide. There is however, a strong demand for non-invasive procedures that can address localised pockets of fat. OK. I am going to give you my conclusion right at the start. Unfortunately none of the heavily marketed devices have lived up to the hype so far. They certainly have a place in a cosmetic clinic but it is limited!
Here I provide information on two of the most known devices. Zerona™ is one of the several low level laser devices marketed as laser lipo. The theory is that low-level laser therapy opens pores in fat cells and they leak fat, which is then cleared by the body’s metabolic processes. These are marketed as laser lipo but are not as effective as true laser liposuction. One well known UK manufacturer of a similar device recently went bust! Zeltiq™ device selectively freeze fat cells in a controlled manner and cause fat cell death. So we know that fat cells are actually destroyed by this method. A treatment session takes an hour or more. This combination of low temperature and treatment time is such that it damages fat cells but not the overlying skin, as fat cells are more susceptible to cold. Again multiple sessions may be required with this device. Other non-invasive options for fat removal are radiofrequency and low frequency ultrasound machines and focused ultrasound devices. My treatment of choice for fat reduction remains laser liposuction and here are my reasons: 1. It provides best visible results. Non-invasive treatments do not even come close to the results achieved by this technique. 2. It is carried out under pure local anaesthesia so there are no risks associated with general anaesthesia. 3. Three-dimensional contouring can be achieved and majority of patients require one session only. 4. It can be combined with fat transfer.
If you are after modest improvement and do not mind having multiple sessions then non-invasive fat reduction may be suitable for you. This will not, however provide results comparable to laser assisted micro-cannula liposuction which remains the gold standard for body contouring. Non-surgical treatments may also prove more expensive.

Dear Margaret,
On Tuesday 16 August we had a very enjoyable and successful evening in the Carnival marquee on Runton Road, Cromer, when about 700 people came along for a game of bingo.
Some went home with a nice cash prize, others said they came along for a nice social evening.
Please can I now thank the shopkeepers, traders, businesses and individuals from Cromer, Suffield Park and beyond who so generously donated items for the raffle which totalled 92 prizes and enabled us to raise £1475 profit – a record amount!
This is the 30th year that a successful bingo has taken place on the Tuesday of Carnival Week so thank you all for your continued support and we hope to see you all next year.
Trevor & Valerie Pells, Jim & Janice Woolston
Cromer Ladies Lifeboat Guild would like to extend our thanks to everyone who came along and supported us on Lifeboat Day, making it such a success. The excellent weather certainly helped to ensure that the stalls were busy throughout the day. We would also like to thank the many people who gave their time to organise, set up and help run the stalls, manned the collection buckets or made donations of a variety of items. The money is still being counted but the initial figures indicate that we will have raised more money than last year! Thank you, once again, for your generous support. Jill Reedman, Cromer Ladies Lifeboat Guild

Tales from the Bowling Green ...
…and still the sun continues to shine. The green looks a bit brown but Bob the sprinkler has been giving it some water now and again. It is running very fast so that is good. Carnival Day saw members on the green playing a Spoon Drive – I still don’t know why we give them that name. All play stopped at 11.00am to watch the Red Arrows from the wonderful position on the cliff top near the bowls club. I do not think there can be a much better position in the country to watch the team perform over the sea when the weather is fine. Blue sky, very few clouds and blue sea, nothing in the way of the wonderful display. We also had our target bowls available. Roll/bowl a bowl and see how many you can score for a small monetary prize. Children played as much as mums and dads. As far as the game was concerned the winner was Pam Worrell and the person with the worst score Peter Bird. The club remained open all afternoon, and the evening of course saw many members watch the procession from close to the club. A successful day all round.Horsham St Faiths BC visited us to play ‘our’ game instead of their ‘roving cot’. Great company and enjoyable game. We then played a friendly game away at Weybourne and found the green challenging but still managed to win on three rinks and only lose on one so well done to all our players. When the ladies played the gentlemen of the club honour was at stake. Close games on a number of rinks with the gentlemen being the eventual winners by 13 shots. There were a number of ‘silly’ events to report. There were two cases of a wrong bias being bowled in actual games, the culprits being Peter (that’s me) and Doreen. Bernice was trying to put an entry in the club diary to fix a game, then said that the days were wrong. She was only looking at
