Crab & Lobster Festival toasts successful auction and crabbing championships The 2016 Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival came to a close on Sunday 28 August with the World Pier Crabbing Championships and annual auction in Cromer.

And the sunny bank holiday Sunday saw thousands of people visiting the town to take part in the festivities.

Crab & Lobster Festival toasts successful auction and crabbing championships Continued from front cover...
largest crab measuring 125mm and to Robyn Clarke who caught the most crabs in a net with a total of 35.
Prior to World Pier Crabbing Championships scores of people queued along the pier to register before nets and lines were dropped into the sea at 10.30am.
After three hours of competitive crabbing the World Pier Crabbing Champion title, which is won by the largest number of crabs caught on a line, was won by Team IDK from Norwich, who caught eight crabs. The team of four – David Porter, Rachael Kirkham, 12-year-old Daisy Porter and 10-year-old Holly Porter - said “It’s amazing, we can’t believe we won!”
They were awarded the Richard Davies Memorial Plate which is named memory of former Cromer lifeboat coxswain Richard Davies who died in 2010.
Under the hammer of auctioneer Tim Blythe, the 101 boats sold in just over 60 minutes to raise over £6,500.
The beach huts were part of the Festival’s art trail which ran from Easter, over the Festival weekend and up until the Auction. Over 400 individuals had a hand in decorating the huts including 10 community groups and schools as well as families and staff of local businesses.
After furious bidding on many of the lots the hut that achieved the top price at auction was sponsored by The Garden House Gallery in Cromer and fetched £1,000. This was followed by the hut sponsored by Breakers Cafe in Cromer which raised £670.
Other prizes awarded were to Emma Critchley, who caught the

Festival chairman Tony Shipp said “Seeing all the huts on show together for the first time was spectacular along the pier forecourt, I think it went very well and we are extremely pleased with the support the auction received and the amount raised.”
The Festival wishes to thank all the people who helped, supported and bid at the event. Next year’s Festival will take place 20-21 May 2017.

New 48 space car park and toilets planned for Cromer Planning application submitted by north norfolk District Council
A new 48 space car park, with six blue badge spaces and a new toilet block, could be built on the old tennis courts at North Lodge Park in Cromer.
The east end of town has been in need of more parking for years and now a planning application lodged by North Norfolk District Council seeks to address this challenge.
The majority of public car parking facilities to serve Cromer town centre, beach and promenade attractions are located to the west of the town centre and include The Meadow, Cadogan Road and Runton Road car parks.
“The east end of Cromer has been crying out for more car parking for many years and we want to tackle this need by good use of a brownfield site and at an appropriate scale, said North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Assets, John Rest.
“This will be a positive move for businesses at this end of town, visitors, the wider tourism offer in Cromer, people wanting level access to the Rocket House lift and for footfall in North Lodge Park itself.
“We know more and more people are coming to Cromer and we have to provide the facilities they need. This will help the town to grow and expand, taking advantage of the increasing number of tourists as well as helping residents. “We have also increased the number of
isabled bays above and beyond the policy we normally operate to because we felt it was appropriate to do so in this location.
“The project also makes use of a redundant building to build excellent new, accessible toilets.
If it receives planning approval, the new pay and display car park would be built on a part of North Lodge Park adjacent to Overstrand Road. The area in question is ‘brownfield’ and has previously been used for tennis and a children’s play area. For several years, it has been redundant as a public space and is now used by the Council’s parks unit for storage of vehicles.
The project includes plans to build a new, independent entrance and exit on to Overstrand Road to the east of the existing access, identified after consultation with Highways officers. There will be a height restriction barrier in place to prevent use by camper vans and commercial vehicles.
The former bandstand/park attendant’s building would be turned into a new public toilet block including male, female, accessible and baby-changing facilities. These new toilets would replace the dated facilities to the rear of the tea rooms.
Pedestrian access from the car park would be provided into North Lodge Park in the north-west corner of the car park, coming out into the Park opposite the tea-room, allowing safe pedestrian access to the town centre and
beach beyond via The Gangway, or the Rocket House lift. Pedestrian access to the shops at the east end of Church Street would also be available via existing pavements on Overstrand Road. If the project goes ahead, the boating lake, cafÊ, children’s playgroup and the use of North Lodge would be unaffected.

CANTAMUS CHOIR
Aylsham Model Railway Exhibition
Cantamus resumed practices on Thursday 15 September in Thorpe Market Church at 7.15pm for a 7.30 start. The choir happily returns to its former venue where it was founded nearly 20 years ago. It is now under new directorship and promises exciting programmes in the coming months.
The Broadland Model Railway Club is holding its annual Model Railway Exhibition on Saturday 1 October in the Jubilee Centre at Aylsham from 10am to 4pm.
Considered to be a most friendly group of choristers, it is encouraged to see the return of previous members and welcomes new members, (or those wishing to ‘give it a try’) with some ability to read music plus enthusiasm and commitment.
Further details from Katayoun on 01263 833847 or katayounpd@gmail.com
This year’s event will see advances made on the Club’s own Broadsea layout and Gneiss Cider built to a fairly rare scale of Gn15. Fourteen layouts ranging from N to 0 tin-plate and narrow gauge will be on show. There will also be 14 trade, society and demonstration stands. Refreshments are available at the Station’s Whistlestop Restaurant and the Jubilee Centre. Admission is £4 for adults and £3 for children and concessions. Wheelchair users and their companions are at concession rates and there is easy access and free parking for the disabled. Free parking at the BVR Station.
SING, SING, SING
Is singing on your bucket list? Do you love to sing, in the bath, in the shower, in the car?
Community Singing Group ‘Sing for Joy!’ is waiting to welcome you. There are meetings in Sheringham on Tuesday evenings or in Cromer on Thursday morning. Leader Teresa Verney says ‘If you are unsure about coming, just come, and you will find a lovely bunch of people who will welcome you and help you discover what fun singing together is’.
The event is sponsored by the Bure Valley Railway and supported by The Royal British Legion, Aylsham Branch Women’s Section. All return passengers arriving from Wroxham by train will only have to show their ticket to gain free admission to the exhibition and there will be a vintage coach providing free rides between Aylsham station and the exhibition centre.
Singing is good for you, of that there is no doubt. You’ll laugh and make friends, you’ll sleep better and calm your nerves, you’ll help any mental or physical ailments you have and you will go away feeling so much better.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?
“It’s a common misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor, qualified Family Mediator and Collaborative solicitor.
As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. The common misconception is that a larger local firm or city firm is better but this is incorrect. A client just pays more.
When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I am one of the few solicitors that offffers a free first appointment so that clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision.
I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Autumn
There's a nip in the air, autumn is here. The countryside is beautiful at this time of year. Sunlight filters through the trees, making everywhere so bright, I watch the river sparkle, such a magical sight. I see a red squirrel whizzing up a tree, the speed that he is moving quite surprises me. Gold and brown leaves spiral down and crackle where I tread, the colours are amazing, sometimes the leaves are red. My spirits are lifted at the colours that I see, I long for days like this, they give such joy to me. Diane Berthelot Cromer Times 502 September 24th 2016

Leon Bunnewell – Norfolk Life
THE GALLERY NORFOLK
LEON BUNNEWELL - NORFOLK LIFE New paintings of Norfolk sea and landscapes 1st October - 15th October 2016, Cromer
An exhibition of new painting of Norfolk’s beautiful coast line and landscapes is coming to The Gallery Norfolk in Cromer on the 1st October 2016 to the 15th October. Norwich based Leon has long been one of The Gallery Norfolk's best loved artists. His work is collected by Norfolk residents and by tourists keen to have a reminder of the beautiful scenery we have around us. Leon’s free and impressionistic style captures the energy and mood of the people in his pictures – whether they’re walking on the esplanade, jumping in the waves or fishing off the pier on a windy day.
In addition to his paintings of the lively North Norfolk beaches and Cromer Pier, Leon also loves to paint landscapes, which are rarely of the usual spots pictured by Norfolk artists, he prefers the quieter spaces like Ludham and Halvergate Marshes or the Felbrigg Estate.

FALCON Concerts
The 2016 FALCON Concerts programme is coming to an end for another year in October but rest assured they will be back. Held quarterly at St Andrews Church in Holt they are arranged to help raise funds for FALCON (the North Norfolk based arts initiative - Facilitating Arts and Literature for the Children of Norfolk) and St Andrew's Church Development Fund. Performers once again are drawn from the pool of young professionals, all ex-pupils from the Purcell School (an international school for young musicians of exceptional talent), who very generously come for expenses only. This year saw a wonderful range of concerts on offer, including, for the first time, a Chamber Orchestra concert, in early July,

conducted by the internationally acclaimed conductor Peter Stark. This concert is part of an exciting and ambitious School’s Concert project which included a wider programme of related events and activities – composition workshops, children’s art and poetry workshops, exhibitions and competitions, visits to their local libraries all on the theme of ‘Carnival of the Animals’. All of which were developed in partnership with Holt Festival and 5 local Primary School’s (Langham, Holt, Gresham Village, Roughton and The Belfry in Overstrand), the North Norfolk Library Service, the acclaimed local poet and prize winning children’s author Kevin Crossley-Holland, and St. Andrews Church.
The project was a huge success that also saw an exhibition of children’s artwork being displayed at St Andrews Church in Holt the week of Holt Festival. The next concert is on Saturday 15 October, at 6.30pm when Francina Moll Salord and Margalida Moll Salord come to St Andrews Church in Holt. As many already know, the performances can be truly breath-taking, and we are, as always, confident you won't be disappointed…the next concert promises to be no exception.
We look forward to seeing everyone again in 2017 if not before. As usual pre-concert drinks will be available, as well as during the interval.

Recently Asked Questions and Answers from the Clapham & Collinge Family team ‘Why do I need a Will?’
were orphaned under 18. This will ensure certainty for your children at what will inevitably be a difficult time for all involved.
Q1. Do I need a solicitor to produce a Will? A. No you don't need a solicitor to produce a Will. However, to ensure that you have covered every angle, you should seek professional advice. All too often, homemade Wills do not cover all eventualities and/or are defective in some way. It can lead to expensive rectification or disappointed beneficiaries after death. Not only will solicitors ensure that all angles are covered but most also store your Will free of charge.
Q2. How do I know if I'm an executor of a Will? A. An executor is the person responsible for dealing with a person’s affairs once they have passed away. Hopefully the person who made the Will (the Testator), will have informed you at the time of making their Will if you are an executor. If the Testator made their Will through a solicitor and that solicitor has been informed of the death, they will contact the executors. If a solicitor is dealing with the estate or is holding the Will, you can expect to be told shortly after they had been informed. There may also be a copy of the Will with the deceased's private papers which will confirm who has been appointed as an executor.
Q5. How often should I update my Will? A. You should review your Will at least every 5 years or sooner if your circumstances have changed. It is important to check that your Will still reflects your wishes. In some cases, an out of date Will can cause issues and result in a very different outcome than you originally anticipated. A change in circumstances such as marriage (a Will is automatically ‘revoked’ (cancelled) on marriage unless that Will specifically states otherwise), divorce, becoming responsible for a child, deaths

Q3. What happens to an estate if a Will's authenticity is questioned? A. Those dealing with the estate should stop work immediately or at least ensure that no distributions are made. If you are concerned about the authenticity of a Will and you feel that you are prejudiced by the contents of that Will, then you should contact a solicitor who is not acting for the executor immediately and as a matter of urgency. The longer this is left, the more difficult it is to unravel.
Q4. What information does my Will need to contain? A. There are many things to consider here. Your Will should contain your details and the details of the executor(s) you wish to appoint. You should provide full names (and if possible, addresses) for those you would like to benefit from your estate. It is important to carefully consider what each beneficiary is to receive from your estate and to specify this in your Will. You should also consider contingencies, so that you decide who will receive what if any of the beneficiaries pass away before you. If you have children under the age of 18 you should confirm who you would like to act as their Guardians, if they
and family feuds should be catalysts to picking up the Will and checking it out. If in doubt, talk to a solicitor.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER
MICHAELMAS DAISIES watering and mulching and removing all mildew can be reduced by regular
days. Our gardens are beginning to look a little tired at this time of the year but one of the flowers that can be relied upon to give us colour are Michaelmas daisies, hence the rhyme ‘ The Michaelmas daisies, among dead weeds, Bloom for St Michael’s valorous deeds...’
Michaelmas, the feast of St. Michael the Archangel, is a day in the Western Christian liturgical year that occurs on 29 September. In medieval England, Michaelmas marked the ending and beginning of the husbandman’s year. The name Michaelmas comes from a shortening of ‘Michael’s Mass,’ in the same style as Christmas (Christ’s Mass) and Candlemas when the church candles were blessed.
In Christianity, the Archangel Michael is the greatest of all the Archangels and is honoured for defeating Satan in the war in heaven. He is one of the principal angelic warriors, seen as a protector against the dark of night, and the administrator of cosmic intelligence. Michaelmas has also delineated time and seasons for secular purposes as well, particularly in Britain and Ireland as one of the quarter days.
Because the feast falls near the equinox, it is associated in the northern hemisphere with the beginning of Autumn and the shortening of
There is something old-fashioned about Michaelmas daisies, something unpretentious and modest, but their autumn colour makes them essential for every garden. They come in a wide colour range, dominated by blues and purples, but also pinks, reds and whites. Bees and butterflies love them. Botanically these daisies are part of the aster family and the easiest to grow are the nova-belgii cultivars, which are capable of colonising any waste ground via their running rootstocks as well as self-sowing themselves freely. Their great strength is the range of colours which have been bred, but they also have real problems mainly with powdery mildew which coats the leaves and makes them look distressed and scruffy.
The fungus starts on the underside of the leaves and then spreads rapidly. The impact of the
top growth at the end of the season to reduce the number of spores over-wintering.
To avoid problems it is worth seeking out the New England varieties, which are pretty much pest and disease resistant. Other good choices for aster are amellus, x frikartii and lateriflorus.
All asters like a sunny spot and are not too fussy about the soil but do best in moist rich conditions. Most varieties will need staking to avoid the flowers being flattened by wind and rain. All asters can be easily propagated by division in spring from fresh growth, making the cut right at the base of the shoot.
Folk lore in the British Isles suggests that Michaelmas day is the last day that blackberries can be picked. It is said that when St. Michael expelled Lucifer from heaven, he fell from the skies and landed in a prickly blackberry bush. Satan cursed the fruit, scorching them with his fiery breath and stamped and spat on them, so that they would be unfit for eating. As it is considered ill-advised to eat them after 29 September, a Michaelmas pie is made from the last berries of the season.

Pop Festival for Friends
A mini pop festival in Thurgarton organised by Rob Woolnough and his partner Marian, added almost £1200 to the coffers of Cromer-based charity About with Friends.
Rob, who is a singer himself, arranged for lots of musician friends to perform in the spacious back garden of his home for the second year running. Over 100 paying pop fans – mostly friends and family – were treated to performances from the likes of the Busketeers, blues guitarist Mickey Flynn, singer
Alan Harper with guest guitarist Lee Vasey and many other local singers and musicians.
A massive raffle and tombola helped swell the takings as did a face-painting stall run by About with Friends and sales of cakes baked by their catering team. Members from both the Youth and Adult groups attended the event to watch the bands. They included a Rob and Marion’s granddaughter Nicole who is a member of the charity.
Although high winds and a couple of downpours threatened the event, the twelve hour music marathon kept going and finished with
Cromer teachers inspired by former hostage
Staff from Cromer Academy have received awards from former hostage Terry Waite at a special event to mark the new school year.
Nina Torin and Jimmy Morrison from the secondary school were among the winners of Inspiration Awards at the event for teachers and support staff from the Inspiration Trust academy family, held at St Andrew’s Hall in Norwich on Thursday 1 September.
During the awards ceremony, which recognised excellence across all the schools, the winners were presented with trophies by Mr Waite and Inspiration Trust Chairman Sir Theodore Agnew in recognition of their fantastic contributions to school life.
Mr Waite who was taken hostage in Lebanon in 1987 while negotiating the release of other Nina Torin prisoners addressed the 800-strong audience and explained the circumstances of his capture and the torment of his near five-year ordeal.
But he also talked about his work since release,
including working with schools and prisons where young people can be at risk of radicalisation.
He told the audience that schools are key to preventing the spread of fundamentalism and terror.
"There are many young people looking for something to believe in," he said.
"This is an increasingly complicated and confusing world, and as teachers you have a very important role in guiding young people, and helping them see the things that bring us together.

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB Anne Boleyn : Saint or Sinner?
This was the intriguing title of the first of Probus Club’s summer meetings, and the speaker, Brian Butcher, provided a good deal of mixed evidence regarding this controversial figure.
Henry VIIIth , desperate for a son and heir, abandoned his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, waited seven years to marry Anne Boleyn, and three years later her head was off.
Born at Blickling in 1501, she became Queen of England in 1533, and in the same year produced a daughter – to Henry’s great frustration - who was to become Queen Elizabeth 1st. In January 1533, she miscarried a male child and from this low point Anne’s tenure as Queen went into rapid decline. Charges of adultery, incest and even conspiring to bring about the King’s death were brought against her, with many holding that Thomas Cromwell was responsible for Anne’s demise.
On 19 May 1536, she was beheaded, and later that day Archbishop Cranmer issued a dispensation allowing Henry to marry Jane Seymour. It is uncertain whether Anne was ensnared by a conspiracy or was a victim of her own loose tongue, possibilities that have given endless novelists, not least Hilary Mantel, a rich source of material.
Had Anne Boleyn been living in more recent times, it is possible that she might have been given a better hearing under a fairer system such as our speaker, Paul Rosier dealt with in his talk in August. His ‘View from the Bench’ was lively, factual and full of anecdotes as he took us through the role and powers of the 22,000 magistrates in the UK. They are the first line of justice in cases ranging from simple motoring offences to murder, with maximum powers of up to £5000 in fines or imprisonment for up to six months. Offences beyond these penalties are moved on to Crown Courts, where Judges and Barristers enter the
arena. Whilst most market towns in the county used to have their own Magistrates Courts, this has now been reduced to three, at Norwich, Yarmouth and Kings Lynn. Anyone in North Norfolk breaking the law now faces a double punishment in a sense, a long journey to Court being one of them!
Paul made it clear that imprisonment is always avoided if possible, and that justice must always be tempered by mercy. Whilst there are a myriad of reasons why people find themselves denied freedom, it is a sad fact that 72% of men currently in prison have had no significant male figure in their lives, a poor reflection of the state of our wider society.

‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…’ We may only be only just past the Summer Bank Holiday, but attention is already turning to Christmas!
Whilst, for many, this is will be something to look forward to, Voluntary Norfolk is highlighting the plight of those for whom the prospect of the festive season may be a less happy occasion, and encouraging people across North Norfolk and Broadland to become part of the solution!
‘Christmas is often the focal point for many people experiencing loneliness’, according to Jonny Wood and Natalie Hickman, Voluntary Norfolk’s co-ordinators in North Norfolk, ‘but it is a year-round problem. Nowadays, when preparations for Christmas seem to begin even before summer has ended, this just underlines people’s sense of loneliness as they contemplate the likelihood of spending autumn and winter alone’. Jonny and Natalie run the North Norfolk Health Volunteers scheme, a befriending service run in partnership with North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which links volunteers with people who are experiencing long term health conditions which leave them socially isolated and less able to participate in

involved now so that volunteers can get started well before the clocks go back and the festive season takes over!
‘Volunteers can make an immense difference in a very short space of time’, according to Jonny and Natalie, ‘a weekly visit of maybe just an hour or two can leave people feeling that there is ‘someone out there’ who cares about them, and can dramatically reduce their sense of loneliness, even during the time they do spend by themselves.’ People often enquire about getting involved as Christmas approaches, but, as far as Jonny and Natalie are concerned, the earlier the better! ‘Our enrolment and induction process means it takes a little time before we can introduce a new volunteer to someone. If, for instance, a new enquirer contacts us in early December, we may not be able to get them introduced before Christmas. We are encouraging people to think about getting
If you would be interested in making a real difference to someone else’s life – not just for Christmas but in the run-up to it and beyond – then Jonny and Natalie would love to hear from you. You will need to be 18 years old or over, willing to undergo a DBS (police) check (which will be arranged at no cost to you) and provide two references, but in return you’ll get induction training on the basics of befriending, the ongoing support of a co-ordinator and, above all, the immense gratitude of someone who will be so pleased to share some of their life with you. For further details please contact Jonny Wood or Natalie Hickman at Voluntary Norfolk on 01263 519454 or northnorfolkvc@ voluntarynorfolk.org.uk . Alternatively, visit them at their office at Merchants’ Place, 16 Church Street, Cromer, NR27 9ES.
Celebrate the best of British – nominate now in the ‘Rural Oscars’
The 2016 Countryside Alliance Awards, nicknamed the ‘Rural Oscars’ and a gold standard of rural business awards, have opened to public nomination at www.countryside-alliance.org and invite contributions across four categories. The award categories are:
• • • •
Local Food & Drink Village Shop/ Post Office Tourism Enterprise Farm Enterprise (new in 2016)
The Rural Oscars recognise hard working rural business men and women and those who routinely go the extra mile for their community or help to preserve and protect rural life. The Awards have become the definitive rural award to win because they celebrate the characters behind the business and the efforts they go to, not just the business itself. Where there are many ‘taste’ awards for produce, or dry business awards, no other scheme honours people in this way. Our Awards celebrate the unsung heroes of the countryside and the work they do. The Awards invite nominations across four categories. Winners will be announced at a Parliamentary reception in March 2017, which will be supported by cross party Parliamentarians.
The awards, now in their 12th year, start with nominations from the public – in 2015 we received over 4,500. Nominations will be accepted until 4 November, whereupon a list of finalists will be drawn up by the judges and judging visits will take place. All finalists are invited to a reception at the House of Lords early in the New Year, where they will hear if the judges, having visited them, have selected them as the British Champions. Countryside Alliance Awards Director Jill Grieve said “The Rural Oscars have become the gold standard for rural business awards and I look forward to hearing the stories of this year’s nominees. These awards give a voice and a platform to rural businesses and bring them to national prominence, telling positive stories about the countryside. We can’t run these awards without the support of communities and their recommendations, so please get involved and tell us who we should be honouring this year.”

Museum volunteers needed The RNLI Henry Blogg Museum is looking to recruit more volunteers. The award winning volunteer team are inviting you join them.
The heritage of lifesaving at Cromer is a unique one and important nationally as Henry Blogg remains the most decorated volunteer of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The museum shares the history of the people of Cromer working together to save lives at sea. It is a story that continues to grow every year. Not everyone is willing or able to become lifeboat crew but you can still contribute by giving some of your time to the museum. There are a range of roles available - Boat Conservation,
Shop Sales, Gallery Assistant, Research, Collections Care and Learning Assistant. Experience is always appreciated but not necessary as training is provided.
‘We are looking for anyone aged 17 years and over who enjoys meeting new people and works well in a team,’ said Museum Manger Jacqui Palmer. ‘Whether you are looking to improve your CV or keep active and make new friends in your retirement, we

have some terrific roles.’ You can help the RNLI by inspiring visitors with stories of the courage and determination of Cromer lifesavers past and present. Approximately 45,000 people visit the museum every year. The interactive displays are popular with children and adults too. Trip Advisor currently recommends the museum as the number one thing to do in Cromer. The volunteer team won the ‘Volunteers of the Year’ award in May at the Museums and Heritage Show and Visit England awarded the museum the ‘Best Told Story’ accolade in 2015 and 2014. None of this would be possible without people like you giving their time to make it happen. If you are interested in volunteering for the RnLI, you are invited to find out more by calling on 01263 511294 or e-mail Blogg_Museum@RnLI.org.uk.
Application received for the designation of a Neighbourhood Area
An application has been received by North Norfolk District Council to designate the parish of Overstrand as a Neighbourhood Area.
The application, from Overstand Parish Council, is the first step towards preparing a Neighbourhood Development Plan, Neighbourhood Development Order or a Community Right to Build Order.
NNDC is running a four week consultation on the application, commencing Monday 5 September and ending Monday 3 October 2016.
A neighbourhood development plan can establish general planning policies for the development and use of land in a neighbourhood, for example where new homes and offices should be built and what they should look like. The plan can be detailed or general, depending
26
what local people want.
Neighbourhood plans allow local people to get the right type of development for their community, while still meeting the needs of the wider area. In most cases this will mean that neighbourhood plans have to take into account the local council’s assessment of housing and other development needs in the area.
A neighbourhood development order allows the community to grant planning permission for development that complies with the order. This removes the need for a planning application to be submitted to the local authority.
A community right to build order gives permission for small-scale, site-specific developments by a community group.
These initiatives were introduced as part of the Localism Act 2011. The application and map showing the boundaries of the proposed Neighbourhood Area is available to view or download at: www.northnorfolk.org/neighbourhoodareas
Any comments should consider whether the proposed Neighbourhood Area is appropriate to be designated for the purposes of neighbourhood planning. Those wishing to comment should send their response to planningpolicy@north-norfolk.gov.uk or Planning Policy Team, North Norfolk District Council, Holt Road, Cromer, Norfolk NR27 9EN For further information contact 01263 516318 or visit www.northnorfolk.org/ neighbourhoodplans

Norwich City Transfer Review
Many Norwich City fans were left feeling disappointed as the transfer window came to a close at the end of last month, with the Club not partaking in any business on the final day. Many fans felt another striker was needed however Norwich were unable to pull off any deals. This has left quite a few fans feeling pessimistic about the upcoming season and questioning the ambition and desire of the Norwich City board.
They do have reason to be cautious however as the only striker Norwich signed this window was Nelson Oliveira on a 4-year deal from Benfica having spent a season on loan at Nottingham Forest, scoring nine goals in 24 starts.
Nelson could end up being a shrewd piece of business but he was not the proven Championship striker Norwich fans were craving. Hopefully, Norwich have the firepower to get through the winter period ahead of the January window, where hopefully another striker can be added.
Norwich vs. Cardiff match Review
Norwich took on Cardiff City as the players returned after the two week international
break. Norwich turned out to be 3-2 victors after a late scare from Cardiff.
This was just the result Norwich needed after an incredibly poor performance in their last game away at Birmingham as they lost 3-0. Norwich took the lead through Cameron Jerome as he poked the ball past keeper Ben Wilson from close range, after scuffing his initial chance.
Cardiff did manage to give Norwich a late scare as ex Canary Anthony Pilkington scored with five minutes left on the clock, capitalising on some poor defensive work. After a nervy last few minutes, Josh Murphy reassured all home fans that the 3 points would be staying in Norfolk, with a beautiful goal curled into the bottom right corner, reminiscent of his effort vs. Blackpool 2 years ago. However, more shocks were still to come as Pilkington got a brace as he bundled in a goal during the dying minutes of extra time to end what was a frantic finale to

Although it was not the best performance from Norwich they did the job that was required and that was to get all 3 points.
The Canaries doubled their lead right before the hour mark as Russell Martin, starting for the first time this season, headed in from a corner by Jacob Murphy, who has a made a massive difference since coming back into the side after a loan spell at Coventry last year.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club
difference were Bob Allard and Jane Cosenza. Before the game we had a ‘Spider’. Now this is again one of those strange terms used in bowls that makes no sense. It’s a bit of fun only, with the winner normally winning a bottle of wine or possibly whisky. Place a Jack (the white ball) in the centre of the green with a coin placed on top. People taking part pay, normally £1.00 and then, stand around the green with one foot in the ditch. They bowl one bowl and when all movement has ceased the person whose bowl is nearest the coin – not the Jack - gets the prize! Why call it a Spider? Ask anyone who plays bowls and you get the same answer “We’ve always done so”. As each season draws to a close the club enters the Cawston BC Floodlight Competition. Federation League Captain Neil Carswell organises our teams. Starting at the end of August Cawston BC divide their green into 8 rinks and each evening four teams will play a game of triples. It is a knockout competition, with a Plate Trophy to play for by the teams who lose in the first round. Last year we lost in the first round, but won the Plate Trophy. This year in the first round we played against local rivals Holt and were successful. That meant that we had to win the competition as the Plate Trophy was not available. In the next round we played Cawston, and yes we lost! Some of the triples resulted in close games but the home team had the edge in the end. We have now started playing some of our club finals. Normally they would be played over two weekends, but unfortunately, as I previously stated, due to illness or varying bsences we have had to try and fit them in where we can. Not really satisfactory but we must get them played. The first final was the Handicap Singles between Bob Allard (-5) and Peter Bird (-4). Peter started with one shot on the board and then added a single and then 3 shots to lead 5 – 0. Bob came back with a 2, a single and his own 3 to lead 6 – 5.Peter then scored 3 but Bob then really took charge of the game. He was always in front and despite on odd single from Peter as the
Tales from the Bowling Green ...
and our season is quickly drawing to a close. We only have just over 5 months in a year to play all our league games, our friendly games and our club competitions. This year we have been very lucky with the weather. The green has been in great condition thanks to Bob the sprinkler and Neil and Phil cutting the grass at least three times a week with, as mentioned previously, support from Jackie early each morning with the swishing and tea making! First this time an apology. You may recall the Spoon Drive, well I omitted to mention Neil Patrickson who in fact was the equal overall winner with Pam Worrell, sorry Neil. We were delighted to welcome St Edmunsbury BC from, guess where, Bury St Edmunds for our annual game. They have been visiting us now for over 10 years and still enjoy our great town as well as the game of bowls. On Bank Holiday Monday there were a significant number of club members on the green playing club competitions and some others just having a ‘roll up’. At Cromer there is no additional fee to pay for these ‘roll ups’. We include any costs in our annual fees. That means that members can play on the green whenever they like subject to not all 6 rinks being used for a game. We then visited Swanton Abbott for a friendly. For this game we played the Federation code in a 2 wood triples format. The sun was so hot that day and the green which is somewhat smaller than Cromer nicely secluded and very quiet. Even the builders working on a bungalow next door to the green did not disturb us too much. Mind you we still lost on all four triples. President’s Day was also successful although we did have a small shower whilst we were playing. There were a large number of fancy hats as had been requested by President Bernice. We played an Australian Pairs competition [I will not try to explain the rules] and the winners with the biggest shot

game progressed Bob was the clear winner 22 – 12. In the Ladies 4 Wood Singles Final Jackie Purvis was competing against Ann Matthews. Jackie started well and was leading 8 – 0 before Ann scored a 3 to cut the deficit. Jackie then struck an excellent run of form to lead 16 – 4. A number of ends followed where shots were exchanged but in the end Jackie was the winner 22 – 9. Peter and Bob were up against each other again in the Men’s 4 Wood Singles. Peter started with a 3 but then was totally outplayed by Bob, only scoring one more shot until the score reached 17 – 4. Peter had a slight revival to make the score look more respectable but by drawing much more consistently Bob won his second title 21 – 14. The Mixed Pairs was played on the one really wet day we have had over the last 3 weeks. Bob Allard was again in the final playing with Bernice Billington against Roger Greef and Chrissy Laskey. I cannot give details of the game other than to say that Roger /Chrissy started well and had a good lead until Bob/Bernice clawed their way back from nowhere to leave the game as a draw after the allotted 21 ends. The rules dictate that an extra end has to be played and Bob/Bernice won that end and were the winners 24 – 23. The scorecard got so wet it fell to pieces hence my limited information! Further Final results will be reported next time. We then look forward to our presentation evening at the beginning of October. No forthcoming matches to advise.
