District Councillor to scale Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for charity Cllr Cox will be sleeping in a tent.

Cllr Hilary Cox will climb to 5,795m in five-day challenge for Multiple Sclerosis centre

Cllr Cox is raising money for The Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre in Norwich, the chosen charity of a friend who is also ascending Kilimanjaro. She said “I have been to the centre and it’s brilliant. It offers training for all types of neurological conditions, supporting people to keep moving through the learning of skills and crafts.

Councillor Hilary Cox is set to ascend Africa’s largest mountain just four months after having knee-replacement surgery at the age of 65. The Cromer District Councillor has already reached Everest Base Camp in an expedition five years ago, but will now fly to Tanzania to conquer dormant volcano Kilimanjaro.

Cllr Cox said “I am always up for a challenge especially when it’s for a good cause. If you keep yourself well and fit you have the potential to do more. My doctor wouldn’t give me a medical certificate for the trip because I had problems with my knee, so I had to have a new knee, and it’s working very well at the moment.” Cllr Cox has been in training by walking as much as possible and recently walked the Yorkshire Three Peaks. She added “The main training I’m doing is breathing. When I did the Everest Base Camp I had a bit of altitude sickness, so I am trying to make sure I can control that as much as possible while I am going up Kilimanjaro.”

“We are on track to raise £2,500 between the two of us and we hope to raise even more.” To donate please go to: mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/barryfoulser2

The trek up Kilimanjaro has different climate zones with tropical forest, volcanic and arctic conditions. For the five-day ascent and one-day descent

Pensthorpe Natural Parks new play barn incorporates a 300m2 indoor adventure centre and was commended by the judging panel for its innovative approach to design and sustainability.

Chair of the judging panel and Cabinet Member for Planning Cllr Sue Arnold said “This project has really excelled, not only in its unique architectural design but also in achieving its goal of being truly sustainable and providing an exciting new attraction for the District.

“The standard of entries in this 35th year of the Graham Allen Awards has been excellent. There was extremely stiff opposition and all those shortlisted can be incredibly proud.”

During the Council’s annual Greenbuild event, members of the public were also invited to vote for their favourite shortlisted 2016 Graham Allen project for the People’s Choice Award. The vote attracted more than 1,000 votes.

The winner of the People’s Choice Award was Sheringham Rail Station for the development of the town’s new tourist information centre, public toilets, platform footbridge and new retail units. The project was praised for its attention to detail, quality of workmanship and for improving the town’s services.

Sheringham Rail Station also won the Commended Award from the Judging Panel.

The Highly Commended Award went to The Stable Yard, Rectory Lane, Northrepps. The project involved the difficult challenge of converting a pair of derelict Grade II listed stables for new use whilst maintaining their original character and appearance.

THE STRAND CLUB

Our meeting on 14 September, held at the new time of 2 pm, was well attended and much enjoyed. Apologies were given by Kay and Jane. Kay's leg is still causing great trouble and Jane stayed with her whilst waiting for a doctor to visit.

Miriam has offered to help Josie with the Treasurer duties at least until our AGM and election of officers in March. This is much appreciated as Josie has now covered this job for 10 years and deserves a break. We welcomed a new member, Barbara Ashwin, and hope she will enjoy her afternoons with us. We also welcomed a visitor, Betty. Jackie had made some beautiful flower table

centres which were to be raffled at the end of the meeting. Josie and Miriam supplied some very tasty scones - some plain and some fruit - and Josie brought homemade gooseberry jam and clotted cream to go with them. Chris and Jackie made teas and coffees and everyone enjoyed a social afternoon. The bring and buy tables were explored for treasures and the flower displays were won by Jean, Anne Buxton, Gill, Miriam, Jackie and June. Jackie has donated hers to Kay which was a lovely gesture. There was quite a team of clearer-uppers afterwards, for which we are grateful. Our next meeting will again be at 2pm at the Pavilion on 12 October and will be a jewellery

The Great Escape‌ from a retirement home Greg Pope, of Pope and Co. Solicitors, based in Cromer, is working with the Sheringham Players on a hilarious play which will be on at the Sheringham Little Theatre in November.

Greg, who is an experienced actor and director himself, plays the part of Derek who helps two ladies who are on the run from the police!

The hilarious and cleverly written comedy is based on the storyline of the well -known film, ‘The Great Escape’, but instead of prisoners of war escaping from a POW camp in Germany, it’s two‌ er‌ mature ladies escaping from their residential home. The play is called ‘The Great Escape‌ from a retirement home’ and is written by Andy Powrie. Dorothy and her friend, Ruth, are both well-educated ladies who realise that their seemingly ideal residential home has become a well-furnished prison. They decide to escape, but all their efforts are thwarted by the unscrupulous director of the home, Troy Stanwick, aided by the head nurse, Phyllis. After several escape attempts, each more daring than the last, they finally escape and go on the run followed by the police, Troy Stanwick and Dorothy’s son, Roland.

Who will help them? Who can they trust? Do they escape, or are they brought back to the home in disgrace? All will be revealed in this rib achingly funny play... and yes, there is THAT motor bike jump! Tickets ÂŁ10 each from the Sheringham Little Theatre box office on 01263 822347

The show dates are Thursday 17 to Saturday 19 November, and the performances start at 7.30pm.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?

“It’s a common misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor, qualified Family Mediator and Collaborative solicitor.

As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. The common misconception is that a larger local firm or city firm is better but this is incorrect. A client just pays more.

When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I am one of the few solicitors that offffers a free first appointment so that clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision.

I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Crab and Lobster Quiche We remain open for dinner every night (6-9pm) as well as our wonderful Sunday lunch and Afternoon Teas – and we’re taking bookings for Christmas parties! - so do come in and see us soon.

This recipe is a real favourite on our Sunday lunch menu and makes the most of the fabulous shell fish we get in from John Davies in Cromer, recent recipient of Norfolk Food and Drink’s Outstanding Achievement award and very well deserved too! It’s perfect for these autumnal days when one still needs something quite light, but also filling, and it’s fairly easy to prepare to boot.

Seasoning

Mix flour and butter into breadcrumbs, gradually add water to form a smooth ball. Roll out and place over a tin, gently mould into shape with your fingers. For perfect edges use the rolling pin to nip off extra pastry. Use a fork to prick the bottom of the pastry, place baking powder then some rice or beans on top and put in the oven at 180c until nice and firm (about 20 mins) Put the crab and lobster in the bowl and season. Separately, mix the eggs and cream. Once the pastry is done, replace the rice and beans with the crab mix in and add the cream mix on top. Then simply sprinkle with the cheese. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.

FREE Spooky Fun at Bure Valley Railway!

Throughout the half term holiday, 22nd October to 30th October 2016, the Bure Valley Railway will be holding its popular children’s event, “The Spooky Express”. Trains will operate throughout each day from both Aylsham and Wroxham Stations (see timetable). A children’s competition to see how many spooky items can be spotted on the train journey, a colouring corner and a decorated Whilstlestop Café add to this themed event. Also, the Railway’s resident Bear will be dressed up for the occasion to welcome each train at Aylsham Station.

To make this a truly family friendly event, the Railway is giving free travel for every child when accompanied by a fare-paying adult (maximum of 2 children per adult, train only). No prior booking required.

Susan Munday, Business Manager and organiser of this event, says, “Children of all ages can enjoy lots of spooky fun without it being too scary!” Cromer Times 503 October 8th 2016

North Norfolk Different Strokes Association Charity Angling Event

Anglers were invited to a charity fish at Glenn Farm Fishery in Sustead last month.

Fishery manager, Claire Barrett, provided breakfast rolls and drinks and Rite Gear Angling Centre of West Runton sponsored bait for the event, which was organised by Douglas Hoy, Chairman of NNDSA.

Fishing on the day was slow with plenty of rain from lunchtime onwards but competitors braved the wet conditions to take a few small carp and 12

silver fish - heaviest weight on the day went to Martin Chase of Cross Street, Cromer.

Next Generation Tackle Ltd sponsored prizes, a travel rod and holdall, reel and landing net and handle, which was presented to Martin Chase. A total of £450 was raised by the attending anglers, which goes to NNDSA for use by members with rehabilitation activities such as gym with trained coach, aquarobics and the occasional social trip.

Many thanks to all those who helped organise and run the event, especially the anglers and friends who raised the much-needed funds. Doug Hoy Cromer Times 503 October 8th 2016

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Most people are now aware that our branch is run completely by volunteers with no paid staff involved in the work that we do. We give our time willingly but, obviously, this time is precious. We cannot always respond immediately to requests for help but do the best we can within the time we have available. When Stephanie receives calls for urgent help she will often spend hours trying to arrange something to help the caller and to find a solution. Sometimes people ask for help but do not answer calls when she rings back. This means that she has wasted a great deal of time which she could have used to better purpose, especially bearing in mind that, not only does she care for some of the cats, answer and deal with the calls to the cat phone, but she also works. A recent call from someone requesting urgent help for a stray cat with newborn kittens, because she would be moving that week, was something that

could not be left. Although all the pens were full and some fosterers were going on holiday, so cats were being moved temporarily to a cattery, she decided this was an instance where we could use the temporary pen in the shed to house this needy little family. Several phone calls were needed to ensure care would be in place and the pen and shed had to be made ready to take the temporary occupants. She advised the person caring for Panda this mum and kittens that we could help but she would need to get them to us. The person indicated she could not respond at that particular moment due to a health problem within the family and would get back to us. When she did not return the call, because of the urgency of the situation, Stephanie rang her back and left a message on the answer-phone. This and several more calls went unanswered. We can therefore assume that the person managed to find a place for the cats elsewhere. We have no problem with this as our concern was to make sure the cats would be safe. However, we regard it as being extremely rude of the person for not responding to our calls as this wasted a lot of time. If you should ever need help, please do not hesitate to ask us. If we are unable to give this we may, in some instances, suggest another solution or someone else who may be able to assist. However, having asked for help, please let us know if it is no longer required, as our free time is precious and we hate wasting it. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wi shing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Or visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Tourism boost for North Norfolk’s economy

North Norfolk’s popularity as a tourist destination is booming with day trippers and people enjoying ‘staycations’ boosting the region’s economy - that’s the verdict from the latest tourism report.

The Destination Research report on the Economic Impact of Tourism for 2015 released last month shows that in north Norfolk more than 10,000 people are employed in tourism related roles (either part-time or full-time) and that tourism is worth more than £484m to the area annually.

That figure has been growing year on year according to previous annual reports, from £415m in 2012, £434m in 2013 and £470m in 2014. This equates to more than a 16% increase across four years. During that same time period, the number of full time equivalent jobs in the sector has increased from 6,550 to 7,831, a rise of nearly 20%.

With more people visiting the area the sector supports local shops, pubs, cafes and transport services, bringing income to suppliers and producers and fuelling the wider north Norfolk economy.

The report highlights that in 2015 there were 7,950,700 trips to North Norfolk with 7,392,000 day trips and 558,700 staying trips (2,383,000 staying nights).

The report estimates that the value of overnight trips is more than £139m with day trippers spending more than £259m.

economy and it is essential to ensure north Norfolk continues to attract people and welcome them back time and time again.”

Cllr Nigel Dixon, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet member for Economic Development and Tourism, said “Anecdotally lots of people tell me – and I have seen it myself – that our towns and villages are attracting more and more visitors. These statistics back that up and help measure that growth in black and white.

“I’m not surprised that more and more people are waking up to the beauty of our district and deciding to spend their holiday time on our doorstep. North Norfolk is quite simply delightful and inspirational.”

Kayla Dunne, Brand Manager of Visit North

Norfolk, said “Our marketing campaign this year, Nip to North Norfolk, focused on how to enjoy the unique attributes of the north Norfolk coast and countryside, such as big skies, beaches and the Broads National Park, through a series of ‘how to’ films.

“Our campaign has reached a wide audience through TV adverts, radio promotion, PR and a social media campaign, which carries on throughout the winter and spring months, encouraging people to visit the area.”

North Norfolk District Council has supported Visit North Norfolk’s 2016 Nip To Norfolk Campaign to attract more people to the area to enjoy all the pleasures of the English coast – for example how to build a sandcastle, how to catch a crab and how to spot clouds.

Samuel enjoys abandoning the traditional flat canvas and instead paints onto used surfboards, life rings washed up on the beach and on old floor boards ripped up from the studio. ‘Although my collection is diverse in terms of style and subject, the main theme that runs throughout all of my paintings is that of ‘escapism’, in regard to the fact that all of the paintings capture idealistic perfect moments in life,’ explains Samuel Thomas. North Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery presents an exhibition of mixed media by Cromer resident Nigel Pearce. The new collection of work focuses on British aircraft in mixed media, from pencil drawings to painting, photography and modelling. A selection of other work by the artist is also on display. Nigel Pearce was born in Hammersmith, London and moved to Norfolk in 1990. He is a serving Cromer District Councillor. Nigel’s aeronautical fascination started at the age of four when he experienced the immense size and noise of a de Havilland Comet, the first commercial jetliner, flying low over his London home. Following on from this experience, and supported by a three-year arts appreciation course, Nigel’s aim has always been to produce a lifetime collection of work that demonstrates his passion for flight and the strong aeronautical history associated with East Anglia. Nigel said “East Anglia has links to the dawn of aviation that Britain has maintained to the modern day. Aircraft are beautifully manufactured by man and the models here also make them extremely interesting to even the casual observer.” Nigel’s passion has also been expressed in his book Target Taranto, published in 2013, detailing a lesser-known Second World War air raid that potentially changed the shape of warfare. Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said “This is a really interesting exhibition with very wide appeal. It is great to be able to offer new or established artists a space to exhibit their works. It is often the boost they need to gain a wider audience or to develop their talents further.” Flight+ runs 23 September to 22 November at the NNDC offices gallery in Holt Road, Cromer. The 1st Floor Gallery is open to the public Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8.30am-5pm; Wednesday 10am-5pm; Friday 8.30am-4.30pm. NNDC seeks to offer free opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit gallery and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually.

Festival launches 2016 Community Grant scheme

The Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival has announced it will be handing out £5,000 to local organisations through its Community Grant Scheme.

The Festival committee announced the total after the success of this year’s dinky beach hut auction.

Since the Festival’s first charity auction in 2010, the organisation has donated more than £33,000 to local projects.

Charities and organisations based in the Cromer and Sheringham area can now apply to the scheme, which aims to benefit local good causes.

On Sunday, 28 August, the 7th Crab & Lobster Festival came to a close with the annual auction which saw 102 decorated beach huts go under the hammer.

Earlier in the year, the huts formed the Festival’s art trail and were displayed in businesses across Cromer and Sheringham. Over 400 individuals had a hand in decorating the huts, which were sponsored by local

businesses.

Organisations and charities in the Cromer and Sheringham area can apply for grant funding for specific projects or for work that they would like to embark on.

Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “The Festival thought it vital to continue supporting charities local to Cromer and Sheringham which provide exceptional support to the local community.

“We are welcoming applications from organisations or charities based in and around Cromer and Sheringham. Projects or activities can include local community events, groups, sporting activities, and the purchase of specialist equipment. This list is not exclusive however and we urge anyone to get in touch to find out more.”

Applications should be received by Saturday, 19 November 2016.

To apply for a grant organisations should fill in the application form which is available to download from the Festival’s website or by emailing enquiries@crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk.

SHANTYMEN IN A SHARING MOOD

Sheringham Shantymen have hatched a cunning plan to avoid accusations of reigniting fiery “Crab Wars” passions as they plan another daring cross-border raid under the cloak of darkness.

The popular singing group staged a sell-out concert on Cromer Pier last year to crown 25th anniversary celebrations. Several local charities collected handsome cheques as a result. Now the Shantymen are looking forward to a rousing return to the Pavilion Theatre in early November – with proceeds being shared equally between Sheringham and Cromer Lifeboats. “I think this arrangement shows that not only do we come in peace, but that we are determined to build as many new bridges as possible.

It’s not only Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft who need them!” quipped musical director Brian Farrow. “We have savoured another highly successful season of gigs near and far after those anniversary jollifications and we’re delighted to return to our neighbouring town to set the seal on continued success.”

Cromer-based writer, broadcaster and entertainer Keith Skipper has again been invited to make the Shantymen feel welcome and remind them how to behave in what many consider to be north Norfolk’s premier seaside resort.

“There’s a very thin line between healthy rivalry and open conflict. It’s my job to ensure all goes as smoothly as possible. A few cheap laughs at the Shantymen’s expense could well creep into proceedings” said Mr Skipper.

Making Waves Again promises another top class musical treat on Sunday, 6 November at 7.30pm. Tickets are available now at £10 (concessions £9) from the Pier Pavilion Theatre Box Office on 01263 512495.

In the past you could have a surgical face-lift for not very much more so I was reluctant to do a thread lift at such a higher price point. Now these advantages have resultant in a resurgence of interest in thread lifts. A thread lift enables two joint actions: • A lift effect as soon as threads are applied for an immediate and discreet result. • A regenerative effect, for progressive and natural results.

How is the procedure performed?

ALDIS MOTORS LTD

No special preparation is required prior to Silhouette Soft® treatment. After a small local anaesthetic, the doctor inserts the thread under the skin to a depth of about three to five millimeters. No incision is required, as the suture is inserted using a fine needle. It is held in place with absorbable cones. Once the suture as been applied, the doctor performs slight compression of the tissue to reshape it by hand and to obtain the desired lifting effect. The non-inserted ends of the suture are cut off. One or more sutures may be applied, depending on the patient and treated area.

Overstrand Evening WI

In September members welcomed Icarus Hines to their meeting to talk on Butchery.

Icarus is well-known in the area for his unusual name taken from Greek mythology as much as for his butchery. He told members he is one of six children who all have unusual names. His career as a butcher started in 1975 as a Saturday boy for a local butcher`s shop. He went on to catering college but drifted back from where he started in 1980 as Manager now at another butchery chain. He learnt his craft there and started trading under his own name in Cromer in 1990. He has sold meat products catering for the many changing trends over the years and says that now a butcher needs to be part butcher and part chef. Food scares have led to much more paperwork. His top sellers nowadays are traditional cuts and value added meals, this time of year, barbecue foods and two tons of sausages a week!

The October meeting will bring us a representative from the East Anglian Air Ambulance to which new members and visitors will be welcome. You do not have to be an Overstrand resident to join us at our meetings and walks. Meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm at the Parish Hall, Overstrand. We look forward to meeting you.

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

Moira Neville gave an interesting demonstration entitled ‘The Gift’ at our September meeting.

Althought her flowers were traditional, some of her mechanics were contemporary giving us thought for imagination. For one arrangement entitled ‘The Gift of Love’, Moira used red Naomi roses and a handmade voile heart. Moira also judged our competition with Best in Show going to Liz Crane.

Our next meeting will be on Monday 17 October at 7.20pm at Cromer Junior School with Jean Crane demonstrating ‘All Kinds of Everything’. Visitors are always welcome.

Food Market & Craft Fair at Garden Centre Overstrand is a huge success On Sunday 25 September Garden Centre Overstrand, supported by Sheringham based events company Ruth Elizabeth Events, hosted its first ever Food Market & Craft Fair, and what a huge success it was.

Over 600 people attended the event, packed with over 20 local exhibitor stalls, along with Radio Norfolk who featured the event on the popular Sunday morning show, Treasure Quest, where David & Sophie found the treasure hiding in a trick by local magician Robert Rathbone.

The event raised £128 for Break Charity and the lucky winner of the hamper packed full of £100 worth of garden goodies was Mrs H from Cromer.

Victoria Sheridan, new owner at Garden Centre Overstrand, said ‘As this was the first time we had held an event like this we did not know what sort of turnout to expect but it is clear we need not have worried. It was fantastic to see so many people at the event’.

A Christmas event is now being planned for Sunday 6th November so make a note of the date in your diaries.

For more information or to book an exhibitors stand please contact Ruth Lowe on 07747 161880 or info@ruthelizabethevents.co.uk

Investment in Cromer’s West Promenade Million pound plus investment for jobs and the tourist economy

The District Council is committed to making a number of investments in Cromer to increase the facilities for visitors and residents as part of a four year programme to enhance jobs and the tourism economy.

Investment this year has seen improvements along the West Promenade from the zig-zag path to the Melbourne Slope with the refurbishment of the viewing turrets, and path including installation of solar lighting, and external repairs to the Art Deco block costing £110,000 in total.

The disabled parking has been made fully compliant and its repositioning provides safer, clearer access for all along the prom.

Works are now being taken forward to provide new promenade lighting and arrangements made to install new public toilets, catering kiosk and themed children’s play equipment near the Anglian Water Pumping Station next Spring ready for the 2017 summer season.

As part of the improvements to the West Promenade, the Council is now seeking a private investor to help bring the Art Deco block to life and realise its commercial potential.

Cllr John Rest, Cabinet Member for Assets said “We are seeking a private sector partner to take the Art Deco block onto the next stage and ensure it is a viable business proposition helping to draw visitors and local residents to this part of the town.”

Adverts are going out to highlight the business potential of the building to find someone who can provide further investment to fit out the facility and offer a unique and unrivalled facility for all visitors to the promenade.

Cllr Rest added “We are looking to encourage innovation and build a tourist destination which is unrivalled on the east coast. At this stage we are open minded as to the potential use of the site and keen to ensure that the successful proposal will serve all visitors to the West Promenade and help to improve the district’s tourism offer and extend the tourist season.”

Golden Bullet, Silver Screen?

By Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

In a discussion document entitled Strengthening Tax Avoidance Sanctions and Deterrents, the government has provided more information following its announcement in the Budget that it would ‘explore options to introduce downsides for those who enable tax avoidance’. Ministers are said to be frustrated that even when HM Revenue and Customs defeat schemes such as the vehicles designed to exploit tax reliefs for film-making, as are beloved by glamorous celebrities and successful people in all walks of life, the advisers to the schemes can still pocket their professional fees.

More than 1,600 people were named in the Liberty £1.2billion tax avoidance scheme, making it the largest avoidance scheme ever marketed. Investors included celebrities, top businessmen, criminals, doctors, lawyers and even a judge. It centred on a music industry investment scheme. Another company Ingenious marketed tax-efficient film industry investment schemes. Many celebrities with ‘right on’ credentials have been exposed, to the delight of the media. 26

But, have the General Anti-Avoidance Regulations now gone too far? The developments are disquieting. The bill raises the spectre of retrospective penalties against advice given in good faith.

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury has stated that those who provide the services that enable aggressive tax avoidance ‘should bear real risks and costs for their choices’. The Financial Times commented that ‘taking battle to the supply side of the tax avoidance industry is sensible’. Existing sanctions do nothing to deter the sale of ‘off-the-shelf-schemes’, as a barrister’s opinion backing them has to-date been enough to validate them.

The proposals for how the new regime will work have prompted widespread unease in the financial professions. There has always been a fundamental principle that arranging ones affairs in such a way as to pay less tax is not illegal. This remains a cornerstone of tax planning, but this is slowly being chipped away. In the Government’s desire to respond to public concern about massive tax evasion by

Norwich City FC Review

Since my last review of Norwich’s home game against Cardiff, the Canaries have been flying high, ever since going on an unbeaten run of five games in all competitions.

After Cardiff, Norwich were paid a visit by newly promoted Wigan in the midweek kick off. Norwich played quite poorly on the day, however bright spark Jacob Murphy, who is having a real breakout season this year alongside twin Josh, scored two goals to give Norwich a 2-1 home win after Jordi Gomez pulled one back for Wigan late in the second half.

which not many Norwich fans expected to progress past. Steven Naismith scored against his old club as his scuffed shot managed to loop over the helpless Marten Stekelenburg. After the break, Norwich continued to resist the swarm of Everton attacks as Josh Murphy scored an absolute wonder goal, taking the ball past two players before rifling home a 20 yard shot.

After the win against Wigan, Norwich then faced tough opposition in the form of Nottingham Forest as they travelled away. Norwich had a very poor start to the game as they went behind just before half time, as Greek striker Vellios prodded Forest ahead after a defensive lapse in concentration by Norwich. However Norwich performed a remarkable comeback as they came back from 1-0 down to win 2-1, after goals from Howson and Dorrans, with the latter’s goal being a fine volley from the edge of the box with the Forest keeper stranded.

Most recently, Norwich faced newly promoted Burton Albion, a game which, if they won and other results went in their favour, could put them top of the table. Norwich won 3-1 after goals from Olsson, Jacob Murphy and a first ever career goal for fan favourite Ivo Pinto, as he topped off a good home performance with a nice run and finish in the dying embers of the match.

After beating Forest, Norwich then faced a trip to Merseyside to face Everton in the League cup, a game

green availability helps us to entertain such teams. They also followed a similar routine and I am sure that shops and cafes in the town were well supported in the time they were with us. Whilst we lost the game against the strong Monmouthshire Touring side we did manage a win against Kings Langley. That is an extra bonus for us! In the competitions the Pairs final was between Bob Allard/George Baker and Neil Carswell/Neil Patrickson. There was one shot each on the first two ends. Then shots were shared with the two Neil’s getting the better of the exchanges to lead 10 – 3 Bob/George then managed to make inroads into the score and gradually reduced their deficit to 10 – 12. They then took the lead for the first time on the 15th end, out of the 21 to play, 13 - 12. Then surprisingly, because the game had been very tight, Bob/George moved ahead on each end to win 22 – 13. The other final

Tales from the Bowling Green ...

... where we have now concluded our friendly games, but ‘roll ups’ continue and some outstanding finals have been played. We had two wonderful friendly games against touring teams from Monmouthshire Bowling Association and Kings Langley BC. The men from Wales arrived at lunchtime and then went into town for to explore the town before returning to sample our bar. The game was played in great spirit and at the end in the clubhouse, after the normal speeches and presentations, we were rewarded with a song from the players. We subsequently received a very nice card from the organiser expressing his thanks for such an enjoyable day and hospitality by all. The final visitors from Hertfordshire were also on a tour to Norfolk and again the attraction of the town as well as the bowling

Yoga at Autumn Equinox

On Thursday 22 September Vee Zappia along with two friends, Ruth Hedges and Debbie Mason, organised an open air yoga event to celebrate the Autumn Equinox, to raise funds for the Ellen Mezzetti Memorial Fund for Epilepsy Research UK. Around 60 people attended and the weather, the environment and the whole feel of the occasion was truly magical.

Ages ranged from 3 years to 75 years. There was also a small raffle for which a few local small businesses had donated prizes – our grateful thanks to them. The total raised in just over an hour was an amazing £500.

to be played was the two wood singles, where 21 shots has to be scored to win, between Roger Greef and Peter Bird. It started as a close game with shots being exchanged and after 5 ends Roger led 4 – 3; after 11 ends it was 7 – 7. At 16 ends Roger led 13– 8 and looked to be going on to take a relatively easy win. After 20 ends he led 17 - 9 but then Peter put in a challenge although Roger continued to lead after 25 ends 18 – 13, after 27 ends 19 – 15, after 29 ends 19 – 16, and after 30 ends 20 – 18. He then got the final shot he needed to take the game to win 21 – 18 after the pair had played 31 ends. By the time you read this the Club Presentation Evening will have taken place and only the Annual General Meeting on 8 October is outstanding. I will do one final report for this season to conclude the final results in the next issue.
