BERTIE & THE BANDITS - POPPYLAND SONGS
Continued from front cover... Life in this remote rural part of north Norfolk was very different in those halcyon days before the London journalist Clement Scott first encountered the remains of St Michael and All Angels church in Sidestrand. So inspired was he by the lonely tower standing at the cliff edge, surrounded by waves of wild poppies, that he described it as The Garden of Sleep, and so created the romantic mystique of Poppyland.
Kards & Bits 25 Tucker Street Cromer (behind the church)
But these original songs and poems pre-dated Clement Scott. Local historian Kit Hood recorded the words as remembered by the folk of Sidestrand and neighbouring parishes. However, she did not record the tunes, and only now have they been set to music by her great-great niece Bertie Anderson-Haggart.
As a child, Bertie was familiar with the hand written words in the leather bound note books, as she was born and raised in Kit Hood’s house opposite the church in Sidestrand.
Bertie will be performing these previously unknown songs, and some of her own written to commemorate the joy of Poppyland history, singing with her sister Evie Anderson, and their professional musician friends from London, violinist Anne-Marie Kirby, ‘cellist Rhiannon Lock, and Emma Price on flute and accordion. The songs include tales of the Maid of the Mill, Louie Jermy, the elegant daughter of the Overstrand miller, Sally Bean, the local gin smugglers’ favourite moll, The Mundesley Shepherd’s ode to the Mun Beck river, and the
extraordinary story of Sidestrand church being moved inland by Sir Samuel Hoare (father of Kit Hood and MP for Norwich), leaving only the medieval tower to its fate on the cliff edge. The concert tells how the collapsing tower and the First World War swept a whole way of life into the history books.
Both Bertie and Evie’s first music lessons were with Cromer postman Terry Keeler on piano, and Bertie learned violin with Norman Moor when she was 4 years old. They both attended Overstrand Belfry primary school before receiving scholarships to the Purcell Music School, and the Royal College of Music and Birmingham University.
Bertie is currently musical arranger, voice and viola player in the BeauBowBelles band and the Bowjangles string quartet and appropriately her daughter is called Poppy.
Evie has returned from London to teach singing and music in and around Cromer and is voice coach to the Sheringham Little Theatre productions.

North Norfolk District Council, in partnership with Broadland District and Kings Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Councils, has awarded a new pest control preferred supplier contract. The joint procurement contract with Millennium Pest Control Ltd will lead to savings for residents across the three councils and the introduction of a new online booking system to streamline services, giving people the opportunity to book 24/7. Cllr Tom FitzPatrick Leader of North Norfolk District Council “We’re really pleased to have Millennium Pest Control as our approved contractor and that working on a joint procurement basis with Kings Lynn and Broadland has allowed us to negotiate very good rates for all our residents. “If you experience a problem with pests in your

home you are guaranteed a service costing significantly less than market rates.” From 1 October 2016 anyone in the three council areas experiencing a problem with pests, such as bed bugs, rats, fleas, cluster flies, carpet beetles, mice, wasps, or cockroaches, should contact Millennium Pest Control via their council website. Cllr John Fisher, Broadland District Council’s portfolio holder for environmental excellence, said “This new contract shows excellent partnership working between district councils, and one that delivers great value services for our residents in Broadland.” A new online booking system will ensure residents’ concerns are dealt with as soon as possible. And for an extra charge, there will be an express service. Millennium Pest Services will deliver quarterly reports to each council ensuring their environmental teams are aware of services provided and any complaints made. If there are wider pest control issues in any of the council areas, these will be tackled as normal by the councils’ enforcement teams.

Spooky goings on in North Norfolk this Hallowe’en
In the build-up to this year’s All Hallows’ Eve, North Norfolk District Council is organising some ghoulish events for all the family!
Countryside Team is gearing up for some frighteningly good events in the week before Hallowe’en. Everyone should put the dates in the diary – these are going to be great fun.
In Bacton Woods and Holt Country Park you can follow our trail through the magical woods and discover the myths and legends of the areas.
On Monday 24 October enjoy the Hallowe’en Trail at Holt Country Park between 10am and 12pm, or at Bacton Woods on Thursday 27 October between 10am and 12pm. And at 2pm on Monday 24 October join our Fungi Walk at Holt Country Park.

effectively to protect the character of your local community? There is strong protection for ‘natural beauty’ within (and close to) the AONB within national and local planning policy and guidance, which might help you. The planning system is one of the most important tools for keeping the Norfolk Coast such a special place.
October half-term and Christmas sports activities
North Norfolk District Council announces October half-term and Christmas holiday activity options.
Get ahead of the game and check out what is on offer at North Norfolk District Council’s community sports centres during October half term and the Christmas holidays.
Activities for both holidays have been included in the latest brochure, which is available online at www.north-norfolk.gov.uk and will be distributed via schools in the coming weeks. Events at Cromer, North Walsham and Stalham sports centres include roller skating, football, street dance, trampolining, dodgeball, badminton, logic games, Christmas arts and crafts, playground games, ball games, pirates and capture the flag.
Becky Palmer, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said “Planning for school holidays can be a challenge, but with these activities children can
have a healthy and enjoyable time while making new friends in a professionally run environment. “There is a wide range of choice, from the very active to the less so - such as logic games and crafts. “Check out the brochure, there are plenty of opportunities to be had.
Costs range from ÂŁ2.50 for sports sessions to ÂŁ9.50 for day activities. Different activities are aimed at a range of age groups.
The brochure also carries details of October half term events at Bacton Woods and Holt Country Park - Halloween trails and a fungi walk guided by an expert.
And there are also details of birthday party packages at the sports centres and plans for 2017.
Planning in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Confused about planning and how to respond
Information on how to get involved in planning consultations has recently been improved and updated on the Norfolk Coast Partnership web site – see www.norfolkcoastaonb.org.uk/partnership/ get-involved-in-planning/1130
It includes ’10 top tips’ for involvement in planning decisions and links to our ‘planning and development’ section, with more detailed information on relevant local and national plans and policies, commenting on plans and proposals, developing a planning application in the AONB and Neighbourhood Plans, plus a link to information about work we are doing to try to keep the night skies in the AONB dark, so everyone can enjoy the constellations and wildlife is not affected.

New Norfolk Beers Shop now open in Sheringham The Giddy Goat shop owner John Morgan opened the doors to his store for the first time in mid-September.
John himself comes from Berkshire. Attracted by Norfolk’s beautiful beaches and, of course the beers, he has settled in North Norfolk. The Giddy Goat is John’s first beer shop.
The Tipples Brewery from Salhouse has a large range and their ‘Black Moth Stout’ at 7.6% is one of the strongest drinks available in the shop.
There is also Cider from The Norfolk Cider Company from Wroxham, which has been in production for over 30 years, and Whin Hill Cider who are based in Wells.
Poppyland is based in Cromer whilst relatively recent to the market they have already won awards for their beers and do a changing and interesting range of gluten free ales.
The shop offers beers and ciders from over 15 local breweries in the Norfolk area. John’s rule for his suppliers is that they must be small and Norfolk based.
The Giddy Goat’s suppliers include the popular Beeston Brewery, well respected, with a range of year round and winter ales on the shelves and the Wagtail Brewery, which is based in Attleborough which has many strong Ales to try and has been going strong for 8 or 9 years and, like many local breweries, started as a hobby and blossomed into a thriving business. Some of the interestingly named beers like ‘Chocolate Nutter’ and ‘Hare of the Dog’ are from The Whynot Brewery which is based in Norwich.
The beers in the shop are arranged vertically by supplier on the shop shelves. The bottles are further arranged vertically by beer type with lighter beers to the top and the dark beers to the bottom, and go from 3.2% up to 7.6%.
Come on by for a look. All beers are bottle conditioned, 80-90% are vegan suitable. The beers are sold in presentation boxes or can be bought as single bottles.
‘Stubbs Mugs’ and various Breweries beer glasses are also sold as associated products again from Norfolk suppliers.
WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?
The Giddy Goat is situated on 2, The Courtyard, Station Road, Sheringham, NR26 8RF.
To check stock call John Morgan on 01263 478600 or mobile 07786 288916. Opening hours Mon – Saturday 10-5 Sunday 11 – 4.

“It’s a common misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor, qualified Family Mediator and Collaborative solicitor.
As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. The common misconception is that a larger local firm or city firm is better but this is incorrect. A client just pays more.
When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I am one of the few solicitors that offffers a free first appointment so that clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision.
I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Addition to car park and toilet plans on part of North Lodge Park Specially designed toilet added to planning application
A new Changing Places toilet for people to use in Cromer has been added into North Norfolk District Council’s plans for the new toilets and car park on part of North Lodge Park.
A campaign for the Changing Places toilet was launched on social media in recent weeks. After seeing the support for the initiative online, Cllr John Rest, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Assets, asked for the facility to be included in the designs for the new toilets.
Cllr Rest said “I’m delighted to say that we have altered our design for the new toilets to

Iron Horse back in the saddle
Over 350 members and shareholders had a special treat at an event held for them on 1 October at North Norfolk Railway.
Visitors to the railway’s Weybourne workshops were delighted to see the M&GN Society’s ‘Iron Horse’, War Department 2-10-0 locomotive 90775 boiler reunited with its chassis and wheels – a visual milestone in the process of the loco’s expected return to service early next year in time for the start of the 2017 season.
Society Chairman, Neil Sharpe, said ‘Trustees and members are really pleased with the progress being made. The ‘Iron horse’ really is back in the saddle’.
The Society awarded the contract for the locomotive’s overhaul to the recently established engineering division of the North Norfolk Railway, which has received considerable investment from the Railway in new facilities and expertise to enable the complete overhaul of locomotives without the need to send them away. It can also undertake work for other heritage lines and locomotive owners.
The work on the WD included the complete refurbishment of the horn guides, axle boxes and wheel sets. Optical alignment equipment was used to ensure the accuracy of these components and complex plate renewals were done in the new boiler shop.
Following the successful steam test earlier in the month, the boiler was reunited with the loco chassis in late September. This is a major step in the completion of the overhaul.
Mr Sharpe said ‘The Members and Shareholders’ Day was a huge success giving visitors a wonderful opportunity to see the railway at work and what goes on behind the scenes to make the operation of the railway so successful. The opportunity to see the newly ‘mated’ boiler and chassis was an added bonus and whetted appetites for its return to service in 2017’.
Trevor Eady General Manager added ‘the WD is the first complete locomotive overhaul to be processed by the newly established department at the North Norfolk Railway. Our staff have demonstrated the capabilities of the new facility, which now has a growing order book for overhaul works including some from Europe’.
The locomotive WD 90775 was built

at Glasgow in 1943 as part of an order for the Ministry of Supply. The engine from new was sent abroad to work, and never worked for British Railways. It was repatriated for preservation in 1984, and has been working on the NNR since 2003. It was purchased by the M&GN Society in 2006. The engine is numbered 90775, as the last engine of the same design in BR stock was numbered 90774.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER flower heads of the small, DAHLIAS multi-spiked medium and giant cactus cultivars, the
Over a period of 18 months, a dedicated team of staff and volunteers at Blickling Hall have turned a neglected events field into a beautiful, productive walled garden, similar to the one that supported the estate up to the late 1930s.
The walled garden produces vegetables and cut flowers and is edged with over 150 fruit trees and it has been interesting to visit the garden regularly as the restoration takes shape. In each season there have been things of interest and the current star of the show is the display of dahlias.
Dahlias have been in and out of fashion since they arrived in Britain from Mexico some 200 years ago. However, current gardeners are again discovering that dahlias are easy to grow and bring wonderful colour to the late summer garden. There are few other plants that produce flowers in such an array of colours reds, purples, mauves, pinks, yellows, magenta, orange, apricot and white. There are also the different sizes and flower shapes. The tightly packed perfectly formed petals of ball and pompon dahlias, the
simple single-flowered forms, the water-lily varieties and many others.
Some people consider that dahlias can be garish but they come in such a variety of shapes, sizes and colours that there is a plant for every taste and varieties that will fit into every colour scheme. Anyone with dahlias in their garden will now be preparing to protect them for the winter. There are many different ideas on how this should be done. Many gardeners lift their dahlia tubers at the beginning of November or after the first hard frost, whichever comes first. Lifting the tubers is also necessary if slugs are a problem but if the garden is relatively free of such pests, sheltered and with free draining soil you might get away with planting deeply and then giving winter protection with straw or bracken.
If you decide to bring
the tubers in cut them down to 6 inches from the soil after the first frost blackens them and dig up the tubers carefully, shaking off any soil. Put them upside down in a seed tray or box for a week or so until any water drains from the hollow stems. When the stems are drained, turn the tubers the right way up and stack them together in a box, covered with old potting compost – keeping the crowns uncovered. They must be dry but not left to dry out completely and should be checked once a month and watered if they are getting too dry. Store the tubers in a dark, dry, frost and rodent free place.
About mid-February the tubers can be potted up and with a little heat shoots are produced to provide cuttings to grow on for next year’s plants. If you are not going to take cuttings, plant the overwintered tubers about 6 inches deep in early April in good rich soil in full sun. The new shoots will appear above the soil about a month later. CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY Judging for the competition for schools took place just before the start of the summer holidays.
Gresham Village Primary and Nursery won for the second year running but it was a close run thing with Suffield Park Infants and Aldborough Primary very close behind. It is heartening to see the enthusiasm of the youngsters who took part and the hope is that this enthusiasm will be carried over into their adult lives. Many appreciated the fun that can be enjoyed from gardening, especially the pupils from Aldborough who won the biggest radish competition! The winning school will be presented with a white hornbeam by our President, Bill LeGrice.
After the summer break, members came out in force to support our autumn show. Jennifer Andrews was first in both the ‘Flowers’ and ‘Handicraft’ sections, Jenny Pawson was first in the ‘Flower Arranging’ section and Anne Frostick won the ‘Vegetable’ section and ‘Best In Show’ with her fantastic container of mixed vegetables. Our November meeting begins with our AGM. This will be followed by a presentation promoting the work of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. This year marks the 90th anniversary of the founding of the NWT. It was the first wildlife trust to be set up in the UK and its work in protecting and developing the county’s natural surroundings is inestimable. The meeting is on Wednesday 9 November at 7.30 pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. Visitors are very welcome.

Walking Festival
Half term looms, and parents and youngsters are thinking about things they could do together, or indeed, separately.
The problem can be finding something that has elements that will delight everyone in the party.
What we can offer on Sunday 23 October, as part of the Norfolk Walking Festival, is a day out that won’t break the bank.
The walk starts at 10am at Blakeney Village Hall and finishes at 3pm. Under 16’s are free when accompanied by two adults. If unaccompanied, then they will have to pay the standard price.
‘Do Different’ in North Norfolk, walks a stretch of the Coast Path, with stops at Morsto n, Stiffkey, Cockthorpe and Langham Airfield. Walkers will see what makes this part of our county different, its wildlife and built heritage and will hear about local people who achieved fame and infamy, from long ago up to events of yesterday. The final visit will be to Langham Dome, larger on the inside than out, Norfolk’s own ‘Tardis’, packed with information and interactive activities. The charge covers entry to the Museum and return to Blakeney via mini-bus. All this for little more than a pint of beer!
To book contact don@walkcromer.co.uk 01263 514955 or visit www.norfolkwalkingfestival.co.uk
Mundesley and District SSAFAgettes
The inaugural meeting of the new SSAFA fundraising action group, the Mundesley and District SSAFAgettes was well attended.
Jenny Lambert led the meeting, first introducing Stuart Fidler, the Norfolk SSAFA chairman who presented the aims of SSAFA and recounted the stories of local beneficiaries. The discussion continued as to how the ladies will work together to fundraise for Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen Families Association (SSAFA).
The scheduled SSAFA Christmas Fayre on Saturday morning, 26 November in Coronation Hall, Mundesley, promises to be a pre-Christmas treat with new stalls, crafts and gifts – simply everything you need for Christmas. This event follows on from past, very successful RBLWS fayres. Please put the date in your diary and come and support us.
In the meantime, the next meeting of the Mundesley and District SSAFAgettes will be at 2pm on 16 November in Coronation Hall, Mundesley. Do come and join our merry band of ladies. Whether your interest is purely social or whether you have a talent for up-cycling, fundraising or helping at the Christmas Fayre, we would love to see you at the meeting.

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB
One of the most impressive sights in Norfolk is the vast number of boats on the Broads, with hundreds visible from a vantage point such as Wroxham Bridge.
Yet among these hundreds there are one or two gems from the past, as Roger Watt, himself a Probus member, made clear in his well- illustrated talk at our lunch meeting on 4 October. ‘The restoration of the wherry Albion` is a story of the skill and dedication of a handful of volunteers based at Ludham.
Originally launched in October 1898, the ‘Albion` was one of over three hundred of these iconic vessels trading on the Broads, but unique in Norfolk in that it was the only one ‘carvel built’, that is having a smooth hull compared with the others that were clinkers. With its huge black 110 square metre sail hanging from its 16 metre mast, the Albion could transport 40 tons of cargo and was crewed by a man and a boy.
In 1949, the dilapidated boat was bought by the Norfolk Wherry Trust, has been lovingly restored to its former glory and now features on the National Historic Ships Register. It is still trying to earn its keep and can be chartered, with crew provided, for the day or, with bunks now fitted in the hold, overnight. A good idea for a special celebration perhaps.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 1 November at The Links Hotel, West Runton and if you are a retired or nearly retired professional or business man and would like to join us please contact our lunch secretary, Dave Vickery, on 01263 824306 or, to find out more about our club, visit our website www.candsprobus.club

Northrepps Film Society - Local film night
On Thursday 3 November, Northrepps Film Society is showing two local-themed films: North Norfolk Railway: The Poppy Line, a 30-minute journey on the heritage route looking at points of interest along the way and Overstrand: Our Village Past and Present, a fascinating survey of the village from geological times to the present. The narrator of this film, Eddie Anderson, will be present to take questions from the audience. Tickets are £5.
Looking further ahead, on 1 December the Society is showing a guided film tour of the blockbuster art exhibition Painting the Modern Garden, featuring the work of artists such as Monet, Van Gogh and Matisse with expert commentary from curators, painters and garden enthusiasts. December tickets will be £7.50.
Both shows are at Northrepps Village Hall where doors open at 7pm with drinks for sale before the events begin at 7.30pm. For more details see www.northreppsfilmsociety.co.uk.

The injunction forbids Mr Beech from being drunk or in possession of any opened container of alcohol in any public place in a designated area of Cromer; it also forbids him from using abusive or threatening language in public anywhere in a designated area of the town.
Cllr Tom FitzPatrick Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “Mr Beech’s persistent drinking had been causing a number of issues for local businesses and the local community. This injunction shows the Council will not tolerate, or expect our communities to tolerate, persistent anti-social behaviour.” This is the second time North Norfolk District Council has used the injunction, part of the powers given to the Council under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act.
The injunction comes at the end of a long process of engagement with the individual and is not intended to punish but to prevent further anti-social behaviour.

We have a number of appointments available through the Norfolk Will Help scheme across our offices in Norwich, North Walsham, Sheringham and Brooke. Statistics collected in 2015 show only 47% of adults in the UK have written a Will. Out of those who have made a Will, 52% have not reviewed it in the last three years. If you have had a change in circumstances since creating your most recent Will such as, marriage, children or divorce it may mean that your Will is invalid or no longer reflects your wishes. Lin Whitehead, Partner and Head of Wills, Trusts and Probate Department said ‘‘We encourage clients of all ages to consider making arrangements for the future. Having a Will allows you to decide what happens to your property and possessions. It puts you in control. If you die without a Will, your estate will be distributed in accordance with the Intestacy Rules, which are old fashioned and can lead to disappointment and injustice. We are delighted to support Norfolk Will Help once again as it’s a great way to put your affairs in order while supporting 5 Norfolk charities.’’
Clapham & Collinge has always been a big supporter of charities and has previously taken Lesley Ward Jennefer Nash part in Will Aid, as well as the Marie Curie Having a Will allows you to decide what Will Scheme that took place 1st May – 31st happens to your assets on your death. On 12 November Age Concern North Norfolk are turning back the clock and getting into the ’60s mood as part of their ongoing fundraising efforts in conjunction with the team from G.I.F.T. (the Good Intentions Fundraising Team).
Their ’60s-themed evening stars Norfolk’s very own Pat James. Fancy dress is optional – as the best costume wins a prize – but either way we hope to see everyone getting in the swing of the party and come and enjoy an evening of live
music and dance. Tickets cost just £7.50 and that includes a buffet. The evening starts at 7.30pm and finishes around 11pm, and is being held at Aldborough Community Centre. For more information, or to reserve your ticket, please call GIFT organiser Yvonne Tiffany on 01263 768076 or by calling Age Concern North Norfolk on 01263 821188 or 01263 823126.
Our next fun quiz night is this coming month, also at Aldborough Community Centre, which is on Friday 28 October staring at 7pm. It costs £5 per person and everyone is welcome. A
raffle and light refreshments will be available on the night. It would be great to see you there for another fun filled evening, to challenge your little grey cells whilst helping to raise money for our much-needed local independent charity.
Age Concern North Norfolk provides care for the older person at our Day Services, which involves personal care, lunch, a bathing service as well as activities. We also have a Befriending scheme and three Keep-In-Touch Groups in Sheringham, Cromer and North Walsham respectively where an older person can meet new friends and get support. We organise regular events and intergenerational activities and are always on the lookout for new ways to expand and outreach to those who are most socially isolated.
Changes to State Pension Age 1950s Women I would like to draw your readers’ attention to the 2.6 million women born in the 1950s on or after 6 April 1951 who have had significant State Pension changes imposed on them by the Pensions Acts of 1995 and 2011. Changes which were made with little, or no, personal notification. Some women had only two years notice of a six-year increase to their State Pension age. In Norfolk it will affect thousands of women in this age group. Many will not be aware that their circumstances have changed.
The issue is that the rise in 1950s women's State Pension age has been too rapid and has happened without sufficient notice being given, leaving no time to make alternative arrangements. Women born in this decade feel they have been seen as a soft target, financially. They have worked hard, raised families, paid their tax and national insurance with the expectation that they would be financially secure when reaching 60. Historically these women had no state funded child-care so leaving work and often taking on part-time, low-paid employment (and unequal pay) as their children grew.
Many of these women are living in hardship. Retirement plans have been
shattered with devastating consequences. Many are already out of the labour market, caring for sick husbands or elderly relatives, providing childcare for grandchildren. Many others suffer age-related illness and discrimination in the workplace, and are struggling to find employment. The inevitable consequences are less money circulating in the local economy a greater strain on local health services, and an underclass of ageing women. Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) is a national campaign asking for fair transitional arrangements for women affected by these changes. We are not against women’s pension age being equalised with that of men.
If any of your readers would like further information they can find it on the group website at waspi.co.uk. We have a Norfolk Waspi Group Facebook Page - Pension Action In Norfolk- PAIN/Waspi in Norfolk. This is a closed group, please send a request to join. The Cromer Mile raises £1890.52 for Sport Relief 2015
Earlier this year, the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile in Cromer saw local people running one, three or six miles in aid of Sport Relief. The money has been counted up and The Cromer Mile raised a total of £1890.52
This year’s Sport Relief was a record breaking year with the campaign raising a total of £72.5 million. The money raised will help disadvantaged people living incredibly tough lives, across the UK and the world’s poorest communities. Phil Harris, Mile Organiser said “We are delighted with the total amount of money we have raised this year. It’s brilliant to have been part of such a successful Sport Relief year and know that we are helping to make a difference to people’s lives. I would like to thank everyone who helped and also the many of local residents who took part”
Jess Kirke, Events Manager at Comic Relief said “We want to say a huge thank you to all of our local mile organisers. They work tirelessly to organise successful events up and down the country and we are truly grateful for all their efforts and hard work - Sport Relief wouldn’t be the event it is without them.”

STREET LIGHTInG - All of the street lights within the responsibility of Cromer Town Council are to be replace with LED lanterns. Some columns have been found to be cracked underground and thus new columns will also be installed where necessary. The Town Council have consulted with local heritage/conservation groups and identified areas where it is more appropriate to install heritage style columns. The LED lighting will be fitted with automatic dimmers which will dim the lights by 50% after midnight. Works have commenced and will continue over the coming months.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club
of the game Graham moved the jack to give his team 4 shots and an overall win 26 – 24. Do you know bowls CAN be exciting! The triples final did not manage to live up to that tension. Graham Hall was once again involved skipping a triple with Steve Bobbin and Russell Webdale. They were up against Chrissy Laskey skipping with Peter Bird and Jackie Purvis. The game started well for Graham leading 5 – 1 after 4 ends. Chrissy responded to lead 10-5 after 7 ends. Her triple then took control to lead 19 – 7 after 11 of the 18 ends to play. Although Graham did score on 3 of the remaining ends Chrissy kept in control to win 25 – 12 after the 18 allotted ends. The AGM of the club has been held and officers appointed to take the club into 2017 are: President Philip Edmonds; Club Secretary Edna Bunkle; Club Treasurer Jackie Purvis; Club Captain Keith Pantling; Vice Captain Steve Bobbin; Ladies Captain Bernice Billington; NBA League Captain Neil Patrickson; Federation Captain Neil Carswell; Competition Secretary Bob Allard; Bowls Secretary Brenda Scott; Fixture Secretary Peter Bird. We wish them all success in their various roles. The club now moves on to its winter social program. We have three club members who will prepare quizzes for Friday evenings, each of a different style and

... where all the prizes/trophies have now been presented at what became known as “Bobs Presentation Evening”! There was a buffet prepared by many of the ladies at the club and the evening was well supported. As it was going to be a further 2 weeks before winter work commenced on the green it was also announced that evening that as the weather forecast was good the green would be open for an extra week. The last two finals had been played in the previous week. The Fours final saw David Mocock, Phil Toner, Bernice Billington and Les Kiss play Frances Day, Steve Bobbin, Neil Patrickson and Graham Hall. Graham got off to a flyer scoring 5 on the first end. Not to be outdone Les collected 4 on the next end. It then proved to be a close encounter with Graham leading 8 – 7 after 7 ends. Les then scored 4 to lead 11 – 8 before Graham surged past to score on the next 4 ends to lead 18 – 11. Shots were exchanged equally on the next few ends until at the 17th end, out of the 21 to be played, Graham still led 22 – 16. Now Les and his rink raised the pressure to score 4, 2, and 2 to lead 24 – 22 on the penultimate end. Playing that last end the pressure was on all players. First Graham held the shot, then Les and finally with the last bowl
A LAST FOND KISS
Autumn. The end of the lawn bowls season, A pastime which, for many, has no reason. With its competitions, friendlies, and a roll-up. Not a ciggie. But an opportunity to tune up, Greens upon which friends, each try to outplay By releasing a wood on its curving way.
Sometimes sun baked, occasionally soaked, Other times romantically, mistily, cloaked, Cromer Marrams elevated above the sea Members wanting good weather that’s their plea But, whatever the weather joy does abound Especially for a toucher, when a chalk must be found. Remember last Spring, with its early promise All leagues, challenges sorted, definitely no bias, A look to the season soon forthcoming Notices pinned, for names to be adding Smiles all around, with just the occasional scowl, A hope that there’ll be no need to call foul. The clubhouse buzzes with earnest intent Then out to the tourney, a splendid event
quality to keep the interest. That means each will test club members once each month. On evenings when we do not have a quiz the club will be open for other social activities, if only a drink at the bar and friendly chat. Also on Wednesday afternoons the club runs its own version of short mat bowls, and it is a very short mat! Coffee/tea and biscuits form part of that occasion.
And there the season comes to an end. Thank you for reading and as those of you who can remember Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig or any other Looney Tunes character, “That’s all Folks!”

Sadly, time moves on, to the final day The verve that filled each step, no longer gay Shoulder to shoulder members stand, only one game to finish Please let it end with a wonderful flourish Rink number one, road to sea for the tourney Soon, a final drink, leaving only, the homeward journey. The evening draws on, a slight chill in the air The last wood to be bowled, Oh! let it be fair, That sensuous curve, it’s on the right track, Closer, yet closer, nearing the jack, This one final effort please don’t let it miss Then slowly, slowly, they touch.
