Issue 505 5th November 2016
Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent
SOCIETY SAYS THANKS A MILLION TO CROMER Norwich & Peterborough Building Society has said thanks a million to the community in Cromer for helping reach its fundraising target of £1million for its Hour of Need campaign in aid of Marie Curie. The Society’s branch, on Church Street, has raised an impressive £1,521 towards the target since the start of the campaign in 2014.
Hour of Need is the most successful fundraising drive in the Yorkshire Building Society Group’s history - of which N&P is part - with every £20 raised funding one hour of Marie Curie nursing care and the money raised in Cromer has funded 76 hours of care alone.
Colleagues from the Society have taken part in a variety of fundraising activities including riding 190km in branch on exercise bikes, stepper machine challenges and even set a new world record for largest cream tea party in multiple locations.

two hours of care by a Marie Curie Nurse for every hour of the campaign.”
Dr Jane Collins, Chief Executive of Marie Curie, said “Thank you to all Society staff and members for their fantastic support of the Hour of Need campaign. The £1 million raised is enough to fund around 50,000 hours of vital care and support for people living with a terminal illness, and their families. The Society has gone above and beyond to raise funds for us, and we are truly grateful for everything staff and members have done.”
The Society’s Hour of Need campaign was launched in 2014 with the original aim of raising £500,000 by December 2016. Thanks to the strength of support this was reached a year early, the Society has now more than doubled this figure with the current total standing at more than £1,021,030. Deer’s Glade Fireworks Spectacular This year’s charity fireworks display at Deers Glade Caravan and Camping Park in Hanworth will take place on Saturday 5 November and is set to be the biggest event yet, falling as it does on Bonfire Night. Once again the Attew family who own the caravan and camping site will be working with local Cromer charity About with Friends to put on a memorable evening.
The event takes place at the Deer’s Glade campsite in White Post Road, Hanworth. Gates open 6pm and the candlelit procession leaves the main campsite at 6.30pm. The bonfire will be lit at 7pm with the fireworks starting at 7.30 and lasting for about 30 minutes. Although the fireworks are the pinnacle of the evening, the unique candlelit walk through the
woods between the main campsite and Deer’s Glade is much loved by children and adults alike.
About With Friends, who support adults with learning disabilities, believe in integrating their members at the heart of the community and are not just silent partners at the event. They run the food and drink marquee and provide a quality menu of hot food, snacks and drinks. Cooked and sold by members, staff, volunteers and supporters the group will serve some 2000 people in the space of two hours making it an extremely busy evening. This year they will be offering Hog Roast rolls, superior hot dogs, vegetarian options, beer and soft drinks, mulled wine and cider and much more. There will also be glow sticks on sale. A family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) is a bargain £14 or a single ticket is £4.
The Attew family who run the campsite and organise the display have close connections with the group and have run this event in partnership with them since 2011. Insurance cover for the event is being sponsored by NFU Mutual Insurance once again.
About With Friends is a fun, active and energetic charity based in Cromer. We offer children, young
people and adults with learning disabilities the chance to lead the lives they choose. When they become part of our family they have opportunities to develop lasting friendships; engage in fun and active social activities; get involved in the community; have the chance to try new experiences; learn new skills both for life and work; but above all feel a valued part of society while enjoying life to the full.

Body Wise comes to Cromer
Chantal Groom, who was born and raised in Norfolk and now lives in Melton Constable, is opening a second practice on Central Road in Cromer, called Body Wise. Mother of two Chantal, has been helping to alleviate pain by various non surgical methods for many years and until this month in just one venue - Fakenham Family Chiropractic. "I qualified as a massage therapist in 1998, and after gaining a distinction in my Masters Degree in Chiropractic in 2013," says Chantal. " I have helped hundreds of people with diverse problems which either do not respond to drugs or which people prefer to be treated without drugs." Chiropractic is a therapy concerned with your NeuroMusculoSkeletal system, basically everything to do with your nerves, muscles and bones. "I will now be dividing my time between Fakenham and Cromer, commented Chantal. "This will allow me to help more people over a wider area, and I can be flexible with the days I spend at the two locations." "My extensive training in both disciplines llows me to see you as a whole person. I believe in treating the whole body and to this end can offer deep tissue massage alone or Chiropractic manipulation in combination with deep tissue massage, rehabilitation exercises and lifestyle advice and support.” Chantal can, and does treat people of all ages,
Cromer Times 505 November 5th 2016
from tiny babies, the young and the not so young. "I am very committed to finding the causes of pain, which can be as simple as correcting poor posture, to more complex issues. I have also completed additional training for pregnant ladies and paediatrics and is particularly successful with mums to be, young babies and children." “I also love working out at the gym and am particularly interested in helping runners, sportsmen and sportswomen to keep fit.”
How do I do it? Many different techniques are used, from the manipulation Chiropractors are known for, to the very gentle techniques for the very young and elderly. Most patients will be given tailored exercises to help them along with their recovery. Treatment plans are personal - there are no generic treatments. "If you have any problems with back, neck or leg pain, difficulty walking, aching joints (such as elbows, knees, hips, wrists and ankles), headaches, muscle aches, injuries, pre or post operative problems or worries, then I would be happy to try to help you overcome these problems. Chantal is offering a free 30 minute consultation at her new premises. "Come and have an informal chat and see if Chiropractic can help you."

In Every Corner Sing
Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society return to St Peter’s Sheringham on Saturday 26 November at 7.30 pm for a delightful programme of quintessential English choral and orchestral music.
Under the direction of their new Musical Director, David Ballard, and accompanied by a string orchestra they will perform works by Vaughan Williams, Stanford, Parry, Finzi and Holst. The choir will be joined by acclaimed Baritone soloist Dhilan Gnanadurai and accompanied by pianist Anthony Gowing.
Choral items include Ralph Vaughan William’s sublime Five Mystical Songs, Charles Villiers Stanford’s stirring Songs of the Fleet and Charles Hubert Parry’s much loved Blest Pair of Sirens. Alongside these the specially invited string orchestra (leader Keith Hobday) will perform Gustav Holst’s delightful St Paul’s Suite and Gerald Finzi’s beautiful but rarely performed Eclogue.
The title of this concert is taken from a line in the well-known poem by George Herbert “Let all the world in Every Corner Sing” which feature in the closing Antiphon in Vaughan Williams’s Five Mystical Songs.
This promises to be a most enchanting concert – not to be missed – tickets are available now priced £12 (£15 on the door, under 18s FREE) from the Box Office Sheringham Little Theatre 01263 822347 or online at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com For further information please visit www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk
WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?
“It’s a common misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor, qualified Family Mediator and Collaborative solicitor.
As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. The common misconception is that a larger local firm or city firm is better but this is incorrect. A client just pays more.
When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I am one of the few solicitors that offffers a free first appointment so that clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision.
I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

New 2016 Sir William Paston Scholars receive their awards
In 2006 the Trustees of the Paston Foundation created a scholarship scheme to mark Paston’s 400th birthday, bearing the name of our founder, Sir William Paston. Ten years on, the awards are still an important part of the Sixth Form College.
This year, 25 scholarships worth £500 were awarded to new gifted and talented students. The Paston Sixth Form College students study A levels and BTEC courses as a preliminary to going to a top university. This year, 25% of students at Paston went on to top Universities, including three going on to Oxbridge. In the current year, 18 students have sent applications into Oxbridge.
The scholars had a special lunch to receive their scholarships. At the lunch, Richard Dennison, Corporation and Paston College Foundation member, presented the awards.
Cromer Times 505 November 5th 2016
The students use the awards in a range of different ways to support their learning at Paston.
Kevin Grieve, Principal, said “It is good to remind students of the legacy left by Sir William Paston. Again, this year, we have a large number of students gaining the awards”. The Scholars this year are :

New Build Project at Roughton Playgroup
We are a small playgroup based in the village of Roughton, Norfolk. At present we are in a very old port-a-cabin, in the grounds of St Mary’s Primary school. This once served as a classroom to the school. The families that access our provision come from the village and the surrounding towns and villages of North Walsham, Southrepps, Cromer, Mundesley, Edingthorpe and Thorpe Market.
The mobile classroom is very cold in the winter and boiling hot in the summer. We do have storage heaters but these take up a lot of room and need a fire guard around them to protect the children.
We are a committee run playgroup and we have regular committee meetings and arrange fundraising activities to keep the playgroup going.
Over the past 3 ½ years the playgroup has increased numbers tremendously, due to a very good Ofsted report and the staff working on promoting the playgroup and developing their skills. We are currently filling our days from September 2017 and we only have limited space available for the school year 2016/2017.
We are currently experiencing a high demand for spaces for 2 year olds, due to the introduction of the 2-year-old funding. This has had an impact on our numbers and due to the
size of our building we only take 4 x 2 year olds per session. This of course limits the amount of 2 year olds we can take and so we have a waiting list.
Also in September 2017, there is a possibility of the increase of funded hours for 3 and 4 year olds to 30 hours per week.
However, to fulfil this project we need to find in the region of £150,000, and this is hopefully where you might come in. We are looking for anyone who would like to make a donation to the project however small or have ideas of where we may be able to obtain grants and funding.
Therefore, you feel you can help or advise us It has become apparent that our building is no in any way please feel free to contact us either longer suitable for the number of children that by phone to Chloe Bennett (Committee we have attending the playgroup. Therefore, Chairperson) 01263 516892 or via e-mail at we have now been given planning permission enquiries@roughtonunder5s.co.uk. to demolish our existing building and to build a Finally, if you wish to see what we already nice new modern Eco Friendly one in its place do and to view the plans of our new building which will last for at least the next 15 years. you can visit our website at The new building will also have 2 rooms for our children up from our current one room. www.roughtonunder5s.co.uk One of the new rooms will be for our 2-3 year olds and the other room will be for our 3-4 year olds. As the new building will be PLEASE PUT ME UP IN YOUR CAR, AT WORK OR AT HOME! larger we will be able to take more children. Hopefully an increase from our current max of 20 per session up to a new max of 30 per session. This in turn will increase our staff numbers by at least one from our current six members of staff.

New East of England Co-op Funeral Service for Cromer The East of England Co-op Funeral Services have extended their care and support for communities in Norfolk with the opening of a brand new funeral branch in Cromer. Funeral Arranger Mary Wilson, who manages the new branch in Garden Street, has lived in Norfolk for over 22 years and has many fond memories of visiting Cromer for regular holidays as a child. As well as expert advice on funeral arrangements, Mary can provide guidance on monumental masonry, bereavement support and pre-paid funeral plans, for those looking to plan ahead for peace of mind.
Because they are the local Co-op, they work hard to support the community by helping local groups and initiatives as well as partnering with good causes and charities such as local hospices.
It’s the little things that count
Mary and her colleagues at the East of England Funeral Services believe everyone should be remembered in a way that is as individual as they were, and they know it’s the little things that make a funeral special. They focus on their clients’ needs and wishes; discreetly and sensitively.
Local residents and neighbours are invited to drop in and meet Mary in person and to see the calm and welcoming premises, which feature a spacious reception, private arrangement room and Chapel of Rest.
Mary says she feels honoured to manage a funeral branch in the heart of the community; “Cromer is such a wonderful town and I feel privileged to be supporting the local community here. I want people to know that our door is always open for a chat or a cup of tea.”
About the East of England Co-op Funeral Services
The very first East of England Co-op funeral branch opened back in 1925 and there are now around 50 branches across the region. As a local, independent business they only operate in the Eastern region and are owned directly by their members.
Funeral Arranger Mary Wilson
Every client is treated as an individual by professional, kind people, all of whom live and have mostly grow up in the East of England. They are proud to be part of the East of England Co-op and offer a local service to local families. When a loved one passes away, all arrangements are taken care of so families can concentrate on saying goodbye. From the way the flowers are arranged to the route taken to the service and the dress code of the guests, colleagues pay attention to personal touches.
A celebration of life
Traditionally, a funeral is a solemn ceremony, where friends and family arrive in formal dress to pay their respects and say their final farewells to a loved one. More recently the East of England Co-op Funeral Services has seen an increase in ‘celebrations of life’ that are as unique and individual as the person they are dedicated to.
Working closely with families, the service can be arranged to reflect people’s passions, interests and hobbies in a more personalised ceremony. For those who feel planning ahead for their own funeral would give peace of mind, colleagues are with them every step of the way, taking care of the important decisions and helping with every detail so the day can be just how they pictured it.
The community has been putting its trust in the East of England Co-op Funeral Services for over 90 years, providing quality, personal and flexible funeral care for families. The new Cromer branch on Garden Street is open from 9:30am to 4.30pm, from Monday to Friday. Mary is available to answer any questions or talk about funeral services at the branch or over the phone on 01263 422130. Cromer Times 505 November 5th 2016

Delighted director Debbie Thompson collected the accolade at a ceremony in Norwich Cathedral’s Hostry last month. She said: “We are absolutely delighted. This is amazing for us. Because it was a public vote is means a lot.”
The theatre’s work staging a professional panto, one of the few remaining summer repertory drama seasons, films, live arts events screenings, a range of community, amateur and youth productions and its busy Hub coffee bar were highlighted during the awards evening. The seaside venue was up against fellow finalists Norwich Arts Centre and the city’s Maddermarket Theatre. Mrs Thompson said the award was a reward for the hard work of the tireless army of 86 volunteers at the theatre. It is hard work, but we are almost self-sustaining, as we are only 10% funded now.”

Norfolk Coast Partnership Ponds Project - volunteers required
We are looking for volunteers to take part in pond survey work in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In the first instance, we are looking for 2-3 people this year into next to work on a pilot to test a recording methodology. This will be followed next year in the spring by a survey of the coast's ponds for which we seek assistance from several volunteers. Ponds are such an important habitat, serving as stepping stones in the wider landscape linking areas and providing refuges for wildlife. We need to know more about them, where they are, what condition they are in and what wildlife they are supporting.
If you would like to find out more or be involved in this work - either the 2016 pilot, the 2017 survey, or both - contact Gemma Clark gemma.clark@norfolk.gov.uk You do not need to have an ecological background as the survey isn't long and is very straightforward, a briefing session can be provided beforehand.

Punk Rock comes back to Cromer in 2016
Back in 1975, Punk Rock started a revolution in music. A change from the pop of the late 60s and early 70s, it brought new antiestablishment bands to the fore.
Most famous of these were The Sex Pistols, managed by Malcolm Maclaren, bringing their own unique brand of anarchy to the UK music scene.
1976 saw the punk music scene explode onto the streets across Britain. With its fashion and music message, it soon became the choice for the youth of the day.
Forty years ago in late 1976, The Sex Pistols made their name and for the next year or so, they were hitting the headlines with their own version of anarchy touring the country.
On Christmas Eve 1977, they played at

There are eight ferries left on the Broads and these are cared for and maintained by different Trusts. Peter has five of these wherries at the bottom of his garden and he explained how he would like our support and help.
If anyone would like to volunteer they could contact the Norfolk Wherry Trust.
The meeting continued after a break for tea and members were asked if they would like to come on to the new committee next month. Arrangements were made for our visit to Castle Museum, Norwich and a trip to Briston WI for a tea and fashion show. Three members were congratulated for winning the Brass Tray Quiz, which is a yearly quiz between neighbouring WIs.
Next month is our Annual meeting and there will not be a speaker. A new President and Committee will be elected. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

Peter has been interested in wherries since he left school and is very much involved with their preservation and upkeep. Wherries derived from Viking ships and were first used on the Broads in the 1860/70s and were used as either working or pleasure wherries and all pleasure vessels actually had pianos on board.

One of the biggest and best known tribute acts to The Pistols, it will be another night to remember for the town, a chance for those who were at The Links Pavilion that night to relive their own piece of history and punk followers to enjoy a little piece of ‘anarchy’ for an evening.
Still talked about today by many locals, The Links Pavilion was a haven for many of the youth of the day, seeing many big names of the era, who went on to be some of the biggest stars of the time, and some for decades to follow - the Sex Pistols being one of the most remembered. REDWINGS PAYS TRIBUTE TO ‘HERO’ HORSE OLIVER Redwings Horse Sanctuary has said a sad goodbye to a very special horse who was a beloved companion to his blind best friend for seven years
Bay cob Oliver had lived with blind Clydesdale cross Boo near the charity’s horse hospital in Norfolk. Oliver, who was 28 and had lived at Redwings since 1992, formed an immediate bond with sweet-natured Boo when he arrived in 2009 having survived a shocking attack. Boo, 19, who has previously lost one eye to cancer, was shot at point blank range, which resulted in the loss of his remaining eye. Sadly, no-one was ever prosecuted for this despicable act of cruelty but Boo was welcomed in to the Sanctuary where he could receive the specialist care he would need for the rest of his life.
Loyal Oliver became Boo’s most trusted friend, guiding him around their field and accompanying him for every veterinary check-up, helping him rebuild his confidence and giving him the new lease of life he so desperately deserved. The pair remained inseparable until the morning
of 6 October when, tragically, it was discovered Oliver was suffering from a severe impaction colic and was in a lot of pain. Due to his age, surgery was not an option and the heart-breaking decision was taken to put Oliver to sleep to save him from further suffering. Boo stayed by his side. Since Oliver’s passing, the Redwings veterinary team has been closely monitoring Boo and he has been introduced to a new companion, a piebald cob called Flynn, also 19, who is helping him come to terms with his loss. The pair are currently getting to know each other in the stables at the Redwings horse hospital and initial signs suggest that the two are striking-up a new, close friendship. Lynn Cutress, Redwings’ Chief Executive, said “Oliver was not just a beloved member of the Redwings family for almost 25 years, but he was also a hero. When poor Boo’s world was turned upside down, Oliver gave him a reason to trust again and a chance to enjoy a new life at the Sanctuary. We’re very happy and relieved to see
The gift that keeps giving all year round! This Christmas, sponsor a rescued horse or donkey from Redwings Horse Sanctuary! Not only will your loved one receive a year of friendship from their new four-legged friend, but your sponsorship will help care for them all year round – it really is the gift that keeps giving.
Redwings’ popular Adoption Scheme has been running for over 30 years and gives you the opportunity to sponsor a special ‘Adoption Star’ horse or donkey for yourself or as a gift. A whole year’s sponsorship costs just £12.50, with every penny going towards the daily care of your chosen Adoption Star and their friends.

Redwings’ 24 Adoption Stars live at the charity’s five visitor centres in Norfolk, Essex, Warwickshire and Angus in Scotland, and include real-life Black Beauty Maya, handsome Shire Cross Major, tiny Shetland Sampson and super-cute donkey Minnie. And with free entry to each centre – open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday all year round – you or your loved one can also meet and cuddle their new friend in person! While these adorable characters may not actually fit around the Christmas tree, sponsoring a Redwings rescued resident allows you to bring these gorgeous creatures into your home – and your heart – as you will receive a certificate of adoption as well as letters and photos from your furry friend. Adopters also receive a special invite to their sponsored horse or donkey’s birthday party, making an adoption the perfect gift for any animal lover or for those who have always wanted to own a horse or donkey.
ALDIS MOTORS LTD
Redwings’ Chief Executive Lynn Cutress said “Christmas is a time of happiness and love but sadly many of our Adoption Stars are rescue cases who were deprived of these simple things in their early lives. Sponsoring a Redwings resident makes a beautiful and unique gift because you will not only be giving your loved one the chance to begin a wonderful friendship with a very special horse or donkey, but you’ll also ensure we can continue to provide the safe and happy home they and their friends truly deserve.”

Cantamus Choir: Christmas in a Small Country Church
Cantamus was the inspiration of Margaret Hunter, a member of the congregation at St Margaret's church in Thorpe Market. Founded in 1998 by Ro Curtis, the choir fast established its reputation by successive music directors, as a choir with a wide repertoire who performed great choral works. Their annual event came to be loved by all, the 'Christmas Concert’ - its setting quite iconic in the picturesque church at Thorpe Market, lit only by candlelight, holly-entwined wooden staves at the end of each pew, beautifully chosen carols and mulled wine to lend further warmth.
For the last five years, the choir had been based in a number of other venues. In September 2016 the choir returned to its roots and was welcomed once more at Thorpe Market church, a venue well known for its support of the arts and with vastly improved facilities to stage performances and exhibitions. Cantamus is now led by a new Director of Music, Philip Adams. An experienced former chorister and organist who held a number of significant directorships across the country. Whilst in Brighton he organised concerts for the Brighton Festival, and sang with the Brighton Chamber Choir. He also taught music for 25 years at Cumnor House School, in |Sussex.
Philip will be presenting a Christmas Concert this year with an innovative programme, quite different from the usual year-in, year-out repertoire of concerts prior to Christmas. Cantamus will sing carols from early plainsong through the English and European mediaeval period, to the early carols of 18th century America. All these carols being interspersed around a Pastoral, Christmas Mass setting based on ancient elements of Slovak folk music, and European baroque music, by the Moravian composer and monk Edmund Pascha. There will also be Christmas readings and congregational carols.
The Christmas Concert is on Friday 9th December at 7pm. £8 Fee on entry of which 50% of all income raised will be donated to the ‘new organ’ fund at Thorpe Market church. Address: St. Margaret of Antioch, Poppyland Group of Churches, Diocese of Norwich, Church Rd, Thorpe Market, Norwich NR11 8UA

Entry is £3 per person.
The Strand Club
On 12 October the Strand Club met to enjoy a jewellery party held by Jo and John Austin.
Jo began by giving a brief talk explaining how she and John first began. After early retirement for them both, they lived a year getting more and more bored. Jo then decided to do something with her collection of Murano beads, gathered when she was living in Italy. John soon came on board too, fixing the catches and making the earrings. Now they have a good business with friends supplying beads, mostly handmade. They can use different catches, for example magnetic, should a customer require it. Their trademark is a silver dragonfly fixed to every necklace and bracelet, echoing their trade name of Dragonfly Beads.
We all enjoyed browsing the goods on display and several purchases were made.
Members are reminded to bring extra money to our November meeting as the menus for our January lunch will be available and choices and payments should be made then.
Visitors are always welcome at our meetings and will be charged just £2 at the door to cover refreshments. Raffle tickets are available for purchase separately. Further information may be obtained from Glo Begley, Programme Co-ordinator, on 01263 576539, or Chris Wood, Secretary, on 01263 579433. The utterances of Donald J. Trump have once again brought the question of whether paying tax is optional/stupid/moral into the arena. Or, put the other way, whether not paying tax is optional/clever/immoral.
The distinction between the terms ‘tax avoidance’ and ‘tax evasion’ is becoming ever more distorted. The terms are now often used interchangeably, altering what has historically been a clear distinction. In the past, tax avoidance has been viewed as a lawful means of reducing a person’s tax liability. It has been a long-established principle since the 1936 case of IRC -v- Duke of Westminster. This has been the subject of much public criticism in recent times, as well-known entertainers and large multinational corporations seek to mitigate their tax liabilities, acting entirely within the law. The use by politicians of the word ‘morality’ has crept into the tax arena.
If you require advice on this matter please contact Miranda on 01328 710210. If you
require advice on any other legal matter please telephone our North Walsham office on 01692 503081 or email law@hayes-storr.com.

A hard-working tradesman who under-declares his income might been found guilty of tax evasion, whereas the wily business-man who set up a ‘genius’ scheme (with the help of his professional advisers) would argue (Trump-like) that he is cleverly arranging his affairs ‘tax-efficiently’.
Offences of fraudulently evading various taxes are not limited to prescribed law, but are retained within the common law offence of cheating the public revenue. The courts have prison-sentencing powers up to life imprisonment in England and Wales (but not in Scotland!). This broad offence dates back to medieval times. Most ‘cheating’ offences now fall under the Theft Act 1968 which created the offence of obtaining property by deception. This offence has been retained for cases where there may not be a specific statutory tax-evasion offence, and most likely will be reserved for high-profile cases involving scams or well-known personalities.
The international objective is floridly described as eliminating tax avoidance and ‘aggressive’ tax

The new bases were laid and tiled and the new pens have arrived and, at the time of writing, electricity has been reconnected at one site, and the cats should be back inside by the time you read this. I have been to see these pens today and the photo which accompanies this article does not do them justice. The pens are much bigger than our original ones, have non slip tiles on the floors and will be very easy to clean. There have been a few challenges at the other site but hopefully the electrical work will be completed soon and these pens too will be back in operation.
Although we still have several cats to catch at the feral colony mentioned last time, we are getting close to catching all the cats at another colony, with only one, or possibly two, more cats to catch. However, the last ones are always the hardest as they will be wary of going into one of the traps, having seen several companions caught in this way. Results are often achieved in these circumstances if the trap is taken away for a few days, but there are no guarantees. Two of our fosterers have been actively involved in catching the cats in this colony as they live close by.
Unfortunately we, ourselves, are not always able to help in this way due to distances involved and rely on cat caring people to help. We have now been advised of another colony which needs our help and are investigating the possibility of helping cats in yet another area. It takes

Overstrand Evening WI
Members sat enthralled as Mr Patrick Peal, Chief Executive of East Anglia Air Ambulance (EAAA) related the story of the EAAA from its beginnings to present day.
Its beginnings in 1996 were with a small helicopter which was just an airborne version of the road ambulance, carrying just the pilot, paramedic and the patient.
By 2000, a larger helicopter was by now equipped to bring the emergency department to the patient, and by 2010, it was crewed by two pilots, a Critical Care Paramedic and a Doctor.
Their two bases are in Norwich and Cambridge, which cover the four counties of Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. They are on call 7 days a week, 365 days a year and in Norwich from 7.00am to 7.00pm and in Cambridge over the whole 24 hours. They have an impressive expected arrival time of within 25 minutes.
Nowadays, the medics on board treat the patient with state of the art equipment that enables them to stabilise the patient, about 30% of whom are usually then able to be taken onwards to hospital by road. Never knowing exactly what they will find, the crews are equipped and ready to deal with life threatening and or life changing incidents.
Of the 3000 calls per day to the Ambulance HQ, 300 are for EAAA. For this service, no Government money is used so we are not paying for it through our taxes, hence the need for constant fund raising. Any money we donate makes us a small part of this team that saves lives.
The November meeting is our AGM and will start at 7pm. The committee are providing a Cheese and Wine supper, New members and visitors are always welcome. The next walk is planned for Friday 25 November and will be in the grounds of Felbrigg Hall.
You do not have to be an Overstrand resident to join us at our meetings and walks. Meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm at the Parish Hall, Overstrand. We look forward to meeting you.
Enjoyed your summer? Now it is time to clear up sun-damaged skin
A nice tan can make your skin glow in the summer, but as the golden colour fades our skin is left a little more damaged and we enter autumn looking a little older than last year. As we age, these factors take an increasing toll on our skin, and the effects are especially noticeable on our faces, neck, hands and décolletage.
This is why autumn is a good time to assess your skin care regimen. As temperatures drop and the air becomes drier, your skin naturally loses more moisture, especially when the central heating kicks in.
We see patients present with dry, wrinkled, uneven and sun-damaged skin. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take and simple procedures are available that protect your skin, correct issues resulting from sun damage, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The following products and procedures will help boost your skin’s health and appearance and carry you with confidence into the winter months.
Use sun protection creams with good SPF. Perhaps the best anti-aging products available today are those that contain some kind of retinoid. This is a class of vitamin A derivatives that really do help to improve the appearance of your skin. You can also treat mild cases at home by using facial cleansers and creams containing miniscule “grains” to exfoliate and mimic the effects of microdermabrasion. Look for glycolic acid in cleansers and peels to help smooth out your complexion. For better results you can try these cost effective procedures of microdermabrasion, gycolic peels and LED light in the clinic also.
You might also consider IPL and laser photo rejuvenation and skin toning. This virtually painless, non-invasive treatment addresses a variety of skin issues from sun damage and uneven skin tone to hyperpigmentation. It is a very effective procedure for evening out skin tone and reducing signs of sun damage such as brown spots and freckles.
A combination of aging, sun exposure and lack of hydration can result in dry skin that makes fine lines, wrinkles and other imperfections more noticeable. Over time, the skin tends to visibly lack fullness and elasticity.
While over-the-counter products are great for maintenance and fine for minor issues, injectable dermal fillers and skin boosters offer a more intensive treatment. There are quite a few options available, some more effective than others and each offering a slightly different result.

Norfolk Jazz
Jazz at The Hub (the bar at Sheringham Little Theatre) continues on Sunday 20 November when Tony Parsons takes his quartet to the venue. The music starts at 7.30pm. Tony is a classically trained musician who also flourishes in the world of jazz. He started playing at the age of 13, studied at the Royal College of Music and served in the Regimental Band of the Coldstream Guards. He played with Sadlers Wells Opera Orchestra and the Halle Orchestra. He was co-principal trombone of the BBC Symphony orchestra and trombone professor at the London College of Music. An exciting, enjoyable and enviable career.
Tony still plays across the musical spectrum and collaborates with local and regional musicians on a regular basis. On 20 November he will be playing with Tim Densham (clarinet
and saxophones), Peter Gregory (guitar and banjo) and Tony Jullings (bass). Tim and Peter are known at the Hub through their appearances with the Norfolk Jazz Quartet. Tony Jullings is a highly regarded and popular contributor to the regional jazz scene and has been at the heart of the Sole Bay Jazz Band for many years. The programme will be popular jazz standards “with a bit of Dixie for salt and pepper”. Tickets are £9.50p from the box office Tel: 01263 822347 or on-line at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Priest’, along with performances of Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’ and Pergolesi’s ‘Stabat mater’. North Norfolk Chorale will be joined by soloists Elenor Bowers-Jolley (Soprano) and Esther Brazil (Mezzo Soprano).
Jonathan Dodd said “I am delighted to be able to lead North Norfolk Chorale in a programme of deservedly popular works and I am particularly pleased that we have been able to attract soloists of such high quality. I urge people to come along to Gresham’s Chapel on 19 November to hear the Chorale sing in this wonderful space”.

Lead has been ripped off Blickling Parish Church, next-door to The National Trust’s Blickling Hall. Sometime on Wednesday 19 October, thieves removed lead from the south aisle roof causing thousands of £s worth of damage to this architectural delight of a Church.
To add insult to injury, the damage allowed rainwater to flood in, damaging pews, the floor and other items, including the medieval brass of Sir Nicholas Dagworth, the founder of the original Blickling Hall.
Revd Canon Andrew Beane said “It’s a devastating blow, and the damage lead theft causes not only destroys the heritage of some of our counties most beautiful buildings and tourist assess, but more importantly also affects those who care, love and worship in our churches.

The damaged has exposed the inside of the church to the elements and even more damage could be caused until repairs can be made. It’s been made even more frustrating and demoralising, as the congregation have only just celebrated, at a special Harvest Service with the Bishop of Lynn, the repairs to the another part of the roof which cost over £100,000, raised by donations and grants.
We are extremely grateful to NF Coverdales local builders from Cawston, who have put a temporary roof cover in place.
PC Greig Shepherd is leading the investigation and if any saw anything suspicious please contact the Police on 101.
If you would like to help Blickling Church then donations towards the repairs can be made at http://tinyurl.com/BlicklingRoof

Consultation on the Draft Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report North Norfolk District Council is preparing a new Local Plan.
Date 05-Nov
The Plan will include new planning policies (used in the determination of planning applications) and will allocate areas of land to address the development needs of the District for the period 2016-2036.
06-Nov
As part of the preparation of the emerging Local Plan, an appraisal of the social, environmental and economic impact of the plan must be carried out. This appraisal is known as a Sustainability Appraisal (SA). The SA will also meet the requirements for Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of the Local Plan.
07-Nov
In order to identify the range and level of detail of the information to be included in the SA, a Scoping Report has been produced. For a period of six weeks between Monday 10 October 2016 and Monday 21 November 2016, the Council are consulting with Historic England, Natural England, the Environment Agency and other relevant bodies on the content of the Scoping Report. Whilst this is primarily a technical consultation with the statutory bodies listed above, other organisations and individuals may also submit representations.

Watts overpowers Baker in fast, furious, and fantastic final
Cromer Squash Club’s 2013 club champion, Stephen Watts, can once again lay claims to the prestigious title.
In the final on last month Watts became the tenth player to win the title more than once when he swept aside the brave challenge of the four times former champion, John Baker, who first won the title more than thirty years ago, coming out on top 9-7 9-2 9-0.
Although the scoreline might suggest the final was one sided nothing could be further than the truth and the match was full of tremendous squash and long demanding rallies with Watts having a seemingly inexhaustible supply of energy as he covered every inch of the court and returned everything that Baker threw at him. In fact the watching Technical Director, Barry Starling, who was beaten by Baker at the quarter-final stage, described the match as ‘fast, furious and fantastic’.
pattern with Watts gradua lly opening up a 3-1 lead and then, after regaining the serve he won three successive points to lead 6-1, before eventually taking the game 8-2 to open up a commanding 2-0 lead.
In the third game Watts played a series of outrageous drop shots to open up a 4-0 lead and then after one brief change of serve won five successive rallies to win the game 9-0 and the match 3-0.
After the match, Baker was gracious in defeat saying “Stephen was absolutely brilliant and he This month attention switches to the Club’s thoroughly deserved his win.
