Cromer Chamber of Trade Christmas Social & Relaunch - You’re invited!
It's nearly 6 months since taking the chair of the chamber. During that time we, as a committee team, have taken stock of where the chamber was, is and needs to be. We've spent a lot of time reviewing what the chamber does and what its purpose is - why does it exist? On the 1st of December we're hosting a Christmas social open gathering and that will be our relaunch event too. We would love to see as many businesses that conduct business in and around Cromer to come along to enjoy a drink and a nibble and find out about our journey this year. You'll get to hear about the changes we've made so far, our new aims, see our new branding and what the chamber hopes to achieve next year. We want to hit the ground running as we move into 2017. After a small presentation there is an opportunity to network with other businesses. Whether your business is a shop, factory, office or like me work from home please do come along, meet the team, meet other businesses, enjoy the evening and be part of the event. The team and I look forward to welcoming you on the night. Gary Dickenson – Chamber President Details: December 1st 5.30pm in the function room at the Red Lion, Cromer. To help with numbers for catering please RSVP to gary@thisiscromer.co.uk or 01263 579422

Panto time for Tick and Tock the comedy crocs
A pair of specially-made crocodile puppets will spell double trouble for Captain Hook at a north Norfolk pantomime.
The pirate baddie from Peter Pan famously lives in fear of a croc that swallowed a crewman's alarm clock, and also snacked on his hand when it was cut off in a swordfight with the boy who never goes up.
But show director Nick Earnshaw has decided to have two of them to add a new dimension to the classic adventure tale.
Mr Leech designs characters for famous puppet makers Pelham, and said he enjoyed the challenge of being asked to make a croc for the first time.
"David was great. We had a meeting, and I described these two crocs, including their personalities and appearance. He immediate came back with lots of ideas and examples," said Mr Earnshaw, who has directed the Sheringham Panto twice before.
And the puppetry doesn't stop at the crocs, with Mr Earnshaw promising more marionette magic in the panto show.
He turned to top puppet maker David Leech, having worked with him on a student drama production of Sheringham panto creator and director Nick Theatre director Debbie The Lonely Goatherd Earnshaw with Tick and Tock the crocodile Thompson said “Peter song from the Sound Pan is already a magical puppets of Music at a festival story but the crocs, and in his home town of Stone in Staffordshire. other puppetry involved, really puts the icing on our annual Christmas cake.” "I had the idea of splitting the character in two and making it twin brother crocodiles. That The panto tells the timeless tale of Wendy way we could have sibling rivalry within the Darling and her younger brothers enjoying story to add a fresh twist. stories of Peter Pan’s adventures including battling with the evil Captain Hook, amid "They are a straight man and a fool. One is knockabout humour, swordfights, fairy posh with a monocle, the other crazy with red magic, song and dance. hair - partly based on my sons.”

Santa Sleigh Appeal
We d e l i v e r a l l o v e r N o r f o l k
We accept all major Credit and Debit cards
We at C.A.S. Travel, Sheringham are running for the 4th year our very successful Santa’s Sleigh Appeal. We will be having a Santa’s Sleigh in our branch between 12 November and 10 December and are hoping to fill the sleigh with lots of lovely toys and goodies which will then be presented to Break Charity on 13 December. Break Charity will then distribute the gifts to the vulnerable children, families and young people they work with.
We would be so grateful if you would be able to help us with this worthy cause and donate a small gift, child’s book or toy, unwrapped from a baby to a teenager. All we ask, is that you pop it into the branch unwrapped by 10 December.
We really hope this year’s appeal will be even more successful than last year and we can make this Christmas an extra special one and put a smile on the faces of local children and families supported by Break.
Thank you in advance for your support.
With kind regards, Nina and the team, C.A.S. Travel, Sheringham.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER DAISY, DAISY
daisies, which open white and then slowly fade to pink and finally turn red providing an ever changing display. The flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies.
Walking around the garden on a chilly and damp November morning, it is always cheering to see splashes of colour. The nerines are possibly the showiest flowers but the last of the dahlias and chrysanthemums and some of the perennials such as gaura and salvias are adding to the interest.
However, the most floriferous plant in my garden at the moment is, without doubt, the daisy, Erigeron karviniskianus ‘Profusion’. Coincedentally, this has just been featured as the plant of the week in the Daily Telegraph and it is easy to see why this plant is so popular and has earned the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit. It is commonly known as the Australian daisy or Mexican fleabane. I was told by a football fan that the plants colonised the concrete terraces of the stadium built in Mexico for the 1970 World Cup. This small, spreading plant flowers non-stop for most of the year and is covered in small dainty
I first saw this plant at Great Dixter in Sussex, the wonderful garden of the late Christopher Lloyd where it had seeded into cracks in walls, the paths and crevices of stonework. It has done exactly the same in my garden and also appears unexpectedly in the vegetable beds and pots on the terrace. It is so free seeding that it is considered a serious weed in New Zealand, where it is prohibited to sell the plant. Conversely, the Daily Telegraph is currently offering three plants for £11.99 plus P&P of £4.95! It is probably better and much cheaper to grow the plants from seed as they will flower within two or three months of sowing. In common with many rock-dwellers, Erigeron karvinskianus makes strong, wiry tap roots that drill into the spaces between rocks ensuring that the plant is firmly fixed and drawing on water and nutrients to help it to grow. It is thereby possible to make a
‘daisy wall’ by mixing a little seed with wellcrumbled, dampened soil and pressing it into the cracks between stones. With luck, they will germinate and the plants will root deep in the cracks and crevices. General cultivation is easy - they prefer full sun but will tolerate shade and are not fussy about soil. If the plant gets floppy, it can be cut back by a third in early summer. It associates well with Alchemellis mollis (lady’s mantle) which self seeds just as freely and provides lovely contrasting texture and form. One book I read recommends dead-heading the erigeron but this would be a never -ending task. If any admirer of your daisy wall asks for a bit of one of the plants it is possible to pull out a root and pot it up but this form of propagation is not easy – far better to hand over a few fluffy seed-heads.
Finally, a visit to Sheringham Park this month is well worthwhile as there are a number of rhododendron in flower to cheer up the dog walkers. They look quite incongruous against the autumn foliage but are still very welcome.

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY Norfolk is the home of a number of national collections of plants and flowers and we were fortunate enough to hear a talk by Tony Goode, the holder of a national collection of crocuses.
The crocus is a member of the iris family and there are 79 species available to growers in this country. In their native habitats, crocuses can be found in countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea and as far east as western China and although seen as a spring flower in the UK some varieties will flower well into the summer. Nerines, colchicums and cyclamens will extend the season for small bulbs well into the autumn and early winter so there is much to enjoy in this versatile group.
Next year’s programme includes talks on ‘Cinnamon and Coconut’, ‘Late Winter Colour’, ‘Grasses in the Garden’ and ‘A Buzz about Bees’. There is plenty and more for our members, old and new, so if gardening is your thing then why not join us. Membership is only £10 for the year and this includes free entry to the eleven meetings we have over the year on the second Wednesday of each month (except August) in the Community Hall in Cromer. Details are available from the Chairman on 01263 514399.

Cantamus Choir: Christmas in a Small Country Church
Cantamus was the inspiration of Margaret Hunter, a member of the congregation at St Margaret's church in Thorpe Market. Founded in 1998 by Ro Curtis, the choir fast established its reputation by successive music directors, as a choir with a wide repertoire who performed great choral works. Their annual event came to be loved by all, the 'Christmas Concert’ - its setting quite iconic in the picturesque church at Thorpe Market, lit only by candlelight, holly-entwined wooden staves at the end of each pew, beautifully chosen carols and mulled wine to lend further warmth.
years at Cumnor House School, in Sussex.
Cantamus is now led by a new Director of Music, Philip Adams. An experienced former chorister and organist who held a number of significant directorships across the country. Whilst in Brighton he organised concerts for the Brighton Festival, and sang with the Brighton Chamber Choir. He also taught music for 25

What you need to know about planning a Lasting Power of Attorney
By Lin Whitehead, Partner and Head of Wills, Trusts and Probate Department at Clapham & Collinge Solicitors On Wednesday 7th December, Clapham & Collinge Solicitors and AgeUK Norfolk will be delivering a training session for businesses and individuals to help understand Dementia and the legal consequences. Taking place from 1.00 – 2.30pm at Sheringham Golf Club, this session is designed to be of value and relevant to business owners, private individuals and professional advisers. This session is free to attend and refreshments are available on arrival. To book your place or for more information, contact Andrea Smith on 01603 693575 or email ASmith@clapham-collinge.co.uk
If you lose mental capacity because of dementia, you will need someone else to manage your legal, financial and health affairs. Having a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place can be just as important as having a Will. It gives you the reassurance of knowing your wishes will be respected if at any time in the future you become unable to make decisions for yourself. Before you have your LPA prepared there are some important factors for you to consider. Who should I choose to act as my Attorney/s? You should choose a person or people with whom you have a settled and easy relationship. The person or people chosen must be absolutely trustworthy and possess appropriate skills to make decisions on your behalf. They must be over 18 and not be an undischarged or interim bankrupt person, if you are making a Property and Affairs Power. How many Attorneys should I appoint? You can appoint one Attorney but it is advisable to appoint more than one or a replacement, to lessen the chance of abuse and ensure continuity in case your chosen Attorney cannot act. If you choose more than one, it is essential that those people get on with each other.
To find out more about Lasting Powers of Attorney or discuss your individual requirements in further detail, our dedicated Lasting Power of Attorney solicitors will be

How should my Attorneys act? If you have more than one Attorney, you will need to decide whether you want them to act: Jointly - always together - If they are appointed together, they must always sign together and agree which can be difficult in practice. Additionally if one dies, loses mental capacity or becomes bankrupt (if the Power is a Financial Power), the document can no longer be used. Together and independently – they can act either together or entirely independently of each other. This works well when the Attorneys do not live near to each other or, if one were to retire or die, then the other Attorney could still act. A combination - you decide which decisions they have to make together and which independently.
How do the Attorneys know what to do? They must always act in your best interests as set out in the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and follow the guidance contained in the Code of Practice to the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
What if my circumstances change? You should consider appointing a replacement Attorney to provide for a situation that your chosen Attorney is not able or is unwilling to act. If you appoint your spouse or civil partner, be aware that dissolution of the marriage or civil partnership terminates the appointment of your spouse/civil partner, unless you have indicated otherwise.

North Lodge Park Play Options Exhibition 2015
Over the weekend of 28 October, over 150 people visited the exhibition of options for a proposed play area in North Lodge Park, held in Sea-View Pre-school.
There was overwhelming support for the project, but no one option stood out – all the proposals gained support for certain aspects of their design. “We will be analysing the feedback and will discuss with the suppliers how they can develop their proposals to take into account the community feedback” said Barry Meadows.
It is planned to have a final design ready before the end of the year. Visitors to the exhibition came from across age ranges, children, parents and grandparents, and included both people and families from Cromer Cromer Times 506 November 19th 2016
and visitors to the area.
All the suppliers were given the same brief, to design an innovative inclusive play park, with a budget of £100,000, for the old bowling lawn next to North Lodge.
“The proposed location for the play park means that any solution needs to look right against the heritage of the area and surrounding buildings,” said Barry, “and we need to make sure that it is easily maintainable and will withstand the harsh environment that any cliff top location brings.” 21

North Norfolk Speakers Club
North Norfolk Speakers Club recently held their annual Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contests in North Walsham.
The winner of the Humorous Speech Contest was Club President Jennie Douse, who amused the audience with a speech entitled 'Mother and Mayhem'.
The Table Topics Contest was won by Julie Rubidge who imaginatively responded to 'You have found some money on the floor- how much is too much to keep for yourself'.
Both contests were smoothly organised by Clive Willet, who also chaired the Humorous Speech Contest, while David McNaughter chaired the Table Topics Contest.
North Norfolk Speakers Club Contest winners Jennie Douse, left, and Julie Rubidge
Members and guests enjoyed a very entertaining evening and Jennie later went on to gain a well-deserved third place in the Area Humorous Speech Contest in Dereham.
North Norfolk Speakers Club meets every other Wednesday at 6.45pm at North Walsham High School, Spenser Avenue, North Walsham. Guests and new members are always welcomed. For further information please visit www.nnsc.co.uk, email northnorfolkspeakersclub@gmail.com or telephone Jo on 01692 405946

Network & Natter – Aylsham Business & Enterprise Forum
Local businesses and voluntary organisations are being invited to a free ‘Network & Natter’ evening in Aylsham Town Hall on Monday 5 December, courtesy of the town’s Business and Enterprise Forum (ABEF). Starting at 6pm, the event is designed to offer ABEF members and non-members the opportunity to get together in an informal atmosphere, perhaps to share ideas and concerns.
ABEF Chair, Monica Harding, commented ‘ABEF now represents over 60 local businesses and voluntary organisations, providing a forum for discussion and helping our town to maintain its enviable reputation for strong community. One of our recent successes has been the launch of the Aylsham App for iphone and android which has proved very popular not only with the local community but with visitors as well’.
The ‘Network & Natter’ evening is an annual event which will allow ABEF to round off a successful year, during which membership has increased significantly and the success of the Aylsham App has launched a new era in the town’s engagement with the community.
The Aylsham App provides information on local businesses, attractions and events as well as suggestions for local walks and a calendar of events. It was developed for ABEF by Aylsham-based Norfolk Geeks who also ensure that it is kept up to date. The free App is complemented by the Discover Aylsham website, www.discoveraylsham.org where ABEF members can update their entries and the calendar.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We now have cats in all four of the new pens and both our fosterers are delighted to once again be helping needy cats. Although several cats and kittens have recently left for new homes, including Beth, one of our long term residents, their places have already been taken by cats from our waiting list. In a recent article I mentioned Cats Protection’s concern with regard to the problem of kittens being bred and sold in poor welfare conditions by individuals more motivated by money than their welfare. They are now asking for the help of like minded people to change the law to protect kittens sold that are underweight, under eight weeks old, in poor condition and flea and worm infested. The adverts are often misleading, some giving the impression that they are purchasing a pedigree cat, although there is no documentary evidence of this; some even claim the kitten is, for instance, a Ragdoll/ British Shorthair cross (or other combination of breeds), when it is

apparent from the photos that it is just an ordinary little moggy. Others will charge more for a certain colour, while the most important factor should be the kitten(s) temperament and sociability. It has also been noted that when a person is regularly advertising kittens on these websites, then it is not an instance where there was no intention for the cat to have kittens, but they are being deliberately bred to sell. Skye, lovely friendly Because Cats Protection sees so many abandoned and girl about 5 years old unwanted cats and kittens, we all believe it is important that legislation is in place to safeguard vulnerable animals. For cat lovers with computers you can read more about this at www.cats.org.uk/ truecostofkittens. Approaches will be made to the Minister responsible for animal welfare to (1) end sales of kittens under eight weeks old (2) regulate repeat breeding for sale from the family cat (3) define commercial pet sales to protect the welfare of kittens bred for sale. If you would like to support this action, please contact us via the Cats Protection website or at our Christmas Sale, where we will be able to go into more detail. We do feel strongly about this as there are so many cats and kittens out there needing homes, some of which have been abandoned because they are surplus to requirements, so deliberately breeding and selling kittens, just add to our workload. A recent instance of this was the little kitten, which had obviously originated from a home, which was found abandoned on the road. The person who found it initially thought it had been in an accident and was going to place it on the verge. When he discovered it was alive and not injured, he took it to one of the vets we use, where it was placed in intensive care. Thankfully, it has now recovered. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. You can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Calling all Norfolk Artists!
Be part of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2017
Applications are now open to take part in one of the most successful Open Studios schemes in the country.
Hundreds of artists across the region take part in Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios each year, inviting the public into their private studios to reveal where and how they work.
The event attracts thousands of visitors and this year an estimated 28,000 people visited studios across the county. Artists have the opportunity to promote their work and meet their audience, and visitors see artwork as it happens.
This year 455 artists participated in the scheme across 255 venues - along with 16 Norfolk schools and artists came together to create 19 Art Trails in various areas across Norfolk, allowing the visitor to enjoy a number of studios all in one day. Art demonstrations, private views, workshops and talks also make up this well-loved event.
Well established artists, as well as artists showing their work for the first time, take part and for many it is not just about making artwork sales. Artists comment that it helps them to feel part of their local artist community, they value visitor feedback and the scheme helps raise the profile of Norfolk artists.
“We are delighted to be sponsoring Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios once more this year, reflecting our long-term commitment to supporting local arts programmes.
“The ethos of Open Studios is very much in line with our own values as a photographic company and we look forward to helping celebrate and promote artistic talent in Norfolk.”
Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2017 will take place between 27 May and 11 June 2017. Artists wanting to take part can apply online at nnopenstudios.org.uk.
The cost for inclusion in the scheme is £100 for individual artists and £280 for groups of artists, and includes a listing in the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios brochure with a print run of Date GMT 35,000. 19-Nov 04:06 20-Nov
