Ice Rink Comes to Cromer Just in time for the half term break, Cromer saw the debut of a modest Ice Skating Rink at North Lodge Park, available for 5 days. On the first day alone, the synthetic ice rink sold over 1000 tickets to eager skaters.
Sessions were 45 minutes and saw a wide variety of visitors. Penguin stabilisers, or perhaps better named “Penguimmer frames”, were available for children. The weather was excellent for the majority of days and couldn’t have set a better tone for families out for some fun under the winter sun. Credit for the idea goes to Friends of North Lodge Park. They opposed plans for a car park at the site, and it’s great to see the space put to good public use. This new success bodes well for the Ice Rink’s possible return next year. I would like to thank the wonderfully appreciative audiences who came to the first play performed by Chalk Reef Amateur Productions in Cromer.
We played to packed houses on both nights, which was hugely gratifying and showed that there is an appetite for drama staged here in Cromer.
I would like to thank the following people for making the play such a tremendous success : our leading actor, John Church for his wonderful portrayal of Lady Bracknell, Phil Harris and Carol and the team at Cromer Community Centre - it really is a marvelous stage and deserves to be used for drama more often, Barry Meadows and all at Coastarts for their support in promoting the show and for online ticket sales, Jane Wissen and the team at Cromer Tourist Information Centre, Rachel Lamb for painting the set, to the people who helped with front of house on the nights, Sheringham Community Wardrobe for the amazing costume and accessories - what a treasure trove of theatrical delights that place is and to all the businesses in Cromer, Sheringham, Holt and Aylsham who kindly displayed posters for us.
We are looking for actors and volunteers to help us with future productions, find us on Facebook, Chalk Reef Amateur Productions.

CROMER and SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB
Such is the wealth of experience and expertise among the members of Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club that both the speakers at our early 2017 programme were existing members. In January Robert Last led the way with ‘Law and Disorder’, a perceptive insight into the difficult work of a solicitor. Having retrained after spending his early career as a Master Baker he took us through the varied and demanding activities faced by solicitors in guiding clients through the law and avoiding any likely disorder, helped along by a string of discreet anecdotes.
Our February speaker, Andrew Hyatt, an endodontist, raised the question ‘Why did I prefer that wine?’ Having pondered this often, members were treated to a fascinating account of the whole range of factors involved in wine- making, from those involved in grape production like geology, aspect, drainage, hours of sunshine and type of vine, to the critical balance between quality and yield. We were advised that most cheaper wines need drinking in a short time (not a problem!) but many more expensive wines mature after perhaps 15 or 16 years. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for! Andrew finished generously by inviting members to taste two red wines, one a recent bottling the other much older and clearly better.
Our next speaker, on Tuesday 7th March, is Chris Armstrong with the intriguing title ‘Anything from a Pin to an Elephant’. Could this be a talk about Harrods….or car-boot sales…? If you would like to find out please contact our Lunch Secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306, or visit our website wwwcandsprobus.club for more information.

Norman Lamb welcomes 'constructive' meeting with Prime Minister on NHS and Care Convention
A cross party group of MPs co-coordinated by Norman Lamb have welcomed the outcome of a meeting with the Prime Minister on the future of the NHS and Social Care.
In a meeting with a delegation of MPs from the Lib Dems, Labour and the Conservatives earlier this month, the Prime Minister agreed to initiate a cross-party dialogue with her newly-appointed Health Adviser, James Kent.
The meeting was attended by Norman Lamb, Sarah Wollaston, Dan Poulter, Hugo Swire, Meg Hillier, and Frank Field, representing a much wider group of colleagues who have called on the government to establish an NHS and Care Convention.

Commenting after the meeting, Norman Lamb MP said: “I very much welcomed the positive and constructive discussion with the Prime Minister. Mrs May appeared seemed willing to engage in a serious dialogue about how best to secure the future of our NHS and social care services. The future of the NHS and Social Care is more important than party politics, which has completely failed to come up with real solutions. The public are crying out for politicians to stop shouting at each other, and instead work together to make difficult decisions to ensure that patients get the right care and treatment when they need it. There is a real urgency to this situation, and now is the time to act. Today’s meeting was an encouraging first step, and I look forward to meeting with her advisers as soon as possible.”
Sarah Wollaston said "The scale of the challenge across health and social care is so great that we have to take a cross party approach to finding solutions and setting out the options to the public, including the consequences of inaction."

Seeds
By Beckie Grimmer from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners
Eating our lunch, a friend of mine asked, somewhat out of the blue, ‘Do those lotus seed heads make you feel uncomfortable?’ and pointed at a floral display. Looking at the curious, holed pods I replied, ‘no, not really’ and so he introduced me to the term Trypophobia – a proposed phobia of irregular patterns or clusters of small holes or bumps. Lotus seed heads, along with other surfaces like honeycomb, makes his skin crawl and fills him with disgust. I hope he wasn’t put off his dinner too badly. This dark, bleak, time of year happens to be time for horticultural divulgence (or for some, restraint), poring through a plethora of seed catalogues, bringing new excitement and inspiration for the growing season. But what about the appreciation for the seed themselves? Well, did you know:
The oldest seed grown into a viable plant was Silene stenophylla (narrow-leafed campion), a flower native to Siberia of which more than 600,000 seed were found buried in squirrel hibernation burrows beneath the permafrost. Radiocarbon dating has confirmed the seed are 31,800 ±300 years old, from the Upper Palaeolithic, around the time early humans were creating cave art.
01692 405301
The world’s smallest seeds are produced by certain tropical
epiphytic orchids found in the rainforest and their size allows them to blow into the canopy to germinate. At 85 micrometres long (1 micrometre = 0.001 millimetre) they are below the resolving power of the human eye.
The largest seed in the world is produced by the Lodoicea maldivica palm (coco de mer) native to the Seychelles archipelago and surrounded by myth and legend. It can reach 30 cm long, with a 90cm circumference and weigh up to 25kg – oh, and it often resembles a human bottom, leading people to believe that the trees got up to make love on stormy nights. A historical botanical name for the plant was Lodoicea callipyge, with callipyge coming from the Greek meaning ‘beautiful buttocks’. If you want to incorporate seed heads as part of your garden’s interest, or as a boost for wildlife, here are some suggestions for you to grow at home: Dipsacus fullonum (teasel) Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) Lunaria annua (honesty) Helianthus (sunflower) Papaver somniferum (poppy) Phlomis russeliana (Turkish sage) Cynara cardunculus (cardoon)
Echinops ritro Allium Agapanthus Let us not forget ornamental grasses: Stipa gigantean (golden oats) Miscanthus sinensis
Some of these plants set lots of seed and spread quickly, so be sure to do some research before introducing them to your patch.
Clean and store your seed correctly to prevent mould, insect infestation or reduced viability (ability to germinate). It’s recommended that you dry your seeds thoroughly then store them in sealed jars in a dark, dry place with consistent cool temperatures. I shall collect and order in my seed with an additional gratitude this year, knowing that I will enjoy their forms and adaptations without the shudders, creeps or nausea of Trypophobia.

Public Space Protection Order consultation underway
North Norfolk District Council calls on public to comment on locations of new Public Space Protection Orders
Public Space Protection Orders impose conditions on the use of an area, such as restrictions on dogs or the drinking alcohol in a public place. North Norfolk District Council is currently consulting with residents on a large number of Public Space Protection Orders.
Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett Cabinet Member for Environmental Services said “This is a great chance for residents to have their say on protection of local areas from behaviours that could affect enjoyment of their environment. It is vital we all strike a balance as a community between tolerance and ensuring a few individuals don’t spoil our public spaces for the rest of us or endanger our environment. Please take part in the consultation and have your say.” Public Space Protection Orders or PSPOs were introduced under the Government’s Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act, 2014. The Orders forbid certain activities in a geographical area and replace Gating Orders, Dog Control Orders and Designated Public Place Orders.
Activities covered by PSPOs include restricting the use of a highway late at night, the drinking of alcohol in a public space or restricting dogs from a particular, designated location.
The Council proposes to introduce three district-wide PSPOs. These are: • No dog fouling (this is currently in place under previous legislation): any person seen not clearing up after their dog on any publicly accessible land • Dog to be put on lead : when requested by authorised officer on any land defined as publicly accessible. This would be used when a dog is out of control and causing either fear of attack or harm to other dogs and/or people; • No Chinese lantern and mass balloon releases : this would cover any mass releases of these objects from all Council land.
To view all the proposed orders and the areas they cover, and comment, go to the Council’s website: www.north-norfolk.gov.uk The consultation will run until 3 March 2017 after which a report will go to Cabinet in April.

Bard and bullets in live orchestral concert
A magical mix of classical music and words by William Shakespeare are being conjured up in a live orchestral concert at Sheringham Little Theatre in March.
The Flights of Fantasy evening features Sinfonia Viva, well known in north Norfolk for their appearances at Blickling Hall's summer Proms concerts.
It combines two works of "storytelling bravado" - Der Freischutz by Weber is based on a German folk tale of romance, rivalry and marksmanship, and The Bard's dreamlike A Midsummer Night's Dream mingled with

Mendelssohn’s music.
Organisers say both works take a highlydramatic and carnivalesque approach to issues such as feminism, relationships and love.
Actor and producer Simon Hollingworth and the orchestra have reimagined the two classic tales through narration and chamber music. It is part of a series of high quality orchestral concerts developed by North Norfolk District Council in partnership with national charity Orchestras Live which aims to take top quality classical music to new people and places.
The concert is at Sheringham Little Theatre on Saturday March 4 at 7.30. Tickets are £18

Exciting things happening at Garden Centre Overstrand

Serving locally and sustainably sourced produce, The Potting Shed offers an array of culinary delights.

And if that wasn’t enough, the garden centre are now busy planning four market-style events throughout 2017. Dates for your diary: 4th June, 24th September, 5th November and 3rd December.

North Norfolk District Council hosts exhibition of photography New print and canvas collection showcases local photographer
North Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery welcomes local artist John Mezzetti with a collection of photographs.
Cromer resident John has been a photographer for 30 years. This collection of prints and prints on canvas explore portraits with landscape, urban and environmental themes.
John said “I first became interested in photography in my late teens, and took an O level in it at Paston Sixth Form in North Walsham. My work comes out of where I live. North Norfolk offers so much material that can be interpreted in so many ways that there really never is a blank canvas here.
Roots taken at Felbrigg
“There is also a very particular light in North Norfolk, near the coast – the mornings and nightfall are a photographer’s friend, every day there is something new that can be caught by the lens. I’m so pleased to be able to exhibit at the District Council.”
John’s photographs will be for sale.
Cllr Maggie Prior Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said “It’s great to see photography in the Council’s exhibition space. Photography is something so many people have the technology to do these days and to see it done well can be hugely inspirational. Do come and see John’s exhibition, and if you are an artist yourself then apply to show your work in the Council gallery.”

Yesterday’s Love and Laughter and now Yesterday’s Hearts and Homes
Did you know that there are two new books available set in a village not so very far from where you live?
The first one, Yesterday’s Love and Laughter, appeared about a year ago and is set in the 1950s and tells the tale of people who we all know.
There is a young farm-worker who lives alone in a tied cottage until his sister comes to live with him. She is not easy to live with but, as usual, the days pass. He works on a small farm along with his workmates and it is fascinating to read about the kind of work that farm-workers did about 60 years ago. We pass a year on the farm and see the pattern of the changing seasons. Changes also take place in the home and these are easier to live with.
This book was enjoyed by many people and so more copies of this are now available. Having read it, there are many who wanted to know how the people in it got on and so a brand new book, Yesterday’s Hearts and Homes, will soon be available.
But don’t miss the first one.

so firmly planted in 1935 in a village near here that they cannot be pulled up. In his early years as the son of a smallholder, work on the fields and with the pigs and chickens was a natural and expected part of life and so time and memory remove any barriers to him revisiting places and faces of yesterday.
Both books will shortly be available in a shop near you now. If you do buy one, Geoffrey trusts that you will enjoy these gentle but interesting, crime-free but exciting, stories. If you are new to these books, it is important to read Yesterday’s Loves and Laughter first. If you buy both you have a treat in store for these dark winter nights.

Dear Margaret,
A request to anyone who lives in my area to come forward and report noise i.e. droning, humming, that can only be heard in the house at night. My neighbour and I have been trying to get this solved for nearly 9 years to no avail. From time to time there is respite but not very often. We think it could be coming from the Sewage works but cannot seem to solve anything. It vibrates through my house and can be very loud. If anyone has heard any noise, please could they Contact environmental health or Anglian Water as the more people report, hopefully we could get peace and quiet.
Also a request to people locally not to feed seagulls near resident’s houses. They do not need feeding. They are messy, as many as 60 plus have been around and more coming if food is given.
Thank you. Mrs Kathryne Smith, Cromer, Address supplied.

Crab & Lobster Festival hands out grants totalling £5,080 to community groups across Cromer and Sheringham The Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival has proudly handed over grants totalling £5,080 to local charities and organisations.
The money, raised from the sale of more than 100 decorated beach huts at last year’s Festival auction, was distributed between 25 groups. Representatives from each organisation were joined by members of the Festival’s committee at a presentation on Sunday 29 January at The Constantia in East Runton.
Festival Chairman Tony Shipp opened the presentation by thanking all those who had helped make the Festival and auction in 2016 such a success. The organisations who received grants from the scheme were: The Cromer Mardlers, Sheringham in Bloom, Back to the Drawing Board, Sing Your Heart Out, Ladybird PreSchool Nursery, Playing for Cake, Love for Leo, Sheringham Museum, Banningham Defibrillator Fund, Cromer Christmas Lights Volunteers, 1st Cromer Sea Scouts, Friends of North Lodge Park, Cromer RNLI, Waveney Stardust Trust, National Coastwatch Institution – East Runton, Cromer Academy, Cromer Exhibition Foundation, Sheringham Woodfields School, Cromer Carnival Security Team, Sheringham Playpark Revamp,
Roughton Under 5s Playgroup, Cromer Girl Guiding, Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society and Cromer and District Garden Society. On receiving their grant, 1st Cromer Sea Scouts said “This grant will help us enormously towards the much needed refurbishment of our very dilapidated Scout Headquarters kitchen. We've been raising funds towards this for a few years and we have at last almost reached our goal. We would like to thank the Festival for awarding us this grant."
Many of the projects which were successful will be working will local children including 1st Cromer Sea Scouts (funding to refurbish the hall), Sheringham Woodfields School (funding to introduce sensory lighting), Cromer Girl Guiding (funding for hall maintenance) and Cromer & District Garden Society (funding their annual Schools Garden Competition).
Cromer Exhibition Foundation will use their grant to provide grants to Cromer schoolchildren who are going on to Further or Higher Education to help with course materials. Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “This year’s grants help to continue the Festival’s tradition of raising money for local charities through the
Annual Charity Auction and we are delighted that so many local community groups will benefit from them. “The date of the launch and details of this year’s trail will be announced in the next few weeks. All organisations and businesses who supported the Crab & Lobster Festival Art Trail last year are to be thanked for their support and will be contacted in the near future. It is hoped that they will continue this in the coming year.”
Over the past three years, the Crab & Lobster Festival has donated over £35,000 to local charities. At a time when fundraising is an uphill challenge, voluntary and community groups are more important than ever before and these grants will really help at a grassroots level.
The Festival will be announcing details of their annual art trail for 2017 in the coming weeks. In 2017 the Festival will run 20-21 May. Sponsorship opportunities are now available. Please contact the Festival via enquiries@crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk Photos: Dave Hubba Roberts

Burns Night Supper with a difference was organised by Cittaslow Aylsham and Slow Food Aylsham at the end of January. While most of the evening followed the time-honoured pattern, the Address to the Haggis was performed by local lady, Alan O’Rourke Immortal Memory Alan O’Rourke proposed a toast to the Grizelda Tyler who, with immortal memory of Robbie Burns
her Sottish ancestry, added a female dimension to a traditionally male event.
The customary menu of Haggis, Neeps & Tatties was supplemented by cottage pie for those whose taste does not extend to the mighty Scottish dish but everybody agreed that the dessert of Cranachan (whipped cream, oats, raspberries and a dash of whisky) was a great finale to a delicious meal.
Over 60 diners enjoyed the evening with proceeds going to support the work of Slow Food and Cittaslow in the town, including the annual Food Festival and summer cooking demonstrations in the Market Place as well as other, non-food-related activities.

Looking for your dream home? Don’t forget to make sure your new property is not carrying any hidden liabilities.
When buying a house do you know what kind of issues are checked by your solicitor during the transaction? It is the role of your conveyancer to ensure that the property you are purchasing is legally sound, the rights of clients are protected during the transaction and your new property is not carrying any hidden liabilities.
For most of us, buying or selling a property is one of the most significant financial transactions we ever carry out, so it is vital to get the best possible expertise to guide you through all stages of the property transaction.
A lot of our legal work is reviewing properties in rural areas throughout Norfolk which do not have access to mains drainage i.e. sewers. In the absence of effluent infrastructure, a number of independent sewerage systems can be utilised to provide rural sanitation. However, each type brings with it a raft of regulations and potential pitfalls, with large sums of money at risk if they are not up to scratch.
A recent property transaction in rural Norfolk saw the discovery of a Septic tank that was over 100 years old buried in the garden! If our client had gone ahead and purchased this property with a septic tank which is not fit for use, it would have been their responsibility to fully decommission

Report for Cromer WI Meeting February
In spite of the cold weather we welcomed 41 members and 1 new member. Our speaker was James Begley who told us of the “Role of the Community First Responders”. They are a group of volunteers who are sent to emergency calls as required to give reassurance and minor assistance to patients before the paramedics arrive. We were told of the importance of them getting to the correct address especially in the dark and we were told of ways of making sure that house names and numbers can be easily seen. To aid the emergency we were told about the Lions Message in a bottle scheme. This consists of a container which contains a form with all medical details on it. There are also stickers which are placed in a visible point in the house that shows any medic to look in the fridge and find these details. All members were issued with one of these canisters and we were told that these can also be collected from the local branch of the Lions Club. Plans were made to go Greyhound Racing at Great Yarmouth, and a visit to the Assembly Rooms, both in March. Other destinations were discussed for trips later in the year. New clubs are being set up for walking, reading and sewing and names were taken from members who would like to attend.
The competition of an item beginning with the letter L was won by Judy Roberts with Brenda Boyd second and Anita Jacobs third.
Our speaker for March is Mr C Hardy who is talking about “Cosmo’s Boots”. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2 pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

Sponsored Boxing Day Swim Raises Money for Cromer RNLI The 2016 Boxing Day swim raised over £4000 for Cromer RNLI.
On a chilly 4 February Clive Hedge from the North Norfolk Beach Runners and members of Tony West’s family attended Cromer Pier. They were there to see a presentation of a cheque for £4078.13 handed over to Cromer RNLI.
With several members of Cromer’s RNLI having just returned from the first ’shout’ of 2017, it was also appropriate that the Boxing Day swim had been dedicated to Tony West ‘ Mr Cromer’ , who was a keen supporter of the RNLI. His grandson had raised over £700, which is an achievement for such a young person.
His wife Amanda was also in attendance to see the cheque being presented and to hear Clive give his thanks to not only the RNLI but also the St John Ambulance and coastguards.
If you are new to Fit Together, please arrive 20 mins early. For more information contact Melanie Brown on 07766 259999.
