St John Ambulance appeals for youth helpers in Cromer

Organisers of St John Ambulance's Cromer unit are appealing for up to three new volunteers to step forward as youth helpers.

Successful candidates for these roles will work with the unit’s youth leaders and cadets and assist with the ongoing training of these young people in first aid and other valuable life skills.

Cadets are St John Ambulance's volunteers aged between 10 and 17 years old. Youth leaders help them learn the skills needed to save a life, as well as guiding them through games and activities to work towards their Grand Prior Award, the highest accolade that can be achieved by a St John Ambulance Cadet. Dear Margaret,

Having followed the fortunes of Cromer under 10s football team this season, I recently watched an away game at Aylsham.

The set up there is excellent : quite a few pitches, substantial clubhouse/changing rooms, and an ample car parking area. I've been told that similar facilities are in use at Holt, Sheringham, and North Walsham.

Holden MyChoice offers "Home Test Drive Service" to North Norfolk residents. Although known to many in the area for Volvo, Honda, Renault and Dacia car sales, The Norwich based Holden Group have recently launched "MyChoice" offering used cars from a variety of other manufacturers as well.

MyChoice customers not only receive main dealer levels of customer service but each car purchased comes with a minimum of 9 months MOT, 12 months warranty and will not require a service for at least 4 months or 4000 miles. In addition they also offer the next service and MOT free of charge at one of their Holden Group service centres, with collection and delivery available.

Brand Manger Simon Hawkins says; "Not everyone wants to buy one of the models offered by our franchise brands. So if it's a good quality car and offers great value for money we advertise it for sale on our website and Heigham Street forecourt. If you can't get to us, we'll even bring the car out to you!"

Cromer, meanwhile have no home pitch having to play home games wherever they can - a far from ideal situation.

Is it correct that land was made available some time ago for the provision of a football centre for all Cromer teams? If so, why was it rejected? If the offer of land for a football centre had been accepted is it possible that it could have been up and running by now? Had this been case is it not also possible that the Cromer team playing at Cabbell Park would have vacated long ago, thereby allowing the construction of a new Doctors Surgery, a much needed and vital facility for the whole community?

On a lighter note, anyone with an hour to spare on a Sunday morning should come and watch Cromer under 10s (if you can find out where they are playing). You will see some surprisingly good football played in the true spirit of the game.

Once you have found a vehicle of interest at holdenmychoice.co.uk you can arrange to have the car delivered to your home or work address for viewing at your convenience. An experienced advisor (not a salesman) will bring the car out and explain all of it's features. If you're considering part exchanging your old car they can take a look at that at the same time. You can specify the length of the visit in advance and they will not stay a minute longer unless asked.

"I have lived in North Norfolk all my life and I appreciate that a lot of local people either don't have the time to drive to Norwich or wouldn't feel comfortable driving an unfamiliar car on busy roads. We want to make the whole process of buying a used car as easy as possible". For those without internet access all enquiries and bookings can also be made by telephone - 01603 954499.

Walk towards a cure for Parkinson’s in Norfolk

People in Norfolk are being asked to pick up the pace against Parkinson’s this year at Walk for Parkinson’s – Blickling Estate on Saturday 13 May, one of a series of walk events to be held across the UK for Parkinson’s UK during 2017.

Walk for Parkinson’s offers the opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to get involved in a fun and active day out, while helping the charity step ever closer to a cure.

There are a range of distances around the grounds of the estate on offer to suit everyone, including a 2.5 mile and 5.5 mile walk to choose from.

Last year, 114 people took part in the walk at Blickling Estate to raise an impressive £11,000 between them, and the charity hopes to boost the fundraising total even more this year.

Sky Sports Presenter and Champion of Walking for Parkinson’s UK Dave Clark was diagnosed with Parkinson’s himself in 2011. Dave is encouraging as many people as possible to step up at the event.

He says “In 2016 I completed my own 200-mile Coast to Coast walk for Parkinson’s UK, it was tough but the sense of achievement when I crossed the finish line was fantastic. I know not everyone can walk that far, which is why our Walk for Parkinson’s at Blickling Estate with a choice of distances, is perfect for everyone.

“2017 is going to be our most ambitious year yet for the Walk for Parkinson’s series. With every pound that we raise we get closer to a cure. So please join us at Blickling Estate and help us step closer to our goal of improving the aim to appeal to younger women. Visitors welcome. As well as walkers, the charity is on the look-out for volunteers to help register people at the start/finish area or to be a walk marshal at various points on the route during the day.

Cromer Times 513 March 11th 2017

Norman Lamb criticises 'extraordinary' failure to consult over bed closures Norman Lamb MP has hit out at plans to cut the number of local patient beds without any consultation, after North Norfolk CCG served notice on the beds it commissions at Benjamin Court in Cromer and Cranmer House in Fakenham.

Mr Lamb believes that the CCG may be in breach of its legal obligations and has asked to meet with CCG leaders urgently.

In November, the Norfolk Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee (NHOSC) was notified that the closure of beds at Cranmer House, to be replaced with a new ‘supported care’ model, was no longer being considered after strong local opposition. However, the CCG this week announced that beds in Cranmer House and Benjamin Court would be decommissioned without any consultation with the local authority. Under the Local Authority (Public Health, Health and Wellbeing Boards and Health Scrutiny) Regulations 2013, CCGs have a duty to consult the local authority about any proposal they have ‘under consideration’ for a substantial development of or variation in the provision of health services. As part of the consultation process, the CCG is required to notify the local authority of the date by which a final decision will be taken as to whether to proceed with the proposal.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “It seems extraordinary to serve notice that these beds will be de-commissioned without any prior consultation. I strongly suspect that the CCG is in breach of its statutory duty to consult on the plans before they were finalised, given that it amounts to a significant change in the provision of local healthcare services. The apparent view that there is no requirement to consult because the closures apply to the beds, rather than the units themselves, is hard to justify, especially when the loss of beds could reduce support for frail elderly people for whom care in the home is not appropriate. The CCG itself states that it is introducing a new model of care. This is the sort of change that should involve consultation with the local community. The Overview and Scrutiny Committee should have had the opportunity to consider and feedback on these plans before any final decision was taken. Instead, the bed closures are being pushed through without any local scrutiny. After the original plans to close beds at Cranmer House seemed to have been shelved just three months ago, this u-turn by the CCG doesn’t inspire confidence. “I am asking for an urgent meeting with the CCG to explore alternatives to these closures. As well as a reduction in beds, it seems inevitable that jobs will be lost and I am happy to meet with staff who will be affected by these plans.”

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2017? 20 17 ?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that Christmas can be a difffficult time for many people or resolutions are made to resolve issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

THE NORTH & WEST NORFOLK SOLICITORS Case study: John and Mary By Jane Arnup – Elderly Client Services, Hayes + Storr

John and Mary are in their late 80s. John has a good occupational pension but Mary has none. They have Wills leaving everything to each other and then to their son Sam. John has suffered poor physical health and Mary is becoming ‘very forgetful’. They have supported each other and have carried on living in their home. As Mary has no pension, other than State pension, they put all their savings in her name to lessen income tax. They own their bungalow.

John suffers a fall and is admitted to hospital and, as Mary cannot cope alone, she goes into temporary residential care. When John returns home from hospital, it is too much for him to manage to look after Mary too, so she stays in the care home.

The Local Authority visit John to assess Mary’s contribution to her care costs. The house is ignored, as John is living there. Mary’s state pension and the joint bank account are taken into account but the main problem is that the savings in Mary’s sole name of £80,000 are added in too, so that Mary has to pay the full cost of care.

John is advised to see a solicitor. Her advice is as follows:

John claims for Attendance Allowance from the DWP. This is non-means-tested and non-taxable.

John transfers half the money from their joint account into in a new account in his sole name. He gets all his income paid into this account.

As Mary had not made a Power of Attorney, an application to the Court of Protection is made for the appointment of a Deputy for Mary, to deal with her property and financial affairs.

Attendance Allowance is also claimed for Mary and the solicitor becomes appointee for Mary’s state pension and other benefits, until the application for Mary’s Deputy is in place.

John severs the ‘joint tenancy’ of their bungalow so his half does not automatically pass to Mary, if he dies.

John makes a new Will giving everything to their son Sam, so that John’s money and assets do not pass to Mary, to be used on care fees,

in the event that John dies before Mary.

Once the Deputy appointment is through, the Deputy applies to the Court of Protection for the transfer of half of the investments back to him (£40,000).

Sadly, John dies. £40,000 of savings are paid into John’s estate. The house is sold and John’s half and everything else in John’s estate passes to Sam, under John’s Will. If John hadn’t changed his Will, his whole estate would have passed to Mary and might all have been swallowed up in Mary’s care costs.

Mary has enough to pay for her care her from her half of the house sale proceeds so she is reasonably provided for according to the law.

The moral of the story, is that John took advice just in time, particularly as to changing his Will. It would have been even better if John and Mary had both made a Lasting Power of Attorney, as this costs much less than an application to the Court of Protection, for the appointment of a Deputy. Happily, most of the family wealth was preserved for the next generation. “This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Young Singers Join Mikado Cast

A classic comic opera is giving local youngsters the chance to hone their singing skills.

A handful of up-and-coming singers are joining the cast of a touring company performing The Mikado at Sheringham Little Theatre.

It gives them the chance to perform the witty words and jaunty tunes of Victorian duo Gilbert and Sullivan alongside professionals.

The company, Opera Anywhere, does educational work and visited the Sheringham venue last year to stage Pirates of Penzance. Due to its success, and quality of the

Mark Horner, who plays one of the adult leads Poo-Bah, said "Last year we thought the youngsters would sing two or three choruses, but they were so good they did the whole show. This is the first time we have had youngsters take on some of the main roles."

During a break in rehearsals Zac Green, 20, from Fakenham, who plays nobleman Pish-Tush, said "Gilbert and Sullivan are not on every young performer's radar, so this is a great opportunity."

Katie Thompson, 19, from Knapton who is Peep-Bo and has ambitions to be a professional singer, said the experience was a bonus for her CV, and a brilliant way to be introduced to opera. She added "I knew the Three Little Maids song which seems really catchy and simple but did not realise how tricky it is with lots of harmonies."

Her mother and theatre director Debbie Thompson said "We are delighted Opera Anywhere wanted to come back here, offering a great chance for young people to work with a professional company.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

At this time of the year, Stephanie gets lots of calls from people whose cats have gone missing and are hoping that we have taken them into care. Unfortunately, the likelihood of this happening so quickly, is very rare.

Invariably, the cats are young males that have not been neutered and have therefore disappeared in search of female cats. These cats can, and will, travel miles and, being so focused on finding a female, will have a complete disregard for their own safety. They take their lives in their paws crossing busy roads and also getting into fights with other likeminded cats, some of which may have been infected with FIV or FELV. They often lose their bearings and cannot find their way home, ending up as strays and surviving as best they can until someone realises their plight and contacts us or another similar charity. All the heartache could have been avoided if only their owners had got them neutered. Contacting us for help with this is a far better option.

“Birdie, caught in the act? No he does use his litter tray!”

One of the consequences of not getting cats neutered is the number of unwanted kittens that come into our care and, at present, we have several nice young cats that either arrived from a colony or were found living outside. Although they are used to their fosterer and her family (and all love having lots of cuddles from them) they tend to hide when strangers visit. One such cat is Birdie, who joined us from a local

business site when the workers felt he was in danger of being hurt. He is a little bossy boots with his companions and, as can be seen here, full of mischief. These young cats will all make lovely pets but need slightly more time to settle.

Independent Bicycle Shop Marks First Year...

Since opening its doors in March 2016, family run business Doctor Wheelgood has been providing the local community with expert and quality service regarding anything bike. Bike doctor Tom and his Dutch wife Godelieve have always dreamt of having their own shop and after finally taking the plunge last spring it took off with a flying start and they experienced a busy summer.

Tom said, "There was clearly a need for a new local bike shop in North Walsham and it is wonderful to see cycling becoming ever more popular in the UK. Occasionally, we look back nostalgically at our Amsterdam days when I trained and worked as a mechanic in a busy bike shop in the capital's city centre. Meanwhile my wife-to-be Godelieve was flying around as a cycle courier to finance her studies. Looking for a quieter life we moved to Norfolk where I grew up, swapping flat Holland for beautiful country lanes."

Godelieve commented, "Doctor Wheelgood offers years of experience in the trade combined with a love for anything bike in a well stocked shop situated on the Mundesley Road in North Walsham. Anything from servicing & repairs, wheel and bike builds, as well as parts, accessories and cycle sales, you'll likely find what you need. Having recently joined the “Support North Walsham’s Independent Shops” campaign, we’re hoping to encourage more people to shop locally and be pleasantly surprised at the great range of products and services on offer. This will, in turn, help keep the town vibrant and alive, and attract more visitors." With spring on its way, it’s that time again to get your bike out of the shed and give it some TLC. Doctor Wheelgood is ready to help you with this!

REVIEW – CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS

YOUNG MUSICIANS' CONCERT HELD AT TEMPLEWOOD NORTHREPPS

Six young musicians, ages ranging from 15 to 18 years, performed this concert of sheer delight to a capacity audience.

played with confident control.

The artists, selected by Ro Curtis, produced a concert that upheld and confirmed that in this part of Norfolk, we are blessed with an abundance of young people who have chosen to achieve a standard of performance that brings joy, not only to the listener, but also to the parents and teachers who with their support and skills make a concert of such artistic excellence possible.

Elin Davies (Clarinet), Tom Oliver (Classical Guitar), Lucy Thalange (Mezzo Soprano), Jad Grainger (Piano), Leila Hooton (Flute) and Andrew Harsley (Cello).

Elin Davies opened the concert playing pieces by Poulenc, Williams and Itturalde, the Poulenc being almost a frenetic composition

Tom Oliver brought a calmness to the room with very sensitive performances of three pieces by Tarrega, Navaez and Turina, creating an atmosphere of tranquillity.

Lucy Thalange produced a most powerful voice projection, dynamically varying from double forte to pianissimo with perfect intonation and breath control.

Jad Grainger – piano – with an ambitious choice, Beethoven's Fugue Op 106, gave a most powerful account of this work, obviously his very own interpretation!

Leila Hooton played three pieces, one being Icicle, displayed a masterly control of this haunting impressionistic composition – the highlight for me as it was completely unpredictable as the piece progressed one

had to imagine the composer's intention.

Andrew Harsley produced cello playing at its very best, the most beautiful tone, intonation, perfect phrasing and tone gradations with tender sensitivity. His performance of Trunckin' through the South brought this concert to a very happy and satisfying conclusion.

The accompanists, Francis Fox, Hannah Watson and Clare Harsley were superb, certainly enhancing the performances of the soloists.

An afternoon in which the young captivated the admiration of the more mature without doubt! Terry Keeler

CHORAL SOCIETY SHOWCASES YOUNG SOLOISTS AT mezzo soprano and Simon Mulligan, baritone. PRE-EASTER CONCERT

Preparations are well underway for Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society’s next concert in Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 8 April at 7.30 pm. The performance will mark the eve of Holy Week with an evening of French reflective music by DuruflÊ and Poulenc. Conducted by David Ballard the major work will be Maurice DuruflÊ’s Requiem with organ accompaniment by Anthony Gowing.

Over recent years the choir has frequently worked closely with young singers to encourage them in their musical careers and they continue this tradition by introducing two talented young performers Charli Andrews,

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society

Charli Andrews is currently studying Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University. Alongside this she continues her music studies under the tutorage of Carole Tims and is currently singing with the Cambridge Philharmonic choir, most recently performing in a semi-staged version of Verdi's opera "Falstaff". Later in the year, she will be performing with the choir at both Kings College and Ely Cathedral. Before moving to Cambridge, Charli spent 11 years with the Broadland Youth Choir, the last of which she was Head Chorister.

Simon Mulligan is currently a student at Margaret Howard Theatre College in Watford, North West London, where he is studying Performance Training in Musical Theatre. He has been singing from a young age, both in Musical Theatre performances and choirs, performing a range of contemporary and classical music. During August 2016, he made his West End Debut at London’s Ambassador’s Theatre, in a production of The Secret Garden. He is currently rehearsing a production of Grand Hotel, to be performed in Valetta, Malta, in early June 2017.

Tickets are on sale now at Sheringham Little Theatre telephone 01263 822347 or online at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com They can also be purchase in person at both K Hardware Cromer (opposite the venue) and Cromer Tourist Information Office.

Natural skin rejuvenation and PRP for non-surgical hair loss treatments at the coltishall cosmetic clinic. Cromer: 01263 514541

If you are a fan of totally natural methods of treatment and not keen on botox, fillers or lasers, etc., then there is a solution to provide results using your own tissue.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a solution derived from whole blood that is enriched in the platelet fraction. Historically, PRP has been applied to wound beds to promote healing of complex wounds. Over the last decade, it has served as a valuable therapeutic tool in various specialties such as maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, orthopaedics and sports medicine. In recent years it has been use increasingly in addressing aesthetic medical concerns.

We have been using it for last many years when patients asked for it but remained sceptical about claims being made. Our patients who had the treatment however reported great satisfaction with it and we are excited about the recent studies that show noticeable results in treatment of hair loss. Many published studies show that patient’s experienced substantial reduction in hair loss, rate of hair loss, improved hair thickness, ease of managing/styling hair, and their hair felt coarser or heavier after the treatment.

Luxury Mercedes vehicles for airport/seaport & long distance travel

How is PRP treatment carried out?

Your own blood is taken mixed with an anticoagulant solution and spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the rest of the blood. These platelets are rich source of a variety of growth factors, which then stimulate your own collagen or hair follicles to grow based on what is trying to be achieved.

What it does not do?

If you are after a quick fix for example filling out lines and wrinkles PRP does not do that instantly. It improves your skin quality and collagen slowly over time. It also works on acne scars but treatments take time to show results. So this is not a quick fix. It can help thinning hair but will not grow hair on totally bald scalp either.

What is Coltishall Clinic PRP advantage?

In keeping with our philosophy of only using top quality equipment and products, we isolate super PRP using the very best equipment for platelet isolation and concentration. We use a totally closed system to guarantee sterility. A lot of cheaper alternatives are messy to use and not closed systems. We use a high spec swing type centrifuge for maximum centrifugation and plasma production. Our closed system then separates and closes off plasma from other blood components. This is put through the

www.icarushines.co.uk

info@icarushines.co.uk

centrifuge a second time to generate the highest quality of platelet rich plasma for best results. So this is a two-step process for maximising results.

What methods of PRP application do you offer in the clinic?

We offer PRP either as a standalone treatment or in combination with some other treatments such as laser resurfacing or low-level laser therapy and some medication in case of hair restoration.

What is vampire facelift or Dracula therapy?

PRP has been given various names such as these because your own blood is used for regeneration process. Whilst PRP can help in facial rejuvenation we do not endorse the term facelift, as this is misleading.

Is everyone suitable?

It is only suitable for people who are in good general health without any significant medical concerns or systemic problems.

If you wish to try this promising new natural treatment for thinning hair or for improving your skin quality using your own growth factors then give us a call on 0800 0430737 or log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk

Community urged to pass on identity of dog foulers to Council

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

The roads leading to Fearns Field in Suffield Park are repeatedly being contaminated by dog excrement with Council patrollers discovering 15 in one morning last week.

Our competition was entitled ‘Back to School’ and best in show was Liz Crane with snowdrops in milk bottles and a small blackboard bringing back memories of school milk.

Fearns Field in Cromer identified as dog poo hotspot North Norfolk District Council is calling on people in Cromer to help identify irresponsible dog owners near a popular local park. Fearn Field itself, a favourite spot for children to play, is also suffering from dog fouling.

Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett Cabinet Member for Environment said “We have patrols all through the day trying to check on dog fouling and trying to identify the owners responsible for this. But we don’t have enough people to cover every foot of the roads and park at every moment of the day and night. So we’re calling on the communities of Cromer to help us help them. If you know who’s doing this, please tell us. If you see someone letting their dog foul and not picking up, report it with as much detail about the owner and the dog. It’s the few who ruin it for the rest of us, but together we can beat this.” The roads affected by significant fouling are Station Road, Carrington Road, Park Road and to a lesser extent Northrepps Road. Council officers are patrolling the area and have added path stencils along pavements to remind people they need to bag it and bin it. Dog excrement is also being sprayed different colours so officers can immediately identify new offences. If you see someone leaving their dog’s poo report it here: http://bit.ly/2lYfJSN with as much information about the timing, the identity of the owner, location and dog. If you feel it is safe to take a photograph of the owner and dog, please send that to us at ep@north-norfolk.gov.uk North Norfolk District Council has been running a #NoMessing campaign to raise awareness of dog fouling in North Norfolk. Cromer Chamber of Business update

The beating heart of our business community is seeing people in our town spending money locally. Having said that the internet can’t be ignored, and especially so social media. On Monday 27 February the Chamber held a very successful social media training event. Attendees heard stories of how members had had great success using Facebook, twitter and Instagram to grow their businesses by engaging with past, present and future customers. With winter nearly behind us and Easter just around the corner, the cycle of activity in the town begins once again. We will be encouraging all members to take try to peer through their customer’s eyes at their businesses and see how they might make the best of every opportunity. Maybe it’s giving those fascias a good clean, rearranging the window display or indeed reviewing their online presence. Asking a neighbour or a customer to give objective feedback can prove very valuable.

Our new Chairman Hazel Bright has chosen Nelson’s Journey as our charity this year and we look forward to raising funds for them.

Our amusing demonstrator was fellow member David Wright who created 6 lovely arrangements with plenty of greenery and colourful flowers on ‘It’s an Education’.

We went through the school subjects ending with drama and a display on War Horse complete with cane horse. Members are wary and garden gates are locked as David in on the hunt for greenery!

Next month our meeting starts at 7.20pm in Cromer Junior School. The demonstrator is Judy Barnham on ‘What did I find’ All welcome.

We are working closely with the Town Council and Cromer Pier on our join exhibition stand at the Royal Norfolk Show. We’re planning a bold eye catching stand at the show to greet the show visitors and tell them about everything that Cromer has to offer and what a great place it is to visit, stay and keep coming back to.

We are also working on the new Town Guide for this year. The company we are working with have been in and around the town collecting updated information. The new guide will be available ready for Easter.

Giving up giving up – Cromer Church opts to give generously for Lent instead

Cromer Church with St Martin’s has set itself the challenge to complete various acts of generosity this Lent.

Many of the parishioners from Cromer Parish Church with St Martin’s have signed up for ‘40acts’, a generosity challenge created by the charity Stewardship, which encourages

participants to do at least one different act of kindness each day of Lent. The challenge was followed by over 76,000 people last year between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, notching up an estimated 2 million generous acts in that time.

To kick off the challenge Cromer Church gave out ‘Love Heart’ sweets on Wednesday 1 March outside the Parish Church. This marked the start of their challenge, during which 40activists receive a daily email with their challenge and a thought for the day from one of 40 chosen Christian authors, leaders and celebrities (including Gogglebox vicar Rev Kate Bottley).

Simon Fenn, Head of Mission said “Through simple acts of kindness like baking for a neighbour, sending anonymous gifts or grabbing some rubber gloves and a bin bag and cleaning up our street, we hope that this Lent we’re able to give something back to our wonderful community. As well as doing individual acts during Lent, we have organised some creative events over the next seven weeks including bag packing at Morrisons and saturating Cromer with chocolate bars! So watch this space as we will share ours acts of random kindness on social media. Search for #40Acts #LoveCromer #LiveMission.”

Simon Fenn

Stewardship’s 40acts challenge has grown in popularity since the Christian charity first launched it in 2010. Six years on and millions of acts of generosity later, the challenge continues to astonish the team behind it.

Debbie Wright, Head of Content at Stewardship said “Every year more and more people choose to do Lent generously, and use generous acts to demonstrate their faith in the lead up to Easter. We never cease to be amazed at the creativity and kindness that we see, as people start to share their stories on social media. It’s great to see Cromer Parish Church with St Martin’s taking up the challenge and making a generous difference to the community of North Norfolk this Lent.”

3,000 square feet of high quality displays. Catering for all tastes and budgets. Suppliers of quality kitchen, bathroom equipment and ceramic tiles. We offer a ‘whole house’ package, from our free, no obligation design and quotation service, through to installation. A one stop shop for peace of mind. LAST YEAR’S BRIDESMAID IS NOW THE BRIDE – CHANDLER TRIUMPHS FOR THE FIRST TIME

After a full week of hard, competitive squash matches, two of Cromer’s increasing band of veteran members, both playing off scratch and evenly matched, contested the final of this year’s prestigious handicap tournament, and it was 70 year old John Chandler who came out on top, as he had to dig deep to beat his fellow veteran, Alan Harper, 15-7 6-15 14-16 15-9 15-7 in another absorbing and enthralling final.

Last year, Chandler was narrowly beaten in the final by John Baker, 17-15 in the fifth and when he had to undergo treatment for an ingrowing toenail on the morning of this year’s final he did fear that he might once again have to settle for the runners-up spot. However, this did not hamper him at all in the first game as he stormed into a 5-1 lead and then won five successive points at the end of the game to open up a 1-0 lead.

The second game was completely different as Harper, who was the club veterans’ champion three times between 2005 and 2009, opened up a 7-3 lead of his own and then won seven successive points to lead 14-5 before going on to take the game 15-6. The third game was the closest of the evening. Harper seemed to be cruising at 13-9 but Chandler fought his way back to 14-14 before Harper closed the game out 16-14 to open up what appeared to be a decisive 2-1 lead.

Chandler however is a canny player and, forsaking his favourite cross court drop shots, he started to hit the ball harder and as Harper, who had already played two demanding five game matches during the week, started to tire Chandler moved ahead from 9-8 to take the game 15-9 and draw level. Buoyed up by this success he stormed into an 8-2 lead in the deciding fifth game and although Harper battled hard Chandler went on to take the game 15-7 and the match 3-2 to win his first Cromer title of any description.

Earlier in the tournament Chandler was hard pressed by the 1992 runner-up Jean Spruce (+8) and was glad of a two point advantage on the handicap as he beat the 2013 champion Martin Sanville (-2) 15-13 17-15 15-7. Harper in turn was involved in the match of the tournament as he just did enough to beat the 2014 champion Peter Arbuthnot (+1) 16-14 15-6 15-17 14-16 15-13 before winning another five game thriller against the current team captain Matthew Jordan (-3), who beat him in the 2015 quarter-final, 15-12 in the fifth.
