We Won’t Wait
This year marks the 200th anniversary of James Parkinson’s first description of the condition which now bears his name.
Every hour someone in the UK is diagnosed with Parkinson’s, yet we are still unable to stop, slow down or reverse it.
This year’s Parkinson’s Awareness Week, Monday 10 to Sunday 16 April, sees the launch of the ‘We Won’t Wait’ campaign. Parkinson’s UK needs people to donate and support their new research. We need a breakthrough. Continued on page 4...

Cromer Flower Club
At our March meeting held at the Primary School bunches of daffodils were very kindly donated by Robert McNeil Wilson of West Beckham and were all sold in aid of this year’s charity Nelson’s Journey. The member’s competition was entitled ‘Hide and Seek’. Best in Show was a charming arrangement by Lynne Tester of hellebores on a wooden base with elves an owl and a ladybird tucked away.
The guest speaker this month was Judy Barnham and her subject was “What did I Find”. She has been rummaging in the back of her workroom and found some unusual containers for us in metal, a basket vase and a large branch off a Buddleia complete with a squirrel. These were filled with roses, carnations lilies and gerberas. Special thanks to Thumper for the use of his cage as a grid arrangement now that he has moved on to greener grass. The next meeting will be held on 24 April at 2pm in Cromer Community Hall and the guest speaker is Anne Bridge on ‘Flower Sellers’.

‘Benedict’s Cove’ Opens in Cromer
Cromer has a brand new gift shop in Garden Street – just look for the bright blue sign and canopy over the shop window!
‘Benedict’s Cove’ offers an exciting range of luxury and novelty soaps, bath and shower accessories, body scrubs, creams and oils, and a wide range of other things to pamper yourself with. Beautifully packed gift baskets are also available to mark birthdays and other special occasions. Over 90% of the products are UK manufactured, and none of the products involves testing on animals.
Our sewn items are made in Cromer and our earrings are made in Sheringham.
Also on offer are the ‘Spaceform’ range of glassware gifts, a great selection of non-carcinogenic candles and a specially commissioned ‘Cromer’ teddy bear.
Julie and her son Benedict moved to Cromer from Milton Keynes in early 2014. For Julie, the opening of ‘Benedict’s Cove’ is the fulfilment of a long held dream.
As for Benedict, after working full time for nearly three years as an unpaid volunteer in Cromer’s Sue Ryder shop, in order to get retail experience, it is especially exciting to work in a new shop with his name over the door!
Julie and Benedict look forward to welcoming you in their shop. While the product range should attract much interest from the summer tourist trade, the principal aim is to serve the local community and to offer a great choice of products and gifts all year round.

Gold Standard Cat Care Comes to Norfolk! Anyone who has ever owned a cat will recognise how particular they can be with their likes and dislikes, and the challenges this often poses in caring for them.
Here at Toll Barn Vets we have always known how important specialised care is to all our patients including cats! We are extremely proud to have been awarded Gold Standard Feline Friendly Practice status by the International Society for Feline Medicine, a leading authority on caring for cats. Toll Barn Vets is one of only 5 practices within the entire Norfolk and Suffolk region to achieve this award.
How does this help your cat? Being recognised as a Gold Standard Feline Friendly Practice means our premises and procedures were rigorously inspected and our staff demonstrated the high standard of cat care required by the Society. Our reception has a separate waiting area for worried (or just plain fussy!) cats including a platform to raise and cover cat baskets to help minimise stress during their stay. Our hospital wards have a “cat only” area to prevent any fighting between cats and dogs, and pheromone diffusers and large kennels complete with hiding holes, together with a selected variety of food, keep cats comfortable during their stay with us.
Our equipment and facilities for investigating disease and performing surgical procedures were also rated at the highest possible level and our ability to perform complicated surgical procedures and techniques such as blood pressure monitoring, tonometry (measuring intraocular pressure), x-rays, ultrasound and endoscopy entirely in-house enabled us to be accredited as a Gold Standard Practice.
In honour of our recent award (and our love for our feline patients) we are offering free of charge health checks with our qualified veterinary nurses for all our feline patients so we can spot any signs of disease early and offer the best possible chance of successful treatment.
Please give Toll Barn Vets a call on 01692 407126 to book your appointment.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2017? 20 17 ?
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that Christmas can be a difffficult time for many people or resolutions are made to resolve issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2017 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Cromer Skatepark
Fears that Cromer’s skatepark could be forced to close due to lack of support appear to have been overcome following a well-attended Annual General Meeting last month when a new Committee was formed and plans were formulated for a relaunch event to celebrate the park’s second anniversary in June. photos courtesy Dave ‘Hubba’ Roberts
Trustees needed for local charity
Have you been wondering about volunteering some time for a good cause, but want to use your particular gifts and skills?
Newly retired with some energy and enthusiasm, or in work but wanting to ‘give something back’ to your community?
Age Concern North Norfolk is a self-funded charity, based in Sheringham, working for the benefit of older people across central North Norfolk. It supports people aged 50+ (some with dementia) by providing a Day Services Hub, lunch club, Keep In Touch clubs, intergenerational activities and a Drop In/Befriending service.
If you have financial, human resources or past business expertise, your skills will be particularly valuable, but we welcome expressions of interest from all individuals who are willing to commit approximately 3-4 hours a month to volunteering with us as a Trustee.
Trustees usually serve for a period of three years and then can stand for re-election for a further period. You will be joining a team of dedicated people who will offer support whether you are new to this kind of volunteering or whether you are a seasoned volunteer.
We will value your unique skills and innovative ideas, together with support for fund raising events. We currently hold trustee meetings once a month on a Thursday afternoon, and meet for a shared lunch beforehand at the Day Services Hub in Sheringham.
Full information on what being a trustee involves is available at www.gov.uk/government/organisations/charity-commission

Norfolk Angling Club
Norfolk Angling Club, formed in 2013, is celebrating, following recent international selection and match results for its members.
As a small club with around 50 members, Norfolk Angling Club started out as a Monday night league for pleasure anglers to get together and fish, and although this ethos still continues at the Club, some of its members have taken match fishing to the highest level.
Some club members were recently selected to the SAMF (Sea Anglers Match Federation) GB Team, and recently competed on the North Norfolk beaches of Kelling in the 2017 SAMF Challenge, against strong opposition teams from the Police, Combined Armed Forces and the Fire Service. The two day match was fought hard by all teams, with anglers catching plenty of fish, including Dogfish and large Pouting. However, it was the SAMF Team and contributions from some Norfolk Angling Club Members, Simon Bone, Dene Conway, Richard Hipperson, Russell Taylor and Henry Randall, that ensured the final win for SAMF.
Four other members also received news in February that they have been selected for the 2017 England International Sea Angling
Squad: • Kimberley Lawn of Cromer has been selected for the Ladies Home Nations Team to compete in Wales in July. This is in addition to her selection to compete at the World Championships in South Africa in November. • Adam Molloy, of Cromer and a Cromer Academy student, has been selected for the Junior World Championship Team to compete in France in July. • Henry Randall of Cley has been selected for the Men’s Home Nations Team to compete in Wales in July, and Dene Conway of Ritegear Angling Centre, West Runton has also made selection to the Men’s squad. The England Team members are now actively fundraising to raise much needed funds, including doing raffles, selling England Junior Team Mugs, and 100 squares through Ritegear Angling Centre, and if anyone would wish to sponsor our England Team members or even donate a raffle prize, any help would be gratefully received.
The Club is also holding its annual Norfolk Sea Angling Festival on 8 and 9 April. This two day open angling match is to be held as a rover match on the beaches of North Norfolk and has a first prize of £500. Anyone interested in

Moss Taylor will lead a walk around an area which is famous for migrant birds, but which is largely inaccessible to the general public. We will leave the Muckleborough Collection car-park at 9am, explore a variety of habitats within Weybourne Camp, then visit Kelling Water Meadows and return back over Muckleborough Hill. We have scheduled the walk to (hopefully) catch a nice range of spring migrants, but birding at migration time is always highly weather-dependent. This is a moderate walk over
plus stalls and an Easter Egg tombola. All proceeds to the Famine Appeal through the Methodist Charity ‘All We Can’ which is the Methodist Church Relief and Development Fund supporting the Famine Appeal

North Norfolk Chorale to perform for Holy Week
During Holy Week the North Norfolk Chorale will sing excerpts from Handel’s Messiah at St Nicholas’s Church, North Walsham on Wednesday 12 April at 6.30pm. This will be an act of worship so there is no admission fee - a retiring collection will be held in aid of Church and Choir funds.
Jonathan Dodd, Musical Director of North Norfolk Chorale, said “the Messiah is so popular it needs no introduction from me. We shall be performing a selection of movements that give a good flavour of the work. And of course it will include the Hallelujah Chorus! Do come – everyone is most welcome”.
varied terrain (some of it possibly wet), with a short climb over Muckleborough Hill. Stout footwear is essential. We will return to the car-park between 12noon and 1pm. The Muckleborough Collection has facilities and a cafe. The Muckleborough Collection is just to the west of Weybourne Village, and the entrance is off the A149 coast road by Foxhills Campsite. Go through the gates (which will be open from 0830), proceed along the straight drive and turn right at the V1 doodlebug and long white building into the clearly marked carpark. The post-code for sat-navs is NR25 7EH. As usual, children are welcome if accompanied by wellbehaved adults, but we regret no dogs. Andy Clarke will co-lead.
Birdwatching Holidays on a Budget - Trevor Williams Thursday 27 April 7.30pm – 9.30pm
For those on a modest budget, who want to make the best of the birding opportunities on a foreign trip, this talk introduces a dozen or so potential venues for a birding holiday. Venue - Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX. Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. Please ensure that local residents can still access their driveways and there is sufficient clearance for agricultural vehicles to use the road. A torch might also be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing.

A Merry Christmas to all of my fellow Musicians A bit early you might say? Or is this an article that should have been published last December but got put on the wrong pile? No, I do actually mean Christmas 2017.
The problem is, you see, despite the world being confronted everywhere by Christmas advertisements from September onwards, we the members of the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band, are too focused on rehearsing and performing our busy seasonal programmes to notice anything else. Then, wham! we are suddenly jolted into realising, by some always got to be first musician handing out his greetings cards, that Christmas Day is only a week away.
This act of one-upmanship immediately throws me into panic mode. I start searching for my computer list of Band members and their partners. Why do I always have difficulty remembering computer file names? (mind you, come on, be fair, I haven’t needed the list for twelve months). Then I enquire into what unused Christmas cards are available. ‘I have four’ says my wife. ‘Four’ I say – ‘Four! I need ten times that many’. It is an exaggeration, but that’s what panic does.
I go into town and buy a pack of charity Christmas cards and sign them. From me and my ‘good lady’. A card for every musician. Then, with a sense of achievement. I stroll round the Band handing them out, feeling a sense of achievement over those yet to put pen to card. But, with an envelope still in my hand I

discover one musician is absent. Where is he? I am told by our Director of Music that he has gone away. Gone away! Yes, Mr X and his wife have flown off to the Caribbean. I am gobsmacked. I ask you, the things people do to get out of giving a Christmas card.
I am not going to mention any names. But you know who you are ‘Scrooge’. Still, I will keep his card until next year, or hold on to it until he doesn’t go away at Christmas.
Then the festivities have passed. Was there a Christmas? Band matters blur my memory. Christmas cards? What are Christmas cards? The Carol books, parts for Jingle Bells, I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas etc are all handed back in. Out comes a selection from Les Mis, some marches, themes from films and much more. Old favourites. Some crisp new scores. The Band is straight into rehearsing its Spring/Summer programme, which is growing by the minute. And there we are - out and about. Public events, garden fetes, religious services, concerts. Daylight lengthens. And then shortens. The seasons change, so does the music and what’s this on my chair? An envelope! It can’t be! It is! A Christmas card.
In case my pacemaker is sent into overdrive by the sudden realisation that I have a week to get and send greetings cards this December, I am bringing to the attention of all members of the Band the following message - ‘A Merry Christmas To All My Fellow Musicians’. Would somebody please ensure ‘Scrooge’ sees this.

Public information secures penalty for dog fouling couple North Norfolk District Council issues fixed penalty notice for dog fouling in West Runton A couple from Weybourne has been fined £60 for not bagging and binning their dog’s mess.
The offence took place in Water Lane, West Runton on 24 January and was captured on CCTV but it was the quick thinking of local business owners that ensured there was sufficient evidence to issue a fixed penalty notice (FPN).
Louise O’Shea and her partner Martin Hipkin, who run West Runton Café, witnessed the offence and took down the number plate of the vehicle driven by the couple. This information, along with the footage of the offence, was given to North Norfolk District Council. Louise said “No one wants to walk along the road and stand in dog mess, it’s just not nice. “As the owners of a café and car park near the beach we are really keen to assist the council in any way. We have to work together to make our

environment and the place we live clean and tidy.”
The offence was failure to comply with ‘The Fouling of Land by Dogs Order 2008’ and Sections 55, 56, 57 of the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act 2005. The order covers all land open to the air and to which the public are entitled or permitted to have access (with or without payment).
The fixed penalty notice was for £80, reduced to £60 for early payment
Cllr Angie Fitch Tillett, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said “This just shows that if we work together we can tackle dog fouling. We want to thank Louise and Martin for their help and encourage others to report dog fouling with as much detail as possible.
If a dog fouls at any time on land to which the Order applies and a person who is in charge of the dog at that time fails to remove the faeces from the land immediately, that person shall be guilty of an offence.
“We hope this fine sends a clear message to any irresponsible dog owners out there that not cleaning up after your dog will not be tolerated by our communities.”
Alby and District Billiards League Appeal
Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Ward Member for the Runtons, said “I am delighted that by working together members of the local community and the Council have been able to take action against those who fail to clean up after their animals. “Almost everyone loves dogs but not their mess, and this action sends a clear message to anyone
The Alby and District Billiards League was formed in 1932 and has been running continually except for the years during the 2nd World War.

At its peak, the League has consisted of 16 teams, ranging from Mundesley to Gt. Snoring. Sadly, the League has diminished considerably since then, with currently just four teams (Aylsham A & B, North Walsham and Gt. Snoring). Traditionally teams have consisted of six players but with the current state of affairs we have decided to allow teams to consist of between 3 and 6 players, teams with fewer than six players will have some players playing two games instead of one.
We are appealing for new players to consider joining the League, and maybe some old players to come back. Free coaching - tuition is available to anyone who is interested even if they have no knowledge of how to play billiards. Contact Ian Dennis on 01263 579748. Further information on the League can be found at www.albyleagues.co.uk
April
How I love the springtime The birds are in full song, They start as soon as dawn breaks And sing sweetly all day long. Raindrops glisten on the trees And every bright spring flower, The countryside is fresh and green After an April shower. The cold grey winter has now passed And the earth awakes once more, April showers and sunshine Have opened Nature’s door. Diane Berthelot

The business is popular with locals and holiday makers alike.
Growing family obligations have lead to a decrease in commitment to the shop so the need to sell before this has a knock on effect with my customers has become apparent.
The business overheads are very low and with a commitment to advertising and more frequent opening times than I can offer the profits could be largely increased. After three years Lune has steadily grown and changed with plenty of room for more growth into more popular retro clothing brands and styles, also a shoe section would really push the shop further.
For all genuine enquirers please contact Katie either in Lune, 22 Church Street, Cromer or via email at luneboutique@outlook.com

Big Society Award winners announced - Winners named at Sheringham Little Theatre ceremony Volunteers who have helped improve their communities were thanked publicly as they were named winners in the Big Society Awards during a ceremony at Sheringham Little Theatre last month. North Norfolk District Council organised the Big Society Awards to thank the people and the projects that help to create a strong community.
Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and Chairman of the Big Society Fund Panel, said “It has been a pleasure watching such deserving people come here tonight for recognition. The winners are of course hugely deserving, but so are the other finalists who may not have won, but should leave here full of pride at their efforts and achievements.”
Cllr John Lee, Chairman of North Norfolk District Council, acted as Master of Ceremonies at the event. He said “The purpose of the evening was to celebrate, recognise and honour a type of work that so often goes unseen and unrecognised – volunteering. We say thank you to some of those innovative projects, but especially those people, that help to build a strong community spirit in the area, all for no payment. We have heard stories of determination and hard graft; long term planning and dynamic working. We have also heard stories of heart rending effort in the most difficult and dangerous of circumstances.” • Outstanding Contribution by a Young Person to their Community : Abigail Bunn. Abigail has been nominated for this award as a tribute to her dedication to North Walsham Gymnastics Club and her desire to support the younger members. Abigail is an excellent coach, firm but fair and combined with her outstanding practical work is a real asset to the club. Abigail is looking forward to the club moving to their own dedicated premises later this year. • Outstanding Contribution by a Young Person to their Community : Holly Rumsby. Holly has been

His expert knowledge has helped the club achieve an award winning cricket pitch in 2015 & 2016, known for its outstanding playing surface throughout Norfolk. William is a constant source of encouragement to players of all ages, he is greatly respected by everyone he meets and is described as the spirit of Bradfield Cricket club. • Community Project 2017 : Erpingham Leisure Hub. Erpingham Leisure Hub has been nominated for this award for providing opportunities for all members of the community to participate in a variety of affordable and inclusive sporting activities. This enables the local community to enjoy the physical, mental and social benefits that participating in sport can achieve. • Voluntary Services to a Neighbourhood : Dennis Rolfe. Dennis has been nominated for this award for his voluntary services to the community of Itteringham. He has been involved with Itteringham Community Shop for over 20 years and is the longest serving volunteer on its Management Committee.
Dennis can be found most days of the week ensuring the shop is fully stocked, assembling weekly orders for the more vulnerable customers, helping teach new staff and volunteers the ropes and managing the animal and bird feed counter. • Outstanding Contribution to a Big Society Funded Project : Alexis Thurston. Alexis has been nominated for this award for her dedication to gymnastics in North Walsham through establishing the North Walsham Gymnastics Club for children aged 3 to 15 years. Alexis is the driving force behind the club, is a mentor for younger children, head coach and fund raiser. Her skills and expertise have helped gymnasts attending the club progress to become regional champions. Alexis dream is for the club to have their own bespoke gymnastic club, this will become reality when the club moves to its own building later this year. • Outstanding Act of Heroism : David Castleman. On 23 July 2016 at Sea Palling beach David responded to request for help as there were people who had got into difficulties in the sea. David did not hesitate before he plunged into the water and swam 50 metres to reach a man who was unconscious and towed him back to the beach where he regained consciousness and was airlifted to hospital. • Outstanding Act of Heroism: James Richardson and Aaron Spencer. On 19 August 2015 at Pinewood beach at Wells-next-the-sea. The life-saving duo were on a Scout summer activity trip when Aaron spotted a boy in inflatable dinghy having difficulty in getting back to shore. Aaron showed tremendous courage to swim over 100 metres to the boy, before towing him back to shore via the inflatable’s tether line. James then helped Aaron pull him to safety. • Those people who played such a large part in the 'before and after' of the January tidal surge were also thanked for their efforts.

Shameful lack of progress moving learning disabilities and autism care into the community - Norman Lamb
Norman Lamb MP is demanding urgent action to reduce the number of people with learning disabilities and autism stuck in big institutions, following serious concerns highlighted in the recent Channel 4 Dispatches documentary about the care given to people with these conditions.
‘Under Lock and Key’, which aired on Channel 4 earlier this month, revealed that thousands of people with severe learning disabilities and autism are still stuck in hospitals, despite promises to reduce the number of people in these settings. Experts have long called for people with these conditions to receive support from local, personalised care providers in the community, rather than big impersonal institutions, which reduce independence and harm recovery.
The programme also discovered serious concerns about the care in one of Britain’s largest mental health centres, St Andrew’s in Northampton, including heavy use of face-down restraint, seclusion, and anti-psychotic medication in both adults and children.
Fauzia Yasmin Hussain, who has autism and Tourette’s, was admitted to St Andrew’s at the age of 15. She was kept mostly in seclusion, in a room with very little natural daylight, and was given high doses of anti-psychotic drugs including intramuscular injection. After her family raised concerns about her care with Norman Lamb, who was then Care Minister, he visited St Andrew’s and was appalled at how she was being treated.
He said in the documentary “I went to St Andrew’s and saw Fauzia in her room, which in effect was a cell. A 15-year-old girl was being treated in effect
like a prisoner. It was one of the most shocking things that I’ve seen in my time in parliament. Just as a human being I was horrified.”
Mr Lamb initiated a review of her care, which ultimately led to her being discharged in September 2014 after almost two years in the institution. She now receives high-quality care at Alderwood Care Home in Colchester, coming home to visit her family once a month. Her condition and quality of life has improved dramatically.
Norman Lamb has now written to the Chief Executive of NHS England, Simon Stevens, to request a meeting to discuss care for people with learning disabilities and autism, along with Fauzia’s aunt, Dr Shahana Hussain, and Dulwich MP Helen Hayes, who also appeared in the programme.
Commenting, Norman Lamb said “It is shameful that there are still so many children, young people and adults with learning disabilities and autism who are stuck in institutions and treated as second class citizens. Submitting young people to face-down restraint, seclusion and sedation is unacceptable and has no place in our NHS. In my view, it is a significant abuse of human rights. I struggle to think of anything less therapeutic or more detrimental to good care and recovery. I was absolutely horrified by what I witnessed when I visited St Andrews. Fauzia was a young, vulnerable girl who was in care funded by the state and was being badly let down. She was being robbed of her dignity and independence. Fortunately, I was in a position to initiate a review which led to her discharge but there are too many people who are treated in this way. We set a new ambition to reduce
the number of people stuck in institutional settings by providing better support in the community. We also published a Green Paper before the election proposing new legal rights for people to challenge decisions about their care and to have more control over the resources available for their care. But progress has been far too slow and the Government has not legislated to give people these rights. I have asked for a meeting with Simon Stevens to discuss how we can end this scandalous situation.”

Norfolk’s Quintessentially and Sometimes Quirky Folk-Rock Festival Looks Back at its Roots
Cromer’s ‘Folk on the Pier’ festival will be celebrating its 19th outing on the second weekend of May this year, and looks set to be another fascinating mix of the acoustic, the electric and a fusion of other styles including Americana, singer song-writers, Celtic and often humour, all cemented together with the usual generous helping of folk-rock that underpins the event’s origins back in 1999.
Sunday night. However, perhaps rated as the grandest of all on ‘said scene’ at this time, the veritable ‘wall of sound’ AKA Feast of Fiddles will be shaking the rafters on the Friday night with their full on electric versions of traditional tunes, coupled with some mainstream repertoire including the occasional well-known film theme or two! Other repertoire not generally associated with the world of folk is also likely to feature, with Sunday afternoon headline act, The NewGrass Cutters, a popular acoustic Bluegrass act formed by Pete Brown, Joe Brown’s son, who are equally at home mixing Americana standards with mainstream items such as 80’s disco classics or even the more recent Maroon 5 hit, ‘Moves Like Jagger’!
It is now fairly well known that Fairport Convention’s first ever appearance at the Pavilion Theatre on Cromer Pier in 1998 was the inspiration behind ‘Folk on the Pier’. The band, regarded as the ‘Godfathers of English Folk-Rock’, returned the following year to headline the first festival and now, in 2017, are enjoying their 50th year in the business. Festival Patron and original founder of Continuing the eclectic theme the this iconic 60s group Ashley Hutchings festival is delighted to welcome MBE will help ‘Folk on the Pier’ back a solo performance from recognise this achievement. He will singer songwriter Sally Barker. present a very special project for the Saturday afternoon headline slot titled Festival Patron Ashley The former lead singer of the Poozies featured on the very first ‘Ashley Hutchings and friends celebrate Hutchings MBE festival billing, a powerful singer the beginnings of Fairport Convention who under the mentoring of Tom Jones was runon the Occasion of their 50th anniversary’; ner-up in the prime-time TV programme ‘The a performance that will be of interest to long Voice’ in 2014. Popular folk comedian Richard standing fans of the band and newcomers alike. Digance also The weekend will also feature other folk-rock returns this year having been enthusiastically heavyweights taking to the Pavilion’s stage adopted by the Cromer festival crowd over the including the recently formed, highly acclaimed last few years, as does American blues maestro TRAD.arrr, plus The Phil Beer Band who will Brooks Williams. Mike Silver who return to Cromer after a number of years. Coppin formerly of Decameron, is The NewGrass Cutters regarded as one of the leading songwriters in the UK.
With regard to younger faces on the 2017 bill, shanty singers the Longest Johns appear on Sunday night and rocking Welsh band Rusty Shackle will be making a first appearance along with Celtic fusionists the Roving Crows from the West Country. Essex band Mawkin, who have been a popular band at the event since 2004 make a welcome return, and other special features this year include the Eastern European sounds of Lebedek, plus a brand new project featuring master Irish percussionist ‘David ‘Hopi’ Hopkins with English duo Hazeyjane .
Festival producer Scott Butler is fiercely proud of the festival’s successful blend of musical styles, with its gamut of familiar and lesser-known instruments. Equally, he is proud of the team that take on the demanding challenge of turning around artists and equipment in a relatively small working environment at each of the six concerts over the three days. He is quick to point out that, although it’s great to be personally complimented on the programming for the festival, none of this could, or would, ever have happened over the years without the dedication of local and regional volunteer crews, both past and present, coupled with the ongoing technical wizardry of Rob Ellmore, regarded as one of the best world music sound engineers in the UK business. ‘No matter who you book into the idyllic acoustic of the Pavilion Theatre on the pier, if the PA and engineering is sub-standard you might as well all pack up and go home I am afraid’ says Scott. Folk on the Pier 2017 takes place Friday 5 to Sunday 7 May at the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer Pier, NR27 9HE. Box Office 01263 512495. Afternoon concerts £18 - evening concerts £20 weekend ticket for all six concerts £97.50. More information on daily programmes can be found at www.folkonthepier.co.uk

New Life for the carpets, upholstery and vinyl at the Salvation Army
It has been a wonderfully busy start to the year at New Life Cleaning Ltd. So many customers took advantage of our recent offer of ‘free underlay with every carpet order’, that we extended it into March.
Having continued to expand as a family based company, dedicated to achieving great results and personal customer service, we now carry out an array of different cleaning services for a broad spectrum of people and business’s, both local and further afield. A recent job carried out at the Sheringham Salvation Army embodies, very well, the wide range of Services we now provide.
We were kept very busy for a number of days by Sheringham Salvation Army cleaning carpets, vinyl, upholstery and carrying out carpet repairs. The three of us - Leonard, Matthew and I - cleaned the flooring throughout the 350m2+ building along with nearly 200 chairs in the auditorium, achieving fantastic results as you can see here below .....
Using our low moisture carpet cleaning system the carpets were given a new lease of life and the much loved and busy building was up and running again with minimal disruption. The upholstery hosted a number of different stains all of which were successfully tackled with our hot water extraction machine, which achieves optimum results with our detergent free and eco-friendly solutions. A job of this nature takes some planning and a willingness to work closely with your customer so you can meet their specific needs. It is great to be carrying out our services for such a key local ....Thomas Perrott organisation that does so much for the Sheringham community.

The North Norfolk Property Market
Can you afford to ignore it? By Richard Hewitt, Director, Hayes + Storr

Many now agree - 0.0%, or thereabouts, sitting in a bank is not at all "interesting", with demand strong for all types of property. Whilst we are threatened by City money skewing our market, there are plenty of opportunities being exploited by locals.
The banks A key to stress-free property investment is to minimise the need for bank finance. Banks can make life awkward and whilst interest rates may be low, upfront survey and arrangement fees are often not! Some clients achieve ‘bank free’ developments, where landowner, developer, contractor and purchaser share in the risk and reward all relying on the sale of the completed build, as the time to get paid.
The frenzy Currently, our local towns can resemble a gold rush with swathes of land promoted for valuable development – see Cromer, Holt, Fakenham and Swaffham for example – with plenty of companies and individuals understandably jumping on the bandwagon! Whether the frenzy makes sense in the long-term is debatable. Tensions are felt very locally, as important landscapes are threatened by "grand designs", and village tranquillity lost to the new outlying housing estate. However, it is certainly capable of making money for anyone involved.
Is it for you?
So, what about individuals thinking of bricks and mortar pension pots? One or two cautionary points; such purchases are relatively expensive with higher stamp duty and the cost of upgrading properties to make them fit to rent out. If you do need to borrow, whilst mortgages are widely available, including equity release and ‘buy to
let’ options, these are administratively time-consuming and complicated.
The Aim Find a well-built property. Avoid flats and apartments if possible as they involve monthly maintenance fees and restrictions on use. Such restrictions can prohibit some rental options.
The work All services and facilities must be checked and up-to-date. Please research your duties as a residential landlord. Take time to choose a decent tenant and visit your property regularly.
The taxman Once the rent is flooding in, do not forget the taxman!
Interested? If all the above seems daunting, perhaps it is not for you? But if that new build in your large garden or a cute Victorian terrace appeals to you, then why not?
What now? Contact the local agent, the savvy broker, the clever accountant or thorough insurance broker – or even your experienced local property solicitor! Tapping the knowledge held locally can be a good first step! Richard Hewitt is an experienced property solicitor based in Sheringham, who leads a small but expert team at Hayes + Storr, looking after clients throughout the area.
If you would like further advice on this matter please contact Richard on 01263 825959 or for advice on any other legal matter call our North Walsham office on 01692 503081 or email law@hayes-storr.com. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
He was therefore able to go straight to his new home after being vaccinated and now lives with the vet who treated him. What a lucky lad he is.
Although Daisy is still missing we have not given up hope that she will surface in time, so if you do see a timid black cat, new to your area, scavenging for food, please give us a call so that we can check to see if it is her and, if so, get her back into care. There is good news, however, of another little cat that recently went missing in North Walsham as she has now been reunited with her family. As Willow, the little cat concerned, had also only recently joined her family they were really worried as she did not know the area. They had made great efforts to get her back and, thankfully, their efforts have been rewarded. Cats can be lost for quite some time and, from our previous experiences, we know it can take months, and even years, for them to be reunited. Goods news for Manuka (now called Bertie), the little kitten mentioned last time, as his blood test was negative.
At this time of the year we start to receive many calls relating to kittens and thought it might be prudent to mention a couple of misconceptions people may have. Most people are surprised when advised that a female cat can get pregnant when she is Bertie, what a little honey! only 4 months old, which is not ideal Now safe in his new home from her point of view as she is still growing herself and could have problems when giving birth. We have also had instances where a cat will get pregnant again shortly after giving birth so, again, not fair on the cat. There was also a recent instance where someone contacted us for help under the special neutering campaign as her cat had kittens and the father was the mother cat’s brother. She was under the impression that this was not possible. Father, brother, son, any of these can father kittens if living in the same household and not neutered. If there is too much interbreeding, we have seen litters with health problems, which is another reason to get all cats neutered. If you have a cat and are worried about the cost of neutering, please contact our neutering line for a voucher, either one of the special £5 ones, which can be used at one of our vets, or a fixed price one, which can be used with any other vets. The neutering number and information is listed below. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. Find us on Facebook under Cats Protection North Walsham.

The Prince’s Countryside Fund is seeking inspirational rural projects for grant programme www.princescountrysidefund.org.uk. Deadline At a time of great uncertainty for farming and rural communities, The Prince’s Countryside Fund has opened for grant applications. With grants of up to £50,000 available per project totalling over £600,000, rural organisations and communities are being encouraged by the Fund to consider applying for funding to support their countryside projects.
Set up by HRH The Prince of Wales in 2010 the charity has now awarded grants to over 200 projects across the UK totally over £8 million. The grant programme tackles a wide range of rural issues including support and business advice for traditional farming families, career support and training opportunities for young people and support for communities to run vital community services. This March, applications are being particularly welcomed from community shops, pubs and innovative projects intended to alleviate rural isolation.
Clare Crookenden, Grant Manager, said “The Prince’s Countryside Fund is seeking applications from creative and inspirational projects right across the UK. We are keen to encourage more applicants from the East of England. I would encourage anyone thinking of applying to visit our website to find out more about our grant programme and read our eligibility guidance.”
The Fund has assisted a hugely diverse range of projects which range from providing
funding to assist young people travelling to work or apprenticeships in Norfolk, training opportunities in rural careers such as reed and sedge cutting and helping community groups to take ownership of, and run, local services.
Projects supported by the Fund fall into several key areas: • Providing training opportunities and apprenticeship schemes for those seeking a career in agriculture. • Providing support and advice to community shops to keep rural communities thriving. • Helping rural enterprises and farm businesses to become more economically viable. • Supporting farmers experiencing financial hardship and severe stress.
for applications is 5pm on Thursday 13 April 2017.
To find out more about the grant programme and read our eligibility and guidance document please visit www.princescountrysidefund.org.uk/ grant-giving-programme/grant-programme

Mini face-lift surgery rises in popularity
Cosmetic medicine and surgery goes through trends. First, we had skin only facelifts and then we had an era of deeply invasive tight ‘wind-tunnel’ look type facelifts. Now we are in an era of over-filling the face - although we do not do this at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic.
Whilst non-surgical options such as botox, fillers and lasers are very effective for early signs of facial ageing, they cannot tighten a lot of loose skin. A surgical face or neck-lift entails removing this excess skin. For natural looking results, we do not need to over-tighten the face and neck. We can just tighten it a little and add some volume with fillers of fat transfer and use lasers to improve the skin. Such combination yields superior results and is much better than too much of fillers or surgery alone.
Why awake face-lift? Many cosmetic surgery patients do not want to go under general anaesthesia. Being under general anaesthesia can be associated with risks. Nausea, vomiting, breathing problems and sluggishness for days afterwards can result. Those who have been there, say recovering from a general is like being hit by a truck. Operations under general anaesthesia also tend to have prolonged bruising and recovery involved.
How do you perform face-lifts at the Coltishall Clinic? With our technique, the operation is performed under local anaesthesia with an awake patient. Lidocaine numbs the area to provide pain control and this lasts for 12-18 hours afterwards - reducing the need for painkillers.
What types of facelifts do you offer at the Coltishall Clinic? Apart from a full range of non-surgical treatments, we offer a variety of surgical options mentioned below : • One stitch facelift- this is our minimally invasive facelift. It is suitable for younger patients or for those who do not want a full face or neck lift but desire a subtle result at low cost. • Laser face-lift - this is an excellent option when the main consideration is excess fat in chin and jowls. Laser can melt these and also heats the
surrounding tissue. This stimulates collagen formation and assists in skin and tissue tightening. The amount of tightening greatly depends on skin type, age, elasticity, general health and other factors. • Mini face and neck lift- we perform a tumescent facelift. It is also known by various other names such as weekend or mini-facelift, S-lift, MACS lift or a facial lipo-lift. Pre medication is recommended to relax the patient. A special local anaesthetic solution is injected in front of the ears. This solution numbs and gently lifts the skin from underlying structures. One side is operated at a time. A small amount of skin in front of and below the ear is removed. The skin is lifted, underlying layer is tightened and finally the skin is repositioned and closed with fine sutures. • 3-D facelift – this is a no knife facelift for patients who do not have lot of saggy skin but have lost volume from their face. We take fat from where patients don’t want it such as abdomen or thighs and transfer it to face where it provides a volumetric 3-D face-lift. • Neck lift only- this can be performed through a tiny 1-inch incision in the neck crease. This is suitable for patients with neckbands. Men with turkey neck in particular may be interested in neck only lift where it can be combined with removal of excess skin.
What are the benefits of Coltishall clinic face-lift procedure? Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS Medical Director at the Coltishall clinic has had advanced training in face and neck lifts in the USA and has adapted best practice and technological innovations. As the procedure is performed in the clinic purely under local anesthesia and not in a hospital, it offers the following advantages : • A natural look • Quick recovery • Minimal complication risk • Minimal scars • No hair loss • Less cost • Less risk of infection
With so many face and neck lift options on offer, along with a whole host of cutting edge non-surgical options, we are sure to have a solution to offer you. So why not give us a call on 0800 0430737 or log on to the website at www.coltishallclinic.co.uk.

An Easter Watercolour Exhibition by John Hurst
Sheringham resident and professional watercolourist, John Hurst is holding his annual exhibition of new paintings at Cley Marshes Visitors’ Centre from 5 - 18 April, 10am to 4pm daily.
John is well known for his observational studies of the Norfolk coast and this exhibition is no exception. By using strong colours, The Artist has created distance and atmosphere in the landscape, enabling the viewer to visualise being there at a Cromer Times 515 April 8th 2017
particular time of day and in specific light.
John’s exhibition will also feature copies of his acclaimed book ‘On My Way’, a book of twenty-five illustrated Norfolk coastal walks, ranging from Holme in the west to Winterton in the east, each supported by hand drawn maps, colour palettes, sketches and completed watercolours.
A humorous foreword has been written by John’s lifelong friend and patron, Sir Ian Botham, as The Artist was involved in Ian’s early Leukaemia

Looking for an alternative but equally egg-cellent gift this Easter? Sponsor a donkey!
Sponsoring a rescued donkey at Redwings Horse Sanctuary not only makes a special Easter gift for a friend or loved one, but will provide vital care for these lovable long-eared creatures for years to come.
Donkeys are a symbol of love and loyalty, especially at Easter when Christians honour the donkey for its humble service in carrying Jesus to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.
So what better time of year to extend your own hand of friendship and sponsor one of the Redwings’ beautiful Adoption Star donkeys?
A year’s sponsorship costs just £12.50, with the funds going towards the daily care of your chosen Adoption Star and their friends.
Redwings’ nine Adoption Star donkeys live across five visitor centres in Norfolk, Essex, Warwickshire
30
and Angus, and include stunning part-bred Poitou donkey Arya, cheeky Del Boy, super-sweet Esther and mischievous duo Wiggins and Wacko.
As well as receiving updates and photographs, your loved one can even meet and cuddle their new fluffy friend in person, for free, at every visitor centre. Adopters will also receive a special invite to their sponsored donkey’s birthday party making an adoption the perfect gift for any animal lover or those who have always wanted to a donkey of their own.
Gemma Walpole, Redwings’ Head of Fundraising, said: “These gorgeous creatures hold a special place in the heart of many at this time of year, making the gift of a Redwings adoption such a beautiful gift for Easter.
“It’s hard to believe that some of our adorable donkeys endured awful neglect, abandonment or
heart-breaking loneliness before finding a safe and loving new home at Redwings, but by sponsoring an Adoption Star donkey, you’ll be ensuring that your new four-legged friend will continue to enjoy a happy and healthy life at the Sanctuary.”

All change at Norwich City by Joel Lodge, our Football Correspondent
A lot has happened since my last article, as many City fans know Alex Neil has been sacked with most feeling it’s been a long time coming, myself included.
Delia and co have taken action and decided to sack Neil with 10 games of the Championship campaign remaining, the board have clearly taken notice and understand that there needs to be a massive overhaul at the club in terms of the squad as well as the structure of the club.
Ed Balls announced on the day of the Barnsley
game that instead of appointing a Chief Executive as they did with McNally and Moxey to instead split that role into two categories, a managing director and a sporting director.
We already know who the managing director is Steve Stone who’s former position at the club was director of finance and when Moxey departed in early February he was appointed interim Chief Executive; as for the sporting director however it appears that Huddersfield’s
Stuart Webber is the man for the Canaries board and it’s easy to see why.
Webber was the man who appointed the enigmatic David Wagner who has overseen the transformation in fortunes from laundering around the relegation zone to promotion hopefuls this season; if Webber can come to Norwich and see a similar turn around as a massive overhaul is needed then he could represent something of a coup for the Canaries.
Get into Golf with a course of lessons from just £20
Golf is a game for all, whatever your age, ability or time pressures and it is never too late to give it a try or to get back into it.
As well as the challenge and sense of achievement from learning a new skill, golf ticks many other boxes for health and wellbeing.
For more information or to sign up, please visit getintogolf.org/norfolk or contact Dominic at the Links on 01263 83 83 83.
The government recommendation is for at least 150 minutes of brisk walking a week. This equates to around 12 holes of golf. So walking briskly around the course is better for you and it means you can fit more golf into the time you have. Being outdoors can also provide a feel good factor and it boosts vitamin D levels. Vitamin D helps maintains strong bones and muscle function and keeps the immune system healthy.
There are social benefits too, both while on the course and in the friendly environment of the clubhouse. To play 9 holes at the Links Golf Club in West Runton costs from just £12.
The Links are running more Get into Golf courses this April and May. Each course consists of four 1 hour group lessons over four weeks and the cost for the whole course is just £20 per person.
The first course starts on Saturday 15th April – 09:00 to 10:00.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club Tales from the Bowling Green ...
At the end of September the next April seems a long way away. But hello here we are again looking forward to the beginning of yet another bowling season. The Cromer Marrams Bowls Club will open this year next weekend Saturday/Sunday 15/16 April. As is usual on opening days the Secretary, Treasurer and other committee members will be at the clubhouse 10am and 1pm to collect subscriptions. Cheque or cash welcome. Competition forms and free cups of coffee will also be available. The season runs through until 30 September. At the AGM Annual Subscriptions were increased to £65 but that figure includes entry to all club competitions. No additional rink fees are payable for ‘roll ups’, league or friendly games. We have quite a number of social members and their fee remains at £10.

Our President this year is Philip Edmonds. He is currently away in the Antipodes recharging his batteries for the
The green is looking in excellent condition thanks to the continuing hard work of Scottish Neil, Jackie, Bob and Phil in swishing the green regularly during the winter and cutting when required. In the last few weeks we have refilled the ditches and again it was Bob, Jackie, John the Birder and Tall Neil who did most of the work. The Club does most sincerely thank these members for looking after the green and its surrounds. During the winter we have continued to hold our quizzes on a regular basis and in general these have been well supported, but unfortunately there were a couple of evenings when the weather got the better of some participants. However the Wednesday afternoon short short mat bowls has gone from strength to strength. We are almost getting too many people coming to play that maybe the afternoon session will have to be extended. We thank John the Birder for all the time he puts into both these out of season extravaganzas. We are looking forward to welcoming some new members to the club to take part in Roll Ups, Friendlies and League games.
The green will continue to be open for two hourly sessions from 10am every morning – the best time for a ‘roll up’ – 2pm and 6pm every day, weather permitting, and members can bowl as often as they like. Friendly games are normally played in the afternoons and spectators are always welcome. New members Club and Friendlies are always welcome and even if you have not Captain Keith played the game previously, don’t worry, come Pantling and his along and have a chat with Club members Vice Captain Steve who will be quite happy to give you as much Bobbin are looking information as you wish. During the winter period I understand Phil was smarting after being beaten by a lady of 90 years of age in a pool game! At a karaoke session in the town amongst other offerings Scottish Neil rocked the bar with ‘One Night’, Stella provided the good voice with ‘My Life’ and Phil raised the tone with ‘Ernie the Fastest Milk Cart in the West’!
You are all reminded that the clubhouse and bar will continue to be open on Friday evenings. Members old and new can come for a ‘roll up’ to hone their skills, followed by a social get together in the clubhouse afterwards at very reasonable prices. Everyone, bowlers or not, welcome. Peter Bird

Neil Patrickson continues as our Captain in the Hansells League on Wednesday evenings ably supported by Vice-Captain Bob Allard. We continue to have a team in the County Federation Premier (West) Division and Neil Carswell will be looking to continue with his successful times as the ‘Crabs’ Captain. We have been promoted to Division One in the NANSA afternoon League. The competition will therefore be a bit stronger so are looking for good support from club members for the team in these afternoon games.
