The Crab & Lobster Festival is on its way! Nip along to north Norfolk
This May Cromer and Sheringham will host the eighth Crab & Lobster Festival with a host of seafaring fun for all the family. With numerous events, this year’s Festival offers plenty to do across the weekend.
The Festival will begin with an Opening Concert on Friday 19 May at Cromer Pavilion Theatre with a night of seaside fun, folk and comedy. Hosted by Olly Day and Nigel Boy Syer, the event will feature the Sheringham Shantymen and local dance group, Marlene’s School of Dance. It is set to be a night to really start the Festival in style. Mundesley Mammoth Beach Clean
The recent storms and sea surges have left parts of Mundesley beach thick with debris laced with polystyrene, broken plastic, and general rubbish (shoes, lino, pens, buckets, balls, water bottles). Some items may have come from the destroyed Cromer beach huts. In response to North Norfolk Beach Clean organiser, Shell Duddy’s call to arms, over 25 adults and children came to Mundesley last month - some locals, some from Dereham, some from Norwich.
In places, the debris is over 2 feet deep and riddled with tiny balls of polystyrene - most likely from discarded fish boxes. Paula and Martin Gray of the Beach Hut Cafe kept spirits high with donated refreshments and Mundesley Independent Lifeboat/Flood crew helped transport sacks.
After a few hours, the community spirited team collected 80 sacks weighing an estimated 1200kg. Whilst this is a mammoth achievement, it is sadly the tip of Mundesley’s polystyrene debris ‘iceberg’. Hence many more beach cleans will be needed to tackle the beach pollution behind the sea defences that stretch from Mundesley towards Trimingham. So please come along to Mundesley’s next Beach Clean on Sunday 7 May at 11am – meet at Vale Road.
Not only is it a great way to meet the neighbours, it is good exercise, improves the environment and is educational for the children who, not only learn about beach pollution but are mesmerised by the uncovered slow worms living on the shoreline.
Macmillan Fundraiser
Macmillan Cancer Support North Norfolk held a very successful fund raising event on Easter Saturday and raised £416.73. This money will be used locally. The winner of the lucky squares was Matt Wicks who won a year’s family pass for Pensthorpe Natural Park at Fakenham worth over £200! Our picture shows Matt along with daughter Daisy receiving the prize from Committee Chair Jo Haywood (on the right) and Secretary Diane Evans. Thank you to everyone who supported this fundraiser!

40acts ~ We didn’t give up, we gave out! Cromer Church did Lent generously this year and reached out to the wider community with simple acts of kindness.
Many of the parishioners from Cromer Church signed up for the ‘40acts’, a generosity challenge created by the charity Stewardship, which encouraged participants to do at least one different act of kindness each day of Lent. This year over a 100,000 people worldwide were on a 40-day mission to positively impact their local communities, notching up an estimated 2 million generous acts. As well as doing individual acts, Cromer Church organised a weekly ‘generous’ act to encourage their parishioners to stretch their faith, connect with their local communities and make a difference. The acts included packing bags at Morrisons, giving out free chocolate bars, encouraging shoppers to support their local foodbank, praying with people on the street, giving out free Easter eggs and just being available to listen to peoples’ stories.

The response from the general public was overwhelmingly positive and encouraging. They were genuinely touched by the simple acts of kindness and generosity. They loved the fact that the Church valued them and were willing to make a personal connection. After receiving a chocolate bar and a ‘because you’re loved’ note, one lady was inspired to donate some of her furniture to the local foodbank community store and a gentleman at the tennis club bought coffee for his friends.
The people of Cromer have also been extremely generous and willing to give. One ‘act’ at Morrisons collected the same amount of food donations in 4 hours that would normally take 2 weeks. One shopper bought a bag full of items to donate and said how much he valued the foodbank scheme as it really helped him when he was in crisis. He said, 'They are brilliant, so this is my act of generosity and a chance to give something back'. Cromer Church actively works in partnership with Morrisons to support this vital community initiative and seeks to combat poverty.

Simon Fenn, Head of Mission said "I’ve been particularly encouraged by the willingness of our church family to get involved and step out of their comfort zone. One volunteer said, ‘It was a bit challenging putting your faith on the line but the lovely responses from people made it worthwhile and rewarding’. Another commented, ‘It’s been brilliant and a bit scary, I’ve loved it! People have really appreciated the simple acts of kindness and knowing that they are valued’. The 40acts Challenge has had a positive impact on all involved and is an excellent initiative that enables us to develop stronger links with the wider community and demonstrate God’s love in practical ways. Next year, I’m keen to build on what we have started and get more people involved from both the church family and community.” Stewardship’s 40acts challenge has grown in popularity since the Christian charity first launched it in 2010.
Seven years on and millions of acts of generosity later, the challenge continues to astonish the team behind it.
Debbie Wright, Head of Content at Stewardship said “Every year more and more people choose to do Lent generously, and use generous acts to demonstrate their faith in the lead up to Easter. We never cease to be amazed at the creativity and kindness that we see, as people start to share their stories on social media. It’s great to see Cromer Parish Church taking up the challenge and making a generous difference to the community of North Norfolk.”

There is no author's name and no date of production but the book gives a page to every single man who was lost between 1914 and 1919. The book contains beautiful calligraphy and each man is given his date and place of birth and of death, the reason for his death, his regiment, the names of his parents and his career both military and civilian up to the time of his death. Tim said that it has been proved to be 95% correct, which is incredible.
He showed slides of Overstrand at the beginning of the war, with horse drawn carriages and Lord Battersea's Rolls parked ostentatiously! The picture of Overstrand's railway station was particularly poignant. As Tim pointed out, although they didn't know it, as the soldiers left the station on their long journey to the front, it would be the last view of their home village for many. Lady Battersea and Lady Hillingdon set up a convalescent home in the village and were very hands-on in its running. There are pictures of them in

YOU!
THE JUBILEE PLAYERS NEED Birthdays and anniversaries often mean different things to each of us. When you are young, birthdays are a real landmark and who can’t remember the importance of those additional fractions when, asked how old you are, you’re not just 6, but 6¾? Fast forward 60 years and ‘it’s only a number’ or we don’t bother at all.
So, what’s this all got to do with The Jubilee Players? Well, this year we have a significant anniversary. The ‘jubilee’ in our name gives a clue – we were formed in the same year that the Queen marked her Silver Jubilee, 1977, making us 40 years’ old this year.
It’s not unreasonable to assume that we’ve entertained upwards of 7,000 men, women and children in that time – whoever would have thought that many could fit into the Tithe Barn at Horstead? Our membership over the last 40 years has ebbed and flowed as people have come and gone, but there’s always a core number to keep the group ticking over.
Regular audience members know though, that for the first time in our history, we were unable to put on a pantomime this year because our numbers were not as plentiful as we like, or
Sunday Carvery 12noon±6.00pm only £9.95
Family friendly Sports Bar and Grill Hole in One @ Links -West Runton - 01263 838383 need, for such a major production. Nevertheless, we presented ‘Murder in Play’, a comedy drama, which played to sell-out audiences at every performance.
Our next play is in October, and is a farce called ‘Haywire’ by Eric Chappell. It’s got a
varied cast and we’d really love to open our auditions to some new faces – could that be you? We will have a read through of the play on Wednesday 5 July at 7.30pm, and auditions will be held at the Tithe Barn on Wednesday 19 July at 7.30pm. Equally, we’d like to recruit
new backstage crew members to work with our experienced members. Have you got what it takes to help backstage, or to shine the lights? Previous experience is not essential, just plenty of enthusiasm and willingness to muck in. Usually at this time of year, we’re busy rehearsing and it’s always difficult for anyone interested in joining us to pop in, as the actors are running through their lines and social chat is nigh on impossible. There is no summer production in June this year, but we’ll still be busy. During the forthcoming months, we are going to use our club nights to read plays and to socialise over a coffee.
If you’ve been thinking that you might like to have a go at amateur dramatics, either on stage or behind it, then come and join us on a Wednesday evening from 7.30 – we will be at the Tithe Barn for play readings on 10 and 24 May. For further dates and more information, call Ros Chamberlin on 01603 736287. Go on, try it; you never know – you could well be celebrating with us for our golden anniversary!
WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2017? 20 17 ?
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that Christmas can be a difffficult time for many people or resolutions are made to resolve issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2017 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY
At our meeting in April the speaker, Shelagh Ashe, gave members tips on ‘minding the gap’, in other words how to maintain interest in the garden at all times of the year. In what is the driest part of the country and one of the windiest – if you live in Cromer that is- this is not always easy.
One way to address this issue is to take into account the time factor. If time is at a premium then a low maintenance garden, which contains mostly trees, shrubs, grass and foliage of different colours, is the answer. This requires light pruning and grass cutting and not much else. Mixed borders containing trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs are not particularly low maintenance but will not be too much of a burden for keen gardeners. Herbaceous borders are the highest maintenance of all and it is here that gaps are likely to appear.
Advice was given on what to keep in mind. Plants that are there all the time provide structure and all year round interest. Evergreen perennials, topiary and what were referred to as ‘anchor’ plants such as lavatera ‘Barnsley’ and sambucus ‘Black Beauty’ were recommended. A good front row will hold its own all year. Some of the smaller geraniums, sedums, heucheras, hostas and bergenias are ideal. In the middle row linaria ‘Canon J Went’ and foxgloves are ideal if planted in long, narrow drifts. Taller plants at the back of the bed could include the foxglove tree and some of the taller grasses such as ‘Stipa Gigantea’.
Annuals sown in April/May such as cosmos, cleome, sweet peas and

the castor oil plant will fill gaps when plants such as annual poppies, Canterbury bells and forget-me-nots die down.
A major concern at the moment is the plight of bees and other pollinating insects and we hope to get some advice on what gardeners can do to help at our next meeting on 10 May at 7.30pm at the Community Hall in Cromer. Elaine Gibbs will be providing ‘A Buzz about Bees’. Visitors are always welcome. Cost £2.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
When we had our first Bingo Night last year, we received requests to “do it again please”. On 22 April it was, once again, “eyes down”, with barely a spare seat in the hall and additional tables added as more people arrived. It proved a very successful evening with £506 raised for the cats in care, with thanks to Rachel (helped by her husband and friends), for organising and running the event. Our next event is the Spring Sale on 6 May and we hope you will be able to join us there.
It is now nearly 17 years since the branch was formed and, during this time, advances have been made in cat welfare. While the cats are in care, they are held in cat pens, which are not their natural environment. Years ago (not at our branch), cats were confined in small cages, which must have been very stressful for them. During the time the branch has been running, Cats Protection has reviewed the size required and recently advised that, when our standard pens are replaced, they will need to be larger than the ones in situ.
Over the years, we have also seen changes in the quality and variety of food on offer for our feline friends. Special diets for cats with health problems and different foods available, depending on the cats age and weight, all help to keep our cats happy and healthy for much longer. This is also reflected in the veterinary care now available. In-house blood tests, x-rays, ultrasound and much more, are there to help the vets identify a problem and are now the norm. Veterinary care for small animals has come a long way from the days of James Herriot, and within most surgeries you will find vets with special Unit 2D Middlebrook Way, skills, be it surgery, dealing with feral cats, or Cromer identifying behavioural

problems etc. However, not to be outdone by the care offered by a local vet, there are also specialist centres where your cats can be seen by a cardiologist or dermatologist, to name just two. Some of you may have seen some of the amazing skills available nowadays if you enjoy watching the work of the “supervet” on TV. Our animals are very lucky nowadays with so much Pearl, a lovely friendly girl who would knowledge and help available to be happy to live with other cats and ensure they are kept happy and also dogs healthy. They do have one further advantage over us, as it is usually easier to get an appointment at the vets than one with your doctor! Cromer’s first 60s festival totally groovy, man Cllr Maggie Prior, Cabinet Member for Culture said “There was a super turn out and a fantastic mood at the event. People were having a really good time - dancing kept breaking out near the bands and singers, some of this was as early as 10.30am!
More than 3,000 people throng to new event showcasing sights and sounds of the 1960s Cromer’s 60s Festival drew big crowds last month to North Norfolk’s iconic Cromer Pier.
“The success of Cromer’s 60s event really shows there’s an appetite for something new and fun along the North Norfolk Coast to add to the already superb calendar of events in our area. We are definitely going to look into whether this can become a yearly event.”
The St George’s Day celebration organised by North Norfolk District Council welcomed in excess of 3,000 visitors over the course of the day. Many came on vintage scooters and motorcycles and even more got into the spirit of the 1960s by dressing in period clothing.

“This 60s-tailored event could be the traditional season opener, and would put Cromer well and truly on the map. Thank you to the supporting teams that ensured the success of my original idea Photos: Dave Hubba Roberts

Varicose and Thread Veins Changing options for the treatment of unwanted veins. Days of open surgery, prolonged bruising and painful recovery are long gone. How can a beam of light replace a surgeon’s knife? Is this too good to be true? Not anymore- Non-invasive methods are replacing surgery at a very fast rate. So much so that NICE -The National Institute of Clinical Excellence has updated it’s guidelines on the treatment of varicose veins. It has recommended Endovenous laser treatment as the preferred option, foam injections second and surgery where the first two options are not suitable or declined. So come and see us to help you get rid of those unwanted veins anywhere on your face or body.
Safe and effective Laser Hair Removal and Tattoo removal for all skin types. Why it is a great idea to see us. When it comes to laser hair and tattoo removal, it is the wild west in this country. There is no shortage of new places opening up at every corner. We are seeing increasing number of patients who are either dissatisfied, or have been harmed because of poorly trained and unregulated providers and cheap copycat or downright dangerous and unapproved machines.
As we all know, one size does not fit all. There is simply no machine, which is suitable for every person’s needs. With this in mind, we have invested heavily in modern high-end medical machines that have undergone rigorous testing and evaluation. All our therapists also undergo rigorous initial and on going training in laser safety.
We have helped thousands of patients remove unwanted hair, ingrowing hair and rashes, pseudofolliculitis barbae (razor bumps) and even helped patients with poly-cystic ovaries.

Summer concert premieres specially-written work
On Saturday 17 June at 7.30pm North Norfolk Chorale will present its summer concert at Salle Church.
The programme will include a new setting of ‘Proficiscere Anima Christiana’ by local composer Charles Damsan. Using words from Cardinal Newman’s famous poem ‘The Dream of Gerontius’ this new setting is for organ, oboe and chorus. The piece has been specifically composed to take advantage of the superb acoustics of Salle Church, and will feature oboe soloist Willow Swiatek, with William Falconer playing the organ.
Under the leadership of the Chorale’s Musical Director Jonathan Dodd, the remainder of the programme will consist of carefully selected music designed to make the most of the acoustics in this building, which has frequently been used for professional recordings.
It will start with Henryk Górecki’s beautiful ‘Totus Tuus’. Originally composed to celebrate Pope John Paul II’s 1987 pilgrimage to his native
Poland, this work for unaccompanied voices has become a contemporary classic. Willow Swiatek and her oboe will also appear in Arvo Pärt’s ‘Spiegel im Spiegel’ (‘Mirror in the mirror’).
In the second half of the programme, the Chorale will sing the Duruflé Requiem. The work is influenced by plainchant and again has been chosen to complement the acoustics of the church.
Jonathan Dodd said “we are incredibly lucky to be able to use this wonderful venue, and we are looking forward to presenting a programme which is going to sound utterly captivating there. Some of the music may be new to you – but do come and listen. You might just come away with a new favourite!”
Tickets can be purchased (including early booking discount) at £13 each online at north-norfolk-chorale.co.uk, or by calling 01692 405591. Online bookings will attract a small booking fee. Tickets may also be purchased on the door at the full price of £15.

Leaving hospital - a national obsession By Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr
We have all seen headlines such as ‘NHS in Crisis!’. There are not enough hospital beds to cope with demand, people are left on trolleys in corridors and ambulances queue round the block. At the other end of the system, people ready to leave hospital, but not well enough to

go home, have nowhere to go and so ‘bedblocking’ results, with some desperate cases.
As a preventative measure, and well before any crisis occurs, I would encourage people to make a Lasting Power of Attorney - Health and Personal Welfare (LPA). At least that way, trusted family members or friends have fullyrecognised legal authority to speak on your behalf, in the event of mental incapacity.
But what about those who are vulnerable but have mental capacity or those who lack capacity but have no LPA?
Families need to know their rights. First, before discharge, a social-needs assessment should be done, particularly if the person is elderly or vulnerable, to establish their needs and how they can be met. Ideally, at least one family member (or trusted friend) should be present to assist at the assessment. A copy of the assessment should be supplied. Often hospital staff (even including doctors) are unaware that Local Authority Social Services should be involved in the discharge process. This is so even if the person is ‘self-funding’ (i.e. they have enough money to pay for their own care); in that case Social Services still have a duty to assist in putting a care plan in place.
If a care home is recommended, what type should this be: residential or nursing? What if there are mental health issues?
If a nursing home is considered best, a preliminary assessment for Continuing Health Care (CHC) should be carried out, with a family member present. If a person is eligible for CHC, the NHS pays for all care and accommodation: sadly, this is rarely awarded.
Discharge should never take place without all the appropriate assessments and the
20
correct procedures being adopted. Representation by a specialist solicitor enables the person’s rights to be upheld.
If CHC is not awarded, then addressing how the cost of care is to be funded is the next step. If the person has been ‘sectioned’ under the Mental Health Act, this sounds worrying, but an advantage is that it ensures eligibility for NHS ‘aftercare funding’. Taking legal advice at this stage helps to ensure that the correct procedures are followed by the local and health authorities.
Sometimes there is a dispute about where a person should live on their discharge from hospital. This is so not just if a person does not have mental capacity, but also if the local or health authority will not fund the preferred care home, or will not fund a return home with in-home care. Can someone insist on returning home with in-home care, if it costs the local authority more than a care home? Does the question funding take precedence over the autonomy given to individuals under the Care Act?
Leaving hospital is rarely easy, especially for the elderly and vulnerable. Special care is needed to make sure they have both the right medical care and also the right legal advice and care.

North Norfolk District boundary review recommendations published
lovely things,
sold by lovely staff, to lovely people.
The Local Government Boundary Commission for England has published its final recommendations for new electoral arrangements for North Norfolk.
The proposals are for North Norfolk to be represented by 40 district councillors in future, a decrease of eight.
The final recommendations propose that North Norfolk’s 40 councillors should represent eight two-councillor wards and 24 single-councillor wards across the district, from a present total of 14 two-member and 20 single-member wards. Overall this is a decrease in ward number from 34 to 32.
Changes to the boundaries of 29 wards are also recommended, with three wards (Briston, Poppyland and The Raynhams) remaining the same.
North Norfolk District Council Corporate Director and Head of Paid Service Steve Blatch said “We welcome these recommendations from the LGBCE. The new proposal for North Norfolk’s ward boundaries and members reflects the way our district has changed over the years and will ensure equality of representation for voters, as well as the increased ability to reflect ward issues and identities, and ensure fair workloads for our councillors.”
The report was released last month after the Commission reviewed information gathered via a district-wide consultation that ran from 6 December 2016 through to Monday 30 January 2017. The review was carried out to ensure wards in North Norfolk are in the best possible places to help the Council carry out its responsibilities effectively and to ensure the number of voters represented by each

councillor is approximately the same across the district.
A spokesperson for the LGBCE said “We are extremely grateful to the people of North Norfolk who took the time and effort to send us their views. The Commission considered every piece of evidence it received before finalising these recommendations.”
Any changes recommended by the LGBCE are subject to approval by Parliament and would come into effect at the next district council election in May 2019.
The recommendations cannot affect the external boundaries of the district or result in changes to postcodes.
The LGBCE is a national body - it undertakes periodic reviews of local government ward boundaries. The current review is based on population growth and significant variance in electoral equality across different parts of our district.

Cromer RNLI Launched to Assist Fishing Boat
Cromer lifeboat crew launched on the morning of 12 April after the lone crew member aboard a fishing vessel called the UK Coastguard to report they had suffered engine problems.
A local fishing boat the Rory James requested the launch of RNLI Cromer’s all weather lifeboat ‘Lester’. With only one member of crew on board the fishing boat, with a moderate sea and winds blowing at force 3 in a westerly direction, help was needed.
Soon Cromer’s lifeboat was heading the three and a half miles off Trimingham to give support and advice on returning to Cromer.
John Davies, RNLI Coxswain for Cromer’s RNLI Lifeboat, said ‘Being a local fisherman and knowing others who fish in local waters, I was pleased to be able to respond so quickly on behalf of the RNLI’
By 12.25pm, ‘Lester’ had returned to the main boathouse and was made ready for its next launch.
Cromer WI
The meeting began with our speaker Sue Perry and her talk on the victims of Jack the Ripper.
Sue spoke of the five officially recognised women who were killed between August and November 1888. They were Mary Ann (Polly) Nichols aged 43, Annie Chapman aged 47, Elizabeth Stride aged 45, Catherine Eddows aged 46 and Mary Jane Kelly aged 25. All these women were involved with drink and prostitution and some had broken marriages and some had spent time in the Work House. Sue explained how these women depicted the seedier side of London’s East end and photographs were shown of the area. Jack the Ripper was never caught and many other killings have been linked to his name but never substantiated, hence the curiosity of this story still remains. We all needed our tea after that.
Plans are in the pipeline for a Strawberry Tea and a picnic on the beach during the summer. Some members will be going to our Federation Garden Party at Mannington Hall. New clubs are now up and running for Sewing, Walking and Reading. The competition of an item beginning with N was won by Freddie Abbs, with Judy Roberts second and Anita Jacobs third.
There is no speaker next month as we will be voting on our National Resolutions. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

Tales from the Bowling Green ...
... My word it has been a bit breezy on that there bowling green since we opened. It has been good to see members having a ‘roll up’ even though warm jackets were being worn. All have been really delighted that the green has played as well it has looked. With Neil and Phil cutting the green it looks a picture. I am hoping that in the second week it will be some degrees warmer – we shall see. The first Spoon Drive of the season was well supported by members plus a visitor, Keith, and saw all 6 rinks in action. The winner with the best shot score was Club Captain Keith, now how did he organise that? Runner Up was one of our new members Roger O’Leary and the member with the
I also understand that when Bernice was clearing up in her garden she was frightened by a toad jumping out of a drain from under some leaves. Some members in the bar were discussing the merits of cookers. Philip said he keeps some beer bottles in his!
