Guides Help Keep Our Beaches Clean
Members of 2nd Sheringham and 1st Suffield Park Guides spent one of their weekly meetings doing a beach clean.

Guides Help Keep Our Beaches Clean
34-40 Station road, Sheringham 01263 823258 blythwright@btconnect.com www.blythandwright.co.uk
Continued from front cover... Unit leader Helen West had seen coverage in the local press about the local 2 minute beach clean and was inspired to support the Guides to participate, helping to make our beaches safer for everyone to enjoy spending time on.
The Guides enjoyed completing this community action element of their programme and hope that their efforts made a difference.
Both Guide units, which meet weekly during term time, have an extremely varied and exciting programme of activities usually designed around ideas from the Guides themselves. They are more than happy to welcome any new members, girls aged 10-14. Free taster sessions can be arranged for anyone who may be interested. The Magnard Trio
This unusual ensemble of oboe, bassoon and piano created pleasing and interesting sounds, playing music by Peter Hope, Marina Dranishnikova, Melissa Douglas, Alezandre Tansman, Brahms, Britten and Poulenc.
The artists were Catriona McDermid (Bassoon), Mana Shibata (Oboe) and Sulin King (Piano). All three studied at either the Royal Colleges and Academies, Guildhall School of Music and Purcell School, and have been awarded numerous prizes and performed at prestigious venues with top orchestras and ensembles.
On this occasion at Templewood, these young performers displayed the outcome of such studies from our leading music establishments, and the experience gained by playing with such well known orchestras brought to Northrepps a concert of music, again upholding the standard one can expect from performers invited to play at this now well established venue.
All the works performed were of the romantic style, mostly unknown to, I assume, the audience. Nevertheless, it is good sometimes to explore and listen to the unknown!
The piano accompanist to most of the works required a masterly technique, music-ship and sensitivity – all of which Sulin King had in abundance and without having a page turner at that! Terry Keeler

Next month sees some of the two great events of the year, the Steam Day on 11 June and the Jazz evening on 24 June. Added into this is free entry to all accompanied fathers on 18 June for Father’s Day.
The Steam Day focuses on everything steam from engines and vehicles to our lovely Victorian steam launch! Maybe it is a nostalgic thing, but what’s not to love about the smell of steam and the fascinating old engineering which formed the basis of the Industrial Revolution?
an evening of it?
The Jazz evening is a great evening. We are delighted that Savoir Faire’s sublime jazz will again be floating across our beautiful riverside location and Tipple’s Brewery will be running a beer tent too. Personally, I hope that the lady with the three tier cake stand will be there! Why not bring a picnic and make

Council plans big Splash for Sheringham
Sports centre could be demolished, rebuilt and improved in exciting new plan
North Norfolk’s biggest sports and swimming centre could be knocked down and rebuilt as part of an ambitious project to improve leisure provision in the District.
North Norfolk District Council’s preferred option for the future of Splash in Sheringham is to demolish the ageing building and construct an improved swimming pool, gym and associated facilities.
The Council has taken an imaginative approach to the project in consultation with strategic property partners Gleeds. The proposed plan, which is in early discussion stages, could see an £8m facility built by using a combination of long term loans, Sport England funding and income from additional development on land next to Splash. This development could include a hotel and/or retail/commercial units.
Initial details of the proposed plan were made public in papers to the Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee, which was due to meet on 17 May. The papers will also discuss the early stages of the procurement process for the Council’s leisure contract which is due for renewal by 31 March 2019, covering Fakenham Sports and Fitness, Splash Leisure and Fitness in Sheringham, and Victory Swim and Fitness Centre in North Walsham. The three Council-owned leisure centres are all very successful, with visits in 2016/17 totalling 462,000 and this has continually risen over the past four years.
Among the recommendations, which will then be put to the Council’s Cabinet in June, will be that a feasibility study around the property and leisure issues is now progressed with a further report coming to Cabinet later in 2017, to then approve the business case for construction of a new facility at the Splash site in Sheringham.
Other options include a full refurbishment of the current Splash building, although the papers make it clear that demolition and rebuild would be more cost effective because of the need to completely modernise the Council’s sport and leisure offer at the Sheringham site. This would not be achieved in the current building, which is environmentally inefficient, and would prevent the opportunity for the new leisure contract to provide the necessary savings to help fund the new facility.
The plans have been designed to guarantee ongoing provision of the popular skateboard, football and cricket facilities on the current and adjacent sites.
Cllr Judy Oliver, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Property, said “This is a highly imaginative and inspirational plan which has the potential to secure a long term future for Splash. We have great aspirations for leisure services across North Norfolk and the opportunity to build a modern, efficient and fit for purpose facility in one of our premier coastal towns is very exciting. “I welcome this plan wholeheartedly and welcome the input we have had from Sport England.”
Cllr Maggie Prior, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, said “The range of leisure opportunities across North Norfolk makes a significant contribution to improving the health and wellbeing of our residents. We want to improve Splash and give it a long term, viable future. It already attracts 160,000 visits a year and I believe that an improved facility would see this number increase, benefiting both our residents and the tourism economy, which is so crucial to this part of the world.”
Cllr Doug Smith, North Norfolk District Council member for Sheringham North, said “This plan will be a huge win win for Sheringham's residents and visitors, we will work hard to make this a real success.” The full report can be found here: www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/media/3212/ overview-scrutiny-agenda-17-may-2017.pdf Cromer Times 518 May 20th 2017

Haddock Benedict
This month's recipe is provided by Joe Stacey, demi-chef de partie at the Dales. It includes a bonus recipe for English Muffin. Try it and see what you think! Ingredients 1 block of butter 4 egg yolk 1tsp white wine vinegar 2 haddock fillets
Handful of spinach 2x eggs 1x half of savoury muffin
Method To make your hollandaise 1. Firstly melt the block of butter so the butter and milk separate and pour of the butter. This clarifies the butter. 2. Secondly prepare a bain marie of hot water. Take 4 eggs and separate the yolks and put into a mixing bowl. 3. Add a tsp of white wine vinegar to the yolks and mix together. Then place the bowl above the bain marie. 4. Next is the tricky and very important part. Very slowly and gently pour the butter into the yolk and vinegar ixture and mix vigorously until it starts to form a creamy consistency. Lastly, season to taste. 5. This is now ready to serve. Prepare this before
starting the rest of the dish.
1. Prepare a shallow pan of milk. This is to poach your haddock fillet. Bring this to a simmer. 2. Next, boil a pan of water to poach your eggs. When the milk is simmering place the haddock in the milk to poach. 3. When the haddock is nearly cooked, Bring the pan of water to a simmer and crack your eggs in to poach. While the eggs and fish are cooking, pre- heat a frying pan. 4. When the pan is hot, place a knob of butter in the pan and wilt the spinach with a little bit of seasoning. When the spinach is wilted, place onto a doubled up sheet of kitchen towel to drain excess oil. 5. Remove the eggs and the haddock from both the water and milk when cooked and also place on doubled up kitchen towel to drain excess liquid. 6. To plate, place half of one of your homemade muffins on a plate then top with your wilted spinach. On top of this place the poached haddock then the poached eggs on top. Finish with a generous helping of hollandaise over the top of the dish. Alternately to homemade muffins, you can buy English muffins and just toast before serving.
English Muffin
Ingredients (Makes 8) 150g strong white bread flour plus extra for flouring 6g fast-action yeast 6g salt 15g caster sugar 15g softened butter, cut into small pieces 1 medium free-range egg lightly beaten 170ml oz milk Oil for greasing 15g semolina or polenta, extra for dusting
Method 01263 824555 1. Firstly tip the flour into a mixing bowl. Sprinkle the yeast on one side of the flour and 01263 838383 the salt into the other side of the flour. Add the sugar, butter, egg and milk, then mix all the 01263 579579 ingredients together to form a soft dough. 2. Next move the mixture onto a lightly floured surface and then knead for 10 minutes or until soft and stretchy. 3. Now lightly grease a large with your oil and the place the dough in the bow. Cover this and leave to prove for an hour or until the dough has doubled in size. 4. Dust your work surface with a mixture of semolina/ polenta and flour. 5. Tip the dough onto the work surface and roll till it is roughly 2.5cm thick. 6. Lightly dust two baking trays with half of the semolina or polenta. 7. Using a 9cm/ 3 ½ oz straight sided cutter, cut out eight muffin. Place four muffins, evenly spaced apart on each of the dusted baking trays. Dust the remaining semolina or polenta over the top of the muffins. 8. Leave to prove for another 30 minutes. 9. Preheat the hot plate or a heavy-based frying pan on the hob to a very low heat. Griddle the muffins for approximately 5-6 minutes, then flip over and griddle for another 5-6 minutes on the other side. This is a staple on our breakfast menus which is a luxurious way to start the day. Also a lovely alternative to have at dinner time.

The Weekend by Michael Palin
The Weekend is a superb comedy play written by prolific writer/actor Michael Palin, renowned as a member of the legendary Monty Python team, and more recently in his BBC TV travel/history documentaries. Michael Palin has very kindly sent his ‘good wishes’ to The Sheringham Players.
Written in 1994, the play was first staged at the Strand Theatre in London’s West End. The role of Stephen Febble was played by Richard Wilson, known for his role as Victor Meldrew of One Foot in the Grave fame. Richard Wilson has kindly sent ‘good wishes’ for the play.
RAF LANGHAM DOME HERITAGE DAY Saturday 3rd June 2017
Come and join us at our Dome Heritage Day any time from 11am to 4pm on Saturday 3 June 2017. Help us celebrate three successful years as North Norfolk’s iconic and newest military visitor attraction which tells the story of RAF Langham as a WW2 Coastal Command unit and the technology for the ground to air weapons anti-aircraft gunnery training facility based here in WW2 and the Cold War. The post code for the Dome for your Sat Nav is NR25 7BP. Amongst the attractions at our Heritage Day there will be: • A flypast by the BBMF Dakota and a Tiger Moth Aerobatic Display (weather dependent) • Stiffkey Rescue Wooden Boats
• A Gipsy Moth Aircraft on Static Display • 1940s songs by Tara and the Blighty Belles
• Exhibits from the Royal British Legion, RAF Radar Museum Neatishead, • Norwich & District Aviation Group and the Air Cadets • Military Vehicle display • A genuine 1940s NAAFI Wagon • The Langham Village BBQ • Licensed Bar • A prize for the best 1940s dressed attendee • A Grand Draw with a 90 minute Boeing 737 simulator experience as first prize based on the Sim2Do simulator at Mildenhall - tickets just £1.00 each The event will be opened by Air Marshal Sir Christopher Harper KBE Parking and entry are free, but donations are requested. A donation of £5.00 or more will provide a ticket for complimentary entry to the Dome Visitor Centre with its interactive displays suitable for both adults and children, historical films, WW2 exhibits, shop, etc.
Set in Suffolk, present day and centres around the cantankerous, world-weary and generally ‘crabby’ – this describes Stephen Febble (played by Graham Blyth). All he wants is a quiet life but, to his horror, his long-suffering wife Virginia (played by Ruth Elliott) fills the house with guests for the weekend ‌ his daughter, gormless son-in-law, precocious granddaughter and incontinent dog, together with his best friend, his wife and her chiropodist lover all turn up for dinner. Exasperated, frustrated and irritated, Stephen responds in his normal fashion, reaching for the whisky, in large amounts, and the sarcasm, in even larger amounts.
Michael Palin has given lots to laugh at. It is a play with a thread of black as well as light humour, with surprising revelations. If you want straight comedic entertainment, it’s there, but with a poignancy that gives the script much depth - this play is unmissable! Brilliantly directed by Greg Pope for The Sheringham Players 2017 Summer Production.

What to do when life gets boring By Beckie Grimmer from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners I’ve had plenty of hobbies in the past and, like so many people, have lost interest in pursuing them, be it because I got frustrated practicing it over and over, found something else that I was more engrossed in, or even that I was worried about what other people would think of my hobby. Was it cool? Did I look silly doing it? Were other people going to treat me differently because of it? We’re all guilty of disparaging somebody’s hobby because we think it’s weird or the person isn’t cool enough to do it. Just look at TV shows like The Big Bang Theory, whose comedy consistently depends on the idea that people who are passionate about science, trains or comic books aren’t to be taken seriously (thankfully their fantastic script and characters also helps us see otherwise).
Maintaining a fervour for learning is a truly difficult thing. Not only must you try to ignore those who make fun of you, but you need to feel like you are smart enough to learn in the first place when you might have previously been made to feel otherwise. Nobody has a set ‘level’ of intelligence, despite how we may have been made to feel in education when we were separated into our bands of the ‘bottom set’ or the ‘smart class’ - yuck! Also, not everybody has to learn at the same speed, or be good at the same things. You don’t even have to be good at something to want to learn it! I think that we should make a pact with ourselves to try and stop putting down other people who get

excited over their interests. Sure, the girl wearing a Justin Bieber t-shirt eagerly trying to win tickets to his show might seem like she should care about ‘more important’ things, or the people who race around on tiny BMX bikes might look like they’re trouble makers to you, but are they actually doing you any harm? Do you need to make them feel like their obsession isn’t worthwhile, who does that actually benefit? And if you witness anybody else doing it, genuinely ask them why they feel such a prejudice against it? We all have misconceptions, and not only is it okay to be wrong sometimes, but learning more can open up a whole lot of compassion and intrigue for something you might never have considered before. Now if you don’t think you have any interests at all, or if you have an interest but it seems like there’s too much of a barrier to pursuing it, my advice is short and simple. Get curious. Anything can be remarkable when you continually question it. I find myself trying to identify lichens growing on walls in the middle of town, or marvelling at ferns that have established themselves underneath a leaking drainpipe. It can make trips a bit slower when I stop to look at things all the time, and I recently discovered the endearing term ‘walking at the speed of botany’, but it keeps me caring about what’s around me.
My questions drive my articles and learning. I’ve researched the methods Wiccans and Pagans use plants in magic, the reasoning behind botanical names, how to make gardening more accessible to the disabled and elderly, and how plants can survive
underwater. I have quickly accumulated a plethora of books, with my wish-list ever expanding into the realms of: Paleobotany - Fossil plants Psychoactive plants - Plants that alter brain function Forensic Botany - The use of plants in criminal investigations Women in Horticulture – What have been/are their barriers? What are their successes? Marine Botany - Plants and algae that live in the sea Plant Consciousness - Are plants intelligent? Can they remember? Feel pain? Communicate? React to change? I’m just inescapably captivated by the broad and fascinating industry of horticulture.
The best method I’ve found to figure out if you’re interested in a subject is to seek out people who absolutely love it. They will be able to tell you loud and clear all of the reasons why their subject is so great and then you can decide for yourself. And even better, you don’t have to limit yourself to just one subject, ask around! A hobby or interest can quickly sweep you into a career path if you let it. Some people were quick to tell me that gardening was ‘just a hobby’ when I considered studying it, and for a while I believed them, but you’re going to be much better at a job, and live a much more fulfilling life, when you’re driven by curiosity. I’m plenty aware that horticulture is often not regarded as interesting or skilled, and I know there are countless people that could help convince you otherwise, myself included! So go on, give curiosity a try.

The President welcomed one new member which has brought our membership up to 60. There was no speaker this time as it was our Resolution Meeting. The topics we discussed were ‘Alleviating Loneliness’ and ‘Plastic Soup – keep micro plastic fibres out of our oceans’.
After Pru Mead put forward for the case of loneliness and Glenice Knight speaking about Plastic Soup a vote was taken and it was unanimously agreed that both resolutions were accepted and the result taken forward to our Annual Meeting in June in Liverpool. If this is accepted countrywide then the National WI will lobby government to do something about these subjects.
Members who took part in the Centenary Salver, which is a craft competition, had their exhibit on display, showing a scene from Beatrix Potter. Ours was Jemima Puddleduck surrounded by sugar craft eggs, bread rolls and chutney and a display of spring flowers.
There was a report from six members who recently went on a WI Holiday to Plymouth and enjoyed visits to the Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligon. While at the Eden project Glenice Knight, very bravely, had a go on the zip wire which flies across the complex.
Our competition for an item beginning with the letter O was won by Moira Harding with Doreen Amey second and Freddy Abbs third. Our speaker for June is Roger Jones from the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.
New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street but please note that our June meeting will be on Thursday 15 June as the hall will be used for voting on our normal day.
Cromer Flower Club
At our April meeting we enjoyed a talk by Anne Bridge on the history of flower sellers.
We started with Flora, the Roman God of Flowers, through the first mention of a florist in 1630 from Norwich, to the present day supermarkets and more personal touches from independent flower shops.
Best in Show in our monthly competition entitled ‘A Basket Arrangement’ was Jenny Payne with a sweet arrangement of gerberas and glossy foliage.

Amid the sea of yellow Which covers the springtime meadow There's buttercups and primroses And celandines on show. One flower is always overlooked Its profligacy dims its beauty, Resilience is its watchword Its flower's a real cutie. The dandelion responds each day To the warmth of the risen sun, Splaying open its ligulate petals Then closing when day is done.
At evening when the sun sinks west The flower's like a paintbrush dipped in butter, Bees and butterflies look in awe As round it they buzz and flutter. How could folk call this plant a weed When it has so many uses, The leaves can be used in salads and wine Warts cured by its latex juices. Cut the root of this versatile plant And use it in cordials and beers, It's caffeine free, so let’s raise a glass “To the dandelion, three cheers.”

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club
‘Listen With Mother’, a short radio programme aimed at the very young, may have vanished from the airwaves long ago but for David Clayton, our Speaker at the Probus Club Lunch on Tuesday 2 May, it was a critical point in what became a lifelong career in broadcasting.
Long before television made inroads into every household, radio provided the main external contact with music, drama and news, and the wireless was a focal point for most families.
David graduated from ‘Listen With Mother’ to become hooked as a teenager on the music provided by the BBC, but this organisation was restricted in the amount of ‘needle time’ it was allowed for popular music so that most ‘pop’ music was played by bands and orchestras instead of the real thing - frustrating for the keen teenage listener!
As a consequence of this restriction a number of offshore pirate radio stations became established avoiding immediate government control. Radio Caroline was among them and found in David, and many million others, a ready listener.
Following a spell as a much sought after DJ, David joined the BBC who introduced local radio, including Radio Norfolk. Over the years David Clayton became part of the backbone of Radio Norfolk, recently retiring as its Head of Broadcasting, and well known to listeners as the presenter of Treasure Quest on Sunday mornings. His talk, full of amusing anecdotes, was a breath of fresh air and greatly appreciated by the large gathering of members, wives and guests, and a warm and well deserved vote of thanks was given by Ken Macnish.
Our next meeting on Tuesday 6 June at The Links Hotel, West Runton, will be the Annual General Meeting following our usual lunch.
If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or business man and would like to join us at any of our future meetings you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our Lunch Secretary, Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or have a look at our website candsprobus.club for more information.

On Tuesday 25 April, we held a Fashion Show at M&Co in Cromer. The weather was at best wintery and so we were very pleased to see everyone who turned out to support this fun event.
We raised around £100 for Prostate Cancer UK and other local charities and a very big 'thank you' to staff and 'models' on the night.
Incidentally did you know that M&Co are number 14 in the country in the 100 best companies to work for? This speaks volumes for the friendly welcome you get from the obviously happy staff.

Running from 27 May until the end of June, the show features two distinct ranges of wall hung work in fused glass. The first is a series of abstract landscape and seascapes inspired by Susan’s love of the Norfolk that she discovered when she moved here four years ago to fulfil a lifetime’s ambition to live by the sea.
Susan’s other love is the extraordinary world of entertainment that she found in the area.
As she explains, “I have always loved fairgrounds and circuses so I was delighted to discover the wonders at Thursford and the delights of the Water Circus at the Hippodrome at Great Yarmouth. My favourite book is J. B. Priestley’s The Good Companions and it was amazing to find the End of Pier show at the Pavilion Theatre here in Cromer!” Examples of her circus images are also included in the exhibition.
Look out for news on workshops that Susan will be running during Open Studios for the chance to make your own piece of fused glass work.

Focus on Conveyancing - What should you consider when buying your own home?
Questions and answers compiled by Rosemary Farman, Solicitor and Head of Residential Property, and Gaynor Hay, Property Solicitor. According to an article by BBC News published in January 2017, last year was estimated to have seen the highest number of first time buyers since 2007.
Clapham & Collinge property experts understand the difficulties that can come with buying a property, particularly for first time buyers who are new to the process so we have put together five things that a first-time buyer should consider when purchasing their first home: Rosemary Farman
1. Should I buy Freehold or Leasehold property? Owning the freehold of a property means owning the property itself and the land it stands on outright. You own the title absolutely and are known as the 'freeholder'. Freehold is usually the preferred and more straightforward option. Owning a leasehold interest in a property means having a right of occupation for a certain period of time in return for paying a rent. These could be for a relatively short period of time, perhaps 10-20 years, and charge a regular monthly or quarterly rent. Alternatively, they could also be long term lease, often 90-100 years, and are bought for a lump sum, called a premium. 2. What to look for when inspecting a property and
when to have a survey carried out? The seller has very limited duties to disclose matters Gaynor Hay regarding the property to you, and you should therefore always carry out a number of checks to find out as much about the property as you can. You can then make a fully informed decision as to whether to proceed and purchase the property. 3. Funding the purchase. What is involved? If you chose to take out a mortgage, your solicitor will report to you on the mortgage offer and will also act for the mortgage company during the transaction. Such loans are very likely to be secured against the property itself and the lender may have certain rights to enforce any default in payment, including applying for the property to be sold.
4. Why does my solicitor need to investigate the Title? It is important that your solicitor investigates the property title. This will reveal any covenants or restrictions to which the property is subject. For example, any rights of way or charges or restrictions that you would want the seller to remove prior to completion. Finally, any covenants that you as the owner would be subject to in relation to the use or development of the property. 5. Why should I instruct my solicitor to carry out conveyancing searches? Searches are used to identify additional information about a property that would not otherwise be known. A local search, for example, may ighlight planning permission issues or whether there are conservation areas, railway tracks or roadworks in the proximity of the property that may affect the quality of life in your new home. An environmental search will reveal, among other things, potential issues with subsidence or contaminated land.
For more details on any property related issues, please contact Clapham & Collinge Property Solicitors at our North Walsham office on 01692 660230 or Sheringham office on 01263 823398.

Thrills and Spills return to Cromer
Soapbox Derby Sunday 6 August
The third running of what is now becoming one of the dates in the North Norfolk ‘fun events’ sports calendar is set to bring another round of thrills and spills to the streets of Cromer on Sunday 6 August.
The event is already attracting interest with budding soapbox racers drawing up plans for their carts. The entry form and regulations are freely available from The Cottage in Cromer or from the Cromer Carnival website.
This year’s event has a new sponsor, The Westerleigh Group, who operate the newly opened Cromer Crematorium. Commenting on the sponsorship, Crematorium manager Sam Dellbridge said “We are delighted to support Cromer Carnival and wish everyone a fun packed week of entertainment."
Tony Shipp, Chairman of Cromer Carnival said “I am delighted to have the support of The Westerleigh Group as a new sponsor to
Cromer Carnival”.
Commenting on this year’s Soapbox Derby he said “We are excited about the way this year’s event is shaping up. We have retained last year’s higher jump and will be extending the landing ramp so that the carts that fly from the top of the ramp have a better chance of hitting the landing area, thus giving an even fast, and of course smother, landing.”
There are also prizes for fastest cart in each of the three classes and a Concourse de Elegance competition with a certificate for the best soapbox in each class.
The three classes are two junior classes 10 – 15 years and 16 - 18 years with an adult class for those aged 19 and over. More than one driver can use the same cart as long as it passes scrutineering and all drivers who are racing have a fitting crash hat. The closing date for entries is 29 July, although subject to the number of entries on the day, late entries may be accepted.
So, if you want the thrill of racing in front of an audience of hundreds, and to be crowned fastest driver down the hill, pick up an entry form and start building.
He continued “The start ramp is the same as last year with the usual tight chicane to allow the drivers to show their skills on the way to
the finish line.” Scrutineering for the event opens at 11.30am, with the first cart away at 2pm all entries will be given at least two runs so that they can try to improve their time and have a chance of lifting the Malcolm McGreadie Cup for the fastest driver.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
The weather could hardly be described as ‘spring like’ for the Spring Sale on 6 May, although we did raise £650.35 for the cats in care. We would like to thank our volunteers for giving their time to help on the day, and our supporters who ventured out on such a horrible day. A special thank you to Andrea, Bren and Jennie who had been very busy prior to the sale making cakes, jams and all the lovely craft items. Their stalls would have been quite bare without their contributions.
How quickly situations do change. Recently, we actually had an empty pen and no waiting list of cats to come in. This most enviable situation arose because several of the cats went to new homes within a very short period of time. However, we are now back to our normal state, with all pens full and a waiting list that continues to grow each day.
Nutsey, one of the cats at present still with us, came in because his owner had died and he had been abandoned. This poor little lad had very sore eyes and was constantly rubbing them, which only made the situation worse. Initial treatment involved eye drops and steroids but unfortunately they did not improve, in fact the eyelids became more swollen, which resulted in his eyelashes irritating his eyes. David, his vet, decided that an operation was needed to resolve the situation, so off to the vets once more Nutsey went. Initially, he continued to rub the eyes and further medication was needed. However, once Stephanie saw that some of the dissolvable stitches were still in place, David removed these and his eyes are now looking much better. He is still on medication and we are hoping that he will get a clean bill of health when he goes for his next appointment.
Two of the sites where cats are being caught and neutered are now down to the last few cats, which will make life a lot better for them as there will be no additional mouths looking for a meal, but also allows females to enjoy life without maternal responsibilities. We have also been able to help with another site where someone ‘inherited’ 15 (a later count

brought the total to 20) unneutered cats. Apart from one, which has gone missing, all have now been neutered. As 13 of these cats were female, if they had all produced a litter of four kittens (which is an average number), the lady could have had an extra 52 mouths to feed before the end of the summer, by which time the adults could have been pregnant again!

Cromer RNLI thanks ex-crew member
One of Cromer RNLI’s long standing invaluable crew members was presented with awards at a special ceremony on Wednesday 26 April. Adam Lincoln who had various roles in the RNLI both in Cromer and Sheringham from the 1980s until last year, was honoured. His framed certificates showed details of his long service to the RNLI.
Adam originally joined Sheringham’s crew in 1989 and was their assistant tractor driver until 1994. A chance meeting on Cromer beach with Richard Davies – Cromer coxswain at the time and father of the present coxswain John – led to Adam joining Cromer’s crew.
Adam continued with tractor driving to assist launches of the inshore lifeboat but progressed to being a member of the crew of both boats.
Adam Lincoln receiving his certificate and slate from Richard Leeds – Lifeboat Operations Manager Cromer RNLI
Work commitments have meant that, unfortunately, Adam has to step down from these roles but in recognition of his valuable service, Cromer’s crew also presented him with a slate engraved with both boats designs.
Adam said that he had enjoyed serving at both stations and had made a lot of friends.

City of Norwich Pipe Band to join in the fun at this summer’s Great British Prom The great British Prom is returning to Blickling on 12 August and, as well as showcasing the likes of the National Symphony Orchestra, Brit awardwinning Only Men Aloud and Soprano Annette Wardell, some of the performers will be coming from much closer to home.
The Norwich Pipe Band will be joining the great British musical tribute, bringing a special sense of tradition and uniqueness to the Scottish pieces, before walking up the centre of the crowd to mark the end of what will be a truly memorable first half. The pipe band, comprising 8-10 pipers and around seven drummers, with ages ranging from 20s to over 70, will be performing in the first half of the concert which focuses on great British anthems from around the home nations and the Scottish part will include ‘Flower of Scotland’ and other Scottish favourites.
Pipe Sergeant John Welton MBE said “The City of Norwich Pipe Band is proud to be playing its part in the prestigious proms at Blickling Hall and contributing to what is sure to be a superb evening’s rousing entertainment. Playing alongside a full symphony orchestra, conducted by Anthony Inglis, who has featured in more concerts at the Royal Albert Hall than any other living conductor, a well-known choir and vocal soloist is the sort of challenge that band members relish. Blending the sounds of the pipes and drums with other instruments and voices is a way of showing the surprising range of our instruments and their players.”
2017 is proving to be a very busy and interesting season for the City of Norwich Pipe Band, which was formed in 1979.
After featuring in the traditional round of New Year and Burns Night celebrations, the band began preparing for what turned out to be a highly successful three date tour of southern Germany taking part in musical displays in 5000 seat indoor arenas alongside military bands from Ukraine, Moldova, Germany and the Netherlands. Part of the preparations saw the band record its first CD, sales of which also added to the success of the tour. The Band is also honoured to be invited to play during the moving sunset ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres, in September later this year.
Local engagements are also keeping the band occupied with Armed Forces Day in Lowestoft and Wymondham, the Sandringham Flower Show and the ever-popular Lord Mayor’s Procession in Norwich.
Although amateurs, several members have previous military experience and others have learned to play with the band. All are well used to the big occasions that provide opportunities to demonstrate the truly stirring sounds of the pipes and drums, which band members pride themselves on achieving. Several members of the band have played with a symphony orchestra in Norwich before at the annual New Year’s Day Concert and the full band has played alongside many military bands including The Coldstream Guards, the Royal Irish Regiment, The Pipes and Drums of the Brigade of Gurkhas and the Band of the Parachute Regiment. A few have also taken part in the Edinburgh Tattoo with other pipe bands.
It is going to be a special evening, with stirring sounds to ensure another classically British outdoor
concert experience is enjoyed by all. The second half will see a fabulous rendition of all the Proms favourites including ‘Rule Britannia’, ‘Land of Hope & Glory’ and British anthem ‘Jerusalem’ before the fireworks spectacular over the lake.
Car parking is free and there will be food and drink available on site (including a hog roast and Carluccio’s hampers which can be ordered in advance). For more details on the events, visit www.greatbritishprom.co.uk or call 01630 674342. Tickets are £35 in advance (£38 on the night).

There are many people alive today who can remember the ports of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft at the height of their importance as major contributors to the economy of Norfolk and Suffolk but no one has been alive for centuries who can remember the same applying to the port of King’s Lynn. The days when Lynn was the third or fourth most important port in the whole of the country are long gone. This was the theme of the final talk in our winter series given by Dr Paul Richards.
Lynn has been a port for over 1000 years. Its importance was based on the fact that it was the natural outlet for the produce of a hinterland that covered ten counties including not only Norfolk but also Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Leicestershire. The main conduit, of course, was the River Great Ouse. Wine, timber and coal were the main imports and wool, cloth and hides, especially rabbit hides, were exported. It is still possible today Cromer Times 518 May 20th 2017
to see a chalk pathway in the middle of the River Cam in Cambridge along which horses pulled barges from Lynn as the Norfolk port was the port of Cambridge for over 800 years.
Lynn was a member of the Hanseatic League, the major trading organisation linking ports in England, Iceland, Norway, France and the Baltic countries. The 15th century Hanse House in Lynn is the only surviving building in England associated with the Hanseatic League. It was only in 1978 that the last shipment of wine from France was landed in the port. The arrival of the railways in the mid 19th century was the beginning of the decline in the importance of the port of Lynn. It was a slow process as the building of the Alexandra Dock which linked the railways to the port gave the port the opportunity to continue serving its hinterland for many years but industry rather than commerce gradually took over as the mainstay of the

He was the first mayor who was not a lawyer or merchant in a tradition that went back to the early 13th century. Spines set to tingle this summer A heady cocktail of spinechilling premier, comedy, thriller and elegant wit will being served up during Sheringham Little Theatre’s summer drama season.
we have had a playwright involved with a premier here. "This new play crosses and confuses the genres, which makes it fun to work with," she added.
The five-show programme, opening on 21 July and running until 13 September is aimed to amuse, bemuse and thrill.
The theatre is proud of its ‘rep’ tradition stretching back 57 years and always tries to stage a mixture of popular comedy, thrillers and newer works.
Sheringham remains one of a handful of remaining outposts of professional summer ‘repertory’ theatre, where cast members learn a range of different roles.

1 – 9 August - The Business of Murder - Two people meet to discuss a play script. Humourless host Stone and television playwright Dee. Then Supt Hallett, the man she is having an affair with, turns up for a different reason. The psychological thriller plot twists and turns as they share the business of murder.
11 – 22 August - The Revival (Scared to Death) - A spine-chilling premier. Stanley lowers an attractive naked girl from his room window. Her husband turns up – and the husband’s girlfriend. Everybody is in the wrong bed, and people are dressed as nuns and fish in a fast-paced farce. 7 – 13 September - Noel and Gertie A comedy with music which traces the friendship of stage legends Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence, whose joint performances included Private Lives. The show devised by Sheridan Morley captures his wit, their relationship and portrays the style and elegance of the era.

In what has been an overall poor season Norwich fans can look forward to hopefully exciting times ahead, as Stuart Webber and Steve Stone plan for a large summer rebuild as Norwich try and get back in the Premier League.
Watching the final game of the season it was frustrating to see the clear quality we have as Norwich thumped QPR 4-0 on mid Sunday and
it was an opportunity for the club to start a new chapter with the new structure in place; as canary fans said goodbye to one of their most loyal servants over the past 7 years, John Ruddy.
Earlier that week the club had announced 7 players would be released over the close season and those names being: John Ruddy, Ryan Bennett, Steven Whittaker, Sebastien Bassong, Youssouf Mulumbu, Kyle Lafferty and Michael Turner.
The surprise name on that list is John Ruddy, who has been a prominent figure over the last
7 years, however he will move onto pastures new come June 30th and was given the farewell he deserved against QPR.
Ruddy captained the side in his final appearance as he put in a MOM performance with a few good saves in the game as well as interacting with the crow in what will be a fond memory in years to come.
Although it is sad to see John go it is something I feel had to be done as Stuart Webber prepares for the appointment of the new head coach and overhaul of the squad.
DIY obstacle team beat their charity target – and the cold They were cold and bruised after a gruelling assault course half marathon – but a team from a Cromer DIY store has been warmed by their fundraising success.
The charity crew from Homebase spent five hours running, climbing, crawling and diving their way through a 13-mile obstacle course at Burghley House in Lincolnshire at the weekend. Spokesman Tracy Harding said afterwards: “It was tougher than we could have imagined. It was cold and drizzly at the start and we began crawling through mud up to our necks.
“Then we had to go through a freezing cold lake about four times and jump off scaffold towers into man made ponds. We never warmed up and we have bruises on our bruises. Even the fittest people were getting cramp, but we stuck together. “We hit ‘the wall’ at about half way through, but

Another, less gruelling, event later this month will boost the Homebase total even further. The family fun day at Forest Park holiday park at Northrepps on Sunday May 28th from 2pm is open to the public with stalls, children’s games, music and an auction.

saw Cromer win again, this time 6 -2. The results may look confusing but the number of points played for in each league is different When teams have been selected they are displayed on the notice board and players normally congregate at the club before setting out to away games. Should anyone wish to go direct they put a ‘D’ against their name on the list. Simple really you would have thought. Means nobody stays at the clubhouse for them to arrive. I know somebody who couldn’t remember what to do so some confusion arose for the NANSA game. I will not mention her name as I seem to be finding fault and telling stories too often. The first friendly against CMB BC resulted in a win for Cromer 100 shots against 79 shots. Well done team. I got the name wrong last time round. They are in fact Crown Metal Box Company! And they don’t make boxes but most of the cans that you have in your cupboards and fridges. Fizzy drinks, fruit, beans, beer you name it that’s where most of the cans come from. Jean was so pleased to be in the winning rink and receive a pen and notepad from President Philip. He was in the
Tales from the Bowling Green ...
... well the weather has not improved significantly, so morning roll ups have continued in rather draughty conditions. The last weekend before real competitive games started resulted in another Spoon Drive which again was well supported. After playing the usual three sets of 7 ends Roger O’Leary had the best overall score with Les Kiss being the Runner Up. The player suffering from the most shots against this time was George Baker. However the league and friendly games have now commenced. Hardy people these bowlers. Due to a strange quirk of the various fixture lists all the three league game have been away at Holt BC. The Federation team, selected by Richard in the absence of Captain Neil returned home with a very satisfactory 7 – 2 win. The next evening the Norfolk Bowls Association team in the Hansells League had a close game but lost 3½ - 1½. Miss a day and then another trip to Holt in the NANSA league, on what turned out to be the sunniest afternoon we have played,
