The new catering kiosk and facilities, including accessible public toilets, beach showers and changing facilities are receiving their final touches and will be ready for use in advance of the summer season. These FREE facilities are adjacent to the area of disabled parking which was COLLECT & DELIVERY SERVICE provided last year. Cllr Maggie Prior Cabinet Member for Leisure said “These new facilities will be a superb addition to Cromer’s offering and aldismotors@gmail.com we hope residents’ and visitors’ children especiallyNR27 love Cromer’s STONEHILL WAY, HOLT ROAD,will CROMER 9JW very own shipwreck on dry land!

“We are committed to making a number of investments in Cromer to make the town more attractive for local people and visitors. We have a four-year programme to enhance jobs and the tourism economy and it’s great to see yet another element of this come to life.”

Sheringham - only email changed

The new facilities are part of a £1million investment by North Norfolk District Council into Cromer’s West Promenade to increase the attraction of the whole of Cromer Promenade.

Last year improvements were made to the zigzag path, including refurbishment of the viewing turrets and the installation of solar lighting, opening up this end of the Prom to visitors parking at the Runton Road car park. Improvements costing £110,000 were also made to the Art Deco block, where a concession opportunity remains available.

As part of this further phase of investment, the white steps have been refurbished and new promenade lighting will also be installed before the summer. In addition, the children’s play area is set to have an underwater mural painted during June illustrating the flora and fauna of the Cromer Chalk Reef.

Simply the best: North Norfolk’s beaches are top of the league

Council scoops six Blue Flags and wins national recognition

North Norfolk officially is the District with the best beaches in England, with no fewer than six of its beaches being awarded prestigious Blue Flags.

Dales Hotel - Upper Sheringham - 01263 824555

East Runton and West Runton beaches have joined Cromer, Mundesley, Sea Palling and Sheringham in the top tier of English beaches.

2 Desserts for £9.00!

The awards are given out only to those beaches that have the highest quality of water, facilities, environmental education and management, with superb levels of cleanliness and safety. The only other district that has six Blue Flags is Thanet. North Norfolk District Council Leader Cllr Tom FitzPatrick said “This is fantastic news and confirms something we already knew – our wonderful and well-managed beaches are the best in the country. “This is a great result given the amount of resources and services that need to be put in place in order to satisfy the strict criteria. Our staff have put in a tremendous effort in a bid to secure these Blue Flags, and all their hard work has paid off.”

The stunning success comes as the internationallyrecognised awards celebrate their 30th birthday.

As well as the six Blue Flags, the beach at Wells, which is owned by the Holkham Estate but jointly managed by NNDC and the RNLI, has won a Seaside Award, which means it guarantees visitors a clean, safe, attractive and well-managed coastal stretch.

Cllr Maggie Prior, Cabinet Member for Leisure & Culture, said “This Blue Flags success is sure to prove a hit for the tourism industry and will help us attract even more visitors to our beautiful beaches and our wonderful coastline.”

There is evidence that the awards attract more visitors, with the number of people visiting the District’s beaches rising from 100,000 a year to 400,000 since they started being awarded Blue Flags.

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Ward Member for the two new Blue Flag beaches at East and West Runton, said “I am delighted that both beaches in Runton have achieved Blue Flag status. It’s a great achievement by the council, but it’s also down in large part to the great work done by so many people in the community who take great pride in our beaches and help to keep them clean.”

Our Beautiful Beaches

Everyone loves walking our beautiful beaches but look a little closer and you will see washed up wet wipes, plastic bottles, broken helium balloons and pieces of plastic/styrofoam all of which cause injury to marine and land wildlife. Sadly inappropriately discarded poo bags are causing a slow starvation death to animals attracted to the cereal in the stool and eating the plastic bag (horses, deer and cattle are also dying because of this). Whilst birds and sea mammals entangled in balloon ribbon, discarded fishing line and ghost net die from slow strangulation.

At the recent Mundesley Parish Council event, a display showed the shocking amount of beach pollution collected on just three, one hour dog walks.

So next time you visit the beach please take a bag (or use your dog poo bag) and look behind the sea defences or in the piles of seaweed and help tackle our appalling sea pollution. If you visit Mundesley or West Runton beaches look out for the 2 Minute Beach Clean stations which provide litter pickers and bags and share your photos with the worldwide #2minutebeachclean community. Or join one of the forthcoming Marine Conservation beach clean events - they are a great way to meet your neighbours:

• 8 June 4pm Keswick Beach Bacton Rudrams gap • 17 June 2pm Mundesley opposite Beach Hut Cafe Arcade by Coastwatch Tower • 2 July 10am Sea Palling ramp next to Reefs Bar

If you are unable to join us, there are other ways to help such as looking at your lifestyle and doing what you can to educate, minimise plastic use and never allow helium balloons to blow away.

Big Society Fund wants your applications! Growing popularity of Big Society Fund reflected in increased number of applications

Nearly two thirds of parishes across North Norfolk have received at least one Big Society Fund grant from North Norfolk District Council during the first five years of the scheme being run.

And those local groups who have not yet submitted successful applications are being encouraged to do so after it was agreed to continue the fund for at least another year.

In the 2016/17 financial year, ten additional parishes who had not previously received funding made a successful grant application. This means that in total, 77 parishes in North Norfolk have received at least one BSF grant. This equates to 63% of parishes in North Norfolk.

The total handed out by the BSF in the financial year was £273,817.65, shared between 37 grants. The annual allocated budget for the BSF is £225,000. The additional figure of slightly more than £48,000 came from reserves accrued from previous years when the entire allocated grant fund was not used.

The number of applications to the BSF increased by 51% in the last year. Likely reasons for this include increased community need, reduction in the availability of other grants and funding, proactive promotion of the fund, publicity regarding grant awards, and media publicity in relation to completed projects.

Since the fund started in 2012, 183 grant awards totalling approximately £1,400,000 have been made to 150 organisations. A recent meeting of North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet considered these figures and resolved that the BSF grant scheme should continue at its current level of funding (£225,000) for another year.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and chairman of its Big Society Fund Grants Panel, said “This is a very successful fund which has enabled a wide variety of projects to be implemented across an impressive percentage of parishes.

“The fund has particularly benefitted smaller parishes that may be less likely to receive funding for services and facilities from other sources, for example as a result of new housing.

“We would be very keen to receive applications from those parishes who have not yet made successful applications and we have a very professional and supportive team in place to give pre-application guidance to make sure applications meet the criteria.”

Grants from the fund have been used to complete projects of varied sizes. Some have been used as contributions to larger projects requiring significant funding such as those undertaken by Sheringham Museum and the Hawk and Owl Trust at Sculthorpe. Grants offered by the Big Society Fund can be crucial in securing additional funding from organisations such as the Heritage Lottery Fund or Sport England.

Grants have funded projects that have increased volunteering opportunities, reduced social isolation, increased opportunities for people of all ages to participate in sports and activities - thereby improving their physical, mental and social wellbeing - and created sense of pride and cohesion within a community.

In addition, the second North Norfolk Big Society Awards event was held at Sheringham Little Theatre in March 2017. Members of the public as well as a range of organisations were able to nominate people, community projects and organisations for awards. Over 150 people attended the successful event.

Awards were made in the following categories: Outstanding Contribution by a Young Person to Their Community, Voluntary Services to Young People, Voluntary Services Award to Sport, Community Project Award, Voluntary Services to a Neighbourhood, Outstanding Contribution to a Big Society Funded Project, and Act of Heroism Award.

A special thank you was also given to organisations and individuals for their help and support during the tidal surge in January 2017.

Dedication for new flagpole for Cromer RNLI

Cromer RNLI was proud to dedicate the new flagpole outside its Inshore Lifeboat Station to Tony West, a long-time supporter of Cromer RNLI and Cromer.

Money raised at the annual Boxing Day Swim in 2016 was in memory of Tony West who was always a stalwart member of Cromer Carnival, running the children’s events for many years. It was agreed that a permanent memorial to Tony would

GREAT BRITISH PROM CHOIR COMPETITION SHORTLIST ANNOUNCED AND ACHIEVES OVER 60,000 FACEBOOK VIEWS

Revival Productions is delighted to announce the shortlist of the inaugural Great British Prom Choir Competition. As part of the judging process, all choirs on the shortlist were posted on The Great British Prom’s Facebook page on 8th May and have already been viewed by over 60,000 Facebook users, with over 3,000 reactions, comments and shares. Anthony Inglis, the world-famous conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra, will have the ultimate decision on the winning choir, but will take into account the number of “likes” each choir receives on the social media platform.

The Great British Prom sees the National Symphony Orchestra, one of the leading orchestras in the country, perform a veritable feast of iconic and rousing anthems from all corners of the United Kingdom. The winning choir will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to perform “Jerusalem” with the orchestra and join a star-studded line up that also includes globally renowned soprano Annette Wardell, Classical Brit Award-winning Welsh vocal group Only Men Aloud and the City of Norwich Pipe Band. The concert will culminate in a spectacular firework display, choreographed to the music in the delightful outdoor setting of the Blickling Estate on 12 August. The choirs that have been shortlisted for the

Blickling event are:

• Encore: Originally formed in 1984 as South Norfolk Amateur Operatic Society; in 2005, it was decided that the group couldn't continue financially with big productions, so the original name was dropped and Encore…Singing for You was born. Now fully established as a choir, they perform an eclectic mix of music in and around Norfolk.

• Mid Norfolk Singers: Based in Dereham, the choir has 80 members. They perform three concerts a year, most often in churches in Mid Norfolk but have also held concerts in Norwich Cathedral and St Andrews Hall.

• Norwich Community Choir: Formed from humble beginnings to inspire a feeling of belonging to the community through the joy of singing, the choir consists of singers from all ages and backgrounds and is living proof that we all have music inside us.

• Vocalights: is a community choir based in Aylsham. Founded in November 2014, the choir has now grown to over 40. They sing all kinds of music genres including pop, classical, jazz, gospel and seasonal, is hugely sociable with many strong friendships being made within the group and is open to all.

The winning choir will be announced on 14 June and in addition to singing Jerusalem’ during the main part of the performance, will also have the chance to perform before the

main musical programme begins. They will also feature in the concert programme and each member of the choir will receive a complimentary ticket for a guest to witness their performance.

Anthony Inglis commented “It’s great to see that the tradition of local amateur choirs is alive and well in this fantastic country of ours. I was pleasantly surprised by the standard of entries and am looking forward to meeting and performing with the winning choir. Truly memorable performances are those where an invisible bond occurs between the artists and the audience; by adding a local choir to our line-up of globally renowned musicians I am confident that we will achieve this.”

Lisa Ward, Director of Revival Productions, added “We want to thank all the choirs that entered the competition and as a mark of our gratitude have offered all entrants the opportunity to buy two tickets to The Great British Prom for the price of one. It has clearly captured the imagination of the public as shown by the remarkable reaction the shortlist has received on Facebook. Now in its 6th year, The Blickling Proms is well established so this year it is great to be able to involve the local community. It is also a great trial for what we have planned for 2018 – watch this space!” For full event details and tickets visit www.greatbritishprom.co.uk or call the event box office on 01630 674342.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2017? 20 17 ?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2017 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Bringing the Bard to the people – by bike

A pedal-powered theatre company is bringing a novel production of a Shakespeare comedy to a Norfolk college – by bicycle.

The Handlebards touring drama group has taken the classic plays of England’s most famous writer to two countries and three continents since it was set up on a shoestring four years ago.

A four-strong female cast will perform As You Like It in the grounds of Paston Sixth Form College (Lawns site) at North Walsham on Friday 9 June – in a picnic-style show organised by Sheringham Little Theatre.

The plays are billed as energetic, chaotic, full of laughter, and featuring lots of costume changes and cross-dressing for the single sex cast. Hand-crafted Pashley bikes are used in the show, and – with trailers – to provide sustainable transport for the show’s set, props and costumes as well as cast.

The Handlebards aim to take Shakespeare to communities in an eco-friendly, accessible way. They have also promoted British culture on tour in Africa and Asia.

Working Together

Every year the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) have an on-going programme to support the National Wings Appeal that raises funds for serving and former RAF personnel and their families in need.

Funds raised by the Sheringham & District Branch RAFA helps to provide support for local and national demands.

The efforts of the local RAFA Branch are boosted by young volunteers from Air Cadets Penny Othon and Kalan Barratt both aged Training Corps No 13 receive the cheque on behalf of 1895 Squadron 1895 (Cromer) Squadron who, working with their Commanding Officer Flight Lieutenant Brian Keerie, provide willing and enthusiastic support with street and store collections.

In return the Sheringham & District Branch of the RAFA has adopted the squadron and is pleased to make a modest donation to their funds every year.

Young people are invited to expand their horizons by joining the Cromer ATC Squadron which has vacancies for new cadets. If you're a fan of aviation, action and adventure, love sports and getting to know people then the ATC could be for you. Every year many thousands of Air Cadets and Volunteer Staff take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and exciting events all over the country. With 1895 (Cromer) Squadron, you could be one of them! Contact your local ATC at cromeraircadets.org.uk

As You Like It will tell the story of lovers Rosalind and Orlando who have been forced into exile in the Forest of Arden and find themselves entangled in a game of love, lust and mistaken identity.

Little Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “Our theatre has close links with Paston College, especially its drama department, and we are delighted to be able to link up with the college again to stage this novel outdoor Shakespeare production, which should be fun for students and local families alike.”

Doors open at 6pm, with audience members encouraged to pack a picnic and chairs – but to bring ponchos and raincoats, not umbrellas, in case the weather is wet. The show runs from 7pm to 9pm.

For tickets (£12, students £6) and more info contact the Little Theatre box office on 01263 822347 or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

An Everyday Story of Country Folk? By Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

After the last two months’ articles about probate court fee increases akin to a ‘death tax’ I am returning to the much safer territory of a good old family feud about inheritances.

Whatever intellectual spin I might put on it,

such rifts and battles have a soap opera quality about them.

By any measure, the case of Ashcroft v Webster (2017) is extreme.

An Extended Civil Restraint Order (ECRO) made against Rupert Jolyon St. John Webster two years ago has been renewed for a further two years, in order to deter his repeated litigation against other members of his family over a dispute about his late grandparents’ estates.

The legal fees in the case have cost Rupert his house, office and agricultural business; but still he is determined to battle on, even though his case is without merit.

Rupert’s original claim was dismissed in 2013 as it was groundless. It was his parents’ deaths in 2006 and 2007 which triggered the family dispute. Rupert alleged that his grandparents had promised to leave the farmhouse (named The Priory) to Rupert’s father and so therefore Rupert thought that it should now be his, by right of succession. The High Court dismissed his claim but Rupert continued his fight, and on three separate times sought leave to appeal, all of which were dismissed.

Back in 2015, under the ECRO, a judge issued an injunction forbidding Rupert to enter The Priory; to interfere with or prevent the marketing or sale of it; to publish or use words stating that he had to give permission for its sale or that he had

any share in The Priory.

In late April 2017, upon application by the executors, another judge held that Rupert’s behaviour since the 2015 ECRO showed that he will stop at nothing and so renewed the ECRO for another two years. The reasons given were that there is a serious risk to the executors, to the people who have recently bought the house from the estate, and generally to the administration of public justice. Part of the judge’s thinking was that Rupert’s persistent claims are imposing burdens on the stretched court system, to the disadvantage of other court users.

North Walsham Velos

North Walsham Velos members recently completed the Tour de Broads South Sportive, the majority of them completing the 100 mile route, starting and finishing at a very windy Marine Parade, Great Yarmouth. The wind was a real problem for many riders gusting to 40mph it was, for the majority of the ride, either a head or cross wind, making the effort required significantly harder. But with three drink stops and a lunch break at Thorpe St Andrew by the river, the riders were never short of food, drinks and banter.

The friendly nature of these sportives means that support comes from everyone involved an encouraging word during a break, stopping to help fix punctures, to cheering your fellow

riders over the finishing line.

Cycling is a very sociable way of keeping fit and group riding is the best way of venturing further afield, safe in the knowledge the group looks out for each other and keeps everyone safe and mobile.

If you are interested in getting a little fitter North Walsham Velos have beginners rides every Tuesday evening, meeting at the Town Clock in Market Place for a 6.30pm depart. See www.northwalshamvelos.co.uk for details

Further to the North Walsham Velos appeal for a base to train from back in February, we are still hoping someone can help, if you feel you can, please contact Duncan on 07551 005956

STRAND CLUB SPRING LUNCH

We welcomed 17 members to our special meeting on 10 May.

The food and tables had been prepared by the committee and the pavilion looked lovely. Jackie had made table decorations from flowers and greenery, each one topped with a butterfly. These were raffled at the end of the afternoon.

The salad was appetizing, varied and plentiful, and very much appreciated by the members. Glo had made some excellent trifles which were slightly boozy in nature and which

delighted us all no end!

Once the food had been demolished we were invited to trawl through the bring and buy goodies. Many members went home delightedly clutching treasures, including those lucky enough to win Jackie's flower arrangements in the raffle.

Our next meeting will be our outing to Horning for a trip on the Southern Comfort, a Mississippi river boat. As mentioned on the tickets, all those coming should be outside the shop in Overstrand by 11.30am when our

coach will arrive. We expect to be back by around 5.30pm.

The next meeting open to all is on 12 July. A representative from Age UK will join us to talk about the organisation's many ways of helping us. As usual this will begin at 2pm in the Sports Pavilion. Everyone is welcome and visitors will be charged just ÂŁ2 at the door to cover light refreshments. Raffle tickets will be available separately throughout the afternoon. Do come along and see what you think of us!

For further information please contact Jackie Hudson, Chairman, on 01263 720866 or Chris Wood, Secretary, on 01263 579433.

Cantamus Choir Concerts

CANTAMUS choir, under the inspirational musical direction of Philip Adams, gave a marvellous concert at Thorpe Market Church on 19 May.

Celebrating female composers, in this centennial year of the female vote, the choir sang rarely heard pieces including the beautiful mass by Isabella Leonarda and the battle cries of the suffragettes. The rallying songs of composers such as Dame Ethel Smyth, who taught Emmeline Pankhurst how to hurl missiles more effectively, have almost been forgotten. Yet this sometimes rousing, sometimes reflective music has a hugely important place in our social history. Forthcoming Fundraising Concert : Cantamus will be repeating their applauded concert on 15 June in Itteringham Village Hall, NR11 7AX, at 7pm in support of the Itteringham Village Shop appeal. Philip Adams and the choir will be accompanied by renowned composer and pianist Michael Finissy, adding magic to works by Fauré and Messager, this unique concert is not to be missed. Entry will be by donations and a fundraising raffle will be held. Refreshments will also be available.

Membership : New members are positively welcome to join the choir from 7 September. We rehearse at Thorpe Market Church on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm for 2 hours and meet for the Autumn and Spring terms only. We are particularly interested in having more men join us. If you are interested in choral music then do contact the Secretary for further information on 01263 833847 or by email cantamussingers@gmail.com.

Itteringham Open Gardens

Tucked away in North Norfolk, the beautiful village of Itteringham is holding its annual open gardens event on 11 June from 11am 5pm.

Along with 10 gardens to visit, there will be plants for sale and homemade teas, cakes & light lunches available, both at the shop and the village hall.

All money raised on the day is going to support Itteringham Community Shop.

Organiser, Rachel Burbidge said "We have a wonderful selection of gardens open for visitors to enjoy, including large rectory gardens, courtyards and small cottage gardens.

Following the success of last year's event we are expecting a bumper turnout on the day as we know how many people locally love gardens, and want to support our village shop".

The village shop became one of the country's first community run shops when Brian Fairhead, the last owner died, back in 1994. There has been a shop trading on the same site in Wolterton Road since 1637, and with the shop's future currently in doubt, this is one of the key fundraising events of the year. Lastly, but very unfortunately, our planned Motor Cycle Rally due to take place on 10 and 11 June has now been cancelled. We are all extremely disappointed as this would have been a great event for families, bikers and all who would attend and we hoped to make several thousand pounds profit for Prostate Cancer UK. Let’s get Social for Summer

With summer finally making its presence felt, Cromer has been awash with visitors and the town’s businesses will be rolling out the red carpet to make sure everyone feels welcome. The summer season is, of course, an important component in Cromer’s success. The ‘60s revival week-end and the Crab & Lobster Festival have got us off to a good start and there is plenty more to come.

To get the town looking its best, the Chamber has been pushing ahead with its projects to improve signage around the town and ensure that maps and other information about local businesses and attractions are easily available. We’re always keen to hear from businesses who have other ideas or initiatives for sprucing the place up! Some businesses have also been taking to social media to get positive messages about the town out to a wider audience. This is a form of marketing that the Chamber is keen to encourage and is happy to give pointers to any traders seeking to get the most out of it.

But, as the summer gets into full swing, we will still be keeping in mind our desire to promote the town as a year-round destination, and trying to turn some of our summer visitors into winter returners!

If you’d like more information about the chamber and its work in Cromer then contact Gary on 01263 579422 or gary@cromerchamber.org.uk 16

Full programme for Holt Festival 2017 revealed ‘One of the most important cultural events roof conservatory in Norfolk’ Peter Wilson, former Chief doorRoyal removed Executive, Norwich Theatre

replacement

Endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) is a quick, minimally invasive alternative to traditional vein stripping, and can be performed under local anaesthesia. addedThis removes the need for invasive surgery under general anaesthetic.

The full programme for Holt Festival 2017, North Norfolk’s award winning, multi-arts, international festival has been announced. Now in its 9th year, the Festival brings outstanding theatre, music, comedy, literature, children’s and visual art events to the picturesque Georgian town for eight days, from 22 to 30 July. This year’s festival is the final year of Charles Pugh’s tenure as Artistic Director, and he has delivered a programme that combines the best of national and international talents with some of the cream of our own Norfolk performers.

Approximately half of the population has some form of venous disease, and varicose veins affect about one out of two people age 50 and older, and 15-25% of all adults. Bulging varicose veins in the lower leg are usually caused by a faulty valve located higher in the leg that can’t be seen at the surface.

EVLT treats the source of the problem, which then causes the varicose vein in the lower leg to shrink and disappear. It involves the insertion of an ultrasound-guided laser fibre directly into the incompetent great or short saphenous vein. Laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut.

Outgoing Artistic Director Charles Pugh said ‘I’m so proud of this programme. I think, perhaps the most diverse we’ve yet delivered. From the unabashed popularity of glam rocker Suzi Quatro and one of the country’s funniest comedians Jasper Carrott, to tales of warmongers, witch hunters, brain attacks and public money squanderers. CROMER IN BLOOM

Cromer in Bloom have had another busy few months, tidying and planting some of the 25 gardens we look after around the town.

We started the year by ‘stripping out’ the black bamboos next to the Tourist Information Centre. This involved removing the lower leaves and twiggy bits to reveal the lovely black stems, which look very smart against the white background of the TIC. We also tidied up the phormiums by cutting away dead and old strappy leaves - we collected at least 12 sacks of leaves!

The huge buddleia also benefitted from a rather drastic prune, which has opened up the space and let more light to other smaller plants underneath. We planted alpine phlox, pinks and perennial wallflowers, which should spread and give good ground cover, especially if we have some rain very soon! The April drought has affected growing conditions and we have had to water many of the newly planted beds. This is quite time consuming, as we only have access to water courtesy of just a couple of businesses around the town. The beds on the traffic island on West Street and Prince of Wales Road would benefit from extra watering, especially as we are

about to plant some colourful annuals – are there any businesses nearby who could help?

We would like to thank the Town Council who have once again supported us with a grant to enable us to keep the gardens looking good around the town. Also many thanks to Simon Clipsom at Morrisons who presented us with a voucher for some plants.

On a sad note, we were very sorry to lose one of our long-standing members, Roger Tipple, who passed away in April. We planted a Sambucus Nigra (black elderberry) in his memory.

“The Giddy Goat” is a Real Ale shop specialising in truly wonderful Norfolk Beers and Ciders.

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

At our monthly meeting, Joanne Randell gave a lively demonstration on ‘Raindrops on Roses’, that is her favourite things.

These included Tiffanys, a lovely wedding arrangement on a blue box tied up with ribbon.

She also loves cocktails, so she made a very pretty arrangement with an orchid in a tall cocktail glass.

We had a tribute to Hector, the most spoilt dog in Norfolk, which was a much-admired arrangement on a log, evoking the woods.

One of her favourite people is Roger Federer, so we were treated to a purple and green arrangement in a tall glass vase filled with tennis balls. Best in show in our competition was won by Liz Crane. The title was ‘Beside the Sea’. Her arrangement was in shell with all plant material from her garden, it also included a Cromer crab shell and some Cromer sand!

At our next meeting on 19 June Wendy Goodliffe is our demonstrator on ‘A Stitch in Time’. It will be held at the Cromer Primary School at 7.20pm.

Crown Barbers! The NEW barbershop of Cromer.

Specialising in men’s haircuts and styles, beard shaping and traditional cut throat shaving with hot towels. My name is James Abbs, and I have opened up a new barber shop in Cromer, on the one way system (Mount Street near Merchant's Court). For years I have hoped Cromer would open a barber shop which is detail specific, where I could book an appointment and get that good feeling when I left; that there was no rush and I came out with the haircut I wanted, finished to a high standard!

I also didn’t want the hassle of having to travel up to Norwich, spend my whole day there, costing a lot of money with traveling, parking and possibly food. For me, I will still have to do this, but for YOU, I am here at Crown Barbers! Crown Barbers has the art of gentlemen's grooming in a vintage yet modern way. All with care and attention to detail. Barbering has been a hobby and passion of mine for years and I am so pleased to say this is my job. I love my job. Now that's priceless. I can cater for all ages and types of hair. I am appointment based, so you can either ring me on 07930 557762 or find me on social media by searching Crown Barbers Cromer.

Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios

Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios is the perfect opportunity to explore the width and breadth of the county.

With more than 500 artists taking part across more than 250 venues, this ever popular art event offers visitors the chance to see how, and where, artists work.

A total of 13 schools are also taking part, and 17 art trails have been organised by artists, each one offering routes linking neighbouring studios.

The trails allow people to make a full day out of their visits, to enjoy not only the art but also as a way of exploring the beautiful Norfolk countryside.

Artists taking part are working in a diverse range of art forms and techniques, including wood turning, sculpture, glass work, papercuts, painting, textiles, jewellery, printing, ceramics and mosaic.

Ros Dixon, Administrator, said “Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios has been celebrating the diversity and talent of the county’s visual artists for more than 20 years. It’s a wonderful opportunity to see and meet artists in traditional studio spaces as well as garages, sheds and spare rooms. I look forward to Open Studios each year, and I’d like to thank all

To l

of the funders who help support the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios scheme, and in particular to thank our lead sponsor Wex Photographic.”

The 16-day scheme attracts thousands of visitors each year, and as one visitor said “I love to hear how each artist develops their ideas and concepts and relish the opportunity to purchase not only beautiful creations, but something with meaning. It is the highlight of my summer!”

Some of the artists taking part have been involved since the scheme was launched 23 years ago and, for others, it will be their first year.

Broadland and Great Yarmouth Open Studios artist Colin Palmer, said “This is my very first year participating in Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios and it has been a great experience meeting fellow artists. There are some very beautiful pieces of art being quietly produced in this area by truly modest people with natural talent.”

Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios is organised in partnership with Norfolk artists and in association with Wex Photographic.

Continuing their support since 2014, Emma van Deventer, Events Manager at Wex Photographic, said “We are delighted to be associated with the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studio programme, whose commitment to encouraging and promoting local artists

reflects Wex Photographic’s core ethos. I look forward to experiencing the best of the Norfolk arts scene again in 2017.”

Studios are free to visit and all details, including studio opening days, directions, Art Trails and additional events and demonstrations, can be found in the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios brochure and on the website.

Brochures can be picked up from participating artist’s studios, Tourist Information Centres, Libraries, cafes and various art venues across the county.

Sculptor Henry Stephen, who is taking part for the first time, said “I had already heard of the fab network of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studio artists, and I wanted to take part and connect to something larger than my own practice. I’m really looking forward to it.”

The event runs from 27 May until 11 June. For more information visit www.nnopenstudios.org.uk photo: Ben Zaven Crane

‘Our Day Out’ Older Peoples Music and Dance activities in North Norfolk!

Older people in the North Norfolk area have had an extra spring in their step this springtime, through a series of fantastic free music and dance activities taking place at Wells-next-the-Sea.

A full range of legal services for businesses and individuals in North Norfolk Your local trusted law firm in Sheringham

The fortnightly sessions are part of the ‘Our Day Out’ programme, an inclusive group for all older people, engaging participants in fun and stimulating activities, delivered by professionally trained arts practitioners, through arts and community development charity, Creative Arts East.

‘Our Day Out’ welcomes all older people, and is supportive of those living with early to mid-stage dementia and their carers, as well as older people living with long-term health conditions.

The ‘Our Day Out’ programme has received funding from Spirit of 2012, an independent trust established with Big Lottery funding, North Norfolk District Council and Breckland Council, to provide high quality and beneficial creative sessions for older people.

So far this year, the groups have been enjoying making music with Paul and Les, combining digital music acoustic instruments to make their own original music and some fun and entertaining dance sessions with Glass House Dance Company.

Coming up in June are more music sessions with Paul and Les, taking place in Wells on Tuesday 13 and 27 June from 12.30pm to 2:30pm at the Wells Community Hospital, Mill Road, Wells-next-the-sea, and in North Walsham on Thursday 8 and 22 June from 1.30pm to 3.30pm at The Cameo CafĂŠ, Furze Hill Resource Centre, Happisburgh Road, North Walsham NR28 9HD, as well as work planned in the near future with more local artists and international companies such as Rambert and the Matthew Bourne company.

Creative Arts East are keen to hear from older people who would like to join these sessions that are all about having some fun and feeling good afterwards. There are also opportunities for people who would like to become involved as volunteers, and help someone smile this summer. For more information on the ‘Our Day Out’ sessions, please contact Lea Schiller at Creative Arts East on 01953 713390 or email lea@creativeartseast.co.uk

Showcasing building excellence – nominate your favourite project Entry opens for 36th year of Graham Allen Awards Help to celebrate excellent design which complements the area by nominating a building for a Graham Allen Award.

North Norfolk has a history of producing high quality innovative developments and sensitive renovation projects that complement the district’s unique environment.

North Norfolk District Council’s Graham Allen Award has for the last 35 years celebrated best practice in design and conservation in the district and is now open for entries.

Cllr Sue Arnold, Cabinet Member for Planning, said “There is a long and impressive history of quality development and thoughtful renovation in north Norfolk and these awards are designed to celebrate that fact. The awards are an excellent chance to recognise projects which have made a standout contribution to the built environment, local communities and heritage. Whether it be a new build, extension, restoration or refurbishment, the Graham Allen Award recognises excellence in all design projects.” Originally inaugurated in 1982 as a memorial to the late Graham Allen, the first Chairman of NNDC, the awards scheme has recognised a diverse selection of north Norfolk’s finest architecture. Winners have ranged from the extension to Binham Priory, to the refurbishment of the Gunton Arms, Thorpe Market.

Last year’s winner was Hootz House at Pensthorpe Natural Park. The imaginative play barn has been a huge success for the region and its unique design has added to its fame. As well as winning the Graham Allen Award, the project has also been nominated for a number of national awards including from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The project has created high quality children’s play facilities within a building that complements the naturalistic setting of the nature reserve and this has all been done whilst utilising sustainable methods of construction.

The People’s Choice Award went to the new tourist information centre and platform bridge at Sheringham Train Station. This project captured the unique character of the station and improved facilities for residents and visitors alike.

If you are aware of a building project that has helped to transform your village or town within the district, or if you have created a dream home or building we want to hear from you.

The closing date for entries is Friday 30 June. For more information go to www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/tasks/conservation/nominate-a-building-fora-conservation-design-award-2017/. If you are nominating a scheme please ensure you have the permission of the owner.

The Graham Allen Award is presented annually by the council to the scheme considered to make the most significant contribution to the built environment within the district. Schemes considered worthy of commendation are also acknowledged by the presentation of certificates. The panel of judges comprises of members elected from the Development Committee, the relevant Portfolio Member and Mr Edward Allen (who represents the Allen family). If you would like to nominate a scheme please go online and complete the entry form.

Laser therapy helping pets at Toll Barn Vets

At Toll Barn Vets we believe in constantly providing the highest standard of care for our patients by utilising cutting edge technology to reduce reliance on medication. This is particularly beneficial for chronic conditions and significantly improves our pets’ quality of life.

As part of this commitment we offer our patients Laser Therapy which reduces inflammation and provides pain relief. It is effective at treating acute and chronic pain as well as improving wound healing. It is most frequently performed in contact with the area being treated, however, for nervous patients it can be used without contact with the body and can also be applied to acupuncture points to achieve similar responses to traditional acupuncture without requiring

application of needles.

Laser therapy is safe, painless and fast with most sessions taking 5-10 minutes per area of treatment and most patients show significant improvement after 3-5 treatment sessions.

Laser therapy stimulates the body’s own healing powers by stimulating cellular activity which reduces inflammation, provides pain relief, stimulates nerve regeneration and improves tissue repair often leading to a reduction in requirement for medication and reduced healing times. Laser therapy often forms part of the treatment for osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease (eg hip and elbow dysplasia), intervertebral disc disease (spinal pain), skin disease, post operative wound healing, sprains and strains, treatment of orthopaedic disease (eg cruciate ligament rupture) and periodontal disease. We are one of the few centres within East Anglia to have a Laser suitable to perform these treatments and are happy to discuss the suitability of laser therapy as part of your pet’s care.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Nutsey’s eyes continue to show an improvement but at present we are unsure whether or not he will need to continue with his treatment to ensure the problem does not recur. He is a lovely friendly boy and does love to have a cuddle when you go in to clean his pen. Once he has had a fuss he will go and sit in his housing unit while we make his pen clean and tidy again.

We recently took in two cats and seven kittens from a home where the owner had health problems and could no longer look after them. One of the cats, and the oldest kitten, were re-homed shortly after they had been examined, vaccinated, chipped and given clean bills of health by our vets. The other kittens were quite small but, as Stephanie always has a waiting list of people looking to offer homes to kittens, we knew they would also be leaving us as soon as they had been checked over at the vets. They have all now left and are happily settled with their new families. Rae Rae, their mother, was a joy to look after, a lovely gentle

Our Day Centre is based in the heart of Cromer which provides our members with a base for lots of different activities and houses our purpose built Sensory Room, Art Room, Cinema Room, Transitional Group Room and Bespoke Quiet Room’s. Open 5 days a week, we can offer 1-1 and 2-1 Bespoke Support as well as small group settings with no more than 9 members in a group at one time.

little cat, very happy to be groomed and cuddled by everyone she came into contact with. She was also a very good mother and could often be found playing with her kittens and showing her “kittenish” side. We were therefore all delighted to learn that this lovely little cat had been chosen too and is now in residence in her new home. Lucky little cat, lucky new family.

Rae Rae, our lovely little mum with Fred, one of her delightful kittens, now settled in their new homes

We also recently had a call from our friend catching the feral cats to say that they had found a little kitten about two weeks old. About to leave to clean the cats at Dilham, I made a quick detour and picked her up. On returning home, there was another message to say that a second kitten had been caught and I therefore returned to the site to collect it, but by the time I arrived to collect it another kitten had been found so there were two more kittens to come into care making, it three in all. These last two were about 6 weeks old and fortunately, after one day, they had started to eat both wet and dry kitten food, so are thriving and no doubt will soon be in new homes with people on the waiting list. It is now a priority to catch the remaining cats on this site before they become pregnant again. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

We have a horticultural group at our smallholding in Bale, near Holt, for members interested in gardening and animal care. We have ponies and a variety of animals for our members to tend too. They also offer a gardening service to the local community. Jade Davidson

Nissan Qualified Technician Success for Harry

Harry Pigott joined Crayford and Abbs in Year 10 at school, deciding to fulfil a lifetime ambition to be a mechanic, having lived with dyslexia all his life, alongside the stigma of being ‘thick’ (his quote).

Harry instantly felt at home in the mechanical environment and gained respect from his seniors very quickly. So much so that we offered him a three year manufacturing apprenticeship with Nissan, the qualifier being an online assessment in the first instance, which he passed without the prescribed assistance!

Harry’s journey has been one of massive success. Cromer Academy supported Kevin Abbs in offering him an extra six months’ evening tutorials and an exam to complete his English to desired standards, and Crayford and Abbs funded some private tuition to assist him Cromer Times 519 June 3rd 2017

to pass his Maths.

Throughout the three year apprenticeship, Harry has continually proven his technical and electrical skills, passing every component of his qualification - indeed his Nissan tutor praised his natural ability and supported this with confirming he would trust him to work on his own car and that he was one of his ‘success/star’ pupils.

Mark Wright stated what a pleasure Harry is to work with he is always on time and arrives with a smile!

Harry graduated this year, taking his Service Manager, Mark Wright and DP, Kevin Abbs, alongside his girlfriend, Kimberly, to the Nissan Graduation Ceremony at Donnington

Kevin Abbs added ‘what a pleasure it has been to watch Harry grow from a young 15 year old through to a fully qualified Nissan Technician, a young man and a credit to Crayford and Abbs.

The final step of the journey is for him to complete a Master Technician qualification, which should commence in a couple of years’ time.

On Sunday 14 May, over 100 competitors attended Redwings’ annual horse show at Topthorn Equestrian Centre in Suffolk. Participants competed in more than 50 classes including Donkey Breed Society affiliated classes, working hunters, novices and those just for fun, as well as the rescue classes in which several Redwings’ ponies competed.

Zoe and Dilly made the Supreme Championship in the 2016 Redwings Show, so were delighted to have gone one better this year by taking Reserve. But that was not where Zoe’s success ended, as she also won Coloureds/ Palominos and Spots In-hand in Ring Four with cob Little Sharpie.

Rescue and Elsey placed second in Prettiest Mare in Ring Three. Meanwhile Blue Cross Vaughn and Amy Bloomfield also had a fantastic day having won Working Hunter (60m) in Ring Five, Ridden Best Rescue in Ring Two and taking Ring Two Reserve Champion.

two-and-a-half years and this is the first time we’ve done any showing together. We’ve loved it – it’s been really good fun.” Rescue classes were really well attended this year and Redwings’ rehomed rescue horses put in fantastic performances throughout. Redwings Vincent and Redwings Elsey made their showing debut with Guardian owners Mark and Rachel Kennedy, with Vincent winning In-hand Best

“We’re so pleased to be able to create a welcoming, supportive and fun environment for these competitors, while also providing some healthy competition for those more experienced riders looking to challenge themselves. And despite the changeable weather, we again had a fantastic turnout and high number of class entries – another successful Redwings Show!”

LOCAL MUSIC TEACHERS NEW PLAY TO PREMIER AT THE ATRIUM, NORTH WALSHAM

Local classical guitar teacher, Ashley Burgoyne, will be premiering his new play ‘The Village Hall’ at the Atrium Theatre, North Walsham this summer.

The play will be presented by Stage Direct who have previously had successful shows at the Atrium in 2013 and 2014, along with many years of experience of putting on performances at various prestigious venues such as the Granary Theatre at Wells and Sheringham Little Theatre. Stage Direct boasts of having a clutch of talented writers in their midst with more debut plays planned in the near future.

Ashley, a former Paston College student currently teachers the guitar at schools in North Walsham and the surrounding area. He joined Stage Direct Drama group five years ago and has been either a member of the cast or crew in many of their productions.

Ashley will also be directing the play and says that he was delighted when Stage Direct agreed to premier his new play.

L>R Daisy Groom, Robert Wright Front of house staff for this and Shania Waterson production will be members of Friends of Colby School, with all profits going to this charity.

Performance dates are 7 and 8 July and tickets are available from the door and ticketsource.co.uk/stagedirect or online via links from Stage Direct Facebook page or website at

‘The Village Hall’ says Ashley ‘is a comic play, with dark undercurrents, based around the comings and goings of a parish committee and an amateur drama group, which both share the same village hall. The committee are planning their assault on the village games and the drama group are working on their new play. The sinister, dark undercurrents lead up to the play coming to a rather unique conclusion!’

There is also some incidental music within the production.‘As a music teacher I couldn’t resist composing some music for the production!’ added Ashley.

Apart from long term members, there will be three new, younger members joining the production. Shania Waterson (former student at Cromer academy) and Robert Wright (former student Aylsham High) are both currently studying at City College and Daisy Groom, currently studying at Aylsham High School, will be making their Stage Direct debut. 32

Farke the man for Norwich? by Joel Lodge, our Football Correspondent

At the time of me writing this article the head coach search for Norwich City looks to be a near done deal, as Stuart Webber looks to have found his man. The coach in question is Borussia Dortmund’s U23s team manager, Daniel Farke. The news of this was first broken on Monday 22nd May by John Percy of the Telegraph, with reports saying he is close to signing a two year deal with Norwich as he leaves Borussia Dortmund U23s at the end of the current season. Farke seems to be very much cut from the same cloth as Wagner who Webber appointed as Huddersfield head coach in 2015. Since Wagner left, Farke has had good success at

Dortmund after turning them into promotion ready candidates in the German fourth division with the nest defensive record in the league; somewhere that Norwich certainly need to address. After doing some research myself, it seems as though Dortmund fans see him as a coach who is certainly on the up so it could potentially represent something of a coup for Norwich City. Farke has also been linked with two Bundesliga teams during his tenure with Dortmund U23s, as Bayer Leverkusen and Darmstadt have both been linked with the 40 year old German.

In terms of incomings there have been little rumours so far, however out of contract Barnsley winger, Marley Watkins, seems set for a move to Carrow Road after a very good season last year. The coming months should be a very interesting and exciting time to be a Norwich fans we await the start of next season. STOP PRESS: Norwich bag thier man just before we went to press - a 2-year contract to get Canaries back into the Premier League. Fun times ahead!

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club Tales from the Bowling Green ...

A report just about match results and forthcoming games this week as I have been away and not caught up with any gossip! In the Hansells League the team had a close game against Cawston but lost 2 – 3. The following week unfortunately our opponents Suffield Park were unable to raise a team so the match was postponed, but will now be played on Monday 19 June. The Federation team were at home against Foulsham and were delighted to achieve a 9 – 0 win.

The following week however against league newcomers Marham the result was not so good with a 2 – 7 defeat.

The NANSA afternoon team were away to Smallborough & Dilham and once again this year found the green not to their liking and lost 0 – 8. However Captain Bernard stirred his troops and later in the same week at home against West Runton the team won 6 – 2.

County Competition. Three rinks of four with two men and two ladies in each rink. That will certainly be a hard task as we have been drawn away against County Arts in Norwich. On 16th June there is the Bales Cup which is the countywide club competition. Drawn in areas for the early rounds and if the club is successful the later rounds could be played against clubs anywhere in the county. We will be at home against Reepham Nomads.

I list below our forthcoming ‘home’ fixtures that you may wish to come along, watch and enjoy. Saturday 3 June 2pm R G Carter BC: Mixed triples game Sunday 4 June 2pm Rushymead BC: Mixed rinks game Thursday 8 June 2pm Thorpe Recreation BC: Ladies rinks game Tuesday 13 June 6.45pm Whissonsett: Federation League game Wednesday 14 June 6.30pm County Arts ‘B’: NBA League game Friday 16 June 6.30pm Reepham Nomads: Norfolk County Club Competition Saturday 17 June 2pm Longthorpe BC: Mixed rinks game

A very enjoyable ‘friendly’ match took place at home against Kings Lynn BC. Once again the club were praised by the visiting players regarding the quality of the green which is so good to hear taking into consideration the time and effort put in by ‘Ranger’ Neil, Jackie and Phil. The result was so very close with Cromer coming out in front but only by 113 shots to 110. A similar match will be arranged for 2018. We have a number of friendly and competitive games coming up as well as the normal weekly league games.

By the time you read this we will have played in the Lord Fermoy Cup against R G Carter BC. That is when one rink of four play at home and another rink play on the opposition green on the same evening at the same time. The aggregate score of both games decides the winners. We shall also have competed in the Jermy cup which is the only mixed
