Cromer Walkers Are Welcome - Festival Triple! Cromer Walkers are Welcome organised two walks from Cromer to Sheringham on the Crab & Lobster Festival Sunday - linking both towns in a very special way.

The family walk, co-organised with Sheringham Ramblers, set off first. People came from all over the county and beyond, 35 plus four dogs. Billed as a family walk, we were delighted to have three generations of one family join us, including Thomas at only nine months old (he didn’t walk far). We enjoyed a wonderful walk that included three of Norfolk’s highlights, Inkleborough, Steep and Beeston Hills. It should be noted that Mum carried little Tommy up two of the highest hills, but Dad took a turn, over Beeston Bump. Continued on page 4... New Puzzle Page & Competition inside this issue

Cromer Walkers Are Welcome - Festival Triple!

34-40 Station road, Sheringham 01263 823258 blythwright@btconnect.com www.blythandwright.co.uk

Continued from front cover... Our newly appointed Cromer Mayor led from the front - smart suit, polished shoes, tie, complete with Mayoral Chain. Well done John Frosdick! He was not the only celebrity - we were met below Beeston Bump for the final section into Sheringham, by Norman Lamb. He found time in his busy election schedule to walk the last section, to receive a warm welcome in Sheringham.

The second walk, co-organised with Cromer Sea Scouts, was led by Hilary Cox dressed in a full crab costume to create a fun element. Even the youngest managed the five mile route to Roman Camp & over Beeston Bump. Razz the Clown welcomed them to Sheringham & issued achievement award certificates to all who took part.

Cromer Inshore Lifeboat called out to assist beach casualty

Cromer’s Inshore Lifeboat was called out at 15.35 on Sunday 28 May to assist HM Coastguard in transporting a casualty back to Cromer esplanade. A person had fallen and sustained an injury about three quarters of a mile from the promenade. Cromer beach was very busy with visitors on a hot day, so to ensure the casualty was handed over to an ambulance as soon as possible, it was agreed that the inshore lifeboat ‘George and Muriel’ be launched.

The boat crew were soon on the scene and after initial triage, the casualty was quickly on board and on their way to the waiting ambulance. Once another assessment was completed the ambulance left the scene to go to the hospital.

Richard Leeds, Cromer’s Lifeboat Operations Manager said ‘This was an excellent example of all the emergency services working efficiently together. We all knew the role we had to do and our RNLI training prepares us for these types of emergency’

EVENING APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE

By 16.40 the inshore lifeboat had been cleaned down and made ready for its next callout.

CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS – REVIEW

LAURA SNOWDEN – GUITAR

Laura Snowden

Cromer Music Evenings invited the young guitarist to p erform for the penultimate concert of the 2016/17 series.

Having started her studies at the Yehudi Menuhin School, then on to the Royal College of Music winning many prizes, led to being hand picked by Julian Bream to give a recital at the Wigmore Hall. After today's recital one can understand why.

Playing music by John Dowland, Villa Lobos, Laura Snowden, Rodrigo, Richard Rodney Bennett, Barrios, Tarrega and Kaspar Mertz.

The two compositions by Laura Snowden were mesmerising – one named Anpao (the Goddess of Dawn), expressed thoughts whilst waiting to board a plane in the very early hours and the second piece, L'Etoile et la Rose, was an

Dear Margaret,

Through your paper I would like to make an appeal to the people and community of Cromer and its surrounding areas, regarding the future of Cromer Town Football Club.

From the early 1970s to the mid 1990s I was fortunate to represent the Club as a player, Committee member and regularly helped Norman Troller run the Cromer FC bingo. At the end of my playing days I then went on to manage the Cromer reserve team for several years before ending my connection with the Club.

Having attended two recent meetings, which were called to determine the future of the Club, it has become evident that more support is needed to ensure Cromer Football Club’s survival.

It has been stated that the Annual General Meeting will be held at Cabbell Park during the second week in July (date/time to be confirmed), when the public support/non support at this meeting will decide the future of the Club.

So come on the people of Cromer whatever your age or help you can give in an official, financial, general or playing capacity, I urge you to attend this meeting.

Let’s not let the heritage and hard work of all past and present players, Committee members, volunteers and the legacy of the Club go to waste, and keep this Club going.

Tony Battrick West Street, Cromer

Let’s get Social for Summer

With summer finally making its presence felt, Cromer has been awash with visitors and the town’s businesses will be rolling out the red carpet to make sure everyone feels welcome. The summer season is, of course, an important component in Cromer’s success. The ‘60s revival weekend and the Crab & Lobster Festival have got us off to a good start and there is plenty more to come.

To get the town looking its best, the Chamber has been pushing ahead with its projects to improve signage around the town and ensure that maps and other information about local businesses and attractions are easily available. We are always keen to hear from businesses who have other ideas or initiatives for sprucing the place up! Some businesses have also been taking to social media to get positive messages about the town out to a wider audience. This is a form of marketing that the Chamber is keen to encourage and is happy to give pointers to any traders seeking to get the most out of it.

But, as the summer gets into full swing, we will still be keeping in mind our desire to promote the town as a year-round destination, and trying to turn some of our summer visitors into winter returners!

If you’d like more information about the chamber and its work in Cromer then contact Gary on 01263 579422 or gary@cromerchamber.org.uk

Blickling unveils new family-friendly multi-use trail The National Trust has opened a new all-weather, multi-use trail at Blickling that will give families the opportunity to get active and discover the wider parkland and abundant wildlife that calls it home.

Officially opened on 9 June, the route at Blickling offers a new 4-mile safe off-road path through the beautiful historic park and farmland. The new trail follows existing paths for all but 800m, with a new stretch completing a circular loop that avoids roads. The all-weather surface also means more people can explore the estate whatever the season. Stuart Banks, Countryside Manager at Blickling, said “With more families visiting Blickling, it’s important for us to provide a safe place for them to enjoy the wider estate. Cycling is an activity that the whole family can enjoy together and this

“It’s a traffic-free environment, and has an all-weather surface that’s suitable for pushchairs and buggies too, so we hope families with younger children will now find it easier to explore the wider estate. It’s also suitable for adapted wheelchair users and we hope to have a mobility scooter available to hire in the coming months.” The park is Grade II listed, which meant that very careful consideration had to be given to the material used for the trail’s surface.

National Trust Project Manager, Katherine Mortlock, said “Carrstone is a local stone that weathers quickly and gives a suitable surface for cyclists, walkers, runners and adapted wheelchair users. The conservation benefits of the path are already being felt and were one of the prime

considerations of the project.”

The new trail has enabled Blickling’s countryside team to improve and repair many areas, which had previously been muddy or pot-holed from heavy use, making the park more accessible even in the wettest weather. There was also noticeably less damage during Blickling’s recent bluebell season, with visitors keeping to the well-marked path, protecting these native wildflowers.

The National Trust would like to thank our members, supporters, donors and visitors, without whom projects like this would not be possible. And with the trail starting and finishing at the Muddy Boots Café in the main car park, there's lots of opportunity for a well-earned treat too.

Glazed Egg Custard Tart

Ian Wales is Sous Chef at the Links Hotel and this is one of his favourites.

For the pastry 140g butter (diced and chilled) 250g Plain flour, 1 zest of lemon, 100g caster sugar, 1 egg (beaten) 1 tablespoon milk. For the egg custard 250g double cream, 250g milk, 1 vanilla pod split, whole nutmeg, 8 egg yolks, 100g caster sugar.

1. To make the pastry, rub the butter into the flour with the lemon zest until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the sugar, egg and milk and bring together to form a dough. This can be made a couple of days in advance.

2. On a lightly floured surface, roll the pastry out and use it to line a 20cm tart tin, leave 2cm of pastry hanging over the edge. Rest the pastry in the fridge for 30 mins

3. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line the case with baking beans, bake blind for 20 mins, then remove the beans and continue to cook for a further 20 mins until the base is light golden brown colour. Remove from oven and reduce the temperature to 140C/120C fan/gas 1.

Serving suggestions; Fresh berries & vanilla mascarpone cream. Poached rhubarb & crushed gingerbread biscuits

01263 824555 01263 838383 01263 579579

4. Bring the cream, milk, vanilla pod. Beat the egg yolks with the sugar until pale, then pour the hot milk and cream over, beating as you go. Strain custard into a jug, allow to settle for a few mins, then skim off any froth.

5. Carefully pour the custard into the tart case, grate some nutmeg over the top and bake for 40 mins or until just set with the very slightest wobble in the middle. Remove from the oven, trim the pastry edges off (away from the filling), then leave to cool. If putting the tart in the fridge allow to cool completely before hand as it could cause the tart to crack/split.

New exhibition at the Art House CafĂŠ featuring the work of Cromer artist Paul Darley The Art House CafĂŠ is currently showing a selection of work by Cromer artist Paul Darley.

If you live in Cromer or spend much time along the seafront there, you may well spot him painting down by the sea. Working quickly in oils, he captures the changing light, everyday activities of fishermen, holiday makers and locals, as he has done since moving to Cromer in 1989.

Alongside Paul’s work are the expressive oils and watercolours by Suffolk artist Ruth McCabe. Her work picks up the colours, forms and changing seasonal moods of East Anglia’s coastal and agricultural landscapes.

The Art House also stocks a range of glass, ceramics, hand painted silk scarves and jewellery all unique and created by East Anglian artists.

Sandi Starfish returns for the fourth year to help keep children safe this summer

A five armed friend is returning to Norfolk beaches, lending an extra hand to families to help keep their children safe this summer.

Sandi the Starfish was launched in 2014 - with a seafront flag for families to use as a meeting point if they are separated and special Sandi the Starfish wristbands with space to write a parent's mobile number.

Sergeant Tom Stead explained that losing a child, even momentarily, can be a terrifying experience for the whole family.

"The idea of having a flag with a recognisable character as a meeting point for families if one of them gets lost came from PCSO Sandi Greenacre, who was a member of the Hunstanton team before she sadly died in 2013. Sandi saw how distressing losing a child can be – both for the parents and the child. She was keen to develop ways to help families reunite and advice for parents on what to do if they lose their little one.

When visiting the Norfolk coast this summer, keep an eye out for Sandi in Hunstanton, Wells, Sheringham, Cromer, Great Yarmouth and Gorleston. Wristbands are available from a variety of locations within each seaside resort.

Helpful tips for families planning a trip to the beach include:

• Designate a meeting spot and make sure the whole family know to go there to wait there if you are separated.

On 31 May, Charlie Spearman was presented with the Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur medal for his military services during the liberation of France in the Second World War.

Charlie was in the 18th Air Formation Signals. They landed on SWORD beach on D Day +10 near Caen. He was assigned to the American Army as they did not have their own signal unit. He went through France into Germany and up to Frankfurt, arriving two days after the Allies had bombed it. There was only one building left standing – IG Farben factory, so the Signals unit set up their advance post here.

Charlie was then sent back to Reims at the end of April/beginning of May and told to report to the school house, where he was attached to General Eisenhower’s advanced HQ: SHAEF

Expeditionary Force).

Stanmore stated that the surrender in Europe would be announced the following day.

On 7 May there was a meeting consisting of General Eisenhower, General Montgomery, Air Vice Marshall Tedder and the German High Command including Goebbels and Himmler. A senior American officer then brought in a message and gave it to Charlie to send, as he was on duty at that time. Charlie sent the message on the teleprinter to Stanmore in Middlesex at 4.10am BST on 7 May.

Cllr Wyndham Northam, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Financial Services and Revenues and Benefits, said “This is fantastic news and is a reflection of a great deal of hard work put in by the teams responsible for collecting these monies.

“This revenue collected will make a real difference at a time when resources are limited and funding is reduced.” The data has been sent to the Department for Communities and Local Government as required by the Local Government Act 1972. The collection information is due to be brought to Cabinet on 5 June, Scrutiny on 14 June and Full Council on 21 June as part of the Debt Management Annual Report.

Ever thought about gardening with seaweed? By Beckie Grimmer from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners Seaweed fertilisers are deceptively named as they are not true fertilisers; their nutrient content is not standardised. You can purchase dried or liquid seaweed fertilisers from local garden centres, or if you are lucky (and check with your local council/ beach owner) you might have access to fresh seaweed. Here are some possible pros and cons for you to weigh up if you want to consider bringing some seaweedy goodness into your soil: - Alginates in seaweed help to bind the soil together, and it contains a wide range of soil nutrients, including lots of trace elements.

the salt content then rinse it before use, and a good watering or rain on the ground will quickly wash out any remaining salt.

- All products have different nutrient concentrations dependent on how they were processed, so be sure to read the packaging thoroughly. Even then, however, nutrient levels are not guaranteed. - If you have access to fresh seaweed it can be dug in to flower beds without prior decomposition or used as a mulch to suppress weeds and retain water. - Seaweed products are a great source of nutrients for organic gardeners.

- Calcified seaweed can be used as an alternative to lime to increase the alkalinity of your soil, although this is often more expensive and it’s advisable to look at the source of the product to check it is sustainably obtained.

- There is a potential for high salt content in fresh seaweed which won’t be good for your plants, although this should not be a problem with commercial products. If you’re concerned about M CO RE

Case Study: Making a Lasting Power of Attorney after a Diagnosis of Dementia

If you've been diagnosed with dementia, it's a really good idea to make a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) and Will as soon as possible. To highlight the process, we have provided a real life example where an LPA is made following an early diagnosis of dementia to protect a family’s interests and wishes.

Case Study – Michael Michael has recently been diagnosed with dementia. Although he often shows signs of confusion and can be forgetful, his diagnosis is at the initial stage of and is mainly unrecognisable. Michael’s daughter Emily is concerned as Michael does not have an Lasting Power of Attorney in place so no one is able to look after his finances when he is no longer able to.

What can they do? A person who has been diagnosed with dementia is still able to make a Lasting Power of Attorney provided that they have capacity. The two-tier test for capacity was set out in section 2(1) of the Mental Capacity Act 2005:-

• Does the person have an impairment of, or a disturbance in the functioning of, the mind or brain?

• Does the impairment or disturbance mean that the person is unable to make the specific decision at that time that it needs to be made?

Although dementia amounts to the impairment of the brain, if Michael is able to understand the decision to have a Lasting Power of Attorney he can fulfil this test. For the solicitor to confirm that he has capacity they must ensure that:-

Jaymic Systems Ltd

1. Michael understands the information relevant to making a Lasting Power of Attorney

2. Is able to retain this information, and

3. Is able to use and weigh up this in formation as part of the process of making the decision to make an LPA.

Seeing your Solicitor When attending the initial appointment with the solicitor Michael is able to bring Emily with him for support however when taking Michael’s instructions she will have to leave the room to ensure that they are Michael’s instructions and he is not being unduly influenced in any way. During this initial appointment the solicitor will ensure that Michael understands the responsibility that he is giving to his attorneys and when this will come into force. During the appointment the solicitor can assess whether he has capacity to instruct them to make a Lasting Power of Attorney.

If the solicitor is unsure in any way about his capacity they can appoint his GP as certificate provider on the LPA. The role of the certificate provider is to confirm that the person making the LPA understands what they are doing and signs the document to certify this.

Before Michael signs the document he would have to read through the draft document and confirm that this is what he would like to put in place. He would then see the solicitor for another appointment where they would go through the document again with Michael ensuring that he understood it.

Once Michael has signed the LPA, the solicitor will send information to the attorneys on what their responsibilities will be and ask them to sign the LPA. If they have any queries they are then able to contact the solicitor. Registering the document Once the document has been registered with the Office of the Public Guardian the solicitor will provide Michael with 2 certified copies of the LPA which he will be able to give to his attorneys. Emily is therefore assured that when Michael’s dementia worsens he has a Lasting Power of Attorney in place and has the certified copy to take to Michael’s bank to allow her access to his finances.

If you have been diagnosed with Dementia, you may also wish to get advice on writing your will.

St Andrew’s Methodist Church Flower Festival Flower arrangers from towns and villages all over North Norfolk are busily planning for arguably the district’s premier flower festival which takes place at St Andrew’s Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham from Thursday 6 July to Sunday 9 July.

Catering forms a major part of the Festival with light lunches, cream teas and an extensive choice of cakes on offer.

Overall a visit to St Andrew`s Flower Festival is a thoroughly enjoyable way to pass a few hours.

Last year’s Festival

The annual festival, which has been run for over 40 years, is a major event for both the church and the town and regularly attracts around 3000 visitors with several coach parties and many planning their holidays around the festival dates.

Each year the flower arrangers design their floral displays to a specific theme with exceptional attention to detail and creativity. Last year’s theme was “I Am” and this year’s theme is “Music in Bloom”.

Over 25 arrangements will depict this theme with titles such as Swan Lake, Mary Poppins and Country & Western Music. Throughout the Festival background music, played mainly by organists, add to the ambiance of the event.

In addition to being amazed by the floral arrangements, visitors will be ‘I am a Fisherman’ from last able to browse the many stalls offering year’s Festival a superb variety of plants, jigsaws, books, arts & crafts, souvenirs and gifts, jewellery, stained glass art, Christian books, Traidcraft, quality bric-a-brac, a raffle, quality cards and various quizzes. Children’s quiz sheets based on the festival will be available throughout and there will be a children’s activity table (arts and crafts) on the Saturday of the festival.

Entry to the festival is free but donations are gratefully accepted. Proceeds from the festival go to church funds but each year ‘I am the Bread of Life’ from last year’s Festival a sizeable donation is given to a local charity. Last year £1000 was donated to EACH (Quidenham Children’s Hospice) and this year Sheringham Age Concern will be the beneficiary.

The festival will be open from 10am to 5pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 12noon to 5pm on Sunday. The Festival finishes with a Festival Praise service at 5.30pm on the Sunday. The church is wheelchair friendly and has disabled toilet facilities.

Further details of this year`s and historical festivals, where to find us plus much more information can be found on our web site www.sheringhammethodist.org.uk We look forward to extending a warm welcome to visitors to our festival.

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society and orchestra are delighted to be returning to the Auden Theatre, Holt for their Summer Gala Concert on Saturday 15 July at 7.30 pm.

The choir, directed by David Ballard, will perform Joseph Haydn’s lyrical oratorio The Seasons. As the title suggests this exciting work takes us on a journey through the four seasons – Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter – with lively and atmospheric music very much in the style of his earlier, and perhaps better known, oratorio The Creation. The audience will get to experience the changing scene throughout a year in mid-Europe in the early 1800s.

Zaira Palumbo The work will be sung in English – as was the original performance – using the latest libretto which allows Haydn’s original wit, humour and musical genius to shine through. The choir will be joined by 3 splendid soloists: Zaira Palumbo (soprano), Lawrence Thackeray (tenor) and Tom Appleton (bass). Prior to the concert the audience are invited to picnic on the lawns between the Auden Theatre and the new Britten Building. The bar will be open from 6.30 pm.

Lawrence Thackeray Tickets (£15 under 18’s FREE) are available now from the Auden Theatre box office telephone 01263 713444 or online at www.audentheatre.co.uk

HOLT NISSAN DEALERSHIP WINS COVETED GLOBAL AWARD

A YEAR of outstanding sales and customer care has earned a Holt Nissan dealership the coveted Nissan Global Award — the company’s highest worldwide award.

Crayford & Abbs, on Gypsies Lane, was one of just three UK dealerships to win the award.

It is the first time the dealership, which is known for its extensive charity work, has won the prize.

Director Kevin Abbs, who recently was invited to Buckingham Palace for the first Garden Party of the year for his charity work, received the award on behalf of the dealership from Nissan Motor GB’s Managing Director, Alex Smith, last week.

Alex said: “I’m delighted to present this Nissan Global Award 2017 to Crayford and Abbs. It’s the highest honour Nissan gives to its dealer partners around the world and recognises them for delivering a great overall performance and excellent customer service. So few dealers ever win it and so this really does go to show what a fantastic job Kevin and the team at Crayford and Abbs have been doing and they should all feel very proud of this achievement.”

Kevin said: “We always wanted to be the best we could be and have strived to achieve number one status — and it feels fantastic to say we now are! It’s testament to the teamwork of our staff and our brilliantly loyal customer base, and I want to thank them all for making this possible.”

WHO DUNNIT? Coast Arts writer's workshop with LYNNE TRUSS

Writers and would-be writers are invited to a day of inspiration in Beeston Regis on 3 July 10am – 4.30pm

Last year, a group of writers and would-be writers joined Lynne Truss on a writers' workshop in North Norfolk, exploring the intriguing world of pests to understand different points of view in writing.

“It was a fascinating day of writing”, said Lynne. “Not everyone sees the crow as a fiendish and well-organised enemy to mankind, but understanding the crow's motivation - and writing it convincingly – was a way of thinking about a different point of view – a fundamental need for writing fiction.”

By popular demand, Lynne Truss is back in North Norfolk at the invitation of Coast Arts for another workshop. This year's workshop is going to deal with crime writing. “The genre of crime is of course wide-ranging, from classic English puzzles and mysteries to dark Nordic psychological thrillers.” said Katrina Cole who is organising the workshop. “If understanding and writing crime fiction interests you, you'll find Lynne's insight and style fascinating and instructive.” “During the day we'll discuss how to start the construction of a crime story before developing some of the key concepts,” Lynne, patron of Coast Arts, explained, “we'll dissect the concept of why so many crime novels start with a body found beside a canal by a spinsterish woman calling to a dog in the early morning”.

Lynne Truss has extensive experience and success as an author in so many forms of writing, as familiar on the radio as on bookshelves. This is an opportunity not to be missed and is bound to be entertaining. Places are limited so it is recommended to book early - booking and more information: coastarts.co.uk 18

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

When I last spoke to our friend catching the feral cats he advised that the previous week the four that went into the cat traps had already been neutered, easily identified having been ear tipped. He had also managed to catch two more that week and was hopeful that more would be caught soon.

As most of you will be aware, after taking in cats and finding them loving new homes, one of our main aims is to promote neutering. As well as offering vouchers to people on low income and benefit, on receipt of £5 we do still issue the fixed term voucher for other owners who need help with the cost of the operation. The vouchers are always issued direct to the vets concerned and forwarded Sparkle, lovely friendly to our Head Office for payment once the young girl just waiting to operation has taken place. Head Office then be chosen issue cheques on a monthly basis to all the vets concerned and advise us that payment will be taken from our Current Account within a set amount of time. This ensures we know how much will be taken and gives us time to transfer money if we need to do so. Our statement for May indicates that payments totalling roughly £6,000. have been made so far this year. This amount does not include operations taking place in May and any more that are in the pipeline. We urge people to continue to contact our neutering line to find out what help is available to them. As all charities involved in cat rescue are aware, there are already far too many unwanted cats out there, many having been neglected and not receiving the care they deserve. By ensuring there are not so many unwanted cats and kittens, we can all help more of the cats that need help because of changes in their families’ circumstances. Very often the original cats that move to industrial sites have been abandoned/neglected by their owners and, because they have not been neutered, a colony quickly forms and we are left with the problems recently experienced where our friend works.

Plans are now going ahead for the Hog Roast at Dilham, which this year will be held on Sunday 9 July. Tickets are now available and, despite inflation, the price remains the same. If you would like to join us on the day, please call the cat line or send your details via the ‘Contact Form’ on our website. There is a vegetarian option available and the dreaded Car Park Attendant will once again be in attendance (I got caught last year!).

Sporting Centre of Excellence set to enter second year

First year pilot project produced high quality results North Norfolk District Council’s project to create a Sporting Centre of Excellence has been a huge success and is set to enter a second year.

The first year pilot project saw more than 70 young people aged 11 to 14 attending 24 weeks of coaching at Gresham’s School in Holt. They were given specialist coaching across four sports - hockey, netball, cricket and running. The project has been funded by NNDC and supported through the council’s sports and leisure team. It has been hosted by Gresham’s, which has high quality sporting facilities.

Successes included • Nine athletes selected to represent Norfolk in cross country

22

• A haul of medals at the Norfolk Track and Field Championships at the UEA Sportspark recently which included four golds, three silver and two bronze • Three cricketers picked for county squad training sessions • One hockey player spotted as a naturally gifted goalkeeper and invited to join a top Norfolk club • Two netball players invited to join a high standard team All participants showed improvement.

The aim of the project is to recruit young people with the potential to excel in a sport and give them an excellent coaching experience and the opportunity to achieve their sporting dreams.

Cllr Maggie Prior, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said “Year one has been a resounding success both in terms of individual success and in terms of the whole group improving their skills and abilities. The project has demonstrated a great need to deliver high quality sports coaching to the young people of North Norfolk, bridging a gap between participation and performance. Sport England has said the project is innovative and shows good practice, so there is formal recognition from the experts that this is a fantastic scheme.” All of the district’s secondary schools have had representation in the scheme.

If you would like to take part in the selection trials for the coaching sessions, or nominate someone to do so, please contact Wyn Nurse on 01263 516035.

Celebrating Glass at Riverside Art & Glass Wroxham

The Contemporary Glass Society (CGS) Eastern Hub is staging its annual exhibition,

Celebrating Glass at Riverside Art & Glass Wroxham from Wednesday, 14 – 28 June.

The exhibition, featuring the work of 23 professional glass artists, mainly from Norfolk, is open Monday to Saturday, 9.30am to 5.30pm and Sunday,11am to 4pm.

Susan Purser Hope from Cromer, who has been appointed national Chair of CGS as it marks its 20th anniversary in 2017, is celebrating her 10th anniversary as a glass artist. Much of her work has combined art and science, exploring SEM (scanning electron microscopy) images of the interior of the body. Her new work is influenced by Cromer’s end of the pier show, Great Yarmouth’s Hippodrome and Thursford’s rides and organs.

Susan Purser Hope said “For an artist, glass is such a miraculous material with which to create! There is such a wide range of different techniques that can be worked with, resulting in a diversity of finishes, textures and looks. Holding an annual exhibition by glass artists from around the region enables the Contemporary Glass Society to raise both the profile of glass 26

2015

and the work of local glass artists, and to introduce the public to a material that is little understood and appreciated.”

Other local artists include Hazel Millington from Cley, whose work is inspired by the Norfolk coast and countryside, and Morag Reekie from Norwich whose colourful glass sculptures reflect her family life.

David Reekie, from Dickleburgh, who shows his work in Chicago, Hong Kong, France and The Netherlands and most recently at Collect at the Saatchi Galleries, London and Max Lamb and Fiona Wilkes from SALT glass studios, Burnham Thorpe, whose work has been exhibited at the British Glass Biennale, Tate Modern and London Craft Week are also featured in the exhibition.

Riverside Art & Glass, 24 Norwich Road, Wroxham NR12 8RX is opposite Broads Tours, just before Wroxham Bridge, 01603 784000, www.riversideartandglass.co.uk. Contemporary Glass Society www.cgs.org.uk

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club

against Swanton Abbott BC, which resulted in a win for Cromer, away against Weybourne which saw another win and a wonderful weekend entertaining Rushymead BC from Leicester have also been played. The Rushymead game resulted in a draw with both sides having scored 86 shots. The day before a good number of the Rushymead team used the Marrams green for a roll – up as their game against another local club had unfortunately been cancelled. The sun shined, the club bar facilities were also well used! New member Derek has been trying out a set of coloured bowls. Vice-Captain Steve has bought himself a bicycle partly to keep fit but also so that he can get home after a drink at the bar. That’s an excellent decision but…..he live at the top of a hill! Ah well may improve his fitness.

Tales from the Bowling Green ...

And the weather has really been hot sunny bowling weather. The Hansells League team which plays on Wednesday evenings, despite some very close matches, just does not seem able to obtain that first win of the season. At home against Lakeside Pilgrims the shots scored by each side was the same and as a result the team lost 2 – 3. The following week against a strong R G Carter side Cromer did their best but were well beaten 0 – 5. The Federation team away in Kings Lynn against Wootton Park lost 0 – 9. The following week however at home against Wells Elsmith the result was a complete reversal with a 9 – 0 win. The NANSA league team has only played one game in the last 2 weeks and that was a home game against Southrepps which was won 6 – 2. The Lord Fermoy game against R G Carter BC also ended in defeat with the home rink losing by 6 shots and the away rink losing by 7 shots. I also got the date of the Jermy Cup game against County Arts wrong, sorry. It will have been played next time round however. We are however looking forward to the Bales Cup, the Norfolk County Club Competition game, against Reepham Nomads when we hope for a better outcome than the Fermoy Cup competition game. Friendly games
