Memorial Angling Match raises money for Cromer RNLI

The last Wednesday in April 2017 saw a fishing match at Reepham Fisheries to raise money in memory of Jim Randell.

Over 65 people attended to fish against each other to net the heaviest catch. Jim had been a keen angler as well as a supporter of the RNLI and his family decided the competition would raise money to support two causes – that of the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital Critical care unit and Cromer RNLI. Reepham Fisheries gave access to the lakes for the day and each person who took part in the competition paid £10, with half being the ticket price and the other for a raffle ticket. Mrs Barbara Randell visited Cromer RNLI to donate £551, being half the total raised, which will go towards the general running costs of the station. Paul Watling, Cromer RNLI station mechanic, received the cheque with many thanks and said a plaque will be put on the wall in the station entrance with Jim’s details on it. Paul said ‘With the wonderful support of families and their donations, the RNLI are able to maintain the 24 hour cover to all who need it’.

The next item she found was her thimble - a large one filled with hosta leaves lisianthus, purple and white anthuriums and sweet smelling stocks. She also found some wool in there, which resulted in chrysanths and white avalanche white roses.

The now empty basket hosted a beautiful arrangement of hosta leaves, blue hydrangeas, yellow lilies, cornflowers and lemon roses. The vote of thanks was given by Gill Breeze. Our competition best in show was won by Pearl Self. The subject was patchwork and we were treated to lovely design in squares of sweet williams, roses and pinks enclosed in different foliages. The meeting next month at Cromer Primary School is a demonstration by Anne Colby on ‘Come Dine with Me’ on 17 July at 7.20pm.

North Norfolk District Council working with local businesses to crush litter environment by contributing to these new solar bins.” been a change in take-away packaging that has led in Cromer and Wells

Solar smart ‘Big Belly’ bins to help at litter hotspots Twelve revolutionary bins are being installed by North Norfolk District Council in Cromer and Wells to reduce litter overspill during busy times.

The ‘smart’ solar-powered litter bins are larger than a traditional street bin and when litter reaches a certain level inside, or at pre-programmed intervals, a hydraulic ram compacts the litter so levels do not overflow.

Restaurant businesses that create high volumes of packaging waste are contributing funds to the NNDC project, including Cromer’s No 1 and Platten’s and French’s fish and chip shops in Wells.

The new Big Belly bins can take approximately eight times as much litter as a traditional street bin and are powered by a solar panel fixed to the top of the bin, using sunlight to charge the internal battery. The sealed bins cannot be accessed by vermin such as rats or birds, and Council Officers can monitor contents levels or check when the bins have been emptied using an online system.

Marcus French, of French’s Fish and Chips, said “As a take-away fish and chip shop we understand we share some responsibility for the packaging overflowing out of bins near our restaurant in Wells. We are pleased to be able to show the community we care about our town and the local

Philip Platten, of Platten’s Fish and Chips, said “We’re really pleased to be working with North Norfolk District Council to keep our community cleaner and tidier and we know residents and visitors will appreciate the results.”

North Norfolk District Council is in talks with other restaurant outlets to assess further opportunities for funding.

At a Cabinet meeting in June it was decided to start a formal procurement process for a new Waste and Related Services contract when the present contract with Kier Environmental Services ends in 2019. It is hoped this process can be done in partnership with other local authorities in Norfolk in order to improve value and quality of service. NNDC is looking to ensure that more smart technology such as the solar powered compactor bins is able, to be integrated into any new waste contract.

Cllr Annie Claussen-Reynolds, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for the Environment, said “Putting smart technology to work to help protect the environment is smart in itself. During the trial period these bins showed they could reduce litter overspill and therefore the amount of litter being blown around our streets. This then has a knock-on into saving money on the number of visits our contractors have to do to empty the bins.

“It is great we are working with local restaurant businesses to finance the solar bins project as it has

Marie Curie is looking for volunteers in Cromer and Sheringham Marie Curie is looking for volunteers in Cromer and Sheringham to help with the distribution and return of our collection tins/Daffodil Boxes from establishments such as pubs, cafes, restaurants, shops and hairdressers. There are 48 Marie Curie Nurses in Norfolk, providing care and support in the local community; they could be caring for someone next door to you.

This volunteer position is extremely rewarding and does not need a lot of your time! It includes approaching businesses, many of whom have already had a connection with Marie Curie but also speaking to new ones, you will need to change over collection tins/Daffodil Boxes, count and bank the money at a NatWest bank or Post Office.

Marie Curie Nurses support patients, with a terminal illness in the comfort of their homes, and specialise in end of life care. This service is free and can be accessed via your district nurse.

A vision for the future public consultation launches

Last month a public consultation regarding the proposed vision of care for patients in North Norfolk and rural Broadland was launched.

The consultation suggests options for patient facilities at Benjamin Court in Cromer and the development of a new Supported Care Service.

A New and Vibrant Future for Benjamin Court Healthcare Unit - A Resource for Everyone in North Norfolk and rural Broadland proposes changes which would, if adopted, provide a health and community support hub comprising different types of beds and non-bed based NHS and voluntary sector services. A centre where people are given safe, high quality, person centred care, whatever the focus. This could include: ■ supporting patients and their family and carers to have the most comfortable and dignified end of life care ■ helping people achieve the best quality of life ■ helping people to remain living independently ■ an advice and support hub that brings together the best of our local healthcare and wellbeing organisations under one roof

The consultation is being run by NHS North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group (NHS North Norfolk CCG) and follows considerable engagement with a steering group, Cromer Town Council and other local people. It is about deciding on the services which can be delivered at the units providing good practice with patients’ needs at the heart of the decision and the best use of finite NHS resources. The consultation document has now been published and is available on the CCG’s website. The document will be distributed widely across North Norfolk and rural Broadland.

An event where the public can have a say on the proposal will be hosted in Cromer during the consultation period with the exact date, time and location to be published in due course. Dr Anoop Dhesi, chair of North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group and a GP at Staithe Surgery Stalham, said; “As a CCG our primary aim is to deliver the services our patients need in North Norfolk at the locations best for them. With an ageing population, we have to look at our current and future provisions to ensure what we provide meets their needs and makes the best use of NHS resources.

and elsewhere in North Norfolk, Norfolk County Council, Cromer Town Council, Hospital Friends and members of Patient Participation Groups (PPGs) linked to local GP surgeries.

Antek Lejk, Chief Operating Officer for North Norfolk CCG added: “We have made proposals for the future of Benjamin Court which we think are exciting and realistic. It is now time for people to have their say. We want to listen to people’s opinions to help us make the right decision for Benjamin Court and for the people of North Norfolk.”

“Bed-based care will always be available for people who need to be in a hospital but we need to make sure the alternative of home-based care is always considered. Too many people are currently in hospitals that don’t need to be there receiving care that could be carried out elsewhere or even in a more familiar environment such as their home.”

In comparison to ten other CCGs in England that have a similar population to North Norfolk, the CCG has more intermediate care beds than most, at 73. The average of the other CCGs is 60 beds, however in many of these CCGs the beds are used specifically for additional purposes, for example specific palliative care beds or stroke rehabilitation.

The Supported Care Model being proposed has been tested during eight clinically-led audits in conjunction with Norfolk Community Health and Care (NCH&C). When looking at how to best meet the needs of the patients, the audit identified that the largest group of inpatients (46%- 48%) could have been able to go home with a physiotherapy or occupational therapy assessment and care package in place, if that was an option.

The consultation proposal has been developed based on the input of previous engagement. NN CCG has been working with their Community Engagement Panel (CEP), made up of local patient, carer and stakeholder representatives, since April 2016 on the development of Supported Care.

The CCG also set up a specific steering group to discuss the use of Benjamin Court going forward. The steering group comprises of representatives from Norfolk Community Health and Care (NCH&C), Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital (NNUH), clinicians working in the unit, GPs in Cromer

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club Lions International Centenary

Jenny Lind Sensory Room Appeal 2017 is the Centenary Year for all Lions and we were asked to do something special to celebrate 100 years of helping others worldwide. Along with 10 other Norfolk Lions Clubs, our Club decided at the end of last year to do a ‘Pub Dash’ to raise funds for the above appeal which we hoped, together with a very successful street collection for Jenny Lind, would raise £1,000.

We did this and on 24 May this year three members of our Club, together with members of the other 10 clubs involved, visited the Jenny Lind Hospital to see the sensory equipment and to meet the Senior Paediatrician and Senior Nursing Sister for a formal handover plus tea and a specially made ‘Thank You’ cake.

We had a fantastic two and a half hours at the hospital to try out the equipment, including a portable ‘wagon’ which could be taken onto the ward for very sick or immobile children to use the sensory equipment with them. I can do no better than to copy the explanation from Steve, the qualified Play Therapist, to illustrate the difference this £8,500 has made to patients, both babies, children and occasionally even older men or women.

Adolescent Room/Therapy Room At its most basic, the room can be used as a place to remove the patient from the ward environment, ie the constant background noise and light. This

will be especially beneficial to our long term babies, some of whom can be here for months or longer.

The room can be used for patients with complex/ additional needs; with the mats on the floor this gives them somewhere to relax that is not their bed or wheelchair. We can also use the room for patients that are anxious prior to going to theatre or before/ after undergoing a procedure. And of course, adolescents may just use the room as it is or choose to use some of the therapeutic equipment. How can we use the equipment? Each session can be aimed at achieving different results. So for instance, if we have a young person with autism, the room can be set up with sedate lighting, possibly some aromatherapy and

minimal noise. The important aspect is that they have control over how much stimulus.

We can use the room and the equipment to work on one particular area of a child’s development, but also to introduce our patients to a positive sensory input.

Sadly, too much of a child’s stay in hospital revolves around negative/unpleasant contact, blood tests and cannulation probably being top of the dislikes. In the therapy room we can work to counterbalance that with positive, pleasurable stimuli.

Lastly, since starting this project I have been talking to many people and explaining what the therapy room will be and how it was achieved. The families of our patients, past and present, would like me to pass on how grateful and moved they are by what you have done for us, and I feel confident in saying my colleagues all feel the same way. So a really BIG THANKS Steve The ward has a plaque outside the door of the Sensory Room and also a small one on the ‘wagon’ to acknowledge Lions’ help.

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

Newsflash – Grenfell Tower Fire Victims and Survivors

On 17 June Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club held street collections in Holt, Sheringham and Cromer. Seven members raised £1000 in their buckets – well done! Also a very big thank you to everyone who contributed what they could to our buckets. We are so grateful for your generosity. On another subject, we were very pleased to induct Tim Adams, last year’s Mayor of Cromer as a full member of our Club. John Frosdick, this year’s Mayor became a new Honorary Member. WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2017? 20 17 ?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2017 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

It’s Showtime ‌

Red Loft Theatre Company in collaboration with the Coronation Hall are bringing a week of live music and theatre to Mundesley this August.

The programme comprises three different unmissable shows over six nights. Whether you prefer to watch a series of Musical Showstoppers with songs from famous West End productions, travel back in time and sing your heart out with the 40s Show, or kick back and enjoy The Easy Showcase with a live band and singers, you will have a night to remember!

Red Loft’s NODA nominated director, Tracey Loftus is thrilled to be launching her new company in her old stomping ground of Mundesley and is delighted to be working with such a talented and dedicated team. Amongst the performers is celebrated soprano Zaira Palumbo whose recent credits include supporting the Royal Philharmonic at Taverham Hall and performing at the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen. In addition to appearing in all three shows, she is taking on the role of Musical Director and has been splitting her time between rehearsals in Norfolk, her private pupils and her studies at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London.

Following recent successes at The Thursford Spectacular and Cromer Pier, Norfolk singer Eddie Bushell has found time to join the company in between his busy schedule with band ‘The Base Notes’. Keeping it local, Mundesley’s very own Lord of Cabaret, Pat Nearney, will be performing his hilarious ‘Cheeky Chappie' tribute to Max Miller in the 40s Show.

The audience will experience a cabaret environment with seating around tables in a relaxed atmosphere with a licensed bar available. All shows will have live music with professional musician and teacher Steve Fordington at the helm.

The shows run from 5 - 12 August with tickets costing ÂŁ15 including supper. For more information or to book see the website www.redlofttheatre.com Telephone booking via Ticketsource on 0333 666 3366 (charged at ÂŁ1.50 per booking)

Beautiful Eyes at Coltishall Clinic

Do your eyes give your age away? Erase signs of ageing, safely and quickly. Latest treatments at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic.

Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM Medical director and laser surgeon at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic explains.

Effects of ageing skin gradually creep up. You feel good but the mirror tells a different story! Women and men believe the body part that most reveals their age is the eye area, followed by hands and facial skin. They want simple aesthetic solutions that help them look as good as they feel and minimise the early signs of sun damage. One in three want to erase their skin’s fine lines and wrinkles.

OK, you have tried botox but it can only do so much. Although it is a wonderful tool in experienced hands, it is not going to address all the changes that occur with ageing. So what are the effects of ageing that need to be addressed? There are three main changes that occur with ageing. Loss of volume, loss of skin elasticity causing sagging skin and sun damage that affects the skin quality. In addition to these changes, wrinkles form because of repetitive movements of the frowning and smiling muscles.

How can we help you reduce first signs of ageing around the eye area? Essentially we can address all three elements of ageing resulting in total rejuvenation. When you address all elements of age-related changes you produce natural looking results. Careful use of botox and fillers or fat injection can restore volume reduce dynamic wrinkles formed by muscle over activity. Another revolutionary technique has been tear trough rejuvenation with hyaluronic acid fillers such as restylane. New injection methods now allow us to achieve excellent results without any bruising or downtime. Fat injections are also making a comeback and fat is an excellent filler to provide volume even in eyebrows and temporal hollows. It is especially attractive for patients who are considering liposuction. Suctioned fat can be used to provide a volumetric lift to facial areas or for the whole face. We can use lasers to create a new skin and reduce and reverse sun damage. This is only possible with a laser treatment or deep chemical peels. We do not recommend deep chemical peels around the eye area because chemicals can be difficult to control. Lasers however are very precise and can work in a very predictable manner. Finally if required we can use surgery to lift the brows or remove excess eyelid skin. How do you perform eyelid skin tightening or skin removal to address more advanced changes of skin ageing? Eyelid skin tightening remains a very popular procedure. Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures worldwide. Ageing changes in this area are almost universal. Gravity and sun damage takes its toll along with genetics and ageing. There are changes with drooping of the eyebrows along with laxity of the thin eyelid skin.

How is laser eyelid surgery different from traditional eyelid surgery? The traditional blepharoplasty is a more invasive procedure with considerable recovery period and often involves overnight hospital stay. It also often involves removal of muscle layer and fat from around the eyeball. More invasive a procedure, longer is the list of potential complications. Also too much fat removal can lead to a hollowed out artificial or operated upon look. What are the advantages of our blepharoplasty technique? With our technique the procedure is performed under pure local anaesthesia. We have also learned that fat removal is to be avoided unless there is obvious prolapse or bulging of the fat pads. This provides a natural look. Use of local anaesthesia allows a quick recovery whilst use of the laser reduces bleeding allowing a much faster recovery and minimal bruising. Although the scar is very fine and placed in a natural eyelid crease, we can also use the laser a few weeks after the procedure to further improve the surgical scar if required. Cromer Pier Show 2017 - celebrating 40 years of first class variety from one of the UK’s most famous pier theatres

Back for another recording-breaking 40th year, Cromer Pier Show is now the only ‘end-of-the-pier’ summer variety show in the world and, if advance bookings are anything to go by, this year will see a high demand for tickets.

Returning, as top of the bill for a second year is comedian Phil Butler, who also appeared in the 1998 and 1999 shows. Phil is truly a comedy act like no other, using his razor sharp wit to inject his hilarious take on entertainment. His stage skills include magic, juggling and ventriloquism which, added to his wealth of experience, has made Phil a hit at both mainstream and alternative venues.

Also returning for a second summer season is Australia’s favourite comedy juggler, James Bustar. James appeared on Australia’s Got Talent and is now a headline act at performances and festivals across the globe. James may be the man that brings the laughter, but when it comes to performing, his dedication is no laughing matter! James has taken the business of laughter seriously, and has graduated from the World Renowned Flying Fruit Fly Circus. He can legitimately claim that he is one of Australia’s most talented and skilful jugglers. James has not revealed what he will be performing in this years show but one thing is certain it will be a mixture of daredevil and funny.

Making his first appearance at the Pavilion Theatre is comedian Joey Howard, one of the most enduring and versatile performers, whose oneman show includes comedy sketches, musical routines and impressions. Joey specialises in observational comedy and mimicry, his show having been described as “a melodic multitude of madness and mirth”.

He is looking forward to this his first year in Cromer and performing on one of the most famous stages in the UK and working with Phil and the rest of the cast.

Making a welcome return for a second summer season is female lead vocalist Emily Yarrow.

Male lead vocalist Lee Bright is making his first appearance in the Cromer Pier but is no stranger to Norfolk having appeared in the Thursford Christmas Spectacular. Lee is excited about his first summer season in Cromer and being part of such a famous show.

No variety show would be complete without its dancers and Cromer Pier Show is no exception. The Seaside Special Dancers will be working as hard as ever and displaying their talents in all forms of dance from tap to ballet. Add to this fabulous mix of talent, colourful costumes, stunning sets, lights and music, and you have a show to remember – the FAMOUS Cromer Pier Show.

The very talented and experienced Di Cooke returns for another year as devisor, director and choreographer, bringing her wealth of experience to a show that is now recognised nationally as an ‘incubator’ for talent, with many of today’s stars having trod the boards of the famous Pavilion Theatre, including Bradley Walsh, 2013 Britain’s Got Talent finalist ventriloquist Steve Hewlett and 2014 BGT finalist comedy impressionist Danny Posthill. Di is not giving much away about this year’s show, except to say that it will be a celebration of 40 years of what is now the only ‘end-of-thepier’ summer variety show in the world and, as such, will give audiences an ‘all round variety show experience’.

Cromer Junior School pupils ‘Put it on a Page’

Monday 26 June saw the presentation of prizes for each year group in the first annual Cromer Junior School writing competition called ‘Put it on a Page’, generously sponsored by Jarrolds of Cromer.

The children were invited write a story or an information piece in any style, as long as it involved something to do with their town and could fit on one side of A4 paper.

There were exciting tales of sea rescues, touching family stories, school-based adventures and fact files about local sites of interest. Drawings and photographs enhanced presentation and the judges were impressed with the effort the pupils had gone to, especially as the work was mostly completed in their own time. Each year group winner received a £10 voucher to spend in Jarrolds, with runner-up prizes supplied by school staff.

Winners were Luke Bailey (Year 6), Elena Inacio (Year 5), Eloise Burch (Year 4) and Molly Gosden (Year 3) – not all of the winners were available photographs. Cromer Times 521 July 8th 2017 16

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We recently had a call from a concerned cat lover about a little cat which she believed could possibly be a stray as it was spending so much time in her garden. Although she had contacted close neighbours and put posters up she had not been able to find out who the owner was.

Because in law the cat is regarded as a person’s property it is essential that all efforts are made to establish whether or not the cat does have an owner. In these instances we always ask the person to put paper collars with a contact telephone number on the cat. Within two hours the owner had been in contact and was able to reassure the lady that the cat had not been abandoned and had a home. Apparently, like so many cats, this little girl had been visiting several houses for a snack which explained her increasing girth. She had also been enjoying a saucer of milk, which because most cats are lactose intolerant, can give them diarrhoea. A nice bowl of water is a better option (and this applies also to hedgehogs, should you have any in your garden). We also get calls from people whose companion is missing, which is a very distressing time for them. Fortunately many of these do turn up and they may have been shut in a garage or shed. When this happens it is important to contact your neighbours and ask them to check. A call to the vets advising them your pet is lost and giving them details of the animal concerned is also a good idea. Sharing the information on Facebook can also help to reunite a pet with its owner. We also advise

Plants for Pooches

Now that the warmer weather is here and we turn our attention to planting up our pots and baskets, give a thought to your dog and what your garden can do for them. Creating a sensory garden for your dog is something every owner can do - it can be as simple as a few flower pots and can be as rewarding for you as it is for them. Planting carefully selected medicinal plants is based upon the practice of Zoopharmacognosy - the process where animals self-medicate using their sense of smell which is influenced by their physiological and psychological needs. It sounds complicated but the theory is quite simple and there’s a wealth of information avail-

people to register the loss on Animal Search UK’s website (a link to which can be found on the Lost and Found page on our website. We saw an instance of how well this can work recently (and in cases like this we would not suggest going down the paper collar route).

We were contacted one Sunday evening by someone concerned about an elderly cat which had turned up in their garden which they thought required medical attention. We Tootsie, a lovely 3 year agreed to cover the cost of initial treatment in the hope that old female, happy to the owner could be found and he was taken to Westover that live with children and night for Chris to treat. Tests were undertaken but in the dogs but not other cats meantime I had looked on the said website and saw a cat listed there as lost which fitted the description. Contact was made with the family who had recently moved house and who were delighted to have their cat back home.

We were horrified to find a stranded school bus in the middle of the road and its frantic driver phoning for help. All traffic manoeuvred its cautious way around it and our excellent driver was unfazed by the obstacle. We climbed aboard a little further down the street and he reversed expertly round a tight corner to a round of applause! Then we were off, collecting four more of our friends in Trunch on the way. We arrived in Horning at 12.30pm, in good time for an exploratory wander around the pretty village and its interesting shops, a lovely lunch in the place of our choice - many of them with gardens looking out on to the water - to meet at 2.30pm by the dock for the Southern Comfort Mississippi paddle boat.

The boat trip was magical with the strong sun gleaming on the water and the reeds alongside, highlighting the beautiful waterside homes, many thatched with those same reeds. We had an hour and a half of peaceful meandering through the shining waterways before returning to Horning and our coach. We had invited our Sanders driver to join us on the boat, which he did with delight. Our journey home was gentle and uneventful - no more stranded buses! Please join us at our next meeting if you would like to try us out. We are a friendly group and everyone is welcome. On 12 July Age UK will be coming to tell us the wide range of ways they can help us. The meeting will start as usual at 2.00 pm in the Sports Pavilion in Overstrand and visitors are charged just £2 at the door. This includes light refreshments. Raffle tickets are always available separately at every meeting. We hope to see you there.

Cromer WI

Our meeting was a week late this month due to the General Election and we still had 52 members who attended.

We started the meeting with a minutes silence for ex member Audrey Told who recently passed away. Audrey was a member up until this last year when illness meant she could not rejoin. Our speaker was Roger Jones who is a volunteer with the Norfolk Wildlife Trust (NWT). He told us how the Trust first started when a group purchased some land at Clay in 1926. The cost was £5000 for 435 acres but then in 2012 when they purchased a further 130 acres, the cost had risen so much it cost £1 million.

The NWT was the first Wildlife Trust in the country. He explained how the Trust looks after the land and also the habitat that exists there. He gave his talk whilst showing some wonderful pictures of wildlife including birds, mammals and flowers. Hickling Broad is the largest reserve of the 38 that they own and has recently been equipped with a new Visitors Centre.

After tea, members were reminded of the Strawberry Tea and the open top bus ride in Norwich next month. All profits from the Strawberry Tea will be donated to the Dementia Unit at Halsey House. The new groups for sewing, reading and walking are all now up and running. The competition was won by Sue Stoneman with Elaine Spittles second and Rosie Evens third.

July is our birthday month and Cromer WI will be 80 years old. We will be having a special birthday cake at the meeting and later in the month we will be celebrating in the Parish Hall with refreshments and a speaker.

18

New members and visitors are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

No Second Bite of the Cherry

Defending your money from the ‘Ex’ if you die By Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr Back in the 1990s I made a Will for a feisty professional woman who left the following unforgettable bequest to her ex-husband: ‘a bottle of gin, a bottle of whisky and a tin whistle, so he can whistle for any more’.

When couples divorce it is standard practice that their rights to claim against each other’s estate under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975 are excluded, so that they cannot come back for a second bite of the cherry, if the ex-spouse dies. Even so, there are still ways that an ‘ex’ (or your child’s ‘ex’) might get at your money through the ‘back-door’.

A major area of concern is provision by your Will for children or grandchildren who are approaching adulthood, but who are not yet financially mature or who might be subject to pressure or undue influence (perhaps by their surviving parent, i.e. your ex-spouse or ex-son/daughter-in-law). I have seen cases where the child, having received assets from their late parent is then subjected to heavy-handed ‘guidance’ from their surviving parent, who then manipulates their newly-bereaved and vulnerable child so as to gain control of the young adult’s inheritance. The intended inheritance could

Your legal matters in safe hands Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of legal matters with care and professionalism.

then be spent on bolstering the ex’s lifestyle rather than being a nest-egg for the young adult.

This can be guarded against by creating a discretionary trust in your Will so that, although the young adult has the benefit of the money, the control of the funds is only handed over once the young adult shows financial maturity and sufficient independence of thought, perhaps on getting their first job and looking to use their inheritance to buy their first home. The reasons for deciding to put in place such arrangements should be carefully documented in a professionally-drawn Letter of Direction, (sometimes called a Letter of Wishes) backed up by thorough file notes (which can remain confidential, unless required), following a consultation with an experienced qualified lawyer.

If you are divorced or separated and want to give assets to an adult child, have you thought about what would happen to that gift, if your child were to die? The gift would not come back to you or your family. If the child is adult, unmarried and has no children, then the intestacy rules will divide their estate equally between your child’s parents: i.e. half to you and half to the ‘ex’. To protect your gift, you could in your lifetime create a trust for your child or lend your child the funds, evidenced

by a formal Promissory Note. Another route is to encourage your child to make a Will so as give the assets back to you or to a sibling. The same applies to a gift to a grandchild whose parents are divorced, and where the young adult has not yet gained the financial knowledge and independence to manage their funds. This is especially so if you also lack confidence in the ex-son/daughter-in-law’s financial competence or motives.

Large role for small schoolgirl

A tiny leading lady takes to the stage in July when The Mundesley Players start their musical comedy run of ‘The Pirates of Pen’s Aunts’ at the Coronation Hall, Mundesley. Twelve year old Una Laurence from Cromer plays the main roll of Penelope and stands just 4ft 7in tall. Yet she holds her ground against her huge and evil nemesis Captain Throttle, played by 6ft 3in Gerry Robbins.

Una, who attends Cromer Academy, was chosen for this pivotal roll even though she had never had a speaking part in any play before. She performed as a fairy in her school’s production of Peter Pan Junior but was mainly in the background. To suddenly be thrust into the limelight in an adult production is very daunting. “It’s really fun,” said Una. “A bit of a change from my first school’s nativity play.”

www.yappersandbarkersonline.co.uk email: yappers@btinternet.com facebook.com/yappersandbarkersonline

Cheryl Collings, who is directing the production said that Una was the best choice to play the leading part of Pen. “She came over really strong and positive in the auditions. Una also Gerry Robins as Captain has a lovely singing Throttle – Una Laurence as voice and due to her Penelope (Pen). size, was a natural foil against the tall and scary pirate Captain Throttle. I think we will see great thing from her in the future.” ‘The Pirates of Pen’s Aunts’ is the musical

swashbuckling adventure of a young girl who discovers that her two favourite aunts are third generation pirates. This means that her own mother is of pirate decent. Yet when Pen asks about it, her mother denies it strongly. Pen and her slightly worried sister Norma set out to find the truth. They sign up to sail as part of the crew of the pirate ship The Devil’s Pea and meet a band of pirates led by the overbearing Captain Throttle. Plank walking, keel hauling and long distance spitting in the boys toilets are all part of the rollicking adventure. Plus no modern pirate show would be complete without a secret treasure map, a near shipwreck and a dead parrot.

‘The Pirates of Pen’s Aunts’ runs for five days at the Coronation Hall Mundesley from Tuesday 25 until Saturday 29 July. Tickets cost £8 for adults and £4 for children and are available from Jupe (fashions) in Station Road Mundesley.

3,000 square feet of high quality displays. Catering for all tastes and budgets. Suppliers of quality kitchen, bathroom equipment and ceramic tiles. We offer a ‘whole house’ package, from our free, no obligation design and quotation service, through to installation. A one stop shop for peace of mind. Rabbit and Guinea Pig Awareness at Toll Barn Vets

Our annual Rabbit Awareness Week arrived at Toll Barn Vets last week and we were delighted to see so many lovely rabbits for their free health checks and goody bags. As one of only 3 accredited Rabbit Friendly Practices within Norfolk we are keen to offer the best care possible for Britain’s third most popular pet.

As more is discovered about rabbit behaviour, attitudes have started to change with regards to rabbit husbandry and welfare. Rabbits are social creatures and in the wild live within complex social structures and pet rabbits benefit from living with a rabbit friend as they will play, groom, and comfort each other just like cats and dogs.

It is advisable to neuter all rabbits as it not only stops unwanted pregnancies but also has significant health and behaviour benefits. Rabbits also need yearly vaccines against fatal diseases such as myxomatosis and VHD (viral haemorrhagic disease). There is also a new vaccine available at Toll Barn vets against VHD2 (a new strain of VHD). Rabbit’s teeth grow continually (an average of 1cm a month!) and so we advise regular check-ups to spot signs of dental disease early. This is why diet and enrichment are so important.

Rabbits can live up to 10 years and following the excellent response to rabbit awareness week Toll Barn Vets are extending our rabbit and guinea pig friendly clinics. This means we can offer free of charge clinics with our qualified veterinary nurses throughout your pets’ life so we can detect signs of ill health early, offer the best advice about preventative healthcare such as vaccinations and parasite treatment and also help with any behaviour problems you may encounter. We can also microchip your rabbit to help a safe return should he or she wonder off! With the right care and love rabbits and guinea pigs make fantastic companions, each with their own personalities so if you would like us to help care for your rabbit companion please give us a call on 01692 407126.

Challenge 23 – sign up or come and try out! Annual week-long games and sports event aimed at 6 to 14 year olds

The summer holidays are on their way – what are you going to do with your time?

A full week of active, healthy fun will be on offer this summer for young people who sign up to Challenge 23.

Challenge 23 is an action packed week of sporting activity for children aged six to 14, based at Stalham Sports Centre.

For the 23rd year this summer North Norfolk District Council’s expert coaches will create a whole week of fun games, sports and activities, in the form of the ever popular Challenge Week.

Challenge 23 kicks off on Monday, 7 August and runs every day until Friday, 10 August. It costs £90 per head.

The week combines a safe and welcoming environment, the chance to make friends, excellent coaching and lots of opportunities for adventure. Days run from 9am to 3pm, except for Friday which is 8am to 5pm.

Friday will include a trip to the Horstead Centre and include canoeing, crate stack, tower experience and team challenges. This will be followed by an end of week presentation back at the sports centre and a party for everyone to enjoy.

Cllr Maggie Prior, Cabinet Member for Leisure Health and Wellbeing, said “Challenge Week is a fabulous, excellent value opportunity to take exercise all week, trying out different sports, games and activities, while having a thoroughly enjoyable and fulfilling experience. It’s delivered by our highly talented staff who know how to combine learning new skills with lots of fun.”

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

For further information, there is a dedicated Challenge 23 event page on Facebook, visit www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/book, call 01692 580864 or email john.hall-galley@north-norfolk.gov.uk.

There is a Challenge 23 Open Day in advance of the full event where you can come and meet the team, learn all about Challenge, ask questions, sign up and try out lots of activities for free. This will be held on 16 July from 10am to 2pm, at Stalham Sports Centre.

fact on one occasion Jackie, Jack, Tall Neil, James and Gary were all on the green displaying their legs in varying types of shorts. No dress code on our green, except of course for matches.

Tales from the Bowling Green ...

... and the green is playing very well thanks to Neil and Bob giving regulars drenching from the sprinklers. It looks a little brown in parts but my word isn’t it bowling well. Much to the surprise of many visitors I can say. Jack or first bowl often straight into the ditch at the far end of the green. The Hansells team is still not providing the results that the players are capable of. At Fakenham the team lost 1 – 4. The following week however saw that long awaited first win when County Arts ’B’ were well beaten 4 – 1. However, the next game away to Reepham Nomads saw the team lose 1 – 4. This was ironical really because only five days previously, admittedly at home, Cromer had beaten the Nomads 64 – 60 in the Norfolk County Bales Cup Competition to progress to the next round. They will now be playing away at Swaffham on 14 July.

The Club has also played the County mixed team Jermy Cup competition in Norwich at County Arts BC. All three rinks of the home side proved just too strong for Cromer so we exited the competition for this year. The first game for the Federation team in this period should have been at Fakenham Town but had to be postponed as their green was waterlogged. That was the Tuesday when it rained nearly all day, so the decision was not really surprising. At home against Whissonsett the following week the team lost 2 – 7 against a strong team. However undeterred against Holt Tawny Owls the next week saw an excellent 9 – 0 win. The NANSA team travelled to Sheringham Morley Panthers and claimed a very good 6 – 2 win. This was followed by a trip to Cawston where the green beat at least one triple and the result was a 2 – 6 loss.

The weather has been kind to us and it has been good to see so many rinks being used for ‘roll ups’ and Club competitions in the mornings. In

One Friday evening when the Club is open for the occasional social drink, Chrissy had a list of cryptic clues to films and shows – this caused quite a lot of fun and laughter and Keith was most impressed with his own cryptic knowledge of films. Every one put in their contribution. Our Ladies had a friendly match against the ladies from Thorpe Recreation BC. This was followed by a buffet, excellent of course because it was provided by our ladies themselves. We entertained Longthorpe BC from Peterborough. For this game, which has now been played for something like 12 years - there is some dispute as to when it started - we play for a trophy. It is in the form of a Cromer Crab. This year Cromer came out on top by 112 shots to 106. This is the first time for some years so the team were well satisfied.

Green will be closed from Monday 10 to Friday 14 July inclusive

I list below our forthcoming ‘Home’ fixtures that will still be played that you may wish to come along, watch and enjoy.

The following week Northamptonshire BBOB BC visited from their hotel in Great Yarmouth where they have been staying during their tour in Norfolk. This was another very close match which again Cromer just managed to win 102 shots to 98. The last visitors in this period were Houghton on the Hill BC from Leicestershire. They come every year for the weekend and thoroughly enjoy the North Norfolk coast and the bowls that go with it. Again Cromer were successful 93 shots to 73. Houghton will be back next year to gain revenge. Due to some essential work on the green itself the Bowling
