Gregory says: “I am thrilled to be joining this wonderful museum. It really is a tremendous honour to be leading the team here. We have over 1000 world class exhibits and the fact that the museum is housed on the original site gives it an authenticity and unique quality that some museums can only dream of. One of the first challenges is to try and open our doors on additional days so that even more people can visit. Currently, we open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and the second Saturday of the month. And during this August, we will be opening on Wednesdays too.
“The museum is a bit like the Tardis, much bigger on the inside than it is appears on the outside and you can travel back in time every day to the 1940s and capture the atmosphere of the height of the Cold War. We have tremendous exhibits too including a Jaguar and a Victor cockpit".
Sir John Allison, Chairman of the Trustees and Patron of the museum said “ It is wonderful to welcome Gregory to the museum as we embark on building on the successes of the past and to look at exciting ways of attracting new audiences including securing visits from more school groups. The museum is entirely self-funding and as well as comprising listed buildings has a unique story to tell”.
The museum, which is located on the site of the world’s longest continuously operating radar site, provides a unique window into the history of radar. The base was established in 1941, and played a pivotal role in the Second World War and monitoring hostile activity in the skies until the end of the Cold War. The museum is the largest museum in North Norfolk and is a great day out for all the family. The museum is located close to Horning Indoor & Outdoor Sports Village on the Broads.

Milly has made shoes for pop star Kylie Minogue and former model Jodie Marsh, and won the coveted Footwear Designer of the Year in 2015, with finalist status in 2016. Whether your dream is a pair of Ginger Bread Booties or Ming Dynasty Teapot heels, her wearable fantastical shoes are taking the UK by storm. And now she has designed Cromer-themed shoe clips for sale exclusively in the Tourist Information Centre, including a clip sporting Cromer crabs.
Milly said “It’s been an amazing couple of years and it’s very important to me to keep a strong link with the community I’m part of in Norfolk. “Making a shoe clip for Cromer seems exactly the right thing to do – a souvenir that is unconventional but that can be worn easily. I hope residents and visitors enjoy them and that having my shoes in Cromer Tourist Information Centre will encourage people to follow their creative dreams.
Milly’s new shop All About Shoes is in St Benedict’s Street, Norwich, where she went to Norwich City College. She is also a sought-after motivational speaker to encourage young people to try something new, and was the Inspirational Speaker for Schools and Inspiring the Future speaker in 2016.
Cllr Nigel Dixon, NNDC Cabinet Member for Business & Economic Development and Tourism, said “North Norfolk District Council is delighted to be able to host Milly J Shoes at our Cromer Tourist Information Centre. Milly is an incredibly gifted Norfolk craftswoman and entrepreneur, and we hope others will be inspired by her creations and her story.

National exhibition featuring First World War lifeboat rescues coming to Cromer • Fraserburgh RNLI lifeboat’s rescue of the steamer ‘SS
A national touring exhibition which recounts inspirational RNLI lifeboat rescues during the First World War will be based at the charity’s Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer this summer.
The free Hope in the Great War exhibition, which commemorates the centenary of the First World War, will be open to the public until 10 September 2017.
Funded by Arts Council England, Hope in the Great War honours the bravery of volunteer RNLI lifeboat crews who risked their lives to save others during between 1914-19, by raising awareness of six heroic lifeboat rescues.
Glenravel’ which saw 14 people saved from the sea on 8 Auust 1915.
• RNLI Port Eynon crew’s service to the ‘Dunvegan’ that took place 1 January 1916.
• The saving of 20 lives from the tanker ‘Ponus’ on 3 November 1916 by Falmouth RNLI lifeboat crew and service men. • The rescue of 23 survivors from the ‘SS Alondra’ which was wrecked on the Kedge Rock off Baltimore on 29 December 1916 by Baltimore volunteers together with two trawlers.
Opening to the public from 5 August at the RNLI’s Henry Blogg Museum, Hope in the Great War features Cromer RNLI lifeboat’s rescue to the ‘Pyrin and Fernebo’, which saw 33 people saved from the sea on 9 January 1917.
Hope in the Great War highlights the extraordinary achievements of ordinary people who volunteered for the RNLI throughout the war, conveying a sense of hope with many lives saved at sea by the charity. The exhibition offers an ideal way for families and young children to learn about the work of RNLI volunteers during the First World War.
Jacqui Palmer, RNLI Heritage Development Manager said ‘This exhibition highlights just a few of the many volunteers who saved others while the world was at war. Bravery and volunteering is central to the ethos of the RNLI and is as relevant today as it was during World War I. RNLI volunteers answer the call for help whenever it comes. Modern crews are fully equipped and trained thanks only to donations from a generous public. We hope that this exhibition will help to inspire current and future generations of supporters and lifesavers to enable the RNLI to continue to save lives at sea.’
The wreck of HMHS Rohilla. Whitby RNLI Coxswain Thomas Langlands was awarded an RNLI Gold Medal The exhibition is touring until December for Gallantry for the Rohilla rescue 1918 and has already proven popular at almost 20 venues. Now the Dads have their day…
This September sees the launch of a new group at Cromer Church Who Let The Dads Out? which is a toddler group with a difference. It addresses the growing demand for maleorientated parenting groups, and is specifically aimed at giving fathers and their preschool children the opportunity to have some fun and spend quality time together.
Who Let The Dads Out? is a growing Church initiative that aims to strengthen families and support the wider community by reaching out to fathers, father figures and children, primarily through Saturday parent and toddler sessions. A typical session will involve a relaxed welcome, lots of age appropriate toys/crafts, juice and biscuits for the children, countless bacon rolls, great coffee, good conversations and men gathered around a table discussing the best

Simon Fenn (Head of Mission) will be leading the project and said “as a new Dad myself, I think this is a fantastic initiative which is much needed in the area. It’s an excellent way for the Church to engage with the wider community, provide dads with the space to build positive relationships with their children, socialise with other dads and give Mum some time off!”

North Norfolk visitors encouraged to take home a taste of the county
Tourist Information Centres are selling popular local cook book Visitors to North Norfolk are being encouraged to take a taste of the county home with them.
A cook book packed full of recipes and stories from people at the heart of Norfolk’s gastronomic scene is on sale at Tourist Information Centres in Cromer and Holt.
The Norfolk Cook Book, which includes more than 50 recipes, has contributions from bakers, cooks, butchers and others. The likes of No 10 Restaurant, in Sheringham, and Cromer crabs are featured, and Great British Menu winner Richard Bainbridge has made an exclusive contribution.
Chef Charlie Hodson, one of the book’s contributors and the man behind the award-winning Nelson sausage roll, said it was aimed at “folk who really care about provenance”. He added “It’s all based around the best suppliers, retailers, restaurants and chefs in Norfolk, and the feedback has been amazing.”

Cllr Nigel Dixon, NNDC Cabinet Member for Business & Economic Development and Tourism, said: “The gastronomic scene in North Norfolk is something we are very proud of, and it’s part of a countywide success story.
“It is great that visitors to our Tourist Information Centres, which already offer a huge range of local information and advice, can now take a taste of the county home with them.”
The arrival of the book in the Tourist Information Centres comes as North Norfolk District Council promotes Norfolk Food Month, which includes selling produce in the TICs. Amongst the businesses that are involved in the campaign are Norfolk Saffron, Ollands Farm Foods (including its award-winning marmalades), the Nelson & Norfolk Tea Company, and Crush Foods (which makes oils, dressings, granola and Charlie Hodson’s sauces).
The Norfolk Cook Book, published by Meze Publishing, has been produced in association with Norfolk Food & Drink.
Sarah de Chair, of Norfolk Food & Drink, said “The book is a collaboration of some of Norfolk’s finest food and drink businesses, from restaurants to 01692 409705 producers, coffee shops to cafes – it 07917 433700 really does offer www.richardwyliedecorator.co.uk something for everyone and Norfolk Trusted Trader highlights what a wonderful county 100% rating Norfolk is.” See website for further details Cromer Times 524 August 19th 2017

Don’t let Cromer be in the dark this Christmas
The Christmas Lights Volunteers work hard all through the year to make the town look special over the Christmas period. Our numbers have dwindled over the last few years through illness and age and the current team could do with some help. The tasks involved are many and varied, so all offers of help would be welcomed. From making teas to directing traffic, manning stalls on switch on day to putting up trees and decorating them – there will be something to suit you. Free music festival set to rock the north Norfolk coast
A successful music festival on the North Norfolk coast is set to return for a second year. Unplugged By The Sea will showcase acoustic musical talent from near and far and for all ages to enjoy.
This year more than 30 acts will take part, with an eclectic variety of music on offer from harps to punk, fiddles to hip hop and folk to rock. It will take place at The Crown Inn,
Sheringham on 19 and 20 August.
know when we might need them to help us and how passionate and committed the volunteers are despite not getting paid a penny.”
The event, organised by Ben Carpenter and his fiancé Loren Allen, will run 12 noon until 11pm on both days and is free to attend.
Mr Carpenter, who has previously worked as a music promoter organising Rock Bodham, said “The music has a bit of everything for everyone, from solo ukuleles to punk and from folk to harps everyone will have something they will love for sure.”
All of the acts are giving their time to the festival for free in support of this year’s chosen charity, The Norfolk Blood Bikes (SERV Norfolk).
SERV Norfolk transport blood, plasma, platelets, samples and breast milk amongst other important donations to hospitals requiring them 24 hours a day, during the week, at weekends and bank holidays.
The organisation covers the county of Norfolk and is run by a dedicated group of volunteers who receive no financial compensation for their time or costs.
Miss Allen said “People don't realise how important the SERV is and how none of us

There will be a marquee should there be any adverse weather but organisers have said the event will go ahead rain or shine on the outside stage over-looking the sea.
Last year Unplugged By The Sea raised £1,200 in bucket donations and organisers hope to make this year even more successful.
Mr Carpenter paid thanks to Bob Brewster, Landlord of The Crown, Titch the sound organiser and all those involved in making it happen. Bob Brewster said “The Crown has always done its bit where charity is concerned and we have been hosting live music here for more than 35 years. Helping to host the event is a fantastic combination of the two."

The magic of Avatar is right here on Earth Have you heard of mycorrhiza?
These are beneficial fungal networks that connect to tree roots and provide them with nutrients from the soil in exchange for food that the tree produces. This beneficial relationship between organisms is called a symbiosis.
This network of fungus does more than just help out a tree. Entire forests are connected by these fungal links, and it’s captivated scientists, particularly in recent years.
Dr Suzanne Simard ran an ingenious experiment. She sealed the branch of a tree in a bag, into which she injected radioactive carbon 14 carbon dioxide gas. Using a Geiger counter, she then monitored the movement of this carbon 14. She found that the carbon, once used by the plant for photosynthesis, then travelled through the branches and trunk, down into the roots and into the mycorrhizal network. The carbon 14 was then found to have been passed to neighbouring trees, where nutrients continued to be shared throughout the community.
At different times of year trees best adapted will share higher quantities of carbon to help each other out. She found that covering some trees with a shade cloth encouraged nearby trees to give them more carbon so that they would survive. Even more astoundingly, she found that saplings contained higher

concentrations of the carbon 14 and has theorised that the younger trees are actually provided additional support by the surrounding plants and fungus, so that the forest will continue to thrive and the tree’s genes live on. Parent trees are raising their offspring and can recognise their genetic descendants, providing them with more carbon and nutrients than other trees - and saplings actually have a four times higher survival rate because of it.
It has since been proven that not only carbon is shared, but a myriad of nutrients and chemical signals.
Much like our immune response, trees react chemically to attacks by pests and diseases, such as the bitter tannins they produce to deter caterpillars from eating their leaves and stop the infection of bacteria and fungi. Studies have now found that the mycorrhizal fungus
between trees, as well as airborne volatile chemicals, appear to pass on these defence signals, with trees on the other side of the forest chemically preparing for attack long before any pests arrive.
We’re always taught to see the competition between plants, but what a notion that instead a forest is in fact a huge collaboration, intelligent enough to help other plants to survive, which in turn prevents large scale spread of pests and diseases. No wonder forests were so successful prior to our arrival on the planet.
I have a precious, highly battered book in my collection that was much beloved by my sister and I; The Faraway Tree Stories by Enid Blyton from back in 1939. In it she describes the trees whispering to each other – “wisha-wisha-wisha” in the wind. She would have been delighted to know that her enchanted wood is actually available for all of us to visit right on our doorstep.

Cromer Soapbox Derby 2017
The third Soapbox Derby has proved popular once again. Hundreds of spectators lined the barriers, every possible viewing angle covered by eager viewers. Toddlers on parents’ shoulders got the best views of all.
Continuing the yearly trend of increasingly demanding courses, 2017’s course saw spine chilling additions. The tighter chicane caught many drivers off guard, but this proved to be the least of their worries.
Spectators witnessed an explosion a splintering boards and shattering beams as one soapbox and then another succumbed to this year’s higher jumps (about 18 inches) propelled by the steeper starting ramp. Last year’s Derby provided plenty of scrapes and misplaced wheels, but the new course has proved just as exciting and perilous for the soapboxes. One memorable moment saw James Garwood’s soapbox split in two.
In the end, the riders were thankfully safe. Their trusty vehicles, not so much.
The soapboxes themselves provided a range of the familiar - such as the trusty White Horse soapbox, winner of the first Derby in 2015 - and the novel - such as the bright red Fire Engine Soapbox, complete with siren. There were 15 soapboxes overall and they ran three times each.
Highlights included the win of Christopher Daykin, who has been a driver since the first Derby in 2015, and the Challenge Run where North Norfolk News crewmen, Ellie and Allen, faced off for the Challenge Prize. Their times were 37 seconds and 38 seconds respectively. The weather and spectator turnout was splendid. Chairman Tony Shipp commented that he was pleased with the result. No doubt we can expect a return next year of what is fast becoming an essential overture to the Cromer Carnival.
Winners: • Overall Fastest Kart : Christopher Daykin, from King’s Lynn • Concourse Winner : Adam Cock of Boston, in the Fireman Sam Soapbox • Junior Winner : James Chare, Age 13 • Junior Runner-Up : Sam Flowerdew, from Buxton

Cromer RNLI Lifeboat Day
This year’s Lifeboat Day was well attended with demonstrations and activities throughout the day, including appearances by Stormy Sam and a concert by The Sheringham Shantymen.

Emergency beacon alert results in Cromer RNLI Lifeboat launch
On 8 August the UK Coastguard alerted Cromer’s all weather crew that a beacon sounding a Mayday request had been picked up.
Soon the crew at Cromer RNLI had assembled to launch and by 12.15pm the ‘Lester’ was on its way.
The sounding of a mayday beacon always results in the RNLI sending a lifeboat to find out the circumstances. The co-ordinates of the beacon appeared to come from the Happisburgh Sands, a notorious area for shipwrecks in the past. Once on the scene, the beacon was found to be one that had been abandoned at some time photo: Paul Russell and there was no reason for it to have triggered the alarm.
Richard Leeds, Lifeboat Operations Manager said ‘The RNLI will always launch to an emergency beacon sounding, whatever the circumstances and outcome. We are always ready to assist those who need help’.
By 1pm, Cromer’s lifeboat had returned to the boathouse, been rehoused and made ready.

Kayakers overturn near Overstrand
A report was received that two kayakers had both overturned near Overstrand last month and needed the assistance of the inshore lifeboat.
Cromer’s boat the ‘George and Muriel’ was launched just after lunchtime to go and provide the necessary support. The two people involved were soon transported to the beach with their craft and the lifeboat returned to station, cleaned down and made ready for its next launch. By 2.10pm ‘George and Muriel’ had been rehoused.

Shared Parental Leave Father wins Employment Tribunal Nicola Stretford, Head of Employment Law at Clapham & Collinge Solicitors.
In a recent case, the first of its kind, a father has won a case against his employer after they denied him more than two weeks paternity leave and therefore failed to allow him the full paternity rights of which he was entitled. His employer argued that Mr Ali was not entitled to additional leave because ‘he couldn’t give birth’.
Mr Ali won his case, after the Tribunal said that his employer had gone against the Equality Act 2010 and had not applied the new Shared Parental Leave rules. The new parental leave rules were introduced in April 2015, and mean that parents can now share up to 50 weeks of leave and 37 weeks of pay, between them. This also applies to those who are adopting.
The Shared Parental Leave (SPL) scheme
To l
allow parents to decide how best to split their parental leave based on their circumstances and creates equal opportunity for both mum and dad.
So long as you are eligible, your employer cannot lawfully deny you shared parental leave. You should first check whether you are eligible and then give notice of your intentions to your employer. In order to ascertain whether or not you are eligible they will require the following information; • your employment status (e.g. employed or worker) • the date you started your current job • the date you finished work (if you’ve finished) • how much you earn • when you want your leave to start • how much leave you want to take
Parents are not obliged to take Shared Parental Leave. Unless they qualify for and opt into the SPL scheme the only entitlement that the child’s father (or mother’s partner) has is two weeks’ ordinary paternity leave and pay.
The SPL scheme enables mothers and primary adopters to return to work before the end of their maternity leave entitlement. The unclaimed leave can then be taken up by the other parent under the shared parental leave rules, meaning they do not have to sacrifice any remaining leave that would otherwise be available to them. Where both parents are employed and wish to utilise shared parental leave, it is important they notify their employer at an early stage and discuss this with them in order to ensure the required steps are followed. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
When Mylee went back to see David for her check up, it was a relief to see that her gums were looking much healthier and she could finally come to live with us. As is often the case, moving to a new home can be slightly overwhelming for a cat and it did take a little time for her to settle. Although she and Maxwell are not yet best buddies they are gradually getting used to each other.
Mowgli, the young cat also mentioned last time, responded well to treatment and he too was given a clean bill of health and has now left for pastures new with another young cat. Both cats received excellent veterinary care from two of our very experienced and skilful vets, namely David at the Bridge and Toby at Westover. Although we do have a waiting list for cats to come into care, sometimes we receive a plea for help that means we have to pull out all the stops and do what we can to help the person concerned and also their cats.
A recent cry for help was received from a gentleman who had seen an explosion in numbers of cats in his home, from three to 30 over two years, while he had been in poor health. He contacted us in desperation asking for guidance as he did not know what to do. Stephanie called him as soon as she received the information and discovered that there were 12 kittens, young enough to come into care, plus 18 cats, all unneutered. This happened on the Wednesday. She contacted the local vets to confirm that we would pay for the adults to be neutered and for the mother cats to be blood tested, and arranged to pick up most of the kittens on the Saturday. By the time the kittens were collected, the gentleman

had already taken seven of the cats to the vets (all that they could cope with due to other operations) and had a further four booked in for Monday. By the following Friday all cats will have been neutered. The gentleman was very grateful for our help, as he had not known who Violet, talkative little cat, very friendly to contact and it was also who enjoys her food helpful, from our point of view, to work with someone who recognised that he could not cope and cooperated with us to reach a satisfactory conclusion. He had realised that, without help, he could easily have had 90 cats to care for by the end of the year. Thankfully his health has now improved and, with help from a friend, he is now able to cope. The kittens are all in our temporary emergency pens but will move to permanent pens as and when they become vacant. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Cromer Times 524 August 19th 2017
Our £50,000 Fundraising Milestone When our daughter Daisy was born in 2005, we eventually found out that the blisters appearing on her skin were Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). We were put in touch with the Charity DEBRA who supported sufferers of EB, and also the area Fund Raising Manager John Parker. By 2007 we were fundraising for the DEBRA Charity. The first sale we held was at the Table Top Sale in Holt Community Centre - it was hard work but myself and my Dad Peter raised a small amount of money and awareness for DEBRA. We continued with our sales in other places and a really positive event for Michael and I was an Easter car boot sale held in the car park at Sainsbury’s in North Walsham. Since then we have been busy fund raising for DEBRA at every available opportunity!
We have had so much support from family and friends. A favourite memory for us is being cold at an event on a windy field in Weybourne and Mum Christine arriving with delicious warm freshly baked cheese scones. A stall held once at Sheringham Carnival saw me and Dad get absolutely soaked as I kept saying ‘’I think the weather will hold a little longer’’. Dad was sure it was about to pour, and he was correct! We threw everything into the car and then couldn’t get in ourselves, which was the wettest I’ve ever been! We have had fundraising competitions with each other where Michael and our son Joseph were at a car boot in Wells and me and Dad at a car boot in Sheringham and Mum was left to look after Daisy and her poorly blistered feet. I can’t remember who won, but we raised lots of money and awareness!
Thanks to Holt Parish Church for allowing us to use the Church Hall for our Jumble Sales, and without the support of all our wonderful helpers we wouldn’t be able to hold these - Sue, Peter and June are amazing helpers, everyone’s help is always very much appreciated. The night before a Jumble Sale is always a challenge, with help from parents Christine and Peter and, of course, Joseph and Daisy - a late night and then an early morning but it’s always worth it! A lovely evening was held at the Auden Theatre in Holt, with the Charles Chambers Trio. It was a truly amazing evening with lots of monies raised. We regularly join the car boots at Bodham and Cookies in Sheringham - it’s lovely to see the regular customers! Stalls at Holt Primary School and Astley Primary School are always enjoyable.
In 2010 we were charity of the day at Mannington Hall, which was possible due to the kindness of Lord and Lady Walpole. It was one of my favourite fundraising days, and our biggest fundraiser. We were included in the Radio Norfolk Treasure Hunt, and had the clue hidden on an alpaca. The garage was turned into an Art Gallery, our friends and family helped on various stalls and it was a wonderful day.
A special memory was releasing 25 DEBRA balloons at Budgens of Holt with Mr Baker and Sandra when they celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Budgens being open in Holt, where we were then chosen as charity of the year.
Christmas Tree Festivals are another significant part of our fundraising. Rotary Clubs and Masonic Lodges in the area have also been generous.
Collection boxes on checkouts in Budgens and Nobbys all add up throughout the years.
Dubs at Holt Hall holds some great memories, from enjoying strawberries in the sunshine to pulling welly boots out of the mud, whilst Razz the Clown still continued to try and entertain!
Friends Sharon, Pauline and Peter have arranged quizzes for us which is very much appreciated. We have ladies who knit and sew the most wonderful crafts for us to sell. Without all the kind donations, we wouldn’t be able to hold so many events, a big thank you to everyone.
There have been so many very special moments, meeting others in similar positions, hearing people’s stories, being part of a special team and of course raising awareness of EB and much needed funds which goes towards research to help find a cure for EB sufferers. Now into our tenth year of fundraising, we have just been presented with a certificate from DEBRA having raised £50,000, which we are very proud of.

Night Flying Aircraft
I am of the age that I can well remember being scared out of my wits as a child by RAF Lightnings from Coltishall going over our house in the middle of the night, very low and very fast. Those days are long gone but we still get some low-flying aircraft at night in north Norfolk.
I work with the East Anglian Air Ambulance, which operates its helicopters from Norwich and Cambridge. We were the first air ambulance charity to get clearance to do night air ambulance work. This involves a lot of training and a lot of specialist equipment such as night vision goggles for the pilots and a large floodlight, which can be steered by one of the pilots.
The training is carried out all over East Anglia including around and into the grass airfield at Northrepps operated by Chris Gurney. So if you hear or see a comparatively quiet helicopter lit up like a Christmas tree going around that area, the chances are it’s our EAAA pilots being put through their paces – all in the name of saving lives.
Making more noise but definitely not lit up like a Christmas tree, you may occasionally see one of the rare and incredible USAF V22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft operating out of Mildenhall. It is half helicopter, half
aircraft, with a giant rotor at the end of each wing. At night, all you might see is two huge green circles flying along – tiny lights at the end of each rotor blade give that effect.
These aircraft are solely for Special Operations missions, usually delivering or recovering special forces behind enemy lines. Their training is without doubt of vital importance as part of NATO’s capability. I do have a connection – I am the honorary commander of the maintenance squadron that looks after these amazing machines, so I get to meet the flight and ground crews. They are all well aware of the impact their operations can have on the community and are grateful for our tolerance and understanding.
Finally, we sometimes see another twin-rotor aircraft – the mighty RAF Chinook transport helicopter. These occasionally visit this area, again for training purposes, often unlit and operating in pairs. It can be quite spooky to hear the deep sound and just make out dark shapes perhaps with a single red flashing light visible. They don’t stay for long and we should all be reassured that these nocturnal visitors are making sure they are fully prepared to defend this country and the free world wherever and whenever they may be deployed.
Patrick Peal, Chief Executive, EAAA Honorary Commander, 352d SOMXS USAF Mildenhall
Two Norfolk headteachers named as at top of their profession Two of the region's headteachers have been recognised as among the country's best by the profession's governing body.
Geoff Baker, principal at Cromer Academy, and Claire Heald, principal at Jane Geoff Baker, principal Austen College at Cromer Academy in Norwich, have been declared National Leaders of Education by the National College for Teaching and Leadership.
The designation recognises their skills as teachers and leaders and as people who can lend their expertise to nearby schools that 26
need help.
As part of the award, their schools also become National Support Schools in recognition of their strong track records of high pupil progress and performance.
Chair of the National College for Teaching and Leadership Roger Pope said “I’d like to congratulate Claire and Geoff and their academies on being appointed as national leaders of education and national support schools. They should be very proud of this achievement.
“National leaders of education are at the heart of school improvement. They’re supporting other schools and developing the next generation of leaders. At NCTL, we want to do all we can to support their work.“
Both Cromer Academy and Jane Austen College are part of the Inspiration Trust family of schools, which brings together 14 schools
in Norfolk and north Suffolk.
Jane Austen College is one of the most over-subscribed schools in the county at Year 7 and its sixth form students recorded the best A Level results of any Norfolk state school last year.
Cromer Academy was recently rated as Good overall by Ofsted, with Outstanding grades for personal development, behaviour, and welfare; and for leadership and management. It is in the top 10 schools in Norfolk for attainment at GCSE.
Trust chief executive Dame Rachel de Souza said "This is a fantastic achievement by Claire and Geoff, supported by the staff in their schools. These new designations add to our National Teaching School at Hethersett Academy, and are an important part of our work to improve education for young people not just in our own schools but more widely across the region." Rotary Club of North Norfolk Charity Golf Day raises £6000 for local Admiral Nurse
The Rotary Club of North Norfolk held a charity golf day at the Royal Cromer Golf Club on 2 August in aid of the Admiral Nurses Project.
Admiral Nurses offer one-to-one support and expert advice for families living with dementia and three Rotary Clubs (Holt, Fakenham and North Norfolk) have teamed up with Dementia UK, the North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group, the Kelling Hospital Appeals Trust, the Friends of Kelling Hospital and the CT Baker Group Ltd to raise sufficient money to offer services within North Norfolk. The £6000 made on the day is a major contribution towards the cost of employing an Admiral Nurse for two years.
The golf tournament was contested by 100 players in teams of four who began their round with a ‘shotgun’ start (which means they were all on the course at the same time each starting
SAFE RESCUE FOR DOGS FAMILY FUN DAY AND DOG SHOW
Safe Rescue for Dogs are holding their 5th annual dog show and family fun day on Sunday 3 September at Worstead Village Hall (NR28 9WH).
The show will open at 12pm and class judging will start at 1pm. There are 16 classes available for the dogs to enjoy on the day, with a trophy going to the winner of each class and rosettes up to 6th place. Best in show will be presented the perpetual challenge trophy in memory of Colin the special safe rescue Westie.. On the day, there will be on call first aid from St John’s Ambulance
on a different hole). Several of those taking part were not regular golfers and this together with a blustery wind and rain later on led to some interesting results. The eventual winners were the Jerry Kelly Decorators team featuring Jerry Kelly, Philip Search, Steve Traynor and Daniel Kelly. The Royal Cromer’s Captain Jayne Jones also took part and presented the prizes to the winning teams. Jayne is the first female captain in the 129 year Club’s history.
North Norfolk Rotary President Steve Wilson said ‘We are so grateful to everyone for making this day such a success because we are now close to reaching our goal of funding an Admiral Nurse for the region for the next two years. This is just one small step but it shows that when Community Organisations and individuals come together with the NHS and National and Local Charities, many things are possible’.
President Steve also thanked the players and and on call vets, Westover Veterinary Centre, North Walsham.
There are a range of stalls ranging from local craft stalls, dog equipment and many more. Alongside all of this, there will be refreshments, cakes and a giant tombola. For the children there will be a bouncy castle, play area and lots more. As well as the fun dog show there will be have a go at fastest recall, fastest sausage gobbler, and agility/obstacle challenge. Safe Rescue for Dogs is a locally based registered charity (registered number 1157320) which specialises in the rescue and rehabilitation of traumatised, sick and injured dogs from the UK and Romania. We believe that all dogs are equal

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB
Fjords, glaciers, the northern lights - these were some of the features of an illustrated talk, on Tuesday 1 August, by Peter Stibbons about several trips to Norway (and a little further) that he has made in the last four years.
Beginning at Stavanger, he took us up the west coast of Norway, stopping first at Bergen with its old wooden buildings and large harbour and a picture of seacrabs for sale at the local market. Further north. it was somewhat startling to see the front end of a glacier at the head of a valley. At Ålesund, which seemed to be built on several islands, there were heated seats (this
was in March) for the public to sit on when they were about town! At Tromsø, as well as daytime views of the town with its modern cathedral, there were several spectacular photos of the northern lights, in the shape of wavy yellowy-green curtains, against the background of a very starry sky.
Peter also took us briefly to Svalbard, then to the Lofoten islands, and westward to the waters near the Faroe islands, where he took several amazing pictures of an eclipse.
Cromer Marrams Bowls Club
This was a very well illustrated, interesting

A Shining Light has gone out at Cromer Marrams Bowls Club.
Peter Bird, a long serving staunch supporter and official of the Club, died on Friday 28 July this year. Peter was an excellent bowler and
travelogue, which told us much about Norway as well as some of the delights of going on a cruise. Peter was thanked by the Chairman, Jack Broughton.
Our next meeting at The Links Hotel, West Runton, will be on Tuesday 5 September when Alistair Murphy, Curator of Cromer Museum, will speak on the History of Cromer Pier. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our future meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. played successfully at Club and County level for many years. He was unassuming in attitude but at any time would respond to Club and Members’ problems with friendly, helpful advice and guidance. A lover of 60s music, he would provide a musical background at the weekly Club social evenings. Peter was also a regular contributor to this magazine in the section ‘Tales from the Bowling Green …’
He was known throughout the UK and messages expressing surprise and sorrow have been received from many areas.

English Channel Solo Swims for Cystic Fibrosis Two North Norfolk swimmers, Mark Claxton, a heating engineer from Sheringham, and Paul Robson, a swimming instructor from Trunch, are prepared for their solo English Channel swims at the end of August.
Mark and Paul, members of North Norfolk Crawlers have increased their training over the last year in preparation for swimming 21 miles solo across the English Channel.
Paul Robson on the and Mark Claxton on the right
Training has involved both sea and swimming pool. Pool training with distances of up to 10km swims once a week, with an overall distance of 30km a week. Sea training has consisted of short swims over the winter months of up to 15 mins in 5oC water temperature to help with cold water acclimatisation.
‘Swim times in the sea have lengthened as the water temperature has risen to achieve our qualifying swim of 6 hours in water temperature 15.5oC and under, which is required before any attempt. Our maximum swim time is a continuous 8 hours. After achieving these swims, you are ready to go, physically and mentally. To swim the channel you have to be a
