Sheringham Shoal supports surf life saving in North Norfolk

A grant made by the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund earlier this year has enabled the North Norfolk Surf Life Saving Club (www.nnslsc.org.uk) in Cromer to pay for volunteer training and purchase a range of new equipment, which will enable the Club to expand and train its junior membership.

The grant will enable 10 volunteers to take part in Level 1 and 2 training courses , and the newly arrived equipment includes junior rescue boards, REPAIRS, SERVICE DIAGNOSTIC training wetsuits, rescue tubes and CPR& trainer packs.

Preheat the oven to 180C/160Cfan/Gas 4. Grease 2 x 20cm/8in sandwich tins and line the bases. Blend the cocoa and boiling water together; add the remaining ingredients, except the chocolate and cream, and beat until mixture is smooth and thick. Divide the mixture between the two tins and level the mixture. Bake in the oven on the middle shelf for 25-30 minutes until well risen and springy to the touch. Leave to cool in the tins for a few minutes then turn out onto a cooling rack and peel off the lining paper and leave until cold. Make the filling and icing by breaking the chocolate into squares into a heat proof bowl and adding the cream,
Cromer found fame for its sandy beach, but a rocky choir might see the soul put back in the British seaside
A 100 person clan of Norfolk residents prancing around the outskirts of Norwich, clad in leather jackets and singing their hearts out is not an image immediately conjured when painting a picture of the local area. However, if you happen to peek behind the scenes of Invidia Voices, a growing choir currently based around Norfolk, you might happen upon some of the group of choir goers filming for their upcoming music video! The choir are filming a music video in an original arrangement based on the song ‘Happy’. This is a chance for the choir goers to feel like stars and show us all what they are made of in the process. The finished video shall be published online and the group plan to donate to Children in Need from any proceeds.
Good news for all interested readers as the choir has relocated one of its weekly classes from West Runton to Cromer! There are no auditions and the group’s philosophy is fun! Windsurfer rescued by Cromer RNLI
A request was made to launch Cromer’s inshore lifeboat at 1.45 pm on 18 August to give assistance to a windsurfer in difficulties off the east beach. Initially the lifeguards on the east beach had seen the windsurfer waving after he had capsized. They alerted the UK Coastguard who in turn requested Cromer’s lifeboat the George and Muriel be launched.
The crew were very quickly on scene and after assessing the windsurfer did not have any injuries, they took the person on board and went to the east beach to land them.
By 2.30pm, the George and Muriel had been cleaned down, refuelled and rehoused ready for its next call out.

A Walk Alone
Victoria Mansbridge grew up in the Midlands, where her family and friends are all based and where she met her husband “but my husband and I always harboured a dream of living by the sea. About 14 years ago we were out for a walk one evening and we thought 'if we don't do this now, we never will!' we'd run out of excuses not to...so we packed our bags, sold the house and headed for the coast. Originally, we moved to Wales, transferring over to Norfolk around 13 years ago. We love this area, we love the sea, the countryside, the great big skies and how friendly everyone is.
Ever since I was little I’ve been writing short stories and little pieces here and there – I always dreamed of one day having a novel published. Visions of Vienna
The concert, presents the men and boys’ choir of St Nicholas, North Walsham - the last amateur men and boys’ choir in Norfolk - in an exciting and varied programme of music, with a first half built around two of the pillars of classical music Franz Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then a second half featuring compositions across the breadth of English composition over the centuries.
There is guaranteed to be something for all tastes, whether a fan of classical music, choral singing or experiencing it for one the first times.
The ‘Little Organ Mass’ by Joseph Haydn is particularly renowned for its beautiful ‘Benedictus’ solo, which is normally sung by a solo soprano but in this concert will be sung by the boys line en-masse, adding a delicate beauty to it.
The concert is accompanied by Matthew Bond and directed once again by David Ballard who has now been Director of Music at St Nicholas since 2012 and currently oversees
the choir of 18 boys and 14 men.
It is an exciting time for the church, with visits to Leicester and Norwich Cathedrals planned in 2018, and advanced plans for the formation of a separate singing line for girl choristers in January 2017, meaning that all youngsters in North Walsham and surrounding areas will have the opportunity to participate in high quality music making for free.
Admission is £7 for adults, and under 16s are free. Refreshments will be available, and all proceeds from the concert go towards funding the choir’s future activities.

Recent headlines have indicated that people will be able to use voicemail and text message to make their Wills, under a radical overhaul of law proposed by the Government’s legal advisors.
The Law Commission has branded the current system of Will-making as ‘outdated’ and recommends that it be revolutionised to keep up with the digital age. At present, to be valid a Will must be signed by the testator (the person making the Will) in the presence of two witnesses, who are all together at the time and also sign the Will.
The new proposals would allow a judge to decide, on the balance of probabilities, whether a recording or a note is an accurate summary of the deceased person’s wishes. Even deathbed changes of heart could be recorded and used to override an existing valid will.
This sounds like a heyday for contentious probate lawyers!
However, like all such things, it is not quite as it first appears. The consultation document argues that this should apply not only to traditional written documents, but also where testators express their testamentary intentions
in an electronic format, as well as in an audio or audio-visual recording.
The Law Commission admits that these proposed changes could increase family arguments as relatives trawl through their departed loved-one’s technology for evidence of a change of mind to their benefit.
The consultation adds that: “A person who is seriously ill in hospital may have more immediate access to a tablet or smartphone than to a pen or paper, and may be more able to speak than to write. On the other hand, the potential recognition of electronic documents could prove a treasure trove for dissatisfied relatives. They may be tempted to sift through a huge number of texts, emails and other records in order to find one that could be put forward as a will on the basis of a dispensing power.”
These powers already exist in Australia, Canada, South Africa and several US states.
In the wake of these announcements, caution has been urged both by lawyers and olderperson’s special-interest groups amid concerns that the elderly and vulnerable could be even more subject to undue influence. Questions of updating tests as to mental capacity have also been raised by replacing current Victorian-era law with the principles of the modern Mental
Capacity Act.
One thing is certain, however, that the hasty and ill-judged making of a Will can only cause distress, cost and delay for those left to sort it out. It is not the preparation of the document that is the main cost of a professionally-drawn Will but the benefit of knowledge, experience, attention-to-detail and professional indemnity insurance.

Bittern Line 20th Anniversary An organisation that promotes a Norfolk railway line celebrated its 20th anniversary by holding a week long series of events. The Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership CRP), which helps to promote and develop the Norwich to Sheringham rail line, celebrated its 20th anniversary with special events, including live music, guided walks and craft sessions. More celebrations are planned for later in the year, too. Over the last 20 years, the CRP has played an invaluable role in supporting and developing projects to promote the line, build community links, improve station facilities and upgrade train services.
As a result, passenger journeys on the line have more than tripled since 1997 from around 200,000 journeys a year to more than 600,000 journeys a year.

The CRP has been a great success, working closely with successive train operators to help promote and develop the Norwich to Sheringham line. The Bittern Line CRP was launched in 1997, as part of a joint initiative between Anglia Railways and Norfolk County Council, aimed at revitalising the important rail link between Norwich and the North Norfolk coast.
It has also helped successive train operators to significantly increase service frequency on weekday afternoons, evenings and at weekends, provide additional station facilities such as ticket machines, customer information screens and cycle parking and enhance community links, with additional capacity for special events and better coordination for Paston College students. The line is set to benefit from significant investment during Greater Anglia’s nine year franchise. The operator plans to introduce a complete new fleet of trains in 2019/20, with more seats, air conditioning, wi-fi and plug points. Greater Anglia also plans to install ticket machines at all stations on the route, providing even more opportunities to encourage rail travel and support tourism and the local economy.

‘Our Day Out’ Gives Older People Time to Shine
‘Our Day Out’, the fortnightly dementiafriendly workshop project, continues to push forward with a wide range of free activities to engage older people across the Norfolk area. Delivered by professionally trained arts practitioners, musicians and dancers, the project is run by arts and community development charity Creative Arts East, with special funding from Spirit of 2012.
The sessions welcome all older people, and are also supportive of those living with early to mid-stage dementia (and their carers), as well as older people living with long-term health conditions, or those who feel isolated within their community. The ‘Our Day Out’ groups are based in Attleborough, Watton, Dereham, Thetford, North Walsham and Wells. The sessions are tailored so that they are accessible and beneficial for everyone to experience something new, in a safe and friendly environment.
So far in 2017, the groups have been enjoying making-music by combining electronic and acoustic instruments with Paul and Les, as well as creating uplifting songs and lyrics to some fantastic beats with Joe and Carl. The groups have also been enjoying some fun and entertaining dance sessions with Green Candle and Glass House Dance Company, specially devised to benefit and engage the whole body with gentle exercise.

‘Our Day Out’ sessions are all about having fun and feeling good afterwards, and Creative Arts East are keen to hear from older people who would like to join these friendly and inclusive creative activities. There are also opportunities for people who would like to become involved as volunteers, and help someone smile this summer.
In September, the groups will be taking part in some special ‘love themed’ Tea Dance events with Spilt Milk Dance Company and which will involve arts and crafts, cake, dance performances, games, and (optional) fancy dress! Friends and family of those coming along are most welcome too!

Protecting your dog against Ticks this year

East Anglia is a beautiful area, however, it is also an area classified as “high risk” for ticks. Ticks are most active between mid-March and October, however, with changes in the climate they are becoming active for longer. The most frequently seen tick is the sheep tick although the hedgehog and fox ticks may also make an appearance. All of these species of tick will feed on dogs, cats and humans.
Ticks are unable to jump or fly and travel by climbing on vegetation such as long grass and then waiting for a suitable host to pass by. They attach to this host using their hooked front legs. Following attachment, ticks will spend time choosing a suitable feeding site before attaching to feed via their mouth parts. As ticks take time to attach the act of brushing pets following a walk can reduce the number of ticks actually attaching. Tick bites are usually painless and attaching ticks are often as small as 1.5mm and will increase to the size of a pea after feeding. Not all ticks carry disease, but for infected ticks the action of attaching allows them to transmit diseases such as lymes disease, babesiosis, anaplasmosis and rickettsiosis to the host. The risk of infection transmission increases the longer the tick is attached to the host.
Ticks found on your pet should be removed as soon as possible using a tick remover to ensure that the mouth parts do not remain within the skin once the body of the tick is removed. At Toll Barn Vets tick removal is one of our free of charge procedures for our clients to help keep your pets in tip top condition.
How can we protect our pets? In order to reduce the spread of tick borne disease we recommend regular tick prevention treatments. These come in the form of tablets, collars and spot-on preparations and will usually kill ticks within 12-24 hours of attachment and last for between four and 12 weeks depending on the

Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals - they only come out during the day if there is a problem unless it seems to have a purpose and is going somewhere.
Second litters are now being born, so an active hedgehog could be a sign of a mother out foraging while her hoglets are asleep.

NENBC SEAWATCH
Following a sea bird identification workshop held in July in preparation for our co-ordinated seawatch events being held in August and October; members took part in the first event. Teams from the North East Norfolk Bird Club set up at Weybourne, W Runton, Cromer, Sheringham, Mundesley and Happisburgh to record all passing sea birds in a 3 hour period.
Team Weybourne 08/08/17:
Our team of Alan, Tina, Anthony, Pete & Sue, and me assembled at the entrance to Weybourne Camp at 6am. By 6.15 we were all set up, sitting on an elevated section just behind the coastal footpath with our ‘scopes ready to scan the vast expanse of the North Sea. Keeping an eye on a large and threatening black cloud that was drifting towards us from the north, we began to count the passing birds offshore. The birds of the day were clearly going to be Gannets with no less than 33 flying west in the first ten minutes, and a final three-hour total of just under 300. Common Scoters were the second most numerous species, although most were passing several miles offshore. Waders were very scarce and the highlights were four Little Gulls and an adult Hobby. The expected rain never materialized and after the requisite three hours of seawatching, we took a walk around the camp and were delighted to find a juvenile Black Redstart and Cuckoo, while four Black-tailed Godwits flying east were a bonus. All in all, a most enjoyable and rewarding morning. Moss
Team Mundesley 08/08/17:
It was raining hard when we packed the car at 5.00am with no wind. We collected our dear friend Gordon on time and arrived early at our site in the beachfront shelter at Mundesley. After unpacking the car-boot cafe and equipment, we pondered the most interesting birds arriving before the 6.30am start. Denise and Alan arrived on cue and the gannet-fest began and all sharp eyes remained peeled throughout, although I abandoned my post for the car park top-up, the loos next door and then was accosted by the cafe owner to know what we were doing; 7 minutes in all! Our newest recruit, Denise, called the two darker looking birds coming right low over the water close to two terns; our only arctic skuas of the morning as it turned out; top spot. Whilst we had all been admiring the cloud formations, which were quite spectacular at times; four grey herons caused quite a stir as we did not see exactly where they came from. The morning sped by with observation of the passing vessels becoming part of the enjoyment, when the birds were absent. All agreed it was an enjoyable sea watch, with Denise and Alan saying they will be back in October for the next one. My only disappointment was that nobody finished the freshly baked cheese scones but thanks to all involved. Lin

Paul is proud that his work has helped local charities, and he has received orders for his charity calendars from every continent. The RNLI, Nelson’s Journey, Break and Red Balloon are amongst the charities that have benefited from his support.

Free singing workshops starting in Sheringham September Mondays 2pm to 3.30pm at The Lighthouse, Sheringham from 11 September Following a very successful programme of taster sessions across North Norfolk earlier this year, Sing Your Heart Out (SYHO) will be starting a new SYHO North group in September at Lighthouse, Sheringham. SYHO is NOT a choir! The singing workshops are drop-in sessions to promote good mental health and well-being, and are open to anyone over 18 who likes the idea of singing in a group. Singing with others really lifts the spirits. People with experience of mental health problems and challenges are always especially welcome.

For those who are unfamiliar with the Morley Club on the main road near to the roundabout in Sheringham I can recommend a visit to find out what they have to offer. The environment is very nice and you will receive a friendly welcome. Bowls, darts and snooker are also on offer. We have held all our meetings there for over six years plus social events.
Events this year will have included four days at the Cromer Carnival with children’s games and a Tombola. Apart from up and coming collections we will be manning the Car Park at Mannington Hall on 3 September to assist Lord and Lady Walpole with their Charity Day. On Tuesday 26 September there will be a Fashion Show at M&Co, Church Street, Cromer. Tickets are £5 per person and will be available on the night and will include a complementary drink. This is a popular event, so make a note in your diary to join us and help raise some money. We are also holding a Festival of Choirs in St. Peter’s Church, Sheringham at 7 pm on 11 November, which is Armistice Day. Refreshments will be provided and proceeds from ticket sales (£5 per person) will go to this year’s President’s charity of choice the British Heart Foundation.

Enjoy autumn’s glowing displays of colour at Cley Marshes this October
This autumn, you can explore North Norfolk’s colourful coastal landscape and culture as part of NWT’s Cley Calling Autumn Colours festival, which coincides with the beginning of the Norfolk Walking & Cycling Festival.
From Thursday 5 October to Sunday 8 October, a variety of creative art workshops, guided walks and health and wellbeing events will be hosted at Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Cley Marshes to create a festival full of autumnal celebrations. Some of the highlights of the festival include:
• Thursday 5 October - Sunday 8 October – Live Street Art : Throughout Autumn Colours, nationally renowned street artist ATM will be creating a large-scale mural of an iconic Cley bird. His expertise lies in painting endangered species, most commonly birds, in urban environments in order to urge humans to connect with nature.
Everyone is invited to come along to NWT Cley Marshes to see street art in action and watch the bird transform over time.
• Thursday 5 October – Coastal Stroll with Jules Pretty : Tying in with Norfolk’s walking festival, well-known nature writer and coastal walker Jules Pretty is leading an exclusive and intimate guided walk along a stretch of north Norfolk’s stunning coastline. Guests will have the opportunity to see the sky’s very own palette of colours as the sun sets over the marsh whilst they have their supper, followed by hearing Jules tell the tale of his walking adventure along the East Anglian bulge.
• Friday 6 October – Does Nature Make You Happy? Laurie Parma will be discussing her research into the relationship between well-being and biodiversity. She is currently working at the University of Cambridge on a project with the Cambridge Conservation Initiative, in which they have developed a new smartphone app ‘NatureBuzz’, which aims to capture the relationship between human well-being and the environment.

Excellence by design – Graham Allen Awards shortlist announced
North Norfolk District Council releases prestigious awards shortlist of 2017 design heroes
The Graham Allen Award is presented annually by NNDC to the project considered to make the most significant contribution to the built environment within the district.
Cllr Sue Arnold, Cabinet Member for Planning said “The standard of entries this year has been excellent yet again. The shortlist covers such a range of tremendously interesting design projects each with very strong specific merits. Each one of them makes a great contribution to our built environment and to the high standard of the Graham Allen Awards.”

Winners have ranged from the extension to Binham Priory, to the refurbishment of the Gunton Arms, Thorpe Market.
Last year’s overall winner was Pensthorpe Natural Park, Hootz House. The new play barn incorporated a 300m2 indoor adventure centre and was commended by the judging panel for its innovative approach to design and sustainability.
The shortlisted projects will now undergo site visits from the judging panel made up of NNDC’s Development Committee and Edward Allen, son of Graham. The award winner, highly commended and commended will then be decided.
A public vote will then be held over the Greenbuild Weekend 9-10 September to determine the People’s Choice Award.

Parents of children preparing to start secondary school are being encouraged to put forward nominations for a sporting excellence programme in North Norfolk.
Last year’s inaugural Sporting Centre of Excellence scheme proved to be a great success, and North Norfolk District Council is funding the project once again this September.
The aim is to recruit young people who have the potential to excel in a sport and give them an excellent coaching experience and the opportunity to achieve their sporting dreams. This year’s scheme will start at the beginning of the forthcoming academic year, with a focus on attracting Year 6 pupils starting high school.
The pilot in 2016 saw more than 70 youngsters, aged 11 to 14, attend 24 weeks of coaching at Gresham’s School, Holt. They were given specialist coaching across four sports - hockey, netball, cricket and running. The success of the programme resulted in nine athletes being selected to
represent Norfolk in cross-country, a haul of medals at the Norfolk Track and Field Championships, three cricketers picked for county squad training sessions and hockey and netball players invited to join top clubs. All the district’s secondary schools were represented and, perhaps most importantly, all the children who took part in the scheme showed improvement.
Cllr Maggie Prior, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Sport & Leisure, said “Last year was a great success, both individually and collectively. The experts at Sport England said it was innovative and demonstrated good practice, and that sort of praise from the experts shows just what a great initiative it is.” Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of NNDC, said “The Sporting Centre of Excellence scheme has highlighted the need to deliver high-quality sports coaching to the young people of North Norfolk, and we hope as many parents as possible will nominate their children to benefit from this fantastic opportunity in 2017.”

We are always very busy at this time of year with lots of kittens coming into care for various reasons. Whatever the reason, we try to help as it is important to make sure that they get safe and caring homes. It is also important to make sure that the new family are aware that they are making a commitment for the lifetime of the cat and that they could be responsible for its welfare for up to 20 years.
Sometimes people’s circumstances change and they cannot continue to care for their pet and, in these instances, we are only too happy to help as, when a cat is re-homed, we always advise them to contact us if, for whatever reason, they are no longer able to look after their cat. Most other cat charities we have contact with prefer to take a cat back into their care too. However, we are aware this does not always happen and a recent example occurred when Irene, one of our fosterers, was visiting the vets with one of our cats. A lady came

in with an older cat requesting that the cat be put to sleep as she did not want it. As Irene has been hoping to offer a home to an older pet, she was interested in taking the cat on and the lady, who was not the owner, kindly agreed to hand it over to us so that Irene could adopt it. On Dolly and Barnaby just waiting to checking the paperwork, we be chosen discovered it had only recently been re-homed by another charity and, on contacting them; they were horrified to learn what had happened. Like us, they would have been only too happy to take the cat back once they had a space.
When a cat is handed into our care that has previously been re-homed by another charity (or even another branch of Cats Protection) we always like to check up to make sure they are happy with the arrangement, and similarly, other charities and branches of Cats Protection contact us when a cat is handed into their care. Our main point of contact for Cats Protection locally is the Dereham Adoption Centre with whom we have shared many calls recently, mainly about re-homing kittens, but that is another story.

How could I have let it all go? It was time to face the truth and stop the weight piling back on AGAIN...
Twelve years ago I moved to Norfolk with my husband, 4 year old son and 2 week old daughter. We had a new life, a new house and new baby, what could be better? But, I wasn’t happy. I was five stone overweight and really fed up struggling to feel good about me.
I got focused and by the time my daughter was one I had lost 5 stone and I felt fantastic and a new woman. I went from a size 20 to a size 12 and enjoyed being able to buy clothes that looked good.
What went wrong? Well, I maintained my weight loss for 10 years but then I started to take the eye off the prize and slipped back into bad habits. I then went back to working in an office where I would sit for five hours a day and slowly, without noticing, I started to grow again. Some people might say ‘why didn’t I notice that I was slipping down the slope?’ but I didn’t. I started wearing more comfortable clothes that would stretch with me and that’s when it all started to go wrong, because you don’t notice the inches expanding wider and wider.
At the end of last summer, when the sun disappeared and so did the comfy dresses, I began to realise what I had ignored - ME.
I pulled out some of my winter work clothes and that’s when it hit me like a punch in the face. My trousers wouldn’t even zip up. At that very moment I felt like a cake that had been cooking all summer and turned into a very risen cake. Still with a little ignorance, I said to myself it must be the trousers so I went up to the next size. They did do up but if I moved or sat down they would have split, so up another size …
I just sat back on the bed and cried, I looked into my mirror and was very angry with myself. Why, after all that hard work, had I let it all go?
That feeling that I had had 12 years ago of feeling very low and unhappy had come back and I really didn’t want to be that person again.
I couldn’t face every day trying on clothes that were too tight and having the same battle every morning with myself so I got my husband to get me a large box and I emptied my wardrobe with any items that didn’t fit. I went out and bought a few items that were ok and would get me by without feeling too horrible. I was trying to keep positive and take action.
Now what? I was really battling with the devil on my shoulder having a go at me and making me feel like a failure, but I was doing all I could to keep my spirits up.
Then, opposite my house a Slimming World Club opened and every Wednesday, I would see all the members drive past my house and go in. This was a big battle for me - why you may ask? I really felt like a failure because I had done it and achieved my dreams, yet I let it all go. I should have known better but it just is not that easy. Other members out there will understand it’s not easy when life gets in the way and we have to battle with other issues/ situations that we have going on in our lives. It took me all the courage I had to walk in and join again, but I did it, and everyone made me very welcome, and I started to feel better and that I was not alone.
That was 16 November and I never looked back. I made sure I gave myself that one hour a week for me and to focus on getting back that healthy lifestyle for good this time.
I reached my target weight one week after my
daughter’s 13th birthday so at the same time as 12 years ago I DID IT! 3stone 3lb lost, and did I feel amazing? Yes I did!
People asked ‘what’s the difference from last time’? Well, the answer is simply the Food Optimising Plan. It is a healthy eating plan and I have made it a way of life for me now and not a quick fix diet that only lasts for a short time. I never feel hungry or that I am missing out because nothing tastes as good as being the new slimmer and healthier me.
I still enjoy and eat all my favourite foods like curries, full English breakfast and chocolate, but the difference is the way all the foods are cooked.
Recently I have got that big box of work clothes out from the loft and actually they still don’t fit me - because they are all too big! I will never again wear stretchy clothes - apart from PJs, of course.
Another lifestyle change for me is that during my journey, I was so enthusiastic about the plan, and how, if you Food Optimise 100% you can still enjoy life and food, that I attended an opportunity event with Slimming World, went on the training and now, four months into being a Slimming World Consultant, I have given up my day job of nine years to concentrate on my Slimming World career, and to help others fight the demons that life brings and which throw us off track with our weight (which I understand so well because I have been on the journey and back again and have experienced the bumps along the way). I have finally found a career where I can make a difference to others, which is so important to me.
I relaunched my own group in Cromer in May and I am helping over 100 members achieve their dreams. In September, I am relaunching another group in Buxton/Badesfield to help many more overcome obesity and improve their lifestyles. Jane Keil

Fly tipper prosecuted with help of landowner Magistrates fined man £470 for two offences
A fly tipper was caught and prosecuted for two offences thanks to the combined efforts of a landowner and North Norfolk District Council. The North Norfolk man was one of two individuals who drove to an area close to Northrepps Cottage, near Cromer, in July of last year. They fly tipped a wardrobe and threw the wooden panels around the woodland. A CCTV camera installed by landowner Simon Gurney was triggered by the vehicle movement. In August, one of the men returned to the same area after receiving a letter from the council asking him to come in for an interview under caution and covered the area with toilet roll. Mr Gurney, who since 2007 has been managing a landscape restoration scheme in the area where the fly tipping happened, reinstating the Humphry Repton landscape of 1790, had put in the cameras due to a history of fly tipping on his land. Annie Claussen-Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Waste and Environmental Services, said “Fly tipping on private land is a big issue and is a selfish act which can damage the environment. The Council is determined to tackle the problem and is hoping to work more closely with landowners on projects in hot spot fly tipping areas. We would encourage landowners to contact us if they have fly tipping issues on their land and we can work with them to find a solution.” Mr Gurney said “Many landowners are suffering at the hands of fly tippers. As well as being unsightly, this crime can cost landowners lots of money in clear up costs. If fly tipped waste isn’t cleared up, landowners can be prosecuted under illegal storage of waste legislation – which is

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club Tales from the Bowling Green ...
Our Club activities have included the annual Gentlemen v Ladies competition and, on 12 August we had a light-hearted President's Day.
Whilst enjoying ourselves, our thoughts were with Peter Bird and his family and it was decided that monies raised at this event should go to one of the Peter's charities, so approximately £250 will go to The Epilepsy Society.
We had our Club Spoon Drive on Carnival Day, which was well supported by members with plenty of the general public watching both the bowling and the 'Red Arrows'. Our catering ladies, led by Janice, excelled themselves - a huge thank you to them.
Competitions : EBA and Federation Competitions have now been completed and a full report will appear in the next edition of the Cromer Times. We still have two more games in the NANSA League.
We have a friendly game on 5 September against Loughborough Tourists - 7 rinks mixed - at home.
In-house competitions are now at the semi-finals stage and the finals will take place during the weekend Friday to Sunday 8 to 10 September with, fingers crossed, some support from the public.

Once again, it was nice to see the marquee full of families enjoying a game of bingo with some going home with very nice cash prizes. Despite the hard times some businesses are facing, we still had over 100 items donated for the raffle as well as quite a few from the general public, so a big thank you to those shopkeepers, traders, businesses and individuals from Cromer, Suffield Park and beyond for those prizes which enabled us to raise £1464 which will go in to the Carnival Fund. The caller Jim lost his voice after a few games so his son Shane took over the calling – a big thank you to Shane for stepping in so we could all continue to enjoy the evening. Thanks also to all who sold tickets and sorted out the money on the night. It was nice to have Phoebe, the Carnival Queen and some of her attendants there to draw the raffle. We had a friendly match against Wymondham Dell BC on 6 August and visited Watton (Loch Neaton) on 20 August – both enjoyable friendly matches.
Our 'green' team, led by Neil, have provided six rinks that are playing well - not just my opinion, visiting teams have also commented favourably.
