CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY
At our May meeting Simon Harrap spoke to members on the subject of ‘Wild Flowers in the Garden, Friend or Foe’. Simon runs ‘Natural Surroundings’ at Bayfield Hall near Holt and is an authority on wild flowers, especially wild orchids. There are over 1500 species of native wild flowers and plants in the U.K. and not all of them have arrived by design.
Most commonly wild plants are seen as weeds by many gardeners and those who have struggled to rid their gardens of ground elder, docks and bindweed will testify as to the nuisance they can be. Continued on page 4...

Continued from front cover... Some weeds can bring benefits to a garden. Common fumitory and fat hen are good for birds and hairy bittercress can be eaten in salads but on the whole most gardeners can do without them. Native wild flowers are another matter, however. Nettle-leaved and giant bellflowers have brightly coloured flowers and common toadflax will brighten up any garden with its yellow, snap-dragon like flowers. Many wild roses are highly scented.

Many plants brought into the country in past times as ornamentals have escaped into the wild and are now seen as nuisances. Giant hogweed and Japanese knotweed are two of the many plants that gardeners would not want anywhere near their gardens. Some woodland plants are much more acceptable if you have the right conditions. Bugle and wood anemone need damp, shady conditions and bluebells, of which Britain has half the world’s supply, will grace any garden. The much derided ivy is one of the most wildlife friendly plants in the garden as it flowers very late so helps bees find food when not much is about, has berries favoured by birds in the winter and provides cover for all manner of wildlife throughout the year. Yellow common toadflax
The depth of knowledge shown by the speaker was clear for all to see and members left the meeting with a new appreciation of the opportunities available, especially for those parts of the garden that are difficult to fill with plants that are suitable.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday 13 June at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. Jaime Blake from Bressingham Gardens will be going ‘Around the World in 80 Plants’. Sounds interesting so do come along if you are able. Visitors are always welcome. Cost £2.

Applications open for Community Transport Fund North Norfolk District Council to host workshop for organisations interested in applying for grants.
North Norfolk District Council has announced that its Community Transport Fund is open for applications.
The scheme is designed to support community transport schemes across the district that help vulnerable, disadvantaged and isolated residents of all ages access the services and facilities they need.
The types of project the fund is likely to support include Good Neighbours, Dial-a-Ride, MediRide, and work and study schemes. Any voluntary organisation that currently provides or wishes to set up a community transport service in North Norfolk is encouraged to apply to the council for a grant.
Cllr John Lee, Leader of the Council and of the Conservative Group, said “At a time when many authorities are cutting back on community projects, I’m absolutely delighted that because of the sound monetary policies of this council, we are able to provide these funds to assist some of our most vulnerable residents.”
Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, said “I am delighted to see the rollout of this Community Transport Fund.
There was concern about cuts being planned to vital services due to new legislation – cuts that could have left some of our most vulnerable residents even more isolated. We hope this funding will help to ensure the continuation of these excellent and important services.”
Cllr Nick Coppack, Leader of the Independent Group, said “I believe this is vital for the people of North Norfolk. Many who may not drive need the support of this kind of funding from the likes of Good Neighbour to MediRide to give them reassurance that they can make medical appointments, and it means that they don’t have to worry about carrying heavy loads of shopping. I wholeheartedly support this scheme.”
A workshop for organisations interested in applying for a grant will be held at 10am on Thursday 7 June at the council’s HQ in Holt Road, Cromer. The workshop will outline the application process and – after any grant is awarded – what is required in terms of monitoring, data collection, publicity and promotion.
Applications to the Community Transport Fund can be submitted at any time, and decisions on applications will be made in March, July and November. To be considered this July, applications need to be submitted by June 29.
CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB
On Tuesday 1 May, our speaker, after lunch at the Links Hotel, West Runton, was Mr Arthur Bailey on “Confessions of a Coach Driver”, though the talk was far less lurid than the title suggests!
For more information or to apply for a grant, visit
www.north-norfolk.gov.uk and search for “community transport fund”.
To discuss a potential application or to book a place on the workshop, call the Communities Team on 01263 516173 or 01263 516248.

Arthur spoke about the many trials and tribulations of his long career as a coach driver -- for example, driving a group around Ireland with a tour ‘guide’ who got them lost on some very narrow rural roads, or once (in England) having to wait for seven hours while his passengers went fishing!
Arthur gave us quite an entertaining talk and he was thanked on behalf of the members by the Chairman, Jack Broughton.
In June we will have our AGM (no guest speaker) but on Tuesday 3 July we will again have a speaker, Mr Roger Townsin, on The Russian Far East’.
If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or business man and would like to join us at one of our future meetings you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

Cromer Social Services, a group of Cromer residents which has spent the last four years organising social events in the town while raising money for good causes, is reluctantly disbanding. However, before it disappears, the group intends to make one final contribution. Since 2014, Cromer Social Services has hosted several highly successful gigs by local bands, including the Sweetbeats, the Piratones and Round the Clock. Also at Cromer Community Centre – the group’s venue of choice – it has run disco nights with DJ Kev

O’Connor. Perhaps most notable of these was ‘Dead Disco’, 2017’s antidote to the loss of so many great musicians in the preceding couple of years. Most recently, a series of ‘Keep the Faith’ Northern Soul nights proved particularly successful. Cromer Social Services is delighted that original DJs Trevor Half Nelson and Hitman Hawkins are still running this event, now under the banner of Cromer Soul Club, and wish them every continuing success. Numerous charities benefited from the group’s activities, to the tune of many hundreds of poundsA spokesperson for the group explains “Now the time has come for us to move on. But before we go, we still have more than £400 left in the kitty, which we want to bequeath to a deserving and exciting local cause. We like to think that our final act will be one of passing on the torch.” To this end, Cromer Social Services is inviting applications for its remaining funds. If you operate a good cause in the area, or you have plans to get one off the
ground, the group wants to hear from you. Cromer Social Services invites applications from all interested parties. However, it particularly welcomes those that highlight the group’s core value of inclusivity, or focus on supporting the area’s young people. Your application certainly doesn’t need to be formal, and can be as brief as you like, as long as you make it clear how the funds would be used. Applications should be emailed to cromersocialservices@gmail.com Pending their imminent dissolution, you can still contact Cromer Social Services via their Facebook page, or by following them on Twitter at @CromerSocSer

Top Awards Celebration at Muckleburgh
On Saturday 28 April 80 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers were presented with their Bronze, Silver and Gold Chief Scout Awards, and District Youth Commissioner Ed Cubitt received his DofE Gold Award at our North East Norfolk District Top Awards Celebration at the Muckleburgh Collection on the coast at Weybourne. District Secretary Lorraine Henriksen writes “Because these awards are special, District Commissioner Paul Henriksen explained that we try to not just make a presentation of a certificate, but to make an event which is special and memorable, fun and educational and we most definitely fulfilled all our objectives.
By mid-afternoon we were getting really sorry for Mike the driver of the Armoured Personnel Carrier who was getting wetter and colder with every trip! The Leaders and more importantly, the young award holders were all having too much fun to even notice that the sun wasn’t shining. Even the families were standing outside
taking pictures and watching their children going around the course from the viewing platform and were also able to tour the museum which had 25 working tanks and over 150 military vehicles, plus thousands of related items on display while the young people were completing their activities. It all goes to show what a success the day was.
Robin & Sue Baden Clay also managed to fit-in a visit to check-out the new West Runton Group HQ Extension which they missed in January!
Sir Michael Savory kindly let us use his premises for the day and is raising funds for a new Tank Shed therefore we held a bucket collection

Our young people had an amazing experience all round and following the activities the presentations were made in the cafeteria by Sir Michael Savory, owner of the museum. He was joined by Robin Baden Clay and his wife Sue – Robin is a grandson of Sir Robert Baden-Powell the founder of the Scouting movement. They had managed to find a slot for us in their busy diaries and had travelled from Dorset up to Norfolk especially for our event.
Henleys Estate Agents wins 3 awards at The ESTAS, the most prestigious awards in the UK property industry sponsored by Zoopla
The Cromer based estate agency received 3 awards at the prestigious ESTAS Customer Service Awards for 2018 including Best in Norfolk for Lettings at the biggest awards in the UK property industry. The winners were announced by Phil Spencer, the TV property expert at a lavish luncheon & ceremony at the Grosvenor House, Park Lane London attended by 1,000 of the UK’s top property professionals.
The awards, celebrating their 15th year determine the best estate and letting agents in the UK based purely on feedback from customers who are asked a series of questions about the service they have received from their agent, over 36,000 surveys were completed by customers during the competition.
Phil Spencer, who has hosted the ESTAS every year since their inception in 2003 said “The ESTAS are special because shortlisted and winning firms are selected purely on the service you deliver to your clients. Real feedback from real customers experiencing real service, I don’t think there can be a greater honour in the industry than to receive an award based on that mantra.”
Jeff Cox, director of Henleys said “We are absolutely thrilled to be recognized at this year’s ESTAS. It means so much to us as we know it’s our customers who have judged our performance. We take our levels of customer service very seriously because we know clients have a choice. We have always been very proud of the personal service and this proves we are delivering what we promise.” Cromer Times 542 May 26th 2018
on the site on the day and we are pleased to report that with the help of the families who attended we have been able to contribute generously to this fund - the success of the day was reflected in the donations we received.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Firstly, an update on the cats mentioned last time. Dixie and Mr Pastry have both been reserved and Connor continues to make progress on cage rest.
The kitten season has now arrived and we do have a lovely young mum, Marylou, together with her four kittens who were born in care. At this time of year we usually have a list of people who are waiting for kittens to arrive and, consequently, all four kittens are reserved and will be leaving shortly. Once Marylou has been neutered, blood tested, vaccinated and chipped she will be put up for adoption. She is a lovely friendly little cat and we do not think it will be long before she has a new home. The kittens will also be vaccinated and chipped before leaving and we will pay for them to be neutered at one of the vets we use when they are a little bigger.
Our cats and kittens are lucky as, when they leave for their new homes, we know they have received the very best treatment to ensure they are healthy and remain so. Unless adopted from a charity they are unlikely to have had more than flea and worm treatment. It is therefore important for people to know what to look for when buying a cat or kitten, especially if this is done online. Bright eyes, clean noses and ears are the first things to look for. If a kitten, a fat tummy does not necessarily indicate good health, as it probably has worms and also make sure that its bottom is clean. Check its coat, (which should be nice and shiny), for little black
Hedgehog Haven
In the last few weeks there have been more releases. There has also been three new arrivals.
Nugget was found out during the day and I have discovered that the reason for this is that she is blind.
Derek was heard screaming as he had fallen into an uncovered drain hole. Luckily he is recovering well and will soon be released. Please make sure drain holes are covered - once a hedgehog falls in they cannot get out and can suffer a nasty death by starvation.
specks, as these will indicate the cat may have fleas. See how it interacts with you and, if timid, appreciate it may take more time to settle and be prepared to allow for this. Don’t just look at the colour of a cat’s coat but take into consideration its character. Be aware that some people charge ridiculous amounts for kittens with certain coloured coats.
You may be looking for a pedigree cat; if so, please read up about the different breeds to ensure the one you choose fits Jasper is a handsome boy your lifestyle. Obviously, a pedigree cat coming in with his sister costs a lot of money so make sure you go Poppy to a reputable breeder who will register the cat with the GCCF (Governing Council of the Cat Fancy), either as a ‘pet’ or ‘breeding cat’. They will give you papers detailing the cat’s family history. Be aware that, for instance, ‘Rag Doll’ crossed with ‘Maine Coone’ is not a pedigree cat but just a moggy.
Finally check the conditions the cats/kittens have been living in. We do hear some very sad tales from people who contact us for help with the cost of neutering the cats and kittens they have bought.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Pictured is Humphrey. He was found by the side of the road. He had been hit by a vehicle. I will be taking him to the vets tomorrow to make sure his jaw is not broken as his mouth is sore and he has lost some teeth. He also has a sore nose so is finding breathing difficult. He has managed to eat and drink a small amount and I am supplementing that by syringe feeding watered down meat loaf dog food. I have also put him on a course of antibiotics and given pain relief.
So please when driving especially at dusk look out for hedgehogs wandering seeking food. Thank you

Dementia Action Week 2018 - Taking action for a dementia friendly Norfolk
Monday 21st May 2018 marks the start of Dementia Action Week in the UK. An initiative set up by the Alzheimer’s Society which aims to encourage people to take action to improve the lives of those affected by dementia.
As a firm, we have made a number of pledges to play our part in making Norfolk a more welcoming and helpful place for people living with dementia. We are a member of the Norwich City Dementia Action Alliance and hold regular dementia awareness sessions and training workshops to help raise awareness, understand what it's like to live with dementia and to help create a dementia friendly community. All of our lawyers are 'dementia friends' and we are proud to be a dementia friendly business.
One of the common questions we regularly face as Solicitors is what can an individual, who has been diagnosed with dementia, do in terms getting their legal affairs in order. The answer to this is simple, if you or someone you care about has been diagnosed with dementia, it is important to consider whether two documents are in place and up-to-date – a Will and a Lasting Power of Attorney.
What is a Will? A Will is a legal document that sets forth your wishes regarding the distribution of your Estate. It allows you to decide what happens to your property and possessions upon death and choose who they are bequeathed to.
What is a Lasting Power of Attorney ("LPA")? Having a Lasting Power of Attorney in place is just as important as having a Will. There are two different types of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA). One relates to 'Property and Financial Affairs' and the other relates to 'Health and Welfare'. Both Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs)
Cromer Times 542 May 26th 2018
appoint trusted people (attorneys) to act on a person's behalf should they lose the mental capacity to make decisions for themselves regarding financial matters or general welfare. It therefore helps to give you the reassurance of knowing your wishes will be respected if you ever become unable to make decisions for yourself.
I have a diagnosis of Dementia - can I still make these documents? There is a common misconception that a diagnosis of dementia prevents you from making or amending these documents, however, this is not the case. The legal test for capacity to make a new Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) is decision specific and applied on a case by case basis. This means that whether an individual has capacity to make a new Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) will be very much dependant on their personal circumstances at the time of giving the instructions.
When we meet to take the initial instructions, the solicitor can assess whether the person has sufficient capacity to make a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) or Will. If the solicitor has any concerns about a person's capacity they can ask the person's GP to assist. Therefore, just because you are living with dementia it does not necessarily mean you are unable to make these documents. However, it is important to bear in mind that time is of the essence and it is sensible to ensure you seek legal advice as early as possible, while you are still in a position to pass the legal test for capacity.
Commentary by Joseph Keeping, Solicitor in Wills, Trusts and Probate team covering North Walsham and Sheringham offices.
To find out more or discuss your individual requirements in further detail, our dedicated Lasting Power of Attorney solicitors are on hand to help, contact the North Norfolk team today, call North Walsham, 01692 660230 or Sheringham 01263 823398.

We enjoyed an excellent buffet lunch, our annual spring lunch, which this year was supplied by Outside Catering at the Old Rock Shop Bistro in Cromer.
We can highly recommend this cafe with its outside catering branch. Sam worked away in the kitchen while our committee meeting was going on, plating up all the goodies. There were 25 of us to enjoy the fruits of his labours and the food was very good indeed. We had heavily laden plates with a good variety of salad items, ham, pork pie, quiche for the vegetarians amongst us and gluten-free options too. They had worked extremely hard and we will be sending them a letter of appreciation. Josie treated us to a choice of cakes to celebrate her special birthday. The Bistro supplied these too and they were beautifully light and tasty. All in all a lovely experience and one we can hopefully repeat.
The Strand Club proposes to hold a fundraising coffee morning in the Pavilion on 8 August. It will take place between 10am until 12noon and will be in aid of two charities. Canine Concern is an animal therapy charity which sends trained pets wherever they are needed to lighten lives and alleviate stress - care homes, prisons, and to children who are undertaking exams or having difficulty with school. The second cause we will be supporting is the new doctors' surgery in Cromer. The NHS have paid for the fabric of the building but all contents have to be supplied by donations. At our coffee morning there will be refreshments to buy, a raffle, cake stall, table top sale of bric-a-brac and a guess the weight of the cake. It should be a fun morning.
Our next meeting will take the form of our outing to Gressenhall with transport supplied by Wrights Coaches. We are all really looking forward to this.
Please do come along and try us out at any of our ‘normal’ meetings! They begin at 2pm and are always held in the Sports Pavilion in Overstrand. Everyone is welcome and we charge just £2 at the door which covers light refreshments. Cromer Air Cadets
April was a busy month for Cromer Air Cadets.
In the middle of the month, a team of seven took part in the annual wing field event at Wretham Camp near Thetford.
The event consists of ten activities over two days and includes orienteering, archery, raft building and core Air Cadet subjects, such as First Aid and aircraft recognition.
Although fielding an inexperienced team, an average finish of about half way in most activities, together with an overall finish of 19th from twenty seven teams, was encouraging and a big improvement on last year.
On the same weekend two of Cromer’s older cadets travelled to RAF Cosford to take part in the RAF road marching challenge (WARMA). This annual event attracts members of the armed forces as well as cadet units and consists of a 25 mile march both days and is used as a qualifier for the four day, 100 mile event in Nijmegen, Holland to be held in July.
Both Cromer cadets achieved the qualifying time and will take part in the Nijmegen event.
With several other events taking place in the near future it is a busy time for the Squadron who are keen to attract new cadets. Anyone interested who is over 12 years old would be welcome to visit the Squadron headquarters in the grounds of Cromer Academy on Monday or Thursday evenings between 1900hrs and 2100 hrs.

Council charges for DIY waste unlawful, claims MP
A local MP has challenged Norfolk County Council following its decision to impose charges on household waste - a move he claims is unlawful.
A press release issued by NCC in February announced that it is no longer free of charge to deposit small amounts (up to 80 litres or 1 item) of household DIY waste (fixtures and fittings to a house, such as doors and fence panels) at household waste recycling centres.
The council claims there is no legal requirement to provide free disposal because DIY waste is classed as construction and demolition waste, which must be paid for by the service user. This means that if a householder has a broken door panel, they are now required to pay if they want to dispose of it via the appropriate channels, even though its removal is not part of construction in their house.
of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, as ‘waste from domestic properties, caravans, residential homes and premises forming part of a university, school, other educational establishment, hospital or nursing home.’ Mr Lamb said: “I’ve challenged Norfolk County Council over their decision to impose DIY charges on the basis that it is unlawful and will lead to an increase in fly tipping. The council needs to think again – they state that they are treating all DIY waste from a household as ‘construction and demolition waste’ but this simply cannot be justified under the terms of the legislation.” Following DEFRA’s response, Mr Lamb has written to the Managing Director at NCC asking for a full review of the proposal.
However, Mr Lamb, the Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, disputes the legality of this move.
After being contacted by constituents about the new charges, Mr Lamb asked the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for clarification on the definition of household waste and whether NCC’s classification of household waste is lawful. DEFRA’s response states that in 2015 the Government made an order ‘prohibiting local authorities from charging householders to deposit household waste at civic amenity sites or household waste recycling centres.’ DEFRA set out the definition of household waste, according to section 75(5)
Cromer Born Artist Exhibits Five New Originals As part of the North Norfolk Open Studios, Samuel Thomas will be exhibiting five new originals and five new limited edition prints.
You will see Cromer and the surrounding Norfolk areas depicted in unique and uplifting ways that burst with colour and joy, illuminating the joy and wonder that Norfolk brings to its locals and its many visiting tourists. The artist works in a number of styles, one of which echoes back to the nostalgia of the 1920s ‘Come to the seaside’ railway posters, but with a contemporary twist. The gallery will be showing a large range of affordable limited edition prints that start from £95 each.
The artist also undertakes commissioned paintings which can be seen on his website, where you can also browse or purchase from his vast collection at www.samuelthomasart.co.uk The exhibition runs from 26 May - 10 June through the Garden House Gallery at 31 Garden Street, Cromer.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club
to 85 victory. Cromer won’t come up against a better team this season and were not at their strongest so captain Neil was not too despondent!
News from the Club House ...
The Crabs team played their opening game at home to Marham (runners-up last year) with a team much changed from last season. The green was playing well. By the half way stage of the game Cromer were ahead on two rinks and leading by shots overall. However, it didn’t last and two rinks ended up being soundly beaten. The other rink of Bob, Roger and Jean were ahead as the final end was played. Unfortunately they lost 2 shots to end up drawing 17 each. So a 1-8 defeat (37-65) was the final result.
The Men’s team should have started in a local derby at Suffield Park but the weather led to a postponement, rearranged for Thursday 5 July. They began the season at home to a side who will be expecting to be top at the end of the season, or very close, that is North Walsham. They showed the gulf in ability between the two teams with a comprehensive 0-5, 22 shots
The first friendly game of the season saw a visit from CMB Wisbech. In a game of 4 triples, Cromer won 3-1 (83-41), with the outstanding rink being Chrissie, Tabetha and Neil P winning 28-2.
We would be pleased to welcome new faces to the Club. Come along at 10am any morning for a roll up and see what fun you can have. More info from Edna 01263 511155.
Friendly matches to watch at Runton Road in the next fortnight are ‘Friends United’ BC Monday 28 May at 2pm, Holt BC Friday 1 June at 2pm and Rushymead BC Sunday 3 June at 2pm.
League matches at home are (EBA) Wednesday 30 May at 6.30pm v Reepham Nomads and (EBF) Tuesday 29 May at 6.45pm v Holt.
CROMER TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB Cromer Town ended their season with two home games against Hindringham and Bungay Town - Cromer had to beat both teams to stay up and relegate Hindringham.
Played in a cup tie atmosphere, Hindringham took the lead but the Crabs drew level with a rifle of a free kick from Julio Pinto into the top left corner of the visitor’s net.
Cromer had a headed goal ruled out before this for offside which looked a perfectly good effort cancelled out for the Crabs.
Bungay Town called off on the following Saturday and Cromer were

Cromer Town`s relegation is not confirmed yet as the Anglian Combination is restructuring its league and the Crabs could stay in Division One.
