Cromer RNLI Coxswain retires after 36 years of service
June 2018 marked the end of an era at Cromer Royal National Lifeboat Institution Lifeboat Station as our long-serving coxswain John Davies retired.
John has always been proud of his Cromer heritage and always had a passionate interest in the RNLI being the eighth generation of the Davies family to have served on the lifeboats. John’s distinguished family history not only includes Henry Blogg, but also his father Richard William Davies.
During his 36 years of dedicated service John has crewed and skippered several RNLI lifeboats – most recently the state-of-the-art Tamar class Lester. John’s skill, courage and knowledge of the local waters are well

John is to be celebrated as a man of many parts but in particular we recognise his leadership of the charity's volunteer Cromer crew. He has been a sound example and mentor to many young recruits to the lifeboat service.
John remarked ‘The crew have been my family for the last 30 years. I've seen these lads grow up and flourish and I will enjoy watching them take over the reins. The lifeboat has been in Cromer for over 200 years and we are merely custodians of it at a certain time, it will carry on for years long after we've all gone’.

July
The months have slipped by, it is now July. Two larks are soaring high in the sky, blue cornflowers are growing beside the stream, I could sit here all day and happily dream. A blue butterfly hovers and alights on my arm, in a moment she'll move, so I have to keep calm. I pick up my book, a grass snake slithers by, it's time to leave, and I give a sad sigh. WHY CHOOSE SILVER SIL VER & W ARD WARD SOLICIT ORS in 201 ? 201 ? SOLICITORS
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT APPOINTMENT,, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. offer fer the same I advise new clients to “shop around as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can of expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norfolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 201 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 823465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

Sharing your home with an older parent Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr
This is a companion to last month’s article on the topic of ‘The Bank of Mum and Dad', which dealt with parents helping their young adult children put their first foot on the housing ladder. Here, I consider arrangements where children help and support their parents with housing in later life.
This can be provided by combining one home into two or by a ‘granny annexe’ arrangement; usually, but not always, done with the best of motives. It may involve an element of a gift but, with that comes risks and sacrifices. The solicitor has a major role to play in putting in place a plan and/or giving independent advice.
Possible arrangements are:
• Buying something together, possibly a house with a granny annexe;
• Buying two homes close together, with each household still being independent;
• Adapting/extending one of their homes;
• Squeezing the parent into the current home; this is usually the least good option.
Important points to consider are:
• Differing interests and potential conflicts; especially between the in-laws. Ideally, all arrangements should be as open within the family as possible, even if it is not what
all the family would have chosen. Here, clear legal advice is critical and all the possible future problems need thinking through in advance. ‘Stress tests’ are best applied at this point, rather than in a crisis.
• If there is a gift element, is it in return for the provision of care? Would this include buying in specialist nursing care?
• If there is to be joint ownership, who is to own what? If building work is done, the cost of it is not usually reflected in an increase in property value. What if the child needs to raise a mortgage to provide their contribution?
• What if it all goes wrong? Who are you to turn to for advice/support? What about loss of mental capacity? A Lasting Power of Attorney appointing an independent trusted advisor can be a God-send.
• Achieving fairness, especially upon the parent’s death. Who gets what and when? Might the carer-child and their family lose their home, if they can’t afford to buy out the siblings after the parent’s death?
• What if the parent needs residential care? How is it to be paid for? Is there to be a buy-out option?
• Taxation complications: Watch out for the new Inheritance Tax: Residential Nil Rate
Band and the 3% surcharge to Stamp Duty Land Tax, especially.
There is a lot to think about and every family is different. Clear and independent advice is so important. A bespoke solution is worth the investment.
This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.

New book from Sheringham Naturalist Moss Taylor
Sheringham naturalist and author, Moss Taylor, has just had his 8th book published, ‘Wings over Weybourne’ – an account of the history and birdlife of Weybourne Camp.
When he first visited Weybourne Camp in 1972, little did he realise that it would become the centre of his birdwatching and bird ringing activities for the next 46 years, as it still does to this day.
The book opens with a chapter by the owner of the Muckleburgh Collection, Sir Michael Savory, in which he gives a fascinating account of the history of the defences employed in the Weybourne area from Roman times up to the end of the Second World War. The main part of the book describes the amazing variety of birds that the author and other observers have recorded on the camp and the adjoining Muckleburgh Hill.
To date 289 species have been recorded in the area, the vast majority since 1972. In addition almost 24,000 birds of 118 species have been ringed on the camp, and these have resulted in a large number of recoveries both within the British Isles photo: christaylorphoto.co.uk and abroad, the most interesting of which are tabulated and their significance explained.
The book runs to 146 pages and includes 39 colour photos of many of the less common birds. It retails at £15 and all profits from the book will go to Love for Leo, a charity set up by the author and his partner, Robina Churchyard, which helps to finance equipment and treatment that is not available under the National Health Service, for Norfolk and Suffolk children with cerebral palsy.
Copies of the book are available from the shop at the Muckleburgh Collection or from Moss Taylor by phoning 01263 823637 or by email at moss.taylor@btinternet.com

Cromer RNLI launched its inshore Lifeboat ‘George and Muriel’ after a person called HM Coastguard to reports of a person in difficulty on the pier.
It had been reported that a person was threatening to jump from the pier, so a request was received for the inshore life boat to be launched at 13 30.
After a short while it was apparent the situation was being dealt with on the pier and the lifeboat was stood down. By 14 00 the boat had returned to station been cleaned down, refuelled and made ready for its next service.
Billy Gaff, Deputy Launch Authority said: ‘Our training means we are able to deal with all situations, whether on land or the water. Today we were called to a situation which was resolved with the person getting the help they needed’ Cromer Times 545 July 14th 2018

Northrepps Branch of Royal British Legion Revival
There is no better time than this year, the 100 year Commemoration of WW1, to launch a revival of our branch, which was first formed in 1949, as now here in 2018, our membership has depleted.
We are so determined to keep this country village branch thriving. It is not a requirement to have been a member of the Armed Forces to become a member of The Legion, as we welcome ex service personnel, individuals who support the Armed Forces, or indeed have family members or friends who are currently serving.
By kind invitation of our neighbouring branch, Cromer, we were at Armed Forces Day on Saturday 30 June with our stand, in the Parish Hall, Cromer. This proved to be a great success and our thanks go to Cromer Branch, and Cromer Womens' Section, for their wonderful hospitality. Our branch meetings are held at Northrepps Country Cottage Hotel and we would like to welcome you.
For further details and information, please contact our Branch Chairman Lorna Fish on 01263 579633.

Thar be Pirates coming to North Lodge Park in Cromer! Y'AARGH!
Boxtree Productions are returning to the beautiful North Lodge Park on the 5th August this year. They will be performing their brand new family musical adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's benchmark pirate story 'Treasure Island'. What better way to while away a sunny summer's afternoon than watching a swashbuckling tale of pirates and hidden treasure told in the energetic Boxtree Productions style?
When Jim Hawkins discovers a treasure map amongst the possessions of the late 'Captain' Billy Bones, it hurtles him in to a cat and mouse game with dangerous pirates, taking him across the World to 'Treasure Island'.
Will Jim find the treasure? Will he make it back to England? And should he trust the mysterious ship's cook, Long John Silver?
With inventive staging, original songs and magical storytelling we invite audiences to enjoy this classic tale of adventure, treasure and, of course, rum, in Boxtree Production's unique and energetic way!
James Franklin, managing director of Boxtree Productions said “We are so excited to be coming back to North Lodge Park this summer. It's a lovely garden and it will be good to be telling this classic tale of pirates and the ocean with the salt of the Cromer sea in the air!”
“Last year we had a super afternoon when Boxtree Productions brought their production of Wind in the Willows to Cromer, so we really wanted them back this year” said Barry Meadows who is organising the event on behalf of the Friends of North Lodge Park. “The Park is so suited to outdoor theatre, and Boxtree have proven they bring the Park to life with their style of theatre.”

Holt Festival announces new Artistic Director
Anwen Hurt to take the helm of North Norfolk’s leading arts festival
North Norfolk’s award-winning Holt Festival has announced that Anwen, Lady Hurt is to be their new permanent Artistic Director from 2019 onwards.
Anwen has been involved in the Holt Festival, in various guises, since it was founded in 2009 under the chairmanship of Rhu Bruce Lockheart. She will take the reigns for the 2019 festival and beyond, following in the footsteps of Stash Kirkbride who took the helm as guest Artistic Director for the current 10th anniversary year and previous directors, Charles Pugh, Delaval Astley and Tony Britten.
‘I am delighted to be appointed Artistic Director of the Holt Festival.’ Anwen commented ‘I have been involved with the Holt Festival in different guises since its

inception and have watched it grow over the last ten years under the guidance of Rhu and Tony, Delaval, Charles and Stash. Big shoes to fill! I look forward to continuing their work and helping the festival to expand and develop.’
Adney Payne, Chair of the Festival Board said ‘Everyone at Holt Festival is delighted that Anwen Hurt has agreed to be our Artistic Director from 2019. She has been involved in the Festival for many years and we are very lucky that someone of her calibre will be programming the Festival. ‘
Anwen was married to the actor Sir John Hurt until his death in 2017 and has lived in Norfolk for the past ten years.
The award-winning Holt Festival has become
established as one of the East of England’s most anticipated annual events. During festival week the charming North Norfolk Georgian country town becomes a magnet for tourists, arts lovers and international performers.
For its 2018 10th anniversary year guest Artistic Director Stash Kirkbride has curated a programme that encompasses big names like Jasper Carrott and Leo Sayer; local legends The Nimmo Twins with a special Norfolk Day event, and political and journalistic heavyweights Lord Ashdown, Ann Widdecombe and John Simpson. The music programme ranges from Italian classical pianist Gloria Campagner to the Zimbabwean sounds of Anna Mudeka, as well as rock and jazz. The Festival, which runs from 21-29 July also boasts world exclusive exhibitions, children’s events, drama, film, comedy and more. For full details and tickets visit www.holtfestival.org

Holistic skin care from Coltishall Clinic Look after your skin this summer Skin is the largest organ in the human body. It is our body’s first line of defence against the elements such as sun, wind, heat, pollution etc.
You may be surprised to learn than some skin cancers are caused by excessive sun exposure during our formative years of between 5 and 15 years of age. So it is especially important to use sun protection for children.
Also our capacity to form collagen and for skin to renew itself reduces from the age of 18 years. But, there are things we can do to slow down this process. Good skin care forms the foundation of skin health. So here are our recommendations.
SKIn CARE Cleanse and protect Cleanse to remove contaminants from the skin. Based on your type of skin you may choose a gentle or foaming cleanser or even a salicylic acid wash for oily skin. Good sun protection is vital. We are exposed to more artificial light from increasing light pollution so it makes sense to use a SPF 25 even indoors, especially for those of us who have pigmentation issues. Sun protection is not only for the face but also for the whole body including scalp, ears and hands. Exfoliate Dead skin build-up can give your skin a dull, dry, and lifeless look. Exfoliate to reveal softer, fresher, looking skin. You can use an exfoliating product or try our microdermabrasion treatments to remove dry patches and other minor skin imperfections. Hydrate Inside and Out Our bodies are made up of more than 60 per cent water, but throughout the day, we can become dehydrated, giving our skin a wrinkled, less firm appearance. To avoid drying out, drink plenty of water for internal hydration. External hydration is also important, so try applying facial and body lotions immediately following a shower to help seal in moisture. Repair We now have the technology to repair damaged skin. We have a range of medical grade skin care products available at variety of price points at the clinic such as agera, retriderm, heliocare, cell pro and obagi medical.
Cromer Times 545 July 14th 2018
We also have prescription strength products for stronger effect! Our next step up the skin care pyramid is simple yet cost effective treatments such as light based treatments, gentle chemical peels or microdermabrasion. We do recommend a course of these for best results. For specific skin problems such as acne, rosacea and pigmentation we can use specialised skin care and laser treatments. Lasers can also be used very successfully to treat acne scarring, facial wrinkles and to achieve skin tightening. These procedures however may require a small amount of recovery time. These can be performed purely under local anaesthesia.
For more advanced skin changes we can offer more invasive treatments including surgical treatments. By offering a full range of skin care services – from skin creams to surgery, we can look after all your skin care needs over a lifetime. We also make recommendations based on your unique needs and not suggest treatments only because these are available. Log on to www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call us on 0800 0430737 for more information or to book your consultation appointment. Coltishall Clinic Skin Care approach ©

THE NORTH NORFOLK RAILWAY IS LOOKING FOR YOU!
If you have some ‘free time’ and would like to get involved in one of Norfolk’s top tourist attractions, the North Norfolk Railway would love to hear from you.
The railway, which runs steam trains between Holt and Sheringham, is keen to recruit volunteers to lend a hand. Volunteers are needed for a variety of roles including Dining Train Staff, Ticket Office, Gift Shop and Buffet, Platform Supervisors and on train staff as well as many other positions..
Anyone interested in getting involved can find out more by visiting us for our informal ‘Volunteer Drop-in Days’ on the first Saturday of each month from 10am until 1pm in the Refreshment Rooms at Sheringham Station.
You won’t need any specialist knowledge of railways to get involved, as whatever position you choose to volunteer in you will be trained for it.
Volunteers are all ages and come from various backgrounds to help us with the many different aspects of running the railway. It’s a great chance to help with something that is so much a part of the local community and to meet with such interesting people. For older people there is the camaraderie and for the young people there is the chance to be able to show prospective employers that you would be a willing employee.
Dennis is a volunteer Platform Supervisor and is going to tell you about a day at the North
Norfolk Railway...
“As a uniformed member of staff I will be dressed in my three piece suit, white shirt and tie. I like to arrive at Sheringham at about 8.30am and park in the staff carpark. I start unlocking the gates leading from the main carpark. Ted, the Station Master will have already unlocked the buildings and then together we clean out the ticket office and waiting room, so that we are soon ready to receive our first passengers. By 9 o’clock we are ready to have our first cuppa of the day. After this we load the first train with the stock for the buffets on the stations further up the line. 9.50am is when, as train dispatcher, I must check all the doors are closed, signals are set correctly and then I can indicate to the guard that he may blow the whistle and wave his flag to let the train leave.
Most days we run two trains on the line at about 50 minute intervals throughout the day and on each return to Sheringham the loco has to do a ‘runround’ and then be dispatched again. The day continues like this with breaks for tea and answering lots of questions from our passengers as well as visitors who have just ‘come to have a look’.
I enjoy what I am doing because it helps to keep me fit, I meet lots of nice people and I get
the chance to work with a BIG TRAIN SET. I am on the platform at Sheringham on Saturdays and then on Thursdays I volunteer at Holt. Each station is very different; Sheringham is the hustle and bustle station with a Station Master and two platform supervisors whilst at Holt I am the acting Station Master with perhaps one other member of staff as this seems more like an older quiet village station.
I really enjoy what I do. It gives me job satisfaction helping people to enjoy the railway as well as having a great day among with my friends.

Northrepps Church Roof Restoration – almost there!
Following the theft of lead from the roof of St Mary's last summer, Northrepps Church needed to raise £27,058 to restore the building.
A range of activities and fund raisers have been held to date and the Rev David Roper is now delighted to announce that funds are beginning to look healthy enough to instruct the contractor to begin the repairs before the winter causes further damage.
A massive £6,039.07 was raised through our recent 'Open Gardens & Arts Weekend' with over 750 visitors exploring the colourful and
inspiring gardens, enjoying the home-made refreshments, and purchasing from the local Norfolk artists displaying their wares at the village hall and in some of the gardens.
'Treasure Quest' (Radio Norfolk) called in at the 1953 Showman's Caravan parked in one garden and many people were entranced by the Gauge 1 model railway manned by rail enthusiasts from across Norfolk.
CROMER FLOWER CLUB
The weather was kind and both days were well attended by happy and enthusiastic visitors - many thanks to one and all for making this possible!
Last month, Northrepps hosted a further two fund raising events the 'Top Banana' gig in the village hall was a sell-out success and raised a further £808 through the bar and the raffle whilst enjoying dancing to the sounds of the 70s, 80s and 90s and the 'Tea & Cake' event the
In British Flower Week we welcomed our florist from Mount Street, Cromer, Emma Askew who was a first time demonstrator and did a very good job.
First she made us a hand tied bouquet - she has had plenty of practice as she makes well over 100 every Mother’s Day!
Emma cleverly made a wire frame using aluminium wire fastened into circles to support and extend the bouquet. The basic foliage was umbrella fern, fatsia leaves and the flowers clematis anthuriums, billy buttons and stunning birds of paradise. It was displayed in an old goldfish bowl lined with fatsia leaves.
She then showed us a design trying to use less plastic and more environmentally friendly. This was achieved by using a glass vase and a copper mesh column to hold everything in place. The flowers were beautifully scented British flowers from Alby (very few miles, air or otherwise!) and included achillea, cornflowers, sweet williams, lupins, oat grass and lavender.
Next for a change from football we enjoyed a tennis theme design using biodegradable florist foam, billy buttons to represent the tennis ball which were crossed with sticks and then tied with wire. She then placed the most athletic flower, canna lilies and red sweet williams to represent strawberries in the design.
Next she made a beautiful wedding bouquet all in white using chrysanthemums, cow parsley, stocks, mimosa and spray roses. A handy hint was to work in front of a mirror so you can see what you are doing.
And last of all she made a wreath table centre. Plastic tubes were attached to kebab sticks and fixed in a foam wreath. The foam was covered with fern, rubus, asparagus and spotted laurel, yellow carnations, red gerberas, and green chrysanthemums. In the little tubes were asparagus, umbrella fern and then wonderful gloriosas.
The vote of thanks was given by Noreen Hawes.
The competition this was ‘an unusual container’. These included a cabbage, a pineapple, a pepper, a colander, a brown hessian sack, a metal chicken and a tool box. The best in show was Val Kirkwood’s Cromer Times 545 July 14th 2018
following afternoon added a further £712.20 to our funds. We await to hear how much is to be donated from Waitrose who kindly selected our roof fund to be one of their 'green token' local charities for May.
These events, combined with over £4000 donations from villagers, £7,500 from the insurers and a grant of £2000 from the Paul Bassham Charitable Trust now take our total to £21,069.52!! A superb effort from all … now just £5,988.48 to go!"
arrangement in an old golf shoe which came alive with peonies, lisianthus, heucera and fatsia leaves.
Our next meeting is at Cromer Primary School at 7.20pm on 16 July when Terrie Potter is on an ‘Attic Attack’.

Weather with Ned Nimbus
The past three months of weather on the coast have been greatly affected by the position of a high pressure area that slowly but surely gained influence over our weather.
This was always going to be the case as a dominance of high pressure was forecast but any airstream coming in from a colder than normal North Sea would deal us a cold, misty or cloudy hand from time to time. 18
However, the forecast for a good summer continues into the next three months and this outlook has now been adopted by many forecasters moving from a negative stance.
Higher than normal pressure will continue so the threat of an airstream from the North Sea also continues from time to time although some intense heat this time could be brought to us from the south or south east and its attendant thundery outbreaks. Cromer Marrams Bowls Club News from the Club House ...
The league form continues to disappoint with the Crabs EBF team taking the long journey to Marham for a 0-9 defeat.
The EBA league team results were looking no better after a 0-5, 57 shots to 73, defeat at home to Suffield Park.
However, the visit to North Walsham perhaps showed a sign of better times ahead. The rink with Bob as skip only lost by 1 shot and Neil P’s rink gained a commendable 20-20 draw. The result was 49-69 with .5 points to Cromer and 4.5 points to N.Walsham.
The NANSA team are in a similar position after a 2-6, 46 shots to 59, defeat at Sheringham Morley although David M, Jean N and David G did win on their rink.
The Lord Fermoy cup game against RG Carter ended much the same with an overall 21-58 defeat.
The ladies team seem to have ‘caught’ the losing bug too with a 27-45 loss in a friendly game at home to Sheringham Morley ladies.
However, there is one bright spot! In the NANSA 3 wood knockout cup Cromer have progressed to the semi-finals courtesy of a 2nd leg victory over North Walsham Tungate. Holding a narrow 5 shot lead from the 1st leg, Cromer won on 2 rinks for a 57-43 win. Well done you ‘boys’! Next up is Stalham in the semis. Home leg 13 July, away on 30 July.
Unfortunately the losses continued in the friendly fixture v Houghton on the Hill from Leicester. Wins on 2 rinks weren’t sufficient to avoid a 71-90 defeat. However, the visit of local side Buxton in a friendly saw a change of fortune in a 60-41 win.
The victories continued the following weekend with an 87-65 win (4 rinks to 1) against Aldiss Park from Dereham. It has been noted that Steve may well play much better when under the influence of a certain beverage! Also noted were TWO wrong bias bowls from a young lady whose name cannot be withheld (no fake news allowed), isn’t that right Jean N! The winning rink was led by Jack, Chairman Philip and Bob.
The following day we entertained Islip BC from Northamptonshire and enjoyed a comprehensive 137-93 victory (5 rinks to 1). It was noted that Chairman Philip may be achieving beyond his means as he again was included in the winning rink with Francis, Chrissie and Roger G. Savings on Chairman award pens are increasing. Watch out for a sale of pens on Ebay at the end of the season!
