To keep yourself and beach wildlife safe, MCS says: leave animals where you find them carefully lift and replace any rocks you may have removed – there are animals underneath that need them for shelter leave attached seaweed in place – there is plenty lying loose on the shoreline do not trample through the rock pools play away from cliffs. continued on page 5

On arrival in Korsakov Sakhalinsk, the travellers were greeted with gifts of salt, bread and vodka - a traditional welcome, apparently! Roger gave us a lot of information -- with excellent photos -- about the local wildlife, including Steller's sea eagles and tufted puffins. We learnt also a little about the geology of the Kuril Islands which are part of the well-known 'Ring of Fire' around the Pacific, and are volcanic. In Petropavlovsk (Kamchatka) the visitors were again presented with bread and salt. (I am not sure what happened to the vodka!) In the countryside beyond Petropavlovsk, the snow can be five feet thick, although it tends to melt around trees, interestingly. Sperm whales are to be found in the Kamchatka region, attracted by the deep-sea squid. Roger spoke about many other aspects of the region, including some of its history and its indigenous peoples.

Roger gave us a very full and interesting talk and he was thanked by our new Chairman, Michael Webb.

Roger's trip was an ‘Expedition Cruise’ which began in Japan but which focussed on the Russian island of Sakhalin, the Kamchatka peninsula and the Kuril Islands, which are also governed by Russia.

Our next meeting will be at The Links Hotel, West Runton, on Tuesday 7 August when Dr John Beal will speak to us (after lunch) on ‘Toothache, Saints, and Churches’. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our future meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS CLUB We have two exciting pieces of news for readers.

First we have had several requests from people to join our Club. This means that with our existing members the total membership will be nineteen, making us one of the largest Clubs in the County. This will enable us to do more fundraising and be able to help more local causes.

Secondly ee are holding a Charity Family Fun Day on Sunday 2 September at Mannington Estate, starting at 11am and ending at 5pm. There will be lots of food, drink and entertainment for all ages.

We hope to raise enough on that day to purchase a portable ECG machine for very sick children at the Jenny Lind Hospital, who will be represented on the day with information.

All welcome, entrance fee £6 per adult, concessions £5 and under 16s free. There is free parking including disabled parking for all.

Please join us on the day. There will be other charity stalls as well. Liz Bowler, Press Officer

RIP CURRENTS

Rips are strong currents that can quickly take swimmers from the shallows out beyond their depth. Lifeguards will show you where you can avoid rips but if you do get caught in one: stay calm – don’t panic if you can stand, wade don’t swim keep hold of your board or inflatable to help you float raise your hand and shout for help never try to swim directly against the rip or you’ll get exhausted swim parallel to the beach until free of the rip, then make for shore if you see anyone else in trouble, alert the lifeguards or call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

TIDES A beach can seem like a vast playground, but the tide can come in surprisingly quickly. Many lifeboat and lifeguard rescues are to people getting cut off by the rising water. To prevent this happening to you, get local tidal information from the Harbour Master or the Tourist Information Centre. Always keep a look out for the direction of the tide while on the beach. Just be aware ... and if in doubt, move out!

Don’t: ditch your board – it will keep you afloat in an emergency and make you easier to find Don’t: go alone Don’t: go in if the conditions are above your capability.

Wills Wills & LPAs LPAs –AM MUST UST H HAVE AVE

At Silver and Ward we pride ourselves in giving our clients peace of mind with our expert legal advice explained in plain English. We work extremely hard during our lives to provide for family and loved ones. However, the majority of us fail to ensure that continues if we become unwell, or when we pass away. So, how can you guarantee that? (1) LPAs (Lasting Power of Attorney) – are a safety net for you and your loved ones if you were to be involved in an accident, or have a diagnosis leading to diminished mental capacity. It is incredibly important to have them in place no matter how old you are. As surprising as it sounds, your spouse, or partner, does not have any legal right to make health decisions on your behalf, or deal with your money and property if you are unable to.

(2) Wills – can help you to secure a future for those you leave behind. If you do not leave a Will the Law decides who will inherit your estate. This may not be what you want and it is unlikely to provide adequately for your family. A Will prepared by Silver and Ward can provide reassurance and peace of mind for you and your family and help reduce any risks and pitfalls that may arise in the future. We will write it in plain English to avoid any misunderstandings. We offffer fixed fees for Wills and LPAs so you know immediately how much it is going to cost and a FREE INITIAL APPOINTMENT. We can meet with you in your home, Nursing Home, or Hospital at no extra cost.

In the words of Benjamin Franklin “Never leave till tomorrow that which you can do today”.

The Strand Club

We were delighted to welcome back Eddie Anderson who was kind enough to step in when our scheduled speaker was unable to come. His talk was entitled ‘Templewood - a Shooting Box for a Gentleman’.

Sir Samuel Hoare, MP for Kensington and Chelsea, decided he needed to acquire some good shooting land for his leisure time and settled on an area of mostly trees between Northrepps and Trimingham known as Froghall. First of all an avenue of trees was planted along a rough track from the lane between the two villages. On the corner of the track was an old cart shed which he decided to convert to a dwelling - almost unheard of in the first part of the 20th century. A small wooden pavilion and tennis court were built long before the main house was! Samuel thought long and hard about the style of his new house, which would be situated at the far end of the track. He rather liked Versailles but finally decided this would be too ambitious (and expensive) for the wilds of Norfolk. He eventually decided on the Veneto style, rather Roman with columns and statues, and work finally got underway. It was completed in 1938 with Paul Paget, his nephew, and John Seely acting as architects. During this time Fred Grey lived on site in his gamekeeper's cottage and looked after the onsite pheasants, also planting more trees to extend the woodland. The house was built by Bullens who were descendants of Anne Boleyn! It cost £8,000 which was a huge amount at that time.

Samuel Hoare was sent as ambassador to Spain during the Second World War, the only MP to be out of the country for the entire war. He died in 1958 and left the house to his nephew Paul Paget who was 70 at the time. Paul married Verily Anderson who was a widow with 5 children, one of them Eddie, and they lived happily there for some years. Verily continued to live on in Templewood for a while after Paul's death but then invited Eddie to live there with his family and moved into the old cart shed, now a lovely home.

It was a most interesting talk with fascinating old photographs of the various family members and plans of the house from its conception to finished building. Our thanks go to Eddie both for entertaining us so well and for baling us out at the last minute.

Eddie invited us to visit Templewood and see for ourselves the wonderful painted ceilings and so on, which he has so ably described. This will take place in November in place of our Christmas decoration session! It was a unanimous decision by those present with a roar of "Yesss!" and a forest of hands in the air.

Details will be given at a later date but meanwhile, there being no meeting in August, our next meeting will be on 12 September when a representative from the Stalham Firehouse Museum will join us and tell us about their work there. It should be most interesting.

For further information about the Strand Club please contact either our Chairman, Jackie Hudson, on 01263 720866 or our Secretary, Chris Wood, on 01263 579433.

We only charge £2 entrance for visitors which covers light refreshments. Please come and try us out - we would be very pleased to meet you!

Cromer Soapbox Derby

Sunday 5th August - Racing from 1pm

This year’s Cromer Soapbox Derby has attracted entries from as far afield as Nottingham, and Bedfordshire and within the County of Norfolk from Kings Lynn, Hunstanton, and Thetford. Organisers are delighted with the response and still expect to receive more entries before the closing date 28th July and, as with last year’s, a few late arrivals on the day.

Event scrutineers say that they are happy to accept entries on the day as long as they arrive sharp at 11.30am when the scrutineering opens so thee is time to process them and make sure everything is in order. This year’s three main sponsors all from the electronic industry spearheaded by GTK an international

company based in Basingstoke, Hampshire, Westcotec Traffic Safety Systems based in Dereham and Seneye a specialist in water quality monitoring systems for fish tanks and ponds based in Norwich are joined by Jewson, Cromer who have sponsored the extra extension to the start ramp which is intended to make it both quicker and smoother for soapboxes who should then carry the extra speed down the course.

Entry forms are available from The Cottage, Louden Rd, Cromer or online at www.cromercarnival.co.uk Entries close on the 28th July but late entries could be accepted on the day if they arrive for the scrutineering at 11.30am. Racing starts at 1pm with the 3 classes racing to become the fastest soapbox of the day. Classes are 10 – 15 years, 16 -18 years and Adult.

There will be prizes for the fastest time in each class with the fastest soapbox also winning the Malcolm McGreadie Shield, which the winner hold for the year.

There is also a Concourse de Elegance competition with winners in each class being judged on the design of their soapbox and the driver’s costume.

The Sporting Car Club of Norfolk will be providing the timing and scrutineering for the event and are planning to bring along a number of cars for a static display.

Fire brigade request Cromer

RNLI help

Cromer’s inshore lifeboat ‘George and Muriel’ was launched at 13.30 on 4 July to assist the fire brigade. With the fire on the cliff tops near the old light house, more hoses were needed.

Photo: Chris Gill

With HM Coast Guard unable to get close enough with their vehicles, the lifeboat made two journeys to take extra water hose to the area.

The fire brigade have water supplies but needed to be able to take the hose up the cliff face to the fire area.

The lifeboat returned from its journeys at 14.20 and was soon made ready for its next launch.

New Era for Cromer Lifeboat

Cromer RNLI is moving into a new chapter of its life, doing things differently, with two coxswains. The station has chosen two long serving crew members to fulfil the role.

Ady Woods Ady Barker The two are Ady Barker and Ady Woods who have a vast amount of experience, with almost 50 years’ service between them with the RNLI, working their way up through the ranks from crew to Coxswains.

Besides carrying out their duties as Coxswain for the all weather lifeboat ‘Lester’, they are both able to helm the inshore lifeboat, as well as other valuable roles at Cromer RNLI.

Both are keen to continue promoting the role that RNLI Cromer has in the local community and to build on these foundations, whether helping the local fishermen or the wider public.

Hedgehog Haven

It's an extra busy summer with the hot dry weather so many hoglets are coming into care as the mothers cannot find any food or water so cannot feed their young, which means they are abandoning the babies or dying from starvation.

CT Scanner

has now been installed at Toll Barn Vets to help your pet’s diagnosis & treatment

CT scanners use radiation in the same way as x-rays but allow a complete 3D image of the pet with specialised software, thus allowing advanced reconstructions, including 3D skeletal, blood vessel and soft tissue reconstructions.

TOLL BARN VETS CARES.....

.....FOR ALL YOUR PETS

There are four in this litter, I have another litter of three who need syringe feeding and another litter of two. That's without the other hogs who are in care & need cleaning out etc. I'm also getting messages from all over the county about finding hedgehogs in trouble. I try to advise where the nearest rescue centre is but I have been told that all rescue centres are full to bursting like myself so please offer a shallow dish of water & meaty pet food. It can be a lifesaver to a mother and her hoglets.

Clapham & Collinge appoint Senior Solicitor Laura van Ree Clapham & Collinge has further strengthened its Private client team in North Norfolk with the appointment of senior solicitor and Wills & Trusts specialist Laura van Ree.

Formerly a partner at a large Norwich based Law Firm, Laura is an experienced Wills, Trusts and Probate Solicitor and brings with her a high degree of technical knowledge and expertise, notably having achieved the highest mark in the UK when undertaking the Society for Trust and Estate Practitioners Diploma (a hallmark qualification for professionals in this

Cromer WI

area of law). Laura's clients praise her ability to explain complex legal and tax matters in plain English, with both a friendly and pragmatic approach.

"Laura's appointment further enhances our Private Client standing and Clapham & Collinge's commitment to grow the business across Norfolk" said Lin Whitehead, Partner and Head of Private Client team. "I am delighted that Laura has joined the firm, as she is a very accomplished practitioner in her field and she will help us to continue delivering exceptional private client services to our growing North Norfolk client base''

Laura is a one of the region's most respected private client lawyers, as recommended in the Legal 500 (the leading guide to law firms in

the UK).

Laura said "I am absolutely delighted to be joining the highly regarded Private Client team at Clapham & Collinge. I am also particularly excited to bring the knowledge and expertise I have gained over the course of my career back to North Norfolk, a place where I happily spent a large part of my childhood."

Laura will be based at our North Walsham office, 46-47 Market Place, but she will have a client base across North Norfolk.

To find out more about the legal services we offer, or to book an appointment please call 01692 660230 or email info@clapham-collinge.co.uk Offices also at Sheringham and Norwich.

On 12 July we celebrated our 81st Birthday with cake and nibbles.

We remembered the Suffragettes who 100 years ago won the right for some women to vote. Our members wore purple/white/ green which are the colours associated with the movement and Angela Smith, one of our committee, gave an interesting talk about the aims and achievements of the women who fought so hard to get equal voting rights for everyone. In 1918 only women over the age of 30 who were householders, the wives of householders, occupiers of property with an annual rent of ÂŁ5 and graduates of British universities were granted the vote. It took until 1928 for all women over the age of 21 to receive the right to vote on equal terms with men.

Our speaker was Lindsey Bradford from the charity Extend. This is a charity set up to provide Exercise to Music and Chair Based exercise classes throughout the UK. Their mission is to promote health, increase mobility and independence by improving strength, co-ordination and balance. Everyone naturally loses around half a pound of muscle every year after the age of 25 and we need to exercise to build this back up. We had lots of fun exercising to music some standing, some sitting and using pom poms and streamers as we moved. It certainly left us looking forward to our tea and cake.

This month’s competition was the letter B and was won by Rosie Evans with appropriately a collection of buttons promoting Votes for Women. Brenda Boyd was second with a photograph of Barbados and Eileen Tucker was third with a Buddha. Other entries included brooches, bracelets, bees of various sizes, a butterfly and a model Sanders bus.

Visitors will be given a warm welcome on 2nd Thursday of the month in the Cromer Community Hall, Garden Street at 2pm and our next meeting is on 13 September when our speaker will be Keith Grisedale telling us about Blood Bikes, Rapid Response and Medical Transport Services.

Goats on a Slope now have their own merchandise danielwarricker@hotmail.co.uk

Local artist’s work to adorn range of souvenirs honouring popular Bagots magnets, mounted prints, postcards, key rings and coasters, all feature original artwork by Ian Richardson, a North Norfolk District Council employee who has what until recently was a hidden talent for drawing.

Goats on a Slope merchandise

North Norfolk’s famous herd of Bagot goats are now the stars of their own merchandise.

The popular goats, who spend the summer on habitat-management duty on the cliff at Cromer, have proved to be a popular draw for tourists – and fans can now take home some souvenirs of the herd.

The Goats on a Slope range of goodies, which include mugs, tea-towels, ceramic fridge 20

“I did panic when I was first asked to do this as no one really knew what kind of design was required and it was all a bit overwhelming. I do art mainly as a hobby!” Ian said.

“I tried a host of different designs before having an epiphany at 5.30am at my breakfast table of how the goats should look.

Day 27 July 27 at the North Norfolk Information Centre in Cromer when Ian was on hand to sign the merchandise. There are also some limited-edition prints available.

The merchandise follows last year’s ‘Goat Tote’ bag, which proved popular.

As well as being popular with locals and tourists, the nine nannies and 10 kids carry out an important habitatmanagement role. In the past, the cliff area has become overgrown, leading to a problem with litter embedded and snagged in bushes. The Bagot goats graze on rough materials rather than Artist Ian Richardson, left, and NNDC grass, and that helps keep Animal Control officer Mark Frosdick plant growth across the with some of the new merchandise area under control.

“It is so exciting to see my designs on items and it is a dream come true for me. I’m proud to be a part of the Goats on a Slope project.”

The range was officially launched on Norfolk

It has also negated the need for North Norfolk District Council to spend taxpayers’ money on keeping the cliff in good order. Cromer Times 546 July 28th 2018

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club News from the Club House ...

The continued support of members to play lots of games, with barely a day’s rest (and not a lot of success!), is appreciated by all team captains at the Club.

The games come thick and fast for the next two months until the end of the season. We even have six friendly fixtures arranged for 2019. It is wonderful that so many teams want to return to play each year. We must be doing something right! Finally, I can report some success! The NANSA team couldn’t find enough players against Felmingham but later in the week had a resounding 8-0 victory over Overstrand BC. All three rinks won comfortably with the best being Neil C, Edna and John B.

This was followed the next day by the visit of Stalham in the 1st leg of the 3 wood knockout cup. Wins on 2 rinks and a narrow defeat on the other gave Cromer a 57-43 shot advantage to take to Stalham for the 2nd leg on 30th July. Best rink was James, David G and Neil P. In friendlies we had a visit from Charlbury BC which was very close, both teams winning 3 rinks each. However, Charlbury were victorious by means of having the greater shot score, 82-104. Cromer’s winning rink was Captain Keith et al. It was rumoured the visit of Wymondham was cancelled due to the tea ladies being massive tennis fans! The ladies visited Thorpe Rec BC and with three guests were able to field 3 triples on a lovely afternoon. Cromer won 2 rinks to 1 and 52 shots to 45. Many thanks to Thorpe for their hospitality.

sett. Jean, Tony and Roger O did gain an honourable draw. Likewise, there was a 0-9 loss (26-65) to top of the league Wootton Park.

The EBA men’s team are still without a victory with a 0-5 (49-67) defeat at home to Lakeside Pilgrims and a 1-4 (45-64) loss at Suffield Park. Congratulations to Phil T, Derek, Roger O and Neil C for their win. Things didn’t improve on the visit to Cawston with a 0-5 (5593) defeat, rounded off with England’s defeat not long after the finish! A double bad evening. Members continue to compete in rounds of the Club competitions with several unpredictable results and some top quality bowling. I must also apologise for ‘demoting’ PRESIDENT Philip in the last edition. Can’t ‘upset’ him too much, we need all the willing volunteers we can get and we are blessed to have many in the Club. Thanks to them for their work so far this season.

New faces are always welcome at the Club. With the green open until the end of September there is still lots of time to come along at 10am any morning or 7pm on a Friday evening (bar open!) for a roll up and see what fun you can have. Membership fees work out at less than £3 per week (that’s less than the £3.50 one roll up costs for 2 hours). More info from Edna 01263 511155.
