Behind the motorbikes and bagpipes at the front, Miss Cromer Emma Thompson and her entourage, waved their way on the Cromer Flower Club float. In a display of unity between the two towns, the Sheringham Carnival 'royal' family came next.

These were the first in a glitzy and entertaining parade that made its way down Runton road and through the town.

Doors Open at Diverse Community On Sunday 2 September the community at Thornage Hall is open to the general public.

From 11.30am to 4pm the annual Garden Fete is an opportunity for those who live and work at Thornage Hall to share their experience of this unique community in the heart of North Norfolk.

Graham Allen Award entries span North Norfolk Entries to the building excellence competition run

This year’s Graham Allen Award entries run across the entire North Norfolk district and feature a wide range of styles and types of building.

Properties are spread from Holkham in the west to Waxham in the east and also include Bale, Cley, East Ruston, Fakenham, Holt, North Walsham, Trimingham, Trunch, Walsingham, Wells and Weybourne.

There are extensions, replacement homes, barn conversions, a mixed use development, a police station, a music and sixth form centre, a new village hall and restorations.

A total of 14 entries will be whittled down to

a shortlist later in the month. That shortlist will then be judged ‘on the ground’ by a panel including members of the NNDC Development Control Committee, the Cabinet Member for Planning and Mr Edward Allen, who represents the Allen family.

The Graham Allen Award has for the last 36 years celebrated best practice in design and conservation in the district. North Norfolk has a history of producing high quality innovative developments and sensitive renovation projects, which complement the district’s unique environment.

Originally inaugurated in 1982 as a memorial to the late Graham Allen, the first Chairman of NNDC, the award scheme has recognised a diverse selection of North Norfolk’s finest architecture. The award, in the form of a bronze plaque, is presented to the scheme considered to

Latest Book in the Yesterday’s Series

This is news of another book in the Yesterday’s series. It’s a book we’ve been waiting for, for the cold winter when there’s nothing on television.

Many of us, young and old enjoyed the previous two books Yesterday’s Loves and Laughter and Yesterday’s Hearts and Homes by Geoffrey Dixon. They were stories of life in the village and on the land in Norfolk in the nineteen fifties.

They are times that many of us remember well and love to hear stories set in that era. Many younger people have read them and have been very interested at how different life was then and they can sit back and consider how much things have changed since then.

This is the theme of Geoffrey’s new book, Yesterday’s Labours Lost in which he tells Robert Dennis’ story of his life spent in a Norfolk village working as a smallholder. Just 60 years ago the landscape of Norfolk with its farms, cottages, farm buildings, fields, trees and hedgerows, lanes and roads was so different.

The ways of caring for the land, the machinery used, the numbers of men employed on the farms, how the crops were sown, tended, and harvested, the nature and wildlife that was seen have all changed so much, as has life in a village and in our wildlife.

Yesterday’s Labours Lost is a book that can be recommended to young and old alike. First of all it’s a lovely story, enchanting and fascinating at the same time, about people we know so well and it is set in a village just like ours. But there is a message behind the story that will question where we are going now and there are questions you’ll be asking too.

As we say, it is a book that everyone will both enjoy and talk about afterwards.

The book should be in the shops in Cromer (Jarrolds), North Walsham (Showcase Gallery) and Stalham (Forrests) by September.

By the way a few copies of the Yesterday’s Love and Laughter and Yesterday’s Hearts and Homes are still available if you haven’t read them.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Charley, the cat with skin problems, is responding well to treatment and we hope that he will soon be given a clean bill of health. We always prefer to wait until a cat has completely recovered before putting them up for adoption, although this is not always possible. Should the cat have ongoing medical problems, for instance diabetes, this would be explained to the new owner before re-homing.

Re-homing has been slow recently, which is something which usually happens at this time of the year because people are taking holidays, but also because we have had such unusually hot weather. However, we have said goodbye to several kittens. Rufus, Leroy and Troilus have already left for new homes, while Joffrey, Jessie and Ulysses will have left by the time you read this article. We have many more cats and kittens waiting for someone to give them a home and, hopefully, as we are now experiencing our normal weather we will receive more enquiries for them.

The new pain relief procedures for cats being operated on or neutered at our expense are now fully operational with the five vets that we use, namely, Bridge, Westover and Glaven with whom we have accounts and Bure Valley and Miramar who neuter cats under our special neutering campaign. All five practices were delighted to be involved and are now able to send the cats out with syringes of pain relief when they leave their care. We provide the pain relief and syringes and they administer this without any additional charges to the branch. What stars!

We often get asked for help with feral cats, primarily to get them neutered, and we are only too happy to help in this way. However, if a cat is feral and someone asks if we can take it into care we do have to advise we are not able to help. To confine a feral cat in any way, especially in a cat pen, is cruel. We have on two occasions this year taken a cat into care which we believed was used to people only to find

Hedgehog Haven Meet Boris!

Boris was handed in by a member of the public to a worker at the National Trust in Brancaster as they were working this way the next day.

I was contacted and he came into my care weighing only 90gms.

He had a set-back needing treatment for a parasitic problem called coccidian.

Following treatment he now weighs 200gms and is doing well. There is usually more then one hoglet in a litter and as such he was feeling lonely so I have given him a substitute sibling to cuddle up to.

Saving Sighthounds

or worse – destroyed inhumanely by shooting or drowning. Lurchers are frequently left behind when travellers move on.

Grace on arrival There has been a lot of publicity in recent years highlighting the plight of greyhounds and their treatment at the hands of the racing industry.

Norfolk Greyhound Rescue (NGR) is one charity dedicated to rescuing these dogs as well as other sighthounds such as whippets and lurchers. They rescue dogs from Ireland where animal cruelty legislation and attitudes are less favourable to these dogs than over here.

These dogs are usually those who don’t make the cut for racing as well as those who are injured or puppies that are surplus to requirements. They risk being abandoned

NGR differs from other charities in that dogs are not accepted directly from the racing industry but from Irish rescue charities and placed in foster homes to be assessed and socialised. They are then ready to be matched directly with their forever homes and do not have to spend prolonged periods in kennels. This reduces the number of dogs returned as unsuitable as they have already been matched for temperament rather than chosen just for looks.

Hayley Pattrick and her husband Richard have run the charity for 3 years and in that time have rescued and rehomed 400 dogs as far afield as Kent to the north of Scotland. All prospective homes are checked and adopters pay £150 for their dog to help pay for vets bills, vaccinations and transport.

It actually costs as much as £265 to transport each dog from Ireland and prepare them

for homing.

New Centre for North Norfolk Riding for the Disabled

Our established charity has relocated from Weybourne to a new riding centre at Hall Farm, Sloley Road, Worstead NR28 9RS.

Starting on 11 September at 10am we offer local children with disabilities from two schools and some individuals, the opportunity to enjoy the therapeutic benefits from riding horses and ponies on a regular basis.

The transformations experienced by our riders is hugely rewarding for all involved. Volunteers feel they are giving something back to their local community, and riders gain a real sense of achievement, and a pride in their new-found skills.

Get Up and Go Yellow for EAAA

East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) is asking the public to help them celebrate National Air Ambulance Week (10-16 September) by taking part in their ‘Get Up and Go Yellow’ fundraising day on Thursday 13 September.

The charity wanted to host a day that anyone could get involved with anywhere at any time, and came up with the idea to donate and go yellow. Everyone can take part, either alone or with friends, family, work colleagues, schools, groups or whoever you want to get involved. All you need to do is get up and wear, bake, make, create and go yellow in homage to the charity’s yellow helicopter. EAAA is a charity providing a life-saving helicopter emergency medical service for the people of East Anglia. Each of their crews consist of two pilots, one doctor and a critical care paramedic. The crew take advanced

critical care directly to patients who have suffered life-threatening or life-changing accidents or medical emergencies.

Head of Community Fundraising, Stuart Wyle, said “This is a new initiative for us, and we really wanted to host something that would celebrate National Air Ambulance Week, but also EAAA as a charity, and we thought what better way than to turn as many people as possible across the region yellow, the colours of our wonderful H145 helicopter.

We can’t wait to see all the creative ways people think of to go yellow and raise funds.

All the money donated from the day will go towards helping us save lives across the region. Without your support we can’t do what we do.”

Making a Will

- The importance of having an up-to-date will

The simple definition of a Will is a legal document that sets out your wishes regarding the distribution of your money, possessions and property (known as your ‘estate’) after death.

Having a Will in place gives you peace of mind and legal assurance that your wishes will be carried out once you are gone so that you know your family will be taken care of.

Consequently, it’s important to regularly review your Will to ensure it’s still fit for purpose and reflects your current personal circumstances.

Although it is often difficult to think about the inevitable, having a Will in place is arguably one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your family. Not only can a will legally protect your partner, children and assets, it can also spell out exactly how you would like things handled after you have passed on.

We encourage our clients to review their Wills every three to five years, both to ensure that their wishes are up to date but also to consider changes in the law or tax system which may have a personal impact. By way of recent example, in April 2017 the government brought in a new Inheritance Tax (IHT) allowance. This allowance is essentially available on death to anyone leaving a residential property to their children, and is excellent news for many individuals and families who will see huge tax savings as a result. However, the legislation is complex

and Wills made prior to 2017 are often drafted in such a way as to prohibit or limit access to this new allowance. A simple thing such as an age contingency on a gift to children or grandchildren, i.e. for my grandchildren at the age of 18, could mean the loss of this allowance.

It is reported that 1 in 3 people in the UK die without having a written Will in place to protect their family and assets. If you die without a Will your estate will be distributed in accordance with the Intestacy Rules.

Writing a Will does not need to be a lengthy process, after the first appointment, initial draft Wills are usually sent out within 10 working days. Once you are happy with the Will, a further appointment is made for the Will to be signed and witnessed. It is then usual for the legal provider to hold a copy of the Will until it is needed by the family.

Today, blended families are more common than ever, with a growing number of step-families and blended families who are raising children from their previous and present marriages.

Northern Soul fans join Kaiden’s Big Fight

Northern Soul night, Keep the Faith, returns to Cromer Community Centre on 1 September.

The club itself may be all about classic soul music and dancing but, as always, proceeds from the event will be funnelled to a local charity. On this occasion, organisers and resident DJs, Piers ‘Hitman’ Hawkins and Trevor Half-Nelson are proud to be raising money for ‘Kaiden’s Big Fight’.

Kaiden lives with a condition called CHD, which affects his heart, and among other things, restricts his ability to regulate his body temperature.

Despite medical expectations, Kaiden has recently turned five and the charity that his parents established now not only provides equipment, medicines and trips out for other children living with CHD, but also raises money towards research into the condition.

For the first time, KTF will hold a raffle on the night, following the generous gift of a pair of weekend passes for the Sunny Hunny soul weekender in late November.

And in September, the Museum is open for FREE for BOTH Heritage Open Day weekends, Saturday and Sunday, 8/9 September and 15/16 September. Falcon will be running on both weekends (charge applicable), meet local author, Chris Crowther and board a wherry yacht on the first weekend, and see iconic Herbert Woods boats at the Museum on the second weekend.

With additional prizes donated by Holt Vinyl Vault, and Cromer Soul Club, the hosts hope this will be a record-breaking edition of KTF. Tickets (£5) can be purchased in advance from Cromer Tourist Information (cash only) and Holt Vinyl Vault, or on the door on 1 September. Doors open at 7.30pm.

CROMER Carnival 2018

Some of the most memorable floats included the Kazoo bubble machine float that blew thousands of bubbles all over the crowds. The inventively decorated boat themed floats, such as the RNLI’s and the Viking festival were great fun. Also the yellow submarine of HMS Splash and the hysterical crab and lobster “catching net” float from Sheringham Carnival. Cromer Church's 'Beautiful Creatures' was another favourite, with its inventive array of animal costumes from pandas to parrots.

The many dancing troupes were another clear highlight. These included Live and Let Dance, Marlene’s school of dance, and most memorably the dancing clown troupe of Anglia Academy of Dance and Drama.

I’ll end by mentioning the Fast Food group’s adorable sausage dog costume which undoubtedly caused a great stir.

A fun day out for all involved, and a credit to the hard work of the volunteers and businesses that made it another success.

Cromer Soapbox Derby 2018 The 4th Annual Soapbox Derby was the biggest yet. There were 25 participants from a wide range of backgrounds.

After the heavy damage suffered by Soapboxes last year, drivers this year seemed to take it a little more carefully.

Nonetheless, there were some exciting jumps from the ramp, and some close calls in the chicane. One highlight was when James Garwood, who did well in the first round, dramatically lost a wheel in the second.

The event was well attended, with several rows of spectators lining the fencing almost half an hour before the event’s beginning.

Anyone who regularly listens to local or national radio will have noticed a resurgence in the number of both classic disco and Northern Soul tunes permeating the airwaves.

Disco, in particular, having peaked in the late â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;70s, became the victim of a cultural backlash that culminated in the infamous Disco Demolition Night in Chicago in July 1979, when a crateful of dance records was exploded in the middle of a baseball field. By 1980, even New Yorkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s world-famous Studio 54 club had closed, Disco Sucks tee-shirts were all the rage and a combination of dreadful novelty records and changing production techniques saw the almost complete demise of the original scene.

So why is classic old-school dance music back in vogue in 2018? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most likely a question of demographics. A generation who remember getting down to the likes of Rose Royce, Tavares and Michael Jackson have grown up, married and watched their own children leave home. However, many of them still love the music and, given half a

chance, still love to dance. Luckily, radio programmers appear to have acknowledged the situation, and with the likes of Nile Rogers and Chic back on tour, and Abba resurfacing again

on soundtracks and in virtual form, interest in classic disco is snowballing.

Luckily for those living in North Norfolk, Cromer has become the regular host for discoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finest grooves at the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Rediscovery club

night. The event offers an opportunity to dance for an often-ignored segment of the population; music fans who feel they are too old to be standing in a queue outside a trendy Norwich night club, but are determined that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re way too young to spend every night sitting in front of the TV! Once every two months, Cromer Community Centre is transformed by smoke and mirror balls, along with a quadraphonic sound system, as five Rediscovery DJs dig through their vinyl collections to present a night of classic disco with a hint of funk and soul.

If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been yearning to revisit those days (or nights) when you could strut your stuff to proper dance music in a friendly atmosphere, then youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in luck - Rediscovery is back in Cromer on 22 September with North Norfolkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only regular disco club night. Bittern Line disruption ‘unacceptable’, says local MP Norman Lamb

Norman Lamb, Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, has written to Greater Anglia asking for answers over ‘unacceptable’ ongoing disruption to the service between Norwich and Sheringham.

In one week the service was terminated three times in Cromer, on the 3rd, 7th and 9th August. Passengers for East Runton and Sheringham, including the elderly, young children and tourists with heavy luggage, have reported being stranded in the pouring rain with no information or assistance.

Mr Lamb understands that an arrangement is supposed to be in place between Greater Anglia and Sanders Coaches so that train tickets for cancelled trains are valid on Sanders buses. However, one passenger reported being told by a Sanders bus driver that there was no such arrangement in place and they would have to buy a full price bus ticket.

Mr Lamb first learnt of the ongoing issue through complaints on Twitter, and has also received a number of correspondence from constituents about their experiences. After writing to Network Rail, who Greater Anglia have claimed are responsible for the disruption, Mr Lamb has written to Greater Anglia to

demand answers.

Mr Lamb said “I recognise that problems with the line may be the responsibility of Network Rail but it is clearly unacceptable to simply tell passengers that they need to get off in Cromer with no real explanation or guidance on how to get home.

“Clearly, there is a very real need to ensure that there is an adequate replacement service in place for passengers to be able to complete their journey when their train is either cancelled or terminated. This is particularly critical during the peak tourist season but I am also conscious that there are many elderly residents in North Norfolk.

“I recognise that one of the responses issued

by Greater Anglia is that they are introducing a new fleet of trains in 2019-2020, but there is clearly a very real need to resolve such issues as those outlined above now. Passengers cannot afford to wait for a new fleet of trains to prevent such occurrences again and, if it is true that the recent disruption was caused by problems on the track, then simply replacing trains will not resolve this issue.”

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club

Bedfordshire, bringing lots of players and guests for a lovely afternoon. The game ended all square with 3 rink wins each However, Cromer won with a greater shot score of 131 to 91. The winning rink included Captain Keith, Roger O and 2 guest players. The fixture at Buxton was cancelled, in the players’ interests, due to the extreme heat.

Well! What a season for the Club in the two evening

The Crabs Federation team played their final premier league game at Fakenham and lost 0-9 to finish the season with 12 defeats in 12 games and only 7 points!

The men’s EBA team completed their season with a 0-5 (35-75) loss at home to R G Carter.

Their record for the season is just as good (!)

- 14 defeats in 14 games for 6 points.

Apparently, this is not a league record low score (there have been worse teams?!) Captains Roger G and Neil P thank those players who supported them through a tough season, things can only get better!

More bad news followed with Jean N being unable to get enough players for the NANSA league game at Overstrand, so it has been re-arranged. However, better news in the next match as they travelled to West Runton for a 5-3, 50-48 shots victory. This was followed in very hot conditions with a 2-6 (46-52) loss at home to Holt Swifts, although again Cromer were depleted with only 8 players. We are not alone, though, as Felmingham couldn’t raise a team against us! The local ‘derby’ with Suffield Park ended with a 5-3 victory for us with a win, draw and loss on the 3 rinks and a 48-47 shot score.

We had a visit from Flitwick BC in

Sproughton BC were welcomed again, after a gap of 3/4 years, to play at Cromer. The green was still recovering from the heavy rain but played quite well. Especially for the visitors as they won on 5 rinks with 1 drawn for a 91-136 score line. Top rink for Cromer was David M, Pam, Tony and David G.

Unfortunately, the weather change to rain spoiled the visit of the County team to play us in memory of great club and county servant, Peter Bird, who sadly passed away this time last year. The result wasn’t important, County won, what was lovely was for lots of Peter’s bowls and club friends getting together with his family to remember him and raise funds for epilepsy research.

Members continue to compete in rounds of the Club competitions, with many nearing the semi -final stage. These players are through to the semi-finals. Ladies singles – Edna, Brenda and Chrissie.
