1940s WEEKEND 2018

The atmosphere in Sheringham, Weybourne, and Holt was sparkling with 1940s charm two weeks ago at the annual 40s weekend. For getting in the mood, an impressive musical line-up included the Skyliner Big Band, The Nightingales, Sarah Probert and more. Some visitors took the opportunity to enjoy some swing dancing or the jitterbug.. The people of the towns and many from outside them took to costume with imaginative results. Army officers were not all;

mechanics, school teachers, and more to be seen. Tailored suits, military regalia, waistcoats, dungarees and others in a huge variety of war rationing era utility clothes.

NNDC Scam Alert

North Norfolk District Council is currently experiencing a spike in the level of reports of ‘scamming’ incidents where council-tax customers are being asked for their bank details so they can be refunded for overpayment (some are pretending to work for North Norfolk District Council, another announced he was working on behalf of the Council for a company called GSM).

North Norfolk District Council is advising customers that it does not make calls to residents to ask for bank or card details. If in any doubt, customers should hang up and contact the Council on 01263 516071.

If customers have any concerns regarding information they have given over the phone, they should contact their bank or card issuer immediately. Report any such calls to Norfolk Police by calling 101.

1940s WEEKEND 2018 Continued from front cover...

Hair could come in victory rolls—double or with a side parting—or with a headscarf Land Girl or Rosie the Riveter style. A 1940s fashion show was held at St Andrew’s Church Hall in Holt. Vintage buses ferried passengers between the towns; army vehicles, trucks and motorbikes lined the streets. To cap it off was a military vehicle parade in Sheringham organised by Graham Deans and the Sheringham Carnival committee. North Norfolk Railway organised the event once again. Their impressive steam trains were a highlight of the two days. A chance to take a steamy trip back in time at the stations of the towns. NAAFI at Weybourne offered wartime rations and the surprisingly popular and supremely nostalgic Spam sandwiches. Another fun, and successful, weekend out for all the family.

Photos Provided by Isaac C-Knight and Robin Myerscough The 1940s weekend saw Tesco invite dancers from Ceroc Fusion to come and dance outside their store and help raise funds for Help for Heroes (totalled £170 raised).. The Ceroc dancers all got into the theme of the weekend and dressed in 1940s style also decorating their dance area with a radio bunker and some original 1940s items. Music was played each day from that era and attracted lots of attention with many taking photos whilst passengers waiting railway platform were also kept entertained.

Tesco have invited the dancers back next year where plans are already being put into place to extend the dance area and displays. There was a lot of interest in the dancing and where the local Additional Drivers classes take place. The nearest to Sheringham is North Walsham Community Centre, New Road, North Walsham, NR28 9DE. It's on a Tuesday night and runs from 7.30 to 10.30 with a beginners class starting at 7.30. Intermediate classes start at 8.30. Cromer Times 550 September 29th 2018

REMEMBERING THE 1918 ARMISTICE

Sunday 11 November 2018 marks one hundred years precisely since the signing of the armistice that brought an end to the First World War. In common with most rural villages, Thorpe Market lost 14 of their young men. Three are buried in the churchyard. Many of the names on the war memorials in the church had been present in Thorpe Market for centuries. Most of them have now disappeared, in some cases as a direct result of the Great War. We will be holding a service for Remembrance Sunday at 10.30am on 11 November. The church has so far managed to trace living relatives for 10 of the men who died, and we hope to see many of them at the service. A chance for ex village residents to renew old acquaintances. This is work in progress. We are preparing family trees, details of the homes they left behind and their military records, their regimental music. If you are a relative, or have information about any of those who died – please do contact us.

Cromer Air Cadets

We are still seeking information about Cecil Burdett who may have a Colby connection and the name Bates in his family, Hebert Keeler who died aged 36, having also fought in the Boer War and William Turner whose father came from Roughton.

Cromer Air Cadets would like to say a very big thank you to the Crab and Lobster Festival for the kind donation of £500 in 2017. The money was used to take our hard working cadets to participate in an activity day at Hilltop Activities Centre this summer.

The cadets volunteer at local events and charities and the Hilltop adventure day allowed a positive reward to the cadets. Please accept our appreciation for your donation! Air cadets meets every Monday and Thursday 7pm - 9.30pm in the Cadet hut next to Cromer Academy.

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY

After our summer break members were out in force in September to support the Autumn Show. After the very hot and dry conditions in June and July, it was remarkable how well gardens had recovered and members are to be congratulated on the quality of the plants on display. In the early spring all members were given a gazania plant for our Club competition and 18 plants survived the unusual weather conditions in the spring and summer and were brought along to be judged at the show. Mike Frostick’s plant was judged to be the best so well done to him. His wife Anne won the competition last year so the rest of us need to find out the secret of their success! Anne was also the winner of the vegetable section with a marvellous basket of mixed vegetables. Diana O’Shea was the winner of the flower section with her scented roses, Maggy Clover won the flower arranging section and Irene Nutt won the handicraft/cookery section. The best in show prize was won by Chris Bell for the overall quality of her entries. Our programme of talks resumes on 10 October when Trevor Harrison from South Creake Nursery will give us advice on ‘Late Autumn Colour’. Trevor always brings along plants to sell so it is worthwhile coming along to hear what he has to say and to stock up on plants suitable for the time of year. The meeting starts at 7.30pm in the Community Hall, Garden Street Cromer. All are welcome – members free, visitors £2.

Anna Watkins MBE Anna Watkins, who won gold in the double skulls at the London 2012 Olympics, was guest speaker at the awards ceremony held at St Andrew’s Hall, Norwich on Tuesday 4 September. The MBE told staff about her journey from state school student to Cambridge graduate, and how her university experiences uncovered a hidden talent and passion for rowing. Mrs Watkins told how she nearly missed out on her medals at both Beijing and London Olympics through illness, but battled through to reach the podium.

Staff also had the chance to get some rowing tips direct from the Olympian, thanks to a rowing machine set up at the event at St Andrew's Hall in Norwich, with staff competing to get the fastest 100m row. During the event, around 800 teachers and support staff from the Trust's schools in Cromer, Norwich, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, and Thetford also heard from chief executive Dame Rachel de Souza about the group's achievements over the last year and plans for the future. Dame Rachel paid tribute to outgoing Inspiration Trust trustee Lord Theodore Agnew and presented this summer's exam results which saw a 5% rise in Cromer Academy pupils achieving a Grade 5+ in English and maths. Developments for the coming months included a new sports centre at Cromer Academy.

Battle of Britain Day

The RAF ensign was unfurled in Cromer Churchyard on Saturday 15 September by Air Commodore Jack Broughton who also took the salute in remembrance and in celebration of the centenary of the Royal Air Force. He was joined by the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and David Russell.

Beach Mission celebrates 151 years

Lightlife (previously called Cromer Beach Mission) celebrated 151 years of missions last month.

The event was run by Scripture Union in conjunction with the Cromer churches. Hannah Beal, who has led the team since 2010, said “As usual, everyone had a great time. The focus this year was on Jesus’ miracles and prayer, using Scripture Union’s Guardians of Ancora holiday club material. In the L to R Hannah (Team Leader) and Claire morning there were fun (Team member from France) learning events, with craft, Photo: Nicholas Williams Bible and prayer activities. The ages ranged from three to sixteen. Each morning the younger children’s sessions were held at the Parish Church Hall in Church Street and the sessions for those aged eleven to sixteen were held at the Methodist Church in West Street, Cromer. On four afternoons, we ran events at Suffield Park for all ages, and on Wednesday afternoon held our yearly Tide Fight which is a family event on East Beach. Each team builds a large sandcastle and the winner is the last to stand against the force of the incoming tide.

Dear Margaret,

I am the Chair of the Cromer Twining Association. We are part of Cromer Town Council and we work hard to keep good connections with our twin towns in Germany and France. As we seek to leave the EU this work will prove to be increasingly important as we need to keep good relations with our near neighbours. Next July (4th to 8th) we will be welcoming visitors from Nidda and Crest to Cromer and are looking for people who are willing to act as hosts for our guests. This will give an excellent opportunity to build friendship with folk from these towns. What’s more, our hosts often receive invitations to visit their guest’s home town sometime in the future. If anyone thinks they can help with this, then they should please contact me on either Mike@Bossingham.com or 01263 513897. Yours sincerely, Rev’d Dr Mike Bossingham

There were three evening events for 13-16s at the Church Hall. New for this year we held a free family barbeque on East Beach, alongside a life size game of Cluedo on the prom and clifftop. It was a great event which was made even better by the warm weather that night and beautiful Cromer sunset. We served hot dogs and beef burgers all cooked on grills on the beach.

“The Thursday evening Ceilidh was a big family occasion as always, and held at the Parish Church Hall. We had more than 70 people, and The Whirlygig Band for the third time. It’s a really good occasion that everyone can enjoy. The dancers ranged from about two years old to about 80. The final event – Sand Sculptures - was on East Beach on Saturday afternoon. The winning sculpture was a Seahorse, with Noah’s ark, lighthouse and dolphin highly commended. All of our events are without charge, even the barbeque and the Ceilidh. Each year we find a practical way of demonstrating God’s love, and this year children were encouraged to bring new toothbrushes and toothpaste for children in a Hungarian orphanage.

“We had 23 team members altogether, plus support staff, who deal with the cooking for us. The team members who were not local stayed with various people in their homes. This year we had three team members who were part of Leeds University’s Christian Union and one team member from Lyon in France to help us and other missions. Many of the team members used some of their holiday to help us.

Divorcing couples forced to embellish allegations in divorce petitions

Making the decision to divorce can be an incredibly difficult one. Many couples will want the process to be as straight forward as possible at a time where emotions are running high. Unfortunately, the current legal framework can cause further complications for couples.

There is only one ground for divorce and that is that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. Currently, the law states that this has to be proven by relying upon one or more of the following facts: "unreasonable behaviour", adultery, desertion, 2 years separation with consent, or 5 years separation. If you have not been separated for the requisite period then you have a difficult decision to make. Either you wait, or you rely upon one of the other facts which means apportioning blame to the other party. "Unreasonable behaviour" is the fact most commonly cited but by its very nature can cause a whole host of problems in the relationship. It can cause animosity, cause problems in reaching solutions in terms of the finances and children and make it difficult to end a relationship on good terms.

The case of Tini Owens has been in the media spotlight recently as she tried to divorce her husband of 40 years on the basis of his "unreasonable behaviour". The Supreme Court unanimously

rejected her arguments and concluded that his behaviour was not sufficiently unreasonable to grant a divorce. Tini was understandably devastated by this news as she now has to remain married until 2020. A recent survey has found that couples feel pressured into exaggerating allegations in a divorce petition, or to "bend the truth", so that the reasons given are more likely to be found sufficient, if challenged. This is because couples are becoming more and more concerned that a petition could be rejected by the Court as was seen in the Owens case. Contested divorce proceedings are rare. In fact less than 1% of all divorces are defended each year. This is because it can be extremely costly, complicated and many view it as unproductive. Although the number of contested cases are relatively small, people are clearly concerned about it happening. This is probably due to the widespread reporting of the Owens case.

The Owens decision has prompted debate about the appropriateness of the current legislation and the need for review. Should you be forced to stay trapped in a marriage that you consider is over even if the other party doesn't agree? The current law makes it difficult to end a relationship on good terms, due to the requirement to apportion blame. This directly conflicts with other principles in family law such as reducing confrontation and conflict and encouraging couples to talk directly to find the right

solution for them.

In a recent survey of more than 1,000 divorcees, 80% said they would rather have the option of a 'no-fault' approach to divorce. More than 1 in 4 surveyed said that attributing fault caused more tension between them and their ex-partner, and reduced their previous hopes of being able to divorce in a friendly manner. Not only does the process of attributing fault add to their own anger, it can also cause upset to other parties, such as their children. If the law were to provide for 'no-fault' divorce, it may reduce bitterness between the parties meaning more amicably settlements which could save them time and money. However, some argue this approach would make the process of getting a divorce a lot easier, increasing the number of divorces and may be seen as an "easy way-out", but if the law isn't updated there may be a rise in exaggerated and embellished allegations which has its own problems! The Strand Club

he had found himself in.

It was all absorbing and fascinating, added to by Gordon's slides.

As a club we were delighted to present Jackie Hudson and David Witham with cheques for ÂŁ250 each.

The money was raised at a very successful coffee morning which we held in August. Jackie is the local Co-ordinator for Canine Concern and brought her two therapy dogs with her. They behaved impeccably throughout.

David is the Chair of the Fundraising Committee for our new local surgery which is crying out for funds for equipment, the NHS only being able to fund the building. David and his team helped enormously both on the day of the coffee morning and with items to sell notably homemade cakes.

We then welcomed Gordon Archer from the Stalham Fire Museum who talked most interestingly about his life and the life of the Firehouse. Built in 1833 at a cost of ÂŁ42 it was only the 3rd in the country. It had a lockup next door where drunken parishioners were kept overnight to calm down and dry out! On its 150th anniversary in 1983 a special weekend was held on the school playing field in Stalham with a dozen or so fire appliances of all vintages, charting the history of firefighting. With free entry and donations only a massive ÂŁ9000 was raised over two days. This ensured the continuation of the museum for many years to come. It sees on average 900 visitors each summer despite it is not being open every day.

There will be a picnic in memory of Jane Cheek on 22 September at Templewood. It will begin at 1pm and will have music from Claire and Will Reynolds throughout the afternoon. A marquee and gazeboes will be provided in case of rain.

L to R David Witham, Josie Dennis (Vice Chairman) and Jackie Hudson with speaker Gordon Archer at the back

Gordon brought along two helmets; one an extremely heavy brass one from the 19th and early 20th century and a later slightly lighter one made of compressed cork which superseded it when electricity came into common usage.

Gordon himself had worked in different parts of the country as a firefighter after his time in the Navy and then in the police force. His life has been devoted to helping those in trouble and we appreciated his gentle manner, full of humour despite some of the grim situations

The Strand Club's next meeting which is open to all will be February. This will be a talk by Clarissa Malpass from Co-op Estate Planning concerning inheritance tax, Lasting Powers of Attorney and other financial matters we should be aware of. The afternoon will begin at 2pm in the Sports Pavilion at Overstrand. We charge just ÂŁ2 for entrance and look forward to meeting potential new members. Phone me, Chris Wood, on 01263 579433 for further information.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

On Tuesday 4 September, after a delicious lunch, we were treated to a very interesting talk about the North Norfolk Railway by Mr Trevor Eady.

After retiring from aviation, in 2006 he became a volunteer guard on the NNR and eventually became General Manager (now retired). Under his watch more trains were added to the timetable as were many more special events, such as the Dad’s Army weekend.

The 1940s weekend is also a great success as so many businesses in Sheringham are now also involved, as well as the general public.

The Santa Specials are also popular but now suffer competition from elsewhere!

The NNR now attracts more than 166,000 visitors a year and has 376 volunteers as well as 55 staff, amongst several departments, of which engineering is the largest.

Trevor also told us more about the engineering side of the business and showed us slides of many locomotives, both steam and diesel. Bringing in ‘new’ locomotives is a major operation, as anyone who lives or works near Sheringham’s main car park can attest! Trevor told us a lot more about the NNR, including the fact that Weybourne station (proudly involved in a Dad’s Army episode!) is the only place on the line with two tracks. There were a good number of questions after this excellent talk, and Trevor was thanked by our Chairman, Michael Webb.

Our next meeting will be at The Links Hotel, West Runton on Tuesday 2 October, when David Morton will speak to us on "The Tower of London". If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our future meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

State-of-the-art Community Sports Hub moves a step closer Planning permission granted as District Council works to make North Norfolk an even better place for sport The building of a brand new £3.2m Community Sports Hub for North Norfolk moved a step closer today with the granting of planning permission.

and sought to provide indoor tennis courts, which have historically existed in Cromer and for which there has been long-term demand.

The decision by the Development Committee at North Norfolk District Council means another hurdle has been cleared in the bid to provide the community with state-of-the-art facilities, including three indoor tennis courts, a 25-station gym, a social area and viewing gallery, and a space for fitness classes, social activities and meetings. The Sports Hub was identified in the council’s Indoor Sports Facility Strategy, published in 2015,

The Community Sports Hub will build on the existing relationship between the council and the CLTSA, with the association already receiving a subsidy of £25,000 a year from NNDC. With the council’s events between financing for the new development already in place and planning permission now granted, the scheme is now just waiting for the LTA to confirm its funding and for the CLTSA to give its backing to a land swap that has already been

It is a joint project, with NNDC working alongside the Lawn Tennis Association, which it is anticipated will fund about 25% of the cost; Cromer Academy; and the Cromer Lawn Tennis and Squash Association (CLTSA). The new tennis courts will be available for use by the public, members of the CLTSA and academy students.

agreed by NNDC and the academy.

Cllr John Lee, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and a Conservative Ward Member for Suffield Park, said “As a local member, I’m really excited at having this fabulous facility built in my ward. As Leader of the Council, I'm extremely proud of the investment that we are committing to this project, which will provide first-class facilities for North Norfolk’s tennis players and prospective players, but more importantly offer year-round opportunities for our young people. I expect the indoor courts will become the envy of the county and beyond.” Cllr Nigel Pearce, a Lib Dem Ward Member for Suffield Park, said “The commencement of constructing this sports hub will benefit the entire community” Cllr John Rest, Leader of the Independent Group at NNDC, said “ In any new development there is always going to be controversy but this new venture will provide cost-effective facilities for all generations to benefit from. We have to be supporting and offering opportunities to our sports players of the future.”

TRUSTEES NEEDED FOR LOCAL CHARITY September 2018

Have you been wondering about volunteering for a good cause, but want to using your particular skills?

Newly retired with some energy and enthusiasm, or in work but wanting to “give something back” to your community?

Age Concern North Norfolk, based in Sheringham, is a small charity that supports the elderly in the wider area (some with early dementia) with a Day Centre Hub, Intergenerational activities and a Drop In Service.

If you have current or past financial, business, HR or administrative expertise, your skills will be particularly valuable, but we welcome expressions of interest from all individuals over 18 years of age who are willing to commit regularly approximately 4 hours a month to Cromer Times 550 September 29th 2018

Website: www.baileysestates.co.uk

volunteering with us as a Trustee. This time includes our monthly trustees meeting and some extra time using your own particular skill set. This might be to help with fund raising or other tasks.

Trustees usually serve initially for a period of 3 years. You will be joining a team of dedicated people who will offer support. We will value your unique skills and innovative ideas. We hold a trustees meeting monthly on a Thursday in Sheringham.

If you are interested, please contact ageconcernmanager@gmail.com or phone 01263 821188

There will be an informal interview process and a chance for you to ask any questions of your own.

We look forward to meeting you. Jennie Cummings-Knight, Chair Age Concern North Norfolk

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club News from the Club House ...

At last this season, some major success. Congratulations are due to the team who travelled to Erpingham BC green and defeated Overstrand 65-30 in the NANSA 3 wood knockout cup. Skipper Neil P was presented with the Jim Tubby Triples Cup after the fine victory. Cromer won comfortably on 2 rinks with David M, Les, Bob (26-5), James, David G and Neil P (23-8). Phil T, Tony and Roger O worked hard to keep their deficit down to just a 1 shot loss (16-17). After such a poor season in the leagues this win was very welcome. Thanks to Overstrand for a good evening of bowls, to Erpingham for their facilities and refreshments but especially to our merry band of supporters. We couldn’t have done it without you!

We travelled to St. Faiths BC in Norwich for a fun ‘roving cot’ game. Jack, Russell and Neil P love the informal format and were best rink for Cromer, winning 19-14. Cromer had one other rink win with St. Faiths winning 2. Overall, we lost 67 shots to 79. The visit to Swanton Abbott BC saw us win on 1 rink with Brenda, Arthur and Kathleen but lose the other 2 rinks. The final game of the season saw the visit of Holt BC. The game went Holt’s way, 61-105, but Jean S, Brenda and Neil P were happy to get their first top rink of the season with a last end victory!
