Trevor Harrison from Creake Plant Centre was the speaker at our October meeting and his subject, very appropriately, was ‘Late Autumn Colour’. As usual Trevor brought with him a range of plants to show us and this made his presentation more meaningful as there is nothing to beat seeing the plants themselves.

Salvias are a popular choice as they will flower from July through to the first frosts in early winter. They should not be cut back too hard when flowering finishes as they may not survive the winter but if pruning is left until the spring then they are as hardy as anything. ‘Hotlips’, ‘Amistad’ and ‘Phyllis’ Fallacy’ are three varieties to look out for. Salvias root easily from cuttings taken in July and August so it is possible to build up a good collection in a few years. Michaelmas daisies can be seen in many gardens and these days it is possible to buy varieties that are mildew resistant so one of the problems associated with them over the years can now be avoided. They are good for flower arranging which is a bonus. ‘Mt Everest’ is a white variety while ‘Alma Posh’ is a deep cerise. ‘Little Carlow’ and ‘Norman’s Jubilee’ are low growing, clump forming varieties for the front of the border. If you have moist conditions then Kaffir lilies are a good bet and these too are good for flower arranging. Continued on page 4...

Continued from front cover... Prairie planting has been popular for some time and is well suited to autumn flowering. This usually involves combining grasses with lower growing plants such as heleniums, echinacea and red hot pokers. Miscanthus nepalensis is a grass that will grow to six or seven foot tall and form a marvellous backdrop with its golden plumes to offset the vibrant colours of lower growing plants. Aconitums such as ‘Cloudy’ are good in shade as are Japanese anemones such as ‘Queen Charlotte’. Chrysanthemum ‘Dixter Orange’ is early flowering and flowers will last until November.

Autumn flowering bulbs are an option if space is an issue. Colchicums or autumn crocus are very reliable and the confusingly named ‘Waterlily’ was recommended. Nerines are not everyone’s favourite as some think their bright pink colour is rather garish but they certainly Salvia ‘Hotlips’ catch the eye when allowed to form large clumps. White varieties are available but nowhere near as much fun. If you prefer shrubs then look no further than euonymus alatus ‘Blade Runner’ which has bright red stems in autumn or abelia grandiflora with its mass of fragrant, pink tinged white flowers.

If the armfuls of plants that members took with them at the end are anything to go by then the evening must be seen as a roaring success. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 14 November at 7.30 pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. It will start with our AGM and then we will hear from Greg Bond from Butterfly Conservation. His topic is ‘Beautiful Butterflies and Amazing Moths’. At a time when biodiversity in our gardens is so important it should be a timely reminder of the need to protect and encourage these wonderful creatures.

Autumnal Village Feast at Thorpe Market

On Saturday 6 October sixteen folk gathered together for an Autumnal Feast in our Village Hall.

We had a lovely home cooked Beef Cobbler potatoes and two veg followed by BlackBerry and Almond tart or meringues with forest fruit.

We were asked nicely to sing for our supper while Liz and Dick whizzed to and fro with all the goodies - very handy being next door to the Hall!

After the super meal we held a raffle followed by Autumnal games well done Tony, he's our champ.

We all know how stressful the firework season can be for our pets so here at Toll Barn Vets we have a few helpful tips to help keep pets as calm as possible. Animals have very sensitive hearing and loud bangs can be painful whilst the flashing lights can be scary. Always keep dogs and cats indoors during fireworks and make sure dogs are walked earlier in the day to avoid being out when fireworks are let off. Many pets go missing at this time of year when they get scared by fireworks so make sure all pets are easily identified with a collar and tag or microchip (with up to date contact details) so that they can be reunited with you if they get scared and manage to run off.

It can help to build your pet a safe den and keep windows, doors and curtains closed to minimise noise as much as possible. Some pets will find it comforting to have an alternative noise so keeping the radio or television on can help to reduce awareness of the sound of fireworks. Pets will often look to you for reassurance during stressful situations so try to act as normally as possible and make sure not to tell pets off if they are behaving in a stressed manner during fireworks. It is also important to reward calm and relaxed behaviour with cuddles and treats! There are also several medicines and techniques which can be used to reduce anxiety around firework season. Pheromone-based and natural calming products come in several varieties including plug-in diffusers, tablets, liquids, collars and sprays. These products can help pets feel more relaxed and calm within the environment and should ideally be started at least 48 hours (preferably longer) before fireworks are due to start. Noise phobia CDs are also available and are designed to gradually reduce sensitivity to loud sounds over a long period of time in the run up to Firework Night.

It’s also important to remember small mammals such as rabbits and guinea pigs as well as birds during this stressful season. These pets can also get easily scared and if possible these pets should be moved into a quiet room or shed. If this is not possible cages should be covered to reduce the sound of the fireworks and turned to face a wall so the firework lights are less visible. It is essential to ensure enough ventilation still remains underneath the cover. Make sure pets have enough bedding to burrow and hide in should they feel stressed.

St Marys helps MacMillan

Members of Macmillan Cancer Support North Norfolk Committee were delighted to be invited to a school assembly at St Marys C. Of E Primary School at Roughton to receive the proceeds of the Coffee Morning that the pupils had held for grandparents and friends. The fundraiser was a great success - the children made most of the cakes and a wonderful profit of £135 was raised.

Cromer Dementia Friendly Project Re-Launch Friday November 16th, 11.00 am with Norman Lamb MP

The re-launch of Cromer Dementia Friendly Initiative on November 16th is in association with Age Concern North Norfolk, based in Sheringham.

Our Pop In group in Cromer is being re-launched to incorporate a Dementia Friendly Event once a month on a Friday, 10 am-12 noon. Dementia is increasingly observed amongst our older people. Activities such as the Intergenerational Learning project help reduce the advancement of dementia through active minds and improved well-being because of reduced social isolation. This includes older people who may be resident in shelter accommodation/ Residential/Nursing Homes, where significant periods of time are spent alone and in isolation within their own rooms.

With the assistance of Cromer Town Council who have awarded Age Concern a grant of £1000 to get the new project up and running, we are re-launching our Older People Pop In weekly event. Age Concern North Norfolk is an entirely selffunded local charity, run by volunteers with only one full time fully paid member of staff.

We have several other members of staff who are paid on a part time basis. The board of trustees are all volunteers and receive no remuneration for their time. Age Concern operates from a Day Service Hub in Sheringham (35b Cremer Street) and offers a range of other services including a Keep in Touch group in Sheringham, a Drop-In-

to-Befriend Service, and Home Support services Our Dementia Friendly initiative will run alongside our Intergenerational Projects already functioning in conjunction with several local schools.

In 2017 Age Concern NN completed an initial Intergenerational project. The aim was to develop stronger links within our community between different generations by building partnerships with local schools. The Intergenerational groups give opportunities for social interaction and development of new friendships between older people and young members of the community. It is recognised that having a healthy and active mind helps reduce the likelihood or advancement of dementia and reduces levels of depression and loneliness.

The Cromer Dementia Friendly initiative, which began with an informal base at Halsey House in 2013, concentrated on offering free Dementia Friendly training to local businesses, in conjunction with Age UK (an entirely separate national charity). With the re-location of the manager of the Danbury Lodge Unit at Halsey House in 2017 to Norwich, the Cromer project is being re-branded and now comes under the auspices of Age Concern North Norfolk. Beryl Graveling

1 August 1927 – 5 September 2018

The Thanksgiving Service for Beryl Graveling was held at St Martins Church, Mill Road, Cromer on Monday 17 September at 2.30pm.

The Service was very well attended with members from St Martins and Cromer Parish Church and past members from Beryl’s physiotherapy staff. Beryl had led a very active life and had made improvements in the Physiotherapy Service and had also been instrumental in organising the first Paraplegic Games when she worked at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

Beryl had received an Honorary MA at the University of Norwich for her work in the physiotherapy field. Born in Cromer, she was one of four children, three girls and one boy – Beryl, Edna, Jean and John. Her father worked on the railway (every small boy’s dream being to be an engine driver). Beryl became Area Superintendent of the Norwich Health Authority.

The Service was opened by Rev Darren Thornton who gave the welcome and introduction. Bible readings were read by Robert Horsley and Liz Graveling. There were reflection from Beryl’s nieces and nephew – Sarah Williams, Richard Graveling and Ruth Anderson. A reflection on Beryl’s time at Holy Trinity Church in Norwich was given by Rev Gordon Bridges who was Vicar when Beryl attended the church. John Graveling gave the Address and Prayers were said by Hannah Patton.

Beryl had led a very active community and church life and was a beloved member of the Graveling family. She will be sadly missed. Soul Club celebrates anniversary with Northern all-dayer

Over two nights of Northern Soul during the summer, Cromer Soul Club raised a whopping £1,006.85 for Norwich-based Norfolk Centre for Young Musicians (NCYM). The Keep the Faith vinyl-only nights, which took place at the club’s regular venue, Cromer Community Centre, each attracted around 100 soul fans, who danced the night away to classic Northern and Motown tunes courtesy of resident DJs Piers ‘Hitman’ Hawkins and Trevor Half-Nelson. The club may be all about the music, but from its inaugural event back in late 2017, the organisers have always donated profits to DJ Piers ‘Hitman ‘Hawkins presents a local charities. The club chose to donate to NCYM because of the cheque to NCYM head Juliet Rickard centre’s work to offer top-quality music tuition to children from all backgrounds. Through its bursary scheme, NCYM ensures financial background never excludes talented and enthusiastic youngsters from access to excellent teaching providing them with the experience of playing in groups and orchestras alongside other young musicians. To celebrate its first anniversary, Cromer Soul Club will be hosting an all-dayer (3pm-Midnight) on 3rd November, where resident DJs will be joined by guests from other clubs around the region. In keeping with previous events, the club will be giving away some merchandise, in this case, Keep the Faith stickers, and organisers have also negotiated discounts at a couple of local food outlets for those who dance up an appetite. Trevor Half-Nelson commented: “With nine hours to play with, we’ve decided to mix in a little more Motown and crossover soul this time.” He added: “Our most recent night in September sold out, so we are encouraging people to buy tickets in advance. The scones, jam and clotted cream had been supplied by The Old Rock Shop Bistro who did us proud with the Spring Lunch in May. Our thanks go to them for their hard work. The scones were very tasty and

The committee had decorated the Pavilion with a Halloween theme which consisted of ghoulies and ghosties on the tablecloths and plates and our Chairman wearing an oversized spider in her hair! She had made four lovely flower arrangements to grace the tables which were then raffled afterwards. The arrangements were orange and black, matching the theme beautifully.

Our next meeting will be tea and cake at Templewood, when Eddie Anderson will introduce us to an amazing ceiling in one of the rooms. Members should meet outside the Pavilion at 1.30pm on 14 November in order to pile into cars for the short ride to Frogshall.

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society has been particularly keen to commemorate the centenary of the First World War over the last 4 years. The choir will mark the centenary of the Armistice on 11 November 1918 with the Sheringham Armistice Centenary concert in St Peter’s Sheringham on Saturday 10 November 2018 at 7.30 pm. The singers, directed by David Ballard, will be joined by soloists Rosamund Walton (who coincidentally sang the words of Edith Cavell at the 2014 Sheringham Remembrance concert) and Julian Chou-Lambert together with an invited chamber orchestra.

The concert will feature suitable Music for Remembrance including Ralph Vaughan Williams very moving Dona Nobis Pacem which he wrote in 1936 pleading for peace by referring to previous wars during the growing fears of a new one. The work includes texts from poems by Walt Whitman and from the book of Jeremiah. The programme also includes Gabriel Fauré’s much loved Requiem with its focus on eternal rest and consolation. The choir will also perform a short piece called Christian Soldiers which is from the opening movement of Patrick Hawes’ Great War Symphony which had its world premiere in the Royal Albert Hall on 9 October. This provides a very apt link back to the choir’s 2014 commemorations when the choir commissioned Patrick Hawes to write Eventide – in Memoriam Edith Cavell to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

This concert which is part of Sheringham’s overall Armistice Centenary events is performed in collaboration with COAST Arts and promises to be a most memorable commemoration of the Armistice centenary.

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB

On Tuesday 2 October, after an excellent lunch, we were treated to a talk by David Morton, about The Tower of London - a journey through its history up to the present.

He began with a slide showing the 2014 display, in the grassed-over Moat, of nearly 900,000 ceramic poppies, representing British and Commonwealth military fatalities in WW1. He then showed us a plan of the area known as ‘The Tower’, which in fact covers 18 acres and includes several buildings and the Moat. Over its history it has been a royal residence, the headquarters of the Royal Mint, that of the Treasury, the Public Records Office, an armoury, the site of a menagerie (early 1200s to early 1800s), and is now the home of the Crown Jewels. Before the 20th century, only seven people had been executed at the Tower but during the two World Wars there were further executions, for treason and spying. However, it has become less sinister since then and in 1974 UNESCO designated it as a ‘place of historic interest’. In fact, in 2017, 13.1 million people visited it. Much more was described (including the presence of the ravens!) and there were a good number of questions after this excellent talk. David was thanked by our Chairman, Michael Webb.

Annual National Walkers are Welcome Get Together and AGM supported the event and all a real success for Cromer A group of people walking is known as an amble, but at this monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Walkers are Welcome annual national get together in Cromer the pace was certainly not slow, and the weekend clearly showed the passion there is for walking. Sixty delegates came from across the country to Cromer for a packed itinerary showing off the best of the town and area; delegates came from near and as far afield as Ross-on-Wye, Moffat, Kirkby Stephen and Henley-on-Thames. The wonderful mix of delegates all brought a strong view with them: "walking is good for all and their locales are set up to welcome walkers". They all took home the knowledge that the walking around Cromer is worth travelling for, and the town is a somewhere special. The objective for Walk Cromer, the local organising team, was that delegates took home the message that Cromer was worth the journey: mission accomplished!

New illuminations set to celebrate Norfolk landscape A stunning display of light is set to illuminate Humphry Repton’s vision for Sheringham Park, as the National Trust celebrates the last great landscape designer of the 18th century, in what is regarded as the best surviving example of his work in the country.

For seven nights this November, spectacular light installations will highlight Repton’s views in the landscape, enabling visitors to experience Sheringham Park in an entirely new light.

Malcolm Fisher, the National Trust’s Visitor Experience Manager at Sheringham Park said; “It’s fitting in the bicentenary year of Repton’s death, his work is celebrated for all to enjoy. Repton Revealed is a new addition to our 2018 programme and one that we hope will be a highlight for many. It will not only showcase the beauty of the natural landscape, but the work of art that it has become.”

The National Trust has been working with an international team of artists including Richard Milner and Tundra, to create this site specific lighting installation in Repton’s home county. As visitors walk the mile long route, Repton’s story will be brought to light. And just as Repton designed his landscapes, the installations will build to a big reveal, befitting to what Repton himself described as his ‘most favourite work’.

Repton delivered his vision for Sheringham Park in 1812, in one of his famous red leather books, of which only 200 survive. In that book he wrote ‘Sheringham possesses more natural beauty and local advantages than any other place I have ever seen’.

Repton’s designs were left for others to oversee, adapt or ignore, and so it’s not surprising that they sometimes turned out rather differently to the way he imagined. However, at Sheringham Park, the parkland is still essentially his work. The National Trust continue to manage the landscape to the vision he set out, a natural landscape of trees, lush flowers, and carefully planned vistas that take in some of the most beautiful landscape in Norfolk. Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

Our President welcomed 50 members and seven visitors to our October meeting. After we sung Jerusalem, our speakers for the afternoon were five ladies from Pollard and Read in Holt.

They arrived with a full-size skeleton and lots of bras for us to look at as well as other items for their range of lingerie and nightwear.

The title of their talk was ‘The Importance of the Bra’. Firstly we were told how bad posture can cause so many health problems. This was where the skeleton came in showing us which parts of us can be out of line with bad posture. The next thing we learnt was that you shouldn’t measure yourself for a bra as all brands are different, you can only find the right fit by trying them. If you wear the wrong size this can impact on your posture and health. Just a 7lb weight change either up or down will change the size you need. It was a very entertaining talk and we learnt a lot about one of the most important items of clothing we wear.

The competition was ‘An item beginning with D’ - 1st was Lyn Corke with a Diamond Art picture and we had two ladies tying for 2nd place - Rosie Evans with a Didgeridoo and Sue Stoneman with a cute Dalmatian Dog soft toy.

Our next meeting is on 8 November which will be our Annual Meeting. All ladies are welcome, it costs £4 as a visitor and we start at 2pm in Cromer Community Hall.

On Tuesday 30 October we are presenting a cheque to a representative of the British Heart Foundation’s Sheringham Branch as a result of last year’s fundraising for the President’s chosen charity.

We are also giving the sum of £150 to Amanda Veal of ‘Little Star’. Amanda, with help from anyone who joins her at Holt Community Centre, recycles wedding dresses into Angel Gowns for the parents of stillborn or early death babies. They also knit blankets and clothing.

Having been through a very hard time in her life, Amanda provides companionship and activities to others. This money will help to provide necessary sewing equipment and materials.

Hedgehog Haven

This little hoglet came into care on 12 September. With his eyes open and teeth through, he was approximately four weeks old.

The poor little boy was found nudging his deceased mother who unfortunately had been killed by another animal. With the time for hibernation approaching, at only 90 gms even with his mother, it would be unlikely that he would have survived, He is doing well and will be with me over winter.

Bonfire night is fast approaching - a nice big pile of wood makes an excellent home for a family of hedgehogs, so please, before lighting your bonfire, check underneath for any animals nesting there. Thank you.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club News from the Club House ...

Around 20 members attended the AGM for some interesting discussions on the state of the Club.

The President was fulsome in his praise for all in the smooth running of the Club particularly Edna, Jackie, Brenda, Janice, Jean N, Keith, Bob A, Neil P, Roger G and Neil C plus assistants. Members echoed the sentiment in praise of Philip.

Most of the main post holders were happy to be re-elected with Tony G taking on NANSA captain, Chrissie the Ladies captain and only the post of Club and Friendly captain remaining to be filled. Members were keen to remain in three leagues and for us to continue with the same number of friendly fixtures (about 30). Finances have remained stable and the Club playing membership fee is to remain at the bargain price of £65. So, the general opinion is that the state of the club is GOOD!

The indoor season, led by John B, has started with 17 members attending. Playing standards varied as participants moved onto the short mat with differing degrees of success!

All members, new and old, are warmly invited. This is purely for social and fun purposes on the short mat in the clubhouse, although games are often keenly contested amongst the laughter and banter! Every Wednesday sessions start at 2pm and usually last until 4pm - 4.30pm, with refreshments during the afternoon. Cost is £1.50. More info from Edna 01263 511155.

JORDAN’S REMARKABLE COME BACK ENDS GODFREY’S CHAMPIONSHIP DREAM Thirty four year old Matthew Jordan, the No.4 seed is Cromer Squash Club’s new champion. In the final on Friday evening he became the nineteenth different player to hold the prestigious title since it was instigated in 1981 as he staged a remarkable comeback to overcome the skilful challenge of the veteran Phil Godfrey who, like Jordan was playing in his first final, 4-9 6-9 9-6 9-0 10-9.

Godfrey who last year was runner up in both the club’s Over 35 and Veterans tournaments went into the final as the firm favourite, especially as he had defeated fellow veteran Sean Moore in the quarter-final and the four times former club champion John Baker in the semi-final and this favouritism appeared justified as he opened up a 2-0 lead by taking the opening two games 9-4 9-6.
