Lest We Forget
This year’s Remembrance Day marks 100 years since the end of World War 1 in which 886,000 members of the British Military perished. 15,500 of those were from Norfolk. Handmade poppies, one for each individual killed, went on display at St Peter Mancroft Church in Norwich. Organiser Sarah Salmon, project co-ordinator for Norfolk County Council’s Libraries and Information Service, had the idea for the display a year ago and the poppies have come in from all over the county and abroad, each one unique but together make MEAL, TICKET & a stunning and TRAVEL thought provoking display. As Sarah Sea Marge Hotel Overstrand herself remarked, “a fitting tribute”. £73.50pp -Meal, Ticket, & Travel £43.50 Ticket Only

Roughton Benefice WW1 Centenary Commemorations
There are seven churches making up Roughton Benefice - Bessingham, Felbrigg, Hanworth and Gunton, Metton, Sustead and Roughton with Rev Janet Frymann as Rector.
Churchwardens and helpers have created displays to commemorate the WW1 Centenary and those who are named on the village War Memorials and also those who served, who are named on the villages’ Roll of Honour boards.
There will be Remembrance Services across Roughton Benefice on Sunday November 11th to mark the centenary of the Armistice in 1918. Felbrigg at 9.30am on The Green, in Roughton at 10.50am in St Mary’s Church and in Hanworth at 10.50am in The Memorial Hall. Hopefully ancestors of those who served will be able to pay their respects at one of these services. The memorial displays are in Bessingham inside the church, in Felbrigg there is a stone memorial on the village green, in Gunton a scroll inside the church, in Hanworth a wooden roll of honour inside the Memorial Hall, in Metton a stone memorial outside the church, in Roughton a stone memorial inside the church and in Sustead there is a roll of honour inside the church. Many memorials have been expanded to include those who died or served in World War 2.

North Norfolk District Council install WW1 Tommy figures
The figures will raise money for armed forces charities
A third Tommy has been erected in Holt Country Park and a fourth, smaller 30 centimetre Tommy has been installed in NNDC’s main reception.
Three six foot tall Tommy silhouettes have been installed on land belonging to North Norfolk District Council as part of the centenary commemorations of the end of World War One.
North Norfolk District Council’s Cromer office has become home to two of the silhouettes, which have been created as part of the ‘There But Not There’ 2018 Armistice project for the charity Remembered.
The project is described as being 'the defining centenary commemoration of the end of the 1914-18 war' and aims to commemorate, educate and heal.
By purchasing the three Tommies, NNDC has helped fund such veterans’ charities as The Royal Foundation’s Armed Forces Programmes, Help for Heroes, The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation and many more.
The life-sized Tommy figures will stand alongside the existing 'Poppies in Steel' metallic sculpture installed in 2015 to commemorate centenary of World War One.
A service of remembrance for staff and elected members was held to officially dedicate the Tommies on 9 November.
North Norfolk District Council is also marking the Armistice centenary by giving packets of Flanders poppy seeds to local organisations including Town and Parish Councils, schools and care homes in North Norfolk. The organisations are being invited to sow the poppy seeds as a symbol of remembrance and respect for all those whose lives have been impacted by war. Once sown the number of poppies should increase year on year and will provide an annual glorious display of colour and a visible lasting legacy across North Norfolk. Cllr Nicholas Coppack, Chairman of NNDC, said: “Although this year marks the hundredth anniversary of
the armistices we must never forget the sacrifices, not just from our service personnel but the millions of civilians who died during the last dreadful two World Wars.
“We will continue to remember them. These poignant statues are a permanent reminder of the loss.”
Remember
In Flanders fields of poppies Lay soldiers brave and true Who fought so we had our freedom The likes of me and you. That’s why we war our poppy To keep our memories clear Of those brave men who fought for us Still lay in graves out there. It’s November when we think of them most The time the conflict was won When those that could came back again A hero every one. So be sure to buy your poppy And remember whose we lost And wear it with great pride Not for what it cost. R Craske
Wills & LPAs LPAs Wills UST H –AM MUST HAVE AVE
At Silver and Ward we pride ourselves in giving our clients peace of mind with our expert legal advice explained in plain English. We work extremely hard during our lives to provide for family and loved ones. However, the majority of us fail to ensure that continues if we become unwell, or when we pass away. So, how can you guarantee that? (1) LPAs (Lasting Power of Attorney) – are a safety net for you and your loved ones if you were to be involved in an accident, or have a diagnosis leading to diminished mental capacity. It is incredibly important to have them in place no matter how old you are. As surprising as it sounds, your spouse, or partner, does not have any legal right to make health decisions on your behalf, or deal with your money and property if you are unable to.
(2 ) Wills – can help you to secure a future for those you leave behind. If you do not leave a Will the Law decides who will inherit your estate. This may not be what you want and it is unlikely to provide adequately for your family. A Will prepared by Silver and Ward can provide reassurance and peace of mind for you and your family and help reduce any risks and pitfalls that may arise in the future. We will write it in plain English to avoid any misunderstandings. We offffer fixed fees for Wills and LPAs so you know immediately how much it is going to cost and a FREE INITIAL APPOINTMENT. We can meet with you in your home, Nursing Home, or Hospital at no extra cost.
In the words of Benjamin Franklin “Never leave till tomorrow that which you can do today”.

Northrepps Royal British Legion 2018 Branch Revival
It is with much honour and pride that our Branch, which was formed on 25 October 1949, has made a complete revival with a full complement of Officers and a Standard Bearer. This is due to a great team effort and support from existing members, and indeed new members. We now look forward to a full programme of events for 2019 and moving forward with a 21st century approach - one of our initiatives will be to reach out to the younger generation. On 11 November we will be attending and supporting Northrepps Village Commemoration at their two events both to be held at St. Mary's Church. Northrepps with the Remembrance Service at 10.50am, during which a Memorial Bench will be unveiled and dedicated to the 23 men who left our village never to return and in the evening at 6.50pm The Battle's Over when our Beacon of Light will be lit at 7pm. Northrepps Primary School children will be involved with a torch lit procession from the school to the church, a piper will be playing and afterwards refreshments will be served from the back of the church and people will be able to see the exhibitions inside. It is so good that village organisations have united for this 100 year Commemoration. Anyone wanting more information, please telephone Lorna on 01263 579633.

We Will Remember Them
Members of the Macmillan Cancer Support North Norfolk Group visited St Peter Mancroft Church, Norwich to see the moving display of 15,500 handmade poppies to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One. They were met and shown round by Sarah Salmon who came up with the idea for the display a year ago. She collected all of the poppies and stuck each one onto bunting tape in order to create this moving display.
Poppies poured in from across Norfolk, including about 300 from the Macmillan Group, as well as contributions from abroad, from Brownie and Scout groups, all in a variety of materials. Many contributions came with individual family stories.
Each poppy represents a life lost in the conflict, “somebody said the best thing was, even though they were following a pattern, each of the poppies is unique, just like the soldiers, and I think that’s a really fitting tribute” said Ms Salmon. The display has now been dismantled and will be distributed to form smaller displays around the county.
World War 1 Centenary Remembrance Service at St Margaret’s Church, Thorpe Market on Sunday 11 November at 10.30am Thorpe Market Church has researched the families and military service of the 14 men remembered on the memorials in St. Margaret’s Church.
Robert Turner have not been located.
Descendants of 12 of the 14 men have been contacted. Families of Herbert Cornelius Keeler, who also served in the Boer War and William
All of them were recorded in the rent books for 1914 in the Gunton Archive at Norfolk Records Office. It is therefore likely that they were mostly employees of Lord Suffield.
The research uncovered some quite poignant facts. Frederick, Peter and Walter Cook were three brothers who died in the space of 2 years. Robert Allan died in France in 1917 at the age of 42.
Reginald Allen, his son, died at the end of the war aged 19. He is buried in a war grave in the churchyard. Thomas Pank Mayes died on 11 November 1918 aged 49, the day of the Armistice, and is also buried in the churchyard.

The gates at St Margaret’s have been painted specially for the occasion, recognising the fact that in the early 20th century most people attended church regularly and in the case of these men may also have been choristers, hence passing through them frequently. Sadly, two were later carried through them to be laid to rest in the churchyard.
The exhibition in the church features a silhouette for each man, bearing the brass cap badge of their regiment. There were eleven from ‘The Norfolk Regiment’, one from ‘The Warwickshire Regiment’, one from ‘The Queen’s West Surrey Regiment’ and one from ‘The Coldstream Guards’. There are details of their families and what is known of their war service. There are also photographs of some of the houses we know they left from to go to war.
The service on Remembrance Day will include traditional hymns, readings, lighting of candles and the different regimental music that they would have marched to.
There will also be an excerpt from the Address given at the service that took place nearly 100 years ago to dedicate the village war memorial. Light refreshments will be served after the service.

Pushing the boundaries - neighbour disputes and how to resolve them Amanda Nudds, Solicitor, Hayes + Storr
Neighbour disputes are nothing new and can arise for many reasons. One of the most common neighbour disputes relates to boundaries. Boundary disputes are often complex, and as the parties are frequently emotionally involved, it can be stressful and therefore important to try and reach a resolution as soon as possible, although it is not unusual for parties to be arguing over very small areas of land over long periods of time.
Parties will usually consider their boundary to be marked by a physical feature on the land such as a hedge or fence but these structures are not always consistent with Land Registry plans. It is often only when physical features such as these are removed or called into question that the actual position of the boundary is queried.
The first attempt at resolving any boundary dispute should always be to approach your neighbour first to see if there is a way forward to resolve issues amicably between you. This is not always possible and depends on the extent of the issue, how long it has been going on for and the relationship between the parties. As each dispute is factually different, a solicitor can provide specific advice on the issues you are experiencing and on the best course of action to try and resolve matters.
Initially it is important to establish the boundary
from deeds, documents and evidence, and consider whether they have been amended in any way – perhaps by informal agreement or by one party’s conduct over time. If you have tried to resolve the issue directly with your neighbour but your attempts have been unsuccessful, a solicitor can write to your neighbour to set out your position and try to work towards a satisfactory resolution for all parties.
There are occasions when correspondence between the parties still does not resolve matters. Before embarking on Court proceedings which can be an expensive process and take many months, the parties should consider Alternative Dispute Resolution. This is a term used to describe a range of formal methods for resolving disputes which can include mediation, adjudication and expert determination. If the parties cannot agree to resolve matters this way, or if mediation has been attempted but no agreement reached, then ultimately Court or Property Tribunal proceedings will be the final stage.
Bear in mind that it is necessary to disclose neighbour disputes when it comes to selling your property. If an issue escalates between you and your neighbour that may reasonably effect a buyers decision to purchase your property, your buyer could be in a position to
take legal action against you in the future.

Hospital Ladies ‘dare to bare' for Cancer!
Brave nursing and admin staff from Cromer & District Hospital have decided to 'strip off and stand up to cancer' in order to raise funds for the redevelopment of the old Davison unit which will become a new chemotherapy unit for local people.
Julie Shaw, Waiting List Co-ordinator for the Muriel Thoms Day Procedure Unit, came up with the idea whilst watching ITVs 'Full Monty Ladies Night'.
Having approached the staff on the Unit and received a positive response, she then opened it up to all female staff and the numbers grew. Receiving positive support from the male staff (inc the Chief Exec!) the project was underway.
The Grove Hotel on Overstrand Road, Cromer kindly agreed to the use of their setting for a photo shoot across two weekends with two local photographers, Lucy Stevens of Patricia Jean Photography and Andrea Hudson who also offered to give their time and photos for free. Help with the formatting and printing was covered by Colourprint of Norwich who kindly offered a much reduced rate to allow as much profit as possible to the charity. The Hospitals Facilities Management also offered a generous donation toward the printing costs.
The 'Calendar Girls' is now on sale at the Hospital, Friends pop up shop (open Tues & Thurs 11-4) and The Grove, retailing at £10.
It is hoped to sell 350 copies. For patients with cancer and their healthcare team, the ‘ringing of the bell’ is a significant moment – a point in time that signals the end of active treatment and the beginning of a life free of cancer and the staff would like to try and raise enough money to purchase the bell.
DON’T DON’T ON’T MISS OUT Calendar 2019
We hope you enjoy our Calendar!
This is a special one It possesses beautiful powers Its ring sounds through this entire room As if rung from the highest towers. Its sound is soft and pretty Truly a gentle sound to hear But the real magic goes much deeper As its gift is so very dear. Battling cancer takes enormous strength It’s an exhausting, overwhelming fight We all need to truly believe That at the end of the tunnel there is light. Now imagine a day of chemo Maybe the beginning, middle or end Feeling that you can’t go on Needing support of an unexpected friend. Suddenly you hear the most uplifting sound And you look towards the bell’s place Standing there you see a stranger Or maybe a familiar face. You realize that this person Has completed their final lap And new friends all around the room Give a peaceful, supportive clap.

Cromer based video artist has work exhibited in Taiwan
Gregory Hayman, an artist based in Cromer, is having work exhibited in a prestigious international video art exhibition in a museum in the Taiwan capital of Taipei.
The exhibition called ‘Offline Browser’ is being held at the Hong-Gah Museum in the city. The exhibition opened last month and runs for three months through to the middle of January 2019. Gregory is one of only two artists from the UK who are being shown in the exhibition, the rest of the 31 artists come from around the world. The exhibition committee considered work from 387 international artists from 59 countries before making its final selection, which includes Gregory’s work.
of exploration in the homogeneous spacetime’.
Gregory’s artwork is a video work called Dog. This video artwork is a response to the panic created by the migrant crisis and it looks at the tragic death of the three-year-old Syrian boy Alan Kurdi. It takes as its starting point an artwork, as is usual with Gregory’s work, and explores synergies between the artwork and events.
The theme of the exhibition is described by the museum as being about ‘preserving a space for an individual to turn around in the field of view of space and time dissolved by the internet and in between login and offline, opening up a path
Gregory said “The artwork I chose was Goya’s Dog, or El Perro or Perro Semihundido (the
Wildlife Sculpture Exhibition
Drowning Dog). It is one of Goya’s so-called ‘Black Paintings’. It is an intensely moving painting where the dog is given almost human like expression in the way it looks up tragically pleading for help. I usually spend a huge amount of time researching each artwork, and this one is no exception, including travelling to Madrid to look at the painting in the Prado Museum. But, whereas the research usually results in an artwork, in this case the research is the artwork.”
Gregory’s art practice is mostly video art, but he also makes sculptures and had three sculptures exhibited last year in an exhibition marking the centenary of Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain artwork, that was part of the Hull City of Culture’s programme. Gregory also makes prints and was also short-listed for the prestigious Jerwood Drawing Prize while still a student.
An exhibition of Wildlife Sculpture by Lorraine Izon will be held at Cley Marshes Visitors Centre on Coast Road, Cley from 14 to 17 November.
Lorraine says “I love the wild scenery of North Norfolk and being able to get so close to the abundant wildlife here is always inspiring and a real privilege. I try to reflect my love of the natural world through my sculptural work, not so much by copying it full on, but more by catching a fleeting glimpse and then joining the dots by adding my own interpretations of my experiences. I am interested the fleeting shapes, forms and patterns that imprint on the memory. My exhibition at the Cley Marshes Visitors Centre will be a combination of my sculptural and tile work, plus a selection of paintings, prints and cards”.

Co-op Supports Friends of North Lodge Park
The Co-op high street store in Cromer has been raising money for the Friends of North Lodge Park through sales of second hand books and at till collections.
This money has been used to buy a new park bench which was formally handed over at the end of October by Stuart Vail, manager of the store in Cromer.
Christmas at Reggie’s will be a Wonderland of high quality Christmas trees, old-fashioned moss-backed Holly Wreaths, and an abundance of fresh produce.
Once you have made your selection we will happily help to take your order to your car for the personalised service you deserve. Christmas is made easy at Reggie’s - order forms will be available from December 1st to make sure you get what you need when you want it. Baskets, boxes, and hampers made to order. The complete package, all under one roof. We hope to see you soon - we are sure you will enjoy your shopping experience.
Friends of Cromer Museum
The Friends of Cromer Museum have one more talk before our Christmas break. On Friday 16 November at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer, Chris Branford’s topic will be the flu epidemic of 1918-19 that killed upwards of 50 million people worldwide. This is an aspect of the aftermath of the First World War that is often overshadowed by the controversy surrounding the peace settlement itself. It should be an interesting addendum to events marking the centenary of the end of hostilities. All are welcome – members £3, visitors £4.

Dementia Care
As a Care Agency supporting individuals in the community, many of whom suffer with dementia I felt it was important for my staff to have this virtual experience. I am so glad we did and proud to be one of the first in our region, this was so valid and a timely reminder as to why those who suffer from Dementia react in the way they do in certain circumstances.
The whole training process was delivered professionally and our subsequent debrief covered so much more than anything that could be picked up in a text book because each of us experienced what it is really like first hand. One of our staff was reduced to tears many became frozen in shock and some experienced anger. We are so fortunate our experience was short lived but so many people live with this condition daily. The overriding message was it’s a different state of life but life never the less. When we consider that 1 in 4 of us will be affected by Dementia in some way; by knowing someone who has it or developing it ourselves within the next ten years it’s important to have as much understanding of this subject as possible. Next year when we have moved to our new offices on Garden Additional Drivers neede Street we will repeat this training and invite family members to experience it for themselves. Tee Carver Registered Manager.

Get Crafty for Christmas and Raise Money for MIND
On Saturday 1 December The Rose Garden florists on Mount Street in Cromer will be hosting a special fundraising day and ‘Crafternoon’ for mental health charity, MIND.
Now is the perfect time to come along and stock up on lots of crafty essentials for Christmas. People may not realise that the shop sells cellophane, tissue paper, ribbons and, of course, all the sundries you might need for arranging flowers at home. Come along and be inspired to get crafty. 18
On the day 10% of all sales (including Christmas flower orders) will be donated to MIND. Flowers and plants make a great gift at Christmas and by ordering in advance you can also ensure that 10% goes to a very good cause. There will also be a raffle to win a bespoke floral arrangement for your Christmas table.
In the afternoon there will be Make and Take sessions where you can make your own advent candle posy arrangement to take away. Places are limited for this and must be booked in advance by visiting or telephoning The Rose Garden at 2c Mount Street, Cromer (01263 511116) to speak to one of our team. Make and Take costs £18 (£10 goes to MIND). Cromer Times 553 November 10th 2018

Cllr Wyndham Northam
‘It is with great sadness that North Norfolk District Council announces the death of Cllr Wyndham Northam at the weekend, following a short illness. He was much admired and hugely respected by those he worked with, both officers and politicians. Cllr Northam, who was 89 years old, gave a lifetime to public service. He served a total of 15 years for the

He brought a great deal of expertise to the Council working on his finance portfolio. e was a Norfolk County Councillor for a total of 12 years, finishing in 2017, and a member of Mundesley Parish Council (Chairman in 1997/98). He also had previous local government service as a member of Mountain Ash Urban District Council in Wales from 1959 to
Overstrand Evening WI
There was a very good turnout for our October meeting at which Mr Trevor Eady gave an informative talk on a local attraction, North Norfolk Norfolk Railway. Recently retired from a job in aviation, he sought to be more ‘grounded’, and starting as a volunteer guard in 2006, he rose through the ranks to the position of General Manager. During his stewardship, more trains were timetabled and a variety of special events were instigated, such as a ‘Dad`s Army’ Weekend, and big involvement with the very popular 1940`s Weekend introduced throughout the town of Sheringham. Throughout December Santa specials are run, a Halloween special for the first time this year, Thomas the Tank Engine, another one for the children, and special rallies for the enthusiasts such as

1972 (Chairman in 1965). He served in the Royal Navy from 1945 to 1954, specialising in radar and communications, and worked as a station master and traffic controller for British Rail from 1954 to 1963. From then until 1992, he was a member of a major finance house, specialising in administration and credit control. Cllr Northam is survived by his wife Sylvia and their son James.’
a Steam Rally and a rally for the diesel loco enthusiasts too. Attracting over 166 thousand visitors annually, the 55 dedicated staff and 380 volunteers keep the wheels turning. We heard about the vital engineering aspects and learned that Weybourne station is the only place on the line with 2 tracks, so careful timetabling is essential. The growing popularity of the North Norfolk Railway greatly benefits the town, so the locals tolerate occasional bouts of disruption when a “new” loco arrives.
Plans are well underway for this year’s Christmas Lunch being held at the Northrepps Cottage Country Hotel. Next month is the Annual Meeting where we treat ourselves to a light buffet. Members were pleased to hear of the success of our quiz team who shared 2nd place at the Brass Tray Quiz, this year hosted by Sheringham WI. New faces are warmly welcomed to our meetings which are held on the third Wednesday of each month in the Parish Hall.

CROMER FLOWER CLUB
Our October demonstrator was Barbara Collins on Floral Moments, which was based on a colourful autumn theme and she needed a bit of colour as she had just had a look at the sea. Her first display was based around a piece of Scots Pine which had grown into a square and was an ideal backdrop for ivy, small leaved rubus and fatsia leaves glycerined to a deep brown, red tipped petunia with burgundy chrysanthemums and love lies bleeding and was finished with gold chrysanthemums and green hypericum.
The second design was on a plywood box with a frame set askew and made of green bamboo with orchid tubes attached, various greenery was added to the back and front. The flowers were gold alstroemeria and orange carthamus and the tubes were filled with conifer, orange gerberas and Chinese lanterns. Next she brought out a bark pot and filled it with a mix of tradition and exotic foliage, cyprus palms, begonia leaves, red dogwood and skimmia, red gladioli, red alstroemeri, a gold chrysanthemums and 3 green athuriums for a lovely display.
The next design was a very much admired modern arrangement in a shallow dish, the base was covered with a small hebe, conifer and variegated ivy. In the centre were uprights of stripped dried pussy willow, dark red gladioli were added along with long stemmed rosemary orange carthamus and, new to some of us, kiwi mellow carnations. Finally yellow roses tipped with red were added at different heights.
The next arrangement was in a cornucopia complimented with three gourds greenery was pouring out, yew, green box rosemary, magnolia leaves and rubus, dried wheat, bicoloured carnations, yellow roses and green hypercum to finish the display.
Lastly she made a design in a split bamboo basket with aspidistra leaves, Cyprus palms, varigated pittosprum and lovely buttermilk covered alstroemeria, Chinese lanterns, orange Olivia gerberas with lime green chrysanthemums for a beautiful autumn show.
Volunteering Open Morning in Cromer
North Norfolk Volunteer Hub at Merchants’ Place will be holding a Volunteering Open Morning on Saturday 17 November between 10am and 1pm. Join us for refreshments and chat to local groups who will be available to answer any questions about the volunteer roles on offer.
The vote of thanks was given by Janice Pope who had a busy evening as she was best in show in our very well supported competition Halloween. She decorated a large pumpkin with gerberas lilies and chrysanthemums and a nice touch was a little flower in the lid.
On 19 November at 7.20pm in the Primary School we welcome Susan Horne with her interpretation of ‘Floral Mayhem’. Come along and enjoy! And don’t forget your Christmas chocolates wrapped for Halsey House.
