Friends of Cromer Museum

This year it is 250 years since the circus became accepted as an entertainment and art form in its own right so it was fitting that the first of this winter’s talks given by Gareth Davies and organised by the Friends of Cromer Museum dealt with the life of Pablo Fanque, one of the early pioneers of the circus.

His life and times as a circus performer and proprietor shed light not only on Pablo Fanque’s remarkable life but also on the social attitudes of Victorian England.

Fanque’s real name was William Darby and he was born in 1810 in

St. Andrews’ Workhouse in Norwich. He was of mixed race and although Norwich was regarded as a relatively liberal city for the time non-whites still had a hard time. It was when he was apprenticed to William Batty, a well-known circus owner, that Fanque developed the skills in tumbling, acrobatics and, particularly, equestrianism that were to play a key part in his life as performer and circus owner. Norwich had its own circus building called the Parthenon or Rotunda which Pablo Fanque was on the site of what became the Victoria Station in later years. By 1840 equestrianism was the mainstay of the circus and in late 1841 Fanque left William Batty’s circus and set up his own show. He had financial support from William Bullard the brewer and the first performance of Fanque’s own circus was given in February 1842.

Fanque’s career lasted until his death in May 1871 and had a number of ups and downs. His circus was very popular in the north of England but his life was not without tragedy. Continued on page 4...

Continued from front cover... In August 1848 his wife was killed when a stand holding 600 spectators collapsed onto the box office where she was working. Circuses were often criticised for encouraging rowdy behaviour and the use of child performers was caught up in the mid-Victorian campaigns The type of equestrian skill for which Pablo was famous to protect children at work to the extent that in 1878 the Children’s Dangerous Performers Act allowed fines to be levied if children were put at risk. Competition from well-resourced American circuses, especially with their use of exotic animals, put pressure on Fanque and other owners of small circuses and when he died in Stockport in May 1871 he was insolvent and living in poverty. Pablo Fanque’s contribution to multiculturalism lives on - from the name check he gets in the Beatles’ song ‘For the Benefit of Mr Kite’ to attempts today to present him as an early example of black entrepreneurship.

Thanks

My most grateful thanks to all those Good Samaritans who came to my aid as I tripped and fell on Norwich Road, Cromer, on my way home from church on Sunday 4 November at 10.45am.

For finding me a chair and organising the paramedics, one of whom shares my birthday! Who drove me home and stayed with me until they were satisfied I hadn’t received any serious injuries.

I am deeply indebted to you all. George

WELL DONE DAVID

Members of North Norfolk Speakers’ Club were delighted to congratulate David McNaughter when he won the October contest for Two Minute Topics.

He is seen in our photo accepting his trophy from the contest chairman, Lynne Goddard.

At every fortnightly meeting members have the opportunity to speak ‘off the cuff’ for two minutes on a topic given to them. It surprises new members how quickly they improve their public speaking and leadership skills when participating in this and other similar exercises in the friendly and enjoyably environment of the Speakers’ Club.

North Norfolk Speakers’ Club meet at 7pm on alternate Wednesdays in the Library, North Walsham High School, NR28 9HZ. See the website www.nnsc.co.uk

Mountain Warehouse Charity Bags sales hit 30,000 benefitting 220 local charities

Mountain Warehouse has sold over 30,000 canvas bags through stores in United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland since the start of their Charity Bags campaign which launched on 3 July this year. The company will donate 100% of the profits from each of the £1.99 bags to 220 local charities. Mountain Warehouse stores each nominated a local charity to support during the campaign and shoppers had five eye-catching prints to choose from. The Cromer Mountain Warehouse store has chosen to support the RNLI for their Charity Bag Campaign. Mountain Warehouse founder Mark Neale says “At Mountain Warehouse we are passionate about supporting the local communities our stores are a part of. Each of our stores receives fantastic support from their local customers, and we are thrilled to be launching a collection which will be giving something back to so many good causes.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

ÂŁ1814.04 raised at our Christmas Sale on 10 november.

Many thanks to our volunteers for manning the stalls on the day and to all our cat loving friends for coming and supporting us

Kittens, Mango and Misha have recently gone to their new home and someone is very interested in giving Flossy a new home, although not immediately. Grace, the little stray mentioned last time, is now looking so much better. She is no longer receiving four portions of fish plus the special biscuits for tummy upsets per day, as the fish has now been replaced by fresh chicken. Stephanie will gradually introduce other cat food into her diet but it is important at this stage to do this gradually. She is a little sweetheart and just loves lots of fuss and cuddles. Once she is fully fit, she will be put up for adoption.

Stephanie has recently received several calls relating to stray cats. However, until we can be sure the cat is indeed a stray and not someone’s much loved pet, we cannot put them on the waiting list to come into care. Cats do tend to visit houses close to their homes, especially if their owners are out during the day. They will beg for food even if they have recently been fed so, unless they are in very poor condition, it is best not to feed them. If possible, take them to the vets to see if they have been microchipped and, if not, we or the vets can supply you with paper collars to try and identify whether or not they have a home. Even those that look in poor condition may have a home

Hedgehog Haven

Normally you don't interfere with a nest with hoglets but when I had a telephone call three weeks ago about a nest, I made the decision to collect and bring them into care.

Because it is so late in the year, the hoglets would not weigh enough to survive outside. What a good mum! There are five hoglets who now weigh approximately 200 gms each, so I have now separated them from mum and she is having a well-earned rest in an outside hut and the hoglets are housed inside, three in one hut and two in another.

and could be receiving treatment or be on a special diet. This is often the case with older cats, who could have diabetes or thyroid problems and are often quite thin with dull coats. Again, if possible, get the cat to the vets to be checked for a microchip. Once it has been established that the cat is a stray we can put it on our waiting list for when a pen becomes free.

I recently received a phone call from one of our volunteers who had been informed that a cat had been hit by a car and, although still alive, it was not looking good. Although a Sunday night I advised them to ring Westover and they were able to take the cat to the surgery where the vet was Romeo, a nice friendly waiting to see what could be done. Sadly, cat, no longer looking for the poor cat died but the vets were able romance, just a lovely new to keep it in case an owner turned up. This home is the second emergency recently when we have had to contact Westover out of hours, the last time being a Saturday afternoon and, again, the vet was there ready to do what was necessary. It is good to know that there is someone there whenever they are needed.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

FAQs and Top Tips for First Time Buyers

Gaynor Smith . Property Solicitor . Clapham & Collinge Solicitors

Conveyancing transactions can be particularly complicated and confusing, especially for first time buyers. However, we believe that buying a home for the first time should be more exciting than stressful. This is why our team offer the very best straightforward, friendly service and will guide you through the entire process to make sure your transaction goes through as smoothly and as quickly as possible. We hope that these frequently asked questions, that first time buyers are so often seeking the answers to, will provide you with the basics to put you at ease throughout the transaction.

Q. What are the steps of the conveyancing process for buying a property?

A Conveyancer should be instructed on acceptance of the Buyer’s offer. The Buyer arranges a survey on the property, and makes an application for a mortgage (if required). The Buyer’s Conveyancer confirms instructions by letter, setting out the terms of business and fixed fee costs. They will contact the seller’s Conveyancer to obtain the contract pack. Once received, they will raise pre-contract enquiries, carry out the necessary searches and obtain a copy of the mortgage offer. The Sellers’s Conveyancer and seller answer pre-contract enquiries and return these to buyer’s Conveyancer, who will then review and reports to the buyer on the contents of the contract pack, pre-contract enquiries, the result of the searches and mortgage offer. The buyer then considers this report and raises questions on anything they feel is unclear. When the buyer is happy to proceed, arrangements are made for contracts to be formally “exchanged”, legally committing both parties to the transaction. Upon

exchange a completion date is agreed and this is the date that the balance of purchase monies will be sent to the seller’s solicitor and the buyer gets the keys.

Q. How does a Solicitor or Conveyancer make the buying process easier for clients? Picking the right legal advisor for you can make a huge difference, after all you are going to be dealing with each other a lot over the coming weeks. The right Solicitor or Conveyancer will guide you through the process step-by-step and advise you as to any potential issues that may arise as well as how these can be resolved.

Q. What can first time buyers do to make the conveyancing process run more smoothly?

There are a few things that buyers can do to help the process along:-

1. Prepare your finances If you need a mortgage to purchase your first home, we would recommend obtaining a mortgage in principle before putting in any offers. This way you will know how much you are eligible to borrow. You should look closely at the quotation provided by your legal advisor so you know exactly how much you need in total to purchase the property, including Stamp Duty Land Tax and Land Registration Fees. There are bound to be times during the process when you’ll feel like there are constant demands for your cash. Be prepared that there will be lots of fees to pay for and you’ll need to have money available. 2.Fill in forms and other requests for information promptly and accurately The quicker you can respond to requests for information, the quicker your legal advisor will be able to move on to the next stage of the process. There are numerous formalities your legal advisor will have to follow, they will only ask you for information that is absolutely necessary.

SPECIAL OFFER 15% OFF

A L L S TOC K C A R P E T S (not in conjunction with any other offers)

We also supply and fit hard flooring - including Karndean, Amtico, Project Floors, RhinoFloors and safety flooring

3.Stay on top of the process There are a lot of elements that need to come together in the house-buying process and it can be easy to lose track of where you're up to. Keeping good communication going with your legal advisor and estate agents will help you stay on top of what can be a long and confusing process. If you have concerns do not stay silent, it is important to raise these with your legal advisor at the earliest opportunity.

Q. What additional tips would you give to first time buyers about to step onto the property ladder? The biggest tip that we can give a first time buyer is to instruct a legal advisor they trust. As a first time buyer it is all new and potentially daunting, but the right Conveyancer will take the time to guide them through each step of the process. Your Conveyancer is also crucial when it comes to speeding up the process, flagging up potential problems and dealing with them quickly too. If you are looking to buy or sell your home, the Clapham & Collinge Client Relations team are on hand to provide you with a no obligation quote. Call today on 01692 660230 for our North Walsham office or 01263 823398 for our Sheringham office.

Northrepps Village Remembrance and Commemoration

On Friday 9 November residents and members of Northrepps Royal British Legion joined with pupils, staff and parents at Primary School for their Tribute and Act of Remembrance.

The Branch Standard was present, and Mr. Ted Briggs played The Last Post and Reveille. We were all able to speak with the children and to see their work that they had produced which would be on display over the weekend in the church. It was a very moving experience to be able to share this and our thanks to them for inviting us into their school.

Our two village events both held on Sunday 11 November were at St. Mary's Church and were both linked by two members of the very well-known Youngman farming family. It was with much honour and pride that our new Memorial Bench in memory of the 23 young men who left this village never to return, was unveiled by serving Royal Marine Commando Alexander Youngman, and then dedicated.

Cromer Times 554 November 24th 2018

Needham from Cromer and we were also joined by George Gallagher, a D Day veteran.

Pupils of the Primary School took part in the service, and afterwards, there were exhibitions to see. A life size model soldier and a 1917 Vickers machine gun were exhibited by that very well-known military collector Mr John

At 6.30pm piper Jake Millman started to play and the school children, staff and parents formed a torch light procession from the school to the War Memorial. The Battle's Over commenced at 6.50pm. The Last Post was played by Ted Briggs aged 92 years, and our Beacon was lit. It was an honour for our village to join with all the beacons right across our nation and beyond, and a signed certificate of our involvement signed by Bruno Peek is framed and on display in Northrepps church. Refreshments

were then served from the back of the church, and there was great interest in the exhibitions.

A huge thank you to village organisations, the school and everyone who worked and helped this historic commemorative event to take place and in conclusion our community was very much united.

Another Fireworks Success at The Lighthouse

Despite a very wet day on the Thursday, the weather was perfect for Friday evening’s fireworks at The Lighthouse Inn in Walcott.

Always a spectacular display, this year was no exception.

This year’s theme was the centenary of the end of World War 1 and included a roll of honour of all those lost from Walcott in both wars.

North East Norfolk Bird Club

NENBC meeting with Mike Dawson and friends 'Champions of the Flyway' on 29 November 7.30pm – 9.30pm at Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX. Mike says 'having watched other people having fun racing around the deserts of Southern Israel for the last four years, a group of us thought we ought to have a go at raising some money for conservation and get a few lifers into the bargain. This is the story of what it's about, what we saw and what we hope to do in 2019'. Come and enjoy a 'winners' tale.

Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. Please ensure that local residents can still access their driveways and there is sufficient clearance for agricultural vehicles to use the road. A torch might also be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. Contact Lin Pateman: info@nenbc.co.uk website: www.nenbc.co.uk/events

Felbrigg Park: mid-week walk 9 December 9am-11am this walk caters for all levels of ability. We will take a leisurely walk around the Park & Lake, route dependent on the local bird and other wildlife likely to be present on the day. Please wear clothing appropriate to the weather - footpaths in Felbrigg can be muddy at any time of the year. Meet at Sexton's Lodge car park, off Lion's Mouth, NR11 8PS at the western end of the estate. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. As usual, children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs.

Could you bring the magic of reading to a child in your community?

Beanstalk is a national literacy charity that transforms children’s life chances by recruiting and supporting volunteers and placing them in local primary schools. These volunteers work with children who have either fallen behind with their reading, lack confidence, or struggle with their fluency, comprehension or vocabulary.

The charity is searching for members of the community along the North Norfolk coast who can spare a few hours a week helping children to become more confident readers. As a Beanstalk reading helper you will work with three children at a local primary school and spend 30 minutes with each child twice a week, during term-time, for at least one academic year.

If you would like to become a Beanstalk reading helper in Norfolk, please visit the website at www.beanstalkcharity.org.uk or call Beanstalk on 0845 4500301.

Cromer Poor Lands Trust

Cromer Poor Lands Trust has set up a scheme to help Cromer residents who need help to purchase a new electrical item, school uniform, bicycle, tank of heating oil etc.

The provisions of the 1811 Enclosure Act included an allocation of land to be used to generate income. The income was to be used to provide fuel for the poor of the 'Ancient Parish'. Trustees established by the Act were authorised to let the land, and the profits from the rents were, from time to time, spent on fuel as 'coal tickets' for distribution amongst the poor inhabitants of the parish of Cromer.

Under charity law, the Trustees of the Charity are obliged to seek the best income possible from their investments, and so should always be looking for opportunities to improve the charity's income. Therefore recently this land has now been sold, and the proceeds invested to provide an income greater than the rents being received.

Originally the Trust was restricted to help only widows living in Cromer. The Trusts have now been changed so it can help anyone living in

to ÂŁ500 to cover the purchase price, with a repayment term to suit the applicant. Once half the loan has been paid off Cromer Poor Lands Trust will step in and pay the remaining balance.

Cromer who is in need, hardship or distress. The Trustees define 'need' as being in receipt of state welfare benefits, confirmed by receipt of a covering letter from a Social Worker, District Nurse or other professional person.

There is no typical applicant who may apply for help, but many could live on state benefits, and may have just been housed by the Council in empty accommodation, with no furniture, carpets or electrical goods. Applications may come from single parent families who have no support from the other parent and find themselves with an urgent need to replace a cooker or a washing machine, or need to buy uniform when a child goes to a new school.

With increasing use of electricity and gas instead of solid fuel, this has led the Trustees to set up a scheme to provide grants for a wider range of white goods in conjunction with a local credit union.

If an applicant was to apply for help to purchase a new fridge, freezer, washing machine or cooker, the local credit union will offer the applicant a low-cost loan of up

JAZZ AT THE BELFRY CENTRE OVERSTRAND

Dave Amis, former Director and Founder of the |Norwich Student |Jazz Orchestra, brought to the Belfry his highly accomplished jazz ensemble ‘Cyan Traces’ to celebrate becoming an octogenarian.

The invited guests enjoyed a ‘touch of class’, surely satisfying their love of jazz. Dave's arrangements of many numbers from the two sets were unique in structure to many in the audience, especially when the usual time signatures were changed, creating exciting rhythms and dynamics.

The band consisted of Dave Amis (trombone/arrangements), Holly Graham (vocals), Tom Harris (Piano), George Crowley (tenor sax), Ivars Galenieks (double bass) and Martina Gebhardt (vocals and guesting). All gave a master class in improvisational skills – Holly Graham's vocal quality being a joy to behold and Martina Gebhardt's singing being an art in itself, allowing her vocal chords to become an instrument, giving the listener's imagination to decide which one!

Great credit must go to Steve Fordington who played the sublime grand piano between the two sets, here, all present, could enjoy his playing of well-loved music to suit all tastes.

Phil Harris Chair of Cromer Poor Land Trust said “It is good to work with a Credit Union to help residents in Cromer who are struggling financially to replace domestic appliances with more energy efficient models or require other financial help in difficult times.

Application forms will shortly be available at Cromer Town Council offices, the Methodist Church drop in on Monday and Thursdays and other places in Cromer. For al spo your l r in Nts gea Nor orth r folk

Once again Cromer residents and businesses are preparing for a busy Christmas season. Shops are already full of festive fare and soon the streets will be decorated with wonderful Christmas lights and decorations.

Cromer Church family are also busy preparing to welcome hundreds of locals and visitors over the Christmas period. Last year over 1,500 locals and visitors passed through our doors and we are looking forward to seeing many of you at our varied programme of events again this year.

1 Cornish Way Business Park North Walsham Norfolk NR28 0FE

Beginning on Wednesday 28 November, and running until Saturday 1 December, the Parish Church will be full of lights, trees, wreaths and nativity scenes for Cromer Town’s Christmas Tree Festival. On the last day of the festival the Christmas lights will be switched on. There will be carol singing in the churchyard at 5pm before the big switch on at 5.15pm.

We will be holding a contemporary Christmas celebratory evening at 7pm on Friday 14 December, at St Martin’s Hall, Mill Road, Cromer. ‘Unwrapped’ will bring you a selection of Date GMT Height Tide Date GMT Height Tide sketches, sung performances 24-Nov 01:14 0.92 m L 01-Dec 00:30 4.40 m H and songs to sing along to. 06:38 5.12 m H 07:41 1.29 m L

Our annual Traditional Carol Service in the Parish Church will be on Sunday 16 December. Join us at 6.30pm and stay to enjoy mince pies afterwards.

On Christmas Eve the Parish Church will be full of families enjoying our two Christingle services at 2.30pm and 4.30pm. Because of the popularity of our Christingle services, and to ensure a safe and enjoyable time for everyone, each service will be subject to a maximum capacity of 450 people. Health and Safety regulations prevent us from exceeding this limit and, regrettably, once 450 has been reached people will be turned away. In fairness to all, it will not be possible to reserve seating. Doors open half an hour before.

Finally, we will be celebrating the birth of Jesus at our Christmas Eve Communion in the Parish Church at 11pm, and again on Christmas Day with Communion at 9am and an All-Age Christmas Day Celebration at 10.45am.

Cromer Church family wish you a Happy Christmas and very Happy New Year. www.cromer-church.org.uk Cromer Times 554 November 24th 2018

National Trust launches fundraising appeal to secure the future of first Complete Bible to be printed in English – Blickling’s nationally important library as well as first editions of Jane Austen's Sense An ambitious new conservation project to secure the long-term future of one of the most significant book collections in the country has been launched by the National Trust, and with it a fundraising appeal to support the work that’s needed.

The £325,000 building project will see vital work get underway at Norfolk’s Blickling Estate, as part of a larger five year project to not only save the library, but bring it to life for visitors. The hall is home to one of the most significant country house libraries in England, with more than 12,500 volumes making up the largest and oldest book collection in the conservation charity’s care.

As part of ongoing conservation work a number of risks to the books have been identified, including from mould and death watch beetle. The conservation project will see work take place that will ensure the library is fit for the future.

Paul Coleman, the National Trust’s Project Manager, said “Historic buildings like Blickling bring multiple challenges with

them over time and need continual care for the precious collections they hold, and the work we need to do in the library is about the long-term future of the books here.”

“It’s not unusual for issues such as leaks or pest damage to appear in places like this, but without this essential work to stop them in their tracks, the potential damage to the collection would be irreversible. We know that a visit to the library is the highlight for many visitors to Blickling, so we’re confident that together we can take it into the next stage of its long history.”

The short mat sessions are well under way now with the league table showing 24 participants. The fun and laughter continue unabated in sometimes quite chaotic games. Red and yellow never caused so much disarray! Bob A leads the way, as usual, with 22 points closely followed by Roger

September Winner - Adrian James

“One of the great highlights of my job here is working so closely with this very special collection and this project is all about taking an historic collection into the future so that we can share it with people for generations to come.”
