COUNTY’S BIGGEST NEW YEAR’S DAY FIREWORK DISPLAY CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

All eyes will be on the skies above Cromer Pier on 1 January 2019 as the traditional New Year’s Day Firework display celebrates its 20th anniversary.

The event, which started as a one-off display for the new millennium in 2000, was funded by Cromer Town Council and was located on The Meadow - it was a success in terms of local support, and it raised a few hundred pounds for charity.

Continued from front cover... Outgoing Firework Committee Chairman Jim Bond said “This seemed to be an event that we could do every year, and the following year it attracted a larger crowd. After a few years, the display was moved onto the pier, thanks to North Norfolk District Council's support. “It has gone on to attract larger and larger crowds, and consequently an increase in donations which helps pay for the following year's display and grants to local charities."

Since 2000 the event has given out grants totalling £55,815 to local charities and good causes.

To mark the 20th display, organisers hope as many people as possible will again come to Cromer for the day to see more than 3000 firework shots light up the skies over the North Sea.

New Firework Committee Chairman Pat West said “As always, the advice is please arrive early and support the local businesses in town who do support the Fireworks committee.”

“To mark the centenary of the end of the First World War we will have a red glittering firework leaf sequence which lasts about one minute before the main display. There are also several exciting new sequences within the main display which will be new to Cromer this year and we are very excited to show these to everyone.” I’m also excited to announce the reintroduction of the torchlight parade from Cromer church before the display. We have a new route and for those who have purchased official merchandise there is a designated area with a grandstand view of the firework display. I am very honoured that the trust of the fireworks committee has been entrusted to me, I can only hope I will be as long-standing as Jim Bond who has done an absolutely marvellous job.”

The annual display attracts more than 10,000 people into Cromer on New Year’s Day with many spending the day in the town for a breath of fresh air and something to eat and drink before the display is fired from Cromer Pier at 5pm.

The event is free, however there will be bucket collectors out in force on the day to fundraise for the 2020 display.

The bucket collection at the 2018 display raised a fantastic £10,021. Half of this was given out in grants to local good causes and the balance has been used towards funding the 2019 display.

“Just a few coins can make a lot of difference to local charities and good causes – and without everyone’s help we couldn’t continue the annual display,” said Jim Bond.

Organisers are still looking for volunteers to bolster their official bucket collectors’ team. Please contact Cromer Town Council for more information or register at Cromer museum on New Year’s Day from 2pm.

Market Towns Inititative - Nine Projects to Improve four North improvements to signage. Norfolk Market Towns Approved • Stalham Area Business Forum -

NNDC will hand out nearly £267,000 to Community Projects in Holt, North Walsham, Fakenham and Stalham

Funding for a wide range of projects designed to improve the economic vitality of North Norfolk’s four inland market towns has been approved.

A meeting of North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet agreed to a set of recommendations today which had been put forward by the Market Towns Initiative working group. Each town was able to bid for £100,000 to spend on projects enabling them to take part in the development of their economic future. The money comes from a total pot of £400,000. Around £130,000 remains in the Market Towns Initiative fund and a second round of applications will be opened to access this money, with the closing date for these applications being 12 February.

The amount any one town can receive in total will remain at a maximum of £100,000 – so if a town received £50,000 in the first round, it would be able to bid for up to £50,000 in the second round.

The nine successful applicants are: • Fakenham Town Council - £24,341.67 for

a regenerative project that would provide a facelift for rundown shop fronts and signage in the town centre. Fakenham Town Council - £2,525 to design and print a heritage guide with a map and information about the town to be used by residents and visitors. Active Fakenham - £33,550 to coordinate, resource and market a large number of events in the town centre. The Holt Society - £7,210 to design and print a pamphlet and five notice boards to provide information on the Holt Owl Trail to residents and visitors. Love Holt - £26,000 to implement a major marketing campaign for the town designed to increase visitors and trade. Holt Town Council - £17,514 for projects including an accessible ‘Yellow Brick Route’, and a Holt Park and Ride scheme. Regenerate North Walsham and North Walsham Town Council - £99,575 to implement three major improvement projects split between improving St Nicholas Court, the town centre and attracting more visitors to the town. Stalham Town Council - £32,204.70 to improve the tourism offer of the town with an aim to attract more visitors by making improvements to the Staithe and its connection to the town centre via

Conveyancing transactions can be particularly complicated and confusing, especially for first time buyers. However, we believe that buying a home for the first time should be more exciting than stressful. What are the steps of the conveyancing process for buying a property?

A Conveyancer should be instructed on acceptance of the Buyer’s offer. The Buyer arranges a survey on the property, and makes an application for a mortgage (if required). The Buyer’s Conveyancer confirms instructions by letter, setting out the terms of business and fixed fee costs. They will contact the seller’s Conveyancer to obtain the contract pack. Once received, they will raise pre-contract enquiries, carry out the necessary searches and obtain a copy of the mortgage offer. The Sellers’s Conveyancer and seller answer pre-contract enquiries and return these to buyer’s Conveyancer, who will then review and reports to the buyer on the contents of the contract pack, pre-contract enquiries, the result of the searches and mortgage offer. The buyer then considers this report and raises

questions on anything they feel is unclear. When the buyer is happy to proceed, arrangements are made for contracts to be formally “exchanged”, legally committing both parties to the transaction. Upon exchange a completion date is agreed and this is the date that the balance of purchase monies will be sent to the seller’s solicitor and the buyer gets the keys.

Q. How does a Solicitor or Conveyancer make the buying process easier for clients? Picking the right legal advisor for you can make a huge difference, after all you are going to be dealing with each other a lot over the coming weeks. The right Solicitor or Conveyancer will guide you through the process step-by-step and advise you as to any potential issues that may arise as well as how these can be resolved. Q. What can first time buyers do to make the conveyancing process run more smoothly?

Fill in forms and other requests for information promptly and accurately The quicker you can respond to requests for information, the quicker your legal advisor will be able to move on to the next stage of the process. There are numerous formalities your legal advisor will have to follow, they will only ask you for information that is absolutely necessary.

3. Stay on top of the process There are a lot of elements that need to come together in the house-buying process and it can be easy to lose track of where you're up to. Keeping good communication going with your legal advisor and estate agents will help you stay on top of what can be a long and confusing process. Robin Hood, Snow White and Noah – oh yes it is! North Norfolk school’s ‘do different’ panto

Robin Hood and his Merry Man, Snow White and the Three Dwarves… Aldborough Primary School’s panto was decimated by budget cuts this year. However, the show must go on! In this case, the school pooled what’s left of the funds and came up with an exciting Christmas Mish Mash – including a version of Noah’s Flood.

Even better, it was all for a good cause. This year the popular panto raised money for Hospice Ethiopia UK, the Norfolk-based charity whose work helps thousands of desperate people in Africa.

“It was really a very different sort of panto,” says co-director and Class 5 teacher Jill Morgan. “The mash-up saw lots of different classic pantomime characters desperately trying to get a plot together – before things get swept up in a sort of souped up Noah’s Flood… I’m pleased to say the children took to it like ducks to water… which perhaps is just as well!”

We children clap our hands with glee as Dad brings in the Christmas tree. My goodness it is very tall, Dad says it must go in the hall. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We are delighted to report that Chewy has now been chosen and is already a much-loved member of his new household. Three more kittens have also left for their new homes and, although we will have stopped homing over the Christmas period by the time you read this, we do have several people interested in giving some of those still in care a new home.

At present we are helping with the cost of neutering feral cats at four locations and we always advise the people who are trapping the cats that it is important to ensure that all the cats are done. This is not always easy, but essential, if the colony is to be contained and the cats are to remain healthy. We have had instances where, because there has been interbreeding within the colony, young cats will have had health issues. A recent instance is one of the kittens taken to be neutered was found to have both male and female organs and needed a more complex operation, plus additional aftercare at the vets. It is now a priority to get the mother cat neutered. It is always challenging but worthwhile in the end.

Last time we mentioned some of the fundraising undertaken by our volunteers. Not to be forgotten is the work undertaken by other volunteers and supporters to raise money to ensure the branch can continue to care for cats in our area. Firstly, Bren and Jenny, for all the lovely items they make to sell, not only at our fund raising events, but also private commissions, Marian, who fosters for us at Briston for sales of plants at her home and Car Boot Sales, Barbara, who has organised store collections, Andrea and Barbara for raising money at the Cromer Carnival Charity event, Rebels Charity Bingo at Potter Heigham for proceeds from their event, Beverley for the lovely Dolls House room and for the sale of model caravans, plus Collection Boxes at Showcase Gallery in North Walsham and at Aylsham Cattery (which included the sale of special knitted mice). We thank you all for all that you do and also all of you who help throughout the year, either caring for the cats or helping with fund raising. Jackie Williams, was until last year, one of our fosterers. They both made a valuable contribution to the work that we do and the cats have lost two very good friends.

Our Neutering Line has also been very busy and again, at the time of writing, we have issued 224 vouchers (71 of these in the last two months) for cats to be neutered. We have also helped with neutering several feral cats too. So many cats and kittens need our help because a cat has not been neutered so we are delighted and hope people will continue to call for this help.

Hedgehog Haven

Pictured is little Rosie, she came in at only 150 gms and with one of her rear legs very swollen. She is on a 10 day course of antibiotics and we lanced it to relieve the pressure. Just over a week on, the swelling has just about gone and she is eating well and gaining weight.

It is so rewarding when you get a good result especially knowing that she will be able to return to the wild in spring. On Saturday 8 December I had three new arrivals from different locations an underweight juvenile, an adult female with an eye infection and Betty with an injured rear leg.

With so many in care it's certainly going to be a busy winter.

Charity Garden Party for Cancer Research

A pop picnic was held in the garden of Rob Charles and his fiancee Marian Rayman who live in Thurgarton to raise money for Cancer Research.

Guests brought their own food and drink to the late summer event and sat in the glorious sunshine and enjoyed the talents of many musicians and singers who performed on two stages.

A buffet was also prepared for a small fee for 6pm so there was no shortage of food. The party ran from midday until well after midnight. A small entry fee was charged and with the help of a large raffle and an auctioned painting, an Marian presenting the cheque for £800 for Cancer Research to her Oncologist Dr Gaurav amount of £800 was raised. This money will go to Rob and Marian thanked all the local needs in the fight against cancer performers and everyone else who had helped adding “in all we had at least 16 different artistes performing during the day which finished with a firework display and it went really well. Plans are now under way for next year’s pop picnic”

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB

On 4 December we had an excellent Christmas lunch at the Links Hotel, followed by a talk by Mr Christopher Brooks, entitled ‘East Coast Evacuees’. He mentioned that 1990 had seen the 50th anniversary of one of the main evacuations of children from the Norfolk and Suffolk coasts due to fears of possible invasion. In fact, there were several evacuations known by this region – including one of children coming to this country. He explained how, before the war, in 1938-9 many Jewish children from Germany had been brought through the Kindertransport, to Dovercourt holiday camp near Harwich, from where many were taken up to Lowestoft.

Christopher also told how there were three waves of evacuation from within Britain. The first phase occurred in the lead-up to the war. Then, because it seemed to be a ‘phony war’, the evacuees started returning home. The second wave occurred when the bombing started. In the third wave in 1944, when the ‘doodlebugs’ started falling on London, a scheme was started for children to go (if registered) to the US, Australia or Canada. This scheme was stopped when two of the ships involved were torpedoed – with all surviving the sinking of the Volendam, but sadly with few survivors from the Benares.

With all evacuations, there was always the question ‘to go, or not to go?’ with stress and tears for both children and parents if the decision was taken to evacuate. Also, children’s experiences in their new billets were quite varied – some very happy, others not so, depending on the attitude of the hosts. Christopher read several poignant accounts from people who had been evacuees and also asked members present about their own experiences. Christopher was thanked for his very interesting talk by Jack Broughton, who chaired the meeting.

Decision to grant planning permission for innovative coastal scheme

Sandscaping scheme will help protect Bacton Gas Terminal and neighbouring villages

A multi-million pound coast protection scheme passed an important hurdle yesterday after members of North Norfolk District Council’s Development Committee agreed to grant it planning permission.

The Sandscaping scheme will see up to 1.8 million cubic metres of sand placed on to the beaches covering a 5.7km length starting north west of Bacton Gas Terminal and ending to the south eastern extent of Walcott.

This would be made up of: • Approximately 1 million cubic metres in front of Bacton Gas Terminal • Between 0.5 and 0.8 million cubic metres in front of the villages of Bacton and Walcott.

Estimated scheme costs are between £17 million and £22 million. The scheme is a joint venture between North Norfolk District Council, the Bacton Terminal Operators, the Environment Agency and a range of other contributors.

The project would create significantly bigger beaches, improved beach access and better protection from the sea for the gas terminal and the villages of Bacton and Walcott. Over time there could be benefits to other villages along the coastline.

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said: “This is an essential piece of work to protect both our Norfolk villages and nationally important infrastructure.

leading the way in innovative technology solutions, tackling climate change on our doorstep.”

There are a range of other steps which need to be completed before the scheme can proceed, including the appointment of a construction contractor, finalisation of funding and a licence from the Marine Management Organisation (MMO).

As part of the project there has been a wide ranging public consultation, including drop in events in the summer of 2017 seeking feedback from the public.

Subject to securing the necessary permissions and consents, works would likely take place over Spring and Summer 2019.

A cheque was presented to Julie Alford (Group Organiser) together with 20 or so of the Young Carers at the Kings Head Public House in Holt when the Rotary Club provided a Christmas Dinner for these great young people from North Norfolk who fully deserve to be given a treat and a night out.

The Rotary Club of North Norfolk will also be making bucket collections at Morrisons in Cromer and Tescos in Sheringham over the next few weekends - please give generously if you see us there, as we need to raise lots of money for this worthwhile charity.
